The proportion of babies born with a congenital heart abnormality increased by 16 per cent after the first year of the pandemic, according to research at City St George's, University of London and published today in Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Heart defects are the most common type of anomaly that develop before a baby is born, with around 13 babies diagnosed with a congenital heart condition every day in the UK and impacting one in 110 births globally . These include defects to the baby's heart valves, the major blood vessels in and around the heart, and the development of holes in the heart.

In over 18 million births, researchers analysed data from US birth certificates from the Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) between December 2016 and November 2022 to evaluate the effect of the pandemic on the number of babies born with a congenital heart defect.

They compared the number of babies born with a congenital heart condition every month before the Covid-19 pandemic (1st December 2016 to 30th November 2019) with those during the pandemic (1st December 2020 to 30th November 2022).

This data was then compared to the number of babies born with Down's Syndrome - a genetic condition not affected by the virus. This was to help ascertain if any differences observed might have been due to Covid-19, or if they were a result of other factors including limited access to antenatal services during the pandemic.

A total of 11,010,764 births before and 7,060,626 births during the pandemic were analysed. Data was adjusted to account for mother's BMI, diabetes and blood pressure before pregnancy, age, number of times they had given birth and the season in which prenatal care started.

The number of births with a congenital heart condition increased by 16% after the first year of the pandemic, with 65.4 cases per 100,000 live births compared to 56.5 per 100,000 births in the period studied before the pandemic.

The number of babies born with Down Syndrome did not change for the duration of the study, suggesting that the increase in fetal heart defects were not due to a disruption of health services.

Studying this large US dataset has revealed an unexpected picture for how the pandemic has affected the hearts of unborn babies, but we need to untangle the reasons for this link. We need to determine if the SARS-CoV-2 virus directly causes the development of fetal heart problems during pregnancy, and if so, how the virus makes these changes in the heart.

We don't have this type of data set available in the UK, but it's important to see if this pattern is seen in other parts of the world.

Covid-19 is still circulating and is easier to catch in the winter months. These results act as an important reminder for pregnant women to get their Covid-19 vaccinations to help protect themselves and their baby."

(I've talked about Drift fucking crystals before right? Like there's no way that I haven't at least once right?)

How it all starts, of course, is with Rodimus making dirty jokes about some of the more... suspiciously shaped crystals in his collections, which Drift scolds him for. None of his crystals would be used like that! It's disrespectful!

Drift definitely doesn't spend the next couple of weeks staring at the ceiling of his room, furiously jacking off, while carefully avoiding looking at his collection. Or even thinking about it. Absolutely not. (Damn it, Rodimus)

So when he's next at an alien market and perusing the crystals and gemstones section, he definitely has no ulterior motive for buying an absurdly large harmonic quartz suspiciously cut and polished into the shape of a textured spike. Complete coincidence. (Listen, it was a really high-quality quartz for dirt cheap, he had to take that deal, ignore his bank account numbers)

And Drift is simply making a smart and tactical decision when he hides it in his subspace until he gets back to his room. Rodimus would probably never shut up about it, and maybe even steal it to try and do... lewd... acts with it! Truly, he is just looking out for the safety and dignity of all involved. Minimus would be proud

It's just... curiosity, that makes him take out the new quartz before he starts... "tending to himself," so he can compare it to his spike... only to see if it actually is that phallic!

The harmonic quartz is certainly pretty, shimmering with many vibrant colors. And large. And thick. And at the base of the center pillar, there are still some small crystalline formations, lovely and polished to a shine, but decently sharp enough to make you want to keep them away from anything... sensitive

A healthy dose of self-delusion really can't cover for the fact that once Drift realizes the crystal is so generously proportioned that it's nearly twice as big as his spike, his valve starts dripping. Any internal justifications of "academic interest" or "morbid curiosity" can't cover for the way he's now rubbing the blunt tip of the quartz across his glowing node and flushed valve folds

And, all right... maybe... he's been thinking about this more than he should. Maybe, getting it out of his system would make him stop. Maybe putting that blunt, unyielding crystal into his valve won't feel good at all, and he won't lie awake thinking about it anymore, so he should just put it in and be done with it-

Drift's loud moan shatters both the silence of his room and his hopes of not enjoying this, as he forces the massive crystal past the first caliper of his valve. It's somehow nothing like a spike, and yet better, his valve desperately clenching around the too-large quartz. The burn of his first caliper squeezing down on its unyielding, solid mass is exquisite. (It's possible there are some other things he has been avoiding admitting to himself, every time an injury made him revved up with charge that he did his best to ignore)

And, well. Maybe once Drift's collected himself, he ends up staring at the ceiling again, thinking about the empty ache in the rest of his valve, and the sunk cost fallacy, and how the rest of the crystal might feel if this is just the tip, and the merits of literally just saying "fuck it."

So he does. Fuck it, I mean. Vigorously, with great enthusiasm and some mild self-injury. His needy little valve was designed take the softer living metal of a spike, or something similar. The hard quartz he's forcing his valve open with is nothing like that at all. The sweet thrill of pain lights up his array with more charge than he ever really wants to self-reflect on

If Drift could even hear himself right now, he'd probably be embarrassed by the noises he's making. The aching burn of each new caliper he harshly pushes through has him moaning like a virgin taking their first spike. But he's too distracted by how fragging full he feels, one hand brutally pistoning the quartz into his abused valve, the other furiously rubbing circles on his anterior node

Fragging hell, when he finally manages to force the whole thing inside of him and grind the fat, blunt tip into his ceiling node, he shrieks like he's being fragging murdered, and accidentally overloads himself into unconsciousness

As Drift wakes up the next morning, still aching around the crystal he didn’t have the chance to pull out, valve lips scratched and bleeding from the rough edges at the base of his new favorite false spike, he looks at the ceiling and thinks: maybe I should start a new crystal collection...

(and, oh primus, if I get an infection from this, no one is ever going to let me live it down)

Commission for @pikablob of her sentient fictional Underrail steam locomotive, 2956 Dreadnought. It uses compound expansion of steam, with boiler pressure steam entering the external cylinders and driving the rear drive wheel, then exhausting into the low pressure cylinder under the smokebox, where it drives the front drive wheel. Note that the two wheels are not coupled together, making this a 2-2-2-0, and due to its two reversers, it has the dubious honor of being capable of wheelslipping in two directions at the same time.

She turned in time to see a new shape burst out from under the island’s shadow, a shiny blur of polished brass and whirring rods, gunning gamely for the yard’s throat.

It was a smaller engine than the first, painted in neat polished black with red and white lining. The cylinders were small and boxy, set behind the wheels of the leading axle. With each breath from the chimney, a great snort of steam would burst from one of them, or from beneath, between the frames; peering closer, she could see the outline of a massive third piston-housing under the smokebox, half-hidden by pilot beam and cowcatcher.

Neat valances covered two sets of large driving wheels, the rear one eclipsed by the cab side-walls, while a complicated set of polished steel rods whirled below. And above, on the leading wheel-arch, polished to the same brassy sheen as whistle, bell, and safety-valves, was a gracefully-curved nameplate:

Dreadnought.

What this is all describing is an LNWR Dreadnought-class 2-2-2-0 Webb Compound. One of these (No. 1320) was actually exported to the Pennsylvania Railroad in the U.S. and ‘Americanized’. The fictional Dreadnought will have been through a similar process.

Dreadnought is sapient, with a "Coal Heart" in her firebox which acts as the mind and main power source for the loco (though she still consumes coal).

The first iteration of my sketch of Dreadnought, from the evening of June 1st. Pretty rough--a lot of the proportions hadn't been figured out quite yet.

The next morning at around 10:30 AM, I began work again.

She briefly had a more american outline boiler, but I got rid of it.

Even after a lot of tweaking, the proportions still didn't look right. It turned out that the spacing between the drivers was totally wrong.

After much surgery--cutting up the boiler, moving the wheels, and stitching the lines back together--the locomotive was looking a lot more authentic.

The sketch was finished by 1:42 PM.

By 3:40, the locomotive and tender bodies were clean lined.

I was running out of time before a meeting as I was putting the wheels on.

The Joy Valve Gear turned out to be really easy to draw, almost disappointingly so.

Joy Valve Gear takes the valve timing from the connecting rod, rather than the drive wheel or axle.

So at 5:00, before I left for my meeting, this was the state of the drawing.

and, um, I also may have sketched it with pencil during the meeting...

I didn't draw any more that night, but at 9:50 AM this morning, I got back to work.

The tender trucks are off of NYC 999, which have this really weird suspension with those inverted leaf springs. The tender is also a little longer to accomodate.

At 10:15 AM, the clean line art was finished:

Coloring then took until about 1:00 PM. There's a lot of very fine line work and there's only so many shortcuts that can be taken. The livery is based on the LNWR lined black (which is extremely similar to BR Black), but with the white wall tires off of NYC 999 (since the tender trucks looked wrong without them and the loco looked wrong with them on just the tender). There's also a white roof, just because.

The shading was done with black for the shadows, and cool grey for the highlights. British steam engines were usually kept pretty shiny anyway, but this locomotive is kept in very good condition by its owner

the full drawing (shown in the OP) was finished at 2:43 PM. But I also made some variants, like the transparency shown above, the solid color version that's brightened for a white/transparent background. (also shown above), and the following:

Overall this was a great commission and I had a lot of fun on it, just like Featherfoot. Probably put too much detail into it.

May I ask specifically for Soundwave doing it to Shockwave?

Oh ho ho let's get that HOLE real talk this thought got away from me a bit so there's some finger sucking and ass play under the cut. That includes fingers, spike, AND rimming bby. Oh yeah and I'm inserting my nullified Shockwave hc in here too but it's nothing explicit, bruv just has no cock or puss. This also escalated into overloading untouched so enjoy!

I think Shockwave should have a thing for Soundwave's face under the mask. Maybe it's jealousy, maybe it's remembering his own face, maybe it's just the fact that Soundwave undoubtedly has some *luscious* dick sucking lips. Whatever it is, once Shockwave convinces him to take off the face mask the full horny comes out.

Brushing his thumb over Soundwave's soft bottom lip, pressing down and watching the protomesh give beneath him. Unlike Shocks, Sounders is pretty expressive beneath the mask. His expression screws up with a pout, he bites the inside of his cheek or the tip of his glossa. Shockwave hates (loves??) it. Soundwave's lips part and Shockwave takes the opportunity to savor the delightful wet warmth around his digits. He tries to picture biolights seated in the joints, protomesh instead of hard metal.

Empurata took more than just his face and his hands, and despite Lord Megatron's generosity (in equal proportion to your use), there were limits. No amount of donor parts would ever feel like his, and so Shockwave had to settle for using the one part of his that handed been destroyed by the Senate.

And Soundwave, despite his reputation for being quiet, knew how to use his tongue.

Soundwave's servos hold his thighs, drawing musical notations across the outside of one as the other slides up and presses along either side of Shocks' aft port. If he focuses, Shockwave can almost feel the pulse of arousal deep in the pit of his belly, right behind his permanently sealed valve cover and spike housing. Nothing was there. Nothing. Just empty slots where they once were. The blue boombox hums-- a rich sound without the mask synthesizer-- and a warm, humid breath brushes along his hole. Quickly followed by the swipe of a glossa, so brief it sends a shiver through his systems that not even shadowplay can supress.

"Stop stalling." He drones, gripping the edge of the table he laid belly-down upon with his good servo.

There was an electric buzz that haunted the air for a moment, the tell-tale sign of Soundwave trying to probe his mind and field. But shadowplay renders the field deaf and the vocalizer numb. He settles instead for pressing his glossa tighter to the iris of synthetic muscle and dutifully working at it.

Shockwave's body doesn't react to the ripples of liquid sin Sound's tongue pours over his sensory net, but he feels them still. Soundwave at least doesn't seem to mind a quiet lover. He loses himself to the moment, probably listening to music within his own mind as his tongue and lips work the purple mech open. Soon fingers join the fray and Shockwave's systems start to throw heat through his vents, hot enough to steam the air and make condensation sit on his plating.

Sounders pulls away, but not without leaving a long trail of solvent dripping down from his port all over the inside of his thighs. Shockwave's hole twitches, and Soundwave just leans in and swirls his tongue over the flushed protometal like it's the sweetest, filthiest treat.

"Stop stalling." Shockwave says again, his vocalizer clipped and his whining vents speaking more for his need. He can't overload from this, but it was close enough.

It takes an utterly embarrassing amount of energy to pull his pedes up beneath him, but he bows his back and tries to turn his helm to look over his shoulder.

He says it again, "Stop stalling." But Soundwave knows he means "Please frag me."

It is a logical enough conclusion.

So Soundwave hums again and takes the purple mech by the hips. There's a shoop-whiiiiiir of his plating retracting, then hefty weight of Sounder's spike sitting so enticingly plapping against his throbbing entrance.

"Stop stall--!?"

And then Soundwave lines himself up, and shoves himself to the hilt in one fell swoop. He's searingly hot, thicker than even Shockwave's digits, and he feels so good.

The quietest huffs escape his vents and Soundwave doesn't wait for him to adjust, he knows how loved and knows he likes it rough. Fingers slide up around his throat, not quite squeezing but it still takes Shockwave aback when the blue mech pulls him up off his front. Pulling his body taut against him, and Shockwave swears he can feel the boombox's massive spike pressing a bulge out against his abdomen.

"Query: Shockwave, cannot overload?"

If he's had a mouth Shockwave was certain he'd be beyond words. The lips in the side of his helm, brushing his audials, makes him shake minutely.

"Affirmative."

"Soundwave: Has an idea."

Before Shockwave can even question him, there's another click. His hand slides up to hold Soundwave's forearm, calculations running in the back of his processor for what the boombox could possibly be thinking. But his answer comes not as words but, vibration.

Soundwave's spike starts vibrating with such sudden, deep haste that Shockwave actually does gasp. It ruins him from his pedes to his processor, so deep he can feel it in his fuel pump. And with a shout his aft quivers around Soundwave, white blinding his vision and then spurts of thick, pink transfluid dumping into his chute. Never before had Shockwave felt so loose, wet, and properly used. His pedes give out, his optic flashes, and electricity crackles all along his body as his first overload in millions of years wrecked his body.

Constructicprowl but Prowl doesn’t understand how the gestalt bond works at first and so fails to hide how utterly aroused he gets when the others mech-handle, overpower, or generally dominate him. He’s sooo embarrassed by how everyone can tell just how good he feels, the heat increasing, no matter how much he scowls and shouts. In public, Prowl’s the boss. He decides what they’re doing, when, where, and sometimes even how. The mech’s a strategist and moving people around to fill needs and suit talents is his literal job. Once they’re behind closed doors, however…

The Constructicons like working the brattiness out of their boss the good old fashioned way: enough overloads to melt that sharp mind into a puddle. And Prowl is both deliciously powerless to stop them and embarrassingly eager to let it happen. He *loves* to be moved around like his input doesn’t matter, passed from mech to mech like a needy doll. Constantly full of spike, clinging to whoever’s carrying him around as they wear him like an accessory. They love fucking his wet, eager valve. And especially the noises it drags out of Prowl, squeaks and groans of pleasure as he’s jolted by another thrust.

One of their favorite games in spearing him on Long Haul’s spike and spreading his legs. Petting at his spike housing until it irises open for them to play with. They like teasing it with their fingers, cooing over how cute and small it is while Prowl tries to argue that it’s proportional or kick them away. Faceplates burning as he swears and snaps, each wriggle and kick only serving to remind him just how helpless and full of spike he is. They all know he doesn’t *really* mean it, not when Prowl’s clearly drowning in arousal on his end of the bond. Still, someone usually fucks his throat so he can’t get himself into even more trouble.

And all Prowl can do is take it, moaning and overloading as they take turns stroking and flicking his spike with their fingers. A cute little spike for their cute little boss. Just a toy to play with, utterly useless for fucking when his gestalt is so much bigger than him. Bonecrusher might let him try, just so they can laugh at Prowl’s attempt. It’s fine though, when he’s been reduced to angry tears and rutting they’ll pet and fuss over him when Bonecrusher bends him in half to show him how a “real” spike feels. And Prowl will be begging for more in no time, spike drooling petulantly against his belly.

At this point it’s not a matter of if Prowl gets pregnant but when. He still hasn’t figured out how to keep the gestalt bond closed.

Hearing him speak made me imagine a Tarzan or Mowgli from The Jungle Book type character, so I saw this wildman. Though, somewhere down the line, I thought, "Hmmm... ...cat...". Heh.

Ironically, the reference I used for him crawling on all fours was the Hunter from Left 4 Dead. I wanted to keep natural human proportions but not make it look awkward. I have mixed feelings about Valve as a company nowadays (extremely mixed, in fact), but they do produce quality stuff once in a blue moon.

By the first month he had decided to forgo his abdominal plating, showing off the goods. He had been chastised at first but as his belly grew, he received more gaping stares than scoldings. Even Soundwave was prone to losing himself while working when Blitzwing sauntered by.

Halfway through, Blitzwing demanded sex almost constantly. Soundwave could hardly keep up. Eventually he’d grab Blitzwing with his tentacles and fuck his leaky valve while working- not that he was getting much done with such a spectacle next to him, but still, it’s the thought that counts.

Near the end, Blitzwing was like a whiny cat. He was bed bound at that point due to the eggs (or Knockout just liked seeing his new favorite patient be helpless), so he relied heavily on Soundwave. Icy whimpered for physical affection, Hothead snarled and demanded his craved food, while Random made noise just for the sake of getting his partner’s attention.

Soundwave wasn't bothered. He enjoyed seeing his lover like this, his protomesh swollen and spilling out. The rest of Blitzwing’s body had proportioned itself as well- he abandoned his chassis piece as soon as he started staying in bed, letting his new swollen breasts hang out. Sometimes Soundwave came home to find Blitzwing leaking bright cyan energon-rich milk everywhere, his valve and spike soon following suit with cobalt lubricating oils.

They spent many nights curled up together on their shared berth, Soundwave massaging Blitzwing’s fat in any way possible. Soundwave made a reassuring chitter when Blitzwing whimpered, then slowly opened up his plating to see his heavy, leaking valve.

To their surprise, the first egg was already almost there. With a simple push, it plopped out onto the soft bedding.

Random’s face chattered excitedly. “Look! That one would be good hard-boiled.”

Soundwave made a disapproving noise and a tentacle lightly smacked the back of his helm.

Icy spoke next. “Ah… good thing they're not fertilized…” He grunted and pushed the second egg out, a spurt of fluid soaking his thighs.

Soundwave was unusually “talkative”, making all sorts of noises to encourage Blitzwing. Even the stupidest of mechs could see that he was, indeed, actually worried- Blitzwing was in bliss now but there were many things that could go wrong…

The third egg got stuck, resisting several attempts at pushing. Hothead snarled in irritation. “Stupid mech! This is all your fault!” He snapped.

Soundwave wasn't bothered, knowing this was a natural reaction- apparently it was a stereotype for pregnant humans to blame their partners for the pain. But the egg soon popped out thanks to Hothead’s passion and Blitzwing resumed whimpering in pleasure.

The next egg caused Blitzwing to moan wantonly. He couldn't take it anymore- he popped out his halfway inflated spike and began to rapidly stroke himself. He ignored Soundwave’s annoyed huff, fondling one of his own breasts while stroking.

“It feels so good!” he whimpered, his right optic fluttering shut before the faces changed again to Random. “Ooh! I want to lay eggs in you, next, Wavy! We can sound your spike and eggs will fill up those beautiful balls of yours and-”

“Sorry, mein liebe. I believe that will be the first of many, ah, cumshots, as the humans say.” His motions continued, his spike leaking even more dark blue lubricating fluid.

Finally, after a few more of Blitzwing’s overloads and eggs, it was the final stretch. The eleventh egg was crowning when Blitzwing decided to stop pushing and massage his puffy purple valve.

Soundwave rang in annoyance, attempting to swat Blitzwing’s servo away, but Hothead growled at him.

“Hold on. I want to enjoy this!” He grit his teeth and groaned, his hips sputtering. He suddenly squirted everywhere, soaking the already-dampened fabric that lay around them. He let out a high-pitched moan, surprising for the face being displayed. Pure pleasure was resounding throughout his body, through his abdomen and causing his spark to sputter in excitement.

Soundwave took pity on the triplechanger and rubbed his servo digits on Blitzwing’s node. Another spurt of squirt came out when the next egg made it out and plopped onto the wet pile.

It felt like sparks flew through Blitzwing’s body, lighting every nerve on fire. His optics widened and he shouted as the final, thirteenth egg popped out, another overload taking him. He must have had at least half a dozen orgasms by now, Soundwave already calculating how much energon he’d need to retrieve after the affair.
