The Fire Knights of the Impaler
I just wanted to talk about a few of the lesser-known Fire Knights we encounter throughout the DLC—aside from Queelign—because even though they're obscure, each has their own minor story that I find compelling for how they humanize both the members of Messmer’s army and Messmer himself.
So, what exactly is a Fire Knight? Fire Knights are warriors born of Erdtree nobility who wield Messmer’s flame through incantations, as they were unable to embody the flame inherently when it was bestowed upon them. Because of their involvement in the so-called “holy war,” they were scorned by Erdtree society and ultimately cast out from their homes. Despite this, they chose to remain loyal to Messmer, bound to him by oath.

Within the military, Fire Knights hold the highest rank, subordinate to no one but their lord, Messmer. They know him intimately, and not only accepted but understood his true form as a fiery serpent. They recognized that such an existence caused their lord immense suffering—both physical and mental.
Traditionally, Fire Knights wore pointed helms and armor draped in red cloaks, adorned with a twin-serpent gold motif at the neck. Their enchanted weapons—ranging from daggers to greatswords—resembled flowing flames. They also carried sacred seals modeled after Messmer’s emblem: a gold ring encircling a flame, which enhanced the power of their fire incantations.

Some Fire Knights even authored crafting manuals used by Messmer’s foot soldiers—guides for creating fiery tools like fire grease or ember-based fire coils from materials found on the battlefield.
Something I forgot to mention is that the standard helm worn by the Fire Knights actually provides slight boosts to health, stamina, and equip load, while their armor enhances the potency of Messmer’s flame incantations.
Now, onto the known members of the Fire Knight order (excluding Queelign, because I just don’t feel like it haha):

The "leader" or most prominent among the Fire Knights is a man named Kood. The English script gives him the rank of Captain, but from what I can tell, he simply stands above the others in either skill or authority. His helm is shaped in the likeness of Messmer’s winged serpents—creatures said to be wise and noble companions who help suppress the wicked serpent gnawing at Messmer from within. Given this symbolism, and Kood’s position as the lead Fire Knight, it makes me wonder if he served as a kind of advisor or confidant to Messmer, much like the winged serpents themselves.

Kood’s helm enhances the battle arts used by Fire Knights, and he even wields his own unique technique: Flame Spear. With it, he adopts a poised, thrusting stance before unleashing a fiery spear straight ahead. He stands guard before the entrance to Messmer’s dark chambers.

Wego is the “elder” of the Fire Knights. In this context, the term elder refers to an old man, wise with age and experience. Wego is a man utterly consumed by loneliness—it corrodes his heart. This is likely because he has lost those dear to him, as suggested by the two loosened death masks he wears, vertically stacked atop one another. He is also knowledgeable in the arts of resurrection.
This somewhat reminds me of the necromancer Garris, who, after losing his family, dedicated himself to ancient death hexes. He wielded a flail with copper heads, each attached to the handle by chains and crafted in the likeness of his departed loved ones.
Wego may have lost his family—or perhaps comrades. The spiritual nature of Messmer’s flame drew his attention, and he sought to incorporate it into his resurrection arts. However, when Messmer’s flame took root in the corpses he tried to revive, it did not restore their souls. Instead, it produced shambling husks that brought Wego no comfort.
Wego is one of only two Fire Knights known to have spoken dialogue, hoarsely commanding: “Fire, take seed in death and rise again.” The stacked death masks he wears reduce the focus required to summon spirits—fittingly so. He is found alongside his soulless companions within the sunken church district of Messmer’s castle.

The elder Wego had an apprentice named Salza, who would become the wisest among the Fire Knights. Salza was a man who despised barbarity and needless violence, yet he became most notorious for setting numerous Hornsent villages and townships ablaze during the crusade.
However, Salza risked his life when he counseled his superior—either Captain Kood or their lord, Messmer—to spare the old ruins of Rauh, believing that burning such a place would be a grave mistake. Alongside his dear friend, the Fire Knight Hilde, and others, Salza also advocated for the preservation of various Hornsent specimens within the Shadowkeep’s storehouse.

I presume Hilde is a woman, given the feminine connotation of the name. She would perish during the crusade, and her remains were enshrined as a guardian spirit within the storehouse. It’s rather fitting that she would be laid to rest among the very specimens whose preservation she once championed.

Salza is credited with the incantation Rain of Fire, in which he calls upon a burning cloud. With arms outstretched, he yells, “Rain of Fire,” as fiery rain pours down from the sky while he guards the entrance to Rauh. His pointed helm is wrapped in excess cloth, giving the impression of an enlarged head. Fittingly, the helm boosts one’s intelligence.
Seeing the Fire Knight portraits from @arnaerr made me want to write this, lol.

YOU STARED AT THE mission report containing information on your latest mission handed out by the principal and that pitiful feeling swarmed in your belly. it didn’t make sense. you had a perfect score on everything but somehow it wasn’t considered enough and you were still not named a special grade.
it certainly couldn’t be your fault, not when you had spent morning and night training at the grounds of jujutsu high. you barely had an ounce of sleep as you had tackled the training dummies for hours, trying to boost your stamina by running for miles and trying to adapt to your cursed technique. you had never taken a break, always having your eye on the prize.
you were always ahead of everyone at a young age when you still attended a normal public high school, excelling at every subject and the teachers always praising you for your efforts and high marks. but everything was different now that you were suffocated by the terrors and demands of the jujutsu world.
in the realm of jujutsu, you had become lost in an abyss, and you were no longer the greatest. the smartest, the one you had to defeat to win. no, you had lost your prodigy label and had to start over because intelligence was not the sole requirement for survival. to learn how to fight and defend yourself, you must have physical strength. act rationally rather than emotionally.
as a result, you trained yourself until you were blue and bruised, and there was never a day when you didn't start the day with a morning workout and/or a night session. you had this need to be the greatest at everything, unsure of whose approval you sought. it did not matter. you only wanted the gratification of doing good and being respected for it, to be feared rather than despised. however, your hard work was in vain because you were not promoted to a higher level.
what the fuck did they want from you?
and when was it ever enough?
before you realised it, you had crushed the mission report, which had fallen from your strong hold onto the floor. you weren't sure if you were angry or sad; maybe it was a combination of the two that was boiling deep inside and surging through your body. it was so puzzling because you had trained yourself and knew the answer to everything. missions were no trouble for you, and even single missions went well; why the heck haven't you been named a special grade yet?
“what has gotten you into such a buzz?” you heard coming from down the hallway as you turned around only to face the sorcerer you had envied the moment you had become a jujutsu sorcerer yourself. of course it was the fucking six eyes himself.
with lengthy steps, he effortlessly filled the gap between the two of you, his gaze drawn to the crumbled paper on the ground. he used his skill to raise it up and unfold it so he could read what it stated, but he didn't understand why you were so upset about it. it was an excellent mission report, with no further casualties or difficulties. what was the big deal?
"you. the higher-ups. fucking everything, okay?! i’ve worked my fucking ass off for years. i still have the scars from when i initially visited these grounds and worked out till i fucking blacked out, just to resume once i woke up. do you realise how damn fortunate you are? how do you get practically everything? you can do whatever the fuck you want because you are goddamn gojo satoru— that is my problem." you yelled angrily with shaking legs and hands, angry tears welling up in your eyes, but you knew it wasn't fair because he hadn't chosen this kind of life and how everything turned out was simply a matter of luck, but you couldn't keep your indifference hidden.
if he had felt hurt by that, you wouldn’t have known because there wasn’t any kind of feeling displayed on his face. instead, he leaned against the wall with a blank expression and averted his gaze away from you, a small sigh escaping him.
suddenly it had felt as if the world collapsed on you as you slid against the wall and eventually sat on the ground with your arms on top of your knees, your head buried into your arms as the angry tears had trailed down your face. it wasn’t fair. nothing was fair. the higher ups, him, but also the way you reacted wasn’t something he deserved that and you knew that deep down. but still— it was bound to come out sometime.
“i’m so tired…” you whispered to practically no one at all with a shaky breath, your eyes closing as you felt a headache starting due to the amount of crying and a strained voice by yelling. you had expected him to leave and find something useful to do, to not take this venting bullshit from you.
instead, you sensed his presence next to you as he sat down with his legs spread out on the floor. his back was leaning against the wall as he looked up, but he hadn't said anything yet, and you weren't sure whether he was going to. it did have a strangely soothing sense with him seated next to you.
soon enough, he had silently wrapped his arm around you and moved you closer to him. you hadn’t questioned any of his actions, you couldn’t when it felt as if there was a cloud above your head. Instead you nestled into his side and looked up at him teary eyed. “i’m sorry.” you breathed out defeated and gave him a weak smile which he only shaked his head to in response.
"don’t worry about it. you have a point, but i didn’t chose this either. you know? but it's true that they haven't been treating you fairly; i expected you'd be promoted months, if not years ago." he remarked, but he couldn't meet your gaze even though he had removed his blindfold, his white hair strewn haphazardly across his head. you merely nodded, about to open your month and clarify that it wasn't his fault, when he placed a finger on your lips, causing you to scowl.
it made him chuckle, the scowl you had on your face. he admired your feistiness and ability to stay strong even though things weren’t working out. perhaps it made you even stronger than him in a way.
“i know what you’re going to say, but i shouldn’t have showed off my abilities everywhere. however, i’ll fix this. alright? you just go and have a good night sleep.” he reassured you which only left you confused. how was he going to fix this and what for? you had basically just thrown a tantrum like a small child.
your thoughts were interrupted as you felt him drop a kiss on your head, causing blood to surge to your cheeks. you were about to comment on it, but he had already stood up and reapplied his blindfold, making his way to whatever he was planning to do.
"hey, satoru!" you yelled out from behind, still seated on the floor, arms on top of your knees. he came to a halt in his tracks and casually turned around; if you hadn't known better, you could have imagined there was a faint red glow on his own face.
“thank you.”
“no worries, y/n.”
the next morning, you awakened and put on your uniform, eager to get out of your room, until you discovered the mail slipped beneath your door. you frowned as you kneeled to the ground and picked up the letter. as you read what it stated, a huge grin appeared on your face, and a sense of victory ran through your body.
you were officially named a special grade.
you had no idea how satoru had done this or how he dealt with it, but you were extremely grateful. you realised you may not have earned what he had done for you after complaining about him in such a dramatic manner, but you couldn't help how you felt.
though it wasn’t long before you managed to figure out a way on how to thank him.

something that I haven't really seen being talked about/mentioned is that Tim having some of the Lazarus Pit's water inside his body and it's side effects (if there's any), like, would minor wounds and injuries not affect Tim even though he doesn't have a spleen? does he heal faster? run faster? better stamina or flexibility?? did he get stronger?? does he have shorter temper? does his eyes flicker Lazarus green when feeling strong, negative emotions or does he sometimes hear it's whispers when he's feeling strong, negative emotions??

Hmm... is this the hc/au idea that Ra's, to "help" Tim post splenectomy, injects or feeds Tim some Pit water?
It's not a full dip, so the effects are drastically reduced, but it still changes Tim.
I've barely seen this AU, but there are two reasons Ra's could have done this.
He genuinely wants to help Tim (not out of the goodness of his heart, though)
This would lead Tim to be susceptible to influence/manipulation
This does depend on your HCs for Lazarus Pit effects. The overall canon rule is that it heals the dying and kills the healthy. Other than that? Canon is all over the place.
So, do people post-dip enjoy enhanced strength, healing, stamina, and flexibility? Are their anger or all emotions heightened? Do they have the cool mood ring light up eyes? It is up to you ^^
I did like the idea you proposed of injected Pit water giving Tim a boosted immune system/healing speed. However, I also like the idea that Pit effects fade.
Therefore, Tim slowly becomes sicker and weaker as he becomes more susceptible to illness ^^ He can either inject himself with more Pit water or find an alternative (like taking more break, changing his diet, taking antibiotics, etc).
What if Ra's regularly sent him Pit injections to help him combat his lack of spleen? This could be a way that Tim owes Ra's or a manipulation technique. Maybe Tim has to pay back the "medicine" (through passing along information, running leadership like tasks, doing missions, or whatever).

- Blondie eats a ham and cheese on bread and he seems very well put together and can take a lot
- Helped me burnout
- Downside: delayed cursed energy recovery if overeaten—probably due to digestion fatigue.
2. High-Protein Foods (Meat, Tofu, Eggs)

Patch May 4th
Well that got away from me a little bit, here's a bargain bin full of small fixes and clarifications. Any substantive change that's not just clearing up wording has bold on it:
Martial Arts involving a melee attack now specify that they inherit the damage type of the weapon you're using - this made sense intuitively anyway, but it was worth being clear
Some minor clarifications on Pin, Shield and Boost Kick so their intent is clear.
Quickload may now be used in conjunction with other Trickshots because otherwise it just kind of sucks
Added the ability for the Drift Technique Stunt to be used with two-wheeled vehicles so you can Akira slide - and do so under that tanker truck that's sideways, but you can only drift for one turn!
The Brake Check and PIT Manoeuvre Stunts can now be used against vehicles up to one weight class above yours because without that they're just Ramming But Worse
Specified that the Gotcha! Stunt refers to you catching people with your vehicle, not reaching out the driver side window to catch people that sounds like it would end badly
The Blend In trait now has an * on the "you can't take this as a Pony" rule because there are exceptions like Palominians but there isn't the space to explain that in the Trait box
Added the Staggered condition to the list of Crowd Control effects on tab 10. It's just reference in case you never read the Martial Arts section
Specified that Aim only benefits the immediately proceeding Action
Specified that Thermocompensator Vest targets Resistance
Changed the notation on special ammo for the Amount of Default ammo to be "-" rather than "Infinite" because that raises more questions than it answers
Specified that the Combat Power Wing does not lose its Cover bonus against Opponents at higher altitudes
Specified that Heelz don't do anything if you're flying
Specified that normal methods of Fall mitigation do not apply to the damage taken in car crashes
Carrying capacity of ASL Encore buffed from L to 0.5. We'll be monitoring this change closely and watching out for any shenanigans that result. We're really trusting the community not to go crazy on this one.
Cargo capacity of F512 Hovercraft nerfed from L to 0. This terror has finally been reined in. I know the F512 mains will have my head for this one but the toxic gameplay that came out of this just had to stop.
Specified what happens with drones regarding Mind & Spirit damage - drones can be disoriented by dazzling attacks, but don't take damage, and they also don't have feelings you can hurt. But also, they don't pass this damage to the pilot in manual mode - I would imagine that someone piloting a drone in combat is expecting gunshots to peak the audio on their device, and has the volume adjusted accordingly. Not the same as getting literally flashbanged yourself.
Broadened the wording on what drone pilots are allowed to take advantage of with an aim action to include Trickshots
Specified that the Martial Staff is compatible with the Target Sprint Routine and also that you spend the stamina for all three spells cast
Specified that After-Image only affects sight and sound, which opens the door for somebody to use an exotic sense to tell it apart
Expanded wording on Simulacrum to specify that it can affect a range of senses (1/rank in spellcraft) but it is phantom and can't push buttons for you
Specified that when using Projection you need to have a sense to be able to deceive or perceive it - you can't use Projection to temporarily gain senses you don't have.
Spelled out on Spirit Blade some of the finnicky details of how it interacts with Martial Arts and Action Economy
Rising Strike reworked to clear up the ambiguity around Fall Damage and streamline the spell a bit more. It now launches equal to Margin of Success instead of a fixed 4 (which means a lot of Rising Strikes are going to be kind of underwhelming but some of them are going to be really impressive), and the ceiling height does NOT affect damage - because if you think about it, getting rocketed into a low ceiling comes with the consolation prize of only falling one floor instead of three. However, there's now a clause that explicitly damages the ceiling if you do that, opening the door (or, the ceiling) for some real matrix kung fu antics where you punch someone into the floor above.
Specified that Steady Heart and Knit Wounds cannot be cast multiple times per short rest
Dragonbreath has had its range buffed from 4 to Cone 4
Shared Burden now times out at 15 minutes so you don't have a Breezie shoulder buddy who makes you ungrapplable forever
Stated explicitly that queued hacks tick down in parallel, not in sequence - parallel was always the intention because Hacking gets comically weak if you need to wait for each one to go off before you start the next one, but apparently this wasn't spelled out

Keith Shadis stood at the forest entrance patiently, waiting for the ambush of cadets to line up and commence maneuver gear training. On his mark, he released the trainees free to the skies and into the towers of trees, trailing behind on his own set of gear to inspect, like a hawk tracking its prey. 
Today was dedicated solely to drills and Titan-target practices, as well as a test of endurance and stamina. Lectures upon lectures on maneuver gear safety always repeated themselves before take off, as rules must be obeyed to prevent any measly accidents. 
But all to be focused on right now was losing your sense of reality to the wind and the trees. The satisfactory sensation of feeling weightless to the wires that pulled your body from trunk to trunk. So light and fresh like a leaf floating down to the forest floor. Funny, this machine taught you to kill, and yet it worked so beautifully. You’d never get tired from this.
In the distant right, Sasha’s cackles echoed along the branches, meshing together with Connie’s and Jean’s hollers. Up ahead, the infamous Shiganshina trio grouped together like a pack of wolves. Somewhere far off you could pick up the occasional yell of a stray trainee who’d crash landed. It was during these trying times where trainees who weren’t capable fell out and returned to their homes. 
As you sharply swung along a corner, your sights locked on the familiar wooden cut-out of a fifteen-meter Titan, the nape of the neck clean of wounds. You readied your swords from their sheaths with a pump of gas, boosting acceleration. Arms raised in the air, you prepared yourself. 
A shout escaped your throat as the swords sliced down on the neck, carving a precise cut on the makeshift Titan. The wood tumbled to the dirt below. A perfect kill..!
You almost laughed as you abandoned the Titan to pursue the hunt. Not too far away from the cutout, a zip of wires grew louder from behind. A certain roommate beamed at you as she neared.
“Hey [Y/N]! Mind if I tag along?”
You cocked your head. 
“You just want to latch onto my kills!”
Mina dramatically gasped.
“Can’t we just hangout like the friends we are?”
You pressed on the gas trigger and propelled forward.
“Nope, I don’t trust you.”
Mina huffed at the playful tone in your voice, soon gliding away to resume her hunt elsewhere. 
A little while after the brief encounter, another Titan stood in the distance. The size was a bit shorter this time, standing at around ten-meters, and once again, unscathed nape. 
Seems like luck was at your beckoning today. Gripping onto the swords, you launched your hook grabbles and braced yourself to make the cut. 
SHIIING
…Only for the kill to be stolen.
“Hahaha sorry [Y/N]! Couldn’t resist!”
The hooks released from the cutout and into the tree trunk beside you, allowing you to softly swing as you watched Mina fly away, a trail of steam dissipating behind her. A scoff of disbelief was all you could muster.
What the fuck?

End results noted a total of seven Titan kills. 
A comparable score, considering the hunting was done solo. 
“We managed to get ten kills! Not to mention, when we’d split up, we covered more ground. A success, I’d say.”
Connie bragged while Sasha enthusiastically ate her porridge, lifting a spoon to emphasize his point. Jean made a scene to stick his nose into the conversation.
“Allow me to add that I got a higher score on technique, so if you need any maneuver gear lessons, I’m your guy.”
Connie swatted at his chest.
“Shut up, you wish.”
You heard Mina giggle beside you. Her elbow gently nudged your side.
“Did you hear how much Mikasa got? Thirteen.”
Thirteen..?
“Holy shit, really?”
Connie barged in from across the table.
“Yes! She’s amazing.”
Sasha planted her palms onto the wood to lean in. 
“I saw her in action! She flies so fast, it’s like you can barely see her coming.”
Jean’s face warmed noticeably. “She’s incredible.”
The group unanimously agreed. Mikasa denied the laws of nature and succeeded in winning at any obstacle thrown at her. Some theorized she wasn’t human. 
You threw a glance her way. Such straight posture, no hint of life beside the occasional blink, calmly eating her meal like she was at the King’s tea time. Where every cadet appeared exhausted, her skin radiated without any bruises, sweat, and dirt. Maybe she was non-human. 
A frown weighs the corners of your mouth when you turn back to your dinner.
 Seven gets lost in thirteen.

WHAM
Your spine smacked the rough clay as you tumbled ridiculously, legs falling over your head when it came to a stop. Annie was a ferocious partner, not breaking a single worry in this pitiful battle you were putting up. Throwing a leg over your waist, pinning you to the Earth, she jabs the wooden knife into your chest.
“I win.”
You blinked a few times. All you could respond with was a weak groan. 
The girl doesn’t hold out a hand to help you get up. Instead, she saunters off to find a new opponent, one more worthy of a fight, you presumed. Rolling to your stomach, the tension in your thighs feel like it could snap. You shakily stand back up.
“She’s a tough one.”
Reiner towers over your shoulder with hands on his hips. You notice him watching the said girl with an unreadable expression. He claps a palm on your shoulder. It almost knocks you over.
“You okay?”
You nod. “..M’ fine.”
“Don’t be too harsh on yourself. I can see it happening already.”
He points with his chin towards Annie again. 
“She wins against everyone. She’s just strong like that.”
Strong.
“Huh..”
You feel him give your back two heavy pats. 
“You got this.”
He stomps away after that. Watching him leave, that same frown comes back. 
..
“[Y/N], did you see what happened today? I was training with Connie, and we came up with this new fighting technique! I swear it’s like we can read each other’s minds or something.”
All you could hear was noise, loud, blatant noise. Sasha plopped your bread in her mouth. You didn’t even notice.
“Also, last night I had the strangest dream. I was back home in the forest, and I was hunting game with my father like the ol’ days, but then this huge bear came out of nowhere…and then…”
The Dauper girl’s story faded through your ears into the files of your brain. Dinner had gone cold by now, your silverware limp in your hold. The bowl of vegetable stew encaptured your gaze in a trance, and if you looked away you were sure to be cursed.
“Hey, you alright?”
Mina gently caressed your shoulder, breaking you free from hypnosis.
“Yeah, yeah..I’m fine.”
Your words dripped with uncertainty. Both tablemates frowned, but nonetheless carried on with their meal. Spooning up a bit of soup, you grimaced when you swallowed. Cold..

Seven knocks down to two or three in the passing weeks. The downturn of lips becomes more permanent than temporary. More bruises and wounds make home underneath your uniform. And somehow at the end of the day, the exhaustion feels more intense than the day before. 
A cadet’s routine was never advertised as glamorous, but everywhere you looked, no one else appeared to be drowning. The break in the water was close, just an arm’s length away if you stretched hard enough. The waves swarmed your body with a strong turbulence, but you kept pushing and pushing, fingertips raised above to graze the surface.
 And for a moment you can breathe, a deep inhale relieving your lungs from the strain of water…but it’s in that bliss when the water controls you again, pulling you deeper into an abyss.
Shadis imprinted the hairs on your neck to forever remain stiff, on edge and paranoid for more lecturing and criticism. In the midst of your drowning, did the man see the effort? Was this war amongst yourself just in your head, an illusion, or did he perceive the strength you were desperately wanting? Craving?
The mystery is frustrating. 
….
The empty room draws a deep frown. The bunks usually covered in strewn blankets, harness straps and roommates gossiping were vacant and darkened with the night. Your eyebrows furrow, a puff of air flowing out your nose. The room felt wrong without the presence of comrades. Stepping out of the cabin, the door closes with a creak. 
The wooden steps became the next best solace as you perched yourself at the top, arms wrapping around pulled up knees, chin resting on top. The mess hall served as a beacon of light compared to the isolated bubble you resided in. Through the warm toned windows you could see the cadets enjoying themselves with the same vegetable stew and loaf of bread that was prepared each night. 
…Maybe this time alone was a blessing in disguise. Perhaps that’s what you needed. A break from all the noise. 
Raising your hands to rest on your head, your eyelids drooped until they closed, weariness grabbing the reins. A distant cry of crickets join you in the dark, their chorus bellowing beyond the pitch black forest. Behind shut doors, the moon glistens her rays on your skin like a comforting embrace, welcoming you to raise your head and let her caress your face. 
It’s tempting. Her touch is soft and gentle, approaching you carefully as if not to spook you. 
“...[Y/N]..?”
It threatens the emotion in your chest. Her spotlight paints the reminder of your solidarity on the wooden steps. And yet she’s pushing you, cheering you on from her place in the sky. With that, she briefly leaves, the clouds swooping in to conceal her light.
Your face rolls over on your knees, cheek now smushed against sleeves. 
“[Y/N]?”
…?
Has she come back?
Your eyes meet blue as you lift your head. 
…The blonde stood uncomfortably a few feet away from the porch. His fingers pulled at his sleeves before his arms decided to cross behind his back. His eyes, so large and worried, blinked at you in rhythms; twice, once, twice, once.
You blinked back.
“...Hey, Armin.”
He glances to the beacon of light.
“Aren’t you heading to dinner..?”
Your hand falls to dangle by your shoe.
“..Not tonight. I’m not hungry.”
He pops his knuckles at his sides. 
“You sure? Skipping meals isn’t good for you..”
“I’m sure.”
His frown deepens. 
You’ve nestled back into your home already, staring upon the shadows filtering throughout the camp. 
..His footsteps trudge over to the steps, and you face him when he sits beside you, body position matching yours. Armin lost his stare into the forest, fingers tapping sporadically from where they laid over his biceps. He doesn’t mind that you observe him. 
You followed him into the trees and rested there, the wind and crickets harmonizing in a beautiful symphony. 
Armin was a calm in the storm type of person. His best friend seemed to speak for three, never afraid to holler his frustrations, but on the other side of the spectrum lay this boy, the polite boy who loved to read. He’d apologize for existing, apologize for taking up space, before he ever sat down to introduce himself. 
“You’re easy to watch.”
It took everything in you to not choke. Armin instantly panicked.
“I-In training, I mean..! When we’re doing drills? Combat drills?”
His words puddled out in a hurry, the skin of his cheeks blaring bright red. 
"Pfft.."
“I just mean, you’re impressive! Or, inspiring? I uh, I’m not good at that stuff, so-,”
Your sudden boisterous laughter made him freeze. Armin couldn’t see your face anymore now that it was ducked over your thighs, shoulders trembling with cackles. Your arms caressed your aching stomach as if it could cease the attack, but it just kept advancing. 
“Uh…”
Finally rising off your thighs, you swooped in deep breaths to calm your heartbeat, a couple giggles escaping here and there.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you laugh..”
You waved him off with a hand. 
“No, no, don’t be. I liked it.”
His face was a never ending tomato. Now it looked like he was sweating a bit. 
“But, what you were saying…you watch me?”
Armin smacked both palms to his face. “I was trying to compliment your skills, but I apologize that it came off as stalkerish.”
Another wave of laughs pass through your smile. “It didn’t, it just caught me really off guard.”
He reveals his blue eyes to you again. “That’s good, I guess..”
Your expression slightly dims when you turn away from him.
“Well, thank you.”
Armin’s lips part, but then close.
Wafting through the crevices, the moon rejoins you on the steps, this time encasing Armin in her light. By now, the mess hall was dismissed, sending cadets off to bed to end the day and rest for tomorrow. 
“Guess dinner’s over..”
His comment reawakes your reality, that tomorrow brings new hardships and restless nights. It makes you wince.  
“I’m gonna..head off to bed.”
He twists to you while you stand. He’s caught in perplexity, you can see it clearly, but his mouth doesn’t move.
“...Goodnight, Armin.”
Armin perks up.
“For sure..! See you tomorrow.”
He rises to his feet and moves down the steps in a swift motion, his blonde hair vanishing the further he walks away.
His departure has you glued to the entrance door, hand wrapped around the handle but still staring off the direction Armin went. Your brows worry themselves on your forehead, unsure to be confused, sad, or drowsy.
Hauling the door open, you decide the latter.
