"A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" (1958) Review
Tumblr media
"A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" (1958) Review There have been many versions about the April 1912 sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic. Many versions. And I have personally seen at least five of them. One of them happened to be the 1958 movie, "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER".
Directed by Roy Ward Baker, "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" is based upon historian Walter Lord's 1955 book about the historical sinking. Since the 1958 movie was based upon a historical book instead of a novel, Baker, producer William MacQuitty and screenwriter Eric Ambler approached the film's plot in a semi-documentary style. Even the movie's leading character turned out to be the Titanic's Second Officer, Charles Lightoller, who was portrayed by actor Kenneth More. The movie also featured other historical figures such as J. Bruce Ismay, Thomas Andrews, Captain Edward J. Smith and Margaret "Molly" Brown. Due to this semi-documentary approach, "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" is regarded as the best movie about the Titanic. I cannot deny that there is a great deal to admire about "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER". Not only do I feel it is an excellent movie, I could see that Roy Ward Baker did his best to re-create that last night aboard the Titanic. He and Ambler gave the audience glimpses into the lives of the ship's crew and passengers. The movie also went into great detail of their efforts to remain alive following the ship's brief collision with an iceberg. Some of my favorite scenes include the Irish steerage passengers' efforts to reach the life boats on the upper decks, the wireless operators' (David McCullum and Kenneth Griffin) efforts to summon other ships to rescue the passengers and crew, and passenger Molly Brown (Tucker McGuire)'s conflict with the sole crewman in her lifeboat. But my favorite scene has to be that moment when the Titanic's stern rose high before the ship sank into the Atlantic Ocean. For a film shot in black and white during the late 1950s, I must admit that "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" looked very handsome. Legendary cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth's phtography struck me as sharp and very elegant. I do not know if Yvonne Caffin's costume designs for the movie's 1912 setting was completely accurate, but they certainly did add to the movie's late Edwardian atmosphere. Especially those costumes for the first-class passengers. I do have to give kudos to the special effects team led by Bill Warrington. He and his team did a superb job in re-creating the ocean liner's historic sinking. I am even more impressed that their work still manages to hold up after fifty-four years. The cast of "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" was led by Kenneth More, who portrayed Second Officer Lightoller with his usual energetic charm. More was ably supported by the likes of Laurence Naismith as Captain Smith, Michael Goodliffe's poignant portrayal of ship designer Thomas Andrews, Frank Lawton as J. Bruce Ismay, George Rose as the inebriated survivor Charles Joughin and Tucker McGuire's colorful portrayal of American socialite Molly Brown. The movie also featured future "AVENGERS" and Bond veteran Honor Blackman; David McCullum of "THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E." and "N.C.I.S." fame; and Bernard Fox, who will also appear in James Cameron's 1997 movie about the Titanic sinking. Even Sean Connery made an uncredited appearance in the film, but I never did spot him. But despite the numerous good performances, I honestly have to say that I found nothing exceptional about any of them. Like many others, I used to believe that "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" was the best movie about the Titanic. After this latest viewing, I do not believe I can maintain that opinion any longer. In fact, I am beginning to suspect there may not be any "ultimate" Titanic film. And "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" is not perfect, as far as I am concerned. Many have applauded the filmmakers for eschewing any fictional melodrama or using the sinking as a backdrop for a fictional story. Personally, I could not care less if a Titanic movie is simply a fictional melodrama or a semi-documentary film. All I require is a first-rate movie that will maintain my interest. "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" began with a montage of newsreel clips featuring the Titanic's christening in Belfast. One, the ship was never christened. And two, I could see that the newsreel footage used in the movie dated from the 1930s. The movie tried its best to allow the audience to identify with some of its characters. But due to "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" being a docudrama, I feel that it failed to give an in-depth study of its more prominent characters . . . making it difficult for me to identify with any of them. I realize that "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" was a British production, but I was amazed at the low number of American passengers featured in the cast. The 1953 film, "TITANIC" suffered from a similar malady - the only British characters I could recall were members of the crew. I do remember at least three Americans in the 1958 movie - Molly Brown; Benjamin Guggenheim, portrayed by Harold Goldblatt and a third passenger, whose name escapes me. I was satisfied with McGuire's performance as Molly Brown and the nameless actor who portrayed the third American passenger. But Goldblatt portrayed Guggenheim as a member of the British upper class in both attitude and accent. It almost seemed as if the filmmakers wanted Guggenheim to be viewed as a British gentleman, instead of an American one. Walter Lord's book made it clear that one of the last songs performed by Titanic's band was NOT "Nearer My God to Thee". Yet, the filmmakers chose to perpetrate this myth in the movie by having the remaining passengers and crew sing the song en masse before the ship began to sink in earnest. This pious attitude continued in a scene aboard the R.M.S. Carpathia, in which the survivors listened to a religious sermon. Instead of projecting an air of melancholy or despair, the survivors, thanks to Ward Baker, seemed to project an air of the British stiff upper lip cliche. I feel that a melancholic air among the survivors would have made the scene seem more human. I cannot deny that "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" is a first-rate look at the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic. More importantly, the movie and especially the visual effects still hold up very well after half-a-century. But the movie possesses flaws that make it difficult for me to regard it as the best Titanic movie ever made. Perhaps . . . there is no best Titanic movie. Just bad or well-made ones.

With what little of what we saw of The Rooster Miraculous, we all assumed it’s power would be healing (to me at least) cuz when you’re feelin’ weak, you’d eat chicken soup and such, but Surprise! Surprise! It’s power is actually “whatever you want it to be”! Still not sure if this was a last minute entry on the writers part for it or if this was planned ahead, but I don’t know how this fits with the rooster!? The rooster represents pride, honesty, watchfulness and flamboyance. The power is still cool though, a free-will wish fulfillment for anyone with what they need like how Marc used it to help win the soccer/football game by wishing to “score every time he got the ball”! (“Penalteam”). Wait a minute! It grants you the power to have any power you want! ANY power you want! Sure Gabe/Monarch found out there were limitations to it (“Destruction”), but what if someone smarter were to use it for their advantage! Don! Don! Don! Let’s see:
*Pretention-So the captain of the Anti-Adrienette ship, Gabe, is not happy that his son is dating a “bakers daughter” cuz he and Tomoe promised that their children would end up together (“Protection”) and Gabe tried c*ckblocking (“Adoration”) and also how it’s interfering with their plans like how Marinette snuck into the Diamond Ball (“Emotion”). Maybe if he just talked to Marinette and get to know her better, he’d stop trying to shoot cannons at her ship! Marinette does idolize Gabe as she too wants to go into fashion, so that’s a good thing. He did like her hat design for Adrien to model at the fashion show (“Queen’s Battle Part 1:Style Queen”) and preferred her as Ladybug for Clara’s music video (“Frightningale”). With that, I’m sure he’ll be on board right?……riiiiiiiiiight? (awkward pause)
As for Gabes co-captain, Tomoe, she says she doesn’t need to control Kagami cuz she’s “obedient” enough even with a certain ring she wears. Kagami tries to tell her mother to stop resurfacing the Adrigami ship and before she could say anything else, Argos swoops in and kidnaps her……why!? Tomoe gets upset by this and is akumatized as Ikari Matagi Gozen! Which is basically her signature akumatized form except in this case, her car is transformed as a mechanical steed and she has a bow and arrow too. She’s also given The Rooster Miraculous power. Oh sh*t! She’s way smarter than Gabe! What power did she wish to have!? Super Smell!? Tbh, I thought it was dumb at first cuz with her blindness, her other senses are enhanced since she could hear (over the phone!) Gabe’s abnormal heartbeat (“Intuition”), so why would she use that power!? Even when akumatized you have no disabilities, so yeah, you get where I’m gettin’ at. Turns out, it was actually for her steed to track down Argos instead. Okay, yeah, that makes sense. Too bad it wasn’t much help cuz he figured a way around it. Eh.
The ship-to-ship combat battle rages on and here’s how it went down. With both ships anchored, a parley was established between Marinette and Gabe. Sadly, Adrien couldn’t be there to witness it as Gabe “ordered” him to stay away and that’s when Adrien noticed a strange feeling of this command (whispers) sentimonster. Anyway, they talked about the fashion industry and it’s here we see their differing view points on it. For Marinette, she creates to inspire and spread joy with everyone’s interests, but with Gabe, he creates to influence people into thinking his way is the “right” way and to follow suit. Conformist much!? That’s like manipulation! Course he’d know about that! He even tries to persuade Marinette he can give her her dream job if she just jumps ship! Marinette refuses to believe his bullsh*t theory, continues to sail on the S.S Adrienette and tells him that he and his pancakes can go f*ck themselves! 👏👏👏(cheers and applause with whistles). Pro:Badass gutsy move on her part for not surrendering, Con:She made things worse cuz that made Gabe wanna send Adrien to London! Don! Don! Don! Saw how that turned out *cough*Spoilers!*cough*. The thing that really got people talking was the start of the whole Feligami ship! Yes! That’s a ship! You’d think this show would “Pair the Spares” and have Adrienettes exes hook-up, but nope! It’s the identical cousin that gets a love interest with the ex instead! Turns out, Felix/Argos was serious about his moments with Kagami at the Diamond Dance and genuinely did like her to the point of kidnapping her. You guys think this is “cute!?” The whole ship thing here, you think this is “cute!?” We have Felix Fathom here, a guy who keeps masquerading as Adrien, at one point, to make him look bad, pick picking people and more importantly, stealing nearly all the miraculouses and giving them to the bad guy making him stronger than ever and not feeling any remorse for it whatsoever is allowed to have a love interest all cuz we’re supposed be boo-hooey about him and his dark past!? What was the message!? Love redeems!? You do realize he only likes Kagami cuz their “similar” in something (whispers) sentimon-(gets interrupted by someone) I’ve just been informed that it’s considered a slur, so the more “politically correct” term is sentibeings! And that she only likes him cuz he looks like Adrien only more bolder and assertive! Oh yeah! That’s a cute ship! He said they have things in common too. What!? She too likes magic tricks!? He’s been stalking her too! Oh great! Now I’m being hypocritical cuz that’s how Adrienette started! (groans and mutters under breath) AretherenostableshipsinthisHudson Riverofashipshow!? You’d think that a teen prodigy like Felix, who was Englands youngest graduate, would’ve known better than to resort to kidnapping to win someone over (even for safety from an abusive parent), but like all rich kids in this show, they are lost like a rat in a maze when it comes to social norms! Whomp! Whomp! Whomp! (sighs) Again, Felix is an Anti-Villain, he does good, but with not so good intentions! He was just trying to save Kagami from her mothers control cuz as it turns out, he understands the feeling cuz he’s father was an a**hole too! We’re just figuring this out now!? They couldn’t have told us about this in his debut ep. (“Felix”) when he was b*tching to Adrien about not attending his fathers funeral and being upset about it!? If his dad was such an a**hole shouldn’t he have been partying like it’s 1999 cuz he’ll be outta his life and no longer bother him and his mom!? WTF writers!? If you think this relationship started off poorly, it gets worse! Ladynoir approves of it! You sure Ladybug!? The same guy that sexually harassed you, stole from you causing you all sorts of problems, hid from you and kicked your ass calling you a control freak and you’re just cool with this new ship sailing on the high seas!?…….well…….O.K. The only good qualities to this is he continued to let Kagami have her freedom by giving her mother a fake family ring and giving Kagami the real one.

Give a warm welcome to...
@krazykratts 's The Wilder! It is the ruins of an ancient kingdom overgrown by a Redwood forest. The kingdom was destroyed long ago by a cataclysmic event, warping the surrounding landscape and leaving what remains burried in a thick labrynth of nature. Currently, its only inhabitants are wild animals and a creature named Anxi, who gaurds a supposedly magic library. (I tried to draw vines entwining the library. Sorry they look weird 😅)
@rosey100 's Rosé Valhalla! A kingdom full of magic, kind hearted, and occasionally violent people. (I didn't know what you meant by "EastWest" so I guessed you were going for somewhere in Europe and designed it based on that. Also sorry it's hard to see what's on the flag. I tried.)
@razzle-zazzle 's S.S. Infinity! An airship full of AUs that flies over the lands of Creatura. Somewhat disconnected from the rest of the land's inhabitants due to introversion, but harbor no ill intent. Open to visitors at any time, provided they can fly. Occasionally lands to be more accessible. Messenger birds. They take treats as payment. (You didn't describe what the ship looked like so I went ahead and made it a dragon. Kind of as a parody of the Tortuga and also because someone mentioned the lack of dragons in Creatura.)
@handfullofmoss 's Mossy Place! It is an oak forest overrun with glowing, deadly poisonous mushrooms. This forest is home to man eating butterflies, ever-observing entities called Shifters, and a mysterious baker named Nyx. Nyx has discovered a way to make the mushrooms edible, and will sell them to you in favor of butterflies, bones, and other things. She's friendly, but not much is known about her. She has some connection the Shifters, so it'd be unwise to challenge her in her domain. (I tried to make the bakery look like a mushroom)
@m0thisonfire 's Wasted Tower! It is an overgrown ruin and a prime hub for scavenging. It was named after it's crumbling tower. People come here regularly to look for ancient artifacts and other such items.
@fandom-science-assholery 's Paint-in-Water! It is the second largest lake on the coninent, Turtle lake is the only lake larger. This is the only place on the coninent with no large animals! It's just plants and the little bugs that feed off them. (I JUST NOW REALIZED THAT YOU'RE SIDEWAYS ON THE MAP LIKE LOCALARIUM AND I AM SO SORRY. IF MY BRAIN WAS CHOCOLATE IT WOULDN'T EVEN FILL AN M&M)

(Un)Happy Harbor
Today I had to go on a boat trip.
For some reason. My shipment of turquoise fishing shirts got sent to a small fishing Island Called "Happy Harbor" a few miles from the the docs.
I have booked a day trip to retrieve my shirts and return the package I had gotten,
When I had arrived. The woman known as Captain Abidab had a single turquoise shirt (showing she had the rest). I also had a single bottle of shoe polish.
Tumblr media
The delivery company had hired an artist to draw a picture signifying that the messed up an order
They have an account on this website
@fluffytimearts
thanks again
Anyways.
The after bringing The rest of the shoe polish down from the ferry. Captain Abidab had told me to come with her to her ship at a near by doc.
I then realized why she had order so much shoe polish.
Her ship really was a giant shoe
I assume that there might have been some exaggeration or some sort of inside joke when they potrayed it as a shoe on the TV show.
Anyways
As I was given my box of shirts on her ship. I went back down to get the shoe polish. Leaving the shirts on the floor.
When I came back down
MY BOX OF SHIRT ARE GONE AGAIN.
I looked around The Small area in front of the docs.
I nearly given up... Until.
There was a small boat with a toad, a Pecan (pelican species), and A Penkoon (half raccoon half penguin) and U'ensil (a species that looks like utensils commonly found in the Luncheon region of the world)
As soon as I was about to jump into the water and swimming after them. Captain Abidab had caught the back up of my collar with handle of a harpoon and hoisted me up onto her ship.
Captain Abidab: Listen lad. It ain't wise to go after battle when it's four against one. Especially if you're the one in that fight.
Garth: Then what am I supposed to do.
Captain Abidab: Tell you what boyo. You shine this ship and I'll take you to those scallywags.
I had agreed and began shining at the toe of the boat
It was not long before we managed to find the thieves who had stolen my shirts.
Apparently they were on a smaller boat trying to gather supplies for a pirate ship called the S.S. Tea Cup, a ship that houses the black sugar gang.
We tried to not be at a close enough distance for which they could see us.
It turns out they actually had stolen some other things. Like some sausages from a butcher, some bread from a baker, and a copy of the Movie "Dirk Drain Head 2000" from the bootlegger.
We decided to ambush them and take back the stuff they have stole.
As soon as we need our presence known, they jumped on The shoe boat. I immediately got attacked by the Penkoon as he body slammed into me. As soon as I managed to regain my footing. I got the mop I was using earlier to polish the boat and started polishing the area around him causing him to slip.
I saw that Captain Abidab was in trouble and proceeded to help her. She was fighting using her harpoon with the toad who was using a... Rainbow lollipop for some reason
I grabbed something from one of the bag of stolen goods.
I threw...a pink frosted sprinkle donut.
I got lucky and managed to make him slip on the donut.
Before I could do anything. The pecan had thrown the U'ensil to the mast pinning me to it.
I was unable to do anything that could unpin me.
I watched as Captain Abidab had manages to Handel fighting of the other three. It was very impressive.
Eventually the Penkoon had been flung and dislodged the U'ensil freeing me.
I had just managed to finally get away.
I had finally managed to get back to the fight and help defeat the other two pirates.
It took a bit of time. But we managed to finally defeat them.
We ended up picking up their boat
And headed back tho the harbor.
At least that is what we are supposed to do.
Then the U'ensil tore the sails and began swimming away.
...
There was no replacement sails.
Guess what we had to replace the sails with
With
My
Shirts!
Sigh
I'm glad that I am on land again. And I am glad that all of the goods were returned to there owners.
But I am upset that I was unable to get the very thing that I had come for.
I still can't even get the coins that I spent on it back.
...
After my fair well to the harbor and Captain Abidab. I had decided to head home.
It was not a good day today.
Garth signing off.

Can I request Naruhoudo's crush using the Susato Drop on him and he's all flustered about it but also his pride hurts a little now?
Hi thank you for this ask, I owe you my life. I'm sorry I went ham on this request in the most intense way possible.
SPOILER WARNING FOR THE FIRST GAME's first three cases.
Naruhodou's mind had been entirely focused on his career as a lawyer since the remaining days on the S.S. Alcair after that... incident. Never in his life did he feel that he took up something more serious than now, as he carried on this will thrusted upon him. Along with the ups and downs that came with being forced into this lifestyle so suddenly, insecurities about how he really feels standing as an attorney have been keeping his mind occupied these cold London nights. Even on his off days, he had been spent an equal amount socializing and studying, though much to Susato's happiness.
Which is why he is so confused. Confused as to why his mind was able to let in yet another thing to plague his thoughts. Not that you were a plague..! No! Nothing close of the sort. In fact, you had been nothing short of a blessing gracing his ever tremulous days in London. It wasn't you that was working him up so much, rather it was the feelings that you had wrought onto his heart.
Though, Naruhodou was getting ahead of himself. He had been here for a few months, but when he met you it had been on one of his early days of arrival. You had been an early face that welcomed him on his journey to this foreign land, and one that would prove to him that London, perhaps, had a few friendly inhabitants. You were a simple flower peddler. That day, the coldness had no mercy for anybody, and even the snot running from people's noses could not escape the near-immediate chill of the air. Many Londoners simply walked past you, having used to seeing independent sellers like you on every corner. Normally you would have piqued the interest of the ever awestruck Susato for London's charms, however there were more imperative circumstances that she was facing: lodgings.
Their earnings were depleting, fast, and they were not having luck on finding a cheap place to stay. London truly hasn't been the kindest to them or their wallets. Naruhodou remembers the situation well. He felt useless as the older person, not being able to provide for his young assistant in their dire need. Even though you, yourself were having no such luck in earning your living that day, you readily made yourself available and willing to help these two strangers find cheap lodgings. As you guided them to the inn in question, he remembers thinking of the many streets and potential buyers you were sacrificing in order to ensure that they had an affordable place to stay that freezing evening.
You were truly an angel sent from above. That was perhaps the moment he fell for you and your kindness. As you left, you gifted both of them with flowers as a welcoming gift to the city. Even he himself felt his tears threaten as Susato bid you farewell.
But, again, that was just a fleeting memory. A small, insignificant fixture that would make no impact on his life. London was huge, and you were just one of the countless faces he would happen upon in this new land... Or so he thought.
You, as the neighboring modest flower shop owner to 221 Baker's street and older sibling figure to Iris meant that you were, in fact, a significant fixture in his new life. When you weren't working or tending your indoor garden (made possible with Holmes' invention no doubt) you were helping Iris with her multitude of hobbies. Your perceptive mind and knowledge of many individuals and differing faces of London due to your job came in handy during his investigations with the group as well.
With all the excitement and sense of duty that he faced the first few months of arrival, there was no need for him to address the fuzzy feelings you gave him every time you smiled in his direction, nor the heat to his face whenever you graced him with your kindness.
But when the caseless months became a fact of life for his offices, he supposed he grew soft. He was always too embarrassed to visit your shop without purpose, so he gladly took advantage of the lack of action in his career to come down on days you worked in house to purchase a little something from you, "To liven up the office". His visits not only had him leaving with an abundance of flowers, but knowledge of a multitude of plants, and even skills to take care of them. His favorite times were the ones where he got to watch you tend to your flowers in the tiny sun room, as the rays of light captured your face.
This however was almost daily as you only street peddled twice a week. Even as his office became an impromptu forest, much to Susato's slight horror, your daily visits also became another highlight of his days. You having dinner at Holmes and Watson's flat seemed to have been a routine occurrence for years.
Once it hit him that the two things he looked forward to the moment he woke up had to do with you, he did not know what to say.  He was more taken by you than he thought. Being the avoidant young man he was, he never did anything about his feelings. There was no reason to. He only hoped that his little crush wasn't obvious to his colleagues with his tell-all eyes. And, it's not like he was not content with where your relationship was with each other currently, no! He would be lying if he said he wasn't curious about how you felt about him, though.
---
Managing your own small scale shop was something that was not difficult for you. You woke up early, tended to your plants, dried the unusable flowers that expired, and set up shop. However, today was one of those rare days that things were not going all that well. As your shop was extremely small along with your indoor garden taking up a majority of the space in the small rented building (if it could be called that), it meant your living quarters were even smaller. That also meant that your when a smell omitted from one room, it effected all of them.
And today, was in fact that day. You awoke to a spoiled smell coming from below. Your eyes shot open and anxiety shot through your veins. As you stood up too abruptly and swung your feet to the floor bed, you physically recoiled. It was as if your floor had become ice itself. You were able to ignore that feeling quickly and heading to your indoor garden. Opening the protective screen into the sectioned on area, you were hit by a wave of warmth…Warmth compared to the frigid outer room, that is. In fact, there wasn't even an unusual smell coming from the area that was currently average temperature. You let go of a breath you did not realize you were holding knowing your plants were fine.
Your mind quickly deduced where the smell came from not a second later. Running downstairs, you were sadly correct. Your heating must have stopped working downstairs somehow, as your home is as cold as if you were sleeping directly under the foggy London moon. All the cut flowers you had on display since yesterday had expired due to the drastic change of temperature shocking your poor foliage. You felt miserable. It looked like you were not going to be enjoying a peaceful day today-- or opening up shop for that matter.
Waking up from his peaceful sleep, Naruhodou had walked up to the window in his office as he stretched his body from sleep's grasp. He was surprised to see you out and about so early in the morning, hauling flowers out on your cart. He opened the latch on his window and invited the cold air as he pushed it open.
"(Y/N)!! Good Morning!!" He earnestly called out. He could not help himself to greet you, as you were there in front of him even if you hadn't noticed. It seemed he was going to have a good day today.
Jumping slightly, you looked around before realizing the call came from above. You yelled a morning's greeting back, as Susato joined Naruhodou at the window and shared greetings as well.
"What are you doing out so early? You aren't scheduled for going out to town today, are you?" He yelled as quietly as possible to you, finding it a bit awkward to try to hold a conversation like this, especially so early in the morning.
"I've happened to run into some sort of trouble this morning it seems. I don't think I will be open today at all," You sadly informed them.
"Oh, that is a shame!"
Susato then turned to Naruhodou and glared. Naruhodou couldn't help but wonder why he always seemed to upset girls without even saying anything.
"Naruhodou-sama! I cannot believe you would ask (Y/N)-sama of their problems without even offering your help to them! How do you consider yourself a gentleman?!" Susato could even scold him on an empty stomach before breakfast time, he supposed. It seemed breakfast was out of the question, because Susato had already begun whisking him past the main room with a quick greeting to Iris before going out the front door.
As they both entered into your shop, the odor greeted them before you could. Surprised to see them, you reluctantly but gratefully accepted their offer to help you clean out your shop.
You thought the poor girl was going to cry at the sight of all these flowers getting hauled out with the intention of being incinerated, but it had to be done. Naruhodou had earnestly tried to help you both, but with the gung-ho attitude of Susato combined with your diligence it seemed he was not much of help as he would have liked to have been. He even felt a little jealous. He had planned on seeing you after breakfast if he had realized there was an issue afoot.
As you were making sure everything was here and accounted for before you walked off to the disposal area, you made eye contact with Naruhodou. You began to feel a little guilty as it was obvious how he was feeling with one look. The feeling deepened when you think about how they dropped their initial plans at the start of their day, all for a friend in need. Though not without reason, you did end up ignoring your friend, which was a shame considering you have begun to cherish his visits dearly.
You approached him. "Hello, Mister Naruhodou. How about after me and Susato get the last of the plant taken care of, I treat you both to a late breakfast. And to make it up to you since I won't be working today, we can take a walk to some places in London you haven't been to, if you'd like. I know a lot of beautiful hidden sights!"
He hadn't noticed that he was being so obvious. Did all responsible people like Susato have the ability to read minds?
"TH-THAT… would be wonderful, thank you so much!" Even so, he felt his face let out a smile at your kindness. You were always thinking of others.
"I do have a favor to ask of you though," you sheepishly stated.
"Anything for you!" Good grief, he had not meant to be that enthusiastic. You laughed a bit at his eagerness.
"Could you stay here and keep an eye on my shop? I wish to leave the doors open a bit longer to air out the place, but I'm afraid of someone coming inside."
"That would be fine! Don't worry!"
Oh, it had been fine, of course. However, you really trusted him that much? He was by no means cocky, but the implication you found him dependable stroked his ego, just a bit.
---
As he stood at the front, a bit too proudly, he patiently awaited both of your returns. Bakers Street was quiet, as it's mornings typically went, but he was aware people would be filing in slowly for the other shops littering the path.
He had expected people, though. Beings that walked on two legs. Not small, four legged creatures. Especially not four legged creatures that were bounding towards him at immense speeds. Before he could move to shut the door to your small shop, it was too late. But instead of bounding for the shop as he assumed the dog had bounded for Naruhodou's own head.
He let out a cry, much to his embarrassment, and fought desperately to keep his balance. The dog was clinging onto his face with desperation. It was difficult to see or hear his surroundings. He half wished that his weak disposition would kick in and he would just faint and get to forget this nightmare.
Distracted by these racing thoughts and sensory deprivation, there was no way for him to realize Susato and you approaching, nor your cry of his name. Personally, you began to panic. You did not exactly fancy dogs that looked near-ready to maul harmless people, no matter how easy the target looked. Before your own fear had a chance to kick in, your instincts had and you dropped your cart to help your friend.
The closer you got, the cloudier your rational thought had begun to come. The combination of panic and fear had won in your mind, and it was too late. Instead of grabbing the dog, out of fear you had grabbed Naruhodou and tossed him over.
Hey, you and Iris had been learning a lot from your foreign friend. But even you did not think that her lessons would be on the surface of your mind as you panicked.
Naruhodou once again found himself in a situation where his mind could not make any sense of it. Once he made contact with the floor, the dog had scampered off into the street, seemingly satisfied with the destruction it had caused.
"Naruhodou!! Are you alright?!"
He made a groaning noise, but could Susato really ask him that right now? Wasn't it obvious?
"Naruhodou-sama, what happened?"
Wait, had that been Susato's voice? Then who was just speaking to him?
"Ah…." The realization hit him slowly. He had not expected, in a million years, that you would have been the one to toss him over.
Tears glistened in your eyes as you grabbed his hands. "Naruhodou, please, can you hear me? Oh no…"
He had found himself for a loss of words. Not because of the dog, nor because of being tossed over. It wasn't even because of the haziness of his mind. No, it was because he had his pride attacked by none other than you.
How could, even you, see him as someone who is so easily toss-able?

Remembering Shirley Chisholm.
https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Shirley_Chisholm
Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (November 30, 1924 – January 1, 2005) was an American politician, educator, and author. In 1968, she became the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress, and she represented New York's 12th Congressional District for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. In 1972, she became the first black candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States, and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
In 2015, Chisholm was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Early life and education
Shirley Anita St. Hill was born on November 30, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents from the Caribbean region. She had three younger sisters, two born within three years after Shirley, one later. Their father, Charles Christopher St. Hill, was born in British Guiana, lived in Barbados for a while, and then arrived in the United States via Antilla, Cuba, on April 10, 1923, aboard the S.S. Munamar in New York City. Their mother, Ruby Seale, was born in Christ Church, Barbados, and arrived in New York City aboard the S.S. Pocone on March 8, 1921.
Her father was an unskilled laborer who sometimes worked in a factory that made burlap bags, but when he could not find factory employment instead worked as a baker's helper, while her mother was a skilled seamstress and domestic worker who had trouble working and raising the children at the same time. As a consequence, in November 1929 as Shirley turned five, she and her two sisters were sent to Barbados on the S.S. Vulcana to live with their maternal grandmother, Emaline Seale. There they lived on the grandmother's farm in the Vauxhall village in Christ Church, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse that took education seriously. She did not return to the United States until May 19, 1934, aboard the SS Nerissa in New York. As a result, Shirley spoke with a recognizable West Indian accent throughout her life. In her 1970 autobiography Unbought and Unbossed, she wrote: "Years later I would know what an important gift my parents had given me by seeing to it that I had my early education in the strict, traditional, British-style schools of Barbados. If I speak and write easily now, that early education is the main reason." As a result of her time on the island, and regardless of her U.S. birth, Shirley would always consider herself a Barbadian American. Regarding the role of her grandmother, she later said, "Granny gave me strength, dignity, and love. I learned from an early age that I was somebody. I didn't need the black revolution to tell me that."
Beginning in 1939, Shirley St. Hill attended Girls' High School in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, a highly regarded, integrated school that attracted girls from throughout Brooklyn. St. Hill earned her Bachelor of Arts from Brooklyn College in 1946, where she won prizes for her debating skills. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
St. Hill met Conrad O. Chisholm in the late 1940s. He had come to the U.S. from Jamaica in 1946 and would later become a private investigator who specialized in negligence-based lawsuits. They married in 1949 in a large West Indian-style wedding.
Shirley Chisholm taught in a nursery school while furthering her education, earning her MA in elementary education from Teachers College at Columbia University in 1952.
Career as educator
From 1953 to 1959, she was director of the Friends Day Nursery in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and of the Hamilton-Madison Child Care Center in lower Manhattan. From 1959 to 1964, she was an educational consultant for the Division of Day Care. She became known as an authority on issues involving early education and child welfare.
Running a day care center got her interested in politics, and during this time she formed the basis of her political career, working as a volunteer for white-dominated political clubs in Brooklyn, and with the Bedford-Stuyvesant Political League and the League of Women Voters.
State legislator
Chisholm was a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly from 1965 to 1968, sitting in the 175th, 176th and 177th New York State Legislatures. Her successes in the legislature included getting unemployment benefits extended to domestic workers. She also sponsored the introduction of a SEEK program (Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge) to the state, which provided disadvantaged students the chance to enter college while receiving intensive remedial education.
In August 1968, she was elected as the Democratic National Committeewoman from New York State.
Member of Congress
Initial election
In 1968 she ran for the U.S. House of Representatives from New York's 12th congressional district, which as part of a court-mandated reapportionment plan had been significantly redrawn to focus on Bedford-Stuyvesant and was thus expected to result in Brooklyn's first black member of Congress. (Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. had, in 1945, become the first black member of Congress from New York City as a whole.) As a result of the redrawing, the white incumbent in the former 12th, Representative Edna F. Kelly, sought re-election in a different district. Chisholm announced her candidacy around January 1968 and established some early organizational support. Her campaign slogan was "Unbought and unbossed". In the June 18, 1968, Democratic primary, Chisholm defeated two other black opponents, State Senator William S. Thompson and labor official Dollie Robertson. In the general election, she staged an upset victory over James L. Farmer, Jr., the former director of the Congress of Racial Equality who was running as a Liberal Party candidate with Republican support, winning by an approximately two-to-one margin. Chisholm thereby became the first black woman elected to Congress.
Early terms
Chisholm was assigned to the House Agricultural Committee. Given her urban district, she felt the placement was irrelevant to her constituents. When Chisholm confided to Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson that she was upset and insulted by her assignment, Schneerson suggested that she use the surplus food to help the poor and hungry. Chisholm subsequently met Robert Dole, and worked to expand the food stamp program. She later played a critical role in the creation of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. Chisholm would credit Schneerson for the fact that so many "poor babies [now] have milk and poor children have food." Chisholm was then also placed on the Veterans' Affairs Committee. Soon after, she voted for Hale Boggs as House Majority Leader over John Conyers. As a reward for her support, Boggs assigned her to the much-prized Education and Labor Committee, which was her preferred committee. She was the third highest-ranking member of this committee when she retired from Congress.
All those Chisholm hired for her office were women; half of these were African-American. Chisholm said that she had faced much more discrimination during her New York legislative career because she was a woman than because of her race.
Chisholm joined the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971 as one of its founding members. In the same year, she was also a founding member of the National Women's Political Caucus.
In May 1971 she, along with fellow New York Congresswoman Bella Abzug, introduced a bill to provide $10 billion in federal funds for child care services by 1975. A less expensive version introduced by Senator Walter Mondale eventually passed the House and Senate as the Comprehensive Child Development Bill, but was vetoed by President Richard Nixon in December 1971, who said it was too expensive and would undermine the institution of the family.
1972 presidential campaign
Chisholm began exploring her candidacy in July 1971, and formally announced her presidential bid on January 25, 1972, in a Baptist church in her district in Brooklyn. There she called for a "bloodless revolution" at the forthcoming Democratic nomination convention. Chisholm became the first black major-party candidate to run for President of the United States, in the 1972 U.S. presidential election, making her also the first woman ever to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination (U.S. Senator Margaret Chase Smith had previously run for the Republican presidential nomination in 1964).
Her campaign was poorly organized and underfunded from the start, only spending $300,000 in total. She also struggled to be regarded as a serious candidate instead of as a symbolic political figure; she was ignored by much of the Democratic political establishment and received little support from her black male colleagues. She later reiterated, "When I ran for the Congress, when I ran for president, I met more discrimination as a woman than for being black. Men are men." In particular, she expressed frustration about the "black matriarch thing", saying, "They think I am trying to take power from them. The black man must step forward, but that doesn't mean the black woman must step back." Her husband, however, was fully supportive of her candidacy and said, "I have no hangups about a woman running for president." Security was also a concern, as during the campaign three confirmed threats were made against her life; Conrad Chisholm served as her bodyguard until U.S. Secret Service protection was given to her in May 1972.
Chisholm skipped the initial March 7 New Hampshire contest, instead focusing on the March 14 Florida primary, which she thought would be receptive due to its "blacks, youth and a strong women's movement". But due to organizational difficulties and Congressional responsibilities, she only made two campaign swings there and ended with 3.5 percent of the vote for a seventh-place finish. Chisholm had difficulties gaining ballot access, but campaigned or received votes in primaries in fourteen states. Her largest number of votes came in the June 6 California primary, where she received 157,435 votes for 4.4 percent and a fourth-place finish, while her best percentage in a competitive primary came in the May 6 North Carolina one, where she got 7.5 percent for a third-place finish. Overall, she won 28 delegates during the primaries process itself. Chisholm's base of support was ethnically diverse and included the National Organization for Women. Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem attempted to run as Chisholm delegates in New York. Altogether during the primary season, she received 430,703 votes, which was 2.7 percent of the total of nearly 16 million cast and represented seventh place among the Democratic contenders.
At the 1972 Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach, Florida, there were still efforts taking place by the campaign of former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey to stop the nomination of Senator George McGovern. After that failed and McGovern's nomination was assured, as a symbolic gesture, Humphrey released his black delegates to Chisholm. This, combined with defections from disenchanted delegates from other candidates, as well as the delegates she had won in the primaries, gave her a total of 152 first-ballot votes for the nomination during the July 12 roll call. (Her precise total was 151.95.) Her largest support overall came from Ohio, with 23 delegates (slightly more than half of them white), even though she had not been on the ballot in the May 2 primary there. Her total gave her fourth place in the roll call tally, behind McGovern's winning total of 1,728 delegates. Chisholm said she ran for the office "in spite of hopeless odds ... to demonstrate the sheer will and refusal to accept the status quo." Among the volunteers who were inspired by her campaign was Barbara Lee, who continued to be politically active and was elected as a congresswoman 25 years later.
It is sometimes stated that Chisholm won a primary during 1972, or won three states overall, with New Jersey, Louisiana, and Mississippi being so identified. None of these fit the usual definition of winning a plurality of the contested popular vote or delegate allocations at the time of a state primary or caucus or state convention. In the June 6 New Jersey primary, there was a complex ballot that featured both a delegate selection vote and a non-binding, non-delegate-producing "beauty contest" presidential preference vote. In the delegate selection vote, Democratic front-runner Senator George McGovern defeated his main rival at that point, Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, and won the large share of available delegates. Most of the Democratic candidates were not on the preference ballot, including McGovern and Humphrey; of the two that were, Chisholm and former governor of North Carolina Terry Sanford, Sanford had withdrawn from the contest three weeks earlier. In the actual preference ballot voting, which the Associated Press described as "meaningless", Chisholm received the majority of votes: 51,433, which was 66.9 percent. During the actual balloting at the national convention, Chisholm received votes from only 4 of New Jersey's 109 delegates, with 89 going to McGovern. In the May 13 Louisiana caucuses, there was a battle between forces of McGovern and Governor George Wallace; nearly all of the delegates chosen were those who identified as uncommitted, many of them black. Leading up to the convention, McGovern was thought to control 20 of Louisiana's 44 delegates, with most of the rest uncommitted. During the actual roll call at the national convention, Louisiana passed at first, then cast 18½ of its 44 votes for Chisholm, with the next best finishers being McGovern and Senator Henry M. Jackson with 10¼ each. As one delegate explained, "Our strategy was to give Shirley our votes for sentimental reasons on the first ballot. However, if our votes would have made the difference, we would have gone with McGovern." In Mississippi, there were two rival party factions that each selected delegates at their own state conventions and caucuses: "regulars" representing the mostly white state Democratic Party and "loyalists" representing many blacks and white liberals. Each slate professed to be largely uncommitted, but the regulars were thought to favor Wallace and the loyalists McGovern. By the time of the national convention, the loyalists were seated following a credentials challenge, and their delegates were characterized as mostly supporting McGovern, with some support for Humphrey. During the convention, some McGovern delegates became angry about what they saw as statements from McGovern that backed away from his commitment to end U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia, and cast protest votes for Chisholm as a result. During the actual balloting, Mississippi went in the first half of the roll call, and cast 12 of its 25 votes for Chisholm, with McGovern coming next with 10 votes.
During the campaign the German filmmaker Peter Lilienthal shot the documentary film Shirley Chisholm for President for German Television channel ZDF.
Later terms
Chisholm created controversy when she visited rival and ideological opposite George Wallace in the hospital soon after his shooting in May 1972, during the 1972 presidential primary campaign. Several years later, when Chisholm worked on a bill to give domestic workers the right to a minimum wage, Wallace helped gain votes of enough Southern congressmen to push the legislation through the House.
From 1977 to 1981, during the 95th Congress and 96th Congress, Chisholm was elected to a position in the House Democratic leadership, as Secretary of the House Democratic Caucus.
Throughout her tenure in Congress, Chisholm worked to improve opportunities for inner-city residents. She was a vocal opponent of the draft and supported spending increases for education, health care and other social services, and reductions in military spending.
In the area of national security and foreign policy, Chisholm worked for the revocation of Internal Security Act of 1950. She opposed the American involvement in the Vietnam War and the expansion of weapon developments. During the Jimmy Carter administration, she called for better treatment of Haitian refugees.
Chisholm's first marriage ended in divorce in February 1977. Later that year she married Arthur Hardwick, Jr., a former New York State Assemblyman whom Chisholm had known when they both served in that body and who was now a Buffalo liquor store owner. Chisholm had no children.
Hardwick was subsequently injured in an automobile accident; desiring to take care of him, and also dissatisfied with the course of liberal politics in the wake of the Reagan Revolution, she announced her retirement from Congress in 1982. Hardwick died in 1986.
Subsequent years and death
After leaving Congress, Chisholm made her home in suburban Williamsville, New York. She resumed her career in education, being named to the Purington Chair at the all-women Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. As such she was not a member of any particular department, but would be able to teach classes in a variety of areas; those previously holding the position included W. H. Auden, Bertrand Russell, and Arna Bontemps.
At Mount Holyoke, she taught politics and sociology from 1983 to 1987. She focused on undergraduate courses that covered politics as it involved women and race. Dean of faculty Joseph Ellis later said that Chisholm "contributed to the vitality of the College and gave the College a presence." In 1985 she was a visiting scholar at Spelman College.
During those years, she continued to give speeches at colleges, by her own count visiting over 150 campuses since becoming nationally known. She told students to avoid polarization and intolerance: "If you don't accept others who are different, it means nothing that you've learned calculus." Continuing to be involved politically, she traveled to visit different minority groups and urging them to become a strong force at the local level. In 1984 and 1988, she campaigned for Jesse Jackson for the presidential elections. In 1990, Chisholm, along with 15 other African-American women and men, formed the African-American Women for Reproductive Freedom.
Chisholm retired to Florida in 1991. In 1993, President Bill Clinton nominated her to be United States Ambassador to Jamaica, but she could not serve due to poor health and the nomination was withdrawn. In the same year she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.
Chisholm died on January 1, 2005, in Ormond Beach near Daytona Beach, after suffering several strokes. She was buried in the Oakwood Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, where the legend inscribed on her vault reads: "Unbought and Unbossed".
Legacy
In February 2005, Shirley Chisholm '72: Unbought and Unbossed, a documentary film, aired on U.S public television. It chronicled Chisholm's 1972 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. It was directed and produced by independent African-American filmmaker Shola Lynch. The film was featured at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004. On April 9, 2006, the film was announced as a winner of a Peabody Award.
Chisholm's legacy came into renewed prominence during the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries, when Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton staged their historic 'firsts' battle – where the victor would either be the first major party African-American nominee, or the first woman nominee – with at least one observer crediting Chisholm's 1972 campaign as having paved the way for both of them.
The Shirley Chisholm Center for Research on Women exists at Brooklyn College to promote research projects and programs on women and to preserve the legacy of Chisholm. The college's library also houses an archive called the Shirley Chisholm Project on Brooklyn Women's Activism.
In 2014, the first adult biography of Chisholm was published, Shirley Chisholm: Catalyst for Change, by Brooklyn College history professor Barbara Winslow. Until then, only several juvenile biographies had appeared.
Chisholm's speech "For the Equal Rights Amendment", given in 1970, is listed as #91 in American Rhetoric's Top 100 Speeches of the 20th Century (listed by rank).

Book Synopsis:
One of the Best Books of the Year as chosen by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Economist, Time, USA TODAY, Christian Science Monitor, and more. “A tale so gripping that one questions the need for fiction when real life is so plump with drama and intrigue; (Associated Press).Doris Kearns Goodwin’s The Bully Pulpit is a dynamic history of the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air.The story is told through the intense friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft; a close relationship that strengthens both men before it ruptures in 1912, when they engage in a brutal fight for the presidential nomination that divides their wives, their children, and their closest friends, while crippling the progressive wing of the Republican Party, causing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to be elected, and changing the country’s history. The Bully Pulpit is also the story of the muckraking press, which arouses the spirit of reform that helps Roosevelt push the government to shed its laissez-faire attitude toward robber barons, corrupt politicians, and corporate exploiters of our natural resources. The muckrakers are portrayed through the greatest group of journalists ever assembled at one magazine; Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, Lincoln Steffens, and William Allen White; teamed under the mercurial genius of publisher S.S. McClure.Goodwin’s narrative is founded upon a wealth of primary materials. The correspondence of more than four hundred letters between Roosevelt and Taft begins in their early thirties and ends only months before Roosevelt’s death. Edith Roosevelt and Nellie Taft kept diaries. The muckrakers wrote hundreds of letters to one another, kept journals, and wrote their memoirs. The letters of Captain Archie Butt, who served as a personal aide to both Roosevelt and Taft, provide an intimate view of both men.The Bully Pulpit, like Goodwin’s brilliant chronicles of the Civil War and World War II, exquisitely demonstrates her distinctive ability to combine scholarly rigor with accessibility. It is a major work of history; an examination of leadership in a rare moment of activism and reform that brought the country closer to its founding ideals. LUCY GOES HAWAIIAN: PART ONE
S3;E23 ~ February 15, 1971
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Directed by Jack Donohue ~ Written by Milt Josefsberg, Ray Singer, and Al Schwartz
Synopsis
Harry takes an usual job as a cruise director and recruits Lucy to be his unpaid assistant. Also on board are her kids and her old friend Vivian Jones (Vivian Vance). A shipboard rivalry erupts when Lucy and Vivian are both attracted to the handsome Captain (Robert Alda).
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carter), Gale Gordon (Harrison Otis Carter), Lucie Arnaz (Kim Carter), Desi Arnaz Jr. (Craig Carter)
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Vivian Vance (Vivian Jones) was born Vivian Roberta Jones in Cherryvale, Kansas in 1909, although her family quickly moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she was raised. She had extensive theatre experience, co-starring on Broadway with Ethel Merman in Anything Goes. She was acting in a play in Southern California when she was spotted by Desi Arnaz and hired to play Ethel Mertz, Lucy Ricardo’s neighbor and best friend. The pairing is credited with much of the success of “I Love Lucy.”  Vance was convinced to join the cast of “The Lucy Show” in 1962, but stayed with the series only through season three, making occasional guest appearances afterwards. This is the fourth of her half a dozen appearances on “Here’s Lucy.” She also joined Lucy for a TV special “Lucy Calls the President” in 1977. Vance died two years later.
This is Vivian’s sixth cruise. She is unmarried.
Tumblr media
Robert Alda (Captain MacClay) originated the role of Sky Masterson in Broadway’s Guys and Dolls, winning the 1951 Tony Award. He is the father of Alan Alda of “M*A*S*H” fame. He made one appearance on the “The Lucy Show,” and this is his final appearance on “Here's Lucy.” Alda died in 1986.
Tumblr media
Jean Byron (Mrs. MacCLay) is probably best remembered as Natalie Lane, mother of Patty Duke on “The Patty Duke Show” (1963-66) as well as well as Imogene Burkhart on “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis” (1959-63). This is her only appearance with Lucille Ball.
The surname MacClay is a tribute to Lucille Ball's long-time publicist Howard McClay, who also loaned his name to characters on “The Lucy Show.” The end credits, however, spell 'McClay' as 'MacClay.'
Tumblr media
Anita Mann (Wendy) was assistant to the series' choreographer Jack Baker. This (and Part Two) are her only appearances of record on the show. She later choreographed for the Solid Gold Dancers and the Muppets. Mann won an Emmy Award for her work in 1996.
Mann plays a bikini-clad blonde that Craig befriends aboard ship. Although credited as 'Wendy,' she is not identified by name in the dialogue.
Tumblr media
Maurice Kelly (Sailor) was an English-born actor who played a student in “Lucy and Viv Take Up Chemistry” (TLS S1;E26). This is the second of his three appearances on “Here’s Lucy.” He died at the young age of 46 in 1974.
The ship's passengers and crew are played by uncredited background performers:
Nick Borgani appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1937 film Stage Door and in one episode of “The Lucy Show.”
Paul Bradley made his six appearances on “The Lucy Show” in various roles. This is the second of his two episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
George DeNormand appeared in three films with Lucille Ball from 1937 to 1963. This is just one of his many appearances on “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.”
James Gonzales was a popular Hollywood extra who first acted with Lucille Ball in the 1953 The Long, Long Trailer. He was previously seen on “The Lucy Show” as Stan Williams in “Lucy Digs Up a Date” (TLS S1;E2). He was seen in more than 20 episodes of “The Lucy Show” and 3 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
Chester Jones makes the last of his four background appearances on “Here’s Lucy.”
Paul King makes the third of his five background appearances on the series.
Victor Romito was seen as the Bartender in “Lucy Meets John Wayne” (TLS S5;E10). He also appeared in four episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”  Romito was an extra in the 1960 Lucille Ball / Bob Hope film Critic’s Choice.
Bernard Sell was an English-born background player who made three appearance on the “The Lucy Show.” He was also an extra with Lucille Ball and Bob Hope in their films The Facts of Life (1960) and Critic’s Choice (1963).
Tumblr media
This episode was first aired on February 15, 1971, which was Mary Jane Croft's 55th birthday. Although not in this episode, Croft will make her tenth of thirty appearances when the program resumes production for season four.
The final draft of this script is date March 30, 1970. A copy was donated by the estate of writer Milt Josefsberg to the Thousand Oaks Library’s American Radio Archives.
Tumblr media
Coincidentally, March 30, 1970 also saw the first broadcast of an episode of “Mayberry RFD” titled “Aloha, Goober”! In it, Goober’s Mayberry service station is competing to win a trip to Hawaii.
Tumblr media
The title of the episode(s) was doubtless inspired by the 1961 feature film Gidget Goes Hawaiian starring Deborah Walley. Walley would later be a regular on Desi Arnaz series “The Mothers-in-Law” (1967-69). The film also features a character named Lucy (played by Vivian Marshall).
Tumblr media
Originally, the two episodes were to be filmed aboard the actual SS Lurline and on location in Hawaii. When costs proved prohibitive, Lucille Ball Productions had a three-quarter scale model of the ship built on the Paramount lot. At the time, it was the second largest ship ever built at the studio. The sets occupied three sound stages. It even included a real swimming pool!
Tumblr media
These two episodes were a single-camera shoot and filmed without a live studio audience. Establishing shots of the ship and some dockside location shots were also used.
Tumblr media
Hawaii was a favorite getaway destination of the Arnaz family. The Season 3 “Here’s Lucy” DVD contains home movie footage of the family (and friends like Mary Wickes) vacationing together in Hawaii.
Tumblr media
In 2007, Lucie Arnaz remembered their trips to Hawaii fondly:
"It was before my parents were divorced and the time when they were at their happiest. No arguing, no work to take them away, and they just loved being there and with each other.”
Tumblr media
The SS Lurline was a real ship sailing from California to Hawaii for the Matson Steamship line from 1932 to 1963, when it was sold to the Chandris Lines and re-christened the RHMS Ellinis. The Matson Line then brought the Matsonia (first known as the Monterey) out of retirement and re-christened it the Lurline, keeping the historic name alive in their fleet. The Lurline sailed her last voyage under this name in June 1970, before being sold to Chandris and re-christened Britanis. During the 1980s it was briefly the oldest cruise ship in service. The vessel underwent one more name and ownership change before being deliberately sunk in 2000 after nearly 68 years at sea.
Tumblr media
The episode incorporates some establishing locations shots of the Lurline departing from San Francisco with the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.
Tumblr media
There is also a location shot of Lucy standing on the dock taking photographs, although this is probably a double for Lucille Ball. With the distance, the streamers, and the camera in front of her face, it is difficult to tell for certain.
Tumblr media
The final draft of the script for this episode was dated March 30, 1970, ten months before it was aired in mid-February 1971. Because the Lurline sailed for the last time on June 25, 1970, the establishing shots had to have been filmed during April, May or June 1970.
Tumblr media
Harry pronounces Hawaii as 'Havaii' (with a 'v' sound instead of a 'w'). He also pronounces Los Angeles with a hard 'g.' Harry was a linguistic eccentric!
Tumblr media
Lucy says the ideal candidate for the cruise director position will be a combination of Cary Grant, Albert Einstein, Joe Namath, and Bob Hope. Lucille Ball did four films with Bob Hope and he appeared on both “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show.” Football player turned entertainer Joe Namath will guest star in a season 5 episode of “Here's Lucy.” Cary Grant has been mentioned on all of Ball's sitcoms, including the previous episode “Lucy and Carol Burnett” (S3;E22).
Tumblr media
When Vivian burst through the crowd, the production anticipates the home viewers reaction by inserting canned applause!  In previous episodes filmed in front of a live studio audience, this was their natural reaction, so one is used here as well. Even the background actors seem happy to see Viv, a character not seen on the series since “Lucy and Viv Visit Tijuana” (S2;E19) a year earlier.
Tumblr media
Among the many games and sports items that Assistant Cruise Director Lucy carries is Hasbro’s Automatic Bingo, first manufactured in 1969. Bingo is a mainstay of cruise ship pastimes.
Lucy asks Viv if she is still looking to get married:
Tumblr media
VIV: “I dream about orange blossoms so often I sleep with a smudge pot at the foot of my bed.”
Dreams about orange blossoms are said to indicate the search for true love. In orange groves, a smudge pot warms the trees to prevent the fruit from being spoiled by frost and cold weather.
Tumblr media
Lucy convinces Harry to disguise himself as rich southerner Colonel Hamilton Hart to woo Vivian away from the Captain MacClay. Harry's make up and wardrobe are identical to Colonel Harlan Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame!
Tumblr media
A montage of Lucy being kept busy shows her jogging, shooting skeet, playing tennis, and playing ping-pong.
Tumblr media
Jumping overboard may be the most extreme example ever of ‘getting Harry wet’ at the end of an episode.
Tumblr media
VIVIAN: “Let me through! Let me through! There's only one person in the whole world who would board ship that way!  It's gotta be... Lucy!”
Tumblr media
Boarding ship via the cargo net was a stunt Lucille Ball also did in “Lucy Takes A Cruise To Havana” (LDCH S1;E1) with Ann Sothern at her side - instead of Gale Gordon under her feet!
Tumblr media
Another unconventional boarding was in "Bon Voyage" (ILL S5;E13), where Lucy Ricardo missed her sailing for Europe on the S.S. Constitution and was lowered by helicopter to the deck.
Tumblr media
Assistant Cruise Director Lucy briefly plays ping-pong with a young boy, just as Lucy Ricardo did on the SS Constitution with Kenneth Hamilton. She first looked for a ping-pong partner by asking an idle bloodhound!
Tumblr media
In 1955, Desilu recreated the SS Constitution on their Hollywood sound stage the same way LBP does the SS Lurline in 1971. Both episodes were filmed with the cooperation of the shipping lines, American Export Lines (1955) and Matson Steamship Lines (1970). Both were the most expensive episodes filmed to that date due to construction costs.
Tumblr media
In “Ricky's Hawaiian Vacation” (ILL S3;E22), Lucy Ricardo pulled out all the stops, including recreating island life in the living room in order to get Ricky to take her along on his booking at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu. When Ricky says no, Lucy schemes to go along by winning a TV quiz show with the Mertzes, but in the end they don’t win the trip. We never learn if Ricky actually went to Hawaii or not.
Tumblr media
ETHEL (about the idea of going on a quiz show): “I’d get a pie in my face. She’d get an all-expense cruise.”
It took nearly 16 years, but Lucy and Viv finally got that all-expense paid cruise to Hawaii. But she also did get a pie in the face at the end of the show!
Tumblr media
If being Viv being heroically rescued from a swimming pool while pretending she can’t swim sounds familiar, Lucy Ricardo also did it in “The Hedda Hopper Story” (ILL S4;E21).
Tumblr media
In the 1955 episode, Freddie Fillmore mentioned a former contestant named Cleo Morgan, which was the name of Lucille Ball’s cousin. She was later the producer of these two episodes of “Here’s Lucy” under her married name of Cleo Smith.
Tumblr media
On February 18, 1965, the Douglas family on “My Three Sons” planned a "Hawaiian Cruise” (S5;E23), but illness forced the trip to be canceled. Uncle Charley decides if they cannot go to Hawaii, then Hawaii would come to them and he plans a luau in the backyard.
FAST FORWARD!
In the 1970s and 1980s sitcoms took their cue from Lucy and also traveled to Hawaii.
Tumblr media
Probably the most famous of the shows was “The Brady Bunch”, which aired on ABC in 1972, just a year after Lucy’s trip. It, too, was a two-parter. Coincidentally, Eve Plumb (Jan Brady) also played Lucy Carter’s niece Patricia Carter later on in 1972!
Tumblr media
In 1980, also on CBS, “The Jeffersons” traveled to the 50th state. Instead of two parts, the show increased their stay to four half-hours!  The cast featured an actor named Fred Ball (no relation to Lucille Ball’s brother)!
Tumblr media
Hawaii was mention several times on the short lived “Life With Lucy” (1987). In the first episode, Curtis had just returned from vacationing there and in the second episode guest star John Ritter says that his wife is in Hawaii with the kids. In an un-aired episode, Leonard plans to use his vacation from M&B Hardward to go to Hawaii and lie on the beach.
Tumblr media
“Mama Goes Hawaiian” (1988) was also a two-part episode about a Hawaiian vacation. It starred Lucy’s protege Ken Berry and her pal Carol Burnett’s protege, Vicki Lawrence, as Mama.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Props! When setting down a large stack of games so she can sit down for a minute, Lucille Ball is so worried that the stack will fall off the deck chair that she keeps her hand nearby to catch them if they do.
Tumblr media
Doff Your Hat! When ‘the Colonel’ sits down next to Vivian, he removes his hat and places it on the table. Realizing that this is improper (and that the hat might be in the camera shot) he uses his walking stick to smoothly sweep the hat off the table onto the chair below it. Quick thinking!
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes Hawaiian: Part One” rates 3 Paper Hearts out of 5
This episode is full of Easter eggs for “Lucy” fans with references to four different episodes of “I Love Lucy.” This feels like a cross between “The Love Boat” and “The Golden Girls.”  The ending with Harry and Viv both jumping overboard into the Pacific Ocean - at night - is a bit far-fetched, even for Lucy!

‘What it is to Yearn’ Chapter 3: A Love Most Ardent
The final chapter is here, y’all! I’m so happy you’ve all enjoyed it!
Thank you to @mychakk for prompting this lovely story to flow from my fingertips!
Songs That Inspired This Chapter:
All I Need - Within Temptation
Clockwork (Piano Version) - Sleeping At Last
John Watson looked on as Molly and Sherlock examined the corpse upon the slab. He could not deny that they have always worked incredibly well together, but something was different in their interactions now. Sherlock never chastised her as he used to long before their courtship and eventual marriage. He remembered when his best friend first spoke of courting the petite pathologist.
“I have decided to embark in a courtship with Doctor Hooper,” Sherlock informed him.
“I thought you were never venturing down that road, Holmes,” John replied in shock.
“It is the only logical decision to help us both out,” Sherlock explained. “She will be able to keep her position at the hospital and I won’t have to deal with Irene’s advances or my parents’ complaints ever again.”
“Ah, you’re a romantic then,” John remarked sarcastically.
“Hardly,” Sherlock responded. “Besides, if I were to choose a wife, Doctor Hooper is well suited to my tastes. She can hold an intelligent conversation, her career choice intertwines with my own and we get along well enough.” John only sighed. There was no chance that Molly would accept this offer without any amount of fondness involved.
“It is in fact poison, dearest husband,” Molly informed Sherlock a bit smugly. “Here, you can see the points of entry from the needle. The gruesome mutilation of this man was only to cover up how he truly died.”
“There is always one thing,” Sherlock muttered to himself in frustration at having overlooked that. He blamed it on his wife, of course, for he could not stop looking at her in awe as she finished up the autopsy. Things he noticed about her in complete concentration was how focused her deep brown eyes were and the way she bit her bottom lip when studying the cadaver closely. During this time, Sherlock was supposed to be scanning the corpse for any clues. Sherlock mentally scolded himself for letting such a thing slip away from him. Which thing he did not know; whether it was that he allowed her presence to be a distraction or the fact that he never truly noticed how lovely his wife is. He decided on both.
“Ready to leave, Sherlock? We must meet Lestrade,” John asked.
“Yes,” Sherlock replied, shaking the thoughts from his head. He began to follow John out of the morgue, but upon realization, turned around and pressed a kiss upon his wife’s cheek. He noticed how his heart beat wildly in his chest, the only conclusion coming to his mind of a truth that has been around for a long time; much longer than he realized. “I will see you at Baker Street, my darling.” With that, he swept out of the morgue, leaving Molly in utter surprise.
“You alright, Holmes?” John asked his best friend. It was unlike him to miss such a deduction.
“I have been a fool,” Sherlock sighed. John’s eyebrows shot up with curiosity.
               “Go on,” John encouraged.
“I am distracted yes, but not because of her; it is because of me,” Sherlock explained.
“How so?” John asked, full well knowing the answer.
“I have always felt the same about her as she does for me,” Sherlock admitted. “I am only distracted because I had refused to acknowledge it and now it haunts me.”
Molly arrived home to the melancholy melody of the Stradivarius. Something was bothering him, she knew, but did not want to pry. She opted to lay a gentle hand upon his shoulder in concern before turning toward the bedroom. Stripped down only to her corset and chemise, she took the journal out of the nightstand on her side of the bed.
Wednesday, October 16th 1895
I am beginning to feel that things have changed, indeed. As to what caused it, I do not know, but I do know that I have not been happier. I often wonder if he knows the depth of my love for him. If not, I intend to let it be known. No longer will I wait for him to initiate anything; I will give it a try myself to see his response. How I have longed to feel his lips upon mine once more, for I have not felt them since our day of holy matrimony. The melody he is playing on his violin leads me to believe his heart is aching. It is a most saddening song filled with longing and desire. Perhaps he feels what I feel. The wistfulness of his composition leads me to believe so. I no longer want him to feel this way; he must know how I love and cherish him. Wish yourself luck, Margaret Elizabeth Holmes.
Molly prepared a warm meal for the both of them and they ate in companionable silence. Sherlock insisted that he would take care of the dishes, pointing out she had had a trying day at the hospital. She thanked him before returning to the bedroom, nearly ready to turn in for the night, until a letter on the bed caught her eye. It simply said ‘Molly’ on the envelope. She lifted the candle from her nightstand and opened it up. It was written in her husband’s hand.
Molly, my beloved,
I know I have been a less than desirable husband and for that, there is no excuse. I am sorry if I have hurt you in any way. I realize now that I have been a fool. I hope you can forgive me for my cruel ways, for it was not my intention to be the reason you cry yourself to sleep at night. I only wish to hold you close to me and comfort you. I would like to kiss you properly but I fear you will reject me after all of the pain I have put you through. I would not blame you if you were to push me away. My darling, I love you and have always loved you. My heart is yours completely. I am sorry that I never acknowledged this fact, for I did not want to partake in romantic entanglements. The truth is, loving you was only a distraction because I had never told you the truth of my heart; however nonexistent it may be. I pushed and pushed you away from me and I fear you do not quite love me any longer. I yearn for your lips, your gentle touch and the loving words that escape your mouth with that lovely voice of yours. I will say it again and I will say it for the rest of our lives. I love you. I love you. I love you. Please say you love me too.
Always yours,
               William S.S. Holmes
Molly’s eyes were flooded with tears at the words he had written her. Her head lifted up to find him in the doorway, a look of pure adoration on his face. His brows furrowed with worry but his cerulean eyes shone with a love that Molly had never seen before. She set the candle back down for fear of dropping it on her corset and chemise. He stepped closer until he was able to caress her cheek with his callused hand. Molly leaned into his warm touch as he wiped the tears from her cheeks.
“Oh, dear Lord,” he spoke softly. “I am in love with you, Molly. My darling.” She did not wait a second longer before pressing her lips against his fervently. Sherlock savored the taste of her lips as he slid his tongue along the seam of them. Their kiss deepened and their passion grew as he trailed down her jaw toward her neck. She felt him nibbling along her pulse point carefully, sending a wave of pleasure through her.
“I love you,” she breathed out, her heart nearly beating out of her chest. The warmth of his lips were suddenly atop her breasts, caressing her tenderly. He kissed her lips once more, moving her to lie against the pillows.
“Forgive me,” he whispered in her ear.
“I do, my love. I forgive you,” Molly smiled up at him.
As they held one another, Molly’s face buried in the crook of his neck, Sherlock felt the completeness that he was once told by his best friend he would feel if he would just let love in. His gaze roamed over the sleeping form of his wife in awe. He pressed his lips in her hair softly, drifting to sleep as they remained tangled with one another. Sherlock knew what it was to yearn and he never wanted to forget the way he felt tonight.
