Final Eizouken fan art drawing I did when the anime was airing. Thought it would be fitting to make it express the basic animation principle of "squash and stretch"

Imagine if Jack became a squash and stretch cartoon, like Johnny Bravo. Like someone taught him that, same as when he learned how to "jump good"
He just shows off his newfound abilities to Aku, and Aku's just like:
"Jack...humans can't do that, what the fuck?"
Like no over the top, projecting voice thst he does. Just pure shock and disbelief.

🐻 In Andreas Deja’s book about the Nine Old Men, the chapter about Frank Thomas features four clean-up animation drawings of Baloo. Thomas animated Mowgli and Baloo’s impromptu boxing match. When Bagheera arrives on the scene, he questions Baloo’s decision to take Mowgli under his wing. The panther says, “And just how do you think he will survive?” Of course, Baloo’s response comes off as hilarious by repeating Bagheera’s question, “How do you think he will? What do you mean how do you think he will?” For the longest time, I have been wanting to do some studies of one of my favorite animated scenes by Frank Thomas, however; it has always been challenging to put down on paper. The scene itself utilizes the use of squash and stretch in Baloo’s facial expressions. 🐾🌴

Bouncing Ball Animation
(Squash and Stretch)
Tumblr media
For our first task we did a squash and stretch bouncing ball animation; my first attempt (as shown above) has to much momentum when entering the screen and appears to have been thrown as opposed to the more uniform dropped bounce that was asked of us the point of contact was also to curved and didn’t possess the sharp entrance and exit that was required
This animation could be improved by moving the 'Squash'ing frames closer together simulating a sharper movement as well as mapping out more uniformed arcs for the ball to follow, further improvement may be found in making sure the ball stays more uniform this could be accomplished by using the 'circle tool' however there is the possibility that this may compromise the character I believe the hand drawn, albite flawed, ball has.

I love seeing artstyles and character designs that look like a constant state of squash-and-stretch. Like

Another animation principle practice. Decided to add the dust FX for a little bit of extra fun.

I'd also like to add that the cub in the AI video lacks weight.
You know how when something is SUPER well animated (by a person) there's a stylized sense of weight and mass to everything tangible in the world that's been created?
Well, the cub on the fake lion's head doesn't have that.
It's difficult to explain in more detail, but that cub looks weightless and the "father" isn't moving his head in a way that makes it appear as though he is carrying a small living hat with, you guessed it; tangible weight.
In 2D animation I've heard the technique for creating weight be called "squash and stretch," I'm not sure what the term is (or if there's much of a difference) in 3D animation.
Remember the 1994 Lion King when Mufasa had Simba on his head? There was weight to that, Mufasa's movements (and Simba's) telegraphed a sense of weight.

by the way since the afterlife scene is apparently a fandom argument, i think it's inherently meta on the concept of an afterlife itself and this is why it shouldn't be confirmed. i don't mind if people think it's real, that's part of the point of its existence and it wouldn't be fun if different people didn't believe different things. i think it's a NDE based on the context clues i read, but that isn't to say that i'm exactly happy about it or "prefer" for it to be one. i do think that when read as a NDE it's the closest the reader ever comes to hans as a character, but that's the only positive i can think of

Animation Exercises
Our Animation blogger, Nicola, shares some animation exercises that she completed. Although Nicola is wonderful at what she does, she shares why it’s important to master the basics, and that it’s never a bad idea to refresh your mind on the fundamentals!
These are three animation exercises I did to practice the basics. I’ve done a few of these exercises before, but it’s always a good idea to return to the foundational ideas. I made a short animation last semester for Digital Illustration with Kevin O’Neill, and I found that even stuff I thought would be simple was a lot more confusing than I expected! So here I am trying to get a solid…
