Sideways (2004, Alexander Payne)
25/02/2024
Sideways is a film by director Alexander Payne, starring Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church and based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Rex Pickett.
Miles (Paul Giamatti) is an English teacher, recently divorced from his wife. As the wedding of his university friend, actor Jack Lapote (Thomas Haden Church), approaches, the two decide to take a week off traveling in the Santa Ynez Valley wine area, in Santa Barbara County, California. Arriving in the vineyard region, Miles and Jack meet Stephanie (Sandra Oh), a wibemaker who introduces them to Maya, a close friend of hers.
Miles, irritated, returns to the hotel alone, only to be woken up in the middle of the night by Jack, naked, who confesses to him that he was caught red-handed by the woman's husband returning from work and that he fled to the motel by running six kilometers without clothes.
Miles, who is also introduced to her husband, congratulates her, but decides to forgo the reception and instead returns to her sad San Diego apartment, where she picks up her most prized bottle of wine, a 1961 Château Cheval Blanc, which he jealously guarded it, and drinks it in a plastic cup at a fast food restaurant.
The Santa Ynez Valley, where most of the film is set, has seen an increase in tourism. With the exception of Paul Giamatti, who had already starred in critically acclaimed films such as American Splendor, the film launched the careers of relatively unknown actors. Both Thomas Haden Church and Virginia Madsen received Oscar nominations. Giamatti received Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for Cinderella Man (2095). Sandra Oh, after breaking off her relationship with the film's director, Alexander Payne, starred in Grey's Anatomy, also winning a Golden Globe.
In the United States it was released in cinemas on 22 October 2004. In Italy, however, it was released on 16 February 2005.

SIDEWAYS (2004)
This is one of those movies where all of the elements that make for great cinema were perfectly aligned. I actually read the book by Rex Pickett before I saw the movie. I couldn't imagine that the movie would even come close to the quality of the book, but it did, and then some.
Paul Giamatti is just a master of his craft. One of the best. Not to take away from the entire cast - they are also top notch.
I'm a huge fan of environments - weather, time of day, backdrops, elements in a scene. Everything that can put me right there inside of the screen as though I'm living it. Sideways takes me to Solvang and Buellton. I'm right there next the buzzing of the bees on the grapes, soaking up the sun.
The screenplay is spectacular and honestly if you haven't read the book I cant recommend it enough.

No need to prepare your Draft, whether you're a beginner or experienced player, just use this list and you'll be set. In Standard Scoring Leagues you don't get points for receptions, so you will have to prioritize touchdown-heavy players. In this format, running backs are going to be a priority, so they have a slight edge over wide receiver. However, a receiving running back is also important because you have double the chance to score. If your league allows it, I would start three RBs every week. These will get you the most touchdowns besides a quarterback. So, remember to do after those red zone threats. In the end, they will make the difference when it comes to Standard Scoring formats. IT’S WEDDING DAY ON MCMURRAY RANCH IN AN ALL-NEW EPISODE OF ‘RIDE’ PREMIERING MAY 14, ON HALLMARK CHANNEL
STUDIO CITY, CA – May 8, 2023 – Things must go off without a hitch, when the McMurray Ranch hosts an expensive family wedding in “Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace,” this week’s all-new episode of “Ride” premiering Sunday, May 14 (9 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Channel. Nancy Travis (“Last Man Standing”), Tiera Skovbye (“Riverdale”), Beau Mirchoff (“Good Trouble”), Sara Garcia (“The Flash”), Jake Foy (“Designated Survivor”) and Tyler Jacob Moore (“Shameless”) star.
Gus’ (Moore) sister (Anna Hopkins, “The Expanse”) is getting married and agrees to hold the wedding at McMurray Ranch, but her parents insist that everything be perfect. Viewing this as a make-or-break business opportunity, everyone steps in to help make the big day a success. Things go awry, however, when Missy (Skovbye) and Valeria (Garcia) are left in charge of an important piece of the wedding leading Cash (Mirchoff) to step in to help. Further straining things with Gus’ family, Isabel (Travis) is blindsided by news from them that threatens to undo the stadium deal. In the midst of this, Missy is introduced to Gus’ family as his girlfriend and doesn’t get the reception she was expecting. Tuff (Foy) considers a new step in his relationship with Julian (Vasilios Filippakis, “Hudson & Rex”), but is distracted by an upsetting encounter with Tucker (Roger LeBlanc, “Joe Pickett”). Cash and Gus finally come face to face to talk through their issues, but everything comes to a sudden halt when there is a problem with the wedding... and Missy may be to blame.

Book Review: The Archivist by Rex Pickett
Book Review: The Archivist by Rex Pickett
Initially I had mixed feelings about this book. In the beginning, I felt the author was trying too hard to be literary. I frequently had to look up words in the dictionary (not that this is a bad thing, but it took me out of the story to do so).
The Archivist is a disturbing work with a great story of a twisted romance and the murder of the female in the relationship. In essence, Nadia Fontaine…

February Reads
1. Den of Vipers by K.A. Knight, 3 ⭐️
Picked this up after seeing @formulanaughty recommend it. Hot, an easy read despite being long, avoid if knives squick you out, surprisingly romantic given the premise.
2. State of Terror by Louise Penny & Hillary Clinton, 3.5 ⭐️
Yes, that Hillary Clinton. Political thrillers are usually not my thing but I enjoyed this! Fast paced, easy to read, a detailed plot that was also possible to keep up with despite a multitude of characters.
3. 99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne, 4 ⭐️
THE PERFECT ROM COM IN BOOK FORM JUST READ IT. The end was so romantic it made me, The Ice Queen, cry. Also I love romanticizing things I hate in real life so reading a book about fixing up a house right before I start working on a house? Good move.
4. The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley, 3 ⭐️
I wanted more from this, especially since I’d been looking forward to it after devouring The Guest List and The Hunting Party. Those are better. Just read those.

Bonus Round
A book so bad I quit after the first chapter:
The Archivist by Rex Pickett (never read books about your own profession they will just infuriate you)
“Emily wished she could read men better. She knew she was attractive to them, even if she deliberately wore off-putting black brow-line glasses and styled her chestnut-brown hair in a short, ragged, unkempt shag, as if she had cut it herself with a pair of scissors and a pocket mirror. As if, if you thought about it, she were an escapee from a lunatic asylum. She wore a poker-faced countenance and a mannish fashion statement of fleece vests over button-up shirts that made you question whether she was brilliant or crazy. Or both.”

Ramones, The Mamas and The Papas, Dusty Springfield, The Supremes, Simon and Garfunkel, Kiss.
Ramones - Do you like punk music?
YESSSS. I love The Ramones, The Clash, The Stooges, and any sort of adjacent alternative classic rock (which is honestly probably my favourites besides straight 70s singer-songwriters) like David Bowie, The Jam, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, The Velvet Underground, T. Rex, Steve Harley, The Rubinoos, The Sonics, The Only Ones, The Modern Lovers, The Cars, and Joe Jackson ; My favourite (strictly) punk band is The Clash.
The Mamas and The Papas - What’s the song that have a harmony so good that makes you want to punch something?
I’m going to say just because The Mamas and The Papas’ was the prompt, I’ll say, “I Saw Her Again” by The Mamas and the Papas. It’s such a good song, and I can’t believe I can’t find a live performance online; it’s probably one of my favourite Mamas and the Papas songs.
Dusty Springfield - Do you have a favorite soul song?
Off the top of my head, anything by Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, or Etta James. (I’m still not over Etta seeing that movie Beyonce made which was totally an Oscar vehicle for her, being asked her opinion, and saying bluntly, “Bitch can’t sing like me.” xD IT ENDED ME.)
The Supremes - Your favorite girlband?
I mean, if we’re going strictly all girls in the band, I have some cheesy embarrassing choices that I think most people low key like (Spice Girls, The Supremes, Little Mix). If we’re talking about musicality and just having a girl FRONTING the band, that’s a different story.
In that case, it would be Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Patti Smith Group, Blondie, Jefferson Airplane, The Cranberries, Eurythmics, The Runaways, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Fleetwood Mac, and Heart.
Out of those, I’ve got to go for The Runaways and Joan Jett generally.
Simon and Garfunkel - Your favorite acoustic song?
I LOVE anything that has poignant lyrics and a 70s singer-songwriter feel, so I could never choose a favourite acoustic song. The only one I can think of off the top of my head would be ‘Annie’s Song’ by John Denver. I think it’s so sad that people saw him a bit as a nerdy-goody two shoes in the 70s, because he was so earnest in his music. I also love James Taylor and ‘Sweet Baby James’; he was actually one of the first concerts I went to, and I love his entire repertoire. I used to play Sweet Baby James on repeat if I was having trouble sleeping
Kiss - What is the perfect song to describe your relationship with your boyfriend/girlfriend/crush?
Crush: ‘Where The Colours Don’t Go” by Sam Phillips. I’ve always felt emotionally connected to the person I’m meant to spend the rest of my life with; I just haven’t met them yet.
‘In one take, no giveHalf live, half ignoreAn endless chase in a small placeOne world, one white flagOne shopping bag and restaurantNo surprise thereOnly lies thereThat’s where the colors don’t goThat’s where the colors don’t showThat’s where the colors don’t goI want your eyes to color my worldAnd hear my endless longingThat’s where the colors don’t goThat’s where the colors don’t showThat’s where the colors don’t go’
