3 bands/musicians mentioned in this new Netflix description for Stranger Things.
The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go
Iconic. Played a huge role in s1-2 and will likely make a return in the final season.
Kate Bush - Running Up that Hill (A Deal With God)
Legendary. Played a huge role in s4 and is arguably one of the few tracks to be in the same league as Should I Stay or Should I Go (which is really saying something).
Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
Umm. Played once in the series, during the snowball. Never again since. Out of ALL the artists they could've picked to mention from the Stranger Things soundtrack (Metallica, Journey? TOTO? THE POLICE??? EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE WAS LITERALLY USED IN S2 AND S4??), and yet they chose an artist, whose only had one song play on the show, all the way back in s2?

My friend just moved to a her grandmas old place and she doesn't have internet, so instead we dug out Grandma's trusty VHS collection and watched a bunch of movies from the cusp of Y2K. We also have plans to dig out more because this is our thing now, fuck Netflix. So here's my reviews so far:
Holes. what a GREAT fucking movie. Good message that is blatantly anti-prison industrial complex and anti-capitalist. good morals, good soundtrack, great casting, the author of the text wrote the screenplay so it hits hard like the book does, the romance between Kate and Sam will be goals to me forever. "I can fix that"!?!? KILL ME JFJDJWKWKFNJRNE 11/10 good shit. youuUuUUUU got to goOooOoo dig those hooooles 🎶
Another one that's still good? POTC: curse of the black pearl. Yes it's Johnny Depp Disney Garbage Trash, but it's WRITTEN SO WELL. Whatever writers they got for that shit obviously have written many a fanfic (positive! praise!!) bc the dynamics and dialogue btwn characters flow so smoothly. It's absolutely and utterly unlike real life, it's just the pirate story we all always wished we could be in, and it's still an absolute blast. for that I award it 9/10. This one was funny bc it came out on VHS in time for the commercials to be advertising DVDs.
Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius? This one's hard, cus this was one of my FAVORITE movies growing up. I noticed going in, however, that I remembered far less about what happens to Jimmy and his friends then I did about Caveman. Basically all I remembered was Jimmy's dad is stupid, and "when I sneeze it looks like a advanced species too." and that's bc Jimmy Neutron is a completely vapid and inane tale with absolutely no message, that unfortunately did not stand the test of time to me personally. It's pretty much unremarkable. they try to mix the "he's a genius baby" humor with 5th grader booger jokes and it just doesn't work, the booger humor doesn't land for adults and the genius humor isn't quite smart enough to be actually funny most of the time. Tbqh I think watching this as an adult gives me more ideas for horror movies than anything else. They go into space ON ROLLER COASTERS, WITHOUT HELMETS!!! They're fighting an entire civilization of space traveling ritual sacrificing EGGS and they have A SINGULAR! ONE! CHILD! ARMY! TO FIGHT THEM!!!! THEY CANT BREATHE OUT THERE! that's too scary I can't take it seriously lmao. 4/10 with all positive points going to Jimmy's hot mom and himbo dad (ideal romance tbh and where 90% of the humor comes from), Carl, Sheen, and Cindy, for screaming "THOSE FINDINGS WERE INCONCLUSIVE AND YOU KNOW IT" during their first on screen fight, that joke did actually land so they can have a cookie for it. And the teacher who gets turned small and gets left that way forever. What the fuck lmao
We also watched Pocahontas and I mean. Even as a kid watching that one was more of a lesson in "here's how NOT to talk about history," and as an adult, her "romance" with John Smith is more weak and pathetic than anything I've ever seen before or since! We got to "Savages" and all I could think was "Disneys orchestra really put their whole pussy into this one, huh?!?" I wish I could say the rest of the movie/soundtrack made it worthwhile but I'm gonna go with a solid 2/10 here. we still had a fun time tearing into their choices, and the aesthetic of an old Disney movie watched on VHS like nature intended is a form of ASMR. I didn't realize how much I missed the clackety clack of the plastic cases or the smell of a warm, freshly rewound tape. <3 good shit.
Stay tuned for more of my 20 Years Later: VHS Reviews No One Fucking Asked For! we're holding out hope that her parents still have my friends own VHS collection bc her and her sister used to have a banging VHS collection and I NEED to see Quest for Camelot.

Philomena Cunk, the host of Netflix and BBC Two’s Cunk on Earth, a mockumentary series about the history of human civilization, asks the stupidest questions. Half historical tour guide and half field reporter, the character, played by comedian Diane Morgan, trains her glassy gaze upon real academics who’ve dedicated their lives to scholarship and poses queries like, “How did Egyptians build the pyramids? Did they start at the top and work down?” and “Were numbers worth less back in ancient times?” These experts, many of whom are in on the bit, play along by answering her questions as sincerely as they can. In episode five, Ashley Jackson, a professor of imperial and military history at London’s King’s College, gives in quickly after Cunk accuses him of “mansplaining” the distinction between the Soviet Union and what she calls the “Soviet Onion.” “If you want to talk about Russian Soviet vegetables, we can,” he says.
But Charlie Brooker, the show’s creator — best known in the United States for creating the anthology series Black Mirror — knows Cunk on Earth can’t sustain itself on dopey interview questions alone (Morgan’s Cunk character originated on Brooker’s mid-2010s BBC Two series, Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe), so the show etches out different ways to maintain its profound commitment to stupidity. Cunk’s narration is packed with factual inaccuracies, anecdotes about eccentric characters from her personal life, and daffy non sequiturs. “What’s ironic about Jesus Christ becoming a carpenter was he was actually named after the two words you’re most likely to shout after hitting your thumb with a hammer,” she says in episode two. For no apparent reason, the show’s go-to benchmark for the measurement of time is the 1989 Technotronic song “Pump Up the Jam.” Each reference to the “unrelated Belgian techno anthem” is accompanied by nearly 40 seconds of the song’s extremely ’80s music video and a chyron displaying jokes about the song like, “‘Pump Up the Jam’ is an anagram of ‘Jam Up the Pump.’” There is a commercial for a hotel resort played completely straight, a solo reenactment of a medieval feast turned mêlée soundtracked by expert sound design, a Black Mirror–inspired bit about traumatizing an artificially intelligent Beethoven by re-creating his sentience within a smart speaker, and more.
Sometimes, the way Cunk on Earth subverts this formula is by being deceptively smart. The phrasing of an ostensibly silly question will illuminate something insightful about human behavior, or Cunk will travel so far down the path of apparent stupidity that she loops back around to intelligence. When she asks Joyce Tyldesley (professor of Egyptology at the University of Manchester) in episode one about whether the shape of Egypt’s pyramids was designed to prevent “homeless people from sleeping on them,” for example, the answer seems obvious. But just by asking the question, she makes an implicit point about how accepted anti-homeless architectural design is today by comparison. In a similar move, when Cunk asks University of London’s professor of history Kate Cooper in episode two if she could call Jesus Christ “the first celebrity victim of cancel culture,” she cuts off Cooper’s reply. “Sorry, that wasn’t a question,” she clarifies. “I’m literally asking if you could call him the first celebrity victim of cancel culture for our show.” To go viral, her show needs to reduce hot-button issues to zippy sound bites, after all.
In the show’s first episode, during a conversation with Douglas Hedley (professor of the philosophy of religion at the University of Cambridge), Cunk posits, to his dismay, that the human brain is full of pipes. “You know how philosophers have these thoughts, and they try and push these thoughts through these pipes?” she asks a weary-looking Hedley. “When you’re having a big idea, is it best to break it up into lots of little thoughts, about the size of peas, and squeeze them through in quick succession, or just bite the bullet and force it through your mind pipe in one huge clod, like gritting your teeth and thinking for dear life?” Hedley’s expression softens as the question progresses. “That’s a very interesting way of describing two general tendencies in philosophy,” he replies. “The more analytical style, which means cutting problems up into bite-size portions, and the other, a more synthetic approach, which takes on a larger perspective. Your characterization is, in fact, a rather intriguing delineation of two major strands in current philosophy.” All of that from an unacknowledged poop joke.
That scene is reminiscent of a classic clip from Sacha Baron Cohen’s Da Ali G Show when Ali G shocks a group of animal-rights activists he’s otherwise antagonized with a sneakily thoughtful question. “What happens if they say, ‘Here’s a chicken. You eat this, or we kill another chicken’?” he lobs at them. “You’ve just asked a question that was the hardest question that the toughest moral philosopher, when I did philosophy at university, asked us,” answers one activist, a big smile pasted on his face. Watching experts react like this to Ali and Cunk feels like seeing someone coincidentally check the time on a stopped clock at one of the only two times it happened to be correct that day. But none of this is the product of happenstance. Being stupid is easy, but committing to a comedic brand of stupidity that revels in and explores stupidity in all its forms like Cunk on Earth is a much taller order. It requires a command over the brain-breaking, the groan-inducing, the squint-causing, and an understanding of how to reconcile all of these elements into an end product that justifies the effort. Cunk on Earth is like a symphony of stupidity, and at its helm is its virtuosic maestro of the form, Morgan’s Cunk.
In episode three of Cunk on Earth, Cunk sits across from Dr. Shirley J. Thompson, a composer and professor of music at the University of Westminster, to interview her about classical music. “Beethoven wrote that song that goes ‘Dum-dum-dum-dum. Dum-dum-dum-dum,’” she says, humming the composer’s “Symphony No. 5.” “What do those lyrics mean? … It’s just the word ‘dumb’ over and over again. Is it a dig at his audience?” Cunk on Earth doesn’t play the same dumb note over and over again. Unlike Beethoven, it has some respect for its audience.

How I would overhaul That 90s Show, via my verse. Downstairs People (or The Kids are Alright, I haven't decided).
The Premise: 1998/99. Away from the city lights, it's either summer camp or spending a couple of weeks at their grandparents' abode for the Forman and Hyde kids. With lots of adventure, and lots of shenanigans. Just like the good 'ol days.
Here, there are really no clear parallels to the OG gang, other than Chelsea being an artsier Donna and Kate having main character syndrome like Eric. They're tweens (like they should be), figuring out themselves, with no filter. No Disney-esque facade, no superficial diversity. It's a deep dive, into what makes kids tick, as they interact with the world around them. Much like season 1 of That 70s Show, whereas Netflix's That 90s Show? Reeks of The Conners (so. much. retconning, to the point of it being an obvious AU), and Girl Meets World. A dumpster fire mixed with outright mediocrity.
Main:
Kate Forman: Eric and Donna's 12/13 year old daughter, and the central character of the series. In Chicago, she's the endearing popular girl with straight As. As a budding activist, and with a bohemian flair. Can she reinvent herself in Point Place, and can she ever relax and just be a typical kid, with typical adventures?
Becca Hyde: Jackie and Hyde's 12/13 year old daughter, who's struggling to come to grips with her budding bisexuality. She has a crush both on Leonardo DiCaprio and Lindsay Lohan. Her on-off boyfriend Danny, and her best friend Kate. And meeting Mel brings it all to light, slowly but surely.
Adrian Forman: Fez and Laurie's 13/14/15 year old son. Abandoned by his mother at a very young age, he has little to nothing in common with his flamboyant, bisexual father. He spends his summer with his grandparents every summer, because he identifies so much more with them. Red in particular. But as he goes through growing pains, and lovingly eyes the girl next door, he'll have to confront the fact that maybe, just maybe? He isn't as much like his grandfather as he thinks, as the generational divide becomes more and more apparent.
Chelsea O'Connor: The girl next door, and the granddaughter of Red's childhood best friend Arch. Quiet but rebellious, she's an artistic soul with a love of music. Her parents, Edie (Arch's daughter) and Elliot, are local music teachers with nightly "concerts" that drive Red crazy. Her parents might be...eccentric, but at least they helped bring Red and Arch back together again, after decades apart.
James Hyde: Jackie and Hyde's 10/11 year old son, and the "little brother" figure for Adrian. Well, and he's Becca's literal little brother, and he drives her insane. With his wild schemes, and entrepreneurial dreams.
Leah Forman: Eric and Donna's 8/9 year old daughter, who loves stirring the pot. Green Day is her soundtrack, and she's having the time of her life. With her best friend James by her side, and not those snotty girls at stupid camp.
*****
Recurring:
Kevin and Daniel "Danny" Acosta: Buddy Morgan's stepsons, and Leo's great-grandsons. They spend their weekends with their mother (and Leo's granddaughter) Maura. Kevin is Adrian's best friend, a STEM nerd to the max. And Danny is a reckless, rebellious skater boy, and Becca's on-off boyfriend. Who Hyde hates.
Melanie "Mel" Parker: Raquel's daughter, Colette's niece, and Becca's secret girlfriend. She drags a socially awkward Becca to many local hangouts, from Mt Hump to Grooves.
Arthur "Arch" Holland: Chelsea's grandfather, Edie's father, and Red's childhood best friend. Oh, and current best friend.
Eric: Aw, Dad has a best friend!
Red: Wipe that damn smirk off of your face!
They fell out after fighting over a girl in high school, and they firmly went their separate ways. With Red going the more conventional route, and with Arch floating around for awhile before starting a construction company. Ever since '80, when the O'Connors moved next door, they've been reconstructing their friendship. Step by step.
Hannah Kelso: Kelso and Brooke's 13/14 year old daughter. She loves the Backstreet Boys, all things Disney, and animals (including stuffed animals). In 1998, she chooses summer camp ("it was my last chance, to be a kid!"), and in 1999? She chooses to hang out with her boyfriend Tommy in Chicago, but Fez and Kelso still try to set her up with Adrian, with bad results.
Hannah: But Daddy, I have a boyfriend!
Kelso: C'mon, you guys would be like Red and Kitty!
Hannah: And Adrian has a girlfriend!
Fez (with a gasp): I didn't know that!
Kelso (patting Fez's shoulder): Now you do.
Hannah (loudly clearing her throat): That means you can stop trying to set us up...
Kelso (with a crazy laugh): Yeah, right...
Fez (interjecting): Rome wasn't built in a day.

MONDO INVITES YOU TO PEEL BACK THE LAYERS OF THE GLASS ONION SOUNDTRACK ON VINYL
Austin, TX – December 12, 2022 – Mondo, in partnership with Netflix and Cut Narrative Records, is incredibly excited to present the vinyl release of Nathan Johnson's brilliant score to the latest Benoit Blanc mystery GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY, debuting on Netflix on December 23.
Audiences who were lucky enough to have seen the film during its special theatrical sneak preview have already discovered that this highly anticipated sequel is nothing short of epic - and much of that is due to the gorgeous, sweeping score by Nathan Johnson. Johnson keeps intact the delicate balance that made KNIVES OUT such a clever score, never undermining the danger that is around every corner, but also brings an intoxicating romanticism to every gorgeous landscape. It’s playful, and sinister all at once.
Tumblr media
"This release stands confidently next to previous Nathan Johnson vinyl soundtracks in our catalog,” says Mo Shafeek. “Housed in an appropriately ‘layered’ package featuring prop replicas and easter eggs, this is an essential collectable for fans of Rian Johnson's on-going mystery series."
The package, carefully constructed by Jay Shaw and Mo Shafeek, pays homage to the film's central mystery in multiple ways. Pressed on 2x 140 Gram Crystal Clear vinyl, and housed in a die-cut jacket, with an acrylic o-card, and multiple inserts, the GLASS ONION soundtrack on vinyl will be available for pre-order at MondoShop.com on December 14 at 12pm CT.
In the follow up to Rian Johnson's smash hit Knives Out, Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects. Returning to the franchise he began, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Rian Johnson writes and directs Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and assembles another all-star cast that includes a returning Daniel Craig alongside Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline with Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.
When Rian began writing Knives Out, he asked Nathan to create a unique sonic palette for the world inhabited by debonair detective, Benoit Blanc. Inspired by murder mysteries of a bygone era, Nathan turned to slippery woodwinds, dissonant pianos and eventually the jagged string quartet that would go on to become the film’s audio signature while simultaneously redefining the sound of the modern mystery.
GLASS ONION - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack 2XLP
Music by Nathan Johnson.
Package design by Jay Shaw and Mo Shafeek.

Odds & Ends: November 10, 2023
And There Was Light by Jacques Lusseyran. Kate recently tried watching the new Netflix series All the Light We Cannot See. Unfortunately, it was not good. Is the book it’s based on by Anthony Doerr better? Neither of us have read it. However, the show did remind Kate of another book that’s definitely worth reading: And There Was Light by Jacques Lusseyran. It’s the real-life memoir that inspired Doerr’s novel. Lusseyran went blind as a young boy, but despite this disability went on to lead a French resistance movement during WWII when he was only sixteen. The story of how he did that and survived a concentration camp once he was caught is inspiring enough, but the real treasure in the book is the way he recounts what happened to his other senses once he lost his sight and how he discovered deeper layers of reality and light that most of us are unaware of. The book is quite affecting and transformative. For a taste of Jacque’s story, I highly recommend checking out one of our best and most favorite articles: “Turn Your Excuses Into Action: The ‘Do What You Can’ Guide from the Blind, Teenage Leader of the French Resistance.” Cowboy Belt by Zilker. I’ve been on the hunt for a Western-style belt that reminds me of my Southwestern roots. When I saw the Cowboy Belt on Huckberry, I knew I found the belt I was looking for. Handmade in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Cowboy Belt has given me a reason to tuck in my shirt more so I can showcase it.  The Death of the Slow Dance. This article digs deep into a cultural phenomenon I’ve been noticing in recent years: young people don’t slow dance anymore. Awkwardly shuffling your feet from side to side while some romantic R&B song played in the background used to be a right of passage for teenagers. But DJs have been reporting that Gen Z doesn’t want to do that anymore. Instead, they’re opting for more individual, high-energy type dancing. My son’s middle school dances have skipped slow songs altogether in favor of that nonstop high-energy stuff. What’s led to the death of the slow dance? The author speculates it’s changes in tastes in music (slow, romantic music is out — there’s no Savage Gardens these days), the rise of performative social media (slow dancing doesn’t make for a good TikTok vid), and changes in how Gen Zers socialize; used to the distance and control of digital communication, the vulnerability and intimacy of the slow dance makes them uncomfortable.  The Last of the Mohicans Soundtrack. Recently, I’ve been revisiting the epic soundtrack from The Last of the Mohicans while working out. Tumblr media
As an agency that has had the esteemed privilege to partner with cutting-edge musical acts, we are incredibly passionate about music. And so, for our annual #TheSoundofPride playlist, we're doing things a little different than in years past as this year we're creating our usual #TheSoundofPride playlist celebrating global artists that amplify queer voices and provide the community with the floor-fillers and anthemic songs that soundtrack our summers and beyond.
And in addition to our main playlist, we're also shining a light on "Pop Rising," emerging queer and queer-friendly artists pushing for inclusion and musical globalization who should be on your radar.
