okay so I can't stop thinking about a nerdy prudes star trek au

Pete: Android, Chief of Science

second “son” and creation of infamous non-federation cyberneticist t'noy karaxis (because come on that just sounds like a Star Trek name) 

t’noy’s first creation (ted) was considered unstable/aggressive by the federation standards and was incredibly dangerous, but when they went to handle the situation both ted and t’noy karaxis had ~mysteriously disappeared~

pete doesn’t know where they went either and he’s always very worried about them showing up again (but also, secretly, really wants at least ted to)

pete was never completely finished because of the disappearance, so he’s faulty, prone to power fluctuations (woah,,,, almost like low blood sugar,,, crazy,,,,)

he’s got an emotion chip, but it’s also faulty, in that it spikes hard into overdrive, and he has a hard time controlling it some of the time

If he’s feeling really upset/worried about something important/embarrassed he’s prone to remove it (especially when he’s younger/before he’s got his established friend-group-crew; they really try to stop him from doing that)

VERY IN LOVE WITH STEPH BUT HE DOES NOT REALLY UNDERSTAND IT AND IT’S STRESSING HIM OUT

started just as a normal science officer but like six people died and now he’s got the position– he’s also really stressed out about that precedent

he loves outer space so bad, they regularly have to reign him in on ground missions or during very dangerous space-issues because he’s just so excited about learning cool new space facts

his room is just books and experiments and a huge window so when everyone else goes to sleep he kind of just Stares out at the stars

he has little cyber-glasses that ‘help him analyze things’ but mostly he wears them because he thinks they look cool

not great with people both for android reasons and for ‘spent the vast majority of his early existence entirely alone and isolated, finishing building himself’ reasons 

Steph: Half-betazoid, Security Officer (She’s….. the brawn……. he’s the brains)

okay first things first I know betazoid's irises that are all black but I've always thought it would be cool if it was their whole eye and this is my au, gene roddenberry, so leave me alone

back to actual au: her dad (human) is a high ranking starfleet officer who nepo-babies her through the academy and onto a starship but he’s incredibly open, both vocally and projecting-his-emotions wise, that he’s doing it to get rid of her

her mom (betazoid) died when she was really little and she was raised across multiple starships/bases by her dad, so she’s entirely cut off from that part of her culture

she’s flying completely blind with her emotion/mind reading abilities and from a very young age has learned how to take advantage of it for her own benefit

it’s basically masking times four hundred because she’s navigating all of her relationships and interactions based on the thoughts of those around her/what they’d like or want from her

she’s constantly subjected to the really gross thoughts of her crewmates and it’s GROSS AND BAD and has really heightened her defenses

especially in her academy days (at the behest of her friends) or when she’s feeling threatened she can and will use her mind reading abilities to be really, really mean but,,,, she doesn’t do it much anymore and does feel very bad about it

she really hates pete at first because he’s the first person she’s never been able to read the mind of and she doesn’t know how to navigate it/it’s way, way too vulnerable for her but it actually ends up making them way closer because it’s the first relationship she’s ever had based fully on trust

never actually gave a shit about star fleet or it’s missions before, she was honestly really annoyed by the academy and her dad all but forcing her to take this position, but it’s… sort of growing on her (don’t tell anyone)

Grace: Human, Medical Officer

human and incredibly proud of that

she’s like…. maybe a little prejudiced about it,,, she certainly doesn’t mean to be,,,, but she’s always the one to deliver that classic star trek ‘I thought this race didn’t have BLANK advancement, humans do this better, etc...’ lines that kicks off an episode to tell you about the new alien race of the episode

both her parents worked with star fleet but never actually made it off of earth (because they didn’t want to) so she’s her family’s equivalent of ‘kind of a rebel’ for wanting to be on a starship

she’s just a really high achiever and is treating it sort of like a mission trip to help other planets

(she also just… really wanted to and thinks it’s cool but she thinks that's kind of selfish so she keeps that a secret) 

doesn’t trust pete and is at least somewhat miffed about him not needing help from medical 

met steph in academy and was really, really, really excited when they got assigned on the same ship (steph was NOT)

huge stickler for rules and regulations and it’s either incredibly helpful or causes all their problems there's no in between

morally against the holodeck and no one is necessarily clear on why

because her parents worked for star fleet on earth she still lived with them during academy so being on the ship is her first time ever being apart from them and it’s causing some sort of crisis (though who know which way said crisis is going to hard pivot) (you hope it’s in a gay way but it’s also grace so it could be in a space murder way,.,., only time will tell)

Ruth: Human, Engineer

human and livid about it

desperately wants to be captain one day, and has dreams of being on the bridge, but it became clear very quickly in the academy that she was too anxious to ‘boldly go’ as far as she’d need to to achieve that :(

she’s very good at engineering but she thinks it’s boring, and she thinks just being a human amongst all these cool aliens is lame, and she kind of is under the impression everyone is judging her for it (they’re not)

don’t let this bitch around an visiting vulcans she will ask them about pon farr

she asks steph about “the phase” IMMEDIATELY (context: the phase is where mature betazoids suddenly become horny forever basically) and was like ‘is that going to happen even though ur only half??’ and steph, who had never heard about it, was HORRIFIED

met richie and pete in academy and thought they were so cool she needed them to be her friends or she’d die

they were both very okay with it 

they’re all buddies :)

she helps pete with any repairs when he gets damaged or something happens- she’s the only one he trusts to do anything other than himself 

(... she also wants to test if he’s actually ‘fully functional’... pete’s said no so far though :/)

Richie: Andorian, Communications Officer

he’s not much of a fighter, despite being andorian, and initially wanted to go more into the artistic side of his culture but his fascination with other planets/cultures/people as well as the concept of ‘boldly going’ pushed him into joining starfleet

still draws/creates art in his free time tho

managed to be fluent in like forty different alien languages and the universal translator pisses him off in CONCEPT (even though it’s still incredibly helpful that he doesn’t Need it and is part of why he has his job)

he keeps his room freezing and pete’s the only one willing to hang out with him in it because he can’t get cold :) 

he’s mad he has to wear the red uniform because of his job >:( he’s blue why can’t he wear blue >:(

constantly gets in trouble for wearing increasingly non regulation layers over his uniform

single handedly caused the tribble outbreak on their starship

he’s banned from ground duty anytime they’re on a random planet because he gets over excited and keeps almost dying from getting straight up phaser-set-to-stunned (because he’s not only andorian but he’s a particularly fragile andorian like it doesn’t even need to be a phaser pistol just a normal phaser fucks him up)

also spends hours on the holodeck, often with ruth, and they like to drag pete with them even if he doesn’t really get it

Introducing my fanschool project...

I have two TWST fanschools in progress but I want to show the one I have been developing for a long while...

Luxglow Prep (Fanschool based on Pixar)

Location of the school (Pinpointed on the game's map):

The school is situated in the Land of Dawning, a distance away from Sage's Island but still relatively close.

Description of the School:

"A magical academy that has the same long-standing reputation as Night Raven College, its door are open to students of all backgrounds who wishes to learn and familiarize with the concept of balanced morality."

This school is founded much later than Night Raven College, but has gained an equal amount of recognition by scholars who are given options after their elementary graduation for its highly advanced facilities and utilities, as well as a very well-organized study environment. Thanks to the advancements of magitech, Luxglow Prep is the first ever arcane academy that adapted the use of the technology into their navigation, organization and power source management. At the core of this academy, lies a highly advanced artificial intelligence going by the name "Lampi", who is tasked with managing the student body, the school network and the dorm sorting process. Unlike Night Raven College, their historical inspirations come from spoken tales about each dorm's motto and theme.

How the school system works:

Because it is more advanced technologically, the school system is vastly different than the other arcane academies in Twisted Wonderland. The admission process revolves a transportation vehicle (similar to MVR-A from WALL-E) arriving at the student's residence, before being asked to rest inside a special pod designed with soft cushions like the NRC coffins. They'll be put into a slumber within the pod by a specially-programmed sleep mist administrator.

Once they arrived at the academy, they'll be placed in a stasis chamber, which is where the sorting ceremony will be held, and will be awakened when the time calls for it. Once awoken, they'll be dressed in the ceremonial robes by automated androids situated in the chamber and brought to the sorting area. The sorting area is where Luxglow Prep's sacred magitech artefact resides, a massive enchanted lamp that is said to sort mages by illuminating them with the light that befits their aptitude and their dorm.

The dorms in Luxglow Prep are labeled as "houses" instead (like sorority houses in colleges), and instead of travelling by mirrors, they travel by doors (similar to ones from Monsters Inc), enchanted doorways that can lead a person to a desired location or contains a dimensional pocket space upon entering.

Luxglow Prep Uniforms:

For the uniform look, I wanted to capture the feel of more rich type of school uniforms with the sweater vest and long sleeve shirts. The PE outfit is mostly a full-body tights and a jersey set they can wear. For the alchemy/lab fit, I took some reference inspirations from the CDA hazmat suits from Monsters Inc as a base. And for the ceremonial robe, I picked the one fit Merida is dressed in from Brave, and made it androgynous enough to work as a ceremonial fit. As for the standard wand they'll use, I went for the staff Ian Lightfoot wields from Onward. (Yeap, a lot of pixar references are packed in one go here).

Hi!!! Hope you are doing well. I usually play Ikevil EN but since there are speculation of Vivi's route coming soon in JP server. I want to play the ikevil jp version but the problem is I don't know anything about Japanese so probably gonna use some screen translators. Just wanna ask you which screen translators do you use? Is screen translation enough or do we require any other form of translation? How much time does it take to read 1 chapter as compared to EN version? Do you enjoy playing JP version same as the EN version or does translation work ruin the experience????

Hi, dear anon. I'm fine, thank you, I hope you're doing well as well. I'm very happy that you are interested at least to try the JP version of the game. Who knows, maybe you'll like it to such an extent that you'll want to try other games. And it will significantly increase the variety of the games that you can read. This is a huge step. So I understand your concern.

Vivi is truly a big mystery and I'm looking forward to his route myself. So, yeah… Give us that gorgeous man already!

As usual, I talk a lot… so get ready to read a lot.

I started reading JP games about a year and a half ago. And I wasn't familiar with Japanese at all. I still don't know the language, but the brain tends to remember similarities… based on previous experience. So, the words that I've seen quite often, I've already memorized, but… no more than that. Since I never had a goal to learn a language, I never took the time to do so. That's the result. But… you never know what's going to happen in the future, life is very unpredictable, so maybe at some point I'll find the motivation to learn it.

Apps

I use several translation apps on my Android phone. One of them gives you a very vague idea of what lies behind the JP text. The other is more accurate. I will provide the links at the end of the post. But both of them have bad days, sometimes weeks, and they refuse to work properly. In this case, I take screenshots on JP and use other programs from my computer. The screenshots that you see in my posts are a combination of both of these methods, in addition, I'm paraphrasing the text to the point I like the way it sounds. And it takes quite some time. I do this so that people understand what is hidden behind the JP text, so that my jokes are more obvious and easier to understand. And maybe… to arise an interest in other projects that have not yet been translated or will never be translated into English. I am so full of myself.

Time

For those who do not plan to make posts, but only want to read, it does not take much time. But it will still take longer. Depending on how quickly you learn to understand a very strange mechanical translated text. And it depends on how long the chapters are. For example… Genjiden's chapters are longer than Princes or Villains. So it took me about an hour to read one chapter (and that's if I didn't get distracted in the process… my mind is so easily distracted). And it takes me about 30 minutes to read Princess or Villains (if it's not an avatar challenge story, they are pretty long). It's not that much. But if I want to read more than one chapter at a time… my brain might start protesting and just shut down… It's like I'm reading a text, but I have no idea what I'm reading. Perhaps the problem is that English is not my native language, so I kind of read in two foreign languages at the same time. It's quite difficult.

Experience

If you need basic information... for example, about what happened in the story, or about the dates... just the facts, you will find this method very useful. But... It is quite difficult to see the beauty of the text, the lyrics of some lines. Sometimes I spend more time than usual trying to understand the text in more detail, and it's beautiful, but... It takes more, much more time to read it. And not many people are ready for this.

But. There is always a but. I don't know how... or why... but I feel a strong connection to the Genjiden. Despite the fact... I don't quite understand some of their lines, but the emotions behind them are almost palpable. And I was even thinking about doing some translations. But for a person who doesn't know the language, it's too difficult and (my poor head is splitting at the very thought of it) requires a lot of brain activity. I don't have much free time, and I'm always busy with something else. I need to focus... Somehow.

I like to read stories on JP… because there are characters that haven't been added to English games yet, and I really like them. I really like new events… They are not so difficult to read and do not take much time, compared to the main routes. That's why I'm always happy to do it. And for me, this is a great chance to learn something new about the characters that I really love, and there are planty of them. So… It's really worth it to me.

So, it's all very personal. You may find this method suitable for yourself, or you may not find it, only your experience will tell you. But if you want to do it, do it. Do not delay. As Clavis said... there is no better time than the present.

I've been using it for quite some time now.

Instant translate (google play). It doesn't give a very good result, but it can be used constantly and for free. There is a paid version, and it can give you better results.

Gaminik (google play). This one gave a better translation (not always), but limited the number of times you can use it per day. The quantity is constantly changing, and the way you can add more. There is also a paid version.

When I was looking for programs, I tried a few and found that these two were more suitable for me. There may be even better options now, but I haven't looked.

On my computer, I use websites that convert images into text. There are a lot of them. And after that I use websites that translate from Japanese to English. There are a lot of them as well. I don't recommend Google Translate. It will not translate your text, it will find something similar and provide you with a translation of another text.

I really like this option. DeepL. It's not accurate, but it does have a dictionary that sometimes helps you better understand the line.

Another good option that I found quite recently is quillbot. It gives a pretty good translation (very pleasant to the ear) and has a paraphrasing function. I don't use it often, but then I do I always surprised how different the same phrase can look. But there is no dictionary on this site, so I can't be completely sure that they are translated correctly and not the way Google does it.

This is not an ideal options, I'm sure other people could recommend something better. But I hope this helps.

I'm mostly just bouncing off the ideas @hereticcryptid shares with me, so the credit for the og discussion of android!jiggy goes to them :'D

That being said, a friend shared her ideas of another android AU some time ago and I loved it so much! I'm still hoping she continues working on that wip some day ^^;

It was ruoyao of course, but included dark LXC and it was so fascinating to me how the roles got pretty much reversed there, with a kind and gentle but possessive LXC that created MY as the perfect partner and went sorta Mothel Gothel on him out of misplaced protectiveness -pretty much the worst side of the Lan gene in canon.

But MY was very curious by nature, yet all the answers he got of the outside world were reduced to "don't worry about it, you have everything you need/want here :)", and eventually escaped, getting in trouble as soon as he stepped outside lol.

Cue uni professor and disgraced inventor/scientist WRH (funny how we all just want to see him fall from grace xD). His research on AI and androids got controversial and eventually seized and "destroyed" by coworker LQR, who saw the danger and immorality in creating something capable of self-awareness. Turns out that it was based on his work that LXC created MY, so when WRH finds a little android wandering around like he was born yesterday (bc he kinda was), he's instantly fascinated with him and takes him in to try to understand how something so advanced could exist.

What I loved about this AU is how ridiculously adorable MY was! He's a mix of his usual cunning mind and eagerness to learn with someone who legit is just experiencing the outside world for the first time, especially since, unlike Rapunzel, he wasn't really fed scary stories of what lurks outside, so he's more trusting. And unlike LXC, WRH is more than happy to teach MY whatever he wants to learn, not only to satisfy his own curiosity about how a machine like that could process knowledge, but also bc he IS a professor and one with hella high standards, so MY is just the perfect student: so well-behave, giving him all his attention and making smart questions and observations. Besides, there's a sense of deja vu the more he learns about how MY works and was created... also he is strained from his sons, so there's that too lol.

At the beginning is all just transactional, MY latching onto someone who is finally willing to indulge his curiosity, and WRH acquiring a little pet project to make up for all the experiments he was never allowed to conduct. But if you know me, you know the relationship doesn't stay there xD.

Sadly, bestie didn't continue the story behond that and tbh I don't remember much of what came later from my conversations with her, other than LXC eventually going out looking for MY with the help of other androids he created that weren't as perfect as MY, like the Nie bros.

I must confess that I haven't thought of android!JGY myself, but it's a great concept that I should probaky dedicate more brain power to :'D

Long response to this one and lore drop so heads up!

Theodora Cellamoun is pretty much my base OC for any universe, since she ended up being a dimension traveler at a very young age. (Gravity Falls reference because that's what started me to do any of this in the first place and don't really want to forget my origins)

Each variant of this OC goes through similar events up to a certain point:

- The loss of her house and family from a young age and having to manage on her own.

- ending up in Gravity Falls and meeting up Stanford Pines and being her little assistant but also more since Ford enjoyed her presence and curiosity and wanted to teach her so she homeschooled her the best he could. (She ended up in that town around the age of 10)

- skipping to the age of 14 when on one faithful night, Cipher took over Ford's body, things seemed eerie around that time, the portal project was complete and Theo got too curious and ended up being beaten up to death by her possessed father figure and thrown into the interdimensional vortex.

- 4 years of dimension traveling on her own and having to learn how to adapt and survive through any means necessary. (There's also and AU regarding Theo in the DB universe that is different from her usual storyline but that's just because of a decision she took, but we'll talk about Never Left AU another time)

- age 18, she finally reunites with Stanford but he's much older. For her it was only 4 years, while for Ford it was 24 years and still counting as fugitives, outlaws and keeping up dimension hopping.

- 6 years later the two return to Gravity Falls, Ford acts pissy on Stanley because he tried to get his brother back, she doesn't comment anything and just listens and watches and is immediately rather pleasantly impressed by the twins.

- takes part in some cannon events of that universe but her presence doesn't affect the course of the events and they all go smoothly (even if unpleasant like the Weirdmagedon)

- post Weirdmagedon and twins leaving Gravity Falls, Theo at the age of 24 is left with uncertainty in her heart, since she feels like after all this time she no longer belongs there and thus embarcs on a journey of her own volition and continues to dimension travel on her own.

- as fun as the journey is, she still fights with that feeling of unfulfillment and emptiness and doesn't fully comprehend it.

- ends up in the Dragon Ball universe and heard the rumors of some wishing orbs that can grant you any wish, and that seemed like a fine promising idea.

- tries to steall the dragon balls from Bulma (because obviously she collected them all and that's where they all ended up) and was successful, however Goku and Vegeta chased after her, until they finally found her trying to figure out how to activate the dragon balls. Vegeta recognized Theo (they met in the past and it wasn't pretty for either of them), and warned Kakarot, but Goku used his charisma and diplomacy and ended up befriending her after finding out that she just wanted to wish for something to make her happy, but didn't really know what.

- because of Goku and Bulma being rather impressed with her skills, she ends up in the FighterZ inner circle and works at capsule Corp along with Bulma on all sorts of projects.

- Bulma and Theo would work on a very ambitious project, that will end up disastrously, since Bulma got away almost unscathed and Theo pretty much died in the process and saving Bulma from having a similar fate.

- because the dragon balls have been used at the time, and Bulma felt partially guilty about what happened, she decided to "fix her up", thus Theo's corpse being used in order for her to be reborn as T-H30.

- T-H30 has some attributes that Gero's previous creation have and even more, but even so T-H30 is still an experimental somewhat unstable prototype that needs to be under surveillance and tested periodically in order to make sure everything is in check.

At the time I wasn't sure where to place Theo/T-H30 and I thought at the time that Bulma and Hedo working together to save a life was a nice idea, but then I remembered that Trunks and Goten were teenagers at the time and the attribution of T-H30 being their babysitter wouldn't fit so instead I decided to place T-H30 somewhere, perhaps after Resurrection F. The idea of Hedo having an android lab assistant is still something I want to keep in mind and I think the two would get along nicely.

So yeah, T-H30 was still a work in progress and she still is, but at least now I have set some more things about her. Sorry that this ask was long but I wanted to explain as best and briefly as I could.

Anyways, this is basically the OC's evolution up to the T-H30 point. Enjoy!

Summary:

He knew prolonged stress wasn’t healthy, but he didn’t know how to fix it for Kenji. He’d never seen him stressed like this, so he studied every prominent article that he could find. He quickly learned humans could be stressed out by almost anything – changes in environment, not eating right, not enough sleep, emotional turmoil, lack of socializing, and lack of physical touch.

The last one caught his eye. He knew Kenji was very social, rarely a quiet moment when they were together, but he couldn’t recall him ever touching anyone. From what he read, humans needed touch for both bonding and relieving stressors… maybe that was it. Multiple days of grueling study, everyone locked away in their own rooms, and most of their compatriots at school were doing the same…

Makoto nodded to himself, feet quietly tapping as he moved upstairs to charge. He had a plan, but for now they all needed to rest.

day 16 :) this is a continuation based off Farewell by scout_eki on ao3! if u haven't heard of them pls read all their stuff their works are so so good

He couldn't get those hours he'd spent with Dream out of his head. The stark contrast between him and Nightmare had been startling, uncomfortable even. Dream was unbearably kind, so patient and genuine and just-nice. How he let Cyber ramble about what he loved, and even seemed interested as well. Not to mention being quite easy on the eyes. Hair like liquid gold, beautifully tan freckled skin, and eyes green as a lit up circuit board. How could Cyber not like him?

So, in the weeks since The Experiment, he dedicated every hour of his free time into creating an android as close to Dream as he could get.

From what he could glean in their time together, Cyber was able to draw out several different designs for his project. Dream possessed slightly more muscle mass than Nightmare, walked at a steadier pace, spoke lighter and faster. All this and more ran through Cyber's head as he brainstormed until finally he settled on a concrete design.

The materials were relatively easy to collect what with Nightmare being far too easy to persuade combined with his own personal stock. Building machines was nothing new to him. After all, he'd built all his equipment himself. Everything from his computer to his EKG heart monitor to his X-Ray machine were crafted by his two hands. He preferred it that way; no chance of faulty equipment.

But an android was no defibrillator or MRI scanner. While hardly unheard of in this society, still only the elites could afford them and the companies that manufactured them were 'tight-lipped,' to say the least. So, he had little precedence to fall back on.

Just three weeks and four days after The Experiment and he had a prototype moving about.

After four weeks, it carried out verbal commands and could multitask.

After six weeks, it looked a lot more like Dream in the outfit Cyber had bought it, but in doing so, he might've humanized it too much. Looking at its face--the face he made--felt like an invasion of privacy. His only references were Nightmare who kept his mask on all the time and the few hours with Dream where he'd quickly deduced he probably wasn't supposed to be seeing his face. So, his best solution was a simple screen that could display different emotions, done through a variety of default emoticons Cyber had installed in its display software.

And after two months, it completed tasks Cyber was certain he didn't code.

When he awoke one morning to the smell of bacon and eggs and freshly squeezed orange juice, he recognized three things. One: there wasn't a doubt in his mind about what a mess the kitchen probably looked like. Two: he should really remember to eat more because there was no way an android could make actually tasty food. And three: he needed to take a look at Dreamoid's--the name he'd settled on for it--programming stat.

To his utter bewilderment, Dreamoid's mental and emotional capacity had been growing exponentially since the day he wired the circuits. Little bits at a time until he could decipher several emotions and possible mind states just by looking at a person's facial expression.

Scary, but also, "Incredible..." he breathed, eyes darting back and forth over the lines of code on his screen. It seemed that with the way he'd set up the various algorithms and what data values he'd fed the starting points had developed into a pseudo-machine learning behavior. Dreamoid got smarter and more precise with each new interaction, even recognizing the complexities of what he saw enough to establish connections between present situations, previous context, and future possibilities. On top of all that, he'd evolved to preemptively make decisions that would avoid what he categorized as 'negative emotion states' and increase the likelihood of positive ones.

The worst of it? Dreamoid consciously tracked his own states, his own consciousness.

Cyber slumped back in his chair. It was official. The robot takeover would happen tomorrow and he was to blame.

How had Dreamoid not completely subjugated him by now? He was more emotionally intelligent than him!

Dreamoid's screen lit up with a big question mark. "What's bothering you, Maker?"

"Uh, it's nothing you need to worry about, Dream. I'm just pondering over something..."

The screen changed, three dots in a row bounced to show Dreamoid was formulating a response. Finally, he settled on a simple smiley face. "Okay. If you say so."

Well, that wasn't ominous at all. Cyber simultaneously feared and excitedly anticipated his future.

Another day of not doing much since I had to go to IKEA for bedroom shopping! But that didn't stop me from coding... on my phone. I am semi-addicting to coding on my phone now! I have this spare android phone so I was just in the car ride to IKEA playing with a test site using HTML and CSS and it works nicely! Didn't make anything complex but just to test thing with the CSS!

🍂 What's your favorite programming language? Why?

Mmmh it would have to be Python! Everytime I go back to it, because of everytime I don't give it attention and forget everything, I'm always excited to learn again. I like making console apps with it and eventually I want to learn Django/Flask and how to build Python GUI based projects in it!

Online Privacy and Security Tips

I am a firm believer that people should be able to be anonymous and secure online. Over a lifetime of trial and error, I've slowly learned the best ways to protect myself, and I'd like to pass on that knowledge to anyone who wants to hear it.

Last updated May 2024 (added links to news articles about PimEyes being used to identify someone in real life)

Switch to Firefox for your main browser on Windows and Android

Avoid any browser based on the Chromium project (like Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome), as Google has a major conflict of interest that prevents it from truly having users' privacy interests at heart. It makes ~70-80% of its revenue from its highly targeted advertising business, for which it must collect as much information about you as possible. That means that no matter how badly certain parts of Google want to build privacy into the browser, business interests and pressure will always supersede them, or at least force a compromise that still enables some tracking. Firefox is owned and maintained by a non-profit, so it does not have that same conflict, and it shows in the features it builds (and does not build) and the way it treats its users.

I made a list of my favorite Firefox extensions if you want to make your internet experience more pleasant and/or more secure!

Note: on iOS (i.e. iPhones), Firefox' functionality is limited by Apple restrictions and I do not recommend it - using Safari with Extensions like Adguard or 1Blocker is more secure and will give you a better experience. I made a list of my favorite iOS Safari extensions too!

Use a reputable password manager

I suggest 1Password (avoid LastPass and all of the password managers built into browsers, they're not safe). A good password manager increases your online safety by:

Helping you avoid password reuse (a common cause of account hacking)

Generating complex passwords that are difficult to guess or brute-force, and

Allowing you to keep records of all the different sites you have accounts on (so you can quickly change passwords in the event of a breach or delete your accounts on them when they outlive their usefulness)

Delete old accounts you no longer need

If your data has been deleted, no one can steal and leak it if they manage to hack the company.

Sign up for alerts from HaveIBeenPwned (HIBP) to be notified when your data is leaked in a site hacking.

This allows you to quickly change your password, hopefully before anyone is able to decrypt it (if it wasn't stored properly) or use it (if it was easy to guess). If you have reused that password on other sites, be sure to change your password on those sites either.

Note that some leaks don’t actually have any info about what website they were stolen from; if criminals just dump a huge text file onto a hacking forum that has your username and an accompanying password in it, HIBP doesn’t necessarily know what site they hacked to get that info. This is where a password manager like 1Password will come in handy, because 1P can actually use HIBP’s API to check each of your passwords and see if any of them have been leaked before. It will alert you if you need to change a specific password, even if you weren’t aware that site had been hacked.

Note: 1P only sends the first 5 characters of the password hashes to HIBP, not the passwords themselves. You can read more about the feature and how it preserves your privacy here.

Assume all profile pictures on any site are public, and avoid using your face for them if possible

New AI-powered sites like PimEyes can take an image of you, identify your face, and search for it in other, unrelated images around the internet. I searched for myself using a recent image that had never been posted to the internet before, and it immediately identified me in completely separate images I was using as my profile pictures on Facebook and LinkedIn and provided links to my accounts there. In this new AI era, assume anyone who snaps a picture of you can link you to your identity on any website where you have publicly posted your face before. This is not hyperbole; fans used PimEyes to identify a cameraman at a Taylor Swift concert using nothing more than a screenshot of a video taken of him by a concertgoer. Note: for what it's worth, you can submit an opt-out request to PimEyes if you are worried about someone using it to find your accounts online, but it requires you to submit images of your face and your government ID to the company...

Never post the same (original) image on two accounts that you do want to keep separate

Even a simple reverse image search can allow someone to link your different sites together (i.e. don't post the same vacation sunset photo on both Facebook and Tumblr because anyone can use that to link those sites together. Even if your Facebook or Instagram images are private, a follower of yours on one of those sites could still find the Tumblr you are not comfortable sharing with anyone. Marking your Tumblr as hidden only discourages search engines from indexing it; shady companies can and will ignore that and index it anyway.

LENORE!!!! everyone say thank you red … again…

Lenore Caester is the general branch manager of the Verus Technologies Corp, the company behind the Safe Haven Project🙏 She commonly speaks in the royal we. She appears and disappears at the blink of an eye if you’re not actively looking at her. She’s got the kind of voice and diction you’d find in advertisements. (If u wanna get super specific her current voice claim is the fax machine in dhmis s2 ep1.)

In classic VTCO fashion she denies time (the concept).

In one of my first artworks of Lenore ever (the old ones….) she’s holding a pen with a butterfly charm! In my last reference sheet of Lenore it only has one wing. The full butterfly is usually used to symbolize the actual CEO, while the single wing is for SUGAR (the CEO).

Lenore “adopts” Axl after the finale of genesis part 2. Axl runs into Lenore in the elevator and shes like “Hey You wanna go to school?” n hes like. omg yay. school⁉️⁉️⁉️

Lenore is like an android of sorts! She’s either a dead woman put back together or simply based on a woman previously alive. She either doesn’t remember or simply no longer feels attached to anything regarding her “past life” or “identity”. To stay true to her detachment from her past I likely won’t write her origins/mention it.

She’s shown to possess a lot of admiration for the actual CEO and speaks very highly of her.

Lenore isn’t super fond of most of the characters around her relevance level in the story. Main one being Edgar Reynaud! Obv. She doesn’t like him much. She also has a negative relationship with Azimuth! Azimuth has more of an upper hand there as their source of tension is Az’s unwillingness to cooperate. This leads to her getting dragged to mundane activities and hangouts with Az that she has to sit through in the hopes that he comes around eventually. Neither Lenore or Az are open about it when they dislike someone! So while they r both aware that the other person doesn’t like them either, from a 3rd person view they have a fun dynamic i think ^_^ Lenore is generally passive aggressive in a very artificially warm corporate way, while Az likes to fashion his distaste as something more flattering… so hes VERY nice. Hes very nice about it ^_^

Lenore’s dynamic with Morgaine is also interesting to me! It’s quite common for Morgaine to be the person getting the short end of the stick. I feel like she’s always the character who simply doesn’t know background information characters around her know. I feel like it’s a very cruel way to put it but she does end up being the laughingstock very frequently… n it’s not really her fault that this happens. This kind of continues with Lenore. Lenore is her boss. But also not really, because she never actually signs a contract to work with the company. There’s stuff Morgaine confines in Lenore, simply because she has to talk to SOMEBODY and theres not a lot of options. Ok apologies for the morgaine rant i love morgaine can u tell shes one of my favorite characters lmao . She’s still an outsider in the new world that’s been established. For many reasons. It’s kind of when you learn how a magic trick works and it just ruins the magic for you. She was there when a good chunk of the new world was being built, and she knows enough of it is false to be able to ignore it and live a “normal” life. Her normalcy isn’t whatever this is. Therefore she has to confine in people who are also outside this “normalcy”. Lenore is a good candidate for this very reason. For Morgaine, Lenore is the closest thing she can get to talking with a real person who’s also not going to invalidate every second thing she says. Lenore is semi-aware of this. She’s also aware of how horrified Morgaine was to learn the guy she thought she murdered was actually a robot. N there’s a little humor in it for Lenore. Because she’s also a robot.

On a less lore related note, I initially designed Lenore based on a random oc generator prompt thing i got from a website bc I was bored 🤧

Lenore also briefly shows up in a prequel story titled UO! She accompanies Una Hearthelow (creator of The quantum computer / edgar) to a vcto owned skyscraper.

If you remember The Umbrella ™ cycle, Lenore holds an umbrella over Morgaine at the finale of World’s End.

More character design details wise… She’s blue! Obviously because she’s a textbook #BC (aspect type). But she also has some pinks. Who are the pinks associated with? The CEO!!!!! Yippeee!!!! She also has very organic shapes throughout her design, with her dress somewhat resembling waves or water. These are also stuff associated with the actual CEO. She does have my statement square/rectangle shaped irises I give most of my robot-ai-any sorta techy characters! (It’s mostly a stylistic choice, her eyes likely just look. “normal” to everyone else) Her pupils are the 2 triangle hourglass-like shape that’s the vtco logo! Her eyes are a more purple color, i think mainly bc i just like it that way. But u could read into it with knowledge of what purple is associated with in my character designs/worldbuilding.

Chase stared at the computer in his lap. At the screen of code he's been agonizing over for who knows how long. The program wasn't working. It definitely should be, he's gone over the code four times trying to find whatever error he missed but it's yielding nothing but increased frustration when he tests it and nothing happens.

The only option he really has is to restart. But this is hours of work-- hours of slaving over this stupid little laptop that he'd lose because of what's probably one line of code he missed and can't find. He hates restarting, loathes losing hours of progress on a 'first draft.' 

A hand lands on his shoulder, one that's hard and identifiable as Marcus based purely on the fact it's made mostly out of metal. Despite this, his synthetic skin burns against Chase-- which, of course, isn't possible unless he developed a new bionic ability and decided to turn on him-- again-- but chances are pretty low that that's happened.

(Again.)

Still, he shrugs off the hand, turning back to look at the android with wide eyes. Marcus stares back at him with a blank expression, one he wears more often than not now that he's stopped putting up a facade of human emotional responses. "When's the last time he slept?"

Chase just turns back around. He doesn't need this right now, he needs to finish this project. He said he could finish it in a few hours, and it's already well beyond that mark. This program could help take a massive load off Adam, Leo and Marcus until other locations are finished and more mission overseers can be promoted. Hell, it'll even help after that happens.

He scrolls back to the top of the project, trying to scan the code- just one more time- but finds himself squinting beyond diagrams, theories, digital post-it notes and warnings on his information hud. He can barely read any of the letters, numbers and symbols that were supposed to create something helpful but sit there like a useless pile of junk.

Chase swings the mouse over to the New Project button near the top, the sound of plastic on the countertop a grating swoosh of agony that's so much louder than it ever had any right to be.

(Why didn't Douglas give him an on/off switch for his bionics?)

He ground his teeth, a habit that he'd been doing since before he started highschool and one day is going to cost him his teeth. "Dude," Marcus starts, his voice like a freight train in Chase's ear-- it's enough to make him flinch, so the next thing Marcus says he, evidently, turns the volume down so low you wouldn't be able to hear it unless you took his voice box out and put your ear right up next to it, "How long have you been out here?"

Chase continues to glare at the code, another thing popping up on his HUD. The time. 2:32. He'd been working on this for nearly twelve hours.

(Teach him to think "Oh, one more hour can't hurt." Really, he should've learned that six years ago. Probably longer.)

His hands falter, and he pulls them away from the computer enough to notice how much he's shaking, the trembling through his entire body that feels like low-blood sugar and a panic attack had a baby.

(Ew.)

Without the mouse in his hand and the keyboard underneath his fingers, grounding him to the real world and giving him something to focus on, he's overcome with the sudden urge to bang his head on the counter he's working on. Again, this would yield little no results other than pain, and he's overwhelmed enough as it is.

Instead, he reaches his shaking hands up to run through his hair, only to catch the strands in his hand and yank. His scalp burns where he pulls hairs out completely, but he can't bring himself to stop, slowly dragging his still-gripped mess of semi-gelled hair until his slimy hands cover his eyes and he wants nothing more than to be drowned in a vat of acid to get rid of the feeling.

But there are no vats of acid for him to drown himself in, so instead he finds himself standing from the desk with little more than the thought of getting away from the danger of his own senses. Then, he’s standing in the medbay.

The lights are off, and with Douglas gone to the Elite Force and nobody actively injured, it’s empty. Marcus has evidently followed him, something he didn’t notice in the walk in his panic to get out.

His shoes squeak when he tries to rock onto the balls of his feet, a screaming sound that genuinely brings up warning on his HUD. His hands find their way to his arms, too-long nails digging into them. Without the focus of his computer or the code in front of him, all he wants to do is scream and hit things– anything, something to distract from the sensory overload that makes his very skin feel horrible.

Marcus grabs him when his hand first makes contact with his shoulder, solid arms wrapped around him and burying his face in unscented clothes. He squirms, and eventually he finds himself sinking to the floor with Marcus still wrapped around him. His throat burns and his hands hurt, and he doesn’t have the foggiest idea why.

His face is wet, and a sound he can’t identify with his bionics working overtime makes him drag his throbbing hands to his ears. His throat burns, like he got rugburn on his vocal cords. His head hits solid metal, but it doesn’t make the feelings go away. Abruptly, he realizes he’s screaming. The realization makes him snap his mouth shut, carelessly clacking his teeth together so his brain rattles and his jaw aches. A whimper follows and his squirming reignites until Marcus tightens the arms wrapped around him.

He slumps, a broken sob raking along his strained throat. The fight suddenly leaking out of him so he’s just laying against his brother, crying. He feels pathetic, suddenly. Useless– freaking out over a program that would take only a few hours to rewrite.

He opens his mouth to apologize, but all that comes out is a breath of hot air. Above him, he hears things whirr when Marcus activates his voice box and fan, “It’s alright.”

His volume is still low, though it doesn’t grate any more than it would’ve three hours ago. The fan whirring to life makes his chest rumble slightly, a layer of surprisingly calming sensory input that makes Chase wish he hadn’t already slumped so he could simply melt away the tension still writhing in his muscles.

“I know how it is, don’t worry about it,” Marcus continues, chest mimicking the way it’s supposed to move when a human talks, “We can stay here as long as you need.”

One good thing about Marcus being an android: he doesn’t really get bored easily. He really could sit here with Chase for the next few hours with plenty to entertain him, having full access to the internet. He once told them that he could bring up games on his HUD– something Chase is forever jealous about.

However long they lay there, with Marcus positively compressing his brother, it’s long enough for Chase to doze off into a dreamless sleep, where Marcus picks him up and deposits him on the couch in the mentors quarters and settles in on the chair to watch tv until he wakes up.

I don't want to reply to this on the post it's on, because it'd be getting pretty far away from the original point (that being that chromebooks have actively eroded the technological literacy of large proportions of young people, especially in the US), but I felt enough of a need to respond to these points to make my own post.

Point 1 is... pretty much correct in the context that it's replying to; the Google Problem in this case being the societal impact of Google as a company and how their corporate decisions have shaped the current technological landscape (again, especially in the US). I'd argue it's less like saying Firefox is a good alternative for your dishwasher and more like saying Firefox is a solution for climate change, but whatever, the point's the same. You can't personal choices your way out of systemic issues.

Point 2 is only correct in the most pedantic way; we both know that 'running on a Linux kernel' isn't what we mean when we talk about Linux systems. It's one true definition, but not a functional or useful one. Android and ChromeOS (and to a lesser extent, MacOS, and to an even greater extent, the fucking NES Mini) all share a particular set of characteristics that run counter to the vast majority of FOSS and even Enterprise Linux distributions. Particularly, they're a.) bundled with their hardware, b.) range from mildly annoying to damn near impossible (as well as TOS-breaking) to modify or remove from said hardware, and c.) contain built-in access restrictions that prevent the user from running arbitrary Linux programs. I would consider these systems to all be Linux-derived, but their design philosophies and end goals are fundamentally different from what we usually mean when we talk about 'a Linux system'. Conflating the two is rhetorically counterproductive when you fucking know what we mean.

Point 3 is a significant pet peeve of mine, and the primary reason why I feel the need to actually respond to this even if only on my own blog. "Linux is not a consumer operating system" is such a common refrain, it's practically a meme; yet, I've never seen someone explain why they think that in a way that wasn't based on a 30-year-old conception of what Linux is and does. If you pick up Linux Mint or Ubuntu or, I don't know, KDE Plasma or something, the learning curve for the vast majority of things the average user needs to do is nearly identical to what it would be on Windows. Office software is the same. Media players is the same. Files and folders is the same. Web browsers is the same. GIMP's a little finicky compared to Photoshop but it also didn't cost you anything and there are further alternatives if you look for them. There are a few differences in terms of interface, but if you're choosing between either one to learn for the first time you're using a computer, the difference isn't that large. Granted, you can also do a bunch of stuff with the command line - you could say the same of Powershell, though, and you don't have to use either for most things. Hell, in some respects Windows has been playing catch-up - the Windows Store post-dates graphical software browsers on Linux by at least a decade, maybe more. Finding and installing programs has, quite literally, never been harder on Linux than on Windows - and only recently has Windows caught up. I used Linux as my daily driver for five years before I ever regularly had to open up the terminal (and even then it was only because I started learning Python). I was also seven when I started. If the average teenager these days has worse computer literacy than little seven year old Cam Cade (who had, let me think, just about none to start with), I think we have bigger issues to worry about.

In my opinion, Linux users saying Linux 'isn't for consumers' is an elitist, condescending attitude that's not reflective of the actual experience of using a Linux system. To say so also devalues and trivializes the work put in to projects like Mint and Ubuntu, which are explicitly intended to be seamlessly usable for the vast majority of day-to-day computer tasks.
