During the preshow I posited that "Spearwhil” would be the Rasmussen but as it turned out-
I HEAR YOU CALLING ME AT NIGHT
No, Tom NOT NOW!!! I’m in the middle of my sentence. 🙄 Wait your turn
Anyway, it turned out that ‘the Rasmussen’ really ought to be called ‘the KEiiNO’. Observe this Michal-esque rise up the scoreboard:
OutSzpak’ing Spzak. 😍 Let’s be honest though, it was-
I HEAR YOU CALLING ME AT NI-
- COMPLETELY DESERVED TOO. Fred was especially great, who delivered EPIC yoik solo that I am sure won KEiiNO the televote on the spot. 😍
This particularly pleases me because I was worried Tom & Alexandra (who are both very good performers) would take the spotlight away from Fred, but no did the weakest link pre-show turned not only turn out to be the strongest one, but he was arguable the single strongest performer of finale night. SO PROUD OF THEM ANGELS. 😍 Let us all sing along
*cough* I said, “let us all sing along”
...
(k Tom, now is ur cue)
I HEAR YOU CALLING ME AT NIIIIIGHT
THE NORTHERN LIGHTS ARE DANCING
HÅ LA HEI LOI LÅ
A lot of the criticism from KEiiNO comes from your typical value-seekers who can only enjoy themselves in public if their shallow trash comes coated in a thick layer of novelty gimmicks and Deep Meaning, so they don’t have to admit to others and themselves than they tune in to have fun, like everyone else. There’s nothing wrong with novelty gimmicks & the like, but applying that standard to everything is taking it a tad too far. Sometimes, simplicity is key and that’s exactly what KEiiNO were: unpretentious, highly-addictive EDM adorned with epic yoiking. 😍
"Tomorrow” is, to use Gianluca’s own words, a curious delight: I always, always, always forget about it. Then I rewatch 2013 as I do at least once per year, and each time it’s like a Céline Dion song IT’S ALL COMING BACK TO ME and I’m in love again. 😍 “Tomorrow” is such a clever twist of the typical love song by telling the story from the THIRD PERSON PERSPECTIVE by an all-knowing narrator. It’s world’s merriest audiobook. 😍
Naturally, this works because Gianluca has TONS of charisma. He’s one of the most magnetic humans ever on a Eurovision Stage?
It’s hard to believe that he ages like the rest of us, I’d assume he was birthed fully formed and clothed, at age thirteen, in whatever rests at the end of a Neverlandian rainbow.
“Tomorrow” could’ve so easily been one of those “Annoyingly Positive songs”, but because he’s so relentlessly jolly, Gianluca injects “Tomorrow” with limitless happy energy, enough to melt the polar icecaps. I am happy that I don’t revisit Gianluca between watches, as I do with others, because each time I rediscover him it’s like finding a four-leaf-clover. 🍀
IMA LI MLADI? IMA LI LYUDI?
TSYALO SELO DOIDE
PEITE NE SE BOITE
Let us continue with one of the most glorious trainwrecks EVER in Eurovision. 😍 Of course, this being the GOD-tier the severity of wreckage (aka the Sennek Factor) is even higher than normal. In the case of “Samo shampioni” the messiness began DURING THE PRESELECTIONS. 😍 Okay you may not remember or know this backstory, so allow me to enlighten you:
Okay, so *initially* BNT selected Elitsa & Stoyan and for some reason decided to hold an NF: They introduced: first a terrible rapbomination, second a boring ethnoballad (think Iriao + percussion) and then pulled out an experimental fusion of ethnic bagpipes, polyphonic singing and dubstep, which Elitsa openly pointed as her favourite. 😍 Obviously, the audience had to choose for the latter? NOPE The audience chose the iriao-esque ballad 😍 and in one of the most hilariously open displays of riggage, LESS THAN A DAY AFTER THE NF (and after Elitsa allegedly threw a huge backstage temper tantrum threatening to withdraw LMFAO), BNT produced a statement that was all like “well. we can’t send “Kismet”. 🤓 You see... it has come under our attention that... the songwriter from Argentina (lmao) can’t agree to the copyright terms we demanded of him 🤓but that’s fine because it means we can send “SAMO SHAMPIONI” instead 😊‘ <3333333333333333333333456789 who the fuck is Christer Björkman, fucking NOBODY that’s who.
And of course, once “Samo Shampioni” finally got to Malmö it was an utter disaster. 😍 I say "disaster” in the best meaning of the word though. I LOVE when countries showcase their musical traditions, but Elitsa and Stoyan do it so aggressively, BLASTING the unassuming viewer with loud af bagpipe noises, following it up with a menuet of polyphony, a clarion of “AAAAAAAAAAAA-YUUUU” and a finale of dubstep and mayumaniacal percussion. “Samo Sampioni” was loud, abrasive, a clamour of ethnic noise but by the same token such a catchy, infectuous, delightful fucking BOP. No surprise it got jurypwned but it was well worth the effort. 😍
Welcome to the Dicedrome, ladies and gentlemen: Introducing the man who put Israel back on the map after four straight NQs. But Nadav is more than just a Hebrew Tom Dice.
For starters, “Golden boy” is also the first time we were ever subjected to Doron Medalie (and also Imri Ziv but lol Imri), who is at his BEST here (apart from that moment when he brusquely shoved Cesár out of the way as if he were Krisse Salminen lmfao 😍): “Golden boy” has everything I could want in an uptempo party song: Drama, catchy rhythm, limitless fun, chanting, dancing and an absolutely ridiculous premise: sixteen year old boy gets wasted after fruitlessly flirting with all sorts of femfolk on his first night out. Yes, THIS
is sixteen years old. 😍 But what I mostly love about “Golden boy” is the humour. Intentional humour is really hard to get right and “Golden boy” NAILS it for me. From self-deprecating one-liners, to that choreography to b-roll material like the sound effect of beer being pourn as Nadav gets further into the song, to of course the epic finale of “THREE MINUTES! BYE :selfie”. 😍
A wild ride which, as serendipity demands, is topped off by Nadav kicking off a strong Israeli streak that indeed ENDS up with Israel winning the contest (with a worse Doron composition :-/) and him showing us around in Tel Aviv. Funny how life works sometimes, huh?
Did you know “Matador” is Eurospeak for “SLAYER”? 😉
Speaking of EPIC party songs, I was looking “Allez Ola Olé” up for my usual ranking purposes and this song.. is one of the most successful Eurovision songs EVER? I am not surprised, because “Allez olla olé” OWNS, but at the same time random 12th placers becoming massive off-season hits <3
(yes I am aware it’s because it was the French “Waka Waka” but that’s even more hilar, actually. What on earth is it doing in Eurovision <3)
Anyway, “Allez ola olé” definitely DESERVES all praise it can get. ETERNAL THORN IN THE SIDE OF THE EUROVISION ELITISTS <3 it is of course the anti-Proud, being all rhythm and no story, literally having no purpose other than making people dance (which I LOVE doing to “Allez Ola Olé”... within the confines of my bedroom, with the curtains closed because I have the dancing skills of drunk JarJar Binks) and honestly, what a spectacle. 😍
It features, in order of ascending awesomeness, male twerking (gender equality <3)
witty references to sex (which I don’t mind here because it’s clearly consentual, and therefore, healthy, ICKOLAS)
“Je sens le truc monter/..😏 ALLEEEEZ 😱”.
DAM BA DAM BA DAM BA DAM DAM
A fucking HAKA????? (btw, the female backing doing a salute is also lowkey great <3)
Actually, TWO HAKA’S????
This song may not have relevant meaning but my weave flew all the way to French Polynesia. “Allez, ola, olé” is nothing less than fucking AWESOME.
In this update, we pay our final respects to Norway, Malta and France: Read more about them below:
NORWAY
I don’t feel like this chart reflects my true feelings on Norway, because I like them a LOT more than what their average implies. They’re largely just dragged down by a few bad entries in the first half of the decade. Norway in the second half of this decade has shown a lot of promise and they are on my list of countries that I expect to win in the upcoming decade.
MALTA
Malta are a very average Eurovision country imo. As you can see, they very often select songs that are not worth giving a fuck about, but conversely the few times that they do, they’re usually excellent happy-go-lucky gems. I could see them winning if they find that rare 1-in-50 entry (by one of their jesc winners preferably), but only if they keep internally selecting their entrant because lmao MES(s)C <3
FRANCE
This is a really good chart for France and roughly what I expected. Not my favourite country but solidly upper tier. France really have reinvented themselves post 2016 and are reaping the rewards with generally higher results. I hope it gets topped off with another win soon. They deserve it.
unfortunately I've already had the likewise-slavic samo shampioni in my regular music rotation for years so now when I try to sing the little lyrical grasps of the ukrainian one I've managed to hold they inevitably segue to vsichkite yunatzi, te sa nai-dobrite, smeli v igrite, silni vyv dushite
Earlier this week, we released a survey to get a feel as to how you all would think how the contest could turn out, and with the results coming tomorrow, its time we reveal what you predicted! Let’s start!
Part One: Jury Vote
The most predicted song to finish Top 10 in the jury votes is Norway with 14/18 or 77.8% of the vote, closely followed by France and Israel with 12/18 or 66.7% of the votes. Right behind is Italy and England with 11/18 or 61.1% of the votes.
Also mentioned is Thailand (4), Japan (8), United States (9), Netherlands (8), Germany (5), Turkey (3), Czechia (9), Argentina (1), Malaysia (4), New Zealand (5), Iceland (1), Russia (9), Ireland (8), Wales (4), Kyrgyzstan (7), South Korea (9), Laos (5) and Canada (5).
Most predicted songs to win the jury votes are Norway and France with 3 or 16.7% of the votes, followed closely by Kyrgyzstan, Italy and United States with 2 or 11.1% of the votes. Also mentioned are Netherlands, Czechia, Turkey, Russia, Argentina and Canada.
Part 2: The Public Vote
Well it seems you’re more certain about the televote than the jury. Most predicted songs to place Top 10 in the televote were Czechia with 16/18 or 88.9% of the votes, Israel in 2nd with 12/18 or 66.7% of the vote, Italy in 3rd with 11/18 with 61.1% of the vote, followed by Norway and Malaysia with 10/18 or 55.6% of the vote.
Most predicted to win the televote is, pretends to be shocked, Czechia with an overwhelming 47.1%, followed not so closely by Wales and Thailand with 11.8%. Also mentioned are France, Ireland and Japan.
Part Three: The Whole Damn Thing
Most predicted to place top 10 overall is Israel with 15/18 or 83.3% of the votes, followed by Czechia and Norway with 13 and 12 votes. South Korea follows close behind with 9 votes and rounding out the top 5 are Netherlands, England, Russia, France and Italy with 8 votes each.
Most predicted to win the entire contest is France with 16.7% of the votes (I can’t win my own contest you clowns). Czechia, Japan, Italy and Kyrgyzstan come in 2nd with 11.1% of the vote each. Also mentioned are Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Israel, Ireland and Argentina.
Most of you believe that the winner ill take it from winning the jury vote.

Howdy fellas. This is just a (more) casual post regarding the points breakdown and some of my thoughts on the songs and how things went for my @tmblrvision national final.
The Breakdown
Here is the link to the spreadsheet where I kept a running tab of the points. As it’s already been said, 20 votes were cast, and the winner changed by the last 6 votes or so. Carakukly actually was solidly in the lead by 20 points or so until several votes came in giving A-WA top points and Carakukly less.
Stephane Legar was the only act to not receive a single 12 points, but he managed to earn 3rd place by earning 5 10 points and being in the top 4 of 13 votes. Sarit Hadad and Offer Nissim earned 6 10 points, the most of any act, but only avoided the bottom 4 10 times, dropping their average.
The most controversial acts were Static and Ben El, and Nathan Goshen. Both earned 4 12 points, the most behind A-WA’s 5, but Nathan Goshen earned 4 1 points, while Static and Ben El earned 5. However, Nathan Goshen was more consistently middling with the votes, while Static and Ben El often were either in the top 3 or 2 or the bottom 3 or 2, ending up in their tie.
Elai Botner and Aviv Alush were the only act to not make it to the 100 point mark, mainly due to the fact that they were in the bottom 4 of a whopping 15 votes. IMRI, who finished 7th, was in a similar position by coming bottom 4 with 10 votes, albeit he started strong.
My Thoughts
Here is my personal ranking and opinions:
12: Static and Ben El - Gumigam: I have been obsessed with this song since I first heard it driving around Tel Aviv in an Uber. I listen to it all the time, I force Molly to listen to it all the time when we’re driving, I’m out here like גומיגם שוקובו מה קרה. It just slaps, y’all. I’m kinda disappointed it didn’t do very well, but it’s definitely one of those “you either love it or hate it on the first listen” kind of songs. I was like “wtf is this” when I first heard it, but fortunately I decided to shazam it and now here I am, a Static and Ben El clown.
10: Stephane Legar - Comme ci Comme ça: I was so shocked when I first heard this, I thought he was French. I found this on a top Israeli songs of 2018 (that aren’t Netta’s or Omer Adam’s) article and I looked him up. Yep, he’s born and raised Israeli to Togolese parents, which explains why he speaks French fluently. That aside, the song is incredibly catchy and fun, and I’m glad it made it to 3rd.
8: A-WA - Mudbira: A deserved winner. I was worried this wasn’t going to do well for the reasons people give for not liking Pali się or Samo Shampioni, and it was controversial to an extent. However, it goes to show that I know nothing about what folks like or will vote for. Fun fact: I was originally torn between Mudbira and Hana Mash Hu al Yaman, but ended up going for Mudbira because I thought more people would like it.
6: Carakukly - Catching (Oy Oy Oy): I first heard this sitting in an Uber on the way back from one of the semis while we were in Tel Aviv. It was the first song I shazamed while I was there specifically to build this national final, and it’s a good thing I did. It’s very catchy, modern, and enjoyable; it’s no wonder it was winning for a good minute there.
4: Elai Botner and Aviv Alush - The closest to you: I quite like this song; it’s a fun sort of summer beach time-road trip rock. I found it on the same article that I found Comme ci Comme ça. I’m kinda sad it came last, but not surprised, and something has to come last (I’m just glad it wasn’t Gumigam lol).
3: IMRI - Imrico: I’m glad IMRI’s back out there making music, and Imrico is a fun lil tune if I do say so myself. It’s nice, but I don’t feel strongly enough about it to put it any higher, unfortunately.
2: Sarit Hadad x Offer Nissim - SHUFUNI: It’s pretty good and it has a cool kinda sound to it, but my issue with Imrico also applies here: I don’t like it more than the other songs to put it above them. I can see why others like it though.
1: Nathan Goshen - I miss you: Like I said about The closest to you, something has to come last. I miss you isn’t bad or boring by any means, but I personally find it the least interesting of the 8 songs. I was surprised to see how many 12 points it received, but again, what do I know about what people will go for?
Extra Credits
Before signups, I had 11 songs in my Israeli national final playlist, but I thought 11 was too many since I prefer less to more. Rather than cut songs myself, I asked three individuals, who will remain anonymous (unless they would like to make their involvement public), to sift through my playlist and pick 3 songs to delete and then explain why those 3. After considering their inputs, I ended up cutting these 3 songs:
Dennis Lloyd - GFY
youtube
Amir ve Ben - Loop
youtube
and... Netta - Nana Banana
youtube
Why?
GFY: 2 of the 3 recommended cutting it because they believed it would be unpopular with the audience or that it didn’t really work for them. 1 of them straight up hated it.
Loop: 2 of the 3 recommended cutting it simply because it was boring.
Nana Banana: 2 of the 3 recommended cutting it because they were concerned that it would take the national final by storm and blow everything out of the water because it’s Netta and then flop in the contest, because it’s Netta, she won last year, you have 2 former ESC artists why aren’t you more creative in choosing artists, etc. This was different from the first 2 because, rather than it would be unlikable, it would be controversial and would ultimately work against itself.
I ended up agreeing to cut these songs because 1) 2 of 3 people agreed that each song in question should be cut, which I found compelling, 2) I thought their reasons were sound, and 3) I was more willing to cut these songs than any of the 8 I have now.
Songs that were recommended to be cut, but ultimately stayed:
Elai Botner and Aviv Alush - The closest to you
IMRI - Imrico
A-WA - Mudbira (lol)
Do you think it was a good call to cut these songs? Would you have preferred they stayed in? Would you have cut any songs at all, replaced some or all of the cut songs with 1, 2, or 3 of the songs that stayed in, or cut more songs in general?
That’s all I have for now, if you want to DM me on Discord to talk more about this, feel free.
Top 5 fave acts from each country because idk what to do with my life now that esc is over. :') (2010 to 2021)
Bulgaria
5. Kristian Kostov - Beautiful mess (2017)
Woah, true art. Sounds melancholic and so lovely, so impressed that he got Bulgaria's best result eVER. Makes me cry a little :')
4. Sofi Marinova - Love unlimited (2012)
Multilingual fun party song yeeee. Makes me dance in my seat everytime I listen to this. It was a big fuckin tragedy that she got the same amount of points as Norway in the semi but gUESS WHAT she didn't qualify because yes. Hope she does a Poli Genova and returns for Bulgaria, preferably next year with an enthnic pop song like this one. 👀
3. Victoria - Tears getting sober (2020)
Another bulgarian entry that makes me cry :') I feel like I'm in a fairytale when listening to this, it's so dreamy and mesmerising, and very calming too. That mumbling choir also sounds wonderful. This whole song is such a blessing, I really love Victoria's style overall (guigo, alright and ugly cry are some of my faves from her)
2. Equinox - Bones (2018)
Their voices go so well together, and let's not mention that the song is really fuckin rad. Especially the girl's voice towards the end. I love this entry beyond the bones.
Other faves that didn't fit in the top 5: Growing up is getting old (love the message and the clock sound at the beginning), Na inat (love her energy), Samo shampioni (c h a o t i c lowkey wish bulgaria would send crazy entries like this again)
1. Poli Genova - If love was a crime (2016)
Cheers me up, happy & feel-good, and just look at her glowup since 2011! She's a true queen 💖 Bulgaria really came back better than ever in 2016 after a long break, and honestly it's amazing.
65. Michael Schulte - “You let me walk alone”
Germany 2018
youtube
[2018 Review Here] (shared with Eugent)
When Germany revealed this homely carrot top as their entrant I of course IMMEDIATELY rolled my eyes at it. Discount Ed Sheeran, GTFO!! Idk what the general lowdown on Ed Sheeran is, but good lord that man is responsible for some really BORING and GENERIC music (I will never get the obsession with “Perfect”, ever.) and as you can expect that also bled into my initial opinon of Michael.
However, two things. A of all, “You let me walk alone” is a much better song because it is actually VERY catchy, in a good way. ONE love / TWO hearts / THREE kids / LOVING mum is among the more memorable hooks in this decade.
Secondly, Michael’s emotion is *real*. This is a song about his coping with his dead father and well... I am not made from stone. Dude was in GENUINE TEARS during the endgame!! And as someone who deeply loves his father, I can definitely empathize with that message on a personal level.
There are better songs around. There are better performers around. There is better emotional pull left in this ranking. Regardless, Michael was able to stun me into teary-eyed silence and that is a feat which earns nothing less than RESPECT.
FANTASTIC INDIE ANGELS <333 The appreciation I have to Softengine I have is obvious, yes? Highly energetic indie rock song from one of my favourite Eurovision countries. 😍 That also did VERY well because it’s genuinely that good. Take THAT Finland bullies!!! #HeyaSuomi
However, Softengine offer even more than just a kickass rock song. They offer some of my favourite song lyrics ever? They are both puzzlingly weird and endearingly ESL
Even Human Bound
People Rolling Dice
Such A Novel Life She Thought
While Knowing Nothing At All~
What on earth is Topi singing about? 😍 Well actually, it’s the story of an old man looking back at the life he’s had and.. It actually has a LOT of emotional pull wtf? Take a look at the bridge:
ALL THESE WORDS
SHE MEANT TO SAY TO ME
ALL THESE WORDS
AGAINST MY FAITH
ALL THESE WORDS
BEFORE SHE PASSED AWAY
ALL THESE WORDS
WILL NEVER NEVER NEVER CHANGE
A wonderful display of juvenile energy that has me coming back craving for me. SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOP 10 but lol it’s Finland when is Finland not getting bullied by people with no taste. 😭
More rock angels. 😍 However, Litesound rank on the other end of the quality spectrum, being great because of their incompetence.
Honestly, I don’t think there’s anything more endearing when the inept give it their all, completely oblivious to their amateurism, a description which -let’s be honest- is “Belarus in Eurovision” is in a nutshell 😍. Well that plus the hilariously rigged NF, remember that ALYONA LANSKAYA originally won Litesound’s NF and then had to bequeath her spot to them when her voting fraud was exposed. 😍 It’s not even the most hilariously rigged NF of the decade though, omg YES we shall discuss that whenever it’s “Samo shampioni’s” turn. 😈
Anyway, Litesound bring the a double whammy of hilarity with some A+ Bad English diction (let us all sing along)
WONEVER STEN INDO AR WEH
WHEEL MEK IT FRU DE DEH
CUZ WE AR DA WEINERS
WE AR DA GEEROS
WIR BRACKING DOWN DA WALLZ
GODDA HIT DE MALL
CUZ WE ARE DA GEEROS
WE ARE DA DRIMURS
and the fact that all Litesound members look like animals, introducing:
The seahorse
The afghan greyhound
the mongoose
and of course Dima who might be the lovechild of Alsou and an ostrich. 😍
All of this may make you believe I merely stan Litesound on an ironic level, but I actually LOVE them on an unironic level too. “We are the heroes” is a fun, futuristic electronic rock rollercoaster and Litesound strike a perfect balance between good song, disarming incompetence and going ALL OUT in proving themselves as high quality, laced with high voltage addictive rock beats. SO, NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY, NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO, I’LL MAKE IT ALL RIGHT! I’M BRACKING DOWN THE WALLS, THEY ARE THE *HEROES*
AGE OF AMINATA <3 what a glorious two-piece act in the herstory of Latvia. To Latvia’s credit they completely reinvented themselves in the Supernova Era, usually resulting in bold entries (and Carousel).
If "Love injected” was the earthquake that shook Latvia AWAKE with her experimental masterpieces, then "Heartbeat” is the aftershock, providing the same avant garde novelty, but not as impactful with a lesser impact.
However, to recycle a phrase i’ve already used multiple times, a lesser Aminata is still fucking awesome. “Heartbeat” packs a massive emotional punch, being more aggressive and volatile than its predecessor, which... works out fine actually. Killer lines such as:
YOU’RE MY DESIRE AND MY PAIN
BUT ALL THE BATTLES ARE IN VAIN
YOU MEAN MORE THAN ANYTHING TO
MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
need an emotionally intense delivery and Justs fucking GOES for it without any inhibitions for his own health and safety
and with every passing second
he gets more into the zone
right until the end, when he LOSES his voice and is reduced to panting an aspirated ”thank you”. 😍 If you’re going to sing about lost love, you’d better do it by also SCREAMING YOUR LUNGS OUT <3
God I’ve been dreading this write-up. Not because of the Hatari stans (lol who is going to complain about getting ranked 61st out of 408), but can I do Hatari justice in print? Hatari weren’t as much as an entry as they were the fiery spirit of mischief, an existential manifestation of defiance, a gestalt of provocative resistance, all contained in the tiny package of two asshole hellraisers.
Yes, assholes. You see, the one thing you NEED to understand before everything else is that Hatari’s poetic palestine shawl moment is one of grade A assholery. Pulling that at the last sec towards their hosts WAS a dick move and Hatari were fully aware of it. We MUST see this as a fact before we discuss anything else that is also Hatari-related.
However, that’s precisely the point? Provocation was the sensation that swept the icelandic nation and its idolization became Hatari’s vocation with dedication and its application in the humiliation and the vexation of the Israeli station in support of the Palestine civilization, leaving KAN in devastation after months of the rabid disorganization was a justification well worth the potential probation. In other words: GET REKT KAN SHIT HOSTS HOPE U GET BLACKLISTED LOLOL #Hatredwon 😈 😈.
ps: still getting the Israelis to cheer for them despite being OPENLY pro-palestine when will ur faves.
~My reasons~ for ranking Hatari lower post-show are less grounded in the politics (again, they were jerks but... that’s also the entire point of sending Hatari lmfao) and more determined by the actual live performance: I thought Klemens was underwhelming and his parts of “Hatrið mun sigra” were also the fave bits. 😭 On the flipside I thought Matthias was excellent (when he didn’t miss his cue) and I legit laugh out loud each time I see his hilarious OTT facial expressions.
What a justified use of guyliner <3 The act was yet again a diabolically brilliant clanging of chains, bashing of mallets, grinding of gears, steaming of punk, a satanic cirque du soleil come to rain justice and brimstone down on our hopeless souls. Hatari were the anti-heroes we needed and don’t deserve.
ps: i hope i will ever find someone who loves me as much as Klemens loves Teresa May.
Iceland’s chart looks much better than I thought it would, but the averages actually put them somewhere in the middle on average. Iceland are always hit-or-miss for me, much moreso in the 2010s than in any other decade and it’s largely down to them failing to pick the best available option because, you know, BadTastitis.
the next update... will be the FINAL one in this shade of green :o
Yes, we are about to move on to the highest, upperest, bestest tier of Eurovision entries. The mind-blowingly amazing entries that are not off this fucking world. Find out who makes the cut and who doesn’t TOMORROW :o
Song Review: “Fire of Love (Pali Się)” by Tulia (Poland)
Slavic folk singing with attitude
youtube
The style of singing Tulia use isn’t new to Eurovision. Similar to this would be Elitsa Todorova of duo Elitsa and Stoyan who represented Bulgaria twice. The opening to 2007 entry “Voda” is an example but a stronger one would be their 2013 entry “Samo Shampioni”. Outside of that, there’s the opening to 90′s show Xena: Warrior Princess
As diverse are the many Slavic groups, so is the “white voice” vocal style. (It probably doesn’t help that I’m using Bulgarian examples for a Polish song.)
While not in full force, 2010 entry “Legenda” had a bit of it with the backing singers:

and there are traces in 2014 entry “My Słowianie - We Are Slavic”

But if Polish or Slavic folk songs aren’t your jam, it’s something that you have to listen get used to listening to. White voice is hardly used in Western popular music let alone in top 40 radio, but this isn’t top 40 radio in my country.
Aside from the singing, there is a mix of Slavic folk with what can be classified as rock music. Tulia has done covers of Depeche Mode and Metallica so it would fit in with their style.
Lyrics are a mix of Polish and English (original version is all in Polish). The arrangement is a bit weird as the English has been randomly added in (even though it’s only in the beginning and at the end of the song). Effect is almost similar to Croatia’s entry (half and half sort of with English and Croatian) in the sense that it’s almost two songs in one, but it also has the same effect as Romania’s entry “De la capăt (All Over Again)”, a version of the song used to connect to an international audience.
Lyrics themselves carry the same weight as the Danish entry with the theme of love lasting forever with the addition of love being this indestructible force. This fire of love burns on that no fire brigade can stop it.
It is burning! It is burning
A fire of love
It is burning inside us! It is burning inside us
Like a dry forest
Love me! Love me!
More and more
It will not help! It will not help!
The fire brigade
Fire! Fire! Fire of love!
Burns in you, burns in me
Burns us alive
Love me now! Love me now!
Harder and harder
Take me there, be the air I need to survive
(for some reason euroivision.tv doesn’t have a translation of the Polish parts at the time of creating this so using the translation linked in the quote itself)
This is a song I’d love to hear in the final as it’s a wonderful mix between traditional and modern. Here’s hoping their vocal styling don’t turn people off.
