Illustration for the story “Die Pflanzen des Dr. Cinderella” (The plants of Dr. Cinderella) in the book “Wachsfigurenkabinett” (Waxworks) by Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932), Munich 1908.

This illustration alone can tell you that it’s an interesting book. It’s a wild mix of short stories that range from comedic horror, real horror down to satiers. There is no theme, but many stories show a distinct hatred for the military. 

While I like Meyrink’s true horror (best in his book “Fledermäuse” (Bats)), here, the comedic horror stories are the best part. Meyrink takes great care to build up a brooding and creepy atmosphere just to tear it all down with a single punch line.

--Warning, Spoilers! For a 112 year old story --

The story “Der Saturnring” (Saturn’s Ring) is especially interesting. It’s about a group of dark cultists, scientists of the occult, trying to summon power from the stars. When a trapped human soul escapes and forms a new ring around Saturn, their master tries to force it back by the “invocation of Typhon”. This results in the walls turning into rotting flesh and idiotic, mindless things from beyond breaking into the room. The master sacrifices himself, but the world is saved. 

In the aftermath protagoinst starts to research what kind of powerful human soul could form a new ring around Saturn and almost destoryed the fabric of reality. He comes to the conclusion that only one type of human can do this: A pastor’s wife. Only they, those protestantic, philistine, moralist bigots with their air of suffocation and aggressive boredom could have such evil souls. And the new ring around saturn was crocheted.

Honestly, this reads like a parody of H.P. Lovecraft and his cosmic horror - long before, as it is often claimed, Lovecraft established cosmic horror. And long, long before his literature had an impact in Germany.

I think this shows that the tropes of cosmic horror were not only established longe before Lovecraft, they were so common that it made sense to write parodies of them. This would be an interesting topic of research and I would really like to know what literature scholars have to say about this.
