The darkly ironic thing is that if you are worried about the recent news that someone scraped Ao3 for AI research, then you're probably vastly underestimating the scale of the problem. It's way worse than you think.

For the record, a couple of days ago, someone posted a "dataset for AI research" on reddit, which was simply all publicly accessible works on Ao3, downloaded and zipped. This is good, in a way, because that ZIP file is blatantly illegal, and the OTW managed to get it taken down (though it's since been reuploaded elsewhere).

However, the big AI companies, like OpenAI, xAI, Meta and so on, as well as many you've never heard of, all probably had no interest in this ZIP file to begin with. That was only ever of interest to small-scale researchers. These companies probably already have all that data, received by scraping it themselves.

A lot of internet traffic at the moment is just AI companies sucking up whatever they can get. Wikipedia reports that about a third of all visitors are probably AI bots (and they use enormous amounts of bandwidth). A number of sites hosting software source code estimate that more than 90% of all traffic to their sites may be AI bots. It's all a bit fuzzy since most AI crawlers don't identify themselves as such, and pretend to be normal users.

The OTW hasn't released any similar data as far as I am aware, but my guess would be that Ao3 is being continuously crawled by all sorts of AI companies at every moment of the day. If you have a fanfic on Ao3, and it isn't locked to logged-in users only, then it's already going to be part of several AI training data sets. Only unlike this reddit guy, we'll never know for sure, because these AI training data sets won't be released to the public. Only the resulting AI models, or the chat bots that use these models, and whether that's illegal is… I dunno. Nobody knows. The US Supreme Court will probably answer that in 5-10 years time. Fun.

The solution I've seen from a lot of people is to lock their fics. That will, at best, only work for new fics and updates, it's not going to remove anything that e.g. OpenAI already knows.

And, of course, it assumes that these bots can't be logged in. Are they? I have no way of knowing. But if I didn't have a soul and ran an AI company, I might consider ordering a few interns to make a couple dozen to hundreds of Ao3 accounts. It costs nothing but time due to the queue system, and gets me another couple of million words probably.

In other words: I cannot guarantee that locked works are safe. Maybe, maybe not.

Also, I don't think there's a sure way to know whether any given work is included in the dataset or not. I suppose if ChatGPT can give you an accurate summary when you ask, then it's very likely to be in, but that's by no means a guarantee either way.

What to do? Honestly, I don't know. We can hope for AI companies to go bankrupt and fail, and I'm sure a lot of them will over the next five years, but probably not all of them. The answer will likely have to be political and on an international stage, which is not an easy terrain to find solutions for, well, anything.

Ultimately it's a personal decision. For myself, I think the joy I get from writing and having others read what I've written outweighs the risks, so my stories remain unlocked (and my blog posts as well, this very text will make its way into various data sets before too long, count on it). I can totally understand if others make other choices, though. It's all a mess.

Sorry to start, middle and end this on a downer, but I think it's important to be realistic here. We can't demand useful solutions for this from our politicians if we don't understand the problems.

Spooktacular Date Night

Summary: Dick asks Damian to hand out candy while the reader and him are having a Halloween date night, let’s just say things don’t end up very well

This year for Halloween, instead of handing out candy for Halloween, Dick was going to surprise you by having a Halloween themed date while you guys kept a candy bow outside. Dick’s only concern was some kids taking all the candy and leaving none for any others. But thankfully he had a solution, all he had to do was ask the solution.

“If you think I’m going to stay out there for free you’re more than wrong, I want something in return” Damian huffed when Dick asked him.

“Fine I’ll do whatever you want can you please just watch the bowl while we are having our date?” Dick asked.

“I guess so” Damian said.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you” dick exclaimed.

With that, Dick went out shopping, buying anything he thought looked cute. When Dick got home, he knew that you would still be out shopping for king sized candy bars for the kids (because you were that cool), so he he had a lot time to decorate before you got home. Dick saw your car pulling up he quickly got giddy and he couldn’t wait for you to walk through the door.

“Hey ba- oh my god, what is all of this?” You said in awe as the bags of candy bars fell off of your hands.

“Surprise y/n” Dick smiled sheepishly.

“I love this Dick, but what about handing out candy to the kids?” You said as you hugged him.

“Oh I have someone to deal with that for us” Dick said as Damian came walking out of the bathroom, almost on queue.

“Oh hey y/n you’re finally home” Damian said.

“It’s nice to see you Damian” you smiled.

“I guess this means I’m being put to work now” Damian sighed before he left.

“So what are we going to do first?” you asked.

“I’m glad you asked” Dick smiled before leading you to the dining room where two pumpkins, and pumpkin carving tools laid.

“Oh my god” you said as you ran to hug dick.

You and Dick had fun carving the pumpkins together. It was just like what you dreamed having a boyfriend would be when you were in Highschool. Dick was so perfect, you still wonder how you managed to pull him.

You and Dick had a blast carving pumpkins together. It was something so simple but something that you would remember for a lifetime. After the two of you were done carving your pumpkin designs, Dick took you to the living room, where snacks laid on the table.

“I have a whole movie marathon ready for us” Dick smiled as he lead you to the couch.

The first movie that the two of you watched was Hocus Pocus, a classic. The two of you cuddled into a warm blanket, while you watched. The two of you needed up only watching two more movies before you ended up just making out on the couch.

But your make out session was cut short when Damian came bursting into the room.

“Dick, y/n, you might want to stop making out and call an ambulance, some imbecile tried to steal your whole candy bucket but, let’s just say he’s taking a nap on your front porch” Damian said calmly.

“DAMIAN! I THOUGHT WE AGREED THAT THERE WOULD BE NO VIOLENCE!” Dick shouted.

“I take my job’s very seriously” Damian said before walking back outside as if nothing happened

I’m obsessed with this duo, they are everything I dreamed they would be!!!

"y/n," quil whined as he came up to the porch of emily's house, dramatically flopping down in front of you, eliciting a series of giggles from you. you set your book down on the table next to you, leaning forward in the rocking chair you were sitting on to get a better look at the boy on the floor in front of you.

"what's wrong?" you giggled, smiling down at him when he let out a dramatic sigh before looking up at you.

"your boy toys, and i mean this in the nicest way possible, are mean as fuck and i think they're literally going to be the reason half of us perish from heat stroke," he explained theatrically before sitting up to lean back on his elbows while he looked around for a bottle of water.

you hummed, quickly handing him your hydroflask so he could have a few sips, "you said they're being mean?" you asked, curious to know what exactly paul and jared were doing to the rest of the pack while sam left them in charge.

quil nodded as he took a massive sip from your hydroflask, letting out a heavy sigh of relief when he swallowed before continuing, "they're like bitching us out for not working hard enough. no joke i think they're off their rockers or something because everyone is dying out there," he explained before taking another massive glug of water while he waited for you to come up with some kind of solution to his problem.

you hummed as you thought about what to do about it, "you guys are just working right past the tree line, right? jared said you all wouldn't be far," you asked, already having a fully thought out plan about how you were going to tell them off for acting absolutely nuts.

you weren't totally sure how quil had managed to get out of there without jared or paul picking up on what his plans were considering they could all read each other's thoughts but you guessed it didn't really matter since he was here now.

"yea we're literally like right over there," he explained, pointing his finger at the tree line and, as if on queue, embry and jacob's wolves came barrelling through the tree line as they fought each other.

you rolled your eyes, "can you come with me to make sure i don't get wiped out by one of these fools?" you asked, turning you attention back to quil who eagerly nodded, happy to know you were going to be dealing with this problem on his behalf.

the two of you got up then, quil taking one last massive gulp of your water before the two of you were walking over to the tree line. he made sure to stay right in front of you in case one of the wolves did accidentally slam into you.

lucky for you, no wolves hit you and the two of you came into the clearing within a minute and you immediately narrowed your eyes at paul and jared who were currently in their wolf forms, both easily towering over the rest of the wolves (minus jacob who you guessed was about the same size as them).

"what the hell are you two doing?" you asked as you walked over to them, all the rest of the pack immediately bouncing around by quil when the realized quil had managed to get you to help them out.

jared was the first to cave, immediately letting out a low whine as he lowered his head in front of you, bowing so he was in a sort of downward dog position. you sighed, turning your attention to paul who looked more disgruntled than anything, "you two are idiots if you think any of these people will listen to you OR trust your decision making abilities if you're mean to them," you ranted, glaring at paul who let out a whine, similar to jared's when he realized you were actually kind of irritated with them.

"and i know both of you are more than qualified to do a good job leading these clowns while sam is out for the day but you two can't seriously think any of these people will actually want to listen to a word you say if you don't treat them with the same respect and kindness they all show you two," you finished, crossing your arms over your chest as you raised an eyebrow at paul, not even the slightest bit concerned that he was easily towering over you in his wolf form.

it was silent for a moment, you and paul just staring at each other while you waited for the other to budge. paul was the first to concede though, letting out a low whine as he also dropped his head so he was in the same downward dog-ish position your other imprinter was in.

you let out a soft sigh, threading your fingers into both of their fur to gently scratch at their heads, "that's what i thought," you murmured, a hint of teasing in your voice that had quil letting out a breathy laugh from behind you, absolutely awestruck that you managed to knock some sense into both of them in record time.

paul let out a low growl as quil's laughter and you just quietly shushed him, "now can we all go inside? it's getting late and emily is just finishing up dinner and i don't wanna fuck up her schedule," you explained, smiling when both boys lifted their heads to nod at you, the rest of the pack quickly trotting to the tree line so they could phase back and get changed.

you sighed, pressing a quick kiss to both of their heads, "i love you both but you two are seriously the biggest idiots i know sometimes," you murmured after the rest of the pack had phased back, giggling when jared rolled his eyes, "okay i'll meet you back at the house?" you asked softy, smiling when both boys nodded and quickly headed behind the trees so they could phase and get changed.

Tony and Stephen have a little kid. Tony is just a little bit jealous that the kid prefers Stephen and he is just a little bit obvious about it.

This is from, like, halfway through my prompt queue, and all the older prompts are great and I look forward to writing them, but I wanted my first one back from the IronStrange Week push to be a quick and easy one, and I already had an idea for this.

It’s a bit angsty, though. Sorry!

Andrew has always preferred Stephen. Even when he was a baby, he always calmed down faster with Stephen, smiled more with Stephen, managed all his firsts with Stephen cheering him on.

Tony hoped, privately, that when he got a little older, Andrew would appreciate him more. He’s four now, and it’s still Stephen that he runs to with his triumphs and Stephen that he wants comfort from.

Buying his affection isn’t the solution, Tony knows it isn’t, but it feels like the only way he can get Andrew excited and affectionate with him. Thank you hugs aren’t as good as I love you hugs, but they’re better than nothing. Even if they do get him in trouble.

“Tony, I already said no,” Stephen says after Andrew has run off with his latest toy. He’s frowning.

“Come on, he’s so excited!” Tony waves after their son. “How can that be wrong?”

Stephen sighs. “We’ve had this discussion. If he gets a new toy every week, all he learns is that everything is disposable, and he never gets to appreciate anything in depth.” They have had this discussion. Tony pauses a little too long, searching for a light response. Stephen gives him a searching look. “What’s wrong?

Damn it, Stephen knows him too well. “Nothing,” Tony says.

“Nothing means you don’t want to talk about it,” Stephen says. “But this is about Andrew. We need to talk about it.”

Tony rubs a hand over his face. “He doesn’t love me,” he finally admits. “I know buying him stuff isn’t a great substitute, but—”

Stephen takes Tony’s hand and pulls him over to sit on the couch, looking into his eyes intently. “Tony, Andrew absolutely loves you.”

Tony looks down at their clasped hands. “Not as much as he loves you.”

Stephen’s hesitation is telling. Andrew’s preferences are pretty obvious, after all. “I don’t know how to fix this.”

“You can’t,” Tony says, sighing. “I just… Everyone says that kids love unconditionally. I guess I thought—” He shrugs.

“He does love you unconditionally,” Stephen insists. “Okay, he has preferences, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you.”

Tony snorted. “I guess you still love me more than anyone else,” he says wryly.

Stephen just pulls Tony into his arms and holds him for a while.
