Divine Majesty and Human Dignity
To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David.
1 How excellent in all the earth, Lord, our Lord, is thy name! Who hast thy glory far advanc’d above the starry frame.
2 From infants’ and from sucklings’ mouth thou didest strength ordain, For thy foes’ cause, that so thou might'st th’ avenging foe restrain.
3 When I look up unto the heav'ns, which thine own fingers fram’d, Unto the moon, and to the stars, which were by thee ordain’d;
4 Then say I, What is man, that he remember’d is by thee? Or what the son of man, that thou so kind to him should'st be?
5 For thou a little lower hast him than the angels made; With glory and with dignity thou crowned hast his head.
6 Of thy hands’ works thou mad'st him lord, all under’s feet didst lay;
7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and beasts that in the field do stray;
8 Fowls of the air, fish of the sea, all that pass through the same.
9 How excellent in all the earth, Lord, our Lord, is thy name! — Psalm 8 | Psalms of David in Metre 1650 (Scottish Psalter) Psalms of David in Metre 1650 © British and Foreign Bible Society 2015. 1 Shaddai, how beautiful You are in all the earth! Your glory shines in the heavens! 2 Little children give witness to Your greatness, and Your adversary is silenced. 3 When I gaze in awe at the vast heavens You made, the moon and the stars which are the work of Your fingers, 4 What are women that You are mindful of them, or their daughters, that You visit them? 5 Yet You have made woman in Your image, and crowned her with glory and honor! 6 You have given her dominion over the works of Your hands. You have put all things in her keeping and care - 7 all sheep and cattle, and the wild beasts of the field and forest, 8 the birds of the air and the creatures of the sea. 9 Shaddai, how beautiful is Your name in all the earth!

When I see your heavens, the works of your fingers, The moon and the stars that you have prepared, What is mortal man that you keep him in mind, And a son of man that you take care of him?

Cuando contemplo tus cielos, obra de tus dedos, la luna y las estrellas que allí fijaste, me pregunto: «¿Qué es el hombre para que en él pienses? ¿Qué es el hijo del hombre para que lo tomes en cuenta?».

James Webb and Vincent van Gogh Merge Science and Faith
James Webb and Vincent van Gogh Merge Science and Faith
Like you my mind and heart tripped over one another when I first saw the miraculous photographs from the James Webb Space Telescope. I felt like Lucy in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe opening a door and peering into another world, vast, beautiful, mysterious, and dangerous. Then I saw one where someone combined Van Gogh’s famous Starry Night with an image from the telescope (the opening…

Daily Service: Wisdom personified
  Listen as Wisdom calls out! Hear as understanding raises her voice! She stands on the hilltop and at the crossroads. Proverbs 8:1-2 The problem with crossroads is that they present choices and require that they be made, and unless you make the right choice you end up being hopelessly lost. It is at the crossroads that we need somebody who, unlike the old man, has a word of wisdom to…

Psalm 8 - A Meditation
"When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,     the moon and the stars that you have established;  what are human beings that you are mindful of them,     mortals[a] that you care for them?"
-Psalm 8:3-4
It feels rare I can appreciate poetry from the Bible because of how often the translation kills the artistic intention.
I don't want to lose the meaning of the feeling by overanalyzing or reading things into it... sometimes poetry can be beautiful and true.

Crowned with Glory and Honor: Sunday Devotion
At the Rodin Museum in Paris, France, May 2023 Psalm 8: 3-5 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit[ him? For You have made him a little lower than [the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. Human beings often underestimate their value and…

PSALMS S.O.A.P. ~ PSALM 8
Monday, 7/31/23
SCRIPTURE:
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,  The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;  What is man that You take thought of him,  And the son of man that You care for him? ~ Psalms 8:3-4
OBSERVATION:
Well... according to Genesis, we were created last... after the moon and stars...
...and in His image...
... and then He sent Jesus on our behalf... despite ourselves...
I s'pose that is the true and awesome mystery of love and grace...
APPLICATION:
Live in constant awe of His love and grace...
PRAYER:
Loving Heavenly Father God; When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,  The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;  I give thanks that You created me in Your image, and forgiveness for the sin in my life that turns me away from You will for my life... May Your Holy Spirit remind me to hold Your grace in the same awe I hold for Your heavens and handiworks, and may I continue to follow Jesus's examples of service to those around me, in service to You... In His Name, and for Your awe-filled praise...
Yours in wonder at His awesome love...

by T. M. Suffield | Son of Man is the bigger and grander title, and we should read it in two ways: one as here in Psalm 8, the Son of Adam, the Serpent-slayer. The other as in Daniel 7, where Daniel extends the promise of the new Adam to show us that he is God come himself. Son of Man, after...

Our Place in the World (Psalm 8)
The psalms address ultimate questions of human existence: Who am I? Why do I exist? What is the purpose of life?
Lord, our Lord,    how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory    in the heavens.Through the praise of children and infants    you have established a stronghold against your enemies,    to silence the foe and the avenger.When I consider your heavens,    the work of your fingers,the moon and the stars,    which you have set in place,what is mankind that you are mindful of…

Considering Psalms 7, Psalm 8
(Image credit – Bible.com) Please read Psalm 8 in preparation for this reflection on what it says. The translation I am using is the Complete Jewish Bible, 1998, David Stern, trans. Psalm 8 is a very dense, compact reflection about the whole order of creation and the reality of the experience of the world we find ourselves enveloped in. It is a “Psalm” of David – a sacred poem-song. The…
