BT-ify Pulp Heroes: Doc Savage (Worldbuilding/Storybuilding)
So, this one is a bit different.
I started profiling Pulp Heroes and their supporting casts, and asked people to come up with BT-ified versions. Well, initially I asked what Mech they would use, but for many, things got very detailed.
Some of these (notably the ones I discussed in the poll months ago) got beyond this, but there are plenty who didn't. So, what I am going to do is start posting what the folks on the forumboard came up with, and see:
What you think of what was come up.
See if y'all have ideas to refine, enhance, or improve what they came up
Come up with ideas for stuff to do with these BT-ized versions of the characters.
And with all that taken care of, let's start with one of the most important, iconic, and archetypical Pulp Heroes...Doc Savage (and his aides)
(profiles via forumposter Starfox05)
Doc:
Doc Savage was project of the Society to produce the ultimate human - the pinnacle of genetic engineering, mating nature and nurture. A genius in a perfect body, raised from birth with all the knowledge available to humanity. Destined to lead the Society to victory. He's as tall as an Elemental, as quick as a 'Mechwarrior. Unfortunately - for the Society - he was so smart and eager to learn, he did study privately in addition to what his tutors taught him, and soon discovered knowledge they were not meant to teach him - amongst them philosophies and teachings abandoned by the Clans long ago. As he was a scientist through and through - questioning everything and never accepting anything on blind faith. So, he saw through the Society's stated aims, realised how wrong they were, and decided to abandon them to help humanity. Having ditched the Clan way for the same reasons, he gathered a few prisoners/experimental subjects he liberated and guards/tutors he turned as well as his young "cousin", a female version of him sharing most of his genes, stole a dropship and jumpship from the society and all the tech and supplies he could manage, and made his way to the Inner Sphere. He can pilot, repair, modify and construct anything - tank, 'Mech, Aerospacefighter, Battle Armour, dropship or jumpship. If he has to fight, he fights to disable, and he likes to switch and customise his ride, usually an Executioner OmniMech he heavily modified, to the task at hand. Unlike most Clan Warriors, he likes melee combat, often using his 'Mech's mass to wreck lighter enemies without harming the pilot, and often uses experimental weapons and even construction tools in any battle as well as the environment. Even though he and his group are nominally mercenaries (and hid their origin once they reached the Periphery) they often work pro bono, relying on selling new technology and Doc's services as a polymath to finance their excursions, in addition to a Germanium Mine he received from a grateful periphery planet's population whose water filters and fusion generators he restored and improved. He has started to acquire a small fleet of merchants whose jumpships and dropship he repaired for them, and who pay him back by a share of their profits. He and his group live on a special dropship, a former Collossus, that he modified into a flying base and research lab.
Ham:
A former Star Colonel who failed to die in battle or earn a bloodname, [Ham] was an eccentric Diamond Shark, keeping both a pet and an antique blade ready during his career. He was targetted by the society for his skill at logistics and was kidnapped when he was transferred to solahma unit so they could pick his brain for military tactics. He has an old rivalry with [Monk] dating back to a few clashes during trials. He pilots a Lancelot, the last 'Mech assigned to him by his Clan.
Monk:
[Monk], another talented warrior who never got a bloodname (though he tried numerous times), and he switched to the scientist caste when he aged out, and was recruited by the Society after starting an affair with one of their members. He soon fell out with the Society's leadership, though hid his true thoughts, and managed to teach Doc not merely science but also a few other tricks and unarmed fighting.
Johnny:
Another of Doc's original tutors, [Johnny] was responsible for most of his scientific training, after suffering the loss of an eye and having trouble with the implant that replaced. He was not very respected in the Society since he didn't specialise but kept "widening his horizons" as he called it - and since he often paid more attention to history and the past as a former Goliath Scorpion than the Society found tolerable.
Long Tom (admission, the entire reason for this series of projects was cuz of him):
[Long Tom} was a Naga-pilot turned bondsman turned tech, and mostly ended up in the Society's hand because they wanted to find out if his peculiar appearance and excellent health could be useful for their experiments. He went along with the others when Doc broke out and has been working on restoring a Long Tom artillery piece they picked up on a border planet (and modifying it so he doesn't need crew to use it).
Renny:
An Elemental working for the Society and serving as a link to the Dark Caste, Renny committed many crimes for which he is ashamed before he had a change of heart helping Doc. If Doc had not convinced him to atone by helping others, he would have killed himself long ago.
Pat:
Patricia was meant to be Doc's counterpart, and she has the skills, smarts and drive to prove it. What she doesn't have is his experience - she is younger than him and still learning, and sometimes a bit too eager for her own good. She pilots a Gargoyle if she takes the field, sporting a prototype rotary autocannon with six barrels.
And as a bonus, the closest thing Doc has to a nemesis...
John Sunlight:
A survivor of the Society, John managed to escape and determined to lead humanity to salvation whether it wants to be saved or not. Armed with the knowledge of his old organisation he plans to rebuild the Star League in his image, so to speak. He blames Doc for abandoning the Society and for wasting his talents helping others instead of leading them as the genetically superior specimen he should, in John's opinion.
So, what thinkest thou, BT and Pulp Fans of Tumblr?

So what are your favorite shadow media (pulps, comics, radio, etc)?
My favorites aren't really a mystery. It's generally listed in my bio / intro post / whatever tf shows up first and that ✨️ recommendations post ✨️
The og pulp magazine run is my main Shadow medium. It's where The Shadow's actual character was created and it's the reason I prefer the pulp. He is literally described as creature, a force of nature. The father of horror and heroes. Just a living black mass, descibed as a living dark tornado. It makes hell noises, it chirps with differing vibrations that pops nerves. A human head with eyes in some descriptions actually creates illumination.
Another big reason is its writing format. This shit actually has me reading. I hate reading. Still very much do that has not changed. This is the one exception because its format is more suited to my needs. Shorter stories + perfect length chapters while having just the right amount of content to not have your brain completely swamped.
The Shadow 1994 was my introduction so there will forever be a bias regardless of quality. Why i love this movie could be it's own post entirely so I'm gonna keep it simple
look at this thing.

Like seriously what is that why is it funny.
I love it more after reading pulps because of the written whiplash you get. Like its the most teenage fanfic shit ever and it's incredible. Very imperfect, does a lot of things wrong, a little cringe but still a fun movie that's ahead of its time. The comic adaptation is also really good (and actually better lmao.)
To be old man yelling at cloud I've not looked too much into comics, at least after 1994. Ignorance / Just too focused on the two things above. In The Coils of Leviathan is my favorite I guess "modern" comic. To quote from my recommends it's the closest thing to newer pulp story down to The Shadow character and story structuring (Shads not being a central figure, him being generally silent until the end where he explains his findings, supernatural fronts etc.) Absolutely incredible artwork, moments that will leave you in awe, a sinister monster, and The Shadow being a mythical badass.
Death of Margo Lane is my favorite modern modern comic that I've read so far. The best portrayal of him going mental that isn't stupid. Matt Wagners art is also really good. Probably my favorite current Shadow artist.

#pulp#the shadow#the shadow magazine#the shadow 1994#the shadow in the coils of leviathan#the shadow the death of margo lane#need to read or reread the comics so this list could get longer#not read the murray doc crossover but id probably love that one#ask me again in a year or two or three

Pulp Fanfic Crossover Fodder: Dr. Goldfoot
Note: This is primarily based on Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine (1965).
Little is known of the background of Dr. Goldfoot. This includes not knowing his full name, if that even is his birth name, and where if anywhere he got his doctorate. He claimed descent from a pirate, a member of the Inquisition, and Attila the Hun's mentor in violence.
As of 1965, he appeared to be physically in his fifties, and had resided for some years in San Francisco operating a private cemetery and funeral home as a front for his other activities. It was in this year that he invented his best-known device, the Bikini Machine. The Bikini Machine created humanoid female-shaped robots with fairly complex programming, allowing them a limited ability to pass as human women. Each came with a gold-fabric bikini; it's not clear if they had actual female anatomy underneath that cloth.
Dr. Goldfoot supplemented the basic programming by downloading data from computer tapes directly to their memory banks. This was used primarily for giving them the ability to speak knowledgably about their targets' areas of interest.
The plan was to have these "girlbots" marry wealthy men, strip them of their assets, and transfer the wealth to Dr. Goldfoot. His goals beyond that are unclear.
Due to poor instructions by Dr. Goldfoot's henchman Igor. girlbot #12 "Diane" mistook Secret Intelligence Command (SIC) agent Craig Gamble for her target, millionaire Todd Armstrong. Craig, a nitwit only employed by SIC because his uncle Donald J. Pevney was the San Francisco office chief, only understood that the bizarre-acting woman he'd instantly fallen in love with had suddenly abandoned him (when Dr. Goldfoot corrected her commands) but this was enough to put him on the case.
Diane "met cute" with Todd and quickly persuaded him to marry her. At no time was the marriage consummated, but it's not clear if this was due to incapacity on #12's part or a part of a strategy to string Todd along until she possessed all his assets. Eventually, Craig and Todd teamed up to "rescue" Diane from Dr. Goldfoot, despite the fact she'd already been reprogrammed to forget she ever met them.
After a number of hijinks and a chase through San Francisco, Dr. Goldfoot and Igor were seemingly killed by naval bombardment. In reality, they survived, and the two men and Diane replaced the flight crew on a passenger jet to France.
By 1966, Dr. Goldfoot had become separated from Igor and Diane (the latter of whom may have married the German man she was flirting with on the plane) and was operating out of Italy. (Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs) He'd accepted Chinese funding to rebuild his Bikini Machine. This new version created "girlbombs" that could impersonate specific people and explode on command.
This time, the plan was to disrupt NATO war games by assassinating the various generals involved. The plan was thwarted by another SIC agent, Bill Dexter, and two Italian doormen named Franco and Ciccio. Dr. Goldfoot then attempted to detonate a nuclear bomb in Moscow to start World War Three, but this also failed and he was believed killed in the explosion. In fact, he survived, but no further activity of his has been recorded.
By the 1990s, Dr. Goldfoot's girlbot technology had been acquired by Virtucorp, the front organization for Dr. Evil, and somewhat improved. (See Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.)
Girlbots are very sturdy, able to take a collision with a small automobile without being moved or taking noticeable damage. They can be pierced by small arms fire, but unless vital areas are specifically targeted, this does not impair their function in any way. They're also far stronger than they appear. (Fortunately, most of Dr. Goldfoot's girlbots were not programmed to use violence.) They have radio receivers which allow them to receive commands directly from a console Dr. Goldfoot also invented.
The first batch of girlbots, including #12, were mostly able to impersonate human women, but came off as eccentric. They relied on their good looks and aggressive courting tactics to distract targets from realizing there was anything odd.
In addition to the Bikini Machine, Dr. Goldfoot's technology included: opera glasses that sprouted poison spikes (never used on camera), laser lipstick, the ability to remotely control motorcars, and either remote viewing or multiple miniature cameras placed throughout San Francisco. The latter two were incorporated into the same console he used to communicate with the girlbots. He had some way of reviving the (recently?) dead, but the only person he is known to have used it on was Igor.
Dr, Goldfoot bore a strong resemblance to the actor Vincent Price. He always wore gold-fabric slippers, and it was implied at one point that his actual feet were also golden in color. He was fey in his mannerisms, although he did seem to appreciate the aesthetics of his Bikini Machine creations. He put little value on human life, and was fully willing for his girlbots to eliminate competition the hard way.
The mad scientist's grasp of geopolitics may have been a little shaky. He sent a girlbot with the appearance of a black woman to marry a person who would have been a white man in South Africa at the height of apartheid.
Crossover potential: A rather silly mad scientist who specializes in creating femi-form robots can have many uses, as long as the story is okay with that kind of humor. Assuming nothing else happens to him, Dr. Goldfoot would die of old age in the early 1990s.
Notably, Dr. Goldfoot's headquarters was not destroyed in the movie, so the U.S. government was presumably able to access his technology and study it. ("Top men.") Also, several girlbots were already out on assignment at the time of his defeat, and are presumably loose ends.
SIC is one of the many splinter intelligence agencies the fictional U.S. government sponsored during this time period to increase plausible deniability. The budget was apparently tiny, with the San Francisco office being headquarters in a two-room office, Craig and his uncle being the only two operatives, and Craig not having access to any spy gadgets or even a gun. (His salary was also miniscule--he considered a cheese sandwich at the cafeteria a suitable date meal.)
The fictional agency your main characters belong to may have absorbed SIC and its records if the story is set post-1966.
Have fun!
@krinsbez

BattleTech/Pulp Heroes Storybuilding: BT-ifying the Gadget Man
The overwhelming majority of you have never heard of this guy, but i read the third and final installment of a collection of all the stories starring him by Lester "creator of Doc Savage" Dent, and I am in love with this character, and I think y'all should be too, and I am BEGGING you to help figure out how to BT-ifiy him, because apparently this is how I show my love for characters now?
Anyways, the profile.
Clickell "Click" Rush is a man of average height, average weight, and seemingly average build (unless you look closely or get his shirt off, at which point you will observe that he has "extraordinary muscular development" of the wiry variety, frequently compared to a circus acrobat) with a face that is neither particularly attractive nor unattractive. He has brown hair, brown eyes, and favors brown in his sartorial choices as much as current fashion allows, to the point that simply wearing a black suit and grey hat can briefly constitute an effective disguise. He is a genius inventor and a two-fisted badass who in addition to physical prowess and martial skill displays a great deal of cunning, resourcefulness, and improvisational skill (i just read a story where he defeats a group of armed sailors in a running fight aboard a large boat or small ship whilst being himself initially unarmed via improvised and found weapons, starting with his own shoes. He has invented "thousands of crime-fighting devices"* and attempted to sell them to the NYPD, who sadly where not only unreceptive, but mocked him in the newspapers; later he ruefully admits they were probably right to do so, as his creations are almost invariably weird and not particularly practical if you aren't him. Salvation form financial ruin came in the form a of a foot-tall, foot-wide, two-foot long paper-mache toad containing a wireless transmitter, which activated produced a disguised voice (note that the method of vocal disguises periodically varies) declaring "My name is Bufa, I eat slugs and snails-of the human variety", and offered to pay Click $10,000 to investigate "unusual crimes" for him. Thus began Click Rush's never-ending torment, as Bufa continues to provide at best tiny amounts of cryptic information and refuses to allow Click to end their association, finding him no matter where he travels to or what disguises or aliases he utilizes, and forcing him to solve said crimes, usually by informing various involved parties (includes sometimes the criminals) that Click is involved, thus forcing the Gadget Man to solve the crimes in self-defense; more than once, Click becames aware he's been "hired" because someone tries to preemptively kill or frame him. All attempts bby Click to find out who Bufa is (so that he can beat the snot out of him) are as futile as his attempts to doge the toad, discovering only various irrelevant trivia, such as the fact that Bufa seems to have unlimited funds (which didn't stop him from demanding that Click turn over to him the $25,000 reward he received from case, and then somehow stealing it without Click's knowledge when Click refused) and a very odd and arguably sadistic sense of humor, which combines weirdly with his apparently sincere desire for justice and a self-admitted physical cowardice. *Notable examples include a a device for tapping phone lines, a portable x-ray machine, bulletproof vests (which didn't quite work), hypodermic syringes full of knockout chemicals "molded in foam rubber" mounted on his elbows that cannot be distinguished from his actual elbows, and a wide assortment of James Bond-esque devices for deploying tear gas, knockout gas, small amounts of explosives, blinding flares, and such like in innocuous objects, as part of his clothing, or discretely on his person.
Any thoughts on BT-ifying this?

Another deisaso drawing I did for sasodei week 2023. Is it just me, or all akatsuki really fits perfectly well into pulp fiction universe. I would love to see some more mafia!au with them in this setting, I think it could be something really fun to watch 🤣🤣
Anyway, two partners in (gay)crime drinking coffee inside of totally not «dead bitch storage» house.
