After reading Robyn Crawford's book, Whitney's mom's books, and Kennedy's the only thing I'm sure of is that Whitney Houston was surrounded by people who wanted to suck up her spotlight.
Crawford wrote a lot about herself for writing a book about someone else, and Cissy Houston spent more than half her book about her daughter writing her own autobiography. It's sad and frustrating to wonder if maybe one of the greatest singers ever just didn't receive the full support she deserved from those closest to her.

February’s Book
For the month of February during my 2020 book challenge, I chose to read A Song for You by Robyn Crawford. For those of you who don’t know Robyn Crawford was Whitney Houston’s best friend for decades and her lover for a short time before Whitney made it big.
Before I read this I kinda knew who Robyn was. I think like most people I first heard about Robyn when that Whitney Houston documentary came out a couple of years ago and of course my tiny lesbian ears perked up. I kinda couldn’t believe that the Whitney Houston, the woman who stood with Bobby Brown had had a relationship with another woman. Also the love between them and the love Robyn obviously had for Whitney is beautiful.
The book’s first chapter details how the two first met at a community center to be summer counselor’s is honestly the sweetest thing I’ve ever read in my life. The fact that Robyn could still remember what exactly Whitney was wearing and that she was stopped in her tracks by Whitney was so sweet I think I have some cavities. But their relationship wasn’t really all rainbows, they both eventually began experimenting with drugs together, something that Robyn could leave behind but not Whitney.
This wasn’t just about Whitney and Robyn’s time with her but also very much about herself and her family. I fell in love with her siblings and her mom, who actually reminded me of my mom so much. Her mom was basically her other best friend and confidante which is the complete opposite from how Whitney and her mother were.
I think anyone who has ever had a difficult time leaving a relationship or friendship behind can really see themselves in Robin. Everything from her reaching her breaking point, deciding to leave Whitney, to having to move on with her life and find herself. Honestly recommend reading this even if you’re just not a Whitney fan it’s a really good book. It’s now in my top five.
March’s book is The Cheerleader’s by Kara Thomas! If anyone has any book recommendations or a site that recommends books based off of books you like please let me know!
