There's still enough for me to love, but none of it's the main plot. It's getting space-opera convoluted here - more clones, advanced technology, people treating the civilisations that formed without APOLLO as lesser--

...Wait. If we have APOLLO and DEMETER and HADES and HEPHAESTUS ... why do we have MINERVA? Every single one of the subordinate functions, and even the rogue AI Nemesis, were named for Greek gods, so why didn't they go with ATHENA?

Anyway, we're going into a vaguely colonialist direction far beyond shit like the Carja being stuck-up about everything and I am not sure I like it. Also I want to punch Sylens in the face for effectively arming the rebel Tenakth. What does he gain from destabilising the region? More to the point, what do these Techno-God dipshits gain from it? They have to be helping with that shit somehow.

Illustrated Primer

Illustrated Primer, Market Drift Games, 2005

If you're thinking of the title of The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer, you are right on target. Illustrated Primer is a mid-future game, set between a Neuromancer near-future and a Star Trek far future.

The personal-level setup is a family of women being pulled into a story that's always bigger than they realize, until they can turn the tables on the big players and take control of their own story. This happens against a backdrop of a massive technological shift - AI, nanotech, bioengineering, neural interfaces, all happening at once and reinforcing one another.

Your character has a set of base stats, randomly determined "straight down the line". They have a randomly determined background that sets skills and resources. It's all pretty swingy - you might be a rich, young, highly skilled woman or a great-grandmother with nothing left but memories. It's up to you to stitch all those random backgrounds together into a unique family story of marriage, divorce, estrangement, love, and adoptions.

If you're not a fan of chargen that's random to that level, the good news is that they hardly matter. It's the tech trees that determine your real abilities. At the beginning of the game, only a few enhancements are open. As the game goes on, the GM opens up different parts of the tech tree based on in-game events. Your characters are likely to be involved in developing some of the tech. Other pieces will be opened up as individuals and corporations around the world release their discoveries.

Your character's motivations and personal limits are key, especially because this amazing, powerful, immature technology has side-effects and drawbacks. Some even let you choose - are you going to take the dexterity reduction from the bulk, the stealth penalty from the heat signature, or the charisma penalty from the nervous system hijack? The best part - what's the only part of character creation that isn't random? Your motivations and personal limits. What does the XP system let you change? Motivations and personal limits.

The game book is somewhat reminiscent of the book for the Die RPG but in black-and-white. The art is not quite as fantastic, but quite good. There are a few iconic characters who appear multiple times. The layout is fairly standard. I feel like it might benefit from an update with a more avant-garde approach.

The system uses a d6 dice pool fairly similar to Open D6. It tones down the all-out craziness of the Wild Die, requiring extra 6s or 1s before the critical hits/fails kick in. It uses the roll's total for success, and a target number system to trigger enhanced successes based on tech powers or charge up higher-powered abilities.

All in all I'm a big fan of the game. It tells a specific, wide-spanning but character-focused story, with enough flexibility that it doesn't feel railroaded or forced. The tech tree is expansive enough to make every character unique. Most of the tech is at least plausible. All in all, a definite win for Market Drift Games.

I have another game with this name waaaay down my review queue, so we might get to that some day. It's a much more pastel kind of game, but equal amounts of... calling it "girl power" feels dismissive, but that's because people dismiss girls and women. Anyway, it's fun, and I hope I get to review it eventually.

Assassin's Creed Mirage Review

While the last three installments of the Assassin's Creed series (Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla) deviated from the play style of the original titles to go bigger and bolder with an open world setting and a full blown gear system to grind, Mirage is a return to the franchises beloved roots... for better or worse. (Spoiler free review to follow) Players take on the role of Basim Ibn Ishaq, a thief in the City of Baghdad, who frequently takes jobs for a secret organization known as "The Hidden Ones". One such job leads to the discovery of an artifact that upon touching, gives Basim a cryptic vision. This event also directly lead to the killing of a city official the culling of innocents in response, Basim's escape from his home, and his induction into The Hidden Ones. Once his training is finished, Basim returns to Baghdad to hunt for answer about his vision, and members of the Order of the Ancients, a secret cult pulling all the string in the region. (Pretty standard stuff for an Assassin's Creed game.) I'll start off by saying, the game looks amazing. I played on the PS5, and the graphics are visually outstanding. The only issue I ran into was the white cursor would blend into the background of the menu, but that was fixed by adjusting the brightness in game or the display setting on the TV. The map size has been significantly condensed compared to previous titles, and focuses solely on the main city and a few outlying areas. Less to explore: yes, but this also means less emptiness across the map that we saw in the open world predecessors. Regions of the map are also no longer "level based" as in previous titles. Where an imaginary line could mean the difference between being a literal god, a fair yet challenging fight, or being an ant smeared on the bottom of an enemies boot in combat. With leveled enemies gone it also means that there is no longer that annoying drastic in-campaign difficulty spike because the main quest line takes you to a new area of the map with a higher set level for enemies. Combat has also reverted back to a pre Origins form. Seemingly slowed down, the combat system in Mirage rewards patience & timing rather than attempting to overwhelm enemies with attacks. One specific enemy type is only damageable from behind, & certain enemies are block happy & will deflect all incoming blows almost forcing players to play the waiting game, holding attacks until they can counter or dodge out of the way to flank. Getting outnumbered by these enemies can easily lead to player death as dodging & attacking can eat up a small stamina bar that once gone leave players vulnerable to attacks from all directions.

This leads to a return of the emphasis on stealth, which I am a big fan of. It doesn't necessarily make the game any less or more difficult, but does add a level of strategy that could be neglected in the other most recent entries in the series. You're not going to fight your way out of all situations like you might have before. Guards are everywhere, & while their AI is not all that great, if the player leaves bodies lying around in the open, guards will eventually find them. A civilian seeing an aggressive act will report it and notoriety increases just as if a guard saw it. This makes it easy to accidentally stack levels of notoriety and bring in more challenging enemies that will hunt the player down until the level is decreased or they they die. The not so great things about the game are mostly small, but these things add up in the end. This is a personal nitpick of mine & has no effect on game play, but for being a secret group called "The Hidden Ones", an abnormal amount of NPCs are aware of the groups existence and activities.

Character are bland & forgettable, protagonist included. Basim is neither likable or unlikable, he's just there.  Lee Majdoub does a great job voicing the main character, but nothing the protagonist does in-game really makes you want to root for or even against him.

Mirage adds a faction token feature as currency for hiring mercenaries & the like to distract guards, open secret chests, and purchase other specialty services. I personally like the idea of this feature, but where its implemented seems flawed at time. For instance, having to leave a campaign mission to go do side missions to get more tokens to buy a key or bribe an NPC is emersion breaking and frustrating. This didn't happen a lot, but it happened enough that it was beyond annoying.

This next bit has happened the last few games, but once the last "boss" is defeated the game ends on a 15 minute cut scene broken up by a walking simulator in the middle. If a lot of information was dumped at this time or there was some ridiculous twist that needed some exposition I could understand the lengthy scene, but the revelation we got (no spoilers) could have been made in a fraction of the time and without making me walk in 4 different directions to stagnant points in an dark, open, empty space to hide the loading of the next half of the cut scene.

Luckily they skipped any "out of animus" segments this time around, but it's starting to feel like series wide Isu plot is hindering the franchise. It doesn't feel like it seamlessly blends into game specific plot and almost feels forced in after the fact as an obligation in a sort of "oh yeah, we committed to this thing, throw it in here" kind of way.

Lastly for my "negatives", other than looking great graphically there was nothing about this game that makes you go "Wow". Total run time for Mirage's main campaign is about 20 hours. Anyone hoping to complete everything Mirage has to offer can realistically add anywhere from another 10 to even 20 hours to that total. While I can appreciate a shorter adventure, with as quickly as I finished the main game it almost feels like this could have just been a big DLC for Valhalla. Overall I did have a good time playing Mirage. Its a "Good" game, it's not a "Great" game though. Fans of the franchise, especially fans of the early entries in the series, should enjoy it. It also feels like it could be a decent spot for anyone who has never played an Assassin's Creed game before to jump into the series. Mirage was a fun experience, I would definitely recommend anyone that thinks they want to play it, does, I doubt you'll be disappointed, but I would also recommend maybe waiting for it to go on sale because the 50 to 60 dollar price tag for the base game seems a tad steep for the amount of game you get.

PC Starfield Tweaking Guide — Mods and Tweaks

After receiving positive reviews, Bethesda Game Studios’ new RPG debuted on Steam with 245K concurrent users today, including owners of the $100 Starfield Premium Edition until September 6th.

BGS games have always inspired PC modders, and Starfield is no exception. Even though the official modding tools won’t be published for a few months, the community has come up with several changes and proto-mods to improve the experience. We’ve included the most significant community improvements below.

Starfield doesn’t stutter like other current PC games, but its nature makes it hefty. Thus, performance optimisation should be sought wherever possible.

We haven’t verified reports that manually activating Resizable BAR for NVIDIA GeForce GPUs improves performance. This is the overall method if you want to attempt.

Bulwarkhd created a Performance Texture Pack to reduce VRAM usage by lowering the typical texture resolution from 2K to 1K or even 0.5K for those with a configuration near the minimal requirements.

In a recent post, Nexus Mods user Erok posted optimised graphic preset.ini files for Low, Medium, High, and Ultra to boost PC frames.

Starfield’s visuals are enhanced by Bethesda’s newest Creation Engine, which the makers claim is the most advanced technology in their game. The most notable changes from Bethesda games are the animations and Global Illumination lighting.

Visuals

There are methods to improve the visuals even at this early stage of its public release. Many players noted the yellow/green tinge and high black levels first. Both may be part of the developer’s creative vision, but the gamma cannot be changed in-game.

The settings usually darken evenings. Depending on the ReShade setting, performance may drop by 5% or 10%. You may always use the ReShade option to deactivate shaders unrelated to colour fixes if you like.

Epiphany Absolute is developing the first Starfield HD Texture Pack mod. The author revealed that AI upscalers are doubling texture resolution from 2K to 4K. Of course, this effort is ongoing. Currently available upscaled textures: Aquatic, bladed, flowers, forest, rocks.

Epiphany Absolute posted another ship HD Texture Pack mod a few hours ago. The installation is identical. Remember that only Discovery, Hopetech, Pirate, Ship Common, and Starborn have been revised.

Gameplay

While playing Starfield, I realised that stealth is more harder than in prior Bethesda games. The devs may have overtuned NPCs”senses’

Thanks to two modifications, they may be adjusted. Zzyxzz’s ‘Better Out of Line of Sight Sneaking’ reduces foes’ hearing accuracy when you’re hiding behind obstructions. According to the creator, the game’s default setting is 0.4, but the mod lowers it to 0.33 like earlier BGS games.

Also, transfer SneakSoundLosMult.txt from the mod to the Starfield folder.

Gameplay Tweaks and Fixes by Ixion XVII reduces NPC view cone detection (from 190 to 170) and opponent visibility in exteriors (by 5%) in Starfield.

It functions similarly to the previous mod. StarfieldCustom.ini’s [General] section needs the following command:

Zzyxzz, who made the first mod in this area, also released a Less Spongy Enemies mod that decreases NPCs’ health gain when they level up. The default amount is 20, but this mod may change it to 15, 10, 5, or 0.

Quality of Life

Starfield, like other BGS games, is complicated. Sometimes that shows in the User Interface or other ways the game may be more accessible or responsive. Quality-of-life changes will aim to solve it.

First, how to enter the game faster. The ‘Undelayed Launching’ mod by Seb263 skips the Bethesda logo and health warning messages by tweaking StarfieldCustom.ini and adding a new file.

Increase the spaceship’s Field of View optionally. Again, adjust the value to your liking.

Want a more immersive interface? You need franchfroise’s ‘Immersive Tactical Hud’ mod. It eliminates opponent health bars, names, hip-fire crosshairs, compresses crosshairs and the level-up indication, changes the experience bar, and improves hit marks and crit notifications. Installation is same to above.

However, Stentorious’ Simple Compact Inventory adds 12 displayed items and an optional file to organise goods by Value:Mass ratio.

TomLikesGuitar added this option and a beneficial Value:Weight ratio sorting mod.

In both circumstances, extract the Data files into the main Starfield folder and check StarfieldCustom.ini:

Last but not least, McGuffin’s IconSortingTags adds additional icons to Starfield’s inventory and loot window to help players see what they have. Same installation process as above.

This one is a bit slight, and hardly excellent, but it's a nice hang with my personal close friends, the men from Metalocalypse Rock Band. In this one, Murderface is miffed that Toki and Skwisgaar have undermined his command performance of the Star Spangled Banner using nothing more than his dick and a bass guitar. They undermined Murderface by being in a high speed police chase, which interrupts the broadcast of Murderface rockin with his brain out. 

Speaking of brain out, the best scene in this episode are Toki and Skwisgaar at traffic school, watching an ultra violent educational video about how being irresponsible with your car can get your body all wet and in pieces. It is wet from your blood getting escaped from your body. Good lines, gruesome drawings, it’s the good shit of the episode. 

Murderface wants to do a convoluted event that’s a race and also a concert. Toki and Skwisgaar get involved by way of their community service. And Nathan Explosion and Pickles not only have nothing to do with the plot, but they make a point to just always be reading the paper whenever they are referred to. This is a funny meta-joke about how frustrating it must be to have a show like this and constantly have to come up with individual plots for each character. At least, I assume that’s what this is.

Counterstrike: Condition zero: Deleted Scenes review

CounterStrike: Condition Zero: Deleted scenes is a single palyer addon to the game CounterStrike: Condition zero which was single player version of 1.6 with challenges and some better graphics.

I played on hard mode, like i typically do with games, and is just insane. Enemies suddenly spawning right behind you, AI runs around like headless chickens on crack, ragdolls flung around the room like the poltergeist is happening. It's Jedi test of relaxes.

It's insane. Even with the framerate capped to slow their reflexes, its still fast and almost aimbot like. They know where you are at all times and you only got a split second to fire. Only on stealth levels is their awareness drastically reduced to accommodate the stealth gameplay which is to stay out of sight.

Some levels are better then others like Secret War or Recon, but most get worst the further you get through the game. It feels like they got lazier when designing levels. The further you get in, the more likely you will witness enemies t-posing as they spawn right in front of you and I wasn't going fast ether. Some levels you can break the spawns by moving too fast or carefully positioning yourself. It a mentally exhausting game of trying to predict where the next enemy will spawn and how. You won't get any warning or hear them.

It feels like they want the game to play more like a standard fps game, but it use counterstrike mechanics which makes some encounters and levels really frustrating with the bad accuracy and bad weapons you can be stuck with. The basic shotgun is so inaccurate past 5 feet, but you get expected to use it 20 feet away and too slow too. On higher difficulties, it can take multiple headshots to kill an enemy so shotgun and some pistols can be very risky to use.

Shame as some levels have some cool scenario's like sneaking through places and using wire camera or a cool die hard like action scenarios Like the skyscraper or one where you got to take control of an icebreaker ship. The japan levels have some really good environmental designs and are of the few where you feel like you are in a city. Graphically the game is more advanced then counterstrike 1.6 with some really detailed models.

I wanted to like the game but no matter what, I just got more and more disappointed with the game. I did manage to complete every mission except the bank level because of a bug. Most scenario's you are just thrown in with brief details and nothing really tying any mission together. Bugs, bad level designs, gameplay issues, etc. make this a bad game both back then and now.

We didn't talk about the kiss for months. We had more important things to do.

My mechanical hand made a lot of progress, we decided to remove my old one and to replace it completely. It was pretty close to a human hand now, regarding the movements at least. And we managed to find a surgical material to cover up the hole in Jindoshs skull, so only a small scar could be seen.

 The reduction of the costs of the clockwork soldiers was successful. We also created a more lively AI and different models. One strictly for heavy attacks, one for stealth and assassinations, one for pure defense and other ones for the satisfaction of needs. We worked together on the designs, some got metallic wings, some heavy armor. The AI was a more difficult task, which is still in the early stages. We managed to replicate the human brain, but in a mechanical way.

 Jindosh thankfully had some living test subjects left. Our first few prototypes were still attached to them. I made a lot of progress and started creating an entire map of the brain, with different colors and numerals for each area. So we found out which part we should reproduce and rewire how for each model. Jindosh mainly focused on the mechanical and I did the neurological and the psychological part.

 It took us about 4 month working day and night before our first prototype was finished. After that it went on a lot quicker. After 6 month we had our first stealth assassin clockwork soldier. Still too late, because it was disabled by Emily Kaldwin herself. She simply chopped both arms off and beheaded it. It was stumbling through the room bumping into the walls and furniture, poor thing. Meanwhile Jindosh and I were kneeling on the ground next to each other, both handcuffed and ten guards around us.

“Miss Kaldwin, or should I say Empress? Why come yourself to kill us and not send the good old royal protector Daddy?” Jindosh asked her in his devaluating but amused tone. “Because I didn't came here to kill you.” She marched up and down in front of us circling her sword casually. “I am here to make an offer.”

 And so we kept our lives and got the resources we needed.

And the price? The newly formed ethical review committee made a visit, confiscated a lot, gave us a lecture and we had to sign a contract, in which we agreed to follow the orders. They come and visit every month, heavily armed. Secondly the clockwork soldiers were now less expensive to create, but still not available for everyone. The militia models only for the imperial palace and important facilities and people that needed protection - us included. Empress Kaldwin had too much doubt in producing too many of them, because of the threat of reprogramming, so they wouldn't be able to handle them all. So every clockwork soldier as his own code and chip to track and manage from far away.

Jindosh and I speculated about the chances of reprogramming once. We both came to the conclusion it would be nothing but stupid. Everyone who has been on Delilahs side was either dead or immobilized. Jindosh and I were the ones who were lucky enough to have our lives, a nice mansion, our work, actually everything we need to live a happy life.

One year after we started working for Empress Kaldwin we were invited to a masked ball for the reopening of the Royal Conservatory. It was also the first time we left our mansion since the escape. Jindosh was wearing his brown suit, which he was always wearing, and I something similar. A brown suit with broad shoulders, a small waist and golden applications. It kinda looked like as if a clockwork soldier, Jindosh and a military uniform had a threesome. We both were wearing wooden bird skull masks and brown leather gloves.

 “Ready?” he asked me and turned his head to me, I nodded and we entered the ballroom. The room was crowded, as we walked through it, we were greeted with different moods. Some started talking behind their hands, some turned away, some even threatened us directly and some others simply nodded or shook our hands congratulating us. So we grabbed ourselves some wine and whiskey as soon as we were able to. We also met Empress Kalwin, Corvo and Sokolov and talked for a bit. The whole situation was awkward, but we managed it.

As the orchestra started to play a new song, my alcoholized self prevailed and pulled Jindosh to the middle of the hall where others were already dancing. “I hope waltzing is on of your secret talents.” I smirked. He bowed down in front of me with his left hand behind his back, before he grabbed my hand and waist and answered “My Lady, I lead.” and we submerged in the dancing crowd. It seemed to be one of his secret talents after all.

 Time passed in which we danced, drank and talked to various people, but we grew tired and decided to explore the Conservatory. Both equipped with clipboards, taking notes and discussing ideas when we came across something interesting, until we ended up on the fourth floor. With each floor more and more people disappeared, eventually we were alone.

 I removed my mask and leaned over the railing, the talking, laughing and screaming could still be heard, but muted. Jindosh appeared next to me and mimicked my movements. I glanced over to him while he wiped the sweat off his face with a cloth, he glanced back to me. And it hit me again.

He smells of whiskey, wood, aftershave and

berries. They way she descends into her work, analyzing, drawing and

his ability to combine even the smallest, most difficult tasks and parts.

He leaning back in his chair, massaging both of his temples after we had a heavy discussion again and

the sound of her bursting out laughing even after the biggest disagreements.

Between the tears that had been streaming down my face the entire speech, I exclaimed an “Yes” and I kissed him.

I finally felt home.

I published a newly made book with detailed descriptions and maps of all the areas and it functions of the brain I had discovered yet.

We had visitors more often, even Emily and Corvo were among them from time to time. Wehired some new and some old employees, but still kept our clockwork soldiers around.

In the evenings we mostly sat on the balcony, enjoying the view and each others company. We tried to live moments as much as we could, because we knew well enough, that things can change pretty fast, to bad and to even worse.
