Caine's design was mostly an accident. In the scrapped initial intro animatic for this AU, he had a placeholder design until I could finalize him when I went to clean up the frames

which became this, then this, then...

He literally got designed as the animatic went on, the coat on shoulders was a subconscious approach because I blame One Piece for making me a coat-on-shoulders whore. His final coat design is mostly taken from my own oc lol

up to this point, I had no idea how he would've been colored until I did this shitpost

Pomni's is weird too

She was partially inspired by both the Circus breach crack idea, Pauline from my Unexpected Reunion AU, and Mystery!Pomni because I do love women (in suits)

so if Caine was designed overtime within an animatic, Pomni's design spanned fucking AUs-

Ragatha was literally just me thinking, "hm. what if. hear me out. maid. but tattered skirt cus puppet revolution time"

this is her VERY first appearance and it hasn't changed much since leave me alone let me enjoy women being gay

Now, Kingr is actually the closest ANY design in this AU would come to it's base inspiration Lies of P, because AUGH King of Puppets my beloved

He started as a boss design from the get go then reverse engineered to look more friendly, because by the time I was designing him, I was already incorporating the idea of Pomni having to fight bosses so she could free them from these insane forms of theirs

This idea was recycled from my other AU for fnaf btw, the Eternal Eclipse AU where Freddy has to free the other Glamrocks from their "Primal forms" by fighting them WITH THE POWER OF ROCK AND ROLLLLLLLLLL (which are GIGANTIC and INSANE, sound familiar yet?)

back to the rest, I actually didn't really know what I wanted for Jax, aside from a Cheshire Cat motif from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland because love that mofo and Jax's constant smile reminds me of him

I guess that's why his initial design was so unnecessarily cluttered and so hard to draw, because all I knew was that I wanted it to be loose, flowy, bouncy and airy, like an actual cartoon. But, still respecting the laws of reality somewhat

and then I had to switch the outfit out, because at around this time, The Patriarch's design was finalized, and I didn't want people to start to think Jax was associated with him purely due to similar palettes. So I sneakily swapped it out with an explorer's outfit (since I was thinking of Jax as the team's scout), and tried to play it off as simply a "oh it was hard to draw"

He was even supposed to have goggles in the newer design, but I scrapped it because I'm repeating the same mistake of making him too cluttered again.

Z is a pretty straightforward one, although they diverged from the initial idea. My first thought was making them a brawler of sorts because they were initially going to be Pomni's training buddy, so I looked up "Victorian brawler" and yoinked the outfit I liked.

The concept of Z being the training dummy was then recycled to be Kingr's role instead because Kingr was more of a tank character than Z, and in turn, she became the weaponsmith

Each part of Z was also inspired by something that randomly came to mind when I was trying to wrack my brain with what parts should they have:

the hook peg is from Hiccup, the other peg is from A series of Unfortunate Events, the antler is a reference to Mystery!Zooble but combined with the Minecraft Warden's palette, spiked chokers were taken from my own sona's eel tongue. The flexible arms are very much Doc ock

Gangle... She was the hardest to design that my brain is blocking me from remembering the process because it was so traumatizing /j

I just know that like Caine, her design was also mostly an accident. Iirc, she wasn't meant to have cat ears/motif in the first place, but after I finished the mask with the <:3 face I went like "fuck it we ball" and went furry mode

I think she was also meant to have painted whiskers, and the only reason why she doesn't is I forgor 💀

There was no inspo for her outfit except maybe Disney Cinderella because I was only putting what worked and discarded what didn't (not recommended)

The double ribbon arms was literally just me thinking the ends are her little fingies, and her "feet" is just me wanting to make her ribbons look like a part of her dress and looking flowy because ew feet

anyways if you can't tell, there's a pattern here: recycle ideas, take inspo, look it up or fuck it we ball when all else fails lol

the lesson here is to not follow in my footsteps because I keep stepping on shit /lh

@itsnotamatterofif and I have been talking a lot abt my fankids, especially Finch... the moment I saw this tiktok i had to draw them. Embarassing amnt of dadra lore under the cut.

Hydra's like, 20ish here and Finch is maybe 6-8 months. This is set (with consent) a year and change after Pebs' excellent fic, and it was meant to be a shitpost but i got SO fuckin emo about it while drawing it.

Finch is a hydrogen-electric bimode, and she's a born trainlet- born at a gestational age that would be nearly 10 weeks early, were they human. Her care costs were waived in exchange for her intellectual property rights; when she's old enough, her design will be reverse-engineered by the company that supported her and used as a basis for production models.

Hydra is technically on staff with them- trainlets need caregivers, and he's willing to do that work for room and board and a (very) small stipend. It's a win win, he gets to hang out with this awesome little guy he made without home base breathing down his neck, and they get someone looking after her until she's developed enough to start testing.

And I'm just... This is probably the first time he's been out since she was born, you know? The first time he's gotten properly dolled up for sure. No way marketing would let him out like that; he's making his body his own again. And he's got Finch a kinda-matchy hoodie so she won't get cold, and put her 0.2 strands of hair into wee bunches so they're both all dressed up. He had leftover stick-on gems so he gave her some so she could feel pretty too.

And he's happy, and he's trying, and things are finally getting better.

And his baby's gonna get to enjoy a rave.

FFXIVWrite 2024 (Day 1) - Steer

Hey! AO3 is down but I wanted to get this out there so I could submit it. I'll upload a proper AO3 mirror to this when it gets back up, but hopefully this will get me into the habit of posting for the rest of the month too! Enjoy a month of Riida lore building and shitposting!

Other projects and updates I mentioned before will be on hold this month so I can focus on FFXIVWrite, but rest assured they're coming!

(This prompt takes place Post-Endwalker but Pre-Dawntrail. It's barely mentioned but wanna put it out there just in case)

While it was very thoughtful of Cid and the Ironworks crew to lend her a replica of the mysterious mount Noctis was first seen with, it would’ve been very generous of them if they provided instructions on how to bloody handle this thing!

Riida regretted not prodding further when Cid mentioned he added a few…’modifications’ to make this hot rod an Ironworks Original (trademark pending), because her heart almost sent her to the Lifestream when she nearly fell off a cliff trying to get this thing to stop only to discover it can fly! Now she’s stuck in the air and unable to control this mechanical beast! Why does this thing have six pedals when there are only four directions? 

Sure, the Warrior of Light had queer modes of transportation a plenty, but more often than not they were often mounts of the organic type. The living, breathing ones that have been tamed by a trained professional before being trusted by folks like her. Hells, she’s even had to tame her own chocobo back when she used to race them for a quick gil. Maybe the reason she’s having this much trouble is because this thing’s mostly magitek, or has similar properties to it. The engineers at Ironworks did their best to reverse-engineer it or whatever they called it, Riida won’t deny that, but they really should’ve given her a bone before rushing into researching the next project that caught their interest.  

She slammed her head against the driver’s wheel in defeat, flinching a little bit at the unexpected beep of the car horn. “Oh Noctis,” She lamented. “I’m so sorry we made a monstrosity out of the Regalia. Please come back soon and teach me how to handle this gods damned thing properly.” 

It’s a good thing that no pressing matters are waiting for her any time soon after she and her companions saved the star, but if worse comes to worse she could just risk jumping overboard and deal with it later.

She’s not that far up…right? The cliff she ran off of is just a few yalms away behind her. Could she reach it with a good Shukuchi?

How To Use AI To Fake A Scandal For Fun, Profit, and Clout

Or, I Just Saw People I Know To Be Reasonable Fall For A Fake "Ripoff" And Now I'm Going To Gently Demonstrate What Really Happened

So, we all know what people say about AI. It's just an automatic collage machine, it's stealing your data (as if the rest of the mainstream internet isn't - seriously, we should be using that knee-jerk disgust response to demand better internet privacy laws rather than try to beef up copyright so that compliance has to come at the beginning rather than the end of the process and you can be sued on suspicion of referencing, but I digress...), it can't create anything novel, some people go so far as to claim it's not even synthesizing anything, but just acting as a search engine and returning something run through a filter and "proving" it by "searching" for their own art and "finding" it.

And those are blatant lies.

The thing is, the reason AI is such a breakthrough - and the reason we memed with it so hard when DALL-E Mini and DALL-E 2 first dropped - is because it CAN create novel output. Because it CAN visualize the absurd ideas that no one has ever posted to the internet before. In fact, it would be a bigger breakthrough in computer science if we DID come up with an automatic collage machine - something that knows where to cut out a part of one image and paste it onto another, then smooth out the lighting and colors to make them fairly consistent, to make it look like what we would recognize as an image we're asking for? That would make the denoising algorithm on steroids that a diffusion model is look like child's play.

But, unlike the posts that claim that they're just acting as a collage maker at best and a search engine at worst, I'm not going to ask you to take my word for it (and stick a pin in this point, we'll come back to it later). I'm going to ask you to go to Simple Stable (or Craiyon, or the Karlo demo, if Google Colab feels too complicated for you - or if you like, do all of the above) and throw in a shitpost prompt or two. Ask for a velociraptor carousel pony ridden by a bunny. Ask for Godzilla fighting a wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man. Ask for an oil painting of a capybara wearing an ornate princess gown. Shitpost with it like we did before these myths took hold.

Now take your favorite result(s) and reverse image search them. Did you get anything remotely similar to your generated image? Probably not!

So then, how did someone end up getting a near perfect recreation of their work? Was that just some kind of wacky, one-in-a-million coincidence?

Well - oh no, look at that, I asked it for a simplistic character drawing and it happened to me too, it just returned a drawing of mine that I never even uploaded, and it's the worst drawing I've done since the fifth grade even just to embarrass me! Oh no, what happened, did they change things right under my nose, has digital surveillance gotten even WORSE?? Look, see, here's the original on the left, compare it to the output on the right - scary!! They're training on the contents of your computer in real time now, aaaagh!!

Except, of course, for the fact that the entire paragraph above was a lie and I did this on purpose in a way no one could possibly recreate from a text prompt, even with a perfect description.

How?

See, some models have this nifty little function called img2img. It can be used for anything from guiding the composition of your final image with a roughly drawn layout, to turning a building into a dragon...to post-processing of a hand-drawn image, to blatantly fucking lying about how AI works.

I took 5 minutes out of my day to crudely draw a character. I uploaded the image to this post. I saved the post as a draft. I stuck the image URL in the init_image field in Simple Stable, cranked the init strength up to 0.8, cleared all text prompts, and ran it. It did exactly what I told it to and tried to lightly refine the image I gave it.

If you see someone claiming that an AI stole their image with this kind of "proof", and the image they're comparing is not ITSELF a parody of an extremely well-known piece such as the Mona Lisa, or just so extremely generic that the level of similarity could be a coincidence (you/your favorite artist do/es not own the rule of thirds or basic fantasy creatures, just to name one family of example I've seen), this is what happened.

So from here you must realize that it is deeply insidious that posts that make these claims usually imply or even outright state that you should NOT try to recreate this but instead just take their word for it, stressing ~DON'T FEED THE MACHINE~. It's always some claim about "ohhh, the more you use them, the more they learn, I made a SACRIFICE so you don't have to" - but txt2img functions can't use your interaction to learn jack shit. There's no new information in a text prompt for them TO learn. Most img2img models can't learn from your input either, for that matter! I still recommend being careful about corporate img2img toys - we know that Facebook, for instance, is happy to try and beef up facial recognition for the WORST possible reasons - but if you're worried about your privacy and data harvesting, any given txt2img model is one of the least worrying things on the internet today.

So do be careful with your privacy online, and PLEASE use your very understandable knee-jerk horror response to how much extremely personal content can be found in training databases as a call to DEMAND better privacy laws ("do not track" should not be just for show ffs) and compliance with security protocols in fields that deal with very private information (COMMON CRAWL DOESN'T GO FAR OUT OF ITS WAY, IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET ANY MEDICAL IMAGES THE PATIENTS DIDN'T SHARE THEMSELVES HOLY SHIT, SOME HOSPITAL WORKERS AND/OR MEDICAL COMMUNICATIONS DEVELOPERS BETTER BE GETTING FIRED AND/OR SUED) - but don't just believe a convenient and easy-to-disprove lie because it aligns with that feeling.

What do you think makes music good or bad? How do you objectively judge music?

Okay after this its more shitposts - Music and art is subjective and objective all at once. It's objective because at the basis of music and art is pattern recognition, however as patterns become more complex and the way music/art is made, it branches out and iterates like a complex family tree, there grows more and more subjectivity, based mostly on ones culture. Tonality is the most subjective part in music, if you were raised to listen to nails on chalkboard for your formative years and everyone around you said how great it sounds, you would be conditioned into thinking nails on chalkboards is a banger.

That being said, through reverse-engineering, there are some standardized qualities to music that even other arts don't have, up to a point where we can calculate the psychological and physical effects of certain pure sounds. Though painting is based on paint on canvas, sound is directly interactive with our body in a more substantial way, sound is simply the vibrations of air around us, there is a science to their effect. How we interpret this sound is where the artistry comes from and why judgement is subjective from an artistic front. But again, on an influential side of things, there are some more objective ways to measure ones relevance, both culturally and sonically, as we can see how an artist may have influenced the next movement in music, thus the family tree grows.

Let's ignore Jack Slash's trigger event, which was specific to the weirder aspects of his power more than the "slash from long distance" thing, and reverse engineer a trigger event for long-range biting.

Of course, the first place I check is a document Wildbow made for Weaver Dice. Unsurprisingly, most Blaster categories don't fit.

Damage? Maybe, but it's vague.

Ruin, Impact? Most people don't have big enough mouths for that.

Barrage? Most people can't bite that fast.

Accuracy, Effect, Conditional? We might be able to impose that.

Range, Versatile? We might impose that kind of effect on it, but it would be weird.

Object, Beam, Enchantment? Completely off-topic.

So let's go straight for the jugular. Why teeth?

The ‘element’ of the blaster shot can vary wildly, and covers the spectrum. The blaster power may borrow from ideas in the surroundings, or from emotional state, themes, or personality traits.

Let's take this a step away from literal teeth. Teeth are tools for consumption, so perhaps the trigger event involves fear of being devoured, literally or metaphorically.

On a related note, why the parahuman's teeth? Why does the power let Mike bite people from far away, instead of letting him shoot shrapnel fangs or something?

Perhaps part of the trigger is being reduced to a primal state, barely more than an animal. Which sounds a lot like a sense trigger, which is something that shouldn't be hard to work in. Either way, this sounds more literal devouring than figurative...

Okay, I think I've got an idea.

An Actual Trigger Event for the Shitpost Biting Cape

Mike's on a transpacific flight which crashes. He and one of the other passengers (let's call him Donner) wash up on a deserted island. It's big enough that they have room, rugged enough that they both have shelter, and has a freshwater spring...but there's not much food.

After a few days, they've set up a big signal fire in the clearest, dryest part of the island, and put all the vaguely flammable plant material available into it. They also ate all the edible-looking roots and a clutch of bird eggs Donner found. Donner joked about resorting to cannibalism.

Attempts to get more food fail. Birds are hard to catch without tools. Surprisingly, fish are even harder. Neither Mike nor Donner knows how to make a fishing spear from sticks and rocks, and anyways they stuck most of the sticks in the bonfire. They just have to hope that they get rescued before they starve. Each of them hunkers down in their nook of choice, leaving only to tend the fire, get water, or use the latrine.

Mike is ravenous, and he knows Donner must be, too. Mike thinks back to the jokes Donner made about cannibalism. He thinks about what the best way for one of them to kill and eat the other would be, and decides on an ambush at the spring, hiding behind a boulder. So he just hides in his nook.

After a day of this, he can't take it any more and goes to get a drink. But as he starts drinking, he hears a noise from behind the boulder.

Is this the best trigger event?

Nah, probably not. But it's the first one I thought of, and I decided to post it and move on. I'd like to hear other people's ideas, though.

My entire life I have only heard someone use the phrase "oh, joy" if they are being sarcastic. Usually in some kind of dry tone, but occasionally in an over the top fake-happy voice. My partner is the only person I've met who will say "oh, joy" and mean it sincerely. He will say it in his normal voice (montone) or sometimes in the voice he uses to better communicate to others how happy he is (still mostly monotone tbh). He very rarely says "oh, joy" and doesn't mean it, but through osmosis he has also learned to employee it sarcastically (can't stress enough this is also a very even tone)

This means that every time he says this (often) I have to directly ask him if he is actually happy about something or not. He's reverse engineering a difficulty in interpreting social cues within me, and it is downright diabolical.
