2001 Copenhagen - Number 22 - Anita Lerche & Simon Munk - "Mit hjerte det banker"
youtube
Two performers, one who sang at Parken Stadium, the other who has contributed to a Danish Eurovision entry. Not this song - it didn't make it through to the final five of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2001 unfortunately. But Anita Lerche sang the US national anthem at Parken when Brian Nielsen fought Mike Tyson while Simon Munk was the co-writer of Drama Queen for Denmark in 2007.
Singing Mit hjerte det banker (My Heart Beats) - a song that's all about that urgent, first full heart-pounding you get when you just catch a glimpse of the One - there's a distinct lack of chemistry. The distance between them is notable, and much of the song is sung to camera with the stolen glances few and far between. Are they even talking to each other?
Nevertheless the dreamy quality and haunting melody of the song push it up in my rankings. Their vocals are quality and harmonise well together. The arrangement is pared back and gives the entire song an air of mystery. The mood is... cool. Even as the lyrics speak of warmth and heat. Perhaps they're both playing it slow.
After this single DMGP experience, Simon continued song-writing. Apart from Drama Queen, he contributed to other DGMP entries.
Anita took a path far less travelled. On a holiday in India in 2005, she fell in love with traditional Punjabi music. Since then she has almost exclusive written and recorded music that reflects Indian culture, especially Punjabi culture. She's tried to break into Bollywood and has actually (like many national finalist) recorded Danish dubs of Disney films. For her work both musical and charitable in India, she's won huge numbers of awards
Here is her most recent released recording, from earlier this year. This is Anne Lerche singing the Sikh sacred hymn Mil Mere Pritma Jiyo for International Women's Day

Annabelle Pham was born in San Jose, California and raised in an Asian immigrant household in South San Francisco. Growing up working class, her parents encouraged her to pursue her education while also helping raise her sickly younger brother, RJ. Playing softball and being a bit of a rebel, despite her shortcomings, Annabelle had the opportunity to attend an Ivy league college on a partial scholarship, which she rejected after her father's restaurant was vandalized and robbed.
Rather than use the money for school, she pushed her family to use it to repair their restaurant. Annabelle would choose to attend a 2 year college in a CTE program since it was more affordable, working part time in her family's restaurant while she searched for new employment.
While job searching, she became curious about the recruiters office in her neighborhood, and next thing she knew, she was in the army (much to her mother and father's disappointment.)
At some point, then Private Annabelle "Kit" Pham would meet CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell while fighting alongside SAC/SOG officer Alex Keller. Impressed by the young woman's resolve and improvisation, Laswell would choose Anna as one of the three women she'd first suggest to join Taskforce 141 to John Price.
While hiding from enemy forces who'd kidnapped her in a foreign city, Annabelle's quick thinking kept her alive while her teammates were delayed on their rescue.
Anna got her callsign "Gremlin" from her unpredictable and unhinged behavior thanks to her fellow Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick. Hiding in walls, crawling in vents and ambushing enemies easily thanks to her small stature and the old fashioned element of surprise.
Smart, resourceful and good with her hands, she's a loyal friend and a cautious person whose instincts are good if they aren't clouded by her own feelings. Anna is a hopeless romantic who wears her heart on her sleeve, which can be a good and a bad thing...Especially when a certain Commander seeks to exploit it.

Mizu! Spill the tea for weird asks: 11, 17, 28, 36, 71 and 90!
THANK U 4 ASK
11. what you have for breakfast on an average day?
I am an egg haver, so if I have the opportunity it’s usually either scrambled eggs with green onions and hot sauce (cholula original) with some toast or tortilla, or fried eggs on leftover rice with green onions and whatever other leftover veggies there are. For cereal it’s crispix with 2% milk. Oh, and tea with honey, these days usually oolong.
17. most frequently worn pair of shoes?
My Frye engineer 8Rs, got them in this patina’d black so it reads black charcoal or dark brown depending on light and context. I’ve had them for... 8 years? Something like that, wore them straight out of the box on a trip to Paris, hauled my ass around on them immediately in winter, trekked on cobbles and through the metro and all over the Louvre without a single blister, did them dirty by wearing them repeatedly in the wet and not given them time to dry through, etc. If you find Frye boots that fit and can afford them, get them. I need to take mine to a cobbler to get them really clean and refresh the leather a bit but otherwise I expect them to last at least another decade.
28. five songs to describe you?
I don’t like this question because I am not really a song listener... I listen to albums and like, obscure instrumental chillhop playlists. I don’t really identify strongly with songs on a personal level. There are songs that fit my current mood really well? And songs that make me feel An Emotion... but not songs that I would pick to like, equal me. If I had to make like a fanmix for myself, I have no idea what I’d put on it. Here’s five musicians/bands I really like that I think everyone should give a listen: Nina Simone, In Love With A Ghost, Sondre Lerche, Paris Combo, tricot.
36. what is the first meme you remember ever seeing?
Whichever was earlier: badger badger badger badger or ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US. AYB is the one I remember like, going to a con and meeting my internet friends IRL for the first time and then we walked around the con making AYB references and other people like... got it. A revelation.
71. least favorite pattern?
Is this asking about like... textile patterns?? I love all patterns. Pattern mixing is the best. But I guess, I really don’t like animal pelt prints. Like, it’s kind of gross? I’m (obviously, see above) fine with leather, and also stuff like real horse hair or whatever, but faux snake print or leopard spots just kinda bug me, and if you’ve got like, a faux zebra ottoman or a tiger stripe rug that’s a callback about colonialism I wish people would be more thoughtful about. I love animals and if you wanna have like, a scene of a giraffe herd at sunset on your curtains that’s awesome, but giraffe spot curtains are grotesque. I don’t like the connection between leopard print and sexuality, either.
90. luckiest mistake?
One time many years ago I was in a used record shop in Santa Barbara and I asked the guy “Do you have any ELO?” and he was like “what???” but didnt turn down the music and I was like “ELO? mumble mumble Orchestra??” and he was like “OH, yeah, they’re kind of obscure...” and he seemed impressed by me, and I was like, wtf, this douche thinks electric light orchestra is obscure?? and is impressed when a chick asks about them? and then he handed me a CD for Yellow Magic Orchestra, this Japanese electronic band from the late seventies. Yellow Magic Orchestra SLAPS.

Samstag, 08.

COC day 10: Song inspired (Get ready for a long-ish caption) So, I was going to do a fic for this day, from Baz POV, and it would be inspired by the song 'Two Way Monologue' by Sondre Lerche, which I really love. It would have been like an internal debate on what to do about his love for Simon, or something like that. But I felt really creatively drained, so I decided to draw this quickly instead. I'm not super happy with it, but my goal with COC is just to make something everyday and post it, no matter what. So here is a slightly subpar portrait of Baz that I did, inspired by the two sides of his inner voice telling him different things, which is how I interpret the song.

sparkling water, perfume
(luxury asks)
sparkling water: What are you top three songs for the summer?
Uh…hm…I’ll be honest, I just sort of listen to whatever other people put on, a lot of the time? But say I’m, like, taking Lottie and Danny somewhere, we play CDs on the way a lot–or, well, we did back when there was anywhere to go.
How about I just share the top three albums that get played on repeat in my car stereo. Mostly stuff my parents started us listening to:
Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams
Paul Simon - Concert in the Park
Sondre Lerche - Heartbeat Radio
perfume: If you could make your own fragrance, would it smell like?
There’re a lot of smells I like, but I’m not sure how wearable some of them are… I think it’d be neat if there was a fragrance that smelled like the beach, like salt and sand and very cold water. Or what if there was one that smelled like whipped cream? You know, there’s that very light sugar scent that whipped cream’s got–I’m not the only one who’s smelled it, am I? Am I nuts or does whipped cream have a smell?
Haha…I dunno, you should’ve asked Lottie this, she’s the one who’s creative.
(L: It’s okay, Sawyer, I know what you’re talking about! I think that’d be a great perfume!)

Tommy Pham was born during the 4 year disappearance of Phillip Graves in Charleston, South Carolina to a distraught Annabelle Pham after a brief tryst with a stranger. During the times his mother couldn't care for him, little Tommy stayed with his Uncle RJ or his grandparents.
When his mother married his stepfather, 3 year old Tommy had some trouble adjusting to him, but Graves would regard Tommy as his son just as much as his younger brother was, Phillip Jr.
Tommy and Junior's bond strengthened as they grew up, with the upbeat and sensitive Junior under the protection of his tougher older brother.
Both Tommy and Junior followed in their parent's footsteps and joined the army and eventually the Shadow Company, each brother talented in their own right: Tommy was a fighter, and Junior was a leader.
When his mother goes missing on a mission with the 141, his stepfather would refuse to divulge information on her whereabouts, only assuring him they were looking for her with little update.
Frustrated and with little faith in the Shadow Company, Tommy would turn to the Taskforce 141 for answers: specifically his godmother, Lt. Isobel Williams.
Tommy, now under the tutelage of the 141, is as unpredictable and crazy on the battlefield like his mother, but what he lacks in stealth (due to his height) he makes up with in brute force.
He takes himself a bit seriously and has the "patience of a Saint", and tends to hold his feelings close only to unleash when he's on the field later. While he and his stepfather have a somewhat strained relationship after he left the Shadow Company, he and Junior have become closer on their mutual goal to find their mother.
