DeSantis orders Florida resources to stop Haitian migrants
Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, anticipating what his office called the “possibility for invasion,” ordered more than 250 law enforcement officers and soldiers to the Florida Keys on Wednesday to stop Haitian migrants fleeing violence.
nearly two people deployed for every Haitian migrant who has been repatriated by the U.S. Coast Guard in the last five months.

California Governor Passes on Groundbreaking SEMA-Sponsored Zero-Emission Aftermarket Conversion Project
California Governor Passes on Groundbreaking SEMA-Sponsored Zero-Emission Aftermarket Conversion Project
SEMA — the Specialty Equipment Market Association — is deeply disappointed that California’s Senate Bill (SB) 301, legislation aimed at incentivizing the conversion of gas and diesel-powered cars into Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs), was vetoed by California Governor Gavin Newsom. Authored by California Senator Anthony Portantino, SB 301 sought to establish the groundbreaking Zero-Emission…

OP I need you to know that I just cycled through all four stages of grief as I tried to figure out how I could have possibly forgotten that Chewie was apparently a mayor on Kashyyyk at some point??? before I realized you were talking about Lando instead. My gods don't do that to people! If you're taking the five of them down to four, you need to clarify which one you're leaving out oh my gods my heart can't take this sort of thing.
you ever think about how in star wars the four heroes that overthrew the tyrannical empire and inagurated a new government are the princess of a tragically destroyed planet, a wisecracking rogue, the last heir of a religious order of wizards who do actual literal magic, and.........a city mayor

"For years, California was slated to undertake the world’s largest dam removal project in order to free the Klamath River to flow as it had done for thousands of years.
Now, as the project nears completion, imagery is percolating out of Klamath showing the waterway’s dramatic transformation, and they are breathtaking to behold.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Klamath River flows freely, after Copco-2 dam was removed in California.
Incredibly, the project has been nearly completed on schedule and under budget, and recently concluded with the removal of two dams, Iron Gate and Copco 1. Small “cofferdams” which helped divert water for the main dams’ construction, still need to be removed.
The river, along which salmon and trout had migrated and bred for centuries, can flow freely between Lake Ewauna in Klamath Falls, Oregon, to the Pacific Ocean for the first time since the dams were constructed between 1903 and 1962.
“This is a monumental achievement—not just for the Klamath River but for our entire state, nation, and planet,” Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “By taking down these outdated dams, we are giving salmon and other species a chance to thrive once again, while also restoring an essential lifeline for tribal communities who have long depended on the health of the river.”
“We had a really incredible moment to share with tribes as we watched the final cofferdams be broken,” Ren Brownell, Klamath River Renewal Corp. public information officer, told SFGATE. “So we’ve officially returned the river to its historic channel at all the dam sites. But the work continues.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured: Iron Gate Dam, before and after.
“The dams that have divided the basin are now gone and the river is free,” Frankie Myers, vice chairman of the Yurok Tribe, said in a tribal news release from late August. “Our sacred duty to our children, our ancestors, and for ourselves, is to take care of the river, and today’s events represent a fulfillment of that obligation.”
The Yurok Tribe has lived along the Klamath River forever, and it was they who led the decades-long campaign to dismantle the dams.
At first the water was turbid, brown, murky, and filled with dead algae—discharges from riverside sediment deposits and reservoir drainage. However, Brownell said the water quality will improve over a short time span as the river normalizes.
“I think in September, we may have some Chinook salmon and steelhead moseying upstream and checking things out for the first time in over 60 years,” said Bob Pagliuco, a marine habitat resource specialist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in July.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured: JC Boyle Dam, before and after.
“Based on what I’ve seen and what I know these fish can do, I think they will start occupying these habitats immediately. There won’t be any great numbers at first, but within several generations—10 to 15 years—new populations will be established.”
Ironically, a news release from the NOAA states that the simplification of the Klamath River by way of the dams actually made it harder for salmon and steelhead to survive and adapt to climate change.
“When you simplify the habitat as we did with the dams, salmon can’t express the full range of their life-history diversity,” said NOAA Research Fisheries Biologist Tommy Williams.
“The Klamath watershed is very prone to disturbance. The environment throughout the historical range of Pacific salmon and steelhead is very dynamic. We have fires, floods, earthquakes, you name it. These fish not only deal with it well, it’s required for their survival by allowing the expression of the full range of their diversity. It challenges them. Through this, they develop this capacity to deal with environmental changes.”

Imagine knowing you have only hours left in a place you once called refuge—because the bombs are coming. Imagine being told you have to flee again, this time with just a mattress and a few clothes, to find a sliver of sand near the sea where thousands of other displaced families have already pitched makeshift tents. You're only 200 meters from a declared evacuation zone, and every moment that passes feels like a deadly countdown. There is no safety, no certainty—only the urgent need to survive one more day with your children.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Hossam Al-Qazzaz, his wife Hanan, and their four young children (Bashar, Hani, Diana, and baby Habiba) have been displaced again and again. For months they have endured bombardments, lived in a fragile tent, survived on scraps, and risked their lives just to secure the resources they need in order to survive. Recently, Hossam described navigating chaos and gunfire just to reach a foreign aid center—leaving at 2 a.m., dodging bullets, watching others die for food.
Now, what little fragile stability they have is crumbling again.

Hossam and his family are just 200 meters from the evacuation zone. Israeli forces have ordered mass evacuations in Khan Younis. With nowhere else to go, Hossam walked to the beach to scout a small patch of ground between the tents of other displaced families. He will move his wife and children there—closer to the sea, and further from any known safety.
“We’re being cornered,” Hossam wrote to us. "They’re pushing us all into a narrow strip on the coast.”
This is not just a crisis. It is a relentless and systemic stripping away of dignity, shelter, food, and hope.
Please pray for Hossam and his family. Please share. And if you’re able, please donate to help them survive another forced displacement. Your help may be the only lifeline left.
You can donate to the Al-Qazzaz family's campaign here:
We also are sponsoring a Chuffed campaign to assist the family with evacuating, and rebuilding their lives when possible:

Combine this with Trump’s attacks on higher education — his gutting the funding of the National Institutes of Health (which provides a large portion of biomedical research) and the National Science Foundation (engineering and computer research) and his effective closure of USAID (which underwrites research in global diseases). Put this together with Trump’s attacks on the freedom of speech of university students and professors. And with Trump’s (and RFK Jr.’s) attacks on vaccine science. With Trump’s and right-wing governors’ attacks on teaching the truth in our schools about America’s history of slavery and Native American genocide. Combine this with Trump’s attack on America’s libraries — last week’s executive order mandating cuts in the funding of libraries around the country — which will jeopardize literacy development and reading programs, reliable internet access for those without it at home, and homework help and other resources for students and educators. And his attacks on America’s museums (the same executive order cut their funding, too). And his attack on the arts, as illustrated by Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center (last month, he announced himself its new chair, replaced 13 board members, and inserted a new interim president). What’s the larger picture? Not an “attack on the liberal state,” as I keep reading. Not “the culmination of Trump’s culture wars.” Certainly not that Trump is seeking “small government” over “big government” or advancing traditional conservatism over traditional liberalism. What’s really occurring is an attack on the American mind.

Some good things happening at the local level: Land Back edition
Tumblr media
The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians purchased back 2,000 acres of deeply historically significant land in Oregon, the site of both a massacre of Native people at the hands of the US army, and the site of a treaty signing that established a temporary truce and reservation. (Posted Jan 21, 2025)
The property was purchased directly from the previous landowner. The Nature Conservancy preserves a conservation easement on the land. The Siletz will continue to work closely with the Nature Conservancy and the BLM across the properties in the region to emphasize conservation and restoration. “To me, land back means, in its purest form, its return of lands to a tribe,” Kentta [citizen of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and the tribal council treasurer] said. “This is through purchase, and a significant amount paid out for the purchase. So for us, that is regaining of land back, but it's not a settlement or apology for things that happened in the past.”
The Tule River Tribe in California is moving forward with a plan to buy back 14,673 acres of rivers, forests, ranchland, and wetland in a conservation project partnering with The Conservation Fund, the Wildlife Conservation Board, and various California conservation organizations. It's set to move into Tule River control (or at least co-management? unclear to me) sometime this year. (Posted January 8, updated January 10, 2025)
Charmaine McDarment, chairwoman of the Tule River Tribal Council, said in a press release that the tribe appreciates help in restoring ancestral homelands. “As the climate crisis brings new pressures to address the effects of environmental mismanagement and resource degradation, the Tribe’s partnership with WCB is an important example of building relationships based in collaboration and trust. “The tribe remains committed to supporting co-stewardship efforts and fighting to ensure that disproportionate harms to Native American lands, culture, and resources are resolved in a manner that centers and honors Native American connections to ancestral lands.”
Illinois lawmakers voted to move Shabbona Lake State Park to the management of The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.  The Illinois governor has a lot on his plate right now, but is expected to sign the bill into law. (Posted January 14, 2025)
The state House approved SB 867, which would transfer Shabbona Lake State Park to the Prairie Band Potawatomi. The bill now heads to Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker for his signature.  The land transfer hinges on an agreement that the tribe continue to operate the property as a park, still open to the public. Final details will be established in a forthcoming land management agreement between the state and tribe.  Prairie Band Potawatomi Chairman Joseph “Zeke” Rupnick said the bill’s passage was a “meaningful step” toward righting a historic old wrong. The land was originally part of the tribe's 1,280-acre reservation in northern Illinois. During Chief Shab-eh-nay's visit to family in Kansas, the land was unlawfully auctioned off, violating federal requirements for Congressional approval of tribal land sales. The tribe has sought to reclaim the land for nearly two centuries.
A Wabanaki food sovereignty group secured a no-strings-attached land deal to buy 245 acres of farm and forest in Maine, to focus on local, traditional, and sustainable foods. (Posted January 19, 2025)
What sets this purchase apart is that the land transfer comes without conservation easements. These easements, which frequently accompany land returns or transfers, are often well-meaning. However, they can inhibit Indigenous stewardship by preventing practices such as prescribed burning, subdivision, or particular kinds of zoning for buildings or infrastructure.  A coalition of 12 organizations and several private donors helped secure the land for Niweskok [a nonprofit collective of Wabanaki farmers, health professionals, and educators] without easements, giving the Wabanaki nonprofit sovereignty over the property, according to Heather Rogers, Land Protection Program director for Coastal Mountain Land Trust. Her organization has helped finance the Goose River purchase through fundraising and advocacy efforts.  “The land trusts had to approach it with humility - there are other ways to care for land that can end up with better outcomes, and I think we have all come to that realization,” Rogers said. “I think now that we've done it once, I think we would be open to doing it again that way.”
Conservation, food sovereignty, water management - a few hundred acres here, a thousand acres there, there is movement to put lands back in tribal control, which is a human rights win as well as an ecology/conservation one.  This is mostly happening at state and even private levels, and is something to continue advocating for, pushing for, donating to, and finding out if you have any local movements advocating for this kind of thing near you and calling state-level lawmakers and representatives about.

How do proposed staffing cuts to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife affect the ocean you love?
Tumblr media
“California’s wildlife and ocean health depend on a strong, well-resourced California Department of Fish and Wildlife. At the Monterey Bay Aquarium, we’ve worked closely with CDFW on marine protected areas, permitting, and protecting ocean ecosystems and wildlife. These proposed staffing cuts would undermine critical science, habitat management, permitting, and enforcement needs. We urge the California legislature and Governor Newsom to protect CDFW’s capacity—and thank Senator Blakespear and Assemblymember Damon Connolly for standing up for our wildlife and ecosystems.”

The vast majority of the world is unaware of the true cost of clean marine fuels. It's an industry built on a carefully constructed illusion, one that most people never see past. But I know the dirty facts, because I'm the one who's been cleaning up their messes for years. There's a reason the big oil companies are so interested in renewables, and it's not because they care about the environment. It's because they know that the sooner renewables become mainstream, the sooner the dirty truth about clean marine fuels will be exposed. It's a sham, a way to clean up their image and make a quick buck. But I'm not going to let them get away with it. I'm going to blow the whistle on their dirty little secret.

Don't just protest, remember to VOTE!
Yesterday's Hands Off protests were great, thousands of people in thousands of cities and towns across America turned out to wave flags and signs and chant and generally say "fuck this, fuck Trump!" Which is lovely. However it's just one step, if those people don't organize and show up to vote it'll be sound and fury representing nothing. And you don't even have to wait till next year to vote to show Trump, Musk, and the Republicans what you think of them, there are important elections this year, some in the coming days!
Virginia
Virginia will be the single biggest test of Trump's popularity and the biggest chance any group of people in 2025 have to reject him. Right now all 3 of Virginia's statewide offices, Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General are Republicans and that is a disaster. As Musk is laying waste to the federal workforce thousands of whom live in Virginia their governor is cheering not fighting back. This November is a chance to change that
Governor
Former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger is the Democratic nominee. Spanberger flipped a red seat in 2018 and defended it in 2020 and 2022 in some of the toughest races for Democrats, a consistent critic of Trump, a supporter of pro-choice, and LGBT rights she has campaigned hard against Trump's mass firing of federal workers. The Republican his current Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears who refers to herself as "Trump in Heels" if Earle-Sears is elected Virginia will get one of the most Trumpy and crazy governors in America.
So if you're in Virginia make sure to vote, of course, but if you went out protesting Yesterday, get your ass in gear and volunteer to take your state back, and anyone anywhere can donate this is most likely the most important race in the nation this year.
Attorney General
Across America Democratic Attorneys General have sued the Trump administration over its illegal and insane orders, and won. But the emergency injections pausing Trump's orders, including the mass firings of workers only apply to states that sue. Since Virginia's AG is a Republican federal workers living in Virginia unlike Maryland or DC have NO voice in court. Indeed Republican AGs including Virginia's Jason Miyares are filing briefs supporting Trump in court. If every day Virginians want a voice in court against Trump, want emergency court orders to apply to them not just their neighbors, they need to WIN this.
the Democratic nominee is likely to be Jay Jones, a former state rep and candidate in 2021, If you're in Virginia sign up to help him today, if you're anywhere in America and care about fighting Trump in give him a dollar
Lieutenant Governor
Virginia's Lt. Governor is a lot like a Vice President, doesn't do a lot, but like a Vice-President its a set up to be governor, Virginia governors Douglas Wilder, Tim Kaine, and Ralph Northam were all Lt. Governor and of course the current Republican Lt. Governor is trying to use it to launch herself into the Governor's office. Also winning all 3 statewide races would send the clearest anti-Trump anti-Republican message. There are a number of people running check them out and figure out who you like
Ghazala Hashmi Babur Lateef Aaron Rouse Levar Stoney
Virginia State House
All 100 seats in Virginia's House of Delegates are up for election. In 2017 Democrats holding onto the Governor's seat was a big deal, but flipping 15 seats in the State House even in deep red territory was the first big sign that Democrats were on the march against Trump. Today Dems hold a narrow 51-49 majority in the State House and defending and expanding that is so important. A strong majority will allow a Governor Spanberger to marshal the resources of the state to combat the damage Trump is doing, and send a clear message that Virginia is fed up. I believe there's a Democrat running in all 100 districts, so if you live in Virginia sign up to help
If you live in Virginia, or in Maryland, DC, Delaware, southern Pennsylvania, the border areas of West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, or North Carolina, please please PLEASE some time before November give a weekend of your time to Volunteer knocking doors and wherever you live in America you can phone bank and donate nation wide mobilization made all the difference against Musk's sea of money in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race
New Jersey
Governor
Like Virginia New Jersey has a statewide election this year. Lots of people think of New Jersey as a blue state, but it wasn't that long ago that sometime Trump friend and whipping boy Chris Christie was governor, and in 2021 Democrat Phil Murphy was only narrowly re-elected so New Jersey take it Seriously! A Republican Governor would empower Trump, and work in lock step with him to hurt people in New Jersey particularly trans people, but really teachers, federal workers, racial minorities, women, immigrants etc this is too important to sit out or sleep walk through. There are a number of candidates so please sign up now to volunteer for the nominee when thats decided in June. And check out the candidates maybe there's someone you feel strongly about volunteering in the primary
Ras Baraka Steven Fulop Josh Gottheimer Mikie Sherrill Sean Spiller Stephen Sweeney
State House
Like Virginia New Jersey's state House is up for re-election, all 80 seats. Democrats are running in every single district and if you're in New Jersey please please sign up to help them
Electing a Democrat by a strong margin and growing the Democratic majority in the State General Assembly will send a strong message and better enable New Jersey to resist Trump and mitigate the damage. So if you're in New Jersey don't make the mistake America did and sleep walk through this election, Volunteer get involved Donate and for everyone outside of New Jersey if you know anyone in the state, friends, family etc call them, text them check that they know whats up.
Pennsylvania
Supreme Court Retention Election
Supreme Court Justices in Pennsylvania are elected to ten year terms and when a term is up face and up or down vote, a retention vote, on if the voters want them to have another 10 year term or to call a special election to replace them. This year 3 Democrats on the court face retention elections and like in Wisconsin Elon Musk will pour money into these races like water to try to unseat the Democrats and then elect Republicans in the special elections that follow. If Musk were to be successful, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court would flip from Democratic to Republican control. This would put abortion rights and LGBT rights on the chopping block. In 2020-21 the PA Supreme Court proved a key stop to Trump's attempts to steal that election and a Republican majority paid for by Musk would likely roll over for Republican fraud claims.
The Democrats are

Kevin Dougherty Volunteer Donate
David Wecht Volunteer Donate
Mississippi
Redistricting elections
10 State Senate and 5 State House elections are going to be held in Mississippi in November after a federal court ruled that the state was illegally discriminating against black voters and needed to increase the number of black majority districts in the state. A lot of people discount Mississippi as a deep red state, and it is, but in 2019 and 2023 Democrats Jim Hood and Brandon Presley got amazingly close to winning the Governorship, Republican Tate Reeves is literally the least popular governor in America. Even in Mississippi Republicans are in trouble and if you live down there you can get in some Good Trouble. So Volunteer with the Mississippi Democrats
US House Special Elections
The two House special elections in Florida got a lot of attention but there are two more coming up. They're both in deep blue districts but strong turnout and wider than normal margins send a message and getting involved now is good practice for the future
Arizona's 7th
Called to fill Congressman Raúl Grijalva seat after Grijalva passed away last month it'll be held on September 23, 2025. I normally wouldn't endorse but someone I've followed and liked for a long time is in the race, Daniel Hernández a Mexican-Jewish American, former state rep, former aid to Congresswoman Gabby Giffords who saved her life during the 2011 shooting, he's a good egg, if you're in Arizona please support him
Texas 18th
Texas 18th needs a new Congressperson after Freshman Congressman and former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner passed away after just a month on the job. Turner himself stepped in to replace Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee after she passed away in late 2024 after already being re-nominated for the seat. Since it's a safe blue seat thats largely black and hispanic Republican Governor Greg Abbot is just refusing to call a special election, with House Democrats and Texas Democrats threatening to sue if he doesn't soon. Any ways I also have a candidate I've followed for a long time, 26 year old Isaiah Martin, who was a senior aid to Congresswoman Jackson Lee and briefly ran for the seat before Jackson Lee decided to run for re-election. He's a loud voice attacking Trump and is running an aggressive campaign all about standing up to Trump and bring the fight to the Republicans, Please Support Him
State Special Elections
there are state legislative special elections coming up in 15 states and some as early as this month!
Alabama
California
Connecticut
Florida
Georgia
Iowa
Massachusetts
Michigan
Minnesota
Missouri
New Hampshire
New York
Oklahoma
South Carolina
Washington
Finally wherever you are there is almost certainly a city, town, county election going on many states hold those elections at weird times in June or September check out Run For Something for young first time progressives running for local office near you

THE TUNNELS
The conspiracy is MASSIVE.
CEO of State Farm & other Insurance companies, Los Angeles Fire Chief, LA Mayor Karen Bass, even CA Governor Gavin Newsom.
Want to know how it all connects?
This conspiracy is related to the other land grabs of Maui & Asheville, however this is no typical land grab.
Well placed sources have said that they are actually being used to destroy the child trafficking tunnels under the Pacific Palisades, all the way to the Playboy Mansion, before Trump gets into office.
Don’t believe there are underground tunnels where children are trafficked?
Sound unrealistic?
Fake?
Research Ally Carter.
Notice how the worst people in the world just got the Medal of Freedom?
It all connects to this.
They were all part of the last 4 years of death, destruction and yes, the big money maker (as well as use for Satanic rituals), child trafficking.
The Medals were given to these people as a way to help legitimize them before Trump gets into office. That way if they’re prosecuted, they’re gonna play up the Medal winner angle. Even the players you didn’t know about, like Denzel, were named. Again, ask Ally Carter.
The plan to destroy the tunnels all started months ago when Gov. Newsom purposely caused a water shortage by diverting water resources into the ocean & “mismanaging” the forestry service to keep the brush in as a way to exacerbate the fires.
At the same time, LA Mayor Karen Bass cut the LA Fire Dept. budget by $17.6 million.
After the water shortage was created & fire budget slashed, no water was coming out of the fire hydrants & firefighters were laid off.
That means no water & no firefighters, as many were laid off before that due to not getting the Covid vaccine.
Once those things were in place, they had the LA Fire Chief prioritize DEI, making sure if any firefighters were hired, they weren’t equipped to handle the job.
Right before the fires started, insurance companies such as State Farm cancelled the policies of homeowners all over LA.
This is to make sure that the tunnels are destroyed & nothing is found in insurance investigations as well as allowing others to come in & “buyout” the land since people can’t rebuild.
They will force them to sell to their friends, protect the secret. The conspiracy goes deep & it DOES NOT take thousands. It only takes a few in well placed positions.
Anyone that wants to dig, I recommend this rabbit hole. Just know that once you learn some of the sinister things lurking below your feet, you can’t unlearn it.
Proceed with caution.

I shouldn't be surprised that people are sharing AI-generated images and videos of the ongoing fires in and around LA. How fucked.
As I mentioned in my recent reblog, please remind people around you not to spread misinformation. Get your updates from Watch Duty or CAL FIRE. I also find national sources to be lacking, so I'd recommend checking local sources like LAist instead.
@archaiclumina also shared an article from ABC News Australia breaking down SoCal weather events like the Santa Ana winds, the increasingly devastating wildfires, and the role climate change has played.
Thankfully, the current admin has approved FEMA assistance already, as the other side is busy attacking a lesbian fire chief, Crowley, and the state governor, Newsom.
Don't be misled. We are here because of greed, and the billionaires who hoard basic resources will see the world burn and all of us bled dry before they develop an ounce of goodwill (see: the Resnicks, wealthiest farmers in the US). No matter which billionaire is yapping or what they're saying, do not forget that billionaires are not on our side.
Demand more from the wealthy. Demand more from the government.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you all know anyone who is in need of resources because of the ongoing fires, please check out Mutual Aid LA Network or @/mutualaidla on socials.
The official COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES website also has lists of shelters for people and animals, as well as important alerts.
For folks who'd like to donate money, consider the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation.
In times of crisis, we can only truly rely on each other.
