Rashomon (1950)

My rating: 6/10

I think this is yet another one of those seminal works that, because they were so seminal, have lost a lot of their punch - there have been so many references, homages and straight up rip-offs in the intervening 70-odd years, the original just ends up feeling kind of unremarkable.

“I don’t trust many people.” Akutagawa simply said at first, to which Atsushi reacted by lifting his head to properly look at him. They had been sitting together on the couch for a while, and cuddling had come almost naturally. But, as nice as keeping his face buried in the crook of his boyfriend’s neck was, he preferred to have the oncoming conversation face to face.

“Am I supposed to act surprised now or…?” Maybe that wasn’t the best way to nudge Ryûnosuke to go on, but please: the opportunity had been served on a golden plate.

“Very funny, jinko.” Akutagawa responded by pinching Atsushi on the arm, though he didn’t look down to see if the gesture had been carried out by his own hand or using Rashômon. “Do you  have any other smart remarks or can I get to the point?” The  tone was somewhat dry, yes, but the slight smirk in his lips gave away how he wasn’t really bothered by Atsushi’s comment.

“By all means, yeah.”

“I want you to never doubt you are now one of those people, alright? And I also want you to not make any other attempt at comedy as an answer.” Atsushi, who had indeed opened his mouth, closed it for a second at being ‘caught’ and simply stared at Akutagawa while beaming as if he had just won the lottery; as if he was receiving new information when it wasn’t the case.

Then, after barely a minute, leaned in to close the small distance between their faces and kissed. First, on the forehead, then over the tip of his nose, and finally on the lips.

Still to this day cannot believe someone at DreamWorks was successfully able to pitch "Little Red Riding Hood but we do it the style of the iconic 1950 Akira Kurosawa film Rashômon." And the resulting product was one of the greatest 3D animated films ever made.

So, I recently picked up Hell Screen by Akutagawa Ryunnosuke. I like it so far, the ton and the format of the stories are original and interesting. But Rashômon confused me still. I have a personal interpretation of the ending ofc but I would love if someone who has more knowledge in Japanese culture, folklore or litterature would give their personal insights on it.

As we said, House of the Dragon is based on Fire & Blood, which Martin has called a “fake history” book. It’s not a novel where the story is told start to finish. Rather, the book is “written” by Archmaester Gyldayn, a historian born many years after the events he’s writing about. As such, he’s working with different primary sources, some of which conflict with each other. What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? The sources aren’t clear, so neither are we.

Martin got the idea for telling a story with conflicting perspectives many years ago while doing research for a book about journalism. He was trying to find out the number of stories in a certain building long since razed, and found that different books said different things.

That said, the TV version of Fire & Blood won’t have conflicting perspectives — the writers chose which version is the “real” one — although Martin and the rest of the team did consider framing the story with Archmaester Gyldayn writing 200 years later, which would have allowed for us to see different versions of the same events. “Sort of a Rashômon approach,” as Martin put it.

“... Wow.” Atsushi instantly smiled, immediately trying to come up with something just as smooth… and failing, as he opted for something else instead. “Y’know, that’s very beautiful, but also funny considering how I see colors myself.” A Rashômon tendril quickly pinched him, with no actual force but enough insistence to make him know what Akutagawa was thinking about such a comment.

“Jinko.” And if the latter hadn’t been enough, his voice tone made things even more clear.

“Couldn’t resist.” Was Atsushi’s answer, shrugging with the demeanor of someone who had exactly no regrets. After all, he didn’t. Anyway, time to get serious. “It’s more accurate if I’m the one saying that, since you’re the one who changed my way to see things in quite some ways.” Akutagawa then scoffed, using Rashômon again now to slightly smack him with (again) no actual force.

“As if you hadn’t changed my perspective as well, you fool.” Now, it was Akutagawa’s turn to smile.
