Among the Russian tsars, I find Alexander II the most handsome, his father Nicholas I and his grandson Nicholas II. But Alexander II has always been my favorite because of his looks that remind me of a kitten. I would like to ask you, could you please tell me about Alexander II's physical characteristics? He looks very cute even as a child, and we should not be surprised that when he became a grown man, many women, like Queen Victoria, admired him. I can offer you a few quotes on the young Alexander II’s physical appearance from his grandmother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, and from his father, Emperor Nicholas I, but as far as I can tell, most often, people remarked on his good nature rather than on his looks. But yes, he was supposed to have been relatively handsome. That was the general consensus regarding most of the Romanov men.

the thing about reading a lot of literature on a polarizing figure like tsar Alexander is that I kind of start identifying with him in certain ways and it’s annoying as hell. Because an author would be like:

“True to his fickle nature, he did as any man of a weak character would do: waited until the last possible moment to make the decision.”

And I’m like hey shut up! I’m not- I mean he’s not weak just because he needs time to think! This is an important- you know what? Screw you.

Sasha hisses at the sharp pain once his back hits the cold wall. Harshly, brutally. The impact sends his head spinning, white flashes obscure his vision, again and again, making him even more disoriented. And for a moment there, it’s his sire standing on the other side of the room, and not his lover, but just a moment later a bitter thought sneaks itself into his mind– they are not your lover anymore. 

He’s coughing now, choking on his own blood, tasting metal on his tongue and smelling it in the air around him; images of his past cloud his mind, and he is panicked, terrified even, when a strong hand wraps itself around his neck, trapping him in place, but the sharpness and familiarity of the grip sobers him up, violently snapping him back to the present. His sire is long dead, and he knows exactly who is in front of him and why he is here. 

Despite his body screaming at him to allow himself at least a second to gather his footing, Sasha tries to lift his head and open his eyes only to feel the claws dig into his throat even harder, forcing him to shut his eyes again. The pressure on his neck is so strong that he can feel the waves of pain reaching all the way down to his weak legs. He’s trembling, aching, and not at all from fear. 

He should’ve planned this better, he should’ve known how they would react to his presence. Especially after what he’s done, but the guilt has been tearing Sasha from the inside for months now, getting worse and worse after each unanswered text, each declined call. He couldn’t take this madness anymore: the sting of heartbreak keeping him up day after day, the empty space in his bed that they used to share with him mocking him with their absence, their abandoned belongings in his closet, the memories of their eyes on him as they found out about his part in events that gave them nightmares every time they tried to get some rest, their shaking voice as they told him to stay away, the what ifs, the what ifs, the what ifs– 

What if he’d been honest? What if he wasn’t such a coward? What if he could have been enough?

Even if he meets the final death tonight, he needs to set things right. Just this once. 

Sasha finds the courage to look up at them again, and this time they don’t stop him, but he almost wishes they did. Candy’s eyes are wide and full of hatred, they glare at him like a predator eyeing a cornered deer. Their lips stretch into a scowl, displaying the sharpness of their teeth; he wants to grasp their shoulders and ease them with his touch like he’s done so many times before, but he doesn’t reach out to them. Not now, not when both of them wouldn’t be able to take it, even if he longs for any sort of connection with them– the feeling of their fingers, tearing the tender skin of his neck should be enough. He doesn’t dare to ask for more. 

“Candy–”

“Shut the fuck up.” Their voice is hoarse, trembling with rage, it sounds almost broken, ruined. “You’ve got a lot of nerve showing yourself around me after what you did. I told you I would kill you if I see you again, I fucking told you.”

Absorbed in thought, Luna doesn’t notice the presence of another, who’s watching her closely with barely hidden amusement. And when she does, finally, turn around she’s met with Daeran, sitting comfortably on a bunch of cushions with a wine glass in his elegant hands. The ties on his shirt are loosened and the curve of his lips is nothing short of inviting; it’s a familiar look on him, Luna’s seen it before, but she lets the moment linger nonetheless.

And he is all too happy to bask in her attention, judging by the way his eyes light up even more, yet when he speaks, it’s in that typical mocking tone of his, “Ah, my dearest Commander, you have finally decided to grace me with your presence. I’ve only been waiting for almost an hour now.”

Her reply comes in the form of a self-satisfied smirk along with words, laced in fake innocence. “Perhaps, I wanted to keep you in suspense a little, Count. Leave you helplessly guessing whether I shall show up or not.” 

Luna approaches him slowly, purposefully slowing down her steps, as she looks him up and down again– any hits of subtlety in her gaze are gone, and there’s a flash of sharp teeth in her growing smile. Once she notices Daeran’s eyes dart down to her lips, she instantly pretends to lose all interest in him, focusing instead on the bottle of wine which stands near him, but not without brushing her hand against his shoulder as she leans down to pick the beverage up.

Sept 9th, 2024-

At 7:55pm I step out onto the fire escape from my 3rd floor flat in a tenement on Millionaya Street. I love to soak up the view before I head downstairs for my nightly walk around the Imperial Winter Palace complex.

I lock the door behind me and turn around to see this... a building that has stood for 262 years.

From the Palace Park, formerly Palace Square, I look up at this immense building sitting right in the middle of a modern city. An architectural snapshot of a world where rococo was the fashion.

I usually make sure to leave 5 mins before 8pm because that is when they change the Palace Guards along the Palace Embankment, right next to the river Neva. That guard on the horse is a Lifeguard of the Imperial Guard. His name is Alexander, but I know him as Sasha from our time in high school.

He lets me peer into the windows, which is not allowed for obvious reasons. I just can't help myself but to peek inside and see all the wonderful things I couldn't afford in a lifetime.

This side is Palace Passage, it has a museum dedicated to the Romanov Dynasty which continues to this day with Ivan VII. When the Monarchy was restored, this museum replaced the Hermitage Musuem exhibits that were displayed in the Winter Palace during the interregnum. It has 6 basement levels!

Those 2 windows on the left of the second floor belong to the dining room. The light is on right now so the Imperial family must be sitting for dinner.

The museum closes at 8:30pm and is free to residents of St. Petersburg, if you go to the second floor you can peek into the palace windows. I wonder what these two are plotting in this dark hall with only 1 duty lamp.

I cross the crosswalk, and I am back on Millionaya Street and my tenement at the end of the Palace facade.

When I pass by the Great Church with its onion dome, I always see the votive candles illuminating the gold leaf gilding on the walls. I say a little prayer for my mother.

And we are back to my tenement. Now time to huff it up the 3 flights since my slumlord is too cheap to install an elevator.

Final Result(s)

Oh, how the time flies! It truly feels like yesterday when we've announced the creation of this tournament. And yet, it has only been a little over a month (there weren't THAT many Romanov monarchs, and we are very efficient). Nonetheless. On this very fine day of 22.1.2024, we are both proud and saddened to announce the ending of this tournament. As said in a previous post, this blog isn't quite dead, not when there are other tournaments to promote, and so far we still have a horse in the Napoleonic Sexyman race (if you haven't heard of this, it's over at @napoleonic-sexyman-tournament) But there will be no more polls, at least none created by us, and no regular posts. If you'll miss the fun and games of picking your favourite historical monarch, we have a few recommendations:

@rulers-of-poland-tournament is also nearing the completion (sadly, they have already kicked out all of our candidates, because of course they have, the damn Poles)

@best-hohenzollern-ruler is also ongoing

@best-bourbon-monarch is still going on, and probably will for some time

@best-braganza-tournement also has already started

@best-pope-ever is also a thing, so for all of you papists out there, you can join the conclave

@besthrestate is a bit different in character (you are picking the best state of the Holy Roman Empire), but pretty much the same in spirit

Now, enough preamble, onto the results!

THE CROWN OF MONOMAKH

Main tournament was a profoundly tense affair, especially at the finale, where we had a very close race between everyone's favourite (though by no means the most) toxic girlboss and the one mildly less autocratic than the rest. And oh my, what a competition it was - would the electorate's love of girlbosses and sense of fun prevail over the plain old moral considerations? After all, when it comes to competence, you could make the case for both. In the end, thanks to two well-placed last minute endorsements, Alexander II. prevailed and gained the title of Best Romanov Monarch! A round of applause for Sasha, everyone!

THE TRUE HEIR OF RURIKIDS

This one kind of got out of hand when your esteemed admin didn't manage to learn from history and turned to the FUCKING POLES for help. As a result, the electorate of @rulers-of-poland-tournament overran the poll and let Władisław IV. Vasa win a decisive victory. Our new absolute ruler has assured us that he has already declared war on the meddlesome Poles for this (for the record, second place, also pretty decisively, went to Boris Godunov).

BEST ROYAL FAVOURITE

Okay, we get snubbing our great forefather Filaret once, but two times? And he gets NO VOTES??? For shame! This electorate has disappointed us immensely. Otherwise, the results are pretty much what you'd expect; the one and only almighty chaos gremlin has come out on top, and Ekaterina II. fans out there can at least be content with this title for their beloved's long-time partner (possibly secret husband?).

BEST RULER OF KIEVAN RUS'

Because Rurikids don't have their own tournament yet. Anyway, this electorate has shown a slight (though not as pronounced as you might think considering these are Romanov enjoyers) preference for the toxic girlboss flavor of monarch, so no surprises there: Saint Olga, of course it's Saint Olga.

BEST ROMANOV PALACE

We've been told this one was kinda unfair, since we avoided some very obvious candidates. considering its historical significance, we suspect the victor of this one would easily win anyway, just not THAT decisively. Anyway, the best Romanov palace is Winter Palace, and it's not even close.

WORST ROMANOV MONARCH

As a nice bookend to this post, we are handing out the title of Worst Romanov Monarch together with the Best one! We thought this one might not be representative of the actual state of affairs, considering the unusual quickfire nature of this poll, as a result of which the attendance seems to have been low... But looking at the results, this sounds about right. Of course the electorate that crowned Alexander II. the best Romanov monarch would think his son was the worst one. Anyway, hooray for Alexander III., the Worst Romanov Monarch! *unethusiastic cheers*
