Songs in the Night
Tumblr media
When believers enter “the dark night of the soul,” those times when God’s mysterious will, worked out through difficult providence, makes the Lord appear veiled and unapproachable, what should they do? As we look at Scripture, one conclusion is apparent. They should sing. For the biblical testimony is that God provides “songs in the night”—lyrics to bring to Him in times of great heart distress.
We would not, at first thought, naturally reason that a time of struggle, suffering, or pain is also a time for singing, especially when God seems absent and hidden. It can almost seem cruel to suggest that a hurting, disillusioned soul should sing. Crying, wondering, and groaning seem more fitting. But singing? Is not lifting our voice in song for happy times? Certainly, but singing is also for trying times. Indeed, perhaps especially so.
Christian songwriter Michael Card has noted that in the book of Psalms, sixty-five of the 150 songs found there, or more than 40 percent, contain lamentations. As His people live in this sin-cursed world, God knew that they would need help pouring out their souls to Him in distress. So, He provided them with songs to sing at those times—songs in the night.
Job’s younger friend Elihu testifies to this truth when he acknowledges that God “gives songs in the night” to those in distress (Job 35:10). Likewise, the psalmist, so troubled in soul that he says he moans when he remembers God, stirs himself with the words, “Let me remember my song in the night” (Ps. 77:3, 6). He then goes on to sing five agonizing lines of a song that, stated in questions, describe how spiritual midnight truly feels. “Will the Lord spurn forever, and never again be favorable? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” (vv. 7–9).
One such song in the night is Psalm 42. The psalmist, far from God and His people, taunted by his foes, says he longs for God like a hunted deer pants for water (v. 1). He describes his experience as having the breaking waves of God’s sea washing over him (v. 7). He gives expression to dismay, as seen in the twice-repeated question of the psalm: “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?” (vv. 5, 11).
However, this song also provides proper heart redirection. For in the midst of his despair, the psalmist also recalls these truths: “By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life” (v. 8). He answers his repeated question with the same refrain each time. “Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” As Martyn Lloyd-Jones reminds us in his work Spiritual Depression, psalms like this one encourage us to “preach to ourselves” instead of just “listening to ourselves.” We can counter our feelings of defeat and discouragement by preaching to our souls sermons provided by God in His Word.
Truly He puts our tears in a bottle (56:8).
When Jesus entered the dark night of His soul on Calvary’s cross, He had these same songs on His heart. He quoted from the Psalms, expressing both His despair in the words, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Ps. 22:1), and His hope when He finally said, “Into your hand I commit my spirit” (Ps. 31:5). Friend, if your Lord needed these words at His blackest hour, so do you. When you do not know what to say or pray, when you have groaning too deep for words, when the darkness falls, then turn to the songs in the night the Lord Himself used, and that He still provides for you.

". . . bands like Blondie, Talking Heads, Television- they all get lumped into the punk rock genre, because they were all playing at CBGB’s at the same time that punk rock was beginning to emerge onto the scene. But what you gotta understand is that nobody called themselves 'punk’ at the time. The label was applied retroactively, by the media, and later by streaming platforms. Are you listening, V?"
"Mhm."
"They were influential in the scene, sure. But you listen to Marquee Moon or the Disco Song and tell me what that shit has got in common with punk rock."
"Mm-hm. What’s CBGB mean?"
"Country, BlueGrass, and Blues. Obviously. It was in the mid 1970’s when what we would call punk rock really started to gain traction, starting with bands like the Ramones. It was partly inspired by girl groups-“
"Girl groups, eh?"
"Oh yeah. Big time. Girl groups dominated the airwaves in the late fifties and early sixties. The Ronette’s, the Shangri-la’s, what have you. Everyone in the scene loved girl groups. And why not? They had it fuckin’ figured out. 4/4 time signatures with catchy three-chord melodies. So simple, yet so brilliant. Leaders of the pack, if you will."
"That had the cadence of a joke. Was that a joke?"
"Forget it. What's important is, punk took that, and then made it go harder and faster than music had yet seen to that date. But because it was so also damn simple, it was the kind of shit that would make anybody who saw them perform think, hey, I could do that. And then a lot of them, they did."
"Damn that’s crazy."
"You're damn right it was. That was probably the single greatest thing punk itself brought about, by the way, if you ask me- the DIY ethos. "
"Hm."
"Xeroxed zines. Trading self-produced seven-inch singles. No getting fucked around by a record label. Just normal, everyday people using their limited means to make serious and influential work. You didn’t even have to be good at playing your instrument, as long as you said something that was real.
"Hmmm."
"I showed you the Misfits already, right? Pioneers in the 'horror punk' genre."
"Uh, maybe. I think I’ve seen their tee shirts."
"Yeah, I bet you fucking have. Well, supposedly Glen Danzig wanted to be a comic book illustrator, but I guess he didn’t have what it took to be a professional or something, because he started a band and designed all their graphics instead. I mean, he straight-up stole the Crimson Ghost, which is probably their most recognizable piece of iconography, from an obscure comic from the 40’s. Whatever. But he silk screen printed their band merch by hand in his mom’s basement- which is fuckin’ awesome, if you ask me.”
"Mm.”
"Ian MacKaye, though, is the first guy that comes to mind when you talk about American DIY attitude- he was the granddaddy of the DIY scene, over in DC."
"Oh shit, I think I remember this. Straightedge, right? The archivist-type figure."
"Very good."
"Who’s boyhood friends with. . . Henry Rollins."
"Correct."
"Who was also in the Misfits, right?"
"No, he was in the Rollins band, dumbass. Among others. Henry Rollins just has multiple prominent Misfits tattoos is all. God. Are you even paying attention? This is important."
"I'm in Hell, for the record. This is Hell for me."

Ranting and Raving: "Come Dancing" by The Kinks
youtube
When looking at the British Invasion of the sixties, there is something known today as “The Big Four.” That group refers to the four bands that led the musical invasion on American shores: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and finally, The Kinks. The Kinks were entered into that club way later than the other three. It took more time for people to realize that the band were of the same caliber and helped pave the way for a lot of music we hold dear today just the same as the others.
But the Kinks ended up having a wildly different career trajectory than those other three. Mostly because they were banned from playing in America from 1965-1969.
The exact reasons for why tend to boil down to this: When attempting to tour America in 1965, there was tension between primary songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Ray Davies and his brother, guitarist Dave Davies (who also had beef with at-the-time drummer Mick Avory, sometimes losing it and fist-fighting him on stage), they all had beef with their tour promoter, Betty Kaye, who was unable to pay them in cash (which was the agreement that was made and unable to be fulfilled due to poor ticket sales at the beginning of the tour) and when that happened, the band was pissed and decided to retaliate against her. This in turn led her to filing a formal complaint with the American Federation of Musicians (basically the organization who has the power to withhold work permits for overseas musicians in the event that, you know, they piss you off and are difficult to deal with). That complaint held weight and the band were, well, banned from playing in the states. By the time the ban was lifted in ‘69, the British Invasion was over and done with and the tastes had changed.
In a way, I think this actually ended up being a blessing in disguise for them. The other three bands they’re grouped with all ended up getting Americanized in some way due to spending extended time here and trying to appeal to us. By contrast, The Kinks were stranded and remained aggressively British, so they stayed weird and their music remains all the more fascinating to Americans because it wasn’t made with any of our sensibilities in mind. The only times the band snuck over here and scored a Top 40 hit twice during the seventies. “Lola” was the big one in 1970 (peaked at #9 on Billboard) and “Rock and Roll Fantasy” was the other one in 1978 (peaked at #30). So as far as America is concerned, the seventies weren’t the best decade for the band in terms of chart success. They would go mostly ignored.
The Beatles, The Stones, and The Who all had a great time here in the seventies... but the eighties belonged to the Kinks, who had a way more fun time during that decade than any of them. By the start of the eighties, the Beatles had been broken up for a decade (one of them would be dead by the end of 1980, one of them sits out most of the first half of the decade, one of them doesn’t know what the hell they’re doing, and one of them is Ringo) the Stones were about to go on autopilot and enter suck for a decade, and the Who were quickly suffering burn out. On the other hand, The Kinks had been enjoying critical and commercial success and enjoyed experimenting with the new wave and punk sound that had been sprouting up in Britain. It certainly helped that a lot of new wave and punk bands loved them and were covering their songs. Listening to albums like 1981’s Give the People What They Want and 1983’s State of Confusion are good examples of Ray Davies’ versatility and adaptability as a songwriter. He just seemed to understand the changing times better than the rest of the old British Invasion bands. I mean, bloody hell, you don’t call an album Give the People What They Want unless you’re damn sure you know what they want. The Kinks have five songs that have been Top 10 hits on Billboard: “You Really Got Me” (#7 in 1964) “All Day and All of the Night” (also #7 in ‘64), “Tired of Waiting For You” (#6 in 1965), “Lola,” and finally, their last and quite possibly the best song Ray Davies wrote in his long career, “Come Dancing” (#6), released in April 1983 (for America, Britain had it in October ‘82) and our subject today.
“Come Dancing” is one of those hits that defies most explanations. By all accounts, Americans at the time should’ve wanted nothing to do with it and it never should’ve been a hit here. By the time the song hit its peak in July 1983, It didn’t fit in with anything else that was on the Top 10. That is, unless there’s a part of your brain that thinks the Kinks can share a playlist with the likes of The Police, Irene Cara’s “Flashdance... What a Feeling” (from, you guessed it, the movie Flashdance), Michael Jackson, Culture Club, and Kajagoogoo, which sounds like a name I made up, but I swear to god I didn’t. Adding to the anomaly is how Ray Davies didn’t write this with an American audience in mind at all. For starters, he makes no attempt to hide his accent (although Ray is so aggressively British you’d have to be the most daft and schtewpit wanker alive not to notice). Other giveaways are how the song talks about dance halls (which is primarily a British concept. He also uses the French word “Palais” to mean “dance hall,” which only further alienates us Yankees) and the song borrows its title from a popular British dancing show, Come Dancing (it’s mostly known today through its revival, Strictly Come Dancing).
“Come Dancing” is mainly concerned with two topics: 1) It’s a song examining the changing times and memorializing the past. The dance hall of Ray’s childhood is long gone and has been replaced with several different things ever since. 2) It’s a story song about his older sister, Rene. More on her later.
If this song became a hit for any reason, it’s because Ray Davies’ ear for melody never failed him. That main melody that plays through the song is ridiculously infectious. It does what every great song wants to do: sneak into your brain and have you hum it for a long time after it’s over. Musically, it’s delightfully strange. The chorus has that British Invasion sixties sound that taps into boomer nostalgia (which would quickly wrap the eighties into a vice grip tighter than a rattlesnake) but it never fully consumes the song. The main melody has that sixties sound when played on a guitar, but it’s almost drowned out by the odd choice in keyboard sound, which sounds like something you’d hear on a calliope or a boardwalk in the summer. While being odd, it’s an immediately recognizable sound that works really well. It’s very easy to start dancing to it and, more importantly, it’s such a great melody that it never gets obnoxious or annoying to hear.
The most interesting thing about it is that it’s a melody that feels like it’s fighting to find a spot in a specific time period. Dave Davies’ guitar makes it sound sixties, the keyboard turns it distinctly into 1983, and then it travels back to the big band era of the forties and fifties when horns play it at the end of the song. It’s a melody that’s clearly nostalgic for something, but it and its creator never find exactly what it’s nostalgic for. There’s an argument to be made that the entire song is nostalgic for everything and that’s why there’s no specific choice. In that sense, the song perfectly captures that feeling of experiencing changing times. What you knew is gone forever and you’re having to come to terms with the new. The overall production, the keyboard doing the main melody, that new wave sound and Dave’s heavy guitar riffs during the halfway point of the song, and the chorus are all firmly in the new. The keyboard during the verses, the acoustic, folksy guitar heard throughout the song, and the big band horns at the end are all the faded voices of the old trying to be new again. Ray Davies is very well aware of time and the way time changes things as major themes within this song. Those themes show up as early as the first lines of the song, when he lays out the history of the local palais in just four lines:
They put a parking lot on a piece of land  Where the supermarket used to stand Before that they put up a bowling alley On the site that used to be the local palais
Local palais -> bowling alley -> supermarket -> parking lot. Anybody who has lived in a small town for decades or has lived long enough to see major changes to places can rattle off history like that to you. Even if you haven’t, sometimes you can just walk into a store and you can faintly see the remnants of what used to be there, possibly something to the tune of, “This coffee shop used to be a Pizza Hut.” Ray Davies establishes that theme from a distance immediately so that he can zoom in just as fast and begin to tackle the song’s real reason for being: a story song about his older sister, Rene.
Ray Davies has six sisters, all of them older than him, but it’s Rene who hit the jackpot and got this song written about her. The backstory of “Come Dancing” is this: Ray wrote the song in honor of his sister’s love of dancing and to honor her passing away from a heart attack on the night of Ray’s thirteenth birthday while out dancing at the local palais. She was also the sister that bought Ray’s first guitar for him (you can see the kid in the music video air strumming a tennis racket, which I’ve always assumed was a nod to Ray being given a guitar). In a 2014 radio interview with NPR, Davies recounted the stories that inspired the song:
...she was told she had severe heart problems, but she loved to dance. And the doctors told her, she walked down the road, she would probably have a heart attack. So she bought me this not-very-expensive Spanish guitar and gave it to me on my birthday. And she - we played a few songs. She played a song on the piano. And I tried to play with her. And she said she was going out now. And I would watch my sister go out.  It was a sunny afternoon. And she walked down the road, and my mother stood at the gate. And that was it. And the next morning, we got a call from the police. She'd been - she had died dancing at the ballroom in London in the arms of a stranger. And they came to break the news to my parents. So it was - the birthday was forgotten, but that's irrelevant.
From the last line of the first verse to the end of the song, it becomes a beautiful eulogy about the loss of Ray’s sister and the dance hall that held her happiest memories. The story that Ray tells in that NPR interview is found all throughout the song’s lyrics. Ray mostly focuses on the boyfriends and dates that his sister would go on and even how Ray could see her coming and going (“Out of my window, I could see them in the moonlight / Two silhouettes saying goodnight by the garden gate”). Ray paints a fun, upbeat, and bouncy picture of his sister as your typical fun-loving girl who loves to dance and would make her dates work for (limited) satisfaction.
Another Saturday, another date She would be ready but she'd always make them wait In the hallway, in anticipation He didn't know the night would end up in frustration He'd end up blowing all his wages for the week All for a cuddle and a peck on the cheek
The lyrics stay just as light and peppy as the song they’re attached to. Despite the fact that Ray is writing this song about a woman who passed away twenty-five years before this song existed, the only sadness to be found is the death of the palais (The day they knocked down the palais / Part of my childhood died, just died).
The final verse of the song is the most important part. We’ve established that in real life, the person this song is written about passed away twenty-five years prior. In the song, she isn’t. Ray Davies utilizes the power that comes with being a songwriter and fully rewrites her ending. This part is real: “Now I'm grown up and playing in a band / And there's a car park where the palais used to stand.” These lines aren’t:
My sister's married and she lives on an estate Her daughters go out, now it's her turn to wait She knows they get away with things she never could But if I asked her, I wonder if she would
With this final verse, “Come Dancing” becomes a song that resurrects the past and gives it new life. “Come Dancing” isn’t just a nostalgia song, it’s a resurrection song. A nostalgia song usually is too preoccupied with the yearning for days gone by, the dread that comes with knowing that the old days are gone forever and you wish like hell that they were back. “Come Dancing” isn’t that. The final refrain of the chorus has Ray singing, “Come dancing / Just like the palais on a Saturday.” The key words are “just like.” Ray knows that he can’t literally bring the palais back (or his sister, for that matter), but as a songwriter, he can resurrect the feelings and the memories of the palais on a Saturday. He can resurrect the feelings and the memories of his sister and how she would go dancing.
It’s a beautiful and loving tribute to someone dearly departed. If you believe in any variation of the phrase, “The dead are never truly gone so long as the memories remain,” then this song does what a lot of songs do when they make us think of the people closest to us: it resurrects their memory and helps us remember them and how we carry them with us.
It’s the most unexpected hit they could’ve had during the second half of their career and it remains one of their sweetest and most lovable songs. It represents the romanticism, the cleverness, and the theatricality that made the Kinks such a wonderful band and so distinct from their peers.
“Come Dancing” is the best possible tribute. It brought Ray’s sister and the old local palais back to life every time he and the Kinks played it. They come back to life every time you play it on something. If you have someone special to you who loved this song to death, they come back too whenever you play it. Hell, when Ray Davies eventually leaves this Earth, this song will also bring him back to life every time someone plays it.
Time moves, whether we want it to or not. But if we’re lucky, we’re able to capture a few magic moments and make them immortal. Nothing is ever fully dead so long as there’s someone there to fill it with love and resurrect it.
So, why not come dancing?
It's only natural.

rich people by carsie blanton. this is an understated, acoustic little thing with piano and upright bass that builds up with some snaps and some...not quite call and response but something similar. it is direct and to the point, very much in the vein of labor songs and union songs.

i, very hard of hearing, transcribed this by HAND off spotify before i found this video bc i liked the lyrics so much. you're welcome.
Who run the world? It ain't the Jews Rich people don't pay no dues Who did the crime? It ain't the blacks Rich people don't pay no taxes Who took your job? It ain't immigration Rich people with corporations Who threw the vote? It ain't rednecks Rich people with thick fat checks
this interview is from two years ago (and reading about how seriously everyone took covid two years ago is...disheartening, now in the winter of 2022) but is a good answer to a really vague question about how she puts a song together (also explains why it pings so many of the union/labor song associations in my head):
I would say what I’m aware of in songwriting is that if you’re trying to fit a message into a song, it had better be a really catchy, exciting, fun song, because otherwise the message will not be heard. So I think I’m a songwriter first, and most of the songwriting I admire is what I would call American popular songs. So most of my favorite songwriters will just try to write a hit. That’s true in the ‘30s and ‘40s and in the Motown era. So that’s the writing I really admire. And I think in trying to get political messages into songs, I try to make the hook the thing that drives everything else. So it has to have the right energy, it has to have a catchy melody, or nobody cares to listen to the message.

Batman: Noël is a 2011 graphic novel written and illustrated by Lee Bermejo. dipping a toe back into reading with some batman comics. i love batman oneoffs bc there are eleven billion of them and i don't have to have read several thousand other comics to understand them. this one's schtick is: what if batman is scrooge? it's not very successful in the storytelling aspect of this, bc by DC editorial mandate batman and gotham cannot change or grow.
however! it is beautifully rendered. this spread was quite lovely imo, very funny to think sixties tv show batman and edgy grimdark 2010s batman are the same guy

pasta failure. i have two boxes of mostaccioli (penne with no grooves) from really early in the pandemic when instacart gave me that instead of normal begrooved penne. in the interest of eating my pantry down before i move, i made sausage and peppers with onions, threw the leftovers in some diced tomatoes, and threw all that on top of this pasta.
this did not work bc this pasta has no grooves and cannot hold the tomatoes. the peppers and onions, which are cut in strips (as sausage and peppers with onions is typically made) are a little more successful but this shit sucks man. and i still have another whole box. other than ziti (and even that's questionable, bc the sauce issue remains, also i hate ziti) i don't think there's a good use for this pasta and i'm not completely sure why it exists except as a cruel italian joke, maybe.

But I feel like there isn’t an app where you can play a simple game such as guess the song. The Spotify Original podcast, which will be released in both Japanese and English, unravels the genius behind Kojima’s ideas and creative thinking. Beginning September 8, he’s bringing the creativity behind those games to Spotify in his new podcast, Hideo Kojima Presents Brain Structure. He’s been recognized as a leader of cinematic visual expression and storytelling in video games since pioneering the stealth game genre with Metal Gear, and more recently, he gained worldwide popularity for DEATH STRANDING. Japanese game creator and head of Kojima Productions Hideo Kojima is one such mind. The best games immerse players in intricate worlds, leaving fans to marvel at the mind that created such carefully detailed settings, characters, and stories.

The daring date
This was prompted by an awesome anon! Enjoy some long overdue Allen60!
Fandom: Detroit become human | Ship: Allen60
Allen sat in his office, absent-mindedly staring through the blinds. It has been a week now and still he hadn’t gotten used to the new face in the force. The new familiar face. A RK800 unit, dubbed Sixty not to confuse him with his exact twin in the building next door. To be honest, the SWAT Captain had no idea what to think of the android. Normally he would at least try to keep his prejudices against them at bay. They were people now and Allen had no problems accepting the fact once he had spoken to a few of them. But this specific one… He simply didn’t trust him and still searched for reasons to get him out of his team.
The official file for the bot was spotless. But of course, rumours had spread still and being part of the raid on Cyberlife tower, the SWAT team could confirm them. Sixty had threatened Lieutenant Anderson and would have without doubt killed him, had the android not been shot himself. Right in the middle of his forehead. He was supposed to be dead - every human would be. But no, he was repaired and deviated and thrown into society. Deviancy was supposed to be the wondrous medicine to every wrong an android could possibly commit. But Allen wasn’t so sure when androids had had a certain programmed freedom even before deviation and this specific android had still decided to shoot Hank when there must have been other possibilities to fulfil his mission. And who said androids weren’t capable of committing crimes, just like humans? Who said that Sixty, just because he deviated, wasn’t still loyal to Amanda or a certain belief? And now he was infiltrating SWAT, possibly trying to gain their trust just to betray them later. He knew he had no evidence for his theory, but his gut had proven themselves to be correct almost every time, so Allen would keep an eye on the new android. Who knew, maybe-
‘Captain?’ He looked up to the door, where Frank had suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Without knocking, as always. ‘Err… Yes?’ ‘You joining game night this evening?’ ‘Whose turn is it?’, he asked caught off guard. ‘Jensen’s! I think he decided on starting with poker, but I haven’t asked.’ ‘Yeah, I’m in. I think I can manage 7pm.’ ‘Great! I’ll let him know.’
Allen sighed, as soon as he was alone in his office again and decided to try and do some actual work today. In all his paranoia about the new android, he had almost forgotten it was the last Friday of the month – game night. He usually enjoyed them. It was one of these team-building exercises that actually worked as it wasn’t obligatory. Although normally most attended them. The SWAT team really was a team, working atmosphere good enough pulling rank wasn’t necessary most of the time. Allen really hoped the android wasn’t invited. But he guessed not. As in many other points, his team was pretty uniformly suspicious of the RK800 too.
-
It was raining as he parked his car in front of Jensen’s house later that evening. He was a bit late as it seemed, but he was greeted with enthusiasm nonetheless and a coke was pushed into his hand. Most others were already sitting at the table with beer and other beverages and someone hastily gave Allen his seat and poker chips as he was clearly loosing already. A few pleasant hours and rounds later that was a thing of the past as most of the other players were too drunk to remember the rules or keep up a pokerface. Allen had already driven quite a few into surrender and at some point, as if on a hidden signal, they decided to stop playing. What unfortunately meant they settled on the incredibly uncreative idea to play truth or dare.
Allen sighed, regretting his decision to stay sober tonight, but played along. It could still be fun after all. It started quite simple with everyday questions and mostly silly chores to do on dare. Unfortunately, it didn’t stay that way. ‘Are you single?’, was the first question in the truth-category, Allen sighed deeply over. ‘Why? Are you searching for someone?’, he returned hoping to embarrass the man and be able to skip answering. The other’s laughed, but the one that had asked him just shrugged. ‘Yes, actually, but you’re not my type, no offense there.’ It continued on and Allen felt relatively save, having passed the first awkward question. When it was his turn again, he groaned and demanded “truth” again. He could live with his team knowing intimate details about him. He didn’t like giving them blackmailing material in the form of videos or pictures of him doing something ridiculous though.
Unfortunately, his team had other plans: ‘Come on, you picked that so often already. Choose dare, come on. Would be unfair!’ He rolled his eyes, but caved in quickly as others joined the chorus. ‘Fine. Dare.’ ‘Oh, I actually didn’t think you would allow us’, the other chuckled. ‘I have nothing. You got something guys?’ Oh no. Everyone talked over each other, but it was one, Allen would have guessed Jensen himself, who screamed louder than everyone else: ‘Go on a date with the new android!’ It went dead quiet immediately, but soon they were laughing at Allen’s shocked expression. ‘No. No way!’, he protested, but the rest of his team instantly shook their heads. ‘You have to now! No going back on that!’ ‘I… Fuck, fine, I will ask him on a date, you lunatics. But that’s it, if he says no, that’s out of my hands.’ ‘Deal.’
-
Monday came far too soon, and Allen sat in his office once again, watching the android. He swore then and there to never attend another game night ever again. But well, better to get this over soon else they would bug him for weeks. He guessed the chance of the android agreeing was close to zero anyways. The whole week he had never seen him near any other member of SWAT if it wasn’t needed for work and seldomly speaking more than strictly necessary with his colleagues. He would just go there, ask him and then the android would decline and go on with his business. Simple as that.
He approached Sixty’s desk and the android immediately looked up, seemingly preparing to stand up. Allen gestured to remain seated and he relaxed but nodded at him in greeting. ‘Captain. Anything I can do for you?’ His voice eerily sounded like Connor’s, maybe with a little less intonation. ‘Err… yeah, weird question maybe, but are you free tonight?’ God, this was embarrassing. ‘Oh. Sure. Planning a mission?’ ‘Uhm… No, actually it’s rather personal.’ ‘Personal?’ ‘Dinner?’ ‘Oh’, the android blinked, face unmoving. ‘Sure, what time?’ Fuck. Allen had not expected the android to actually agree. Shit. That was bad. ‘At seven?’ ‘Fine with me. Where?’ ‘Err… I’ll send you the address.’ ‘Okay. Looking forward to it.’
Allen turned around and grimaced as soon as he was out of sight of the android. He glared at Jensen who was barely containing his laughter and entered his office to remain there for the rest of the day. Fuck, now he had to come up with a place to go on a date with the murder bot.
-
He drove up to the sole restaurant in all of Detroit that served both android and human food. He had been lucky to get a table for today. He still didn’t know what the hell he was doing here, but well, worst case he would have to be here for a few hours and call it done. He saw the android already waiting at the entrance and tried to at least fake the polite smile. ‘Hello, Sixty.’ ‘Hello, Captain.’ ‘Err… Allen’s fine’, he commented. Shit, even his team didn’t call him Captain unless outsiders were around, or it was a work issue. ‘We’re not at work after all.’ ‘Okay, then hello Mr. Allen.’ ‘Uh, yeah, okay, let’s go in.’ Awkward.
They entered and were shown their table. The waiter spared them any more small talk, taking their orders for drinks and handing them the menus. A few minutes passed as they both chose their food, but after that they had to wait again until the waiter would come back. And the silence that caused was as uncomfortable as it could get. ‘So…’, Sixty spoke up in the end. ‘What exactly is this?’ Allen’s shoulders sagged a little. ‘Do you want the honest truth?’, he sighed in defeat. The android nodded, and Allen answered: ‘We played truth or dare. They dared me to ask you on a “date”.’ The android huffed with a humorless smile. ‘Well, it’s nice being a part of something I guess, even if it means being part of a joke.’ Allen frowned. ‘What do you mean?’
‘Okay, here are your drinks, what can I get you?’ Allen flinched, he hadn’t even noticed the waiter appearing. Sixty wasn’t as bothered, ordering for himself and Allen caught himself to follow short. Once the man was gone again, the android sat up. ‘I mean that I know you and your team could do well without me.’ ‘That obvious, huh?’, Allen asked, embarrassed about their sentiment being this obvious. ‘I mean, In the last week I barely spoke to anyone and no one even approached me.’ Sixty shrugged. ‘But that’s fine, I get you are close with each other, going on dangerous missions. I guessed as much as I got assigned the job. I hope I can prove my worth to you in action.’
‘I’m sorry’, Allen mumbled in all honesty. ‘It’s just…’ Sixty waited for him to continue, but nothing came. ‘Just what?’ ‘It’s hard to trust you when all we know about you is that you held our colleague at gunpoint and the only thing keeping you from pulling the trigger was getting shot.’ The android smirked. ‘Yeah, I get that. I could explain to you how I was under Amanda’s full control that time, being ordered to stop Connor by any means necessary, or be permanently deactivated myself. But I guess it wouldn’t change a thing, am I right?’
He smiled sadly at Allen, who couldn’t help but feel like a total asshole.  ‘Sorry.’ ‘It’s fine, really’, Sixty reassured him. ‘I guess it just needs time of us working together for you and your team to realise I won’t suddenly go full terminator on you.’ ‘So you were forced to nearly shoot Hank?’ ‘I mean, I was forced to end the revolution or die. I had to stop Connor for that. And Lieutenant Anderson was his weakness. His partner and only emotional support in this world. I guess if you ask if I was forced to kill him, then no, I wasn’t. But it really is a question of how far you are willing to go to protect your own life when you have only lived for a few hours at that point and don’t know what that even means yet.’ Allen stared at the tablecloth, trying to process what he’d just heard. ‘I don’t plan on holding the Lieutenant at gunpoint ever again, if that means anything’, Sixty carefully stated then. ‘Or put my own life about anyone else’s for that matter. I’ve learned my lesson staying with New Jericho, listening to all these android’s life stories and learning what life could eventually be.’
Allen looked up into the android’s eyes, realising to what extend he had misjudged him. ‘What made you chose police work then?’, he asked with honest interest. ‘Honestly? It was a heat of the moment decision. The DPD was hiring and I knew Connor worked with them. I thought maybe that would make it easier for me. Following my initial purpose and living with people that accepted him despite his crimes.’ ‘Crimes?’ ‘Well, he was a spy for Cyberlife initially before he switched sides. And he did kill at least two humans at Cyberlife tower. If you think about it, he actually did worse things than I have. But maybe I misjudged that.’
The waiter reappeared with their food, giving Allen time to make a decision. ‘I will talk with my team’, he stated as he had disappeared again. ‘I believe we all fell for prejudice here. I’ll tell them to give you a chance.’ Sixty eyed him lifting a brow. ‘Captain, do you really think this is necessary?’ ‘Yes, I think so. I don’t think you should be held accountable for something you couldn’t control.’ ‘I…’ The android looked at what looked like blue pudding in front of him. ‘Thank you, Captain. That really means a lot to me.’
They began eating mostly to play down the serious talk, but the silence really didn’t help making the whole thing feel less awkward and unnatural. Allen thought about what to talk about with someone he basically knew nothing about, but only one thing came to his mind. He tried to find something more fitting, but ultimately, everything was better than the silence. So, he spoke up again: ‘Okay, let’s stop talking about work for a while. Let’s talk about you, if you want, of course. What do you like? Any hobbies?’ That seemed to catch the android off guard. ‘I like… music?’ ‘Really? What kind of music? Favourite genre?’ ‘Err… No. I haven’t listened to a lot yet. Any recommendations?’ Allen chuckled, knowing this was a dangerous question as he liked to ramble. ‘Oh, were to start? I have a whole list…’ ‘Just give me a song, I will listen to it.’ ‘Right now?’
Sixty tapped his temple. ‘Android, remember? Can listen to it in my head.’ ‘Okay, not how you are supposed to hear music, but fine.’ He continued to list off a few of his favourite songs and stopped after he thought to have supplied the android with the essentials for now. Then he continued to eat, coughing when Sixty spoke up again: ‘Okay, I listened to them.’ ‘What?’ ‘I can listen to them simultaneously. I liked them.’ Allen stared at him. ‘Okay, that really isn’t how you listen to music.’ ‘Then teach me: How do humans listen to music?’ ‘One song at a time?’, Allen begun, not having imagined to ever need to explain that. ‘And normally coming from a speaker.’ ‘Inefficient’, Sixty commented. ‘But-‘ ‘If you hear one song at a time, you will never have listened to all of them in your whole lifetime.’ ‘I mean, it’s true, but-‘ ‘And you never get to see the similarities in between them. Analysing all the small changes in frequencies and subtle differences in between genres.’ Allen sat there staring. ‘Okay, I think we enjoy music on a very different level then.’ Sixty laughed. ‘I guess so, yes. But humans are inefficient at most tasks, so I don’t blame you.’ ‘Thank you?’, the SWAT Captain tried, but couldn’t help but smile too. ‘Okay then, what else are androids so much better at?’ Sixty smirked. ‘I have a list. It’s alphabetised.’
The evening was actually quite fun after its initial difficulties. Sixty just seemed to need a jump start to get over his hesitant demeaner. Once they had initiated their personal talk, he ended up unveiling he was actually a quite cocky person, sure of himself and almost stubbornly ambitious. But despite that, he really seemed to care for others, wanting to use his strong suits to help those that needed it. Somehow, despite Allen’s previous impression of the android, he ended up liking him and wanting to get to know him better than possible in one evening.
Unfortunately, that very evening was about to end as it got late and already was dark outside. They paid for their respective meal, although Allen jokingly stated his co-workers had specifically asked him to take him on a date. Sixty just laughed and told him they wouldn’t have to know every detail. As they exited the restaurant, the android turned to him before entering the automated taxi he had called. ‘And? Enjoyed your dare?’ Allen huffed. ‘Actually, I did. Obviously, this wasn’t a date, but it was nice getting to know you. I’m looking forward to work with you and… Well, if you want to do something like this again, I would be up for it.’ ‘Really?’, the android asked. ‘I made it to the second date?’ Allen closed his eyes and sighed somehow not knowing what he had expected. ‘Be careful what you wish for, I don’t want to know what they decide to task me with next games night.’ Sixty smirked and opened the door of the taxi. ‘Maybe next time I will be there to decide myself.’ He winked at the Captain and entered the car, leaving Allen standing in front of the restaurant confused. But somehow intrigued, too.

Incurably Romantic - Silco x fem!reader PART ONE
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS
You were a songstress at a new speakeasy - The Cocktail Cabaret - which was racking up new customers quickly. Unfortunately, it rivalled the Kingpin’s bar and nightclub - The Last Drop. Silco soon pays The Cocktail Cabaret a visit to see what the fuss was all about, laying his eyes on you.
WARNINGS: None so far, but I do plan on an NSFW chapter later on, and future chapters will have some violence (the type you’ve already witnessed in the show.)
You are younger than Silco in this fic, but most certainly NOT a child. I estimate his in-show age to be around 40-45, so the reader's age here would be around 30.
The title of this fic is based on the song with Marilyn Monroe! I suggest giving it a listen and I’ve also curated a small playlist for the theme of this piece.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1LdV0KAp8tZiHgMQDfh104?si=ec53ad70838e4b46
In order to help with imagining what the speakeasy looks like, I got inspiration photos from one in NYC and ended up getting ahead of myself, so I also created a few mood boards to set the tone of the fic.
Tumblr media
Okay, now let’s get this party started!!
————
Silco paced back and forth in his office, baffled at how low the number of customers inside his establishment were these past couple of days. Sure, the addicts and party animals that danced the night away under the fluorescent neon lights were still present, but his more refined, influential customers were nowhere to be seen. They were usually the older, more mature business folk who discussed their plans on the club’s upper level. They provided opportunities for Silco’s business to continue to prosper and now with them missing, he was wondering if it would be this way for a long time.
He heard of the new bar that opened up down the street - The Cocktail Cabaret. For god’s sake, he had even approved their request to order and use shimmer to enhance some of their drinks. At least he was making a profit there, but he couldn’t help but wonder if that was where all his valuable customers were going.
He hadn’t been able to see the place himself - the owner had come to his office to talk business. She was an old woman who looked to be around sixty to seventy years old and carried herself with grace.
Fixing his tie and sliding on his coat, Silco made his way outside and towards The Cocktail Cabaret. As he opened the dark wooden doors to the building’s entrance, he was greeted with dim, warm lighting that contrasted The Last Drop's colder environment. The place had a vintage feel to it, with ochre-coloured paint with a metallic sheen and a few tucked away rooms with sage green walls, burgundy velvet sofas and striped corduroy booths, a marvellous bar with an assortment of drinks, and a small stage to the left of the room. The spotlights by the stage were currently off, but he was able to catch a glance at the tall steel microphone that shone despite being in the shadows. The music that carried throughout the room was played through a large phonographs speakers, the sound of discussion and laughter filling the air.
Silco sat down in a corner and ordered one glass of whiskey. They had the good stuff. As he observed and ran his eyes around the room, he proved himself correct - most of the business folk that usually went to The Last Drop were here, drinking away in a separate booth. It took everything in him to mask his scowl. As he took another sip from his cup, the music from the phonograph came to a stop as the spotlight turned on and fixated onto the small stage. The crowd went silent at this, Silco noticed, as a woman with (h/c) coloured hair in a sleek black dress made her way onto the stage.
Everyone held their breath as she walked into the spotlight, her movements fluid like a slow-running river, and Silco found himself doing the same.
“Good evening everybody,” she spoke into the mic, her voice light and feathery, “I hope you all enjoy tonight’s performance.”
And so she began to sing, her singing voice just as beautiful as her speaking voice - silky, smooth, delectable. She sang in a style Silco hadn’t had the pleasure of hearing in person, a rare and classic voice he only had the opportunity to witness through vinyl records.
Now, Silco realized what made this bar so different from the rest as he watched her for the duration of her performance. The bar continued in a hushed manner, loud chatter turning into whispers as they listened to her song.
————
It was wintertime in Zaun, a light flurry of snowflakes finding their way down to its streets. The pure snow turns into dirt and slush the second it steps foot onto the cobblestone roads and alleyways. Perhaps all were cursed to have impurities down here in Zaun.
You were working tonight at The Cocktail Cabaret, a new speakeasy bar owned by the woman who raised you when your mother would not. Clarita was a classy old lady who enjoyed the finer things in life, still pin-curling her silver tresses in intricate up-does and sporting her iconic red lip.
Clarita didn't always have the means to achieve her luxurious lifestyle and had to do various jobs in her youth to get where she is now - be it a bartender, courtesan, or a saleswoman at a local trinket shop. When you reached adulthood, you immediately took on some work in order to assist her in achieving her dreams and along the way, discovered your talent as well. You admired Clarita more than anyone else in all of Zaun and Piltover alike, and she too was proud to call you her daughter.
At last, the fruits of your labour paid off as the two of you opened the speakeasy. You ran your hand across one of the burgundy velvet loveseats as you entered the building, waving to Lola and Carmen - they too were taken in by Clarita when they were children. You grew up with them both, forming a sisterly bond. Lola had an olive skin tone and rich brown hair she kept in long waves down her back. Carmen had dark umber skin with braided hair as black as a majestic raven. Both of them could make a mean cocktail and had mixology skills that you were certain could rival the posh bars in Piltover.
You headed towards the back, snaking your way through the dimly lit hallway and up a flight of stairs, unlocking the door to your room. Taking off your black-fur winter coat and setting it onto your rose-colored Victorian velvet couch, you eyed your attire in your vanity mirror. An off-the-shoulder, body-hugging black gown that had a sweetheart neckline and a high slit up to your left thigh, and a new pair of black stilettos. You accessorized this outfit with a string of pearls that sat cold on your neck, long black lace gloves, and sheer thigh-high stockings with black lace trim.
Swiftly, you grabbed hold of the wine red perfume bottle of your signature fragrance - Dior Hypnotic Poison - and sprayed your neck twice and your wrist once, rubbing them together. You had fought tooth and nail to get a hold of this fragrance - expensive and designer perfumes were hard to come by in Zaun. Most prices were hiked up from resellers attempting to scam young ladies.
It was important to always look your best when performing - it was what reeled in a majority of the customers. As long as you held your head high and carried yourself with poise, The Cocktail Cabaret could maintain its luxurious reputation.
There was then a knock on your door, followed by Clarita’s silvery voice.
“My lovely songbird, may I come in?”
“Of course you may,” you laughed in response, opening the door for her and enveloping her in an embrace. You could feel her spine from where your palms touched her and realized just how old and fragile she was becoming. Despite that, her attitude remained strong - another thing you admired her for.
She took a step back to marvel at the way you looked in your evening dress and sighed.
“Ah, the beauty of youth is unparalleled. You look wonderful tonight, (y/n).”
“Youth has nothing to do with it,” you hummed, “You still look as beautiful as ever, mom Clarita”
“Oh please, you flatter me, child,” she laughed, “Head on out, they’re waiting for you.”
With a smile and small nod, you left your room and headed out onto the stage, watching as everyone sat silently and awaited your performance. You knew why they reacted this way. Some found you beautiful and talented, others revelled in the privilege of being able to listen to a live performance in a peaceful, luxurious environment.
A taste of Topside.
The musical arts - art in general - were scarce in Zaun despite their people's talent. They weren’t recognized the same way Piltovan artists were. Yet here you were performing on a stage made just for you, with the elegance and talent to make it to Topside.
“Good evening everybody,” you finally spoke, taking in the sight of everyone’s eyes on you, “I hope you all enjoy tonight’s performance.”
And so you began to sing, accompanied by the soft background instrumentals provided by a few musicians. It was difficult to find musicians around these parts, even more so to pay them, but Clarita managed to get it done.
You sang for an hour straight before taking a break by the bar. Usually, during breaks, a few men and women would flock around you in an attempt to start a conversation or flirt. This time, however, they all left you alone and stared - in fear almost. You hadn’t had a clue why until you craned your neck to face the man behind you.
You examined him from the legs up. He wore a Piltovan styled three-piece suit with gold filigree lining and a burgundy dress shirt. However, that wasn’t what gave his identity away. As you met his gaze, you recognized the description of his eyes. One as clear as the skies in Piltover, the other a burning, raging amber with the whites of his eyes turned black. Scars travelled down that side of his face, from above his brow down his chiseled cheekbones and trailing to his jaw.
Silco.
He wasn’t what you expected at all - some people described him as a grotesque and terrifying man, others called him a smooth-talking monster. He looked none of the sort, in fact, you found him quite attractive. He was older than you, that much was apparent, but his facial features looked as though he was sculpted by the gods. His scarring added to his look, made him look dangerous.
You like dangerous.
“That was a lovely performance,” he spoke, breaking the silence with his velvety tone, “I’ve never heard anyone quite like you before.” Silco took the bar seat next to you on your right, the scarred side of his face towards you.
“Thank you,” you smiled whilst taking a sip of your glass of wine, “If I had known you were listening, perhaps I would have tried a little harder.”
This earned a small chuckle from the man and he ordered a glass of whiskey. Despite the fact that the rest of the room had returned to their previous discussions, you could tell that some were watching, listening in to your conversation in curiosity. After all, it wasn’t often that the Kingpin spoke to a woman so openly.
“I wasn’t aware that your singing could get any more perfect than that,” he retaliated with a humorous undertone. You decided to humour him some more.
“Are you challenging me?” You whispered, “If so, I’d be glad to prove you wrong.” Now, you were trying your luck.
“It was a challenge, as well as a compliment. A voice like yours is hard to come by.”
“Are you going to shower me with compliments the whole evening, Mr. Silco?” You asked jokingly, blinking slowly while maintaining eye contact.
You watched him shift in his seat. A subtle movement, but it only proved to you that he wasn't accustomed to such public displays of flirtations.
“Hm,” he hummed, finishing his drink, “Only if you’d let me.”
Ah, things were heating up. You were playing a dangerous game.
“And if I would?” You pressed on the subject, looking over to Carmen and gesturing for refills of your drinks.
She walked towards you two with a smile, pouring your red wine and his whiskey. Only when she turned back did you catch a glimpse of her expression. She was looking at you with worry written all over her face, eyes flickering in concern and fear. You gave her a reassuring nod and returned to your conversation with Silco, still awaiting his response.
“Then I would have to come here more often,” he replied, the look in his eyes teasing.
The front doors swinging open interrupted the two of you as a well-built woman with a mechanical arm made her way through.
“Boss. There’s a problem at the wharf.” She seemed to be talking to Silco, who now looked irritated by the disruption.
“I’ll meet you outside shortly,” he said with a sigh. The woman looked at you, then back at Silco, a smirk forming on her face as she realized the scene she had walked into. When she had left the building, Silco turned back to face you.
“I’m afraid my compliments have been cut short. Shall I continue another day, miss…?” He took a pause, indicating for you to introduce yourself.
“(y/n),” you replied with a coy smile, “And yes, you may.”
“(y/n),” Silco repeated, looking somewhat proud of himself as he cocked his eyebrow. You relished the way your name sounded on his lips.
“I’ll see you some other time, (y/n).”
With a small wave, he disappeared into the night.

Report Card: Class of 1977
The Sex Pistols.
British rock historians opinions aside, I doubt the guys read a bunch of Guy Debord Situationist agitprop. More likely when he wasn’t hanging at Malcom and Vivian’s Sex store Steve Jones was busy stealing guitars from the Stones, among others.
So, how does the music stack up? The Pistols played Iike the bastard sons of Eddie Cochran, hard, tight, and badass. Lydon/Rotten provided extra attitude, not that they needed it. Their one record is extraordinary and belongs in your collection. I think Robert Mitchum would have enjoyed Matlock, Jones, and Cook’s playing. He woulda punched Lydon.
Blondie.
Smart, hip, and essential. Whether they were mining old Girl Group sounds, playing tight pop numbers like Look Good In Blue, or hipping the squares to rap, they were the among the coolest cats around. Tell the truth, Call Me made you look in your mirror before you went clubbing, didn’t it?
The Heartbreakers.
Like the Beatles never happened. The best dressed, coolest band around. The music? LAMF (like a mother fucker), when all their vices lined up on the same night the Heartbreakers played like the last gang in town. Baddest of the bad asses, like their compatriots in Blondie, the Heartbreakers were older and cooler than any of the “kids”. They’d have been Dion’s ideal backing band. If you could bottle attitude, the Heartbreakers were 150 Proof. Hell was briefly a member which is better for his cred than theirs.
Television.
Upon hearing the Television demo tapes, Ahmet Ertegun turned the band down saying “this is not earth music.” They coulda been contenders had they played more melodically instead of like a punkish Phish. The second album reveals the limitations of the plan and the rhythm section was, to be kind, inept. Hell was briefly a member which is better for his cred than theirs. Think of Talking Heads with shittier songs and lots of guitar solos.
Talking Heads.
A great band from jump, Talking Heads improved each year. RISD grads welcome a former Modern Lover to create a band that was unique among the leather jacket three chord crowd. Concise songwriting, memorable melodies, and a sense that while you could never be friends with any of them you could easily lie and say you prepped with their drummer. They sound better with each listen. Hell was never a member, a boost in cred for both parties.
Ramones.
The sonic equivalent of a White Castle burger consumed with a warm Pabst at a Russ Meyer film festival, Ramones sounded like a return to AM top 40 radio of the sixties was just around the corner. It wasn’t, but that didn’t bother Da Brudders. I listen to the first three records to this day.
Suicide.
Brit synth pop bands like Heaven 17, Human League, D’ran-D’ran and others owe their careers to Alan and Marty of Suicide. If that’s good or bad is your call, but even Springsteen appreciated the duo. The first two releases ( both called Suicide) are far more disturbing and intense than any British MTV oriented followers and are well worth your time. Springsteen’s State Trooper is his loving tribute to the duo’s sound.
The Cramps.
Buncha weirdos who played primal rockabilly like their lives depended on it. Attending Cramps concert in the 70’s allowed and encouraged more personal freedom than most people can handle. Stick with the earlier recordings while Lux and Ivy were still unearthing obscure early rock and roll songs to cover. I loved this band as much as I loved the Heartbreakers. Which is a lot.
Richard Hell and the Voidoids.
Hell was briefly a member of this band which helped his cred quite a bit. Hell’s herky-jerky songs are brought to life by a band that featured the playing of two extraordinary guitarists, Ivan Julian and Robert Quine. Worth your time and money.
The Clash.
There were a couple of years when you were tempted to believe all the righteous propaganda that emanated from Clash HQ. They really were an amazing band, at least until Topper Headon departed. London Calling is Exile on Main Street for the late 70’s and I guarantee you find worthy songs in the rambling Sandinista. I loved this band.

The singer Lonnie Donegan was born on April 29th 1931 in Bridgeton Glasgow.
Donegan was born Anthony James Donegan, the son of a Scottish father and Irish mother. His father was a professional violinist who had played with the Scottish National Orchestra.
He moved with his mother to London at an early age, after his parents divorced. Inspired by blues music and New Orleans jazz bands he heard on the radio, he resolved to learn the guitar, and bought his first at the age of fourteen. He took his first name after a New Orleans blues singer he admired called Lonnie Johnson.
The first band he ever played in was the trad jazz band led by Chris Barber, who approached him on a train asking him if he wanted to audition for his group. Barber had heard that Donegan was a good banjo player; in fact, Donegan had never played the banjo at this point, but he bought one and managed to bluff his way through the audition. His stint in this group was interrupted, however, when he was called up for National Service in 1949.
In 1952, he formed his first own group, the Tony Donegan Jazzband, which found some work around London. On one occasion they opened for the blues musician Lonnie Johnson at the Royal Festival Hall. Donegan was a big fan of Johnson, and took his first name as a tribute to him. The story goes that the host at the concert got the musicians' names confused, calling them "Tony Johnson" and "Lonnie Donegan", and Donegan was happy to keep the name.
Donegan recorded a reworking of an American folk tune, Rock Island Line. Decca released the song in 1956, billed by the Lonnie Donegan Skiffle Group. The record, with its talking sequences, homage to Americana, and fast train shuffle climax, became a major hit in Britain and America. Because he was paid a flat fee for the session, Donegan didn't receive any royalty payments for his most popular and influential song until the label struck a new deal for him 40 years later. However, Rock Island Line made him a star in his own right and would remain his signature song throughout his career.
From 1956 through 1962, he enjoyed a string of 34 British hits including Puttin' on the Style and Cumberland Gap, which hit number one in 1957, Don't You Rock Me Daddy-O, which reached number four in the same year, and the raucous sing-along My Old Man's a Dustman  which climbed to the top of the charts in 1960. It's not hard to see why Lonnie is regarded as the first real pop star, his fans included the likes of Lennon and McCartney, who's first group, The Quarrymen were a skiffle group. he Shadows, the Searchers, the Hollies, Herman's Hermits, Gerry & the Pacemakers, and Cliff Richard all began their musical lives doing skiffle.
As the swinging sixties rolled on Donegans hits dried up but he was always in demand for gigs at home and across the world, he also dabbled in a wee bit acting and his own song publishing business, his most popular song he bought the rights for being Nights in white Satin. In the 70's he popped upon the occasional TV shows during breaks from touring, in 1972 Tom Jones covered one of Lonnie's songs and it went top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic. As a performer he continued to record and lease unsuccessful sides to Pye, Decca, Black Lion, and RCA.
A 1976 heart attack forced Donegan into an uneasy semi-retirement in California. Two years later, Chrysalis Records organized an all-star recreation of his early hits Puttin' on the Style. Produced by former British teen idol Adam Faith and boasting duets with Ringo Starr, Elton John, and Rory Gallagher, it was his last major-selling album. Follow-ups with respected session ace Albert Lee and Cajun-fiddler Doug Kershaw seemed to point him towards country music, but a series of heart attacks in 1979 ended his full-time career.
In later years Donegan made a series of guest appearances with old friend Chris Barber including a featured spot on Van Morrison's Skiffle Sessions: Live in Belfast 1998. Just before his death, he returned to touring full time, exhibiting much of his classic verve and humour before standing-room-only crowds. Donegan died on November 3, 2002, in Peterborough.
Listening to Rock Island Line you can see why he was so popular in the States, adopting an American drawl in his tales and his singing.

Dave Molter Gives us some Blues to Groove with on (Really Nothin' New) Under the Sun
Artist: Dave Molter
New Release: (Really Nothin' New) Under the Sun
Genre: Rock; blues rock
Sounds like: I'm all over the place: Beatles, Joe Walsh, Delbert McClinton, Peter Gabriel
Located in: Pittsburgh, PA
One of my friends called this tune "swampy," and I have to agree. It's a medium blues groove that is familiar but with a bit of a surprise on the turnaround. Great slide guitar from Dave Flodine adds to the mood. The title gives you the subject matter: "(Really Nothin' New) Under the Sun." And haven't we all felt like that?
You wake up with energy and — before the day’s over you are confronted with the same old problems.
“Under the Sun” sounds different from the songs on my debut EP, "Foolish Heart." It's stripped-down -- just guitar, piano, bass, drums, no harmony on the lead vocals. By contrast, most of the songs on my EP have multiple overdubs and sound more "produced."
The difference in "Under the Sun" and many of the songs that will appear on my next EPs is that I changed studios and producers. Al Snyder is at the helm this time, and his approach -- with which I agree -- is that lyrics are paramount. The feel of the song is important, too, and likes to leave space in the production and instrumentation so that the listeners don't have to struggle to hear what's being sung. I think listeners will find that the approach works.
That doesn't mean we won't have songs with heavier production on the next EPs, but there will be a lot with minimal instrumentation.
It's no secret that The Beatles are my main influence, but I've been playing for more than 50 years.
Most of that time was spent in cover bands, and when you play Top 40, you become aware that there are a lot of valid styles out there. This tune is influenced by blues, but I still have songs in the pipeline that reflect the British music hall era, Sixties pop-rock, and a few more. As for the message in "Under the Sun," it's simple: Life’s work in progress. Don’t give up. Same problems? Keep on pushin’! I know that in my life, I've been tempted to give up. But I didn't; I just reinvented myself. Many times, actually!
Being that I have just switched producers and studios, we plan to have a new EP with 5 or 6 songs out before Christmas 2020.
Most will be new songs, but some will be ones we had in the can from my previous sessions with Buddy Hall.
In 2021, We’ll put out more EPs. I think EPs are the way to go, along with singles. No one seems in the mood to listen to a full CD anymore.
As for shows, with COVID-19 it's hard to tell what 2021 will bring.
We've talked about putting together a band with friends who also write and doing shows with tunes from each of us. I doubt a tour is possible these days. What we hope to do is have ticketed shows in small venues -- clubs or theaters -- that will allow us to observe social distancing rules (if they are still in effect). No matter what we do, the business will be different than what we envisioned a year ago.
About the Artist…
Dave Molter began his music career in 1965, one year after seeing The Beatles on "The Ed Sullivan Show." In the early days, Dave's bands had 45 RPM records out, but most of his career was spent in clubs or opening for big-name acts such as The Allman Brothers, Deep Purple, The Rascals, The Impressions, and many more. After a hiatus from performing, Dave released his debut EP, "Foolish Heart," in 2020.
Since its release, four of the five tunes on it have hit #1 on indie radio worldwide, and his sixth single, "Oh Woman, Don't You Cry," also hit #1. "He was a finalist in four categories for the 2020 Josie Awards and the 2020 International Singer-Songwriter Awards, and "Foolish Heart" or songs from it appeared on several "Best of 2019" year-end lists. His songs continue to be in rotation on indie radios around the world, including Africa, Australia, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Sweden, the U.K, the U.S., And many more.

TheSeaVoices Drawing Playlist
A mixture of drawing moods, themes and favourites, not necessarily relevant lyric-wise but all very carefully selected for zero frustration - maximum flow, and perhaps an element of sexiness?
If you want a 43 track playlist for drawing or painting to - this works :)
-
1- Wallowa Lake Monster, Sufjan Stevens
Fucking love the fucking lyrics! Beautiful story and atmosphere and voice. I hadn’t listened to Sufjan much before watching Call Me By Your Name and just caning Visions of Gideon for weeks after.
2- Experiment In Terror, Henry Mancini
From the 60’s noir thriller of the same name - so stylish and cool - what a soundtrack sir! I love the slow threat and slinkiness.
3- My Body, Perfume Genius
Similar slink here, dirty kind of glide. Have seen PG a couple of times live and just ABSORBED it into my soul - he dances up there like a beautiful table-dancer and the crowd is moving with him - always good albums to paint to.
4- Danke Schoen, Wayne Newton
Turn this way up! 21 year old Wayne blasts this out like a genius - his voice is amazing and so feminine. I know it from Ferris Bueller's Day Off originally where it is put to very good use.
5- My Little Brown Book, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane
I can listen to Duke Ellington all day every day, those brushy cymbals in this are so lazy cool. That’s the third sixties song so far.
6- One More Kiss Dear, Vangelis
Bladerunner, one of my favourite films.  WHAT A FUCKING SOUNDTRACK! This song was an accidental recording sung for the demo by Don Percival (not the intended singer) and the weird spooky vocal just worked for the mock vintage sound.
7- Verbarhemiopia, Ed Dowie
Released through Lost Map Records. I know these people and they always have great acts - I had a lot of exceptional experiences on the Inner Hebridean island of Eigg with them. This track is just a beautiful, pulsing moonbeam.
8- Just Like Honey, The Jesus and Mary Chain
Such a sleazy, druggy, sexy song - dirty guitar and sensual drums - the opening drum intro, borrowed from (another 60’s track), Be My Baby by The Ronettes coming up on this list at number 38.
9- Grid, Perfume Genius
I rec the video!
10- Here, Pavement
Oh Pavement - a big part of my identity! - Live, they are a fucking dream! This song is a regular ear worm.
11- Demon Host, Timber Timbre
Great lyrics, great album
12- Animal Friends, P-ano
The only song I’m into on this album, the atmosphere is great. A sad little song.
13- Sleepwalk, Santo and Johnny
1959 so lets call it 60’s again XD. A great instrumental - that slide, steel guitar sound is lush and the asmr trigger of my dreams
14- Hang Out The Stars In Indiana, Al Bowlly
MY FAVOURITE SONG OF ALL FUCKING TIME. I can and do listen to this on repeat all through a drawing even if it takes a day. Withnail & I introduced me - one of my favourite films. And, of course Bowlly is on The Shining too.
15- Wasted Teens, Monoganon
Lost Map records again, excellent and crazy live performance from these on Eigg.
16- The Alien, Ben Salisbury, Geoff Barrow
Such dark foreboding anticipation. From the Annihilation soundtrack - brilliant film and score. I love Portishead too.
17- Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries, Al Bowlly
Hey cheer up everyone - fuck it!
18- Wanna Sip, Fever Ray
I do! This is from their live recording at the Troxy - I WAS THERE —- oooooooooooof fuck WHAT A SHOW honestly!
19- Lipstick Stains, Jay Som
“I wanted to musically capture the immediate and intense but beautiful feeling of infatuation.” —— yep!
20- Heat Wave, Snail Mail
Yes! They are brilliant - saw them live at End Of The Road and the tent was CRAMMED!!!!!! The atmosphere was amazing - she is so young and so great.
21- I Love How You Love Me, The Paris Sisters
Hello 1960’s! The creamy Spector sound and that spoken word is amazing.
22- Shadow, Chromatics
Loved this on Twin Peaks The Return, it’s a gem and perfect for drawing/painting to.
23- Bankrobber, The Clash
I always sing ‘Daddy was a vampire’
24- Do Your Best, John Maus
Slo-mo beauty.
25- Canadian Girl, The Walkmen
Nice vintage-tinged weirdness and soul.
26- Wave of Mutilation (UK SURF) Pixies
I love Pixies, only seen them live once but it was very, very, very special. Beautiful, laid back b side version that I prefer to the album track.
27- Fell An Ox
There was a time where all I would listen to was King Creosote - it was an obsession! I have lost count of KC gigs I’ve been to.
28- Slow West, Django Django
Love the film, love the soundtrack, loved Django Django up till the last few releases. There is a live version of this on KEXP from four years ago which is the one I usually listen to. Fucking brilliant live - got to see them on Eigg one time too. I rec the Slow West film if you haven’t seen it.
29- Withnail’s Theme, Jack Hallam
Great film and soundtrack - a big favourite.
30- Portofino 1, Raymond Scott
60’s!  Ha - I hadn’t realised this at all till writing all this.
31- Lady Gaylord, Raymond Scott
From Manhattan Research Inc a collection of his advertising jingles and snippets from the 60’s
32- The Pink Room, Angelo Badalamenti
Filthiest song ever? From Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me
33- Goodnight Felicia, Chris Bear
From the score to excellent TV show, High Maintenance. I do love Grizzly Bear anyway and cried at their last gig I went to - I always cry at gigs though so….
34- Plainsong, The Cure
My teenage self was a massive Cure fan and I dedicated my record player, school books, wardrobe and bedroom to them! Saw them live only once (the LIGHTS!!!!) because I was too young, obsessed over Robert Smith a lot! This song and the whole album were a big favourite. Beautiful.
35- A Reluctant Hero/Betsy/End Credits Taxi Driver, Bernard Herrmann
I love Herrmann and I really love Taxi Driver. This is just…. ooof!
36- I Fall In Love Too Easily, Chet Baker
Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 1954- what a pretty little voice.
37- Looking Back I Should Have Been Home More, Richard Swift
Just lovely, so sad about Swift.
38- Be My Baby, The Ronettes
The best opening song use ever- MEAN STREETS - turn this RIGHT up please.
39- Go, Sparklehorse, Flaming Lips - Daniel Johnston cover
Doubly sad because of Sparklehorse and Daniel Johnston. I have seen The Flaming Lips many times throughout their career - from small gigs to radio telescope gigs! What a fucking show!
40- Every Night, Perfume Genius
Just nice stuff. Like I said - live he is so sensual- his moves are amazing.
41- Fireflies Made Out of Dust, Happy Jawbone Family Band
Great track. Love the lyrics.
42- Sleeping Lessons, The Shins
Richard Swift again, on keyboards. I really enjoy the historical references and atmosphere on this.
43- Smoke Rings, Les Paul, Mary Ford
1952 - ssssso ssssssspooooky

Secret love
Tumblr media
A/n- this is a one-shot written at 1:40 am because it popped into my head and I couldn’t sleep not writing it. As always request are open so hit that up. Listen to “secret love song part II”
Summary- (y/n) is a celebrity secretly dating bts member jungkook. You both have been together for two years and are in love but no one knows except the members and your families. Tonight you are performing at an award show debuting your new single for the first time. The song was written during a fight between the two of you and as you sing it you see your relationship flash through your eyes and jk feels the same way. (secret love song part II by little mix all excerpts of the song belong to them) Prompting the both of you to ask why aren’t you public.
Word count- 2.2k
Warnings- heartaches and not the good kind :(
The crowd roared as the presenters announced your name.
Now presenting award-winning singer/songwriter (y/n) (y/l/n) with her new single being sung live tonight for the first time!
A round of applause followed as the trap door opened and the platform you were on a rose. A soft piano ballad began accompanied by violins causing the crowd to go silent.
You waited for your queue to start as you spotted jungkook in the crowd sitting down at his table noticeably far from your own.
We keep behind closed doors, Every time I see you, I die a little more, Stolen moments that we steal as the curtain falls
Your voice soft and strong pierced through the venue. Your mind was taken back to the first time you met the person the song was written about
Two years earlier
“Hi I’m Jeon Jungkook!” a tall man greeted you with fluffy dark hair
“Hello, I’m (y/n)” you replied as your manager pushed you along “Sorry- I have to go but call me.” you handed the stranger your business card, enchanted by his smile but too busy to find out who the person behind it was.
Later that night, while you sat in the back of a black van your phone, went off
Jk- Hi this is jungkook from earlier tonight I was wondering If you’d like to get a coffee or smth?”
You smiled at your phone causing your manager to grab it reading the text message
“I’m sorry baby, it can’t happen. For neither of you actually, you both have a reputation to uphold might as well not hurt both of your feelings by starting something you shouldn’t.”
You took your phone back. “I won’t.”
(y/n)- sure but we need to meet somewhere private…
Now
That’s what you thought of first as you sang the first line to your song that was so blatantly written about him. You opened your eyes finishing the last word in the first line. Your eyes met him and began to water.
Jungkook was sitting towards the front of the celebrity section of the award show with all the members being they were nominated. He was surprised when he heard the melancholic piano at the beginning. It was so different than your other pieces. He listened carefully to the beginning one phrase sticking with him.
Stolen moments that we steal as the curtain falls
He could feel the pain in your voice and he knew what you meant, a memory going through his mind quickly before you spoke another word.
Five months earlier
“You’re so beautiful” he whispered in between each kiss he placed on your neck. “Did anyone see you come in here,” he asked
“No. I slipped right in.” you were against the frame of beams holding the stage up behind some curtains at no more than ten feet away from the stadium of sixty thousand people. So caught up in your secret kisses you both hadn’t heard the last call and the curtain opened. You were out of sight and pushed aside so he could go on stage and act like what was happening wasn’t. You sat there surrounded by wires on the floor you had fallen on in an attempt to hide. When you felt yourself feel the pain the interaction had caused you. Your heart broke into a million pieces. You were like a secret no one wanted to tell and that hurt. You laid there unable to move in the fear of someone seeing you sobbing for the better half of the show.
Jungkook didn’t remember that way. What went through his mind was the feeling of excitement he had felt being so close to showing everyone but showing no one.
It'll never be enough, As you drive me to my house, I can't stop these silent tears from rolling down, You and I both have to hide, On the outside where I can't be yours and you, Can't be mine.
Your eyes watered as you sang the second line out. All the times you had walked out of shops early or left your home an hour later to avoid being seen came into your mind like a dagger to the heart.
He listened to the pain in your voice and looked at the table as his eyes began to water. “What does she mean silent tears?” he asked himself in a whisper recalling all the times he had heard you cry but hadn’t said anything
You closed your eyes so you wouldn’t see him, afraid if you did you wouldn’t be able to sing.
But I know this, We got a love that is homeless
It seemed as if you sang the words and told them to him and yourself at that moment. When you wrote them you had been in a state of heartbreak and couldn’t deal with what you were writing but now it seems...clear.
As the beat grew you poured all your emotion into the chorus wanting to feel it and let the crowd feel it as well.
Why can't I hold you in the street? Why can't I kiss you on the dance floor? I wish that it could be like that. Why can't it be like that? 'Cause I'm yours.
You opened your eyes and found his in the crowd
Why can't I say that I'm in love? I wanna shout it from the rooftops I wish that it could be like that Why can't it be like that? 'Cause I'm yours
At this point, tears were streaming down your face shamelessly. You weren’t singing to the crowd anymore. You were pleading to your case. It was hard, It was more than hard to be with him it was impossible.
He felt ashamed sitting there with his girlfriend singing a song about how she didn’t feel loved. It hurt him because he always knew and never said anything. He could feel the sympathetic eyes of his fellow members on him as he watched you sing with all the pain you harboured. What could he have done? He began to remember your fights.
A month earlier
“Kookie when are you gonna be able to get here” you cried into the phone laying on your bed
“I don’t know babe” he answered “I don’t think I can come today, I don’t want anyone suspecting anything,” he admitted
“Why? Am I a secret that needs to be kept at all cost?” you started to feel a pain in your chest again. One you wouldn’t admit you had.
“No. This isn’t new (y/N). We’ve always done it like this. Why are you being pissy?” he asked
That’s all he remembered, a small fight.
For you, it was different. That night you cried. Not in a normal middle of the week breakdown manner, but in a sob that consumed your body causing you to heave and stop breathing. You sobbed all night and began thinking about your relationship. Soon you were jotting lyrics.
“Hi, can I talk to Susan please.” your voice was hoarse as you asked your manager's secretary for her. “Hi-” you coughed attempting to make your voice sound normal and not like you had spent the last four hours crying “I have the debut single-”
Now
It's obvious you're meant for me, Every piece of you, it just fits perfectly. Every second, every thought, I'm in so deep, But I'll never show it on my face. But we know this, we got a love that is homeless
A sad smile crept onto your face as you sang the bridge. You thought of all the good times rather than the bad. But still, it seemed as though you saw them in a blue filter tainted by reality. You saw all your favourite memories pass through. You closed your eyes and imagined them as if they were happening now. Giggles filled your mind remembering days when you both laughed in bed joking and teasing. Then memories of the two of you watching movies on your or his couch. You remembered the look in his eyes when he first told you he loved you while you were in his arms, but you were in the dressing room of a shop hiding from the press. This fact brought you back to the reality that was your broken heart.
“Man you fucked up. What did you do to break her heart so bad” Jimin whispered into Jungkook’s ear
He was looking up at the stage watching you close your eyes wondering what you were thinking. He was wishing he could run on stage and hold you in his arms and tell you he was sorry and he wanted everyone to know that. But there he sat speechless and unable to think of an answer to his question.
“What I didn’t I do?” he said as his eyes began to water
“Stop you can’t cry. She’s been looking at you and if you cry now everyone will know.” Jimin whisper shouted into his ear
“Shut up.”  he swatted him away wanting only to hear you
You sang the chorus with your eyes open and shamelessly motioning and looking at him. Your makeup wasn’t running but there was a shine on your face from where the tears had trailed.
I don't wanna live love this way. I don't wanna hide us away. I wonder if it ever will change. I'm living for that day. Someday when you hold me in the street and you kiss me on the dance floor I wish that we could be like that
You sang the last pre-chorus and thought about what you wanted. You thought about the last two years of your life and regretted nothing. You loved him with everything in you but you couldn’t live like this anymore. Something had to change. You finished the song and thanked everyone for telling them to buy your upcoming album. You looked at the cheering crowd as they stood up to give you a standing ovation. Some of them were tearing up struck by the emotion in your voice. You looked out at your peers and fans and felt like you had done well by yourself.
You walked off stage and into the dressing room where you sat down looking at yourself in the mirror. Your hand stroked your cheek as you wiped away the tear marks left on it.
“What are you going to do? (Y/n) is it worth it? Do you want this? Is this who you are? Someone who sings on stage to the man they love who doesn’t love them back? Yes. But we are also the strong woman who won’t run away but figure this out because we love that person no matter what and that means working for it.” you looked in the mirror vocalizing your thoughts a second time that night.
A knock on the door followed by it swinging open caused you to go into a panic.
“Who is that!” you screamed but your question was answered when you saw your boyfriend pressed up against the closed door tears in his eyes.
You both looked at each other, shocked at the scene that was being played out.
“I-” his voice broke “I’m so sorry.” he buried his face into his hands and sobbed “I love you so much baby, it’s not fair for me to say that now but I love you and I’m sorry I haven’t told anyone when I should’ve had a billboard saying how lucky I was…” You rushed over to him wrapping your arms around his shoulders even though he had a good seven inches on your small frame and your giant dress.
“Was?” you chuckled while sobbing with him. Before you knew it, you were both on the ground sobbing.
“So what do we do now?” you asked looking into his soft brown eyes that were swollen from crying.
“I just want you to feel happy and loved and not like a secret I’m keeping,” he said
“I don’t know how to tell everyone?” you stated
“I have an idea. Hear me out what if I were to sit next to you and kiss you when the award is announced.” he proposed the idea
“That wouldn’t work the award is in ten minutes.” you sighed, “I think it would be enough if we could just keep it private but not a secret.”
“We could hold hands in public and live together finally as you wanted and I could talk about you in interviews, we could be in the open.”
“That’s all I wanted.”
Though things were far from being normal you felt happy that you were walking one step in the right direction.
A/N- I’m gonna be doing two post a week so look up to that, I’m going away for a month or two so I’ll try to have enough pieces on queue so this account runs normally but if post stop I wan’t able too but I’ll be back in a little I promise. I SWEAR IF NO ONE REQUEST ANYTHING IM GONNA KMS but asks are open have a nice day. Why do I always put these on queue at 1 am?

(Readings for the feria (Friday))
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Friday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading
1 Timothy 1:1-2,12-14
I used to be a blasphemer, but the mercy of God was shown me
From Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the command of God our saviour and of Christ Jesus our hope, to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith; wishing you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.
I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, and who judged me faithful enough to call me into his service even though I used to be a blasphemer and did all I could to injure and discredit the faith. Mercy, however, was shown me, because until I became a believer I had been acting in ignorance; and the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 15(16):1-2,5,7-8,11
R/ You are my inheritance, O Lord.
Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you.
I say to the Lord: ‘You are my God.’
O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup;
it is you yourself who are my prize.
R/ You are my inheritance, O Lord.
I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel,
who even at night directs my heart.
I keep the Lord ever in my sight:
since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm.
R/ You are my inheritance, O Lord.
You will show me the path of life,
the fullness of joy in your presence,
at your right hand happiness for ever.
R/ You are my inheritance, O Lord.

Alleluia!
Or:
John 17:17
Alleluia, alleluia!
Your word is truth, O Lord:
consecrate us in the truth.
Alleluia!
Gospel
Luke 6:39-42
Can the blind lead the blind?
Jesus told a parable to the disciples: ‘Can one blind man guide another? Surely both will fall into a pit? The disciple is not superior to his teacher; the fully trained disciple will always be like his teacher. Why do you observe the splinter in your brother’s eye and never notice the plank in your own? How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,” when you cannot see the plank in your own? Hypocrite! Take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye.’
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Saint John Chrysostom, Bishop, Doctor
(Liturgical Colour: White)
(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Friday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading
Ephesians 4:1-7,11-13
We are all to come to unity, fully mature in the knowledge of the Son of God
I, the prisoner in the Lord, implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together. There is one Body, one Spirit, just as you were all called into one and the same hope when you were called. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God who is Father of all, over all, through all and within all.
Each one of us, however, has been given his own share of grace, given as Christ allotted it. To some, his gift was that they should be apostles; to some, prophets; to some, evangelists; to some, pastors and teachers; so that the saints together make a unity in the work of service, building up the body of Christ. In this way we are all to come to unity in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God, until we become the perfect Man, fully mature with the fullness of Christ himself.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 39(40):2,4,7-11
R/ Here I am, Lord! I come to do your will.
I waited, I waited for the Lord
and he stooped down to me;
he heard my cry.
R/ Here I am, Lord! I come to do your will.
He put a new song into my mouth,
praise of our God.
Many shall see and fear
and shall trust in the Lord.
R/ Here I am, Lord! I come to do your will.
You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings,
but an open ear.
You do not ask for holocaust and victim.
Instead, here am I.

Mark 4:1-10,13-20
The parable of the sower
Jesus began to teach by the lakeside, but such a huge crowd gathered round him that he got into a boat on the lake and sat there. The people were all along the shore, at the water’s edge. He taught them many things in parables, and in the course of his teaching he said to them, ‘Listen! Imagine a sower going out to sow. Now it happened that, as he sowed, some of the seed fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some seed fell on rocky ground where it found little soil and sprang up straightaway, because there was no depth of earth; and when the sun came up it was scorched and, not having any roots, it withered away. Some seed fell into thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it produced no crop. And some seeds fell into rich soil and, growing tall and strong, produced crop; and yielded thirty, sixty, even a hundredfold.’ And he said, ‘Listen, anyone who has ears to hear!’
When he was alone, the Twelve, together with the others who formed his company, asked what the parables meant.
He said to them, ‘Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of the parables? What the sower is sowing is the word. Those on the edge of the path where the word is sown are people who have no sooner heard it than Satan comes and carries away the word that was sown in them. Similarly, those who receive the seed on patches of rock are people who, when first they hear the word, welcome it at once with joy. But they have no root in them, they do not last; should some trial come, or some persecution on account of the word, they fall away at once. Then there are others who receive the seed in thorns. These have heard the word, but the worries of this world, the lure of riches and all the other passions come in to choke the word, and so it produces nothing. And there are those who have received the seed in rich soil: they hear the word and accept it and yield a harvest, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.’
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Silly, do all the questions you definitely deleted. All of them.

Pop music of the 90s was fun. A number of period items aside - it is a long time since Spirit , Frank Zappa, Johnny Winter , Joe Cocker or Nation Joe and the Fish featured in a generalist best albums list - it set a template for the pop canon that has remained largely untouched for more than 40 years, by adhering to sure rules. Whereas all three movements loved completely different degrees of mainstream acceptance, a fourth, much less-recognized model was beginning to take shape. Spotlighting atonal noise and unconventional rock instruments reminiscent of drum machines, groups similar to Pere Ubu turned the pioneers of business rock, an abrasive subgenre that did not get pleasure from widespread popularity however impressed future rock bands. Many of the music created after Rome fell was commissioned by the church. The Catholic faith has an extended history of involvement (for better or worse) with the musical arts. In 600 CE Pope Gregory had the Schola Cantarum built. This was the primary music school in Europe. Ben Folds and company introduced the issue of abortion to the pop charts—from a male standpoint. A particularly fascinating twist is that it appears the male narrator of this melancholy song is egocentric and a bit of a jerk. Lyrically, this is among the most unusual hit songs of the '90s.
Originally from the Dominican Republic , bachata is without doubt one of the most popular Latin music genres right this moment. Though the making of Bachata music began again within the 1960s with the songs produced by Jose Manuel Calderon, this rhythm was not in a position to compete with the recognition that Merengue used to have. Its bonding mechanism can, North argues, ‘be helpful to susceptible youngsters', no matter any anti-social message it could proclaim. In writing about many of the greatest pop information since January, I started to notice similarities across the board that weren't as pronounced in years previous — sounds were shared by artists who did not work in the same sphere and even the identical nation. This is different from producers having a signature sound, like the standing four-counts and zany key adjustments of a Pharrell vehicle or the drowsy, gauzy synths and samples favored by Drake's right-hand man Noah forty" Shebib. It seems like a conscious consolidation of the sonics of pop music, from several totally different palms, producers whose work, it ought to be famous, has escaped easy classification in the past. Memphis blues is a sort of blues music that was pioneering within the early part of the 20th century by musicians like Sleepy John Estes and Willie Nix, related to vaudeville and drugs shows. It was within the Memphis blues that groups of musicians first assigned one guitarist to play rhythm, and one to play lead and solos - this has turn into commonplace in rock and roll and far of popular music. As well as, the jug band arose from the Memphis blues, mixing the sound with jazz and using home made, easy instruments.
