The Dance of Light and Shadow: Understanding Form and Depth

In the world of sketching, light and shadow play pivotal roles in bringing two-dimensional drawings to life. Each object, regardless of its shape or complexity, casts its own unique shadow, dictated by the direction and intensity of the light source. From the sharp-edged shadow of the cube to the soft, curved shadow of the cylinder, the interaction between light and form defines depth, volume, and realism.

This study explores how light behaves when it strikes different surfaces—whether it’s a flat plane, a curved cylinder, or a complex irregular shape. Notice how the areas closest to the light source are illuminated as highlights, gradually transitioning into mid-tones before plunging into deep shadows. This contrast creates the illusion of depth and gives objects their three-dimensional appearance.

Mastering light and shadow is essential for any artist, as it helps in understanding perspective and form. It teaches us how to visualize light wrapping around objects and how shadows ground them in space. This knowledge not only enhances realism but also adds drama and emotion to artwork.

Flat Character Study! I wanted to demonstrate of how to perceive basic shapes in anatomy and I found that these characters my favorite flat art style on the graphicmama website. I sketched out using the basic shapes to make a character I have previously showed off to see if the study worked and it did help a lot. I see him as like a hybrid between Pepsi man and a 90’s kid so he’s very flexible to use dynamic posing especially when he skates. Inspiration form a game called Jet Set Radio.

[Grand Torino / Zootopia / Chicago] I started doing 30-minute moviestudies, try to make at least one each day. I wanted to share a few of them with you... I focus on simple shapes, because my main goal is to get the colors right. I don’t use the eye dropper tool, I pick the colors manually.
