Been thinking of my lovely SLP homies I'm found on here. I'm wondering, should I make a purely SLP advice blog on here, or just post a bunch of SLP advice posts on this blog? If I do make a new one, what would y'all prefer - a sideblog, or an entirely new account?

Can we talk about how BCBS is screwing SLPs?
The title says it all. I am a private practice SLP-Intern and I have recently become aware of some private practice owners stating that Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) is planning to cut reimbursement rates in at least one state by like at least $10. I looked into it and found this was after having a banner year in 2022 during which they made record profits. In addition, apparently in most states (except for North Carolina) they have not raised the reimbursement rates to SLPs in 13 years.
Record. Freaking. Profits.
I'm not sure what the justification is. But it's asinine that they act as if they can't pay SLP services properly while stuffing their faces (metaphorically).
The cuts are supposed to take place next year in February. There is a campaign going on over social media, as BCBS also has the audacity to turn around and publicly pat themselves on the back for "doing so much to help improve the lives of mothers and babies and promote early intervention".
Spread the word. This is horrendously unfair to SLPs and families.

Hello!
This is the RP blog for my Star Trek OC, Girasol Lang, MS CF-SLP or CCC-SLP (depending on the 'verse, timeline, etc). Below, I will have some basic information on the time setting and premise of the blog. A separate post with rules is forthcoming.
Setting:
Sometime during or after the time period of Star Trek: Picard Season 2. I am open to various universes; in my head, I have some ideas in which the events of S2 happened as canon, some in which they did not unfold at all and the Confederation-verse didn't come to be, and even some set during the season and in the Confederation-verse. However, I'm a big fan of plotting, so if you would like to interact with me, message me and we can try to cook up something. I'm also very open to trying something different from my own ideas; I love AUs. However, please read the rules before proceeding with this.
Explanation of Concept:
I, the blog owner, am a speech-language pathology grad student in her final year in real life. If there are two things I have had on the brain, they are Trek and speech-language pathology, and I have decided to merge the two as I have never seen an SLP in Trek. My OC is a speech-language pathologist, and this blog and the resulting RP threads will reflect this fact. A pinned post with some common terms and their definitions is forthcoming. Please feel free to ask for clarification on anything unfamiliar or confusing. And if you have headcanon ideas for the SLP field in Trek, please feel free to suggest some as I rotate these in my brain like a fork in a microwave.
Character:
Girasol Lang, MS CF-SLP/CCC-SLP is a mid-twenties to early-thirties (age can fluctuate) human woman who practices as a speech-language pathologist attaché in Starfleet. Her mission is to serve children with speech or communication disorders across space and help them become effective communicators. Her current specialty is in serving refugees (such as the refugees of the Romulan supernova) and disadvantaged worlds currently lacking or experiencing a shortage of SLPs of their own. She speaks the following languages, in addition to Federation Standard: Spanish, Klingon, Rihannsu (Romulan), Vulcan, and some Bajoran. She does not exclusively serve these populations but would require an interpreter to serve, say, Ferengi or Cardassians. She is a member of the professional organization Federation Speech-Language Hearing Association, or FSHA; the neighboring blog for this fan-made organization can be found at federation-speech-language-assoc.tumblr.com and will soon have fun little headcanons and opportunities to interact for anyone else who would enjoy RPing as SLPs in the Trek-verse.
Thank you for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy the blog, whether you choose to participate in RP with me or if you simply choose to browse and read the storylines.

Audiology and Speech Language Pathology
Audiology and Speech Language Pathology is a Paramedical course and a branch of Medical Sciences. After 10+2 science and NEET, one can opt for graduation (3+1 years) then post-graduation (2 years) and still later you can pursue Doctorate (PhD). Audiology deals with the individuals with ear and hearing related problems. Hearing assessment is performed with the help of many tests like Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA), Immittance Audiometry (IA), Oto-Acoustic Emission (OAE), and Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA).

An IEP Is A Contract - Read It

A family has been receiving reports from one of my clients’ teachers about behavioral challenges in the classroom. These behaviors range from not following directions, to throwing rocks during PE, to touching other students, to fighting with his “frienemy”, to…

Friendly PSA if you can hear and your child is profoundly deaf or hard of hearing, and if regular hearing aids will not allow the child to hear spoken language...
The ABSOLUTE BEST thing you can do is find a friend/teacher who signs and learn to sign alongside your child!! This gives your child a valid and full language that is built for them and their needs, and may even help them learn other languages later if desired. It also helps you communicate with your child effectively!
If you can't/don't want to learn to sign, still make sure your child can learn to sign if possible!! Sign languages are literally made so people like your child can communicate and interact with other people, and your child will thank you later. Any other sort of language will likely be very difficult for them.
Getting them cochlear implants is an option that's controversial in the Deaf community, but definitely an avenue you can explore (the younger the better! The best age to get them for language is 12-24 months!) This option helps people hear sounds in an unconventional way, but may let your child learn to understand and/or use spoken words.
The ABSOLUTE WORST thing you can do is ignore the problem and hope they learn to talk like other children!!!! If the child can't hear conversational speech, they WILL NOT learn to understand or speak a language. This will GUARANTEE lifelong language and learning difficulties if the child has learned a first language by about 7 or 8 years old (depending on the child).
Brought to you by: being forced to place a child in a school situation that will surely result in a cognitive impairment because the child can't hear, child and family can't sign, and the school setting has no adequate way to teach the child sign before age 8. Can't make decisions for the parents, and the parents are culturally against sign. :(

For teacher appreciation week plan make me 2 speech therapist a card. Because they who appreciate most.
School speech therapist treated so wrong. Yet so important. They help many get voice whether aac or verbal. They help them understand more with reading and comprehension and expressive/receptive. Without them would probably never have learned how talk. Without them would struggle way more then current express self and needs and wants.
Without them wouldn’t have made it though school especially middle. Without them wouldn’t know what Is like be able express self. They gave choice in communicate, while always hard will always struggle, they make so don’t have struggle by self. Even if never get point where fine, know have help know someone supporting me. They are who appreciate.

The time has come.
I'm officially finished with clinical fellowship year. I'm now licensed as an SLP in my state.
And I just received my CCC-SLP designation yesterday afternoon.
Tumblr media
Thank you all for rocking with me on this journey to achieve my dreams and become a speech-language pathologist. I'm still not going anywhere yet, so you can expect me to still be on here simping for Elnor (and now Ranpo Edogawa as well) and being an absolute menace fun fandom friend who is also neurodiverse.
To my dear baby speechies just starting the journey, especially if you're neurodiverse and have been following me for a while: you CAN do this. You CAN succeed. And you deserve. I love you. Don't give up on your dreams.
❤️❤️❤️❤️

You all don't understand the dopamine hits I get at work when I get to explain to families that speaking multiple languages at home doesn't cause or contribute to speech delays/disorders.

About me
So a little about me, or as much as I feel comfy giving out on Tumblr.
I'm a speech-language pathologist clinical fellow, about 5 months into CFY. I had been chronicling little bits of my grad school journey on my main blog in-between random silly stuff and Star Trek geekery.
I graduated in May of 2023 from my alma mater (went there for both bachelor's and master's). However, this was after being rejected by them and the other school I applied to my first cycle. I regrouped, rebuilt myself, reapplied, and got in off a waiting list. (I say this to give all my young future grad school applicants hope.)
I work in pediatric private practice, my dream setting. I also used to work in pediatric home health, which wasn't bad but was challenging.
I am self-diagnosed AuDHD, and attempting to find a suitable path for medical diagnosis.
I am a non-traditional grad; I began undergrad later than most and was the second oldest student in my cohort.
I'm extremely geeky and goofy
I identify as a demigirl, which is a non-binary gender identity. I'm not publicly out as I live in an area that is not always the kindest to LGBTQIA, but I find it wise to let y'all know this here. I am barely learning about what it means to embrace who I am.
I'm of Mexican descent and extremely passionate about bilingual advocacy
My favorite areas of the field are AAC, autism and ADHD, pediatric feeding, and early intervention. Ask me about these and I'll talk your ear off.
I started this sideblog as I began to run into more and more aspiring SLPs on Tumblr, many of them looking at grad school, many neurodiverse. I wanted to share my experiences as like a practical guide to help others.

Does anyone else have a thing where sometimes when you’re having a bad ptsd episode or another form of breakdown, you struggle to speak in your native language/most commonly used fluent language, but can speak in another language you use fine. Because rn I’m stammering to all hell when I speak in English but I can speak in Spanish more-or-less fine

am thinking of going into SLP . would like to add to a more accepting environment where nonverbal nonspeaking people listened to . think having experienced long speech loss has given me a unique perspective that could help people I work with . want to specialise in helping people access AAC or maybe trans voice training .
my need for AAC is getting less , really only use it for making posts like this now ( but in future who knows ) , so I don't have communication problems that would block me from studying it . would require closest thing I can do to masking , and a lot of hard work , but if I could help more people communicate would be worth it . is a 4 year course part time .
might not , really want to work in museums too , but is something to look into .
