switchbru dns baybeeee I just set my primary dns in settings to 45.55. 142.122 and boom, little browser! its not the best since the built in browser is built for like the bare minimum that regular users would need, but it actually works really well for ao3.

So I've been reading up on the Dimensional Nexus Encyclopedia, and found some wild stuff in there I gotta infodump about.
First of all, did you know the name is wrong? It's not interdimensional at all! We're moving in space, not through different dimensions.
It turns out we're in one of those looping cosmologies where the whole universe just repeats if you go far enough. It's safely outside our normal light cone, so you'd never be able to tell normally, but that's what the Dimensional Nexus is for.
So the universe is the Prime Earth , and then if you go a couple hundred billion light years in any cardinal* direction, you'll find another Earth. But because of quantum effects, there's slight differences, and the farther from Prime Earth you get, the more slight differences compound on each other, and you end up with worlds that seem stranger and stranger.
And the "local group" is just the 258 Earth's closest to Prime (well, 257 + valentine) , as they're close enough to have humans on them. Past that, you get to dead worlds: there's an earth, it might have life on it, but there's no humans.
Most of these that have been surveyed have zero evidence of there ever having been humans on them, but there's a few that have human artifacts but no living humans. None of these seem to have died in recent memory, ie there's no nuclear winter planets, and the most recent one we see has humanity mostly dying out in the 3rd century PCE, and struggling along until the 11th century PCE when they finally go extinct. It's supposed (but unproven) that many of the artifactless dead worlds are just worlds where humanity (or the entire biosphere) died out so long ago that we can't find any surviving evidence of humanity, but they still did exist in some way.
Past them you get to Missing Worlds : there's no Earth there. You show up in the right position and there's just empty space. A few probes have been dropped in those worlds, and they have completely different solar systems (although one of them (loneluna) seems to have the same solar system, down to the moon still being in roughly the same orbit around the sun... But no Earth. That one is described by 9 out of 10 scientists as "creepy")
Anyway... So the Dimensional Nexus is run by the Prime universe but did you know they didn't discover the tech? It was actually the Bet world that first deployed multiversal travel tech. The Prime verse spotted it immediately and they ended up working together, because at the time Prime was researching the same stuff, they were just slightly behind. I've written about that contact before, in a world of friends.
Prime just ended up being the universe that set of the Dimensional Nexus. As we're always having to tell people, we're not the "space police", we're researchers. The primary goal of the Dimensional Nexus is to learn more about what universes exist and how things are going on them, because of the extreme risk of a war using this technology.
A properly equipped army could transport itself into your city. Sure you can use the DN tech to detect that invasion, but at that point it's already over, you've lost. They have commandos in the presidential mansion and soldiers occupying every street corner. Any attempted resistance would be bloody and short-lived.
So yeah, Prime was like "we gotta make sure there's not a Nazi Earth out there invading the multiverse". They teamed up with Bet and started the Dimensional Nexus to find out if they need to protect themselves and, if they do, how the fuck they do that.
The latter hasn't been promising. If we're not willing to take extreme measures like hiding off-earth and reshaping the planet to be a trap to travelers, about the only action you can take is "preemptive attack". You kill them before they have a chance to attack you. Like that old metaphor for interstellar war, it's hide and seek with missile launchers. As soon as you spot another 'verse with DN tech, you kill them before they kill you. Nasty warfare.
But the former has been promising. We've got no nazis worlds. The world's are all different in small to big ways, but none of them seem to be either:
1. Run by expansive fascist empires, or
2. on the verge of discovering DN tech
So the Dimensional Nexus is mainly watching and waiting and studying. We're trying to better understand how and why the different Earths are different, and we're keeping an eye on any scientists experimenting with doing a neutrino slingshot through neutron stars.
We also do a lot of death earth exploration these days. Up until '74 when valentine was discovered, we we're pretty sure there were only 257 worlds. valentine is in some kind of island of stability out in the dead worlds, and we don't know if that's because of the unique time shot going on, or if that's coincidental.
There is a bit of tendency for the current year on an Earth to be farther back from the Prime present, the further they are from Prime, but it's usually only a few decades at most, and even that wouldn't correctly describe valentine. They're in the 20s (ish: their timeline went chaotic so time tends to move sideways, not forward) but with how far out they are they should only be in like the 1980s.
Anyway the discovery of valentine changed things: we though there were no living worlds in the dead zone, turns out there's at least one, so now we gotta make sure there's not two. Thus all the exploring. We don't want to find out there's at least two worlds in the dead zone, valentine and jetpackhitler.
So yeah! Over the last 30 years since the Gravekeeper Mission started, we've cataloged about 78% of the dead worlds. We'll be done in another 10 years, and then the only worry is from something in the Missing Zone.
Oh for the record, your world (the reader) is 91verse. That's one of the middle earths (NO LOTR JOKES) where you're weird but not too weird. Like, you've still got dogs and English and capitalism, while the edgeworlds might not. (that time/distance thing is why it's still 2024 PCE for y'all, instead of 2118 PCE)
Also someone had asked about a previous post I made (indirectly. No computers in the Nexus, thanks to the temporal flux) how I knew some information: did I really go to Belgium and ask around until I found Ariana Grande on a farm with her husband?
No, of course not. I used our surveillance tech. One of the main things that's been done to watch for potential rivals in the DN tech arms race is build a lot of ways to spy on people in other universes. And specifically one major area of effort is doing cross-universe matching: you pick someone in one universe and find that identical person in other universes.
That way if there's some genius scientist in one world who has some neutrino-slingshot theories, we can quickly look them up in other universes to make sure they're not doing the same there. And it's very commonly misused by fools like me to see what a celebrity from this world is doing in others. It's always funny to look up the president or the best paid actor and find there's a universe where they instead are a kindergarten teacher.
It's a bit of a privacy invasion but the Dimensional Nexus is already the biggest privacy invasion in the multiverse (a term we still use despite it being wrong: there's only one universe!), and it's justified by those in charge that it's the only way to prevent an unwinnable DN war. We either invade everybody or we spy on everybody to make sure they don't invade everybody. Yeah. I'm just here for fieldwork, if you have a problem with it talk to the politicians who set up this thing.
Final fun fact: when the Dimension Nexus was set up, it was representatives of 5 earths: Prime, Bet, john1135, carshop, and blacksky. Because those are some of the first universes found, they're very similar... Right down to their leaders.
So there's 5 signatures on the declaration and THREE OF THEM are PM Thiers!
You should see the photo. It looks like a set of triplets setting up the worst boy band imaginable. (I can't sent the image with this post because of the no-computers thing)
* I do not have nearly enough time to explain what "cardinal" means in terms of multiversal geometry.

For the 'send me a character' ask game:
Is asking about Mikami too obvious? Haha
Tumblr media
@catboymettaton asked the same thing,,, you guys know me so well. glad to know that mikami is the first character that pops into the minds of you all when i am concerned
favorite thing about them
God. can i say everything. love love love everything about him: his genuine obsession with justice, something that he has that light doesn't !!!; how from a very young age, he has had this frigid mindset of good and evil like imagine being eight years old and thinking that; the fact that he's just a very huge fan of winston churchill. i love how pedantic and routinely he is, that is one of the main reasons why light failed in the end. he is so predictable that it's a fault, that he clings to his routine so much. he is NOT neurotypical, i love him so much. also love how his priority is his own ideals which he is sooooo fixed on, i'll talk about it a little later in the post.
ALSO i remembered this as i was writing this post but i really like the fact that he kind of absentmindedly thinks that he's the reason for all of this. very very very unexplored aspect of his character.
least favorite thing about them
the fact that he's a very huge fan of winston churchill :((( i am bengali and he is literally the reason why the bengal famine got so bad. shit person in general, hate that guy so much. the whole "kill all lazy people" isn't a good look for mikami either.
favorite line
the obligatory "YOU"RE NOT GOD, YOU'RE TRASH" but in like the opposite note, i really like the line "there is no reason for me to question. God is absolute. my job is to do as God wishes". one thing i find so unfortunate about death note is that none of the lines in animanga aren't very cool. like it's not deep and poetic :( closest thing to a deep line is probably just the "i wish we could have met some other way // this is the only way we could have met" exchange in jdrama.
brOTP
takada and mikami,,, my most beloved. they can conquer the world, i know this. they are best friends to me. mikami seriously respects her a lot and praises her. i just like to imagine them chatting together before they started working with light. just sitting together, talking over politics, current events, kira, their opinions. they both really really need it. on the other hand, put mikami and misa is a room together PLEASE. can't believe they have never had a canon interaction, this NEEDS to happen. one of these days,,, i will write a misa&mikami fic,,, it would be my best project yet i think considering they are the two dn characters i think i understand the most.
OTP
MIKALAWLIGHT 🗣🗣🗣 OTP OF ALL TIME 🗣🗣🗣think about those three every single day,,, my favorite death note ship,,, well technically it's an OT3 i believe but still. i have two modes of mikalawlight i constantly think about, one is in my special little 1stkira!mikami au where L's primary theory is that light is kira and mikami is his accomplice when it's actually the other way around, misa is still the 2nd kira and it's mikamisa in the same way death note is yagamane except mikami doesn't try to manipulate misa like light does. my second mode of mikalawlight is jdrama mikalawlight because it's the only version of death note where mikami actually co-exists with L (i think it's the only version ? don't know about live action movie or german audio drama). there's of course, alternate no death note universe mikalawlight that i think about. ALSO. everyone go read this fic, most perfect mikalawlight ever even though it's tragically unfinished.
nOTP
actually,,, don't think i have a notp for mikami,,, i just really like it when he is there. mikalawlight, mikalight, lawmika, mikamisa, kiyokami, mikavanni, mikamatsu, mikanear, all very very good to me. just have him there and i am the happiest man alive.
random headcanon
while i really don't like christian mikami and how prevalent it is all the time in dn fandom, i do think he believes in something divine, a kind of higher power. it's not a christian god, it's something very specific to him. micah has a fic where they talk a little about him believing in a higher power like that and. nailed it, it's absolutely my thoughts on mikami. a vaguely muslim mikami is something i find really really really funny and something i think about all the time, because his take on the whole killing people thing really reminds me of the islamic concept of jihad. but i don't take that seriously because i am worried that it would be blasphemous. siller mikami headcanons, he can play the piano and violin. he is bisexual with a lean towards men and it's just something he's fine with it, doesn't think much of it. he cuts his own hair.
unpopular opinion
i will be super honest with you,,, back in like 2009-2016ish time frame, i sincerely believe that teru mikami was one of the, if not most, mischaracterized character in death note. it's fine now, there isn't anything outrageous about mikami that's going around now, but have you seen lawlight fics from that specific time. shudders. so unpopular opinion, i have got a lot of. hmph, but i think one of my favorite opinions that i have is that mikami is definitely not the picture of "blind devotion" like he is often made out to be. mikami is actually very independent and correct me if i am wrong, one of the first actions that he does as x-kira is literally oppose light, when he kills demegawa even though light didn't tell him to. i think HE thinks that he is really good at following orders and will do everything that kami tells him to and i also think that light thinks in the same way, that mikami is #1 perfect servant, but mikami's priority first and foremost is his own ideals, as i alluded to before. it's a part of his facade i think, all of his life
that's why he denounced light so easily in the warehouse scene.
so what this all boils down to is that mikami is NOT obsequious and a sycophant. if i did assign the concept of "blind devotion" to a character, it would probably be misa.
song i associate with them
i need to make a playlist about him, i swear to God. funnily enough, i'll put where is the justice from the death note musical in there because that's more of a mikami song than a light song. but aside from that, exit music (for a film) and not really a song, but fitter happier, which are both by radiohead. one of these days, i need to make a post connecting every lyric of exit music to mikami, it's such a him song.
favorite picture of them
can't pick one favorite tragically,,, there is a LOT. here's a mini collection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ gymbro mikami will forever be famous to me

^ one of the photos of him that i carry around in my phone case (if anyone wants to see the rest, let me knowww)

Would They Date An Overweight Woman
Trigger Warnings
Fatphobia
Talks of Weight
NOTE: These are simply headcanons of if I believe the DN characters would date an overweight woman. These do not reflect my own attitudes or beliefs towards overweight people.
L Lawliet
L's primary focus is on intellect and understanding, not appearances.
He tends to be indifferent to societal norms or expectations and values people for their minds and their character.
If L were to date an overweight woman, he would likely admire her intelligence and personality above all else.
He might even feel an emotional connection more deeply because he could see beyond her appearance, focusing on her inner qualities and what makes her unique
His awkwardness in relationships, however, might lead to moments of discomfort, but he’d show a quiet form of affection, like bringing her sweets as a small gesture of care.
Light Yagami
Light, being someone obsessed with outward appearance and social image, would initially have a more complex reaction.
He might feel conflicted about dating an overweight woman, as he places a high value on physical attractiveness, especially in terms of societal ideals.
However, if this woman had qualities that he found beneficial to his goals (like intelligence or power), he could potentially become more interested in her.
If he did fall for her, he would never fully admit it, as it would conflict with his carefully curated image of perfection.
He might try to push her to change her physical appearance to match his own preferences over time.
Mihael Keehl
Mello would not care about appearances as much as Light does, but he does have a complex about being looked down on.
If the overweight woman was confident and unapologetic about herself, he would respect her for that.
Mello tends to value strength, so if she had a strong personality and didn't shy away from being herself, he would find her attractive.
Mello would appreciate her authenticity and would never try to change her.
His feelings of attraction would be based more on the person's strength and resilience, and less on conventional beauty standards.
Mail Jeevas
Matt is another character who cares more about the mental connection than the physical one.
He is more invested in the intellectual aspects of a relationship, so if the woman’s personality, intellect, and values aligned with his, he would likely pursue a relationship with her without hesitation.
He would appreciate her individuality, seeing her appearance as irrelevant.
His approach might be more straightforward and honest, focusing on the connection rather than the surface.
Nate River
Near is calm, calculating, and somewhat emotionally detached.
He wouldn’t be concerned with how someone looks but instead with how they think and communicate.
If an overweight woman was intellectually stimulating or able to contribute meaningfully to his life, he would certainly date her.
He wouldn't judge her based on appearance but might be surprised at how difficult it can be for others to look past physical appearances.
Misa Amane
Misa is highly focused on appearance and beauty, especially because of her career as an idol. However, she also has a soft spot for people who are kind and loving.
If an overweight woman showed confidence and kindness, Misa might initially feel insecure or awkward, but over time, Misa could grow to appreciate her for who she is.
She’d likely be supportive and loving in the relationship, but might have moments of insecurity, especially if others made judgments about the woman’s appearance.
Still, her adoration for the person would outweigh any concerns about physical beauty, especially if the woman treated her with kindness and supported her.
Sayu Yagami
Sayu, being a more relatable and down-to-earth character, would likely be one of the most accepting and supportive partners.
She is not as focused on physical beauty as she is on personal connection. If she liked someone, she would embrace them as they are, regardless of their size.
Sayu would be kind and nurturing, offering emotional support and genuine affection.
She would see the person as a whole and wouldn’t care about appearance.
Her affectionate nature would make her an ideal partner for someone who might feel insecure about their body.

quick post on NPD (narcissistic personality disorder) :
Tumblr media
"Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a complex personality disorder often detected with other affective and personality disorders. [...] NPD is under the umbrella of Cluster B personality disorders, which include antisocial personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, and borderline personality disorder."
- National library of medicine (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK556001/]
♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔
"Genetic and non-genetic influences on the hierarchy of traits that delineate personality disorder as measured by the Dimensional Assessment of Personality Problems (DAPP-DQ) scale were examined using data from a sample of 483 volunteer twin pairs (236 monozygotic pairs and 247 dizygotic pairs). [...] Additive genetic effects and unique environmental effects emerged as the primary influences on these scales, with unique environmental influences accounting for the largest proportion of the variance for most traits at all levels of the hierarchy."
- Jang KL, Livesley WJ, Vernon PA, Jackson DN. Heritability of personality disorder traits: a twin study. Acta Psychiatr Scand. 1996 Dec;94(6):438-44. doi: 10.1111/j.1600-0447.1996.tb09887.x. PMID: 9020996. [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9020996/]

i hate how people online tend to water down the initial definitions and jump into conclusions. no one said "it's caused by childhood trauma." stop putting things into a box when they're way more complex and diverse and nuanced.
npd is primarily caused by trauma but very often individuals have a genetic predisposition to npd.

flags
since there are two flags for npd that ive seen floating around, and since I've had people asking me why i chose the first one for this npd blog over the other, and some have never seen the first one before, im gonna give a quick explanation for both :
Tumblr media
the first flag is the npd flag. it represents the disorder itself.
created by @/beyond-mogai-pride-flags on august 1, 2017 : https://www.tumblr.com/beyond-mogai-pride-flags/163661799375/narcissistic-personality-disorder-flag
"Design choice: the artist chose pastel pinks and yellows as they are very eye-catching colors that feel like very "outgoing" colors. In line with the outgoing and self assured face that people with NPD project, the pink is associated with confidence and the yellow with insecurity and anxiety. The purple is for royal purple, in the center, to represent the focus on self."
♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the second flag is the npd awareness flag. it's a flag representing everyone fighting for npd awareness, that including non-npd allies.
created by @/npdsafe then rebloged with the stripe meanings by @/liom-archive : https://www.tumblr.com/liom-archive/725390566188285952/npdsafe-npd-awareness-flag-i-wanted-to-make-a
concerning the second flag, there is also an alternate npd awareness flag :
Tumblr media
created by @/npd flag : https://www.tumblr.com/npdflag/694773969935630336/an-alternate-version-of-the-npd-awareness-flag-by
♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔-♚-♔
the reason i chose the first flag is, well, mostly because it's the first that appeared in the research bar lol, but also because i wanted to highlight and focus on the disorder itself instead of using the more generalised flag. to me it felt a bit like using the LGBTQ ally flag instead of the flag of a specific sexuality. on top of that, the majority if not all npd related accounts are using the second flag, so i wanted to make something a bit more unique with my blog presentation. and finally, i just like aesthetically the first one more hehe.
both flags are awesome and you are free to prefer one over the other, aesthetically or for any other reason. i simply chose to use one over the other for simplicity.

Personally, I think L would have solved this by simply not going to trial. Light has an unfortunate accident and is taken care of: why he didn't do this in canon then? How could L have won according to him, according to you? As DN is a world where SPN is real how could have L proved Light's guilt? L already knew Kira was Light and also showed he didn't care about following the law (heh) then why do you think he didn't kill Light? Was it an ego thing? Was proving to the others he was in the right and they believing him that much important to him? Near won because Light admitted he was Kira and the task force witnessed it, so was this what L would consider winning?
Anon's referring to this post.
Why Didn't L Do This?
He didn't get that far.
L had never satisfactorily proven to himself or the task force that Light Yagami was Kira. Even Misa was a bit up in the air as while they had evidence tying her to a second Kira, L never really got to satisfactorily prove that there in fact were ever two Kiras for all he theorized it, Misa never confessed even under over a month of torture followed by several months of incarceration, and until he had the notebook L had no theories for how Misa actually did it.
In L's eyes and everyone else's, he hasn't solved the case. He has a lot of hot takes, some hotter than others, but he hasn't solved it. And for L, from what we see of him and how he speaks about himself, it's all about solving the case in a way he'd found satisfactory.
What he had by the end of the Yotsuba Arc was a few key things. He has the murder weapon, which he did not have previously, as well as the existence of Shinigami which briefly terrifies him but then he gets over remarkably well. He also has this pesky and very tempting 13 day rule. If that rule is true, more so than any of these other 'rules' in the notebook, neither Light Yagami nor Misa Amane can possibly be Kira as they would have died in prison.
However, if L proves that rule is false, both Misa Amane and Light Yagami are back on the table as Kira. L can, in fact, start theorizing exactly how Misa and Light would have made their various kills, that Misa Amane had made the eye deal, so on and so forth.
However, the bait of the 13 day rule is that if false it still doesn't prove Light is Kira. It makes him possible to be Kira, but to an outside party, still no more likely than he was before all of this (which was not very likely at all). What it does is make Misa look much more suspect with the DNA evidence she'd already been arrested on.
Which was why Rem was forced into immediate action to murder L and all his people before the rule could be discovered as a fake.
In other words, L had a long fucking way to go regarding Light as the original 'Kira' and he knew it. This was just the first step in keeping Light as a primary suspect (and then uh getting killed by Rem because he put Misa in the hot seat).
The task force was willing to believe Misa was Kira, they were not at all seeing that Light Yagami was Kira or ever had been.
How Can L Prove Light's Guilt if the Supernatural Exists?
I assume the argument being that you can't prove that Kira isn't a cluster of supernatural hamsters.
I mean, this is just how the law works though, depends on the law system obviously but generally what you have to prove is that someone "beyond a reasonable doubt" committed the crime. Note the wording, beyond a reasonable doubt, for all that the existence of Shinigami is proven and L would have a hell of a time trying to argue that it's not some death god sitting up there and fucking about with people, he could in theory prove that either Light or Misa, beyond a reasonable doubt, are Kira based on the evidence collected.
It'd be hard, and he I don't think he had everything he needed by the time he died, but in theory it is possible.
Would L Have Been Satisfied with a Confession?
Probably.
Neither Light nor Misa ever gave him one and the point of the torture arc does seem to be to get them to admit something, no matter how invalid the questioning methods (in most modern courts of law, for obvious reasons, confession extracted via torture such as forced imprisonment, drug use, false execution, and all the methods L did in fact use in canon are not admissible).
If L didn't want a confession, or wouldn't be satisfied with one, there's little point in blindfolding Misa for over fifty days, drugging her, and asking "are you Kira?"

I woke up like an hour early and based on having been up late, was planning on sleeping an extra hour today, but then when I quickly checked my phone while I was out of bed, I had an alert from a banking app, saying to verify my email because they tried to email me and it bounced.
and I figured they must’ve had my deadname email at the domain I didn’t renew on file somewhere, like for e-statements or something, but I looked and it was my primary email at my current main domain, and so immediately I was in a bit of a panic
And so I ran upstairs to my computer and checked to make sure my billing didn’t fail for my email, like maybe one of the accounts that I changed my name on was my billing for that and it needed to be updated, but it was fine.
And then I remembered how I changed some DNS settings a few weeks ago when I set up a website at the domain. and of course, I had no recollection of exactly when I last gotten an email, so I didn’t know if it was down for that whole time maybe, which would be pretty bad… so I check my DNS settings and they all looked fine
But while I was in there, I seen an alert at the top of the page saying to verify reachability of whois information or they will suspend my domain after 15 days, and I knew I had never received any verification email from them…
So I try to resend it, at which point I realize that it’s not going to work because they suspended my domain where the email is…. And I guess tying my domain settings to an email on that domain sounds like a bad idea in hindsight, but to me that he is information has always just been a stupid thing. I have to fill out that I don’t want to, and unrelated to maintaining operation of the domain.
So I updated it to an alternate domain and look for a verification email, and there was… nothing. I checked my spam and still nothing, so I tried resending the verification, and it said it failed because they already sent me verification, which in my eyes doesn’t seem like a very good reason to fail resending...
but after looking for a few few more minutes, I hit the resend button again and this time it worked, and the email showed up… In my spam folder. And I looked back further and sure enough there was the original verification email from 17 days ago in my spam folder with a note saying people frequently mark emails from this address as spam.
I don’t know if people are frequently putting fraudulent whois information that people are marking spam, but my theory is that a lot of clueless executives probably end up with their emails or an email distribution group they’re on in the whois information and thinking it looks like spam and marking it as such.
but it’s really annoying that all of the verification emails were going to spam and that when I change the information there was an alert on the page saying that the information update is being processed, and then after a little bit, it pops up and says it was successful, but I then have to leave and come back to the page to make it tell me that it’s waiting on verification or it will literally shut down my email and my website…
so I verified the email and then there was nothing and I’m hoping that it’s just an hour or so to come back online and not days where my incoming emails are bouncing…
ok… just now literally while typing that sentence, I got another email saying that they have unsuspended my domain, and my website is reachable again…… phew 😮‍💨
I hope I didn’t get any important emails this weekend

hmm, for the writing ask game maybe 🤔 🫘 💖 ? :>
🙏🙏🙏💜💜💜
🤔 Are there any new characters you want to write about?
YES, I REALLY REALLY want to write some introspective Misa fic. Mostly focusing on her trauma & melancholy emptiness, but with hints of implied remisa & internalized comphet in the background. No concrete ideas yet, but thoughts are brewing~
🫘 Spill the beans. What's a new project you're doing this year?
Hanahaki Light!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am determined to make this fic happen, even if it takes the whole year. I've finished plotting Light's emotional journey & know how it's going to end, so now it's just a matter of figuring out how everything fits in with the events of part 2 of DN. Also currently at the stage where I'm trying to stop the ideas from ballooning any more than they already have... I've learned my limit the hard way, & if it gets any bigger than this I know I'm going to get burnt out or lose my drive, and then the fic will never see the light of day. Crossing my fingers that that doesn't happen 🤞.
💖 What is your primary writing goal for this year?
My primary writing goal every year is to write 2 original short stories that I am proud enough of to try to submit for publishing, and to write at least 1 fanfic. In the past the main critique I have received has been "rich prose & characters, but not enough plot to justify them". Which is honestly totally true... for both my original work AND fan work. I am fully aware that I have been trying to get away with being a tone-piece-only girlie 😅. So I think this year, I will adjust my goal to 2 original short stories WITH PLOT, and 1 fanfic WITH PLOT.

Death Note OC Masterpost! Yayy!
I've been meaning to flesh out a DN OC for a little bit, so now I'm putting her out there.
(@lawlietscaramels thanks for inspiring me to think more about this character!)
Okay okay I'm gonna vomit so many thoughts here I hope you're ready
Okay, so she has quite a few names, but the primary one she goes by is her "stage name" Echo DeTrill. Her pronouns are she/her, but when she gets older, she'd probably learn about and wouldn't mind they/them.
So first off, what Echo looks like. Here's a very very rushed sketch of what she'd look like at age 20-ish (2009):
Tumblr media
She's pretty pale and has grey eyes. Her hair is naturally dark brown/almost black, and she has one streak in in her bangs on her left (our right) that is naturally almost white. In her 20s, she tends to experiment and dye that streak with bright blue and red stripes. Her main colors are black, blue, and a little red. Echo's jewelry and accessories are homemade, with the exception of the wristband on her left arm. The two dots on her cheeks are dark freckles that she's had as long as she can remember.
And that brings us to backstory! Echo's name at birth was Kasey Nees, and she was born in the States in 1989 before being put up for adoption. She was discovered in an orphanage by Watari and brought to Wammy's when she was about 3 or 4. When Watari took Kasey in, he gave her the codename "DIX" (pronounced Deece) because the wristband she was wearing had the number 509 printed on it. Until she was about 11 or so, Dix assumed that this codename was a reference to the french number 10. She thought that maybe it was her ranking at Wammy's (they don't actually rank the kids past, like, 3).
The reason she's at Wammy's is because she's got very good powers of perception. She plays tricks on younger Wammy's kids by claiming that the freckles on her cheeks are a second set of eyes that she can see out of. Even with her eyes closed, she's able to pick up on things using her other senses. Using her perception, she's very good at games like poker. (Whether she's good at reading her opponents or just cheating in ways they can't see is up for debate).
When she turns 17 (2006), Dix leaves the orphanage and heads to Tokyo to find something fun to do. In Japan, she uses the fake name Mei Aimoto (相本 芽衣). However, she hasn't been following the Kira investigation closely since L died and doesn't feel like chasing after Near/Mello. Instead, she pursues other random interests. Mei's excellent hearing makes her quite a good DJ, so she winds up in the music scene for a bit. By 2009, she's changed careers slightly and made a bit of a name for herself as a radio host under the stage name "Echo Detrill". She stays away from talking about Kira and focuses on "fun stuff" on her show like games and puzzles. A good chunk of her show is reviewing new games and talking about pop culture things that aren't related to Kira. Sometimes, she'll come up with riddles for her listeners to solve on the air, and she'll try to solve callers' riddles too. Echo tries to provide an escape from people's stressful lives, and in turn the show keeps her from thinking about her past and her old friends at Wammy's.
(That doesn't stop her from randomly dropping crazy lore about herself on the show. Some of it is lies, but even the true stuff comes off as so bizarre that no one believes her. "Yeah I know L. He's some British dude named Nate who plays with Lego," sounds wild coming from your favorite goofy radio host.)

‘The Impact of Social Media Bans on Chinese Users and Global Connections’
MDA20009 Digital Communities
Hello everyone, this is our last post T^T! To my course mates, the semester has come to an end, hope you all had a great holiday! Also, an early 🎄Merry Christmas❄️ to everyone!!!
The quick spread of social media around the world has brought people and communities together. However, some countries maintain restrictive media environments that make it difficult for people to use these platforms freely, with China being a good example. The Chinese government has implemented strict censorship measures to control news, social media and online communication. The ‘Great Firewall’ prevents users from accessing popular platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Google services. Despite these restrictions, millions of Chinese users have found ways around these barriers, raising significant questions about how censorship affects lives, national identity and global connectivity. This raises important questions about how these restrictions shape individual lives, national identities, and broader networks of global interaction.
Tumblr media
Understanding the Great Firewall
According to Britannica, the Great Firewall (also known as the Golden Shield Project) is a key component of China's Golden Shield Project, combines regulatory and technological measures to censor and monitor internet usage (Gisonna, 2024). It employs tools like keyword filtering, bandwidth throttling, and Deep Packet Inspection to block specific content. This system not only restricts foreign platforms but also pressures journalists through dismissals and arrests, fostering self-censorship. As journalist Evan Osnos observed, China's digital links to the world are increasingly deteriorating, emphasizing its isolationist internet policy.
U.S. technology in China
Tumblr media
China's restrictive policies make it challenging for U.S. tech companies to compete, with platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Google blocked. To illustrate, in early 2013, Google withdrew its services after several conflicts with Chinese censorship, and in late 2014, China disabled Google's email service Gmail, which raised concerns at the U.S. State Department (Xu, 2017). Furthermore, in early 2014, Google chairman Eric Schmidt indicated that encryption could facilitate entry into the Chinese market for Google. However, these plans encountered a challenge in March 2014 when the government took action against the social networking app WeChat. The government's decision to crack down on the social networking app WeChat to the deletion of the accounts of several prominent political liberals. Subsequently, new regulations were announced for 'instant messaging tools' on mobile chat apps, such as WeChat, which has over 750 million users and is increasingly seen as a platform for mass dissent that can bypass censors (Xu, 2017). Gmail’s ban and the crackdown on politically liberal accounts on WeChat demonstrated the government’s tightening control.
Tumblr media
Social Media Censorship: How does it work?
The Great Firewall of China employs sophisticated methods to enforce internet censorship and block unwanted content (Xu, 2017):
Network Blackholing: A fundamental technique involves maintaining a list of banned IP addresses. If a user attempts to access a prohibited site, the connection is immediately dropped, effectively severing access to restricted content。
Quality of Service (QoS) Filtering: This advanced approach employs deep packet inspection to analyze data traffic and identify connections attempting to bypass censorship through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). QoS filtering intercepts these connections before they reach their destination, undermining one of the primary tools users rely on to circumvent the firewall.
Domain Name System (DNS) Hijacking: DNS hijacking disrupts the mapping of IP addresses to website names, preventing users from accessing flagged domains. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are systematically targeted, ensuring that only approved alternatives like Weibo and WeChat dominate the market.
URL Filtering: URL filtering involves the use of proxies to examine requested web addresses for banned keywords. This precise control allows authorities to selectively block pages on platforms like Wikipedia, allowing access to general content while censoring politically sensitive topics.
To learn more about how social media censorship works, here are the views shared by Karoline Kan, a Beijing-based journalist and writer:
The Impact of China's Social Media Censorship
Positive Impacts: Government and Domestic Industry Benefits
From a government perspective, the Great Firewall serves multiple purposes. It blocks access to foreign platforms such as Google, Twitter and Facebook, which were blocked as a result of uprisings such as the 2009 Xinjiang riots. The government is trying to maintain political unity and national security, by limiting access to other forms of governance and lifestyles, Firewalls have also helped Chinese internet companies like Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba and Weibo to grow and succeed without competition from international rivals. This approach to cyber-sovereignty is often seen as a way of protecting national stability (Kannan, A. 2017).
Negative Impacts: Limitations on Innovation and Freedom
From the Chinese citizens perspective, these restrictions pose significant challenges to entrepreneurs, influencers and professionals in accessing global markets and networks, thereby stifling business opportunities and cultural exchanges. Strict government control of online content hinders dissent and creative freedom because users know that surveillance is everywhere. As a result, many people use VPNs to get access to blocked content, but these methods are not foolproof and can be blocked. Some have opted for more advanced tools such as Tor or SSH tunnelling, but these are not for everyone (Xu, 2017).
Despite these challenges, Chinese internet users have found alternative ways to get around the firewall. For instance, tools like Ultrasurf, Psiphon, and Freegate let users set up proxy servers, and microblogging platforms like Weibo have become places for people to talk about things they would normally be banned from discussing. On top of that, over the years, internet users have created a whole range of visual puns, memes, acronyms and slang to get around the censorship, which has transformed online spaces into complex arenas for political and social debate (Xu, 2017).
Global Implications
Censorship not only affects China, but also reshapes global digital dynamics. The fragmentation of the Internet, where users from different countries are often separated into different cyberspaces, limits cross-cultural dialogue and global collaboration. For international brands and content creators, the Chinese market holds great opportunities, but navigating these constraints is often too complex, leading to missed opportunities. On a larger scale, China's digital isolation has exacerbated geopolitical tensions, leading to a growing digital divide between China and the West (Kannan, A. 2017). These tensions complicate international diplomacy and exacerbate the fragmentation of the global digital ecosystem.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, China's 'Great Firewall' is a sophisticated and multifaceted approach to internet censorship that has a significant impact on the online environment for Chinese citizens. While the firewall helps the government keep political stability and protect domestic industries, it also stifles creativity, limits global connectivity, and hinders free expression. Chinese users are creative in finding ways around the restrictions, but these policies contribute to the fragmentation of the global digital landscape and exacerbate geopolitical tensions. Ultimately, censorship policies greatly affect China's digital ecosystem and its interaction with the global community.

So an absolute clown by the name DN WhatIf3.0 stole my work and posted it to YouTube. He had a shitty AI reader rattling it off over a loop of him playing Fortnite. Nowhere in the video did he indicate that it wasn't his work -- he even changed the title. The only place my name was mentioned was deep in the video description.
When this was brought to my attention, I filed a copyright strike and YouTube took it down. I thought that was the end of it.
Today, DN had the brilliant idea to email me and ask if I'd remove the strike, because he'd definitely credit me this time, he just didn't know how before. I politely but firmly told him that the primary issue, beyond crediting, was that he posted my work without my consent. I would not remove the strike, do not contact me again.
Somehow, this registered to him as "I just need to ask permission." He decided that clearly, all he needed to do was comment on the fic that he'd like to post the fic in an audio format for people who prefer to listen rather than read!
I deleted the comment and blocked him.
I'm not opposed to my fics being made into audio. Some years ago, someone contacted me for permission to turn one of my one shots into an audiobook, and I gave it. It was cool as hell! I nearly cried the first time, listening to something I wrote voice acted by such talented people. I wouldn't be against it happening again!
But you have to get permission and you have to credit the author. Otherwise, you're plagiarizing, and hbomberguy will be hiding in your closet when you get home tonight.
