California Snowpack

Howard has prepared a report on the snowpack in the Washington Cascades. I thought that I might provide an update on the snowpack in the California mountains traversed by the PCT. We had an unusually warm autumn and the precipitation that fell was often rain. As a result, on January 1st, the Northern Sierra/Trinity Mountains snowpack was a paltry 32% of normal. The Central Sierra recorded 28% and the Southern Sierra 20% of normal.

The series of atmospheric rivers that have focused on California since have begun to make a rather dramatic improvement in the snowpack. By February 1, Northern Sierra/Trinity Mountains were at 63%, Central Sierra was 54%, and the Southern Sierra was 40%. This is a dramatic improvement that has continued for the first 19 days of the month . . . as of February 19, things looked like this:

From all reports, this coming week will continue to help the snowpack approach normal.

Big Bear Lake in Southern California is reporting a snowpack of 105% of normal. Mt. Laguna has forecast highs well above freezing now and through the coming week.

Here are just a few of the products homegrown by two women’s groups working to protect forests in the Southern Sierra Madre. You can find kamias prunes and catmon sinigang powder from KUMARE, an organization that was founded in the 90’s after a typhoon hit their homes in Real, Quezon. It stands for Kilos Unlad ng Mamamayan ng Real - “Action to develop citizens of Real.” The eco-bag featuring a rafflesia flower is produced by KALIPI Infanta federation, which stands for Kalipunan ng Liping PIlipina - “Association of united Filipino women.” Together they work with the Women Go project of the Haribon Foundation to insure that forest management in their protected area includes women leadership. Worldwide, 85% of government agencies and ministries in charge of natural resources and the environment are still led by men (IUCN 2020). The difficult work to change this, continues. #1 how many words have you written this year?

oh man, i honestly don't know the exact number, but the fresh new word count (even if all of them aren't published works/chapters yet) is around the 70k mark. it's more if you count my ongoing rewrite of my sandor clegane story, Wilting.

#27 what do you listen to while writing?

Usually, instrumental or atmospheric music that relates to what i'm writing in some way. For example, if i'm writing for Vikings/AC: Valhalla, it's typically something like the AC: Valhalla video game soundtrack, Wardruna, etc., to set the vibe. i can't really listen to lyrical music (in English, that is) while writing, whether it's for my academic stuff or fanfic.
