#Reading KHR in Japanese

What KHR characters call everyone in Japanese

If KHR characters use the second person, let's see who they call whom and how. For now, let's talk about the 10th generation.

To begin with, the second person is rarely used in Japanese conversation. Japanese can function without a subject or object, so there is no need for the word "you" to be present in a conversation. And many people call the person by their name or attributes when they need to call speaking to. So, if the distance is close but the name is not listed, assume that the most basic way of call for them is used. Or very little.

Then, the following should be noted:

It's just if they have ever called them in canon.

Basically, we can think no special meaning is implied. It was possible that they just happened to need to use second person pronouns to speaking with. Please enjoy it as a reference!

Tsuna

He almost always calls someone by their name. But sometimes he uses:

"Omae" (お前/おまえ)

To Reborn, Lambo, Haru, Enemys(including past one), and everyone when he is hyper mode.

"Kimi"(君/きみ)

To Gokudera, Chrome, Kyoko(rarely), Enma

Gokudera

He rather rarely calls people by their name. He calls everyone by nickname. Or

"Omae" (it can be rough sometimes)

To everyone without Tsuna and Reborn (Especially, Yamamoto, Haru, Lambo)

Or he sometimes calls Bianchi "Anta". See immediately below for more details on this. And it is sometimes used at a time when a rebellious child is unsure what to call a parent. When he uses this second person pronoun to her, there is more like this nuance than rude, it feel like clumsy.

Yamamoto

He uses both their name and second person pronouns. However, he uses different the second person between enemies and friends.

"Omae"

To everyone who isn't his enemy. But it's not often used for older than him.

"Anta"(あんた)

This is a corruption of the pronunciation of "Anata". The expression is relatively rough and not polite. It have a little rude nuances, so it isn't used with people who has relationship. But these aren't much of a problem for middle school students to use to people who have distance.

To his enemies (maybe adult one, he uses "Omae" to Ken.)

Ryohei

He uses their name as a second person. But when he uses second person pronouns, it's quite unique.

"Omae "

To everyone

"Kisama" (貴様/きさま)

In today, it is rough expression. In comics, villains sometimes use it. However, he uses it, there is no nuance of looking down on the others. Rather, it feel honest or simple honesty like his old-fashioned Japanese boy style.

To enemies (including light quarrel)

Hibari

He never attempt to call people their name as a second person. It's only Kusakabe and Roll that he does so. If it's absolutely necessary, he calls them by full name.

"Kimi"

To everyone, even animals or human.

"Anata"

To Dino (I thought he uses for adults, but he used "Kimi" for Genkishi or Xanxus.)

Lambo

As you know, he is unique kid. He speaks like to everyone present rather than conversing with any one person. Therefore, the second person is used less often. And when he uses it, he almost always calls the others by their name. Sometimes:

"Omae"

To Reborn, enemies (kid and both adult)

"Anta" (rarely)

To enemies (+10yo adult uses)

Mukuro

He doesn't call people by their names very often basically. Occasionally he calls them by their name, but it uses their full name. And this isn't the case towards to his companions. He sometimes calls his companion their first name.

"Kimi"

To everyone with his companions

"Omae"

To his companions (especially Ken and Flan)

Chrome

She is quiet, using few words so mostly no subject or object. Therefore, there may be rather more opportunities to use second person pronouns than person's name. However, she often calls Ken, Chikusa, and Mukuro by their first names.

"Anata"

To everyone (Especially stranger. And it's regardless of ages.)

In addition, it they call to someone by name, they may be given honorific titles and a variety of suffixes. Which one they choose will give a completely different impression. If I try to combine them into one post, it would be a book :D I will post other character's second person or honorific titles soon, but again, it can't go into detail of all. So here I am after finding the ask. Anon, To Retire in the Waves is my fic. You can see that I was a youngin who thought they knew all about Japanese just because I watched anime by the fact that I thought the Nami in Namimori meant Wave cos of Nami no Kuni in Naruto lolz.

And the anon who contacted me via my old beta pal got something's wrong. Tsuna wasn't illegitimate. Just a neglected older son, again a popular trope those days. Still is tbh. And it had dimension travel and all.

But good news. Your ask motivated me to find the fic in my folders and re-read it and I'm brimming with inspiration. So I'm officially re-writing it. I'll send link here when I'm done with the first chapter. Thank you for reigniting my love for KHR anon!

I also feel you on the KHR reboot, though I can't find it in myself to completely give up hope. You know what I would happily settle for? The manga being put back in print. I live in the USA and I hate that it isn't sold anymore

anywhere. It's near impossible to find. And you can't find anything after the Future Arc. Hell, I'd love to have an official translation of the Hidden Bullet novels and such.

I can definitely get not wanting to completely give up hope! I wish with all my soul a reboot would come along and surprise us all, revitalize the fandom, so I get the want for it, just don't really think it will happen sadly! Oh my god though, do I feel you on that one. Canada here - I have volumes 1-5 and 7-10 collected in earlier days of the fandom before they became quite so impossible to find. I cannot find volume 6 anywhere and even finding any volumes past 10 now? Impossible, unless I want the original Japanese versions and even then, they're used copies and expensive. I'd honestly love to see a rerelease of the whole manga, especially if they'd put out omnibus editions to make it easier to collect and afford! And you are definitely preaching to the choir on the Hidden Bullet novels. I have so many other series where translations of the light novels are easy to find and it should've been like that with KHR. Hell, I bought the School Briefs for BNHA and the BSD light novels right from my Kindle! The Hidden Bullet novels, translated and readily available, I think would have drawn a lot of fans in. The fan translations I've read were all solid, yes, but hard to find and I had to use Google Translate on a couple of them, but the stories alone?? God, some of them were absolutely incredible and they all added a lot of really interesting aspects to the characters! You're not alone in those wishes at all and I'm with you - I doubt it would happen. I'm sure the publishers and such don't think there's enough of a demand, but it would be like 20+ years of Christmases all at once if it ever happened! Gonna be honest, it took me a little bit to actually get into it. I didn't really like how it started cuz it felt kinda really slow and silly? But I REALLY love where they went with it.

I also saw Reborn when it aired in Japan. I remember sitting there watching it (it was the Vongola Rings arc that was showing in Japan) and not having any idea what was going on cuz it was all in Japanese with no subs. But I just enjoyed watching it.

Every time I hear a person who started reading or watching khr, the "slow start" is always the main complain lol. And yes, it is totally true.

Yet, after finishing the manga, I also think it is extremely funny how the start of khr feels like a bunch of anime fillers, yet totally canon. You know how often some people wish they had more canon material about the characters being silly together or going on little adventures when it shows how much they care for each other, or even how those bonds came to be so strong... In that sense, khr does an amazing job. When things start to get complicated, the reader is able to understand why Tsuna's friend stick with him, even in the craziest of scenearios.

They are friends! The go to silly competitions and they face whatever Reborn has planned for them on that week and they drag their asses to Tsuna's house to help him with every little predicament. They lunch the things his mom prepare, they do math homework together, theh babysit together.

Half those episodes are Reborn training them and strengthening their bonds, making sure Tsuna has their loyalty and affection. I makes me sick in the head with how much I love it all.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes, I respond to comments. I believe if someone took the time to write me a comment the polite thing to do is reply back. Also, I think it builds a fun community on my fics where some people comment regularly on my fics.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I think majority of my KHR fics have angsty endings simply because Shouichi is trapped with Byakuran no matter what. Not sure which is the most angsty, so it's up to you.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Honestly, I'm not sure. I usually end my fics on a happy note. I suppose the fic ending that has made ME the happiest is The taste of melon and the weight of a plushie fox.

8. Do you get hate on fic? I've had hate on my fics, yes. One of those fics I had the same person pester me twice. It caused me to feel anxious whenever I saw my email notification on my phone. I deleted the fic. You'll never, ever see the fic again.

9. Do you write smut? Yes, I do. It's all private though. I'm not posting it because the idea of posting makes me uncomfortable.

10. Do you write crossovers? I've written several crossovers with some unhinged choices. I have a Danganronpa/Assassination Classroom series, a Danganronpa/Kingdom Hearts fic, a Danganronpa/Bungou Stray Dogs fics: Night Sky and the sequel Unanswered Questions. There are some collaborated crossovers with the Glorious Bar AU (with M34GS) and our Twisted Wonderland/sort of Saw Franchise AU.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of. I've locked down my fics due to AI scraping though. Just to be safe.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship? Writing wise? Komahina (SDR2). Reading and in general? Satosugu (JJK).

15. What's a wip you want to finish but probably won't? I have three attempts at a FE Fates Kiznaiver AU that will NEVER be completed and I am sad.

16. What are your writing strengths? Writing scenery. I adore writing scenery and find it easy and fun. I also think I describe food well? M34GS has told me some food I've described in fics sounds like I've eaten it and I haven't.

17. What is your writing weakness? Sometimes I find writing what characters are doing between moments in the scene challenging.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? In general I don't like doing it because of my comfort level with other languages. I'm fine with Japanese (speak a comfortable level) but characters like Rook from Twisted Wonderland are a challenge.

19. First fandom you wrote for? First fandom I ever wrote for was either Inu Yasha or Shaman King. First fandom I ever POSTED is a tie between DMMD and SDR2.

Vongola 10th generation squad (+Byakuran and Kyoko) based on @bonesetblues​‘s KHR/BNHA crossover curiosity kills the cat (but satisfaction brings it back)

As yet in the fic only Tsunayoshi and Byakuran have actual established cat forms, so I was like,,, WHEEEE Tsuna I did him as a cinnamon classic tabby longhair. Not actually doing him as a Norwegian Forest Cat, but I did base his facial structure on one a bit. (And it is quite funny to envision him going from being one of the smallest of his agemates to having a good kilo on them) Byakuran Longhair, high white spotting over lilac (with a carried point gene because even carried it can affect the eyes sometimes). Also wings. He came out kinda Eh sadly, I think Hayato Mediumhair blue silver spotted mackerel tabby. Something about him gave me spotted tabby vibes (and hey, kinda a shoutout to Uri), and I got to make his facial markings be a shourout to his glasses. Takeshi Shorthair black solid, very low white spotting. Homozygous for Japanese Bobtail (fun fact, Japanese Bobtail is a Partial Dominance gene- with only one JB gene, the cat has a shorter than normal kinked tail instead). I actually concluded that Bobtail was a very fun idea for Takeshi, because it’d make him a lot harder to read. You can’t really see the emotions the tail would convey if the tail is that short, after all; like how Takeshi generally gives off cheerful vibes all the time, shrouding his actual thoughts. Kyoya Black solid mediumhair, with very oriental-type build and head structure. Lambo Did him as a kitten because, well. him young. Gave him Laperm-type curled fur, since Lambo has fairly curly hair (he’d be medium or longhair, but, well, kittenfluff) and curled ears (to reference his lightning horns). Black solid with medium white spotting forming patches to reference his general cow theming. Chrome Blue solid shorthair (pale/light blue). Gave her some white hairs to indicate scars because,,, how, exactly, did she end up losing an eye and internal organs and not have scars? (even if the accident didn’t leave any somehow, surely there were medical proceedures at some point that would have?) Mukuro Blue solid mediumhair (dark blue). You know, I didn’t realise his other eye was blue until right now? (Although I’m a manga reader so) Also his Eye of Reincarnation is drawn in its third path, Path of Beasts, because I Thought It Was Funny. Ryohei Shorthair blue silver classic tabby with extreme ticking and rufousing, and a little white spotting. I actually have other incarnations of Ryohei. Still a bit iffy on how our attempt at his markings/colouration came out here. (alternate version that can’t be put here because of image limit is a red tabby with very high white spotting, with his red patches being in more unusual spots than you’d usually have, and slightly higher rufousing than Kyoko)

Kyoko Longhair red classic tabby with extreme ticking and less extreme rufousing than her brother, and low white spotting on her nose. (have an alternate version is the same but just, classic tabby instead of ticked classic tabby, but again, don’t have the image allowance to put that in this post) Other characters who we are considering doing: Xanxus- gives me real strong longhair/ medium-high rufousing / black classic tabby vibes. Probably built like a maine coon. Big beefy boy. Squalo- It’d be kinda funny to have him be a shorthair? Just because imagining how he’d flip out given the reason he has longhair is mildly amusing. Blue silver broken mackerel tabby to go for shark gill/scale vibes. Maybe some white spotting? Reborn- author of the fic thinking melanistic serval, me over here going “would a black savanna cat or a very small black cat be funnier?” Like, a savanna cat is 100% going to cause chaos, they’re leggy and they’re a hybrid breed that’s still using the rather unfortunate wild ancestors (unlike Bengals which are now a... what’s it called, a fixed breed? and no longer use their progenitor species) so the non-domestic genes are still very much there. A savanna is tall enough to open your doors easily. But on the other hand, having a tiny black thing doing all the same things despite the size IS very funny to think about. Expected vs unexpected chaos, I guess? those are the only other ones that really wandered through my mind while I was doing these, but maybe others will in time

Hey so I know you don't talk about yoi anymore, so feel free to ignore this ask. But I just find it interesting looking back years later, how everything you predicted came true? The series ended the way you said it would and sure enough there has been a rise in series like yoi since then, with large male casts and "romance" between them, but not really a rise in lgbt content

I'll have to take your word for it anon, since I've watched little to no anime in recent years (I just read manga). I mean Banana Fish was a blatant attempt by MAPPA to duplicate the yoi effect, but otherwise I'm not sure what else... I suppose Housekishou Richard-shi no Nazo Kantei... and maybe Fugoh Keiji, Idolish, Tsurune (tho that's more Free), and SK8?? (disclaimer that I have not watched any of these and am just going off what I've heard about them)

Keep in mind though that such shows were already on the rise because of the growth of the BL industry and the rise of female fans for shounen shows like Prince of Tennis, KHR, and Kuroko no Basket (and more recently, Haikyuu, Demon Slayer, and JJK). So yoi might've given studios a further push forward but they were already heading there.

On the plus side, there has actually been an increase in lgbt representation in Japanese media, but more so in tv dramas and manga. And that's due to a combination of past tv dramas pushing the envelope and activism. But anyway, we love to see it.

So yeah, I'm honestly not sure how right I ended up being lol (except the ending. the ending, I did predict correctly)

About honorific titles and the suffixes add to name in Japanese. With KHR!

In Japan, honorific titles or suffixes add to names when conversing with a person whom you have just met. It isn't used depending on the person's age or personality, but it may give the impression of rudeness or aggression. It's rarely lack, between adults and never lack in a business situation.

I must speak stereotypically because the era in which KHR was serialized is different from today, but the actual trend today are not much different either.

さん(San)

This is a very useful and most common honorific title. It can be used for all genders and ages, or for formal situation and everyday life without any problems. Basically, it's an expression of distance including positive means. This can be used any person like juniors, classmates, or business partners.

For example, Tsuna feels Dino is friendly, but calls him as "Dino-san". This is use of "San" to older people than him. Adding "San" to older people than me is a common practice that has almost become a formality.

Or when he met Chrome a second time, he confused "Chrome-san? Dokuro-San...? What should I call you?". This is "San" for someone you have never met before or for someone has distance. In most cases, "San" is add to last name, but "Chrome Dokuro" is not a Japanese name, it made Tsuna more confused.

様/さま(Sama)

This is a more polite honorific title than "San". It is used for formal business partners and customers, not for friends nor for bosses or people you have never met before. The original word has the meaning of respect and is sometimes used for call their name people who are refer to "master" or "lord" in English. It's rarely used in a personal relationship in reality.

Chikusa and Chrome calls "Mukuro-sama", Levi had called "Xanxus-sama" , and Kikyo calls "Byakuran-sama". These are typical uses of "Sama", They really respect their boss.

The following two have no meaning of respect. It is a suffix added after the name. They may be used formality nuances or as nicknames. Both are used for children mostly, but sometimes to adults up to about age 30. Children calls a each other uses these suffx they have just met as it also formally. It is possible that it will become a nickname and continue to call with these. Or it may also be used by parents against their children.

くん(Kun)

Traditionally, it uses for boy mostly. It's used more often from women to men than from men to men. And this has also a little quiet nuances, so it is not often used for KHR characters, most of whom never quiet. It may also be used by a superior to call a subordinate.

However as you know, Tsuna calls Gokudera "Gokudera-kun" as a friend, not as a subordinate. In his case, he uses it as a friend, like when Tsuna calls CEDEF member Basil "Basil-kun".

ちゃん(Chan)

Traditionally, it uses for girl mostly. This use a common expression between women. It is rarely used formally with men, but is sometimes used as a nickname all gender.

So, it's not strange for Byakuran calls to his adult best friend as "Syo-chan". This is a common way to call a man add "Chan" as a nickname.

Or Kyoko and Haru call each other "Kyoko-chan" "Haru-chan". They are very close, but have been calling each other this ever since they met. This is another good example of "chan" being established as a nickname. The suffix may be lost by getting to close, but it depends on their personalities.

KHR Japanese characters often uses honorific titles or suffix, but Italian characters doesn't use it. It's not surprising considering the culture, but interesting. Yes, Dino called Iemitsu "Iemistu-san" once. Why does he still have no plans to build a house in Japan?

Idiots misunderstanding words

You know what gets my goat when it comes to various KHR fanfics? The many people who don’t seem to understand something when referring to the main character Tsuna. Specifically his title of “Dame-Tsuna”. Many times now I’ve seen authors refer to Tsuna as being “a dame”, but the thing with that is that it Doesn’t Make Sense grammatically if you’re referring to him properly or with the proper translation. Some people don’t seem to understand that the Japanese word “dame” - pronounced daw-may, not like the english slang word “daym” to which means “a girl or woman” - translates to “useless” or “no-good”. So to read a story that have sentences like “He’s a dame” or “Yes, a complete dame” makes me mad and annoyed because the author seems to be stupidly writing “He’s a no-good/useless” or “Yes, a complete no-good/useless” which makes no sense to those of us who translate that stuff as we read! He is “Dame/No-Good”, not a “Dame/No-Good” (to which one can also argue that it implies/makes it seem that he’s just one of many who’re “Dame/No-Good”) and to write otherwise is frustrating to read because my brain is telling me the author is an idiot who doesn’t know how to write proper sentence structure.

TL;DR Whenever referring to Tsuna’s title or the use of the Japanese word of “dame” in KHR fanfic, please remember that it means “No-good/Useless” and structure your sentences accordingly. You look like an idiot to anyone who knows that you don’t understand the concept of Tsuna’s Protagonist-Vice/Flaw or how to correctly show its usage in your story.

JUST got to the Kokuyo Arc in KHR, I swear, it feels like it happened way sooner in the story in my memories but it HAS been years since I read KHR so I guess that's fair

One question tho: Why do Mukuro, Chikusa, and Ken, all have Japanese names? Like, they've been with the Estraneo Famiglia since childhood/birth possibly? Even on Mukuro's wiki page it says his nationality is Italian, so... why the Japanese names? Even in the crew, M.M. is French, Lancia is Italian, and I guess Birds and the weird twins are also Italian (I don't care about them they weren't important.)

Also, theory, but I firmly believe that Hibari's parents (or at least one of them) HAVE to have yakuza connections. I feel that's one of the only ways to explain the reason he's Like That. There's never any explanations for anything, but this is a headcanon I will firmly believe.

Come to think of it I dont have a good grasp of the time things happen in KHR either LMAO.

The Forgotten Shounen: Katekyo Hitman Reborn

This is not a “Why you should watch/read khr” or anything like that. This is just me going into the deep dive and throwing my findings at you. I’m making this because khr used to be my favourite series when I was 15 (I had plushees, posters, tradingcards, the art book etc) and now as an adult I constantly find myself baffled at how unknow it seems to be.

1. Okay first what is khr?

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! or just Reborn! is a series by Akira Amano which was published in Weekly Shounen Jump from 2004 to 2012 (with 42 volumes) and got an anime adaption which run from 2006 to 2010 on Tv Tokyo (with 202 episodes and one OVA).

2. What’s it about?

Khr is a parody of the italian mafia and plays in a world where the mafia is heavily influencial. The protagonist is the japanese middle schooler Sawada Tsunayoshi who is known as “No good Tsuna” because of his failing grades, general weak and cowardly personality and weak physics.

He becomes aware of the mafia world when a 2 year old baby called Reborn arrives at his house claiming to be the greatest hitman and declaring himself his home tutor. Reborn was send by the 9th head of the Vongola famiglia who is ready to retire and looking for a new heir. Which of course, is supposed to be Tsuna and now it's Reborns job to shape him into a worthy sucessor.

Tsuna rejects the violence of the mafia world and refuses the position as the 10th. Thanks to Reborn and his general craziness Tsuna meets different people and starts to make real friendships. Reborn wants 6 of those friends to be Tsuna's future guardians, basically a group of people which will be closest to him in the vongola famiglia. Tsuna might have no interest in those positions but the friendships he builds with them become really precious to him.

Reborns arrivial also brings in the enemies of the Vongola family which leads to Tsuna being forced to engage in battles. Generally Tsuna openly avoids fights and prefers to run away but will put himself in danger for his friends' sake or because of something Reborn did.

Through out the series Tsuna matures and gains strenght but he never becomes a power fantasy. He's just a guy with many flaws who grows through the human connections he makes.

Personally I think the relationship between Reborn and Tsuna is one of the best student teacher reltaionships in all of manga only topped by Mob and Reigen from Mob Psycho 100. Especially the last arc really underlines their unique relationship to me.

Furthermore, khr offers a new and unique battle system: The flames. I'm not gonna go into to too much detail but the general idea is that one fights with their dying will flame which basically turns off your the savety switch so you can fight with everything you have. The flames are seperated into different categories such as: sky, storm, mist, rain, sun, lightning and cloud and have different attributes asigned to each one. Tsuna's use of the sky flame and his transformation when using it is still one of my favourite shounen transformations to this day.

3. What happened?

The series did really well and then not so well over the course of its serialisation. After the manga got an anime adaption it increased in populairty and video games, light novels, and other products such as CDs were created based on the series. Reborn is one of the best selling series of Weekly Shōnen Jump and has sold around 30 Million volumes overall. It was and still is very popular in Japan but rather unknown in the west.

According to the article "The Rise and Fall of Weekly Shonen Jump: A Look at the Circulation of Weekly Jump" khr was the 10th bestselling series in Weekly Shōnen Jump, with a total of 7 million copies sold in 2007.

This number increasing to 15 milion in 2008. Which placed khr into the 4th best selling series of 2008 in Japan.

Between 2008 and 2010 those sales declined but still kept strong with khr as the 6th top selling manga in 2009, 8th best selling in 2010 and then 24th best selling in 2012.

In November 2014, readers of the Da Vinci magazine voted khr number 17 on a list of Weekly Shōnen Jump's greatest manga series of all time.

After the anime came to an apprupt stop in 2010 for unknown reasons the manga sells took a visible hit. (Apparently the studio wanted to put the anime on halt because they were busy with other projects and give Akira Amano time to develop her story but I couldn't find any source for this claim) Furthermore, the rushed last chapters of the manga in 2012 declined the popularity of the series even more. There's no offical statement as to why the manga was ended in such a way but it's reasonable to assume that Jump either cut it considering the decreasing sales or Akira Amano choose to end it for personal reasons.

Nontheless, Tsuna not being included in Jump Force (a fighting game where you can play as different characters from Jump) in 2019 even tho he made it in earlier Jump Stars games also underlines the decreased interest in the series.

Rumors on a reboot or anime adaption of the last two arcs surface from time to time but are genereally unlikely. Artland the studio which made khr has gone bankrupt around 2015-2016. It might be taken on by another studio but rather uncommen especially with such an old series.

4. Art style

The khr anime ended over 10 years ago and the old art style might not be appealing to newer audiences.

Especailly because the anime adaption follows Akira Amanos old art style which heavily developed within the years. Here a picture comparing characters in the new art style:

A modern anime adaption in the new art style would be aesthetically pleasing. It would probably look similiar to Psycho Pass since Akira Amano did the concept art for this series.

(My personal art student hot take is that both art styles are unique and fun. Up to this day Akira Amano still has my favourite art style and even if the amount folds in the characters clothing is a little extreme I love it dearly.)

5. Criticism

The show is not without flaws and even if I greatly enjoy it it wouldn't be right not to adress them.

Daily Life Arc:

A lot of people view the first 20 to 25 episodes as fillers and quickly lose intererst in the series. This is due to the fact that Akira Amano inteded the series to be a gag manga and focuses the first chapters on world building, character introduction and comical narratives. It's rumored that the decision to develop the story into a battle shounen was made because the sales weren't doing well enough at first. So the first chapters/episodes may seem titidious but are necessary for the story and the development of the characters. The tonal shift from a more gintama like gag manga to a darker battle focused story can also be offputting to some viewers.

Either way a lot of people blame this arc when discussing why khr never got an english dub or didn't end up on Toonami. I've also read that the manga never finished serializing in the north america. However, it finished in other western languages like german and spanish.

Censoring:

The anime censors A LOT. From Gokudera's smoking habit, Yamamoto's whole character arc which deals with heavy themes such as depression and suicidal thoughts. The general bloodiness of the manga was censored and sometimes whole chapters and characters were left out even if those were important to the devolopment of others.

Filler episodes:

Out of the 202 episodes the anime has around 29 filler episodes which makes roughly 14 %.

Sexism:

Even if Reborn was written by a woman most female characters are rather flat and their storylines often tied to a male character in one way or another.

Genereal things:

Khr, like many other long running series, is sometimes criticised for a lack of world building or unpopular narrative choices.

6. Hope?

Khr isn't exactly dead. As stated before the series is still very popular in Japan and still gets new merch pretty regulary. There are also petitions floating around for a reboot or a new anime season but those never get a lot of traction. Furthermore #Reborn2期アニメ化 (#Reborn2ndAnimation) used to get some traction on twitter not too long ago. Last year the Anime News Network did a poll on which anime the readers would like to see a rebooot of and khr placed second.

Either way here's a collection of recent khr things I could find.

- In 2018 a new bluray set was released in north america

- The khr stage play reached yet another new season

- A mobile game was released last year

- Currently ongoing anime cafe event called "Concerto di Vongola"

- Last month there was an event with the former VAs and stage play actors where they discussed their favourite khr episodes.

- There has been an increase in blind reacts to the openings on youtube which might bring in a new fan base. The biggest one I could find had around 90k views and was made in 2019. On this note check out the soundtrack. The first openeing Drawing Days by SPLAY still makes me go insane (but I'm biased of course)

There also renewed hope for a new season/reboot because Shaman King, Inuyasha and Bleach got anounced for new seasons after a long hiatus. It's important to keep in mind that the circumstances for those series are differnt tho. For example bleachs new anime is often tied to the immense success of the gatcha game.

7. Conclusion

Khr is a series which used to be a flagship for Weekly Shounen Jump and is deeply beloved by it's fans, especially in Japan. It influenced other shounen series like bnha. It would be nice to see it gaining a bigger fanbase in the west :)

BnHA Chapter 304: The Council of OFA

Previously on BnHA: Hawks and Best Jeanist were all, “what up Todofam, we are here to apply for the positions of ‘son #4’ and ‘weird uncle’, respectively,” and then proceeded to insert themselves into the family drama without waiting for an answer. Hawks briefed Endeavor on the nation’s current status of “totally fucked”, promised to help him sort that out, and then asked him about OFA. Endeavor was all, “oh do you mean One For All, the mysterious thing that my intern Deku was apparently being targeted for?” and then we cut away, presumably before Endeavor could clarify that it never occurred to him to follow up on that, and Hawks was all “no of course not, why would it occur to anyone other than me to follow up on any of this super weird and ominously important shit.” Anyway so meanwhile Bakugou was all “LET ME SCREAM AT DEKU UNTIL HE WAKES UP” and the other kids were all “NO”, and then the chapter ended with All Might being all “I wonder what the vestige!me is currently chatting with Deku about.”

Today on BnHA: Deku drops in on the Vestiges, who are all “sup Deku, how do you like our fancy chairs.” OFA II and III are all “if you need us we’ll just be standing here silently in the corner pretending to be invisible and sparking endless discourse with our mere existence.” OFA IV is all “and now I will explain to you in a very convoluted way that you being quirkless was actually a good thing, since it means that you are probably not going to suddenly drop dead at the age of twenty. But also you’re probably going to be the last user of OFA for that very same reason.” Deku is all “that is wild. I’m just gonna stand here and stare at my hand.” Nana is all “so now that that’s settled could you please do me a small favor and kill my grandson for me”, because having just one topic to discourse about this week WASN’T ENOUGH, apparently.
