hello everyone, annoying spaniard here!!! these last few days i've been stressing over assignments so i didn't have time or will to post one of these, but i'm back and this post is gonna be a bit longer so yay!

if you don't know what i'm doing, i'm just playing pokemon scarlet and violet and commenting on any references to my culture i come across :) here's my previous post btw

let's start with porto marinado's marketplace!! markets are big in spain, they can be found all throughout the country and i feel there's not a single market that served as inspiration for the paldean one, below i'll just add the ones i know the most / the most representative ones: the la cebada and san miguel markets in madrid, the la boquería market in barcelona, and the central market in valència

staying on this topic, i also really like kofu as a gym leader and specifically as a chef! as you could already imagine by looking at paldea, food is incredibly important in spain, it is part of our cultural identity and it plays a huge part in almost every aspect of daily life. there's 283 michelin stars in the country, and spanish chefs have won the title of best chefs in the world on numerous occasions. cooking shows are very popular, and in most of them there's always a section where the chef goes to the market to get fresh produce, just like kofu does! his personality reminds me a lot of famous tv chef karlos arguiñano, while his design is more similar to chef josé andrés, an incredible human being who's done a lot of humanitarian aid around the world and who recently got awarded with a honorific plaque in kyiv by ukrainian president zelensky as well as with the order of honor.

i've already commented on this but i hadn't seen the actual postal office building until now; the colour of mail service here is yellow, just like in the games :)

i found a new restaurant which means new food yay!!!

the first dish is just pintxos, similar to tapas but make them basque, and that area is really big on fish and seafood so it makes sense than their pokemon counterpart also has them!

even if arroz con leche is usually associated with argentina, it actually originated in spain and it is a traditional dessert still handmade in rural areas and widely consumed all over the country

ceviche is peruvian!

the fourth dish is probably a reference to espetos

the fifth is just pasta lol

even though levincia is 100% inspired in valència, both because of its location and its modern / technological look (also its name), the business area looks like it took inspiration on the cuatro torres business area and the AZCA district in madrid, the heart of business stuff in the country.

(btw the four towers in the pic are now five so much closer to their pokémon counterparts)

also as a quick note i find very funny the fact that the largest company in paldea seems to be a construction one, as the 2008 spanish economic crisis started (among other factors) due to the high speculation within that sector lol

i also find iono a hilarious concept for a paldean gym leader cause streamers are actually very popular in spain, i would say most young people (including myself) follow at least one streamer, and just looking at the top streamers list for november 2022, i'm counting 4 spanish streamers in the top 50 of the world. spanish youtubers are pretty high in the hispanic twitch community and for what i've seen on the internet recently younger latines are beginning to associate spain with twitch and streamers which lol. and of course, i cannot talk about spanish streamers without talking about ibai llanos, probably the most influential person to young people right now in the country (and a pretty good influence that is); he has the 4th most-followed twitch channel in the world, he's won the streamer of the year award in 2020 and 2021, held many irl events that have broken twitch view records, and has managed to rival mainstream television. in fact, spanish television seems to hold an absurd grudge against streamers and sees them as direct competitors, it's all very bizarre and makes all of iono's thing even funnier.

also - and i realise this is only a thing that happens in the spanish version of the game but it brought me immense joy and i wanted to share it with you - all of iono's lines and in general all of her gym was full of references to twitter memes and basically internet slang, it was both delightful and painful. here are some of my favorites:

she would say 'hacer la combatición' ('do the fightation') instead of 'combatir' ('fight'), and this is a reference to twitter slang; instead of saying 'morir' ('die') people would just type 'hacer la morición' ('do the diation'). it's just a funny and nonsensical way of saying it, that's it. also i've said this irl so it's one of those expressions capable of jumping outside of the internet into everyday vocabulary

at one point she calls you 'monstro/a' ('monster'), which is an expression the singer and celebrity rosario flores uses during the the voice auditions (she's a coach there) a lot, to the point it became a meme.

this one made me holler because it is one of my favourite expressions and one i use all the time... anyways when you defeat this trainer (i believe he's the first one?) he says 'emosido ganados' ('we have been beaten'). the correct way of writing that phrase is 'hemos sido ganados', and it is a reference to this graffitti which has become a staple in the twitter reaction meme repertoire ('emosido engañado' reads 'we have been fooled', the correct way of writing it is 'hemos sido engañados'). i unfortunately also say this one irl from time to time rip me

Well, the Scarlet Violet dex apparently leaked in its entirety finally, and if it’s to be believed, a considerable amount of my favorite Pokémon got axed, and it includes a bunch of Pokémon I don’t care much for. That’s saddening to see!

BUT HEY! Lots of Hisuian Pokemon will be able to be transferred in, including three of my favorites!!

EDIT: now it seems like every hisuian Pokémon is able to be transferred in!! Yay!!

I hope the DLC they keep discussing can introduce a few more Pokémon I like, though ^^;

okay now that i'm over the shock (mostly), my thoughts on pokemon presents today:

TCG Classic. Daaaang this looks slick I absolutely love the play accessories like the briefcase/playmat, the cool spinning ball bearings contraption, AND especially those stackable damage counters omfgggggggg. But unfortunately Base Set Charizard is here so as if this wasn't expensive enough, that thing's gonna drive it up to be even more unaffordable than it already was to me, blegh (maybe I could at least... 3D print some replicas of the stackable damage counters??? maybe??? idk if my local library has a 3D printer)

Pokémon Concierge. Looks really cute and charming! Zero faith in Netflix though, they're gonna cancel this at the speed of light and then it'll be like 10 years or so before it can resurface somewhere else.

Mobile Stuff. I'm not into Unite or Masters EX at all, though more power to people who do. As for myself, I absolutely love Cafe Remix!! Buuuut the stuff they showed for Cafe in the Presents trailer already went live last night, so not much of an announcement at all lol

Pokémon Sleep (with special guest star Pokémon Go Plus Plus + Plus ++). So, Sleep wasn't cancelled after all. Neat idea but I already give Pokémon Company so much. Too much, really. I don't wanna give 'em my sleep data too. I don't need Professor Neroli to see just how truly fucked up my sleep patterns and schedule are.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet DLC. Yay...? I really love the look of the new Pokémon shown for Part 1. Faith is otherwise not very high at the moment with how there was kind of... no gameplay footage shown of these, when combined with how SV runs (and IMO, looks)

aaand the bonus wow it's no Mystery Dungeon. I'm still sad. I'm still really sad. SwSh's DLC announcement came with a PMD announcement so why not here too? It's been a good chunk of time since RTDX... aaaaah my desire for an all-new PMD is soooo high. Heck, a Gates to Infinity remake would've been so hype as well (I would've even settled for an Explorers remake lmfao, even though that game I feel doesn't need/would benefit less from, a remake)

Daily things ~holiday edition~

✨ dog sat for a quick night for my favorite boy Finn!! So so happy I got to see him!

✨ I ended up getting the new switch OLED and it’s amazinggg!!! The differences are minor but they make the biggest difference!!

✨ haven’t been running in a month now which makes me so so sad and frustrated but I try to go out and walk in the neighborhood to get the light exercise still. I am doing the peloton daily now which is amazingggg!! But missing my runs and the fresh air with working out so so much. Hopefully my back will get figured out soon and can be resolved easily!! 🤞

✨ I am obsessed with platforms shoes now lol!!! I have platform converse, and then I also got my first pair of Nike airforce 1s 😭

And then I just bought myself a pair of Oxford platform Doc Marten’s 😅 This year I spent SO much money…. So I need to go back to saving!! Lots to save for this year! My brother and I are moving early next year (YAY!!!) and that needs lots of saving, I have a Disneyland trip over the summer with a friend, going to NYC next year during the winter, spending money for Taylor swift concert next year, etc! Plus just saving in general! :)

✨ the biggest thing I bought myself for a holiday treat was a quest 2 VR system!!!!! That is getting delivered today!!!!! I am SO freaking excited!!!!! I have really gotten into gaming since being essentially on bed rest and it helps pass the time… but it’s also become a genuine hobby! I am loving Pokémon violet and then I got Pokémon shield and have been playing the two. And then I wanted the virtual reality system bc getting to be fully immersed in the games is amazing and escaping entirely to a new world… I need that right now lol

✨ I’m going to a friends beach house tomorrow for the weekend in celebration of New Years. I’m chugging DayQuil like it’s water (haha jk.. sorta) and hopefully I only feel better as each day comes! 🤞

Have You Seen These New Pokémon? Have you SEEN Them?

New trailer for Scarlet and Violet finally dropped. I was getting so itchy for new information, I was about to try and start making stuff up!

First notable thing about the trailer are the Pokémon stickers on the wall I didn't notice before. Not much to say, just wanted to point them out.

Second is the new Pokémon Center, which is now... a gas station? I mean, that's what first comes to mind when I see it, but it's actually more of a kiosk now than an entire building. I'm willing to bet this is just how they are in The Wilderness, since I'm pretty sure there were traditional Pokémon Center buildings in the previous trailer. This is probably so they don't need to have NPC's in The Out Of Doors perform this function (though they still could if they wanted). It's probably also a PokéMart, PC, and other functions.

There appear to be two academies. Judging from the starting outfit thing, which you belong to probably depends on version. I get the impression only one will exist per game, but not necessarily.

There are also two professors in this game, but it's also one per version! Tron-reject Turo (short for Arturo, probably, but likely Turbo also. This may be more apparent later) in Violet and Unfrozen Cavewoman Professor Sada (seriously, what is she wearing?) in Scarlet. Also of note, the change in character art style indeed goes beyond the player character.

After new footage of the starters (with more info on the website), we're introduced to Nemona. Judging from what she says, you meet her before you pick your first Pokémon. The website describes her as a guide rather than a rival, and I'm getting a "Sempai" vibe here. She probably goes to the same school as you as an upperclassman, which is a fairly literal translation of the word though I think it implies a sort of casual mentorship as well.

I also notice some asymmetry in her design with that single, elbow length glove. I'm betting either it or at least the bracelet part is the new Gimmick Band, like the Z-Ring in Sun & Moon or the Dynamax Band in Sword & Shield. You won't see it on the player character in either trailer, but they've left the Gimmick Bands out before properly introducing them in past generations.

Nemona also introduces us to Pawmi, which is probably the worst Pikachu derivation I've seen. It didn't even read as one until I saw it was an Electric type on the website. I see it now, of course, but this thing doesn't even have a nose! This looks like someone tried to reverse-engineer Pikachu for their own game and avoid copyright infringement as much as possible. I mean, you could say that about all the Pikachu derivations, but... What even is it? A red panda? A chinchilla? A chipmunk? It's almost shapeless.

Also, in-world multiplayer is back, but now it's less of pseudo-MMO free-for-all. You can link up with up to four friends and... go your separate ways? I mean, sure, I guess. I'm not sure if that's meant to be a selling point or just a framing device for the rest of the trailer. Also, it looks like trainer customization is back. Yay! I didn't really doubt it but I thought it seemed possible with the version-exclusive starting outfits.

After a couple more returning Pokémon (Fletchinder and Flaafy), we're introduced to Smoliv. Love the name, hate the design. It's like a knock-off Petilil, but I'll give it a pass for now since it's probably going to have an evolution that looks more interesting. It apparently produces oil that's not fit for human consumption, but I imagine Oliverybig's oil will be a popular cooking ingredient. But it can't just be a black olive, right? It's gotta be, like, a vine with black olives (or even Smolivs *shudder*) growing on it.

Next, we're introduced to Lechonk, who is the only named Pokémon in this trailer because we also get to see the battle interface. The interface isn't much to write home about, though I do notice angles in the corners that kinda makes it look like we're watching through a camera. Will Drone Rotom play a larger roll in this game?

Also, now that I take a closer look, I notice that while Quaxly's HP bar is in the lower left corner, Lechonk's is above its head. That is very much like Legends Arceus, which suggests to me that you can have impromptu horde battles against wandering overworld Pokémon in much the same way. Maybe more of that system is returning than I expected...

Also, Lechonk is the best of these three new Pokémon, visually. Still not great, but I like this little piggy better than Smoliv and Pawmi. Liking the name, too, though I feel it's a bit meme-y. Can't wait to see what porker this thing evolves into.

More returning Pokémon, a couple of which we get to see in the new trading sequence. Kind of a weird flex, but okay. It's notable in that completely done in some separate, glow-space cutscene, instead being shown flying from their trainers' hands in the overworld and passing each other in the skies above. Neat.

A lot more returning Pokémon (including some I think were cut from the other Switch games?) leading to what appears to be an outdoor battle court. My impression is that this is what Gyms look like now, though I could be misinterpreting things. I can't imagine that they're purely for having open-world PVP, though.

Oh, Pikachu's back. Okay.

Then we leave actual game footage as the camera runs through some kind of chasm, across some sea, and up a stone spire, splitting into two frames. And at the precipice(s) stand the Box Legendaries!

On the left, Scarlet's Koraidon, a red, serpentine, feathered lizard with what looks like a wheel in its chest. Clearly based on motorcycles. And on the right, Violet's Miraidon, a blue, robotic serpent with jets for legs! (I was calling them "Road Rage" and "Jet Blue" before I found their names) Personally, I'm liking Koraidon more than Miraidon, but I think I might need more incentive to get Scarlet instead of Violet.

We also get to see the box art, which has a leather-bound look it behind the effects around the legendaries. Now I'm getting even more of a fairy-tale vibe! Although, the Pokémon themselves aren't very story-bookish, are they?

Oh! And the release date! November 18 this year! For now, at least.

Then the trailer ends with a Pokéball flying across a shifting, crystalline background that suggests quantum foam to me. Will the multiverse play as big a roll in this game as it did in Sun & Moon? Does this foreshadow the "Villain" legendary? Or even the Evil Team? Or is it just how they end all their videos from now on? I wonder how long it'll be until we find out.

Incidentally, I was thinking about the Legendaries' designs and how they've been introduced, and I came...

...To a startling conclusion!

Seriously, though. There's a old episode of the anime that featured "Extreme Pokémon Training," which was essentially chariot races but with Pokémon. I can easily imagine Jet Blue and Road Rage Miraidon and Koraidon in some kind of racing battle. It's probably unlikely and I'm not sure how it'd work, but it's exciting to think about!

hey, sorry for not posting about scarlet and violet in a while but i stopped playing during the holidays season due to all the events™️ and uni assignments occupying my time, and after i just couldn't bring myself to post here :/

there's not much else to say tho, i just finished up the team star and titan storylines and got my ass handled by clavell (once) and arven (TWICE) so i mostly trained to get to a decent level. that made me a bit overleveled for the league but not too much, hassel and especially larry were tough and each killed three of my pokemon (i'm so glad i wasn't doing a nuzlocke <3). i had heard that geeta was not a very hard champion and yeah. it was a bit underwhelming, i one-shotted almost all her pokémon. but anyways, yay i am a champion now!!!! i just wanted to show y'all my final team, i love it very much :)

i'm almost done now, i just have to battle nemona and go to the are zero which i imagine is the end game area

I'm really sorry about the wait. I didn't intend for it to be this long. I did have a suspicion I might need more time, especially since the day I was originally supposed to post this was the first day of school and just before that I had just pounded out a pretty major piece of writing in two days, so I was a bit burned out. But I've had low motivation because of school, and I've also been working on a pretty big project - I'm writing the script for a fangan comic on instagram (cerealronpa)! (it was pretty fun working on this story and that at the same time because they have COMPLETELY different moods haha.) It won't be out for a while yet and the premise is pretty different from my usual stuff, but I highly encourage you to check it out when it comes out.

anyway between Cerealronpa and school I definitely have less time and motivation than before, so I might push this back to updating every two weeks instead of weekly, sorry about that. I'm not entirely sure if I'll be able to even stick to that, given how long it took me to get this one out, but I'll do my best! it's a little better now that I've settled into a routine anyway.

Pokémon SoulSilver Randomized Nuzlocke [Part 1]

Since I haven’t fully learned from my mistakes, hey! It’s time for another Nuzlocke. With extra Randomizer action for reasons that are going to be very apparent as I go through this set’s rules.

I’m going to try what this person on the internet calls a Chainlocke, though with slight alterations for the sake of sanity; basic idea is that my catch Types have to be linked. If I catch a Grass/Poison pokemon, my next option has to have one of those in common.

That gets thorny really fast, which I guess is the point, but I’m more about wacky fun than serious challenges. So to make things more entertaining, I will be randomizing every pokemon in the wild, as well as NPC gifts and trades. All the other Trainers keep their original stuff. I get to be special.

So. Rules:

Only the first viable pokemon of each route may be caught.

Gift pokemon are cool to use.

In-game trades are also cool.

‘Viable’ in this case means that they must have a Type in common with the most recent caught pokemon.

The starter will be starting that chain despite not technically being caught by me. Because I feel like it.

Each pokemon must receive a nickname.

If a pokemon faints, it is considered dead. It will go in an appropriately named box in the PC.

In the event of a team wipe, the run will continue with whatever’s left (alive) in the PC.

And that’s about it. Let’s kick it.

My next pokemon will have to be Water or Ice. It will probably be Water, thanks to Water being absurdly common. That’s cool. I like Water pokemon.

And so, without yet being able to catch anything, I head out into the world. Running my obligatory fetch quest for Professor Elm.

I love how Silver’s most defining feature is his red hair.

After a short visit home to tell our mom we are far too irresponsible to be trusted with all of the money we’re going to earn from mugging other children, plus a short tutorial on catching things, we can finally get started!

Smoochum is the only thing available in the routes we’ve visited so far, but I haven’t checked out the northern one right outside the starting town yet.

But the walking takes the decision out of my hands! We encounter a level 4 Smoochum, and as per the rules, that is what I have to go for. Lest I kill the route.

One of those problems I can fix. As for the other, inb4 the Mystery Egg and whatever I get from Bill are the only other teammates Chance ever has.

We march through the trainers between us and the next town. Certain of nothing but Chance’s ability to murder them all.

Route 31 has an Elekid as the first thing I see and the rules say I can’t catch it. What horrible person came up with this. Seviper and Lopunny are also here. Those I care less about.

Before we think too hard on that, I’ve gotta say that I do love how gen 4 does the caves. They are very gorgeously cavernous, and the few times I bother to think about the background art, I enjoy walking through them.

These are things that do not help me.

The person who usually gives you an Onix for a Bellsprout in whatever this city is (Violet) offers a Corphish for a Kecleon. Things to keep in mind if I ever find a Kecleon. That I can catch.

In no version of this game have I ever done this egg thing. I was unaware there even was an egg thing, since anything that requires me to pick the right word out of the hat of words bores me to tears. Then I started watching too many people play Pokemon games on the internet.

So normally, you can get a Mareep, Wooper, or Slugma. In the spirit of the Chainlocke, even though I said gifts were cool, we’ll take the Wooper egg. Vote now on whether or not it’ll actually be a Wooper. I don’t know how to use the Randomizer.

Oh, and it looks like there’s also Roselia in this tower.

I can’t do anything about it, but that’s nice.

I love how each generation of pokemon decides the Gyms need to be more extra.

Time to spend an hour doing nothing but walking. I normally wouldn’t be so interested in hatching the eggs, but. I would kind of like to have a promise of Chance not being completely alone this entire game.

One down! His name is Cloud! He is... also Sassy (Chance, is this why you let him stay), level 1, and alert to sounds!

I remain unsure if I’m going to actually use either of these new friends. The spirit of what I’m going for with this doesn’t really work with me just being handed two random Official Teammates. I might change my mind after a few more routes of things not going well for me, but for now, I think I’ll mostly stick to me and Chance.

They’re both level 1. I can be nice and not set them up for death. They can make it to level 5 before we say a cordial farewell. I can grind in this game. I can be nice.
