The 'no air-conditioning' green juice
Tumblr media
A lot has been written on the virtues of a cold press vegetable juice, but did you know that it can also be a very good temperature regulator? Blanka, who has to spend some time in Summer working from her boss’s home office space ‘under a hot tin roof’, shares with us her strategies for cooling it down when you have no access to air conditioning.
I know - this is a lengthy article - if you are in a hurry and just need to make that juice, scroll to the bottom to find my favourite recipe.
I have been juicing for a very, very long time. When I first started I had a small centrifugal juicer, and I mostly juiced apples and carrots in it, with the occasional addition of ginger. This was after all the early nineties and nobody was yet talking about the power of greens. Then I slowly started adding a celery stick here, and a piece of cucumber there, basing my juicing experiments on know-how learned in a juicing book by Dr Norman Walker, a natural hygienist living at the turn of previous century. However, my £25 juicer was not up to juicing anything as exotic as green leaves or a strawberry and so my choices were a little limited.
Eventually, with the rise of the raw food revolution, about 15 years or so ago, I discovered the power of a green juice based mostly on veggies with just a small addition of fruit for palatability. I have decided it was time to upgrade my juicer to one that will juice all these wonderful things like lettuce leaves and wheatgrass and herbs and I have not looked back ever since.
Some people will argue that to make a juice is time consuming and expensive, with all the waste that you get to throw into compost. There are some experts who are anti juice arguing that as all the fibre is removed the juice gets absorbed rather quickly in our stomachs, which can raise our blood sugar level and cause problems for some people. They may promote green smoothies instead, as everything is still in the drink, including the aforementioned fibre. While this argument make sense to me, and I enjoy green smoothies too, there is something about green juice for me that I cannot quite access with a smoothie. For me, green smoothies are more for winter time, especially when made with heavy nut milks as a base, as they are more filling and not as cooling as juices.
This cooling effect makes a zingy green juice my top choice for Summer, especially on a hot day. When you make a green juice with a very small amount of sweet fruit, it is full of nutrients and yet light and super refreshing. There are some vegetables that have cooling properties, and if you make these the base of your juice, you may find that you are coping much better with the heat of Summer. Thanks to the high water content and nutrient density, green juices will also nourish your skin within, making it glow and even supporting a healthy tan by providing the nutrients our skin needs such as beta-carotene.
Some of the best veggies to use for your summery, thirst quenching juice are celery and cucumber, both of which are sadly sprayed in conventional farming so buy organic if you can. They both have cooling properties and both yield a lot of juice, so they make the perfect base. To this you can add some pineapple, peaches, nectarines or a chunk of ripe sweet watermelon, lemon or lime for zing (you can juice them with their skins, too, as long as they are organic and unwaxed), and perhaps a small piece of fresh turmeric or ginger for even more zing and even more healing nutritious plant power.
If you have access to fresh green coconuts, then you are very lucky indeed. Their water is full of electrolytes, and so they are the best (and fastest) way to rehydrate our body. Simply find your way into one (easier said then done but YouTube will be your friend here), and drink up. You will feel instantly invigorated. You may (not) know that in the 1st World War coconut water was used for transfusions, as it is sterile while inside the coconut, and its biochemical make-up is very similar to our blood plasma. When you consider that the chemical profile of Chlorophyll is very similar to Haemoglobin (the difference being the central molecule in Chlorophyll is Magnesium rather than Iron in our blood pigment), you can imagine what a boost topping your rich green juice with fresh coconut water will be.
Juicing is perhaps not for everyone, but I do encourage you to give it a try. You never know; it may just be the upgrade to your well-being that you have been waiting for!
Whether you are a juice convert or not, I hope that you have a glorious summer full of days in the sun, wiggling your toes in the grass or in the sand on a beach somewhere, recharging your batteries and storing some of this vibrant Summer energy deep in your cells for later.
No Air Conditioning Green Juice
1 cucumber (organic, if non organic then peel the skin off)
½ head of celery (organic)
1 broccoli stalk
½ small fennel
1 inch slice of ripe pineapple (or to taste)
Handful of fresh coriander
Handful of fresh mint
Small piece of fresh turmeric or ginger
½ to 1 whole lemon – organic unwaxed
Run everything through a juicer, alternating softer things like cucumber and pineapple with harder things like celery to keep the juicer going without getting clogged if your juicer struggles with softer produce.
I will generally keep of cuts of produce after cooking and add anything to my juices, within reason: green leaves from cauliflower, basil stalks left over from making pesto, chicory stalks, parsley stalks (powerful stuff!), greens from radishes, outer (more bitter) lettuce leaves etc.
I will be sharing more ideas for healthy eating and snacking, especially morning time, as well as running live morning yoga classes in the Morning Yoga Collective or sign up for updates here so you never miss a post.

Stress Management Techniques for a Busy Lifestyle
Tumblr media
In the fast-paced whirlwind of modern life, stress seems to be an ever-present companion. Whether it's the relentless demands of work, family responsibilities, or the constant barrage of notifications from our digital devices, the pressures of everyday living can take a toll on our mental and physical well-being. But fear not, dear reader, for amidst the chaos, there are oasis of calm and techniques to help you navigate the stormy seas of stress.
Mindfulness Meditation:
In the midst of a hectic day, taking just a few minutes to sit quietly and focus on your breath can work wonders. Mindfulness meditation has been shown to reduce stress levels, increase self-awareness, and promote a sense of inner peace. Find a quiet space, close your eyes, and let the worries of the day melt away as you connect with the present moment.
The Power of Nature:
When the pressures of city life become overwhelming, escaping to the great outdoors can provide a much-needed respite. Whether it's a stroll through a local park, a hike in the mountains, or simply sitting beneath a tree and listening to the birdsong, immersing yourself in nature can soothe the soul and restore your sense of balance.
Physical Activity:
Exercise is not only essential for maintaining physical health but also plays a crucial role in managing stress. Whether it's going for a run, practicing yoga, or hitting the gym, physical activity releases endorphins, the body's natural stress relievers, and helps to clear the mind of worries and tension.
The Art of Saying No:
In our eagerness to please others and meet the demands of our busy schedules, we often find ourselves overcommitted and stretched thin. Learning to set boundaries and say no to activities and obligations that don't align with our priorities is essential for preserving our sanity and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Unplug and Recharge:
In today's hyper-connected world, it's all too easy to become overwhelmed by the constant stream of information and stimuli from our digital devices. Taking regular breaks from screens and carving out time for activities that nourish our souls, whether it's reading a book, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing a hobby, is essential for recharging our batteries and reducing stress.
Seek Support:
Don't be afraid to reach out for support when the weight of the world feels too heavy to bear alone. Whether it's talking to a trusted friend or family member, seeking guidance from a therapist or counselor, or joining a support group, sharing your burdens with others can provide valuable perspective, validation, and emotional relief.
In conclusion, while the demands of a busy lifestyle may sometimes feel overwhelming, there are countless techniques and strategies at our disposal for managing stress and finding moments of peace and tranquility amidst the chaos. By incorporating mindfulness meditation, connecting with nature, prioritizing physical activity, setting boundaries, unplugging from screens, and seeking support when needed, we can cultivate resilience, restore balance, and navigate the challenges of modern life with grace and equanimity. Remember, dear reader, that amidst the storm clouds, there is always a silver lining waiting to be discovered. If you are interested in reading these type of articles so visit here Refersms

Poem of the week: Gerard Manley Hopkins is trying to write "The Sea And The Skylark"
As I set out to write “The Sea And The Skylark,” I am filled with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. I find solace in the beauty of nature and long to encapsulate its essence within my words. The sea, with its constant ebb and flow, and the skylark, with its melodious song, serve as the perfect muses for this task. I close my eyes and imagine the crashing waves, their relentless force as…

Revealing Five Unexpected Advantages of Caring for Trees and Plants on Mental Well-being
Tumblr media
The Influence of Tree and Plant Maintenance on Mental Health: Amidst the hustle and bustle of contemporary urban environments, where concrete landscapes prevail, many seek solace in the serenity of nature. It’s widely acknowledged that spending time outdoors, surrounded by lush greenery, has a calming effect on our mental state. Yet, did you realize that tending to trees and plants not only benefits the environment but also significantly enhances our mental well-being? In this article, we explore the symbiotic relationship between caring for trees and plants and mental health, revealing five unexpected advantages that may encourage you to nurture your green companions with greater attention.
1. Stress Alleviation: Nature’s Remedy for Modern-day Pressures
In today’s fast-paced society, stress has become a common companion for many individuals. However, research suggests that engaging in activities related to tree and plant care, such as gardening or simply spending time in green spaces, can notably reduce stress levels. Tending to plants promotes mindfulness and cultivates a sense of tranquility, offering an escape from the chaos of daily life and providing solace among the foliage.
2. Mood Elevation: Cultivating Happiness through Gardening
There’s something inherently therapeutic about immersing oneself in gardening tasks. Whether you’re sowing seeds, trimming branches, or merely appreciating the beauty of blossoming flowers, gardening has been shown to elevate mood and enhance overall well-being. The physical activity involved in tree and plant care releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood enhancers, while the visual and olfactory stimuli of plants evoke feelings of joy and contentment, making gardening a potent remedy for melancholy.
3. Cognitive Revitalization: Renewing the Mind in Nature’s Embrace
In an era dominated by screens and constant stimuli, our cognitive faculties often bear the burden of information overload. Nonetheless, spending time in nature has been proven to rejuvenate cognitive function and enhance concentration levels. By caring for trees and plants, individuals partake in a form of cognitive rejuvenation, enabling the mind to reset and recharge amidst the tranquility of natural settings, resulting in improved focus and mental clarity.
4. Social Engagement: Nurturing Community Through Green Spaces
Tree and plant care not only benefit individual mental health but also facilitate social interaction and community involvement. Community gardens and urban green spaces provide a platform for individuals to come together, exchange knowledge, and form meaningful connections with like-minded individuals. The act of tending to trees and plants fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie, strengthening social bonds and promoting collective well-being.
5. Sense of Purpose: Cultivating Growth, Internally and Externally
One of the most profound benefits of caring for trees and plants is the sense of purpose it instills in individuals. Whether tending to a small indoor garden or participating in large-scale reforestation endeavors, nurturing plant life imbues our lives with meaning and significance. Tree and plant care remind us of our interconnectedness with the natural world and our responsibility to preserve its beauty for future generations, offering a sense of purpose that transcends the confines of our own existence.
In conclusion, the advantages of tree and plant care on mental health are diverse and extensive. From stress reduction and mood enhancement to cognitive revitalization and social engagement, nurturing greenery enriches our lives in ways previously unimagined. As we navigate the complexities of modern life, let us not overlook the therapeutic power of nature and its profound impact on our mental well-being. Therefore, the next time you feel overwhelmed or disconnected, take a moment to immerse yourself in the splendor of the natural world and nurture the green companions that offer us so much joy and comfort.
