Woe! Vapor e-cigs with no nicotine be upon ye! Your lungs must look like shriveled walnuts from those cancer sticks, this is an alternative to ease you off of smoking and it's non-toxic. I call it breathing therapy.
Is this that Hamon bullshit JiJi tried to teach me?
I dont smoke as much as I used to. Plus, if something bad happens, I'll have Josuke fix my lungs.
I dont want your stupid flavored air.

once saw a video making Tanjiro Demonslayer and Jonathan JoJo fight to the death and to even make that fight happen they had to make Jonathan act so out of character it's unreal
#if they met they'd immediately recognize one another as Pure Of Heart and do a headbutt greeting#then JoJo would teach Tanjiro the extendo-arm-yellow-sunlight-overdrive#and Tanjiro would teach JoJo to use the (P)LUCK sword in cool ways that make waves and flames appear#and they'd talk about how Dio and Michael Jackson tore their families apart and changed their lives forever#meanwhile Nezuko is giving Erina so many headpats#in the video they made JoJo try to kill Nezuko just because she's a demon#when actually he is the one person who understands that being turned undead doesn't change one's character#if the human soul was noble then the undead one is as well#now Joseph Joestar#he would've fought Tanjiro#but not because of Nezuko or anything#it's just because Tanjiro is Japanese

Giorno giovanna, Jonathan Joestars son.
is it just me who gets pissed when people call Giorno the son of Dio....
he is Jonathan's son, he's Jonathan's seed even after his body was taken over by the wicked Dio and planted inside a woman cruel and unkind as Giorno's mother and despite the way Giorno grew up he still grew up to have compassion.
in my mind that's part of the reason Giono's power has to do with plants and growth. over and over again in part one dio mentions how the more you fight Jonathan the stronger his skill gets the more he grows
the moment Jonathan showed Buford compassion the flowers on the ground began to spout. signifying Jonathan's true honor, noble and gentle nature.
Giorno, despite his hard ships grew into someone who wanted to better the world and show compassion. unlike dio, who choose to be wicked and destroy the life of the only people who showed him compassion.he has Jonathan's spirt and honor, the only thing giorno inherited was dios ability to be ruthless, giorno is compassionate yes, but in that he's willing to do whatever it takes for justice and peace to prevail
this is shown in episode 1 of golden wind as Jonathan mentioned allot he strived to be a true gentleman, Giorno sees the women being yelled at and stolen from by and man and steps in, yes he takes some of there money but this refences the kindness of George Joestar, the father of Jonathan. despite finding out Dios father was attempting to rob him and not save him he still tells the prison guard to free him and simply says "if i was in his circumstances i may have done the same thing." this also parallel to when Giorno saw the Mafioso running away injured trying not to be caught while wounded. Giorno lied to the people searching for the man as Giorno understood hardship due to his childhood.
infact feel free to argue, id like to believe Giorno developed blonde hair not from his connection to Dio but due to the Hamon energy inside of Jonathans body. Jonathan held onto hamon its all he had and thats why i think Giornos hair turned blonde once he turned 15, the story starts of when jonathan is around that age, when he first encountered dio, that's must be why Giornos hair manifested into a blonde color, i mean the name of the power is legit sunlight yellow overdrive...Giorno is truly Jonathan's son, there's also another thing when the way Giorno can breathe life into almost anything just how Jonathan uses Hamon with his breath. Giorno is seen allot with flower of a pink color, when Jonathan held onto the tree sprouting pink flowers that's when he had first discovered Hamon.
i think that the pink flowers signify that despite being planted by Dio, Giorno truly is Jonathans seed, his son. Jonathan has multiple son, but there's a reason Giorno is always seen with the pink flower, even Jonathans first born son, made from his own will isn't shown with the flowers. because of out of all of Jonathans children and descendants Giornos is the closest to him they will ever get.
okay this was a rant rant i had to post as all my interest in jojos flooded back, lemme know if you agree with what i said with a like please and thank youuuu <3

I wish to ask something a lot that i feel i should have asked before: How'd you feel Dio would feel/say or do when he was defeated and contained in his casket at the end of Part 1? Would he be proud of Johnathan? Would he despair and rage at his fate? Would he be aware or be asleep until awakening? If you ever spoke about this, let me know please. I so wish to see your further thoughts on him.
No, he wouldn't be proud of Jonathan; he'd likely be mildly annoyed by his uncooperativeness.
You frame the end of Part 1 as Dio being defeated but in truth Dio's defeat happens back when Jonathan sunlight-yellow-overdrives him, destroying Dio's body. Rather than acknowledging his "defeat," Dio goes into a radical form of denial and reframes his loss as "fate." Seen through that lens, Dio isn't beaten, instead it's simply Jonathan proving himself worthy as Dio's future body. So at the very end of Part 1, Dio has enacted Fate's endgame. It's just that Jonathan made things more complicated by resisting the inevitable and sinking the ship in the process.
The rest of your ask is headcanon territory, but what we do know is that in Part 3 Dio only mentions this time as a brief acknowledgement he wouldn't have survived as "only a head" under the Atlantic. Originally I misremembered his dialog here as showing uncharacteristic gratitude... but it turns out that it doesn't: "If it hadn't have been for [Jonathan's] energy, as unbelievably little as it was I couldn't have survived that century at sea." So even here Dio sounds annoyed, almost performatively, at his deceased brother's corpse for its inconvenient lack of energy. It's funny because some metas get built around the idea that Dio is a victim of PTSD following his deep sea interment, yet in truth there's no trace of this in the canon. So I think he likely slept, healed, chilled, and I imagine when you're immortal time moves a lot slower anyway. The endgame is eternity, right? The whole "fate" thing probably helps too because Dio's resurrection takes on the aura of inevitability; despair would require at the very least uncertainty.
fwiw I've seen people on several Japanese Jojo forums speculate that Dio ate Jonathan's head for sustenance, which always makes me laugh in spite of myself.
#concernedstick love#replies tag#jjba#dio brando#honestly Araki treats it as a non-event#but these are my thoughts anyway

SUNLIGHT YELLOW OVERDRIVE!!
So I had this idea for a furrified Jonathan for years and I finally had the audacity to finally make it. It was really hard trying to blend the Jojo artstyle with furry aesthetics but I think I nailed it with this piece. The only downside is that now I feel obligated to do the rest of the jojos at the very least, maybe the main antagonists and maybe even some other characters. Shit

Phantom Blood Liveblog JJBA ch.26-30

Yeah, back in those days, "ORA" hadn't been invented yet. If you wanted to beat a guy up with rapid punches, you had to yell something like "Sunlight Yellow Overdrive!" and hope he was unconscious before he could ask you what the hell that means.

Last time, Dio lured Jonathan and Zeppeli into a trap. They beat his zombie henchmen easily enough, but Dio's a lot stronger now than he was the last time Jonathan fought him. Hamon attacks will definitely kill Dio, but they depend on proper breathing and circulation of blood through the extremities. So when Dio freezes his own arms to block their strikes, it chills the good guys' own arms, disrupting the Hamon ripples.

Satisfied that his enemies are no match for him, Dio summons up two more zombies to finish the fight. These are Tarkus and Bruford, a pair of "legendary knights" who played an important role in British history. Well, not really. These guys are completely fictional, but Jonathan, Dio, and Zeppeli speak of them like they read about them in school.

Dio recounts their tragic backstory. The two knights were loyal to Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1587). In 1567, Mary was accused of killing her husband, Lord Darnley, and was forced to abdicate the Scottish throne and seek refuge in England with her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Queen Elizabeth spent the next twenty years moving her from one castle to another as she tried to figure out what to do with Mary. On the one hand, Mary had a claim to the throne of England, which made her a potential threat of Elizabeth's rule. On the other hand, killing Mary would draw the ire of Mary's supporters. In the end, Mary was implicated in an plot to assassinate Elizabeth, and she was tried and executed in 1587.
In the world of Phantom Blood, the armies of Tarkus and Bruford tried to free Mary in 1587, only for Elizabeth to use Mary as a hostage. She agreed to release Mary in exchange for Tarkus and Bruford's surrender. They agreed, even knowing they would be executed, but it was a trick. On the day of their execution, they were informed that Mary had already been beheaded the day before.

With their last words, Tarkus and Bruford cursed the world and their enemies, and Dio found that admirable. So when he set up shop in Windknights Lot, he decided to dig up their graves and reanimate their corpses. Unlike the other zombies we've seen, they're a lot stronger. Tarkus is a mountain of a man, while Bruford seems to use his long hair like tentacles. He tangles up Jonathan's right hand in his hair and uses it to suck Jonathan's blood. Jonathan can't even send Hamon through that hand because of the blood loss there.

So he just uses his left hand to destroy the hairs with Scarlet Overdrive. Everyone's all amazed that Jonathan would hit himself to keep fighting, but I kind of doubt that you can hurt yourself with your own Hamon energy. If Zeppeli could break a rock without hurting a frog, then I think this is a similar situation.

Another zombie tries to attack Jonathan during the battle, but Bruford destroys him, then asks Dio to allow him to fight Jonathan one on one. Dio agrees, but he's rather annoyed to find that Bruford still retains the warrior's pride he once had in life.

So Bruford commences his attack, using his hair to swing his sword at Jonathan.

So back in the day, when Windknights Lot was used as a training ground, there was a challenge known as "The 77 Rings". It's a 10-kilometer journey, but you have to defeat 77 opponents along the way, and with each one you beat you have to wear an iron ring. By the time you get to the end of the gauntlet, you have to fight their hardest guys while being weighed down with all those rings. Only five warriors ever completed the gauntlet. Four of them, including Tarkus, were big huge guys who were simply strong enough to muscle through it, but Bruford pulled it off by using his hair to swing weapons as a surprise attack.

Also, Bruford is so good at swimming that he can do it even while wearing his armor. When he and Jonathan end up in the water, Dio leaves the battlefield, thinking that Jonathan is as good as dead. Bruford puts away his sword, wanting to keep things fair at this stage. Down here, Jonathan can't use Hamon without air to breathe, so Bruford thinks this makes them even.

But Jonathan does the unexpected and swims down instead of heading toward the surface. He finds coal at the bottom, and reasons that there's pockets of air trapped there. And this works because.... it's like when your dog won't let go of something, so you have to pretend your giving it to him to make him let go? Yeah, I don't get it. I mean, just because there's gas trapped under those rocks doesn't mean it's breathable air.

But it works out for Jonathan, and he uses his breath to release a devastating Hamon attack, Underwater Turquoise Blue Overdrive. Hamon conducts well through water, so the range and power of the attack are devastating...

Or they would be, except Bruford managed to stay ahead of the attack until he reached the surface, so he only took a wound to his forehead. He's exhilirated by Jonathan's performance so far, and is grateful to face such a worthy adversary.
Meanwhile, Jonathan is astonished that a zombie would retain this sort of fighting spirit centuries after his death. "Flesh remembers?" Jonathan wonders. There's some foreshadowing for Part 3...

Bruford ties up Jonathan with his hair again, but this time it seems to grow and constrict around him, which is definitely not natural. Turns out, Bruford gained this ability when he became a zombie. It works by the way he can control the moisture in his hair, similar to the way Dio could rapidly evaporate the water in his arms to make them cold.
Now, somewhere around here, you might be wondering why Zeppeli isn't helping. Well, that's because he's still hurt from fighting Dio, and he needs to thaw out his arm so he can use Hamon to heal his injuries. Speedwagon has an idea, which basically amounts to pressing Zeppeli's arm against his torso to help warm it up. But it takes most of this arc to finish the process, so Jonathan's on his own.

Zeppeli was worried for Jonathan, since you need to use your hands to deploy Hamon attacks, but Jonathan gets one foot loose and blocks a strike from Bruford's sword. But this isn't a defense, it's an attack. Hamon conducts through metal, too, so Jonathan uses Metal Silver Overdrive to send the Ripple through the sword and into Bruford's arm.

Then he breaks loose and follows through with Sunlight Yellow Overdrive, and that's it for Bruford.

Bruford is in immense pain from the attack, but he vows to keep fighting... until he suddenly stops fighting and accepts defeat. Jonathan anticipated this, and Zeppeli realizes what Jonathan already figured out: When Bruford got hit with the Ripple, it restrored some of his humanity. Zombies don't feel pain, so the fact that Bruford felt anything meant he was becoming human again. And so, he stopped fighting, because he no longer saw Jonathan as his enemy. Flowers grow under Bruford, I guess because the Ripple energy? I don't know.

As he disintegrates, Bruford gives Jonathan his sword, which is inscribed with the word "Luck". Bruford writes a "P" on there with blood, making it say "Pluck" instead. He wishes Jonathan both on his quest, then turns into ash.

So you might be wondering what happened to Tarkus during all of this. Well, he just stayed on the sidelines this whole time, and now that Bruford is dead, he tramples Bruford's armor like he hates the guy. This kicks up a lot of debris, and Zeppeli has to use a Hamon shield to protect himself from it. So now it's Tarkus' turn to fight, and he doesn't seem to be as honorable as Bruford was...

BLCD Review: Old-fashioned Cupcake 2
Title: Old-fashion Cupcake with Capuccino (オールドファッションカップケーキwithカプチーノ)
Author/Artist: Sagan Sagan
Shop: CD + Manga
Release Date: 2021/12/22
Cast: Azakami Youhei x Okitsu Kazuyuki
Review Proper
What to say? Maybe it's the ADHD or the fact that I just came from two long BLCDs, but I'm always in a bad headspace when I listen to OFC. 😅 The second volume just went the second route of sequels: misunderstandings/insecurities featuring third-party appearances. I really get where Nozue-san's coming from and I'm not saying that his insecurities are invalid or whatever—it's just that he's the one who wanted to make their relationship low-key, but he was doing the worst job at it. 🙄And like what I've said in my review for volume 1, they don't have a big age gap, so this age gag with Nozue-san just annoys me. It doesn't help that they mention it every five pages or so. The more Sagan Sagan does it, the more Nozue-san's age sounds more like an excuse than a gag.
Yoneda Kou's spoiled me to the point that I can't accept anything less, it seems. 🤷Don't blame me for comparing, they also have a Togawa over there.
Anyway, that's enough of the plot.
Chil-chil 2023 was a lie. There is no way Okitsu placed fourth while Youhei placed 13th. If anything, they should be reversed—and that's coming from me, one of the biggest Okitsu whores on this site. But being an Okitsu simp also means I know how that man sounds like, and that man sounds awkward af in this tone. His Nozue-san is too slow and too light for him. Nozue-san does have moments where he'll explode in panic or anger, but considering how light and slow Okitsu's portrayal of him is, you would expect his explosions to be more on the lighter side, right? WRONG. HE GOES FULL JONATHAN JOESTAR TO DO IT LMAO
SUNLIGHT YELLOW OVERDRIVE!!!
I failed to mention in my first review that Nozue-san looks like Italy from Hetalia which is why I wanted NamiD for him... if he wasn't so problematic. Anyway, thankfully, we have a live-action. I very much prefer Kouhei Takeda over Okitsu as Nozue-san. HAHAHAHAHAHA
Youhei was the true MVP of this BLCD. I don't get how he placed so low. He was very stable, and his sex appeal shined throughout the CD. It kind of reminds me of Maeno's tbh. Chil-chil 2022 might've robbed him, but this man has earned his seat at the "tops you should look out for" table in my view. Congratulations!
The BLCD was pretty accurate to the manga. Read-alongs are indeed possible with it, but I will say that I had an issue with SuBLime's localization. For one thing, the second volume wasn't consistent with the first. Togawa calls Nozue-san "Mr. Nozue" in the first volume while he calls him "Nozue" in the second.😑I don't want to go on a long rant about honorifics, but when it comes to stories where age is an important factor, I am firm in my belief that the Japanese or a close English equivalent should be used. It's a Japanese story set in Japan; it's not your culture to localize. There, I said it.
Also,

Yes, we stan being redundant even when the original wasn't. 😌 I wouldn't be nit-picking if y'all just licensed Koi ga, SuBLime.
Still, please try supporting the official transla localization if you can. I can't say that the production was great because of Okitsu, but this actually placed fifth in the 2022 awards, so do with that info what you wish. If y'all want more office bl, then I shamelessly recommend Yoneda Kou's Doushitemo Furetakunai (Ishikawa Hideo x Nojima Kenji) and Soredemo, Yasashii Koi o Suru (Morikawa Toshiyuki x Nojima Hirofumi).

some interesting things i noticed when i read the untranslated jojo manga
not sure if anyone has written something like this post but i'll do it anyway.
you'll see small katakana or hiragana, mostly for vowels, at the end of a lot of characters' sentences.
the vampires' and pillar men's cries are written in romaji, like dio's famous "WRYYYYYYY" and esidisi's actual cry "HEEEEYYYYY".
i couldn't explain this well but some characters say "○○、××はよぉー" instead of "○○××は". like なんだ、アレはよォー! nanda, are wa yoo-! instead of なんだ、アレは! nanda, are wa!
the characters' lines sometimes have a fuck ton of dashes ー or tildes ~ (i'm not exaggerating) to elongate sounds and emphasize their expressions.
example of points 1, 3 and 4:
okuyasu: なんなんだァー そのマンガはよぉ~~~~~ッ "nan'nandaaa- sono manga wa yoo~~~~~!" (what the hell's with that manga page?!)
especially in parts 2-4, some of the weird insults the characters say are dated japanese words. examples include タコ "tako" (a bit different from the word for octopus), スカタン "sukatan", and 田ゴ作 "tagosaku". by the way, "sukatan" is associated with caesar zeppeli in japanese-speaking side of the jojo fandom.
the characters often use じゃあない jaanai or じゃあねー jaanee instead of just じゃない janai/じゃねー janee.
in part 4, tonio ends his sentences with particles partially or fully written in katakana like でス or デス and マス, not です and ます to make him seem to be a foreigner who hasn't mastered japanese. oddly enough, this speech quirk is absent in the poaching seashore one-shot. (please note that this, and the next point are also spotted in other japanese-language media.)
stands who can speak like humans, such as echoes act 3, sex pistols, gold experience requiem, whitesnake, etc. have hiragana in their speech replaced with katakana to make them feel non-human, sometimes just in their early appearances. example:
echoes act 3: ソイツノ「両腕」ヲ重クシタ 地面カラ指一本立テラレナイホドニネ !
"soitsu no 'ryouude' o omoku shita. jimen kara yubi ippon taterarenai hodo ni ne!" (i've made its hands heavier, so much that it won't be able to lift a finger from the ground!)
there are some exceptions such as the case with foo fighters, whose speech is written normally even in stand form.
there are quite a lot of words that use "english" furigana (kanji reading guides) written in katakana. some examples are:
in early part 3, "stand" is written as 幽波紋 yuuhamon with the furigana スタンド,
再起不能 saiki funou (sometimes read as "retired" リタイア),
星の白金 hoshi no hakkin (read as "star platinum" スター・プラチナ),
隠者の紫 inja no murasaki (read as "hermit purple" ハーミット・パープル),
黄金体験 ougon taiken (read as "gold experience" ゴールド・エクスペリエンス),
山吹色の波紋疾走 yamabuki-iro no hamon shissou (read as "sunlight yellow overdrive" サンライトイエローオーバードライブ),
厳正懲罰隔離房 gensei choubatsu kakuri-bou (read as "ultra security house unit" ウルトラセキュリティハウスユニット). yeah, the last two are the long ones.
on a related tangent: my blog name comes from the "japanese name" for heaven's door: 天国への扉 tengoku e no tobira.
...at least these are what i could recall for now. there might be more.

Chapter 6 of an ode to life is out-! Enjoy :D
Mike climbs sluggishly behind the wheel of his car, sitting there for a short silent moment allowing himself some respite before he could no longer hold close his mental floodgates and his mind began to holler and scream. He tries to sigh but instead makes a strange strangled gargle, like he was choking on mouth wash, forcing himself to move locked muscle's as he turned the key in the ignition pulling out from between the same two cars as the night before into the long strides of worming traffic, beginning his short drive back home. His own thoughts yelled through the honking of other people's horns, his heartbeat like ticking in his ears, there was now a timer on his reveal. No longer was it a matter of extreme procrastination but a clock ticking away until the hood was lifted from his head and he was hung Infront of a crowd of unfeeling faceless spectres. Not being prepared or ready barely scratched the surface of the boiling broth of emotions battling inside of him, his meeting with Eddie was completely unplanned, and entirely because mike hadn't been able to finish his drink quick enough, but from the look in Steve's eye's as they departed he knows the man wouldn't have listened to his desperate pleas to keep his dirty secret until he was brave enough. That feeling of dire helplessness hung in the car like an air freshener and clung to his body like sweat.
From the position of the dull sunlight through the smoggy sky Mike knew it was still early morning but the exact time was beyond him and it would be just his luck to be late to work as well. Chastising himself, mike knew he should've never left the house the night before, he shouldn't have walked into the bar to see corroded coffin, he should've sprinted out without caring for his drink, he shouldn't have fallen asleep on Eddie's sofa, everything that could've gone wrong last night did go wrong but he couldn't act like he didn't know the risks all along. He just needed his brain to shut down for a few heavenly moments, the consequence being it now worked in overdrive and was threatening to over heat.
Infuriation only swells inside him with each attempt to stab the key into the lock his shaking hands hindering him and making it a near impossible task, fighting the urge to hurl the keys across the street he slams his fist into the doorbell almost breaking it as it shrilly screams out in pain ,shoving his way past Jane the second she cracks open the door in his infuriation ,not hearing her grumbles of indignation . Speeding down the hall, almost tripping in his haste, he hurls himself into his bedroom grabbing the first clothes he see's , hissing as a stray pin embeds itself deep under his nail, ripping it out with gritted teeth. Running back down the hall he almost slips in his desperation to get to work on time , while still being presentable , slamming the bathroom door with a bang that ricochets in his wake.
He's walking out of the bathroom, his jacket between his rotting teeth, trying to thread an earing when he spots the clock on the wall ticking tauntingly and jeering at him with it's snide face, he had 10 minutes. Mike doesn't think he's ever moved so fast in his life as he did then, bolting out the house and practically throwing himself into his car. Jane had already left, slipping out the door and pattering down the steps while mike was in the shower, having gotten a lift from a sour pinch faced friend with wrinkled snarling lip like her bright yellow teeth were slices of lemon, who he'd only ever seen turn her full downturned lips into a remnant of a smile when picking jane up for work each morning. She didn't like mike very much, and that was the only thing the two of them had in common, so most mornings he kept out of her sight as her car trundled to a sputtering stop outside their house. Guilt tightened into a tangled messy knot he couldn't undo in his chest as his thoughts reverted back to jane, It was fine, he would make up for being such a dick to her later.

PSYCHO - JOHN MURPHY CHAPTER FIVE
"Pardon me, but I really don't remember asking you to follow me," Ainsley retorts with a roll of her eyes. Her eyes squint against the sunlight, and that's when she saw it. She holds her hand out to hold John from taking another step. "Shh! Do you see that?"
His line of sight follows hers, until they're both looking at a large, greenish, yellow cloud of fog heading for them. Something's wrong. She doesn't know how, or why, but she does know that fog isn't supposed to look like that.
"John, run!"
Without waiting for an answer, she grabs for his wrist and runs, leaping over fallen tree branches, and pushing through the brush. Her lungs work in overdrive to try and pull in more oxygen, while her heart hammers inside her chest, but she never once lets go of John Murphy. Even though, logically, if she did, then she could move faster, but she ignores that nagging part of her brain. She will not leave him behind.
Their heavy breathing is the only sound Ainsley can hear as she desperately looks around for an exit. She doesn't know how they're going to survive this, or what this even is. She won't give up this time. She nearly cries in relief when her eyes land on a cave up ahead.
"C'mon, in here!" Ainsley shouts, dragging him towards the cave, cascading them both in the darkness. She closes her eyes, expecting the fog to continue towards them, into the cave, but surprisingly it leaves it untouched.

What's Your Favorite Flower?
A little thing I wrote after considering what Eshra's answer would be. Takes place during the Bad Future™.

It’s such a minuscule thing, really, and in a normal world, a sane world, he never would have noticed it. Why would he? But the world isn’t normal, and it isn’t sane, and it hasn’t been for years, and so in this hellscape of shattered shades of gray all overlaid with a hellish red sky, the tiny splash of yellow catches his eye.
On feet as quiet as a cat’s paws, the yokai dips and darts across the torn up, rubble-strewn asphalt of… Bleecker Street, he thinks, near 11th, his dancer’s steps carrying him towards that incongruous dot of color. Every sense is in overdrive, like they have been since the invasion, but nothing trips his internal alarm, and he allows himself this brief moment of curiosity.
It’s a dandelion, he realizes after a frankly embarrassing number of seconds. Miraculously, the little yellow blossom is still clinging to life in this broken world, stubbornly reaching for the demonic sky and spreading its leaves to catch what little true sunlight might still filter through the red haze.
Eshra’s breath catches in his throat, an unexpected upsurge of emotion he has to swallow down hard, lest he risk making a noise and giving away his position. He reaches out almost without realizing it, his fingers stopping a hair’s breadth from the sunny petals. Somehow, even here, at the epicenter of the apocalypse, life endures. It persists, in spite of death, in spite of ruin, in spite of the krang.
The urge to protect the tiny flower, to uproot it and carry it somewhere safe, out of the reach of careless hound claws and crushing droid feet, is almost overwhelming. The fear of some mindless krang zombie shambling across this particular patch of broken concrete and heedlessly snuffing out this tiny spark of life has Eshra reaching for the dandelion again, for a moment intent on digging it up and spiriting it to safety. He nearly has his claws in the dirt before he stops himself, something that might be his conscience nipping at the edge of his mind. What right has he to impose his will on this precious, stubborn little thing? Why does he think he knows better? He draws his hand back, clutching it against his chest and instead simply taking a few cherished moments to just… look. Look and breathe and have just a minute’s worth of peace.
He goes back every day after that, each time terrified he won’t remember where the dandelion is, or worse, that something has happened to it while he’s been away. Each time, though, his fears are unfounded, and he finds his flower right where he left it, still as bright as the sun they can no longer see and still as insistent that it is going to live.
The day he spots a puff of white instead of the usual splash of yellow, Eshra’s heart jumps in his chest. Almost without care he hurries the last few dozen yards and crouches down next to the dandelion, which has turned from a sunburst blossom to a tiny cloud, and he's smiling a smile he’s forgotten he has. The yokai cups his hands around the seeded flower, a scrap of cloth in his fingers as a shield between the dandelion and the rest of the world. Then carefully, so very carefully, he blows on the puff, which shivers and quivers and at last releases its grip on its scores of minuscule seeds, allowing them to float safely into Eshra’s makeshift net.
After folding the cloth into a secure little sachet and tucking it into one of his supply pouches, Eshra finally lets himself touch his flower, a single delicate fingertip resting on the now bare seed head.
“Thank you,” he whispers, soft as the dandelion’s seeds, “for reminding me.”
