K-Drama "When The Phone Rings" Faces Backlash for Sign Language Scene, Issues Apology

The popular K-drama When The Phone Rings has sparked controversy due to a scene in its first episode involving sign language. The scene, which aired on November 22, shows female lead Hong Hee-Joo, played by Chae Soo-Bin, working as a sign language interpreter in a news studio. A transmission error freezes the broadcast with Hee-Joo's hand gestures, causing the sign for "mountain" to resemble an obscene gesture. This led to criticism from the Deaf community, who felt the portrayal mocked sign language.

Several sign language users and organizations, including the sign language club at Chung-Ang University, voiced their concerns. One complaint read, "It's not right for hearing people to demean and mock sign language, a vital means of communication for the Deaf." The gesture's misuse was described as traumatic for the Deaf community, who have long dealt with its trivialization.

In response to the backlash, the production team of When The Phone Rings issued a formal apology on November 29. They clarified that the intention was never to offend or mock sign language but acknowledged that they fell short in properly portraying the struggles of the Deaf community. The team expressed regret for the misunderstanding and committed to better understanding the importance of sign language in future productions.

When The Phone Rings has gained popularity, airing its fourth episode on November 30, and is quickly becoming a hit. The drama, which explores communication and relationships, features a couple navigating a marriage without speaking, only to be shaken by a threatening phone call.

The production team emphasized that sign language is a critical element of the storyline, aiming to highlight its role in fostering communication between the main characters. They assured viewers that they would work to prevent such mistakes in the future, asking for continued support and constructive criticism.

The full apology stated: "We apologize for causing concern through a scene involving sign language. We understand the criticism that When the Phone Rings handled sign language inappropriately, and we had no intention of mocking or belittling it. We humbly acknowledge that we fell short in portraying the challenges of the Deaf community and will ensure that such mistakes do not happen again in the future. Sign language plays a crucial role in the drama, and we aim to convey its value as an essential communication tool."
