Izakaya Kamenoya, Part 4
All right, it is time for the final article in my series on Izakaya Kamenoya, the bar all the shinigami drink at in filler episodes! Today, I will be making a valiant attempt to identify what kind of food items are available! Bleach is rather famous for portraying food as blobby lumps, so wish me luck!!
The history of izakaya is pretty interesting, but they basically evolved out of sake shops that started serving food to attract customers and also to entice them to hang out (and keep spending money). They tend to serve small plates, which are shared. This can span a really wide range, though, from just a few basic bar snacks, up to a fancy restaurant. Izakaya Kamenoya tends towards the more full-service. According to the article I linked above, people didn't do a lot of cooking at home in the Edo era--they cooked rice at home and purchased pickles and other simmered goods to top it with. This fits right into the Seireitei to me--shinigami have demanding jobs and disposable income (at least moreso than Rukongai folks), so they love to eat out.
Check out this Ladies' Night Spread, for example:
Tumblr media
That looks like two big platters of sashimi in the middle to me, and that's clearly tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) on the far right.
The episode very kindly gave us this close-up of Assorted Meat Skewers.
Tumblr media
I am not quite sure what the brown slabs served over lettuce are...tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlets), perhaps?
Tumblr media
In this shot you can also see some little fish. This looks similar to a picture I found of eihire (grilled stingray fins, served with mayonnaise), so I am assuming this is a something similar.
Boys' Night Out is going to be less fancy, because the boys in question are broke, but it's generally the same stuff-- sashimi, tamagoyaki, skewers, BUT they also have this cool table-top grill! It's called a shichirin, apparently, and is often used to grill yakitori, which it looks like exactly what they're doing. I feel strongly that this is a thing Iba is super into. Like, you go out drinking with Iba, you know he's getting the shichirin. The fact that shichirin translates to "seven wheels", cements this even harder into my heart: it is both grilling (manly!) and a reference to Squad Seven, what is not to love?
Tumblr media
How about captains? Ukitake and Kyouraku seem like a pair of guys who enjoy a good meal.
Tumblr media
LET'S TALK ABOUT THAT FISH.
So. Um. Well, it looked to me like it was a fish that had been made into sashimi and then the sashimi was sort of arranged over the skeleton of the fish, with the head in tact (If you are not able to tell how I was able to discern that from this potato-quality screenshot, it's fine, I'm not so sure either). Anyway, I looked that up to see if it was a thing and it sure is! It's called ikizukuri and you do it while the fish is still alive. Today, it's a controversial practice, but Soul Society be Soul Societin'!
In less upsetting news, it looks like they each have a little cup of chawanmushi (egg custard with savory mix-ins, like mushrooms or shrimp). Also, lots of skewers and bowl of colors (pickles maybe?)
I also have this shot from Kyouraku and Amagai's first venture, but I can't tell what anything is:
Tumblr media
Clearly a less impressive spread, but they only just got there, so maybe there's more to come. Croquettes in the middle perhaps? I would guess that those little square cups are matcha pudding but Kyouraku hates matcha. The smaller plate kinda looks like more skewers, but it also seems to small to be skewers.
Moving on the other end of the price scale, what does the Extra Value Menu at Kamenoya look like? I'm sure Hisagi and Kira know!
Tumblr media
The anime did not give much help here. It looks like they have more of those ?tonkatsu?. Kira's got a plate of...sliced cucumbers maybe? The beige lump in the middle has some colored specks in it, so I'm guessing a fried rice of some sort.
Tumblr media
As a final note, I love these little blue cups of orange bulbs that Kira's emotional support team is enjoying here (also more tamagoyaki). They seem like they should be easily identifiable, but they don't look like anything in the two dozen "things to eat at an izakaya" articles I read for this. Is it a fruit? Is it chestnuts? If you have an idea (or you can identify anything else that I couldn't) please let me know!

Note
In this sunken scroll, do you think it’s referencing the seven rings of hell? I’m curious to hear your thoughts on it.
Tumblr media
theres 7 deadly sins and 9 circles isnt it? i can say with certainty that the 7 rings is a play on 七輪 shichirin, a kind of small charcoal grill.
Tumblr media
and we know how much the salmonids love the cooking theming… the kanji 七輪 literally translates to '7 rings'
(this is what ariana grande accidentally got a tattoo of too before having to fix it lol)

Just a little thing about @anotherfloridaman's comment that I recently read (the thing where Fem!Balam went apeshit with Iruma's parents)
~~~
Shichirin was furious.
Just hearing or even seeing their faces already makes her irratated; and that's something if it comes to Shichirin
Iruma's parents stood infront of her. She clenched her fist to avoid any rash actions.
"We want him back."
What?
Shichirin stood there with a confuse face; though, her annoyance is still very much noticeable. "I-I'm sorry?" Shichirin utterd
Iruma's biological mother smiled "We want him back."
Trying hard to contain her anger, Shichirin sighed. "Why?" She asked.
"Why do you want him back?" She asked again, venom lacing her words.
Mr. Suzuki clasped his hands "Because it feel quite lonely." Mrs. Suzuki nodded. "Despite having a large mansion and money, we can't seem to enjoy it much without Iruma-kun." the blue haired woman voiced out.
"So please, if you may," She paused, tilting her head to face Shichirin with a plastic smile on her face.
"May we have out son back?"
BOOM
A strong blast of wind made Mr. and Mrs. Suzuki soar away as their back hit a brick wall.
The blue haired man groaned as he held his forehead "Wha-"
THUMP
The blue haired couple was now pinned to the wall. Their necks being choked by unfamiliar chunky vines. Both pathetically struggled to try and escape the strong hold of the vines until they felt menacingly heavy and loud footsteps.
Mr. Suzuki tilted his head up and knitted his eyebrowns, he clenched his jaw with shear anger. "What's the meaning of-"
Punch
The punch was strong. Strong enough to make him bleed. Mrs. Suzuki was frightened. She desperately tries to reach her injured and almost passed out husband.
Keyword: Tries.
The woman was punched in the face instead. Her face now bleeding as well. She tiredly looks up, her face twisted to a horrified expression.
A demon.
She hollered, still desperately trying to release herself from the grasp of the strong hold of the vines.
"Your what?"
She was stunned. Hesitatingly, she anxiously gaze at the owner of the venom-laced voice.
Mrs. Suzuki horrifyingly screamed.
The dark bloodthirsty glint in Shichirin's eyes sent a cold shiver down the blue-haired woman's spine.
"Your son?"
The demon chuckled.
"Your SON?!"
Her laugh was menacing. Mrs. Suzuki felt herself tremble in fear.
Shichirin's laugh slowly dies into a chuckle. Her smile disappeared and her expression altered.
"You were never Iruma's parents."
The woman trembled at the demon's gaze. She swollowed her salvia mixed with her own blood.
"You neglected him."
Punch
"You forced him to work."
Punch
"You treated him as your servant, instead of treating him as a son."
Punch
Each punch was painful. The impacts slowly turn more painful and painful every punch.
She doesn't care if they cry.
She doesn't care if they beg her to stop.
She doesn't give a single fuck about them.
Shichirin paused, she gazed at the blood soaked couple. Her skin and clothes were splattered with blood, just like her fist and vines dripping with the blood of the Suzuki parents.
Tch, or are they even parents at the first place.
Her stare was blank. There are no remores on her eyes. Only anger.
Just as about Shichirin lifted her fist and vines, her focus was cut off by a loud "wait".
Both Mrs. Suzuki and Shichirin turned to the owner of the voice, revealing the one and only Mr. Suzuki.
"Please wait!" He pleaded. "Please, don't- please don't kill us!" He weezed at his words, choking on his own blood.
Shichirin raise a brow "And why is that?" Her voice was rather calm, but it was still able to scare both Mr. and Mrs. Suzuki.
Mr. Suzuki choked out "Please! I- W-we'll do anything! I'll do anything! Just- please don't kill us please I beg you!"
His pleads were strong. It was enough to fool anyone.
And by anyone, I mean the unwitnessed people.
Shichirin is a witness victim. She witnessed the abuse and neglect of Mr. and Mrs. Suzuki to their own child.
So ofcourse, it wouldn't work on her. But then again...
"Anything?" She questioned. Shichirin saw a glint of hope in their eyes. Secretly, she smirked.
"Yes, yes! W-we'll do anything!" Mrs. Suzuki commented.
Shichirin plastered a fraud sweet and innocent smile. "Is that so?" she asked again. The two blue haired humans nodded their head.
Her sweet and innocent smile turned dark.
"Then die."
And just like that, Suzuki Kiyoshi and Suzuki Nobuko were beheaded.
Murdered by the one and only,
The Gargoyle, Platinum Guardian, Balam Shichirin.
~~~
I had fun writing this ngl! It was enjoyable seeing Iruma's biological parents perish.
And before anyone asked about this: "Shichirin is a witness victim. She witnessed the abuse and neglect of Mr. and Mrs. Suzuki to their own child."
So remember the unfinished bulletin board story I made? The one where Fem!Balam and Iruma got sent to the human world by accident?
I thought about Iru's parents seeing him again, and asked him to go back "home" with them.
Shichirin approved of this since she thought it would be nice if Iruma got to spent time with his parents again. But she didn't knew about them being neglectful.
So one time where Shichirin came to visit the Suzuki household, she saw Iru's parents treating Iruma as a servant.
Long story short, Iru's parents are dead (not really but hope they do) and Shichirin took Iruma back.
That's all now!
(Note: I might crosspost this)

As Momo speaks, Jewel is on her feet in the kitchen fetching things out of cabinets and drawers. She already knows what she wants, and she thinks Momo will like it too.
Sousuke Aizen – a name that bares little more than a curse upon those who think, hear, or speak the name. Momo in particular has his essence entrenched into her being. He’s a tombstone with a heartbeat and the spirit has his claws in her.
It’s as Jewel has said before; he haunts her.
Tumblr media
“Last I heard, he was pinned in his seat and was tryin’ his damnedest ta get outta his restraints.” Wouldn’t say he was the most comfortable, but she understood the comparison. Aizen was comfortable in not having to suffer the way Momo suffers.
Sliding a balcony door open, she sets the shichirin down and rounds back for the plated food and skewers.
“He left you poisoned. With him ‘near’, all you’ll feel is sick. You gotta detoxify yer innards of him.”
Jewel sets herself by the small grill and activates the charcoal with a lighter, then starts lining the meat and vegetables through the skewers.
“Do you still attach a lot a’yer identity to him? What’s in you that still gives ‘im this much power over you?”

Top 3 Japanese Charcoal Grills for Authentic Grilling
Tumblr media
Japanese charcoal grilling is a time-honored tradition that has been passed down through generations. It is known for producing a unique smoky flavor and tender texture that is highly prized by grill enthusiasts around the world. Japanese charcoal grills are typically made of high-quality materials and designed to withstand high temperatures, making them ideal for grilling a wide variety of foods. Based on our tests, we have narrowed down the top three best Japanese charcoal grills on the market that offer exceptional features and performance. Whether you're a seasoned grill master or a beginner, these grills will help you achieve an authentic Japanese grilling experience that you won't soon forget. So, let's take a closer look at these top-rated Japanese charcoal grills and find the best one for your grilling needs. 1. Best portable charcoal grill: Grill,Charcoal Grill Folding Portable Grills Although this grill is built of metal rather than the typical clay or ceramic coating used in traditional Japanese grills, it nonetheless adheres to the general concept. However, due to its adaptability and practicality, it merits a mention in this evaluation. This is, in my perspective, a contemporary take on a traditional yakitori. This substantial charcoal grill has a grilled surface size of 175 square inches. The ISUMER Charcoal Grill is lightweight, versatile, and long-lasting. You can carry this grill anywhere you go thanks to its detachable legs. This is excellent for camping, tailgating, and trekking. The four removable legs on this yakitori grill make it the perfect portable grill. It might be a useful griller for outdoor gatherings or a camping buddy. Stainless steel makes up this vintage yakitori grill. Any type of meat can be cooked on it with lump charcoal because it is reliable and simple to use. On the lowest level of this premium stainless steel barbecue is a charcoal grate. Customer Reviews The assembly is simple. The grill has handles on both sides to make carrying it easy. Controlling the heat is simple because to the side ventilation. Reason to buy:  ✅ Stainless steel charcoal model ✅ 15 x 12 inches of cooking space ✅ Detachable legs ✅ Good for campsites Reason to avoid:  ⭕ More challenging to clean 2. Best Overall: Fire Sense 60450 Yakatori Internal Grates Charcoal Chrome Cooking Grill The handcrafted porcelain Fire Sense Large Yakitori Grill is reminiscent of traditional Japanese tabletop grills. This is a larger tabletop Japanese yakitori charcoal barbecue perfect for grilling chicken, vegetables, and skewered meats. Excellent clay grill with lots of useful features is the Fire Sense Large. This grill has 157 square inches of cooking area and a one-year warranty. On the base, there are 2 movable vents for regulating the temperature. It has a cooking grate with a chrome plating that is simple to clean. Its 17 x 10 inch surface area may be suitable for use on patios or balconies of houses or apartments. At least 3 large chicken skewers or 6 tiny chicken skewers can fit on it. To ensure a uniform distribution of heat, the interior is coated with ceramic material. Customer Reviews High temperature settings between 450 and 500°F are not a problem for it. It is a portable and small Japanese yakitori grill. Reason to buy:  ✅ Handcrafted clay base ✅ Chrome grilling rack ✅ 2 air vents ✅ Includes a stand and handles Reason to avoid:  ⭕ Clay exterior must be kept dry. 3. Best table-top charcoal grill: Noto Dia Table-top Charcoal Grill, Shichirin Hida Konro (Rectangular) Traditional yakitori grills like the Noto Dia are Hida Tabletop charcoal grills, which are frequently found in Japanese eateries. Chinese characters are used as the design on a special Japanese paper cover for the grill's body. Because the grill has no handles or legs, as you may have noticed, its body and other metal pieces may become heated when in use. Therefore, take great care to avoid unintentional burns. Grills made of diatomaceous earth have better heat insulation. Remember that Diatomaceous grills cannot be washed, thus after using the grill, you simply need to let it cool down before wiping it down with a moist cloth. Use of this grill during tabletop grilling events is ideal. On the front and back of it, there are three vents. Customer Reviews They are not adjustable, however the base allows for unrestricted airflow. To stop heat from migrating to other surfaces, the foundation is made of wood. A grill made of zinc-plated iron is included with this barbeque grill. Reason to buy:  ✅ Authentic Japanese charcoal grill ✅ Diatomaceous earth construction ✅ Iron cooking rack ✅ Wooden base Reason to avoid:  ⭕ Smaller than other models. RELATED: Best Gas Charcoal Combo Grills 4. Best Hitachiya USA grill: BBQ Charcoal KONRO HIBACHI YAKITORI Grill 21x9x7.8 with Cover For strength, this grill has an additional metal strip running the length of its body. It is 24 pounds and 21" × 9" x 7.8" in size. By employing charcoal, specifically Bincho-charcoal, the ratio of UV rays to fire is perfectly balanced, and the scent of the charcoal stimulates your hunger. Built of diatomaceous earth bricks, this grill was heated to a temperature of 1000 C. This indicates that it is durable and won't degrade even after repeated use. To regulate the temperature, there are air vents. If there is adequate airflow, you can use this grill both indoors and outside. Reason to buy:  Far-infrared radiation effect, excellent durability and thermal insulation Waterproof and UV-resistant cover. Reason to avoid:  Expensive 5. Best value: Kinka BBQ Diatomite Charcoal Grill Barbecue Hibachi Stove 77 x 23cm BQ8T Konro yakitori Japanese The Kinka charcoal yakitori grill has a grill over a container for holding charcoal. The grill also features heat-controlling vents that are adjustable. The grill is sturdy and doesn't have any moving parts that could malfunction. The 32.28 by 10.63 by 9.45-inch Japanese BBQ grill is a good size for grilling meat for five to seven people. The grill produces excellent grilled results since it does not use hazardous liquid fuels like convectional grills. The large surface area will make it possible to simultaneously prepare a variety of meats and vegetables. Diatomite earth, a material resistant to heat, is used for the outside. The extra-large handles make moving it simple. To retain heat and ensure consistent cooking, it has three movable vents on the front. There are three separate cooking grates included. Reason to buy:  ✅ Large yakitori grill ✅ Easy to clean ✅ Diatomite exterior ✅ Oversized handles Reason to avoid: ⭕ Expensive 6. Best durable: BBQ Charcoal KONRO HIBACHI YAKITORI Grill DIATOMITE Stone 12.5x9x7.8 with Cover A Japanese charcoal grill with outstanding heat insulation and toughness is the Hitachiya. The grill is reinforced with a metal strip running the length of it. It weights 24 pounds and has dimensions of 21 by 9 by 7.8 inches. The yatokiri grill may provide the customary flavor and aroma by employing charcoal. For the grill to control airflow, there must be space and vents. In addition, you may cook anything on the grill, however chicken, steak, pig, fish, and vegetables work best. Customer Reviews Reason to buy:  ✅ Heat insulation Reason to avoid: ⭕ The grill requires area and vents to control airflow Conclusion After trying out several Japanese charcoal grills, we have concluded that the best Japanese charcoal grill is the Konro Grill. This grill offers a unique and traditional Japanese cooking experience that cannot be replicated by any other grill on the market. It is made from high-quality clay materials that retain heat and moisture, allowing for precise temperature control and even cooking. In addition, the Konro Grill comes with several other useful features, including a compact and portable design that makes it easy to transport and store, a large cooking area that can accommodate a variety of dishes, and a durable, weather-resistant finish that makes it suitable for outdoor use in any climate. While the Konro Grill is a high-end option, its performance, authenticity, and features make it the top choice for anyone looking for a Japanese charcoal grill that offers unparalleled cooking precision and versatility. Everything to Know About the Hibachi Grill
Top Restaurant Prices - Website with The Latest Restaurant Prices. Everything to Know About the Hibachi Grill Hibachi is a word to refer to grilled Japanese-style cuisine and you can find this in restaurants like Benihana. In the United States, hibachi pertains to a tiny cooking stove that uses charcoal. But in Japan, this is known as shichirin. Some people also refer to hibachi as the use of an iron griddle in cooking food but in Japan this is known as teppan.
So what exactly is hibachi?
Hibachi means ‘fire bowl’. The original hibachi was invented during the Heian period and it’s believed to be an open-topped pot – often cylindrical. It was designed to keep a room warm. These traditional heating devices were as small as a vase but some were made into wooden tables to heat water and warm the hands. It wasn’t until the 1800s that the hibachi’s use extended to cooking food – grilling traditional Japanese treats to accompany tea.
What’s the difference between teppanyaki and hibachi?
Teppanyaki is another kind of Japanese grilling that utilizes a teppan – a flat griddle made of cast iron. Often, the chef or cook grills the food in front of the diners/guests. Aside from meats and veggies, it’s also used to cook rice and eggs. Hibachi chefs recommend that when cooking, one must use a binchotan, this is a type of Japanese charcoal with a white color. This charcoal can stay lit for up to 5 hours and reused many times. The heat it produces is more stable than regular charcoal and it also does not give off a burnt odor. If binchotan is not available, briquettes will do. Often, hibachi grills cook yakitori which means “grilled bird.” But basically hibachi grills are great for skewered chicken, using kushi, a skewer made of bamboo or steel. Hibachi restaurants cook a wide array of food items, not just in skewers. Often you’ll find prawns, beef, fish, and veggies on the menu in addition to chicken.
What’s the hibachi sauce made of?
Also known as the yum yum sauce, this sauce is very popular in steakhouses although it didn’t actually get invented in Japan. It’s something made stateside and is considered a crucial element of hibachi restaurants in North America. The sauce is drizzled on noodles, veggies and fried rice. It’s also used as dipping sauce for sushi and shrimp. The ingredients for yum yum sauce include butter, paprika, rice vinegar, sugar, ketchup, mayo, onion powder and garlic powder. A bit late to the (bbq) party, but here’s my Ariana Grande- I mean, shichirin.
The way I explained it to English speakers was: Imagine you wanted to get a tattoo saying “Sexy B*tch” but after badly google translating, decided to get a tattoo saying “Hotdog”.
So Asian languages are not the only confusing ones!
But yes, personally I would love a BBQ (temp) tattoo. But maybe one saying 焼肉 (Yakiniku).
