ADOREE your thg red dead au. eating it up so hard. your designs for katniss and for peeta. the dynamic of ranch hand peeta and local hunter katniss. the detail of katniss trying to send prim into the city where she’ll hopefully be safer as a white passing indigenous girl. what role would haymitch play do you think? how do you think katniss and peeta get looped into the narrative?

Haymitch owns a little homestead in Cumberland Forest that Katniss uses as a sort of stopover when she heads to the Mellark ranch in New Hanover, much to his annoyance.

Peeta will come visit now and again after Katniss takes him there. Haymitch teaches him how to play poker - turns out the kid is disturbingly good at it (Katniss is terrible, obviously)

If you mean the main game narrative with Arthur, this is mainly set a few years beforehand, though it does contribute to the growing tensions between the Wapiti and the army. Not sure how much I want to spoil(?) rn - I'll probably make a plot summary after the character profiles are done :)

Oh! Since I'm here, I might as well mention that the working title for the au is These Vast, Unending Skies

...unfortunately, the acronym tvus already means something else entirely. Anyone got ideas for a good tag?

A Distress Call In Ruined Chicago

Back when the world was still thriving before the Demon Qliphoth Tree destroyed the world and killed about 1.2 Billion People upon its emergence and brought mankind to the closest it's ever been to complete human extinction, according to Dante, the phone at Devil May Cry would ring quite often. However, Vergil doubted it called nearly as much as he claimed. Even in this semi-apocalyptic and shattered new world, Devil May Cry was still in business, his brother just had to relocate and rebuild. Thankfully, his younger brother's new shop wasn't too far from where Vergil called home, an old half-destroyed home that Vergil stumbled upon on a rainy night.

While looking partially destroyed on the outside, the inside of the home was still mostly intact, just missing a few rooms, over time Vergil had gathered resources in between devil-hunting missions to gather material he could use to restore, and fortify the home--which he did, and it was in much better shape thanks to his efforts. Devil May Cry was only twenty blocks from his home, but thanks to Vergil's powers, he had no trouble making the commute since he had been to the location once already, he could picture it in his mind, allowing him to use his trick teleport to it. Without anything else to do today, Vergil had decided to swing by there and check things out.

Doing exactly that, Vergil disappeared in a shade of midnight blue, reappearing inside Devil May Cry--only to find it completely empty. It didn't take long for him to spot the note left on his brother's desk, picking it up, it read:

Hey Verg, if you're reading this, Lady and Trish hooked me up with a good mission, a big job, and I'm not gonna say no to money, should be back in a few days. Pizza's in the fridge. Help yourself, I got a lot.

The older son of Sparda shook his head, no Dante, I don't want your greasy pizza he thought to himself, flicking the note back onto the desk. Turning his back to leave, much to his surprise, the phone started to ring, since there was no one else here, he knew if this was a job, he'd have to take it. Well, at least it would kill his boredom and pay him, so he picked up the phone.

[{ 🗡️ }] - "Devil May Cry. Devil Hunter Vergil speaking, what's the mission?"

The caller is a frantic male soldier, he tells Vergil that there's a squad of resource scavenger soldiers who are pinned down all the way in what was left of Chicago, another place the half-devil had been at before on previous missions. The northwest survivors camp was asking if he could escort one of their skilled medics to the distress call so she could treat them before bringing them back since there were quite a few of them required immediate medical attention with the severity of their injuries which meant, they were on borrowed time.

Vergil accepts and hangs up the phone. Picturing the location, the Cambion teleports, appearing at the gates of the aforementioned camp. The second the guards stationed at the gates spot him, they call down to the others below near the gate where Vergil arrived, the gate was opened not long after. One of the soldiers walked with him, giving him a general quick briefing as he made his way over to the center plaza of the camp. Once he arrived, he was met with the person he was escorting, a beautiful young woman medic, with dark brown hair and striking grey eyes, now that he thought about it, recalled seeing her a few times during his last few visits here.

[{ 🗡️ }] - "You're the medic I presume? I'm Vergil, it seems I'm going to be your escort today."

[{ 🗡️ }] - "While you can rest assured that I will diligently do my duty and keep you safe, it can get a bit dicey out in the badlands, so there's one question I always ask with these types of jobs. Just for a general purpose. Do you have any experience in fighting demons? If not, is there any form of self-defense that you know?"

pros of learning how to play fighting game:

undergoing a learning experience, trying out something entirely different from anything i have previously played

i get to look at a little guy do cool things on my screen :)

cons of learning how to play fighting game:

i am clumsy as all hell with the inputs

the order in which you press and/or hold buttons to create inputs is less like trying to get a sequence of movements right and more like playing a rhythm game (down then while not letting go of down press forward then let go of down and THEN press an attack button on the other side of the keyboard). i suck at rhythm games. hell world

sometimes, the damn things just... won't register? at all? you do a half circle to forward input and the game says "half circle forward? oh, sorry, that's ensenga :)" or, worse, "too slow, that's a regular heavy slash move :)". brother. why must you do me like this.

the area between the knuckles of my ring and little finger hurts like a motherfucker (though this has hurt in various areas since at least this morning, but i'm willing to bet that practicing quarter and half circle inputs for at least an hour did not make the situation any better)

And, well, at first, everything remained hunky-dory for a while -- Victor continued harvesting the greenhouse, safe and snug in his winter coat; Alice continued her meditation -- having a BIT of trouble with her levitation, but it's all fine, she got her feet back under her quickly, metaphorically speaking -- and Smiler moved from push-ups to bonsai pruning, giving the little tree a windswept shape and getting up to Gardening level 8 in the process! :) I thought everyone was going to wait out the weather just fine --

And then I saw Clement going outside for some reason. For a split second, I thought he'd FINALLY decided to go home...but then I saw a cake in his thought bubble.

And then I saw Toothy. In the front yard. In the middle of the blizzard.

With its cake tongue sticking out.

...I am not gonna lie, I was tempted to just let things play out for a moment. XD Because the first chomp never kills a Sim, only drains their emotions, and I was pretty annoyed with Clement for refusing to take a hint and leave. But I quickly decided, "No, I can't let that happen to Father Winter" and instead had Alice stop her meditation, activate her werewolf super-speed, call Clement into the hallway before he could get any farther --

And then ZOOM over to Toothy to feed the damn thing while Clement went back inside the house. XD Disaster averted! After that, though, I thought, "Okay, I want to open the store anyway, maybe it's time to get out of here before Clement gets into something ELSE he shouldn't--"

But then I saw Shadow coming into the house absolutely FILTHY after doing her business, and went, "Okay, FIRST the dog gets a bath." XD So Smiler took her upstairs and gave her a good scrub while Victor and Alice hung out downstairs, Alice licking herself clean (to Clement's disgust -- you see, that's why you don't get to live here, you're too judgemental about the werewolf stuff) and having synchronized kitten pets with Victor. XD Soon, though, all the pets and humans were clean and content -- which meant it was time to head off to San Myshuno!
