reblogging again about Big Eden made me think about some of the native american/canadian queer cinema (Indigiqueer Cinema) I've enjoyed.
Found a handy dandy Letterboxd List called Queer Native Pride and Beyond that has a whole bunch of movies I haven't seen yet, and below some of the ones I've gotten to experience (three out of four are linked):
Big Eden: a story about a gay man who returns home, because his grandfather gets sick. A sweet, beautiful man (played by Eric Schweig) starts to secretly make him food to help out. it's an amazing slice-of-life/subtly utopian bit of film-making, in that nobody in the town is homophobic, but being gay/shame is still a big part of the exploration within it.
Wildhood: a movie I got to watch at a film festival (always good to go to your local queer film festivals, many surprises to be had) and it blew me away. a roadtrip movie about two brothers who escape their abusive father to reconnect with the elder's mother and Mi'kmaq heritage. letting go of the instilled shame of being indigenous goes hand in hand with letting go of the instilled shame of being queer
Fancy Dance: this movie isn't about being queer, it's about the ongoing murder of indigenous woman and girls, and it's also a beautiful road trip film between an aunt and her niece, the former of whom is sure her sister is dead but unwilling to face it and to destroy her niece's innocence. Lily Gladstone plays the lead, who's also a lesbian, which is just a choice that works really well for the movie even if it's not the focal point (available on Apple+ TV and however you access movies, but would recommend throwing this one some views if you have access to official streaming)
Honey Moccasin: a 1998 movie i watched at another film festival (this time online), it's anarchic, it's a comedy, it's a thriller, it's got musical beats, it weaves in the intricacies of exploring Native identity and Queer identity, it's a surreal story about a few things, one of which include focus on a "closeted drag queen." it's a movie that beats against conventional film-making to create something not beholden to tropes and clichés forced upon narratives about being Native
#indigiqueer#queer cinema#indigiqueer cinema#big eden is interesting in the sense of wondering where it sits in esteem with native american communities#as it's not made/directed with a focus in mind to represent native american lives so much as the casting of eric schweig was#from the sounds of it very deliberate and He brought a weight to his role that was respected and wanted#but would it be considered indigiqueer by everyone (*everyone* is a weighted term tho also)#i do think it's different to say the miseducation of cameron post which is an ensemble piece that centres a white girl#in which one of the other characters is lakota#anyway i should look up how people talk about big eden#big eden#wildhood#fancy dance#honey moccasin

Ok so june may be ending but I wanted to do something small but still meaningful for this year Pride to remind us that even though the world is kind of going to shit, we are still here, we were always here, and we are not going anywhere.
So this is a list of some of my favourite queer movies that i offer to you🌈✨️🏳️🌈
Midnight Cowboy (1969) - One of my favourites ever, it's so beautiful and complex. It's not a full blown romance like in Brokeback Mountain but it captures the depth of male friendship/realtionship like no other.
Cabaret (1972) - Yes, it's queer and poly! And just a really great and important story like right now...
Dog Day Afternoon (1975) - Based on a real story, which is quite interesting on its own, it's great thriller about man trying to rob a bank in order to pay for his partner's transition. And Al Pacino is amazing!
Paris is Burning (1990) - There's some problematic stuff concerning its production but i still think it's an obligatory watching if you're interested in drag. Its a documentary, all the interviews are with real drag queens and it's both informative of drag history and works fantastic as a story.
Orlando (1992) - Something for our nonbinary, trans and gender fluid friends. Based on Virgina Woolfs novel it explores life of young man (Tilda Swinton) who cursed with immortality, finds himself to be of different gender with the passage of time. Great movie about finding ones identity and unexpectedly funny at times.
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) - A real feel good movie about family and identity and being who you are. Really progresive for its time even though there were no trans actors, the characters are still great and respectful to community, not just a joke.
The Birdcage (1996) - Same as with Priscilla, just a great comfort movie, amazingly funny and with great performances.
Wilde (1997) - Biography of Oscar Wilde, good way to learn about him (and this guy is just amazing) and just a fun movie. Also I'm sorry but Jude Law is insanely hot here.
But I'm a Cheerleader (1999) - lesbian classic, what else to say. If you don't like it we cant be friends.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) - I thought it was a classic but many ppl don't know it? Anyway great musical and really interesting exploration of gender and transness, dealing with stuff like dysphoria.
Tangerine (2015) - Another one of my faves and this one everybody needs to see imo. It's a story about trans sex workers and while majority of the plot deals with drama it also shows the closeness, the trust and love in queer community. It's so bold and original and fun while still remaining moving (Yes, I cry like a baby at the end).
Summer of 85 (2020) - All of the best Call Me by Your Name vibes but without the icky parts.
Down Low (2023) - Not well known but so good, it's a comedy about a middle-aged man embracing and exploring his sexuality for the first time. There aren't many coming out movies about adults so it's interesting to see this perspective. It was really funny but at the same time I did not expect the emotional gut punch at the end.
Bottoms (2023) - we absolutely need more horny gay comedies especially with insane lesbians. Thats that on that.
This Filthy World (2006) - Best at last, I couldn't not put John Waters on this list so I decided on sth you might not know. Its a recording of Waters live show as he talks about his movies and his life. I did not expect it to be so good but it's super funny and crazy and all the stories are so insane they could only happen to Waters himself.
So that's it! I wanted to choose something less known than Brokeback Mountain but still not totally obscure, both older and newer, something for everyone to relate to. Hope you enjoy🏳️🌈

THE LIVING END (1992) dir. Gregg Araki Luke is a restless and reckless drifter and Jon is a relatively timid and pessimistic film critic. Both are gay and HIV positive. After an unconventional meeting, and after Luke kills a homophobic police officer, they go on a road trip with the motto "Fuck everything." (link in title)

My main take away from But Im A Cheerleader right after watching it might be suprising (idk that for sure, since i just wathced it, but ya never know) but... its lowkey a sad and bittersweet story
Like, most of the kids at the camp either quit or are thrown out, which most likely means they have nowhere to go... unless they can find older supportive queers like Megan and Dolph did
The movie ends with the main character getting the girl and runnig away together... While the remaining kids at true directions complete thier "graduation"
The conversion therapy camp isnt destroyed, or overthrown, or discredited - it will probably continue for years or decades after Megan and Graham escape...
BUT
even still, as long as those lucky few kids manage to escape this awful system, it is still a victory, no matter how small in the grand scheme of things it is - even if not everyone could have been saved
