og naruto narts? love him. adore him. i miss that dumb little punk kid i loved him challenging the system and wanting to change it and help people. i /wanted/ him to inspire people like kakashi and gai's gen to do the same and realize how fucked up their childhoods were being weapons of the state at like 6 and 7

shippuden narts? He just rubs me the wrong way. started out good with gaara rescue arc, but then all his pizzaz left and let his obsession of sasuke be the only priority. (This isnt his fault, but kishi writing it so ONLY naruto could kill or defeat most of the enemies with his new op move was so boring to me. none of the secondary cast got to do shit) He also didnt take one second to question if his endgoal is still the same since he turned out to be exactly the opposite of "anyone can be hokage" bc he turns out to have the specialist blood of all and got revealed as a nepo baby and chosen one. He licherally became complicit and changed next to nothing as hokage in the end. the status quo remained the fucking same. Naruto rejecting the hokage position bc he recognizes neji was right is so much more interesting to me

Naruto is at his best when sasuke isnt involved imho. I adore his interactions with everyone else bc he truly loves his friends and family, but him and sakura were so delusional over sasuke but didnt actually Know him and his trauma they just loved the Idea of him. the way they talk about it, they act like sasuke was kidnapped and didnt CHOOSE to leave and even tried to kill them multiple times. shikamaru stronger than me, it'd slap the shit out of both of them

I wish they'd head on addressed the whole "sasuke's whole family was slaughtered in front of him" together and not "you have to come back so we can be a team and things can be normal again like nothing ever happened and fight me!" naruto would be the first one to offer to pull up on itachi with him lets be real lmaoo. I wanted him to offer sasuke support to BOTH tackle the injustices of the leaf. it's kinda like hiruzens passiveness with orochimaru and danzo. never holding certain loved ones accountable he was the same way with obito and even hiruzen himself. (is he even aware of hiruzen's part in the uchiha massacre or obito killing his parents?? then pardoning orochimaru?? HELLO???)

There were moments where i did see our boy shine thru, but then the god powers bullshit hit. in short, bring back my punk little man. his pure intentions were ruined by bad writing

my naruto endgame for him is not stuck at a deskjob he hates with a nuclear family he neglects and more he chooses to give up the hokage job to someone who actually can enact change and who isnt from a prestigious family. travels around helping people hands on and finally gets the peaceful life with found family he never had. advocating better for the next gen.

I feel like the misogyny in fandom is only partially the fandom's fault. Let me explain: if the piece of media you're a fan of has a 50/50 female to male ratio, and treats its female characters with the same love, nuance and respect they treat their male characters with... Obviously you have a bigger chance of having your favorite character be a woman instead of a men.

If there's only one or two women, if they're written like shit, if they're not allowed the same complexity (because they're just set dressing or because "feminism dictates female characters can't have flaws" lest they call you out) well obviously you're gonna gravitate to the more nuanced male characters. If you don't care enough to write compelling female characters why should the audience feel compelled?

Don't get me wrong, even great female characters get sidelined in favor of "tall dudes with (dubiously) homoerotic tension". But in fandoms with majority female characters/really compelling female leads, the vibes are completely different. Even if there are still assholes. A great example is the fandom of Game of Thrones vs the fandom of A Song of Ice and Fire. When all your female characters either feel the same brand of girlboss/badass or are framed as annoying/evil while most of your male characters (even the evil ones) are painted as cool and badass as opposed to having a full cast of nuanced characters of both genders... yeah misogyny is gonna happen.

So yeah, we do need to work on our internalized misogyny and we do need to point out when we or the fandom treat female characters unfairly. But we also need more stories that love their female characters as much as their male counterparts. No one has the guts to hate on the female characters of The Locked Tomb Series. Mostly because why would you read a book with a mostly queer female cast about necromancy and the awfulness of love if you hated complex female characters??

We should try to give more attention to those stories. Once you start asking "isn't it weird there's no interesting women here?" When you watch/read/listen to a story you find yourself not caring much for a lot of shows. Hell it's why I can't watch most shonen anymore and why I gave up on supernatural at some point. As a "consumer" (hate that word) I also have the option to stop caring about a show that clearly doesn't care about me (or any woman for that matter).

Does this mean you can't read Sasunaru fanfic anymore? No, but when you start a new show you might want to keep that question in mind. And you also may want to consider specifically searching out for works about women or that care about their female cast as much as their male counterparts.

The fandoms don't yearn for the misogyny as much as we think. I've seen some fandom really work the terribly written female characters into extremely compelling stories. Or write new female characters in fandoms with barely any (shout out to "Local Skate Dads Adopt Three Sons and a Hooligan" for adding like three new female characters to a show with one and a half).

Our internalized misogyny is left alone to fester in a desert, deprived of good female characters. Of course people develop an almost paraphilic obsession with M/M ships when they've been trained from birth on shows that don't care for their female cast (if they have any). We center men because society centers men. And we have to do the individual job of decentering men/centering women while also aknowledging that the people that make our shows aren't doing the job.

Also if you're reading this and wondering "what even is good female representation? What kind of show should I watch?" Read the locked tomb series. Trust me, it is a religious experience (not just for women, it has so much gender in it).

Has this all been a ploy to get you to read about TLT? Yes. I also recommend The Magnus Protocol for podcasts, and Derry Girls for tv shows. They're all so good.

1. Normal world: Naruto is 19 and he just ended a toxic relationship with Sasuke. Because of that, Naruto is picking random street fights and failing his clases in uni. Kakashi (33) is a teacher in the same university that Naruto is in, he’s not his teacher but recognises Naruto because his former English teacher and a well known author, Minato. Kakashi decides to help Naruto to get in the right track and slowly falls in love with each other. Kakashi has been a playboy, only looking for hookups since the death of his first love, Obito Uchiha (died in a traffic accident). Sasuke is a son of a wealthy family who keeps his sexuality and his relationship with Naruto since his family disowned his elder brother, Itachi, for choosing an art career and be with his boyfriend (choose any akatsuki character you would like XD). Sasuke and Naruto had an on and off secret relationship since highschool but it all ended when the Itachi incident happened. Sasuke still looks for Naruto from time to time.

2. It’s like a similar plot of Sekaiichi Hatsukoi but without the non con shit. Naruto is 25 and quit his job at his father’s well known editorial company because of rumours from his former coworkers. He ends up in another know editorial company and edits romantic graphic novels or it could also be shoujo manga. Kakashi (35) is the head of that section of editors and is a former student of Minato. This could also have the same dynamic as the scenario 1, Kakashi was a playboy and falls for Naruto and Naruto had a toxic relationship with Sasuke. The only slight change is that Naruto has some difficulties of being open to others about dating men since he is the successor of a well known editorial company and doesn’t know that his parents would be okay with him being with another man.

I want a modern au sasunaru fic where Sasuke and Naruto actually grow up together as best friends and somewhere in the middle of high school they actually admitted their feelings and got into a relationship with each other but kept it a secret because Sasuke wasn’t out yet, fearing his fathers reaction. (Though Fugaku would have actually accepted him even if it would take him a second and this is accurate to canon Fugaku who actually accepted his son’s choices even if he disagreed with them)

Due to his own insecurity they eventually break up after only a few months. Silently agreeing to forget about the experience and just stay best friends. Naruto is heartbroken of course but if the Sasuke doesn’t like him that way (which is what Naruto thinks) then it’s not the Uchiha’s fault.

Sasuke comes out eventually but not before having to spend the rest of high school watching Naruto go through a slew of relationships one after the other. From Neji to Sai to Hinata and his latest one being Gaara. Constantly wondering if he’s too late and has lost his chance with his soulmate because of his own ‘cowardice’. Then there’s Naruto who of course still holds a flame for Sasuke but he’s not gonna be weird and try to pick up where they left off just cause Sasuke is out now especially since their last attempt was such a disaster cause Sasuke obviously doesn’t like him the same way or it wouldn’t have gone so badly right?

Then there’s Gaara who’s a lot more perceptive than them both and is very aware of Sasuke’s feelings for Naruto. Gaara is not an asshole and he’s not gonna be mean and manipulative but that doesn’t mean he’s willing to give Naruto up without a fight either.

So just give me this angsty love triangle between these 3. Sasuke constantly having to hold back his jealousy and try to be satisfied with just being the best friend. Naruto trying really hard to move on and Gaara enjoying his first healthy relationship with the first person who’s understood him for who he is and Sasuke is just internally screaming on the sidelines.

WEEKLY WIP

Single dad Sasuke and his babysitter, Naruto. Sasuke has realised his feelings for Naruto are getting a little beyond professional, so he tries going on a first date to quell his suddenly active hormones. Obviously, it doesn't work.

This came out of me in a rush! I've decided to put all my time into finishing Drum Sticks and Rose Quartz first, but this is a fun little project you can expect more of!

Sasuke busies himself in the hallway mirror.  Fixing his hair.  Tugging his shirt straight.  Adjusting the black and silver rings on his fingers.  

“Woa, you look smart,” Naruto comments.  He’s picked Sasaki up and is windmilling him around the kitchen.  Sasaki giggles in utter delight.  “Another date night, huh?”

Sasuke bites his lip.  “Yeah, another date night.”

Naruto pauses.  “And you sound so excited about it.”  Sasaki is already pounding Naruto’s shoulders with his fists, demanding he keep spinning.  Naruto does.

Sasuke only shrugs.  “Would you think I’m cringe if I said I feel too old for first dates?”

Naruto laughs.  He stumbles, and grips the back of a chair to steady himself.  “Hey, I’m like nine years younger than you, and I feel the same way.”

“So, that makes me ancient?”

Naruto nods.  “Yeah, guess it does.  So you should be grateful you’ve found anyone in your old age.”

“Har har.”

Sasuke hopes he hid how hard his chest twinged at the reminder of their age gap.  Not that Naruto is underrage, god no.  He’s twenty-three, spry, and started babysitting for some extra cash while he attempted to finish his personal trainer course.  Sasuke found his name through a friend of a friend.  Truly, some gym-frat-looking-bro showing up on his doorstep was the last thing Sasuke had wanted of someone who would be put in charge of his son, but he had been desperate and unable to say no.

Naruto proved himself sent by angels.

He was clean, neat, polite (the bare minimum).  But he never drank alcohol in front of Sasaki, or even when Sasaki had been put to bed.  He would do his homework at the kitchen table until Sasuke got home.  He wasn’t a great cook, his meals mostly consisted of rice, chicken and broccoli, but he was always kind enough to make Sasuke a serving for his lunch the next day.  

Most importantly, Sasaki loved him.

Naruto would show him all the cheats on the video games he was playing, but kept it to a good ninety minutes at night, and never any time before bed.  He would teach Sasaki new words, read to him if he was having trouble sleeping, and had taught him how to play soccer in the courtyard just outside the townhouse.  

He walked him in the park, rugging him up on colder days, and bringing spare water on the hot ones.  

And he never accepted tips.

All Sasuke could do in return is pass his name on when others enquired about anyone good to babysit their own kids, which Sasuke was loathe to do.  He knew Naruto needed all the work he could get, but Sasuke felt a strange sense of possession over him, which was unowed and definitely unwarranted.

And Sasuke, a normal, human male with two perfectly working eyes, could never stop noticing how attractive Naruto was.  And how that was only enhanced everytime Naruto rushed to Sasaki with a tissue whenever he sneezed.  Or when Sasuke came home and the vacuuming had been done.  Or when Naruto cut his rate in half when Sasuke had mentioned he was hard for money.

Or the one time he had come home to Naruto, shirtless, feet hooked under the couch and doing sit ups in his living room.

Sasuke had almost passed out with the rush of heat that went straight to his groin, and an unfortunate realisation had come over him.  He wasn’t just physically attracted to Naruto anymore.  Which, in of itself, was its own problem.

Hence, the first date.
