AN OPEN LETTER to THE PRESIDENT & U.S. CONGRESS; STATE GOVERNORS & LEGISLATURES
Say NO to Loony-Bins: Immediate Action Required for Inpatient Psychiatric Care
2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
The current model of inpatient psychiatric care, which primarily focuses on safety and crisis stabilization, falls short in promoting sustained recovery. The prevalent emphasis on ultrashort lengths of stay often overlooks the need for comprehensive treatment plans.
A proposed model of care advocates for rapid diagnosis, goal-setting, and treatment modalities before initiating treatment, organized into three distinct phases: assessment, implementation, and resolution. This approach emphasizes individualized treatment and active patient involvement in treatment planning, addressing critical psychosocial aspects that are frequently neglected.
As we strive to reform the mental health care system, it's imperative to prioritize effective, recovery-oriented treatment strategies. This includes ensuring patient comfort and preferences are accommodated within reason. Considering patient preferences, like comfort items (such as safe stuffed animals; Share-Bears, if you will) and rescue medications (like melatonin,) is essential to upholding rigorous standards of care and safety.
Let's advocate for reforms that enhance patient-centered practices while adhering to established treatment guidelines and advancing recovery-oriented care.
Say no to “loony-bins;” those archaic relics that should be relegated to the distant past.

Mental illness in and of itself can already present myriad challenges for both the affected and their loved ones. Adding stigma, misunderstanding, and discrimination to the situation makes it even more complex. This is one of the many prevailing concerns we strive to address at A TOUCH OF GRACE INC.

"He knows what he wants but not what he needs!"
Who says what he wants and what he needs isn't one in the same? You? Who are you to tell him what he does and doesn't need?
This man is 240 years old he is a grown ass adult who knows what is best for himself. He isn't just making a random, impulsive decision. Do you not think he's had a real long, hard think about the situation? Obviously he has! Anyone would! This choice will shape what his life is going to be forever. Forever.
He isn't considering ascension frivolously, he isn't doing it purely as a spur of the moment mindless emotional reaction. It is a calculated decision keeping every important factor about his and his loved one's well-being and happiness in mind.
"He has trauma he can't make sound decisions!"
If you ever come into this house infantalizing the mentally ill like that again I'll start throwing hands. Suffering from C-PTSD does not mean he can't have rational thoughts. It doesn't mean he is an invalid child that needs someone to make all his decisions for him, "for his own good."
The ableism LEPT out with a ROAR on that take holee shit.

HALT Fentanyl Act is a horrible idea
Anybody feel like contacting their senators but can't narrow down a topic or what to say?
I suggest:
I am writing about the HALT Fentanyl Act, which passed the House and may come before you in the Senate. I cannot express how adamantly I oppose this bill. It is based on a total and complete lie - that there is no currently accepted medical value of fentanyl. Fentanyl is in actuality an important and frequently used pain medication in both human and veterinary medicine. Removing it from availability would detrimentally impact pain management in emergency, surgery, and chronic pain situations, and would cause harm to patients.
Instead of trying to deny actual medicine to medical personnel and patients, we should be supporting the accessibility of mental health and addiction recovery services and harm reduction programs such as supervised consumption sites, naloxone availability, needle exchanges, and public education.
------------------
And then because you had so much fun doing that, head over to www.5calls.org for more suggestions.

Redefining Prevention: Building Substance Use Strategies That Actually Work
The phrase “Just Say No” once stood at the forefront of America’s fight against drugs. It was catchy, blunt, and easy to plaster on school walls and billboards. But for many young people, it was also meaningless. It did not address what they were facing at home, online, or in their communities. It did not give them tools, support, or understanding. In truth, it was not prevention. It was…

There are so many problematic things in House, it's literally a big part of the show. Most of it doesn't bother me, but one thing that does make me annoyed every time it's brought up is how they treat Methadone when House takes it. Don't get me wrong, taking Methadone is not ideal, but they treat it like it's some insane trial drug that's an automatic death sentence. Maybe it wasn't the best option for House, I can't say either way. But Methadone is a part of harm reduction. Methadone saves lives!! Not everybody struggling with addiction is able to jump straight from actively using to getting completely sober. There is no shame in utilizing harm reduction tools. There is so much stigma around harm reduction in general, and it's just disheartening to see it portrayed so negatively in the media.
#As someone who works in the medical field and hopes to eventually become a doctor#It is so important that we change the stigma around harm reduction and stop making people feel ashamed of seeking it out#It genuinely does save lives#I know the show is satire so it's not just about this show it's about the fact that 99% of shows portray it this way#house md#house#housemd#greg house#gregory house#harm reduction#addiction#methadone

Piss and Punishment: How a Cup of Urine Became a Crime Scene
Let us dispense with the myth up front: You do not need to be caught with drugs in your hand, your car, or your pocket to get charged with a drug crime in the United States. Sometimes, all it takes is a trip to the bathroom and a plastic cup. In a country where freedom is allegedly a birthright, testing positive for an illegal substance in a urine test can result in jail time, a criminal charge,…
