A recommendation to all the audio drama creators out there:
Always listen to your show in the way your audience is listening to your show.
We tend to edit using nice gear. Good over-the-ear headphones. Quiet rooms. But most of your audience will not listen to your show this way. A recent poll indicated that almost 20% of AD listeners listen with a *single* earbud in. Almost 10% listen on their phone speaker. That's a significant part of your audience that is listening in a mono environment or with tiny speakers (or both). You also likely have listeners with hearing loss in one of their ears*, and you want your show to be accessible to them. Before you release your show, make sure to listen to it at least once on a single earbud in a noisy environment. Is your show still legible this way? Can a listener still enjoy it like this, and understand all the plot beats and character moments? If not, it's a good idea to spend some more time on your edit so that they can. (And it's still definitely OK to make your show sound *great* for those who have a great audio setup! Just make sure the show still works for those who don't.) *You likely also have audience members with hearing loss in *both* ears. Transcripts are important. I'm behind in getting them posted for Metropolis, I need to get on that. (Episode 3 of Metropolis is live, BTW. Just waiting for Spotify to pick up the RSS feed before the big announcement. 😅)

How was it that in a podcast with some of the grossest sound effects I've ever had the pleasure of listening to, the sound of kissing was where you and Johnny drew the line? It's just funny to me xD
Because kissing is gross. Well I mean, all human processes are gross but kissing... blerg. Jokes aside, it's hard to explain. I guess it is worse hearing something that is meant to sound nice and isn't than something that was meant to sound bad from the start. Certainly enough listeners agreed that I think I am onto something here, not sure yet.

CASTING CALL - The Notional Supernatural
A new audio-drama is in the works, and we're looking to assemble our weird little team! We're looking for creative of all kinds to help bring this supernatural podcast to life:
🖊️ Writers - Got a knack for eerie, atmospheric storytelling with a touch of dark humour? This is the place for you. 🎤 Voice Actors - From deadpan skeptics to haunted teens to unknowable horrors, we need voices of all kinds. 🎨 Artists - Illustrators, cover designers, promo wizards, help us make the strange look stunning. 🎧 Sound Editors / Designers - If you can turn a whisper into a chill down the spine, we need your ears. This is a passion project with long-term potential, and we’re looking to build a collaborative space for folks who love strange stories, creepy vibes, and a slow-burn mystery.
📍 Remote / Worldwide, however we are UK based so timezones will centre around that 📩 Feel free to ask us anything on this blog, or jump right in and join us on discord, it would be an absolute pleasure to have you! Plot Information
Edgar “Eddie” Pritchard never set out with the intention of becoming the voice of the supernatural in his fog-choked town, but when you drop out of university with only a half-finished degree in English Literature and Folklore and a chip on your shoulder, you take what you can get.
Eddie now hosts the low-fi podcast The Notional Supernatural, dedicated to the bizarre, unexplained incidents that plague his hometown. Haunted radios, phantom dogs, disappearing roads, flickering doppelgängers; everyone else explains it away as a bad dream or hangovers, some of it becoming urban legends, however Eddie suspects something else may be at play.
Each episode features submissions from listeners, with Eddie conducting awkward, but often chilling, interviews, and on the odd occasion venturing into the field himself – with no more than a recorder, a flashlight, and a growing awareness that he's way in over his head. The deeper he goes, the more he notices patterns, threads that indicate something much larger, going back decades, maybe even centuries.
But Eddie is not just documenting these occurrences. They're beginning to follow him. And the question is: is he just an observer? Or is he becoming a part of the phenomenon himself?

Please stop filming BL scenes next to moving water. Please. I am begging you. The mics just aren't working for you. Move away from the fountain and the waterfall! I promise, the scene will be just as good somewhere else.

SOUND EDITING SERVICES
Strictly sound editing I do not have video editing software.
I refuse to work on AI Art or AI voice over.
AI Art is ugly and unprofessional
AI Art is Theft and Plagiarism
Before working with me clients must sign an agreement stating that their project was made entirely by themselves and without any help from AI.
Any attempt to push AI will lead to me dropping the project without refunding my services.
Projects (Fixed Rate)
10-dollars per project.
I’m still new to this. I am not taking any project longer than ONE-OR-TWO MINUTES.
Sound Editing
Type of Projects I’m looking for
Short films (2 minutes max)
Voice Over/Fandubs (1 minute max)
Demo Reels (1 minute long max)
Trailers (2 minutes max)
Ads or Radio Spots (1 minute Max)
Tik Tok or Instagram Reels (1 minute max)
I would like to reiterate that I only have experience with ProTools. I understand only how to add or edit music and sound effects and that I cannot edit your videos for you.
Ignoring these stipulations will lead me to dropping the project without refunding my services.
All money transaction must be handled through Zelle.
ANON ASK me for more details or if you have any questions.
This is sample work I did for @kennyroundpants1489

Sound Editor positions open!!
"Oh no!", I hear you say? "I really wanna be involved but I have no experience with sound editing even though it sounds super cool!"
Well first let me reassure you, yes. Yes it is super cool.
And secondly let me say that you're in luck! Because Echoes of the Eldritch is the perfect project for a beginner. As long as you have access to a laptop or a computer you can learn to edit! And it's very easy to pick up (if every white guy named Brent can learn to edit his podcast of him talking to his best buds about movies, so can you!)
And our editors will be there to guide you along every step of the way! Each episode's editing will be split it in multiple smaller tasks, which is ideal if you just want to dip your toe in for now!
And if you do have experience we would obviously also be delighted to have you!
Echoes of the Eldritch is a Magnus Archives fan podcast that takes place in one of the worlds that the fears got sent to. It follows a new archival crew in a whole new archive. And you have a chance to enrich that world, with crispy pacing, spooky sounds and haunting music!
On board yet?
Join our discord to find out more, or ask us questions, in the server or right here on our blog! We would love to see you there!
Statement Ends

One thing for the audio drama creators out there:
Remember that your characters exist in space. If you want them to feel human (if they are human), remember that they have *bodies*, not just voices. Bodies that move, sit, are probably in clothes (maybe), and generally make all sorts of noise beyond what's coming out of their mouth.
If you want them to feel alive, make sure to present them doing things and moving around in each scene. You'll be amazed at how far that goes in connecting them to your audience (and in making your show immersive).
(Saying this as someone who ends up doing just as much sound design for a scene that's a conversation as one with robots crashing into each other.)

WBN, sound design, and the flaming tuba
Yesterday I finally watched this 50-minute video about the sound design and editing of Werewolf By Night. Since I know next to nothing about sound design and this is mostly an interview with Michael Giacchino and some of the post-production team via Zoom, I wasn't sure if it would be entertaining. It is, largely because Giacchino and the other four professionals have such good rapport. They enjoy working together.
The video below will start at at the 44-minute mark when the host brings up the end of the special. The whole thing was a very late addition. Until the last few days of shooting they had nothing scripted for it. The special just sort of ended. They knew they needed more and eventually came up with what we saw after some suggestions from Gael. It's worth watching the last 10 minutes just for that, the behind the scenes info, and what Ted actually says to Jack that makes him laugh. 😂
The segment before that one is about how the flaming tuba guy, who's actually one of the long-time producers of The Simpsons and Giacchino's BFF, happened.
WBN was a labor of love and collaboration. They made up a lot of it as they went along!
