Swans Rattle a Sold-Out Music Hall of Williamsburg on Sunday
Swans – Music Hall – October 1, 2023
The walls of Music Hall of Williamsburg were shaking on Sunday night. As was the floor and the ceiling and the body parts of everyone at the band’s third straight sold-out show at the venue. An opening set from guitarist Norman Westberg established the evening’s energy, solo guitar and effects that seemed to buzz and resonate into every nook of the club’s foundation, eventually finding sweet melodies and enchanting echoes.
A little after 9 p.m., Swans took the stage for their third of three packed shows. Crowded on a stage bathed in a deep red for the night, Michael Gira led the ensemble with the strums of an acoustic guitar. The simplicity of the opening chords soon yielded to complex layering, first Gira’s chanting lyrics, then a shower of cymbal rattling, shrieks of electric guitars, lap steel moans, and hair-raising bass and drum drones. It was a growing intensity that was mirrored by an almost pronounced gentleness running counter in the empty spaces left by the growing wall of sound, the drums reaching a tribal pitch as the whole room trembled in response, rattling parts of my body I’m not sure are supposed to be rattled. This was “The Beggar,” the title track of the newest release from the veteran noise-rockers, a thick sauna of sound, nearly unbearable and yet cleansing.
When I looked at the time again, it was 10 p.m. and I’m not sure how many songs had been played or if I had passed out from the intensity of the noise, but it did feel good. The rest of the night was a taffy-pull of seven or eight more songs, many, like “The Memorious” and “Ebbing,” were off the new record, dark poetry and wild-eyed, room-shaking music. The latter was a personal highlight, a spellbinding intro, Gira’s chanting feeling like a summoning of spirit as he sang, “Gestating — just dreaming / Not breathing” making way to lovely melodic bits even as the chaotic energy grew. In the end, the show was a two-hour-plus endurance test, similar peaks and troughs of dark and light, a massive sound that, despite all the vibration, had no cracks in its foundation. —A. We did this for fun, to try something new, to try a new fandom, to get back into writing, to challenge ourselves, to keep it short and simple, to get an idea that wouldn't leave us alone out of our heads, and I love this for all of us.
A huge round of applause to everyone who participated this year as a writer, reader, or general-hanger-on.

Viggo Mortensen'in performansı ve filmdeki çocuk oyuncuların başarılı performansları övgü almıştır. "Captain Fantastic," aile, toplum ve bireyin özgürlüğü gibi konuları derinlemesine işleyerek düşündürücü bir hikaye sunmaktadır.

164. The Warning by K.A. Applegate--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was a pretty interesting addition to the series because it introduced even more possibilities and new concepts into the universe. I'm always amazed by this series when Applegate introduces new stuff because it's such a long series.
THE WARNING was also from the perspective of the leader of the group. His books always remind me just how young these kids are and how much pressure is on the leader. Even one of the characters at one point comments on how hard it must be to be the leader and make the choices he has to make. He also makes a pretty interesting statement about how a leader doesn't have the option of falling into their fear because they have to guide the people who follow them. It was quite a mature and somewhat depressing concept to hear from such a young person.
This series continues to surprise.

165. The Girl in the Locked Room by Mary Downing Hahn--⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of the things I love about MGLit horror is that the stories aren't usually scary just for the sake of it, but there is usually a really heartfelt or heartbreaking reason behind the horror. THE GIRL IN THE LOCKED ROOM was surprisingly heartbreaking.
Though the central story of the MC's family and their constant moving was a bit on the weaker side, I really enjoyed the ghost story itself. The history behind why the ghost of the little girl is haunting the locked room broke my heart.
I liked the friend that the MC made because she added so much personality to the story, but I also found it weird that her parents let her sleepover two nights in a row at a relative strangers house LOL. That was probably the most unrealistic part to me.
Anyway, this had the right amount of heart for a creepy story and a pretty sweet ending. I recommend it to any young reader looking for a good ghost story!

166. Fight or Flight by Samantha Young--⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'm torn on FIGHT OR FLIGHT.
When I first mentioned on social media that I was reading this, I got a few messages about mixed opinions or how much they disliked this book. I can see both perspectives because this was definitely a journey.
On one hand, I loved the spice and the sexual tension. I thought that was really well done. The storyline in general, too, was great. This MC has a badass job and a great sense of self, even though the men in her life and her parents have really knocked her down.
On the other hand, the love interest was a massive dick. I get that he had his own trauma and his own reasons for being a defensive jackass, but I found it ridiculously ironic that he accused the MC of judging a book by its character when he is doing the exact thing to her. In fact, I hated that the MC was essentially forced to prove who she was for the entirety of the book--not just with him, but with his brother, too.
But while the love interest was a massive dickhole, I enjoyed the rest of the book. The best friend was a great character and her heartbreaking side story touched my heart--even though it was somehow used as a way to showcase the MC's humanity to the love interest's random brother.
Anyway, I can say I understand the mixed reviews. This story is full of sexual tension, amazing spicy moments, but the attitudes need to be checked at the door. The chapters in which they first meet had me wanting to punch someone (hint: it wasn't the MC).

167. A Wizard Abroad by Diane Duane--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I mentioned in a previous review that this series sometimes flies right over my head because of all the technical and science jargon. A WIZARD ABROAD is the first book in the series that didn't throw me for a loop. I enjoyed this one a lot and think it's my favourite so far.
I loved the new setting and the new cast of characters that challenged the MC. I was a little surprised by one of the situations, but that can also be a refreshing take on what could have easily become something cliche.
I also love the concept that the wizardry can be done differently based on the culture, place, and people. Will hopefully the next books in the series sometime in the near-future!

168. If Tomorrow Doesn't Come by Jen St. Jude--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I kind of have a weak spot for books like this one--the ones that explore the what-if's of a world on the brink of destruction. What would the characters do? What would be revealed? What truths would finally come to light?
The MC in this sapphic book is depressed to the point where they were about to self-harm themselves, but they were (ironically) saved by the upcoming end of the world. This forces them to face the reality and importance of staying alive, even if it's just for a few more days. In doing so, they confront not just their broken friendship with their childhood crush, but also the extremely complicated relationship with her parents and lookalike ghost of her aunt.
We also catch glimpses of how she got to the point where she was at at the beginning of the book through flashback chapters. We get to see how each event affected her and how each moment slowly chipped at her mental health.
IF TOMORROW DOESN'T COME also forces the reader to understand that sometimes even the most planned situations don't always go the way we hope. Life can change rapidly and the true test can be how someone comes out on the other side.
___
169. Morning Glory Milking Farm by C.M. Nascosta--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hear me out: MORNING GLORY MILKING FARM is actually incredibly heartwarming.
The MC is very horny, that can't be ignored, but the relationship between the two characters was actually really sweet. I loved that it was a slow burn and that there were actually considerations made for any potential consequences.
I also loved the consent and the way these two worked together. AND especially how she didn't lose herself in him. Although, this book has now made me want to read more books like this because I am curious to see if maybe some of these stories have great stories hidden behind some of these...intense covers.
I WILL say, however, I have the self-published edition and not the newer edition with the prettier cover. The editing in that is atrocious. I don't know if it's fixed in the new edition, but in mine it was glaring. I think it would heavily benefit from a few good rounds of editing. The story itself is great, but some line editing would bring it up to a wholly new level.

170. Here We Go Again by Alison Cochrun--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If you read YOU, WITH A VIEW and loved it, this is the next read for you!
Alison Cochrun does it again with another amazing Queer romance. HERE WE GO AGAIN is an amazing and heartfelt sapphic road trip story that follows two childhood best friends turned enemies and might become something more as they take a detour-filled road trip across the US with their dying childhood teacher-turned mentor/father figure/friend.
I'm not going to lie, this book was sometimes hard to read because of the impending death of their companion. The core of their road-trip being an opportunity to experience things before the end shows how fleeting life can be. The choices one makes and the regrets they have near the end shouldn't be enough to stop you from finding those moments yet again before you go.
I found that the two women had some good character growth and great moments of understanding, except for one instance, but communication is always KEY.
HERE WE GO AGAIN had so much to offer and it delivered. I cried, I laughed, I swooned (Because, excuse me, the tension and passion between them during that first kiss? Please), and I wanted nothing but the best for them.
Please read this and cry with me.
___
171. The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
THE SERPENT KING was one of those books that took me a while to get into but once it had its claws in me, I couldn't stop reading it. It also absolutely destroyed my heart.
I found it interesting how Zentner explored religion and the indoctrination of religion--even to the point where someone's religious beliefs are more important than the well-being of their children. It broke my heart every time one of the MC's was forced to live with the consequences of his father's actions and then be blamed for their situation. Every time his mother said "we are a family and you have to help us with this debt, don't be selfish" it just brought back so many memories of the reddit stories I've read. Some of these teenagers have so much self-control. The audacity of these horrible and narcissistic parents.
The second MC was a boy who literally escaped into a fantastical world because his life was abusive and somewhat hopeless. His story made me wish I could give him the biggest hug, this poor and misunderstood gentle giant. His relationship with his mom was the sweetest and I'm glad he had that refuge.
The final MC was someone that vaguely frustrated me. I understood some of the things she did, but she had A LOT of character growth to experience. She had a strange set of rose-coloured glasses on for a good chunk of the book. Her inability to see where the other two characters were coming from when she started to push one of them beyond their comfort zone was really frustrating. I do understand, however, that she was essentially written like a manic pixie dream girl, which is a whole other thing. Her dad was awesome though.
This book had a lot of levels and it broke my heart a few times. I kind of saw of the things coming, but they didn't hurt any less when they happened.

i’ve been in a reading slump as of late but a couple books that i can think of off the top of my head that have left an impact are
the secret history (my fav of all time it’s heavily annotated cause i’m a nerd💀)
crime and punishment (a doozy but worth it)
jane eyre (best book to start w to get into classics imo)
a little life (read it in three days cause i needed to finish it and get rid of it -10/10 i bc old write a whole rant ab this damn book it has some really good parts/quotes but not enough to make it worth it)
on earth were briefly gorgeous (ocean vuong is a poet so this novel read like poetry but in the best way)
OOOO I've read Crime and Punishment, and Jane Eyre! Excellent choice in classics!
I have A Little Life on my TBR and a physical copy in my very large pile already! People seem to either love it or hate it, I'm curious as to where I will fall on that spectrum lol. I'll have to check out The Secret History and On Earth Were Briefly Gorgeous! I will admit I sometimes have a love hate relationship with the New England based dark academia books seeing as how I em grew up in that lol I'm also the worst, I have so many annotation tabs but never end up using them and then get annoyed when I try and go back and reread parts.
So far this year I've read:
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Stars In Your Eyes by Kacen Callender ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️
Sanctuary of the Shadow by Aurora Ascher ⭐️
Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Rhythm, Chord & Malykhin by Mariana Zapata ⭐️⭐️
The Idea of You by Robinne Lee ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Even If It Breaks Your Heart by Erin Hahn ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Strung Along by Hannah Cowan ⭐️⭐️⭐️
A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much for indulging me in this book chatter! Books are truly like the best thing ever. I love fanfic SO MUCH obviously, but there is also something so special about like holding a physical book in your hands! I hope you are having a wonderful Monday and a great rest of your week!
one of my booktubers has been reading books from every year since she was born so i decided to look up what i might read if i did that and 1986 was kind of stacked?? (because of the cocaine, i assume)
to say a stephen king novel was published in a given year is like, name any year since 1974 apart from 2020. most years he was publishing more than one. so it’s not that impressive, and this year he “only” published one, but it was it, which has surely got to be top five most iconic
not much different for diana wynne jones whom i miss every day but this was the year that gave us howl’s moving castle, which thanks to miyazaki is definitively her best-known and most popular work.
the first volume of watchmen was published this year
as was all of frank miller’s the dark knight returns
the first baby-sitters club books
AND the first sweet valley twins books
AND the first american girl books, with three each for samantha, molly, and my favorite kirsten
AND the first magic school bus book which unlike the others was not a series i read but still, the launching of another iconic childhood book series
the first volume of maus (published only chapter by chapter in a magazine to that point)
the first redwall
the third book of tammy pierce’s first series song of the lioness
the second ever discworld
(second books/volumes both for ender’s game and dragon ball but those feel less impressive—i guess the anime for the latter also started this year?)
the hellbound heart (aka hellraiser)
burning chrome by william gibson (the collection)
more inspirations for films: forrest gump (yeah that was a book, no you shouldn’t read it), and fincher’s zodiac
probably of interest mainly to me but wait till helen comes by mary downing hahn, this is probably her best-known work
and of course tons of 80s staples who like king were putting out one or more books every year at the time but none of them particularly stuck out to me as being noteworthy, but they were there
For my final pieces I had merge two illustrator’s styles to illustrate a catwalk look that I chose from a collection from Milan Fashion Week.
For this piece I chose to merge the style of Samantha Hahn and Federica S. I also chose a look from Versace’s Spring-Summer collection.
To illustrate this piece I used the style of how Federica illustrates people. For the media application I chose to use the way Samantha Hahn uses watercolour paints, I chose this way to illustrate my catwalk look as I liked the style of how Federica’s figure is illustrated however I didn’t like the way there was a lack of colour on her illustrations. For that reason that is why I chose to use Samantha’s media application to brighten up my illustration.
The collection that the look I illustrated is from was inspired by Versace’s Fall-Winter 1995 collection. ‘Queen’ of the house, Donatella Versace, cast a chessboard of her own, employing models as pawns, rooks and knights to move about as she feels fit across the checkerboard runway.
For my Milan fashion week illustration I chose a look from the Moschino collection. I took inspiration from both Samantha Hahn and Anne Sofia Madsen’s illustration work. Once I had sketched out the outline I decided to attempt to stain the paper with tea bags. I did this because most of Anne’s work is done on tan coloured paper and also the Moschino collection was based around the history of the brand so I thought it would create a more vintage look. I also took the idea of having the head floating and detached from the rest of the body from Anne’s illustrations. I think this is really effective as it effortlessly adds more interest to the piece. I incorporated Samantha’s style by using water colours for the garment. I also used some white gel pen to make it more similar to her work. The only thing I would change about this illustration is that I would draw the face with pastels instead of coloured pencils as I think it would’ve worked better for the style I was trying to achieve.
Brad and Mike talked about having a fourteen-year-old on their label. They had to take a chance on her. They played her audition video for their band to get their opinions. What was her name? Bria Pitt. She was the daughter of Brad Pitt. His adopted daughter. How old was she? She was fourteen. That was the issue they were having. They agreed she had talent. They just didn’t know if they wanted to sign someone so young.
They would have to work around the law because she could only be in the studio at certain hours of the day. Maybe they could wait a couple of years but invite her to hang out with them, so she could get a sense of the recording process. They thought that would work. Brad emailed him back about their new plan. Would that work for him and Bria? Yeah, it would.
“Hold up. Holy shit! Oh my god!”
“What?
“Brad just replied to my email. He said that would work because his daughter is pregnant and will need some time adjusting to the new baby.”
“Are you serious”, Mike asked.
He read the email out loud word for word. That… they didn’t even know what to think. It had to be a mistake. Fourteen and pregnant? Chester could see it happening. It would most likely mean sexual abuse or assault. He didn’t want to accuse her father, but yeah. It was known to happen. They were still speechless, as they took that in. Fourteen. That was the only thing that they thought of. Fourteen.
The band was currently working on their second album, after the success of their first. They were a group of six guys, who met in high school or college. Chester was the only one who auditioned for the band. He was from Phoenix, Arizona, and had come to Los Angeles with his wife, Samantha. They didn’t have any children together but he had two boys, Jaime and Isaiah from his ex-girlfriend, Elka. Jaime was his biological son while he adopted his brother, Isaiah.
He had been in a couple of bands that didn’t go very far. Linkin Park was the first band he found success in. He got along well with the other guys: Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Rob Bourdon, Joe Hahn, and Dave ‘Phoenix’ Farrell. They accepted him into their group and he became one of their brothers. He and Mike were best friends because their personalities matched.
Mike was the leader. He looked at problems and found solutions. Whenever something happened, everyone went to him. It was one of the reasons why he had a co-partnership with Brad. When the band argued or disagreed, he listened without taking sides before deciding what to do. Joe was the DJ. He was also a skilled artist and producer. Rob was a quiet sensitive guy, who loved reading books or practicing the drums during his free time.
Dave was the guy with a great attitude. He was a jokester but also the one who was there during hard times. Brad was the business side of the band. They were six guys with six different personalities. Somehow they managed to work together. They fought their record label for creative freedom. It was an uphill struggle but it made them closer as a band and as brothers.
Bria showed up with her father during a break in filming. They had finished filming in Las Vegas and were in Los Angeles for a while before flying to another location. They introduced themselves. She didn’t look pregnant, though she was also wearing a zip-up hoodie that covered her stomach. Her long brown hair was pulled back in a ponytail. Brad asked if she had a song she wanted to sing for them. Yes. I Just Can’t Wait to Be King from The Lion King.
She was adorable as she sang! They wanted to put her into a box and keep her forever! When she was done, they clapped for her. Was The Lion King her favorite movie? Yeah! She watched it a million times. They laughed. He then told her their offer of hanging out with them for two years to learn the business. Then, they could talk about giving her a contract. Was she okay with that? Yeah! They laughed.
“I don’t know if my dad told you about my baby.”
“He did. That was why we don’t want to sign you yet. We want you to have that time with your baby first.”
“Ok. Thank you!”
She was welcome! Could they ask about her baby? Ok. Did she know what she was having? No, not yet but she thought she was having a girl. She even picked out a name. What was it? Stephanie Margaret Pitt. For a boy, she chose Thomas Bradley Pitt. Those were great names! Where did she get Margaret and Thomas from? They were her birth parents. They died when she was born.
Brad didn’t have any concerns about his daughter’s safety. He could sense the band would keep her safe. Mike asked what he thought. He was all for letting her hang out with them during the day or however long they agreed on. She spent a lot of time with him, so he wanted her to meet other people. He joked about them keeping up with her energy levels. How bad was it? It was a two-year-old toddler on caffeine. Oh, yeah. They could handle that. They laughed.
They could use that energy and put her to work. He laughed. Was Bria her full name? Yeah. Her middle name was Angel. Nobody else had her name. She thought that was so cool. They had never heard her name before. It was unique. She nodded.
After she and Brad left, they talked about how adorable she was! She would fit in well with them. They also hoped she had a smooth labor and delivery. Brad asked her what she thought as they drove to the doctor. She liked it! They were cool guys. He laughed and agreed they were. Was she excited to see her baby?
Yeah! She was going to ask if the doctor could write down the gender on a piece of paper. They would then take that paper to a bakery and ask them to make cupcakes with either blue or pink frosting inside for a gender reveal. George, Matt, and Julia were coming over later for dinner after sleeping in and she wanted them to have a cupcake with them.
After checking in at the desk, they sat down in the waiting room. Before seeing her baby, she was asked questions about her pregnancy and how she was feeling. She had a lot more energy and didn’t feel sick anymore. Good! That meant she didn’t have morning sickness anymore. She did still take a nap in the afternoon because she still got tired easily. The doctor told her that napping was a great way to refuel. It was also a great way of making sure her baby was healthy.
They were able to see her baby moving around. He or she moved their arm in front of their face before opening their mouth like they were yawning. Their eyes were closed. They looked very healthy and were developing the way they were supposed to.
The three of them counted ten fingers and ten toes. Did she want to know the gender? She asked if she could write it on a piece of paper for a gender reveal. They were going to have cupcakes with pink or blue frosting inside. Yeah! That was a great idea! She wrote down the gender before folding the paper up and handing it to Brad. Thank you.
