hi, i was reading ur other posts and got from it that u might be a professor? i was wondering what it is you studied & ur thoughts on academia & entering it.
i'm a doctoral candidate in history so i can't speak much to stem fields and i haven't yet had to properly face the academic job market. you might be interested in some of the posts in my tagged/academia
academic work occupies a slightly odd place in a lot of public discourse because on the one hand there are many people who configure it on ideal terms as a force of enlightenment, social improvement, and self-actualisation for both student and professor. on the other hand there are those within academia (or, often, recently exiled from it) who went in with those sorts of high-minded expectations, had their dreams shattered, and now portray academic labour as uniquely or excessively exploited, monetised, and exhausting. in regards to the first group i would respond that academics work for institutions that exist to enforce hegemonic power structures; to uphold class hierarchies and the illusion of meritocratic social mobility; and to profit from the restriction of access to knowledge and debate. in regards to the second group i would say that academics are exploited by the same labour relations as any other workers in a capitalist system; that we, like all other workers, should be agitating for liberation not just for ourselves; and that this means the abolition of the university as the institution that we now know, as well as the class barriers it erects and enforces.
i can't really tell anyone whether they should go into academia or not. certainly there are things i like about it: for one, i do feel a sense that i 'get' to spend a lot of my working time reading and writing about things that i find genuinely interesting and that i think are valuable to share and study. the material benefits of having a white-collar / desk job are also real.
however, it is also true that academic jobs involve affiliations with institutions that are by nature capitalist, colonialist, exclusionary & élitist; and that the degree of security and financial stability you get from these jobs will vary widely between fields and positions (the vast majority of people who earn a phd will never become tenured professors). teaching and research are really two different jobs often bundled into one, and each presenting their own challenges. many of the things that suck about academia suck about work in general: interpersonal abuse is rife in academia and both created and enabled by its hierarchical nature and reliance on networking; it's virtually impossible to get any accommodations if you are disabled; unis are hostile to marginalised people and groups both internally and externally; you may not like your research, or even find what you do all day to be pointless, useless, or meaningless; if you have any kind of genuinely communist commitments then these will always and inherently be at odds with the institution you now rely on to survive, and that conflict continually stymies the production of radical and revolutionary theory and scholarship.
ultimately academic jobs are jobs, with all of the exploitation and baggage that entails. i think there are people who have produced, or are producing, work that is genuinely valuable, insightful, incisive, and so forth, from within the university. however, that's not what the institution is there for, it's something you have to constantly fight for and for which you may very well be professionally punished, and you should never let anyone tell you the university is the only path, or even a cooperative or altruistic path, toward doing such work, if that's what you want to do.

⟢ - Structure of the 𝐀𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
Tumblr media
The 𝐀𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 operates as a corporation and trust, funding research for various fields of scientific study through grants. It also engages in many different charitable acts related to the rehabilitation and conservation of endangered Pokémon, especially those native to the islands of Alola.
The corporation was founded by current sitting president and CEO, Lusamine Delacroix, with her husband, Mohn Delacroix, serving as vice president until his disappearance. The pair set out to establish a higher standard for how humans, Pokémon and technology can work with one another, while benefiting the natural ecosystems. Aether works alongside many different organizations throughout, and outside of, Alola.
Fields of Interest
The foundation funds projects, research, innovations and expeditions related, but not limited to, conservation, ecology, biochemistry, physics, epidemiology, genetic engineering, and computer engineering. Scientists and scholars from across the globe often seek out the foundation’s funding, traveling to the Aether Paradise in order to meet with members of the board, and Lusamine herself. There is quite the impressive network of intellects connected to the foundation, and it is not unusual to see the Aether seal stamped onto many peer reviewed journals.
Grants and scholarships for students pursuing careers in STEM are also gifted by the Aether Foundation. Many of these students are then placed into internships at the paradise, or in one of the Aether Houses— and funneled into a permanent position of employment upon graduation. The foundation relies on having the most brilliant, cunning minds involved with their projects, and so they make sure to leave a good impression on the scientific community. It is pretty common to see an Aether representative at any major conference involving STEM, or around university campuses.
Working for the Aether Foundation
Employment with the Aether Foundation ranges across different positions— from field researchers, to chemists, to public relations, and many, many more. Those who work at the Aether Paradise work directly with Aether’s conservation programs, vaccination developments, and technology departments. And the genetics program and UB project, if you’re aware of the horrors.
Gaining employment, however, is no simple task. Lusamine expects an impressive resume, and a mind to match, but if somebody passes the hiring process, it is great job security— as long as they do not disappoint her.
All employees are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement upon being hired. All positions are by contract, and salary paid.
All employees are required to submit their biometrics.
The hierarchy
From highest to lowest:
President
Vice President (currently unoccupied)
Branch Manager
Assistant Branch Manager
Divisional Manager
Assistant Divisional Manager
Office Administration
Lead Associate
Associate
Intern
Scientists and research teams are categorized and ranked based on individual projects and assignments.
Accessing the Aether Paradise
If commuting to work, employees have two options: traveling across the water from one of the islands via Aether-owned ferry service, or by helicopter. The ferry service also carries tourists on public access days, so that they can experience the conservation deck, and tour the island.
Aether offers on-site dorms for those who would rather not commute back and forth all week, and for those who are staying on the artificial for an extended period of time for an assignment.
Security
Security is taken very seriously on the island; Lusamine is incredibly strict about it, and intends on keeping it that way.
All employees are assigned key cards, which are required to access all of the rooms and laboratories on the floors one through three.
All of the laboratories and doors on floor three, and in basements 1, 2 and 3 require a fingerprint and retina scan.
Certain high-security areas require two or three employees to use fingerprint or retina scan in order to unlock the door for access.
Higher ranked foundation members and scientists have a chip implanted in their left wrist, which is used as a “master key” to access everything on the Aether Paradise, along with the locks for the Aether House and research stations.
Basements 1, 2 and 3 have safety laser scanners installed that are programmed to scan every room, laboratory and corridor every fifteen minutes. If a persons whose biometrics have not been logged into Aether’s system is picked upon, an alarm goes off, and all doors are locked. Only Aether security guards, or high ranked foundation members, are capable of unlocking the doors in order to remove the intruder.
ALL points of the Aether Paradise have motion sensing cameras and CCTV streaming.
Aether buildings are known for their monochrome coloring and bright fluorescent lights. This is to prevent employees and visitors from finding dark or secluded corners to hide in, and discourages people from attempting to smuggle Aether property. It also makes it easy for visitors to be picked up on by the security cameras; everybody on staff is wearing all white, so somebody who is wearing even the slightest bit of color stands out.
In the case of an emergency, the Aether Paradise is capable of undergoing full lockdown mode. All incoming boats and aircraft are instructed to return to the mainland, and all outgoing forms of transportation are halted.

What sorts of funding are available for PhD students in Germany/the EU? I'm only familiar with the US system and I'm curious. Thanks!
This depends from country to country!
In Germany, as far as I can tell, there's basically fuck all at least outside STEM. If you're in STEM there's usually some sort of industry scholarship or grant. There's also some select few scholarships if you're a member of a political party or religion. Tuition fees are low or non-existent in Germany (there's usually a semester fee but no actual tuition fee in the American sense) but, you know, cost of living.
Some countries don't have tuition fees at all like Finland but the scholarship opportunities seem to be rare as well.
In the UK, there's student loans and scholarships and grants as long as you're a UK citizen. As an EU student I'd be paying at least 26k a year with the highest scholarship I'd be eligible for only covering 4.5k.
In Ireland there's internal scholarship and Irish Research Council Funding, which I'm hoping to receive. IRC funding would cover my tuition fees (roughly 5k a year) and cost of living at around minimum wage level (better than nothing).
It really depends on the country, university and your own citizenship tbh.

Scholarship For Foreign Students
Scholarships for foreign students in the USA provide valuable financial support for international students pursuing their education in the United States. These scholarships aim to promote diversity, cultural exchange, and academic excellence among the student population. Here is some information about scholarships available for foreign students in the USA:
Fulbright Foreign Student Program: The Fulbright Program is a prestigious scholarship program that offers fully funded scholarships for graduate-level study, research, or teaching assistantships at U.S. universities. It is open to students from various countries and disciplines, promoting international understanding and collaboration.
University Scholarships: Many universities in the United States offer scholarships specifically for international students. These scholarships can be merit-based, need-based, or a combination of both. They cover a range of expenses, including tuition fees, room and board, and sometimes additional allowances. Each university has its own scholarship programs, eligibility criteria, and application processes, so it's important to research individual university websites for available opportunities.
Government-funded Scholarships: The U.S. government, as well as various U.S. government agencies, offer scholarships for foreign students. These scholarships may be awarded based on academic merit, specific fields of study, or cultural exchange programs. Examples include the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program, the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (UGRAD), and the Critical Language Scholarship Program.
Private Foundations and Organizations: Numerous private foundations, nonprofits, and organizations in the United States provide scholarships for international students. These scholarships are often aimed at promoting education, fostering international collaboration, and supporting talented individuals. Examples include the Soros Foundation's Open Society Foundations, the Rotary Foundation Global Grant, and the Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Program.
Field-specific Scholarships: Many professional associations, industry organizations, and research institutions in the United States offer scholarships for international students pursuing degrees in specific academic disciplines. These scholarships are designed to support exceptional students in fields such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), business, arts, and social sciences.
Cultural Exchange Programs: Various cultural exchange programs provide scholarships for international students to study or intern in the United States. These programs promote intercultural understanding and offer financial support to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Examples include the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program.
When applying for scholarships as a foreign student in the USA, it is crucial to carefully review the eligibility criteria, deadlines, and application requirements for each scholarship. Prepare a strong application that highlights your academic achievements, leadership skills, extracurricular involvement, and personal statement. Seek guidance from educational advisors, utilize scholarship search engines, and explore resources provided by your home country's embassy or educational institutions. The competition for scholarships can be intense, so it's important to start your search early, apply to multiple scholarships, and stay organized throughout the application process.

Earning a Bold.org Scholarship
Dear Reader,
Like many high school and college students, I needed to finance my higher education. One method was to apply for scholarships. I have tried several scholarship websites, including Niche, ScholarshipOwl, Unigo, and StudentScholarships. However, Bold.org remains superior because the process is quick and easy. While the other sites usually send you to another link to apply, Bold lets you apply directly, so there is no middleman.
The first and fastest way I find scholarships on Bold is through the Notifications tab at the top right corner. There, I can see scholarships that have just been published. At a glance, I can tell which scholarship will apply to me based on the title.
If I want to look deeper, I can go through the Scholarships tab in the top middle section. Then, I go to All Scholarships and narrow my searches to Undergraduate for Education Level, Education for Category (select your major), Open for Status, and Newest for the Sort by option. When I click search, I can see a list of scholarships and a brief description of the intended population (type of student, major, career, etc). I can even check the box for No-Essay Only because sometimes, I do not want to write an essay for a scholarship. Fortunately, not all scholarships require an essay. For other sites, no-essay scholarships are luck-dependent. When you apply on Bold, you must also submit your profile. Hence, donors can see your biography, essays and awards, education, career goals, sports, research, arts, public services, and future interests. Therefore, you have a higher chance of winning!
If I want to browse through more lists, I can scroll down on the same page and find scholarships by state, demographics, year, major, and other types of scholarships. There are also lists for undergraduate students, high school students, graduate students, international students, minority students, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) students, local students, women, athletes, and more. There is definitely a scholarship out there that pertains to you because some scholarships are available for any kind of student (but that means the competition will be higher)!
Applying for scholarships is a numbers game. I have applied to over 200 scholarships on this platform, winning one scholarship and becoming a finalist for four scholarships (another benefit of using Bold is knowing whether you were close to winning because most sites do not provide this information!). Winning another scholarship would mean that all my hard has paid off, and quitting after submitting 100 applications would not have led me to this victory. Getting chosen as a winner would also mean that I am one step closer to graduating from college debt-free. Most importantly, being awarded the money would mean that I can invest in my future students' education. Maybe one day, I can return the favor and support a fellow aspiring teacher financially.
Sincerely, Kayla (https://bold.org/students/kayla/#application-to-great-education-grants-rewards-for-all-close-deadlines)

Signs you’ve taken “female empowerment” too far:
A majority of my life was lived as female. I am, and always have been, very interested in science. As a kid, I did these science camps over the summers. Here’s the thing, though- a vast majority of them were “girls” only. It was an attempt to have a dedicated space for “girls” who were interested in science. I spent time in a lot of “girls” only spaces. So I spent a lot of time around “girls rule boys drool” and “boys are dumb and gross” type stuff. Oh, “girls mature faster!” stuff, everywhere was so saturated with it. All this “empowering girls” type of thing. For all that time, I was steeped in misandry. Well-intentioned, but still very much misandry. The problem arose when, after getting older and starting to exist in more diverse spaces, I started to realize that I maybe was not as strictly female as I had thought. As anyone has thought. I never learned transphobia. Never knew trans people existed, for the longest time, but I never thought anything negative about being transgender. About being a boy, though, even boy-adjacent? Me? A gross, dirty, dumb, noisy boy? No, never. The things I’d spent my life steeping in, all those ideas I’d internalized without really even realizing it, never hurt anyone else by my hand. But me? It took me months to accept that I might be even sort of masculinely gendered even a little of the time. I’m still working through that. I still get gendered as female. If someone doesn’t know me, it’s more than likely that they’ll use she/her exclusively for me. Hell, people who do know me do it frequently. 90% of the time when I say that I use any pronouns (which I do!) people will use she/her only, maybe she/they if I’m lucky. In the past year, I’ve started saying I use he/they when I introduce myself. Most people still default to feminine language for me, but at least more of the ones I’ve gotten to introduce myself to use masculine and neutral terms. But I tried, so desperately, to change the perception of me. Last week was the first time I’ve painted my nails in ages, hadn’t done it since before I came out as far as I remember. To make them stop trying to bind me in that box I’d just escaped. No matter how much I started to accept the masculine aspects of my gender the world would be there trying to shove me back in the closet, because girls rule and boys drool. Because why would I ever want to be a boy? Why would I ever want the world to lose such a good potential female role model, who’s so good at science and math? Why would I ever want to lose the opportunities given only to women in STEM, the scholarships, the awards, designed to encourage girls? I didn’t. I don’t. I’m not male, I don’t want to take away someone people can look up to, I don’t want to lose the recognition for my achievements. I’m staying, at least officially, fully female until I graduate at least, because it means I can get a chance at more scholarships. Means that I can be recognized for taking as many science courses as possible. Means that I’m not sacrificing opportunities. No, instead I’m sacrificing who I am. Giving myself up, because the world is so focused on empowering women that people who stand outside the bounds they’ve set that we’re left choosing between ourselves and our futures. I have seen no recognition for transgender people choosing the sciences. I have seen no scholarships for nonbinary students. I have seen no science summer camps for the outliers. No spaces for me, genuinely. Just for the me they want. Just for the girl who likes science. No spaces to empower me. Just spaces to empower women, without regard to the damage it can do to trans folks.

Types of Scholarships to Study in the USA
There are several types of scholarships available for international students, each with its own eligibility criteria and application requirements. The following are some of the most common scholarship categories:
1. Merit-Based Scholarships
Merit-based scholarships are awarded to students with excellent academic records or outstanding performance in extracurricular activities. These scholarships are competitive and often require high standardized test scores, such as the SAT, GRE, or GMAT, along with strong academic credentials.
Examples of merit-based scholarships include:
Fulbright Foreign Student Program: One of the most prestigious scholarships, it covers tuition, living expenses, and travel for international students pursuing a master’s or PhD.
AAUW International Fellowships: This fellowship supports women pursuing graduate or postgraduate studies in the USA.
2. Need-Based Scholarships
Need-based scholarships are provided to students who demonstrate financial need. To qualify, students must provide financial documentation to prove that they cannot afford the cost of studying in the USA.
Examples include:
Harvard University Need-Based Scholarship: Harvard offers substantial financial aid to international students based on their family’s financial situation.
The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program: This program offers financial aid to students from developing countries who wish to study in the USA.
3. University-Specific Scholarships
Many universities offer their own scholarships specifically for international students. These scholarships can be either merit-based or need-based, and the eligibility criteria vary depending on the university.
Examples include:
Stanford University Scholarships: Stanford provides financial aid and fellowships to international students pursuing undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate degrees.
Yale University Scholarships: Yale offers a range of financial aid options based on academic merit and financial need.
4. Subject-Specific Scholarships
Subject-specific scholarships are offered to students pursuing degrees in specific fields, such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) or the arts. These scholarships encourage students to enter high-demand industries.
Examples include:
Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program: Aimed at professionals from developing countries, this program provides non-degree fellowships in fields such as public health, education, and environmental management.
TATA Scholarship for Cornell University: This scholarship supports Indian students pursuing undergraduate studies at Cornell, especially those with a focus on technology and innovation.
How to Apply for Scholarships
Applying for a scholarship to study in the USA requires careful planning and attention to detail. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:
1. Start Early
Begin researching scholarships at least a year before you plan to study. This will give you enough time to understand the eligibility criteria, gather necessary documents, and meet application deadlines. An overseas education consultancy can help you stay organized and ensure that you don’t miss out on any opportunities.
2. Build a Strong Academic Profile
Many scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence, so maintaining a strong GPA and performing well on standardized tests is crucial. Beyond academics, participating in extracurricular activities, internships, or research projects can strengthen your application.
3. Write a Compelling Statement of Purpose (SOP)
A well-crafted SOP is an essential part of your scholarship application. It should highlight your academic achievements, career goals, and why you deserve the scholarship. An overseas education consultancy can help you refine your SOP to make it stand out to selection committees.
4. Gather Letters of Recommendation
Most scholarships require letters of recommendation from teachers, professors, or employers. Choose individuals who know you well and can speak to your academic abilities, character, and potential.
5. Submit Financial Documents (For Need-Based Scholarships)
If you’re applying for a need-based scholarship, you will need to submit financial documents, such as tax returns and bank statements, to demonstrate your financial need. Education consultancies can guide you in organizing these documents and submitting them on time.
6. Apply to Multiple Scholarships
To increase your chances of receiving financial aid, apply to multiple scholarships. You can explore national scholarships, university-specific scholarships, and even scholarships offered by private organizations or foundations.
How an Overseas Education Consultancy Can Help
Navigating the scholarship application process can be complex, especially for first-time applicants. This is where an overseas education consultancy comes in handy. Here’s how they can assist you:
Scholarship Identification: Consultancies can help you identify scholarships that match your academic profile and financial situation.
Application Assistance: From writing a compelling SOP to gathering recommendation letters, a consultancy provides support throughout the application process.
Financial Planning: They offer guidance on managing your finances, estimating the cost of studying abroad, and finding additional funding opportunities.
Visa Support: After securing a scholarship, an education consultancy can help with the student visa application process, ensuring you meet all requirements.
Conclusion
Securing a scholarship to study in the USA can significantly reduce the financial burden of pursuing higher education abroad. By understanding the various scholarship options, starting your applications early, and seeking guidance from an overseas education consultancy, you can increase your chances of success. With determination and proper planning, your dream of studying in the USA can become a reality, backed by the financial support you need to thrive.
