Hows the rest of the general iterator community taking the rot situation Pebs and Sig have going on in your au? It’s interesting how they still have a form of rot but the taboo thing actually got removed!

OOOH! So…the wider iterator populous is Not Happy with them. This situation basically divides ancient society, one camp is grovelling at Their Iterator’s feet begging them not to infect themselves, while the other camp is campaigning for Their Iterator to be killed/decommissioned before it can kill them. Needless to say, this creates a lot of tension between iterators and their citizens, tension that they REALLY don’t want. There are a couple iterators (Wind especially) who try to make work groups to help fix Pebbs and Sig, but in the back of their minds they know it’s futile. Hell, there are even a couple that want to join them! It kinda depends on an iterator-by-iterator basis, but the *general* consensus is they’re pissed off at them. God…not to go into CW and NSH’s relationship too deeply but they’re incredibly close (CW is older than Sig by like…50 cycles at most), and Wind is…horrified. He is very active in the politics and religion of his citizens, so he knows how BAD this has affected them, but he can’t help but sympathize with NSH. The whole reason they’re so close is because they play video games together and NSH listens to him bitch about how annoying his colony is! Sig knows more than anyone how complex Wind’s feelings are towards the ancients, and he knows it wasn’t personal, but…he just wants his friend back. And who knows, maybe he’ll be convinced to infect himself too. I mean, think about it, he’s already his citizens’ leader…might as well have *real* power over them, right?

As for the rot thing, I’m still trying to decide if Sig n Pebbs meant to create the rot or if it was just a side effect of the genome rewrite. On one hand, if they purposefully made the rot, it would help deter their citizens from going into their structures, thus decreasing the chance that their citizens could attempt to “fix” them, since the rot would kill them if they tried to go into their cans! However…it is a lot more tragic if they didn’t mean to create the rot, if it was just some unforeseen side effect that slowly destroys them from the inside out. A “punishment” for wanting free will, so to speak. I still gotta figure that part out!

Bruce was raised to drink tea in a proper, refined, and detailed way. Lois was raised with no regard for any ritual regarding hot water. Unless she's needing caffeine, Lois will go for a mug of hot water, honey, and lemon. She calls it tea. This goes against everything that Bruce knows.

In Lois' kitchen she has a set of justice league mugs. The Superman one she'd long taken to the Planet and it sits forever on her desk. The Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, and others are at the very back of the shelf, dusty and untouched. And then there is the Batman mug.

Bruce discovers the Batman mug one day while visiting her. It is stained and chipped and well used. He holds it in his hand. He puts it back on the shelf.

At home, Bruce has a Daily Planet thermos mug. When they've been working too long on their separate cases, when the distance between their cities is too great, Bruce will fill that thermos mug with hot water, honey, and lemon. It tastes like her.

Alfred finds it sacrilegious but he doesn't say a thing.

Character ask thing for Gray: 3, 4, 7 and 13!

3. What was the first thing you decided on, the character’s name, appearance, personality, or their role in the story?

Appearance! As much as Gray doesn’t like to acknowledge it, he has his roots in being a Spamton spin-off. His first distinguishing feature are the gray stripes in his hair, which is also coincidentally is how he (accidentally) got his name.

4. Which one of the four things did you struggle with the most?

To be honest, Gray is probably my easiest character to write. His personality has evolved and become more refined over time, and his role has done the same as he’s modulated into a full OC. I think it’s actually his name that I struggled with. I wasn’t initially sold on “Gray”, as I felt I could be a bit more unique, but it stuck and I’m not upset about it. His first name, however, I have beef with. While scrolling through a list of names, my eyes landed on “Sebastian”. It isn’t my favorite, but perhaps the ostentatious name suits him.

7. What is an aspect of their appearance that you like the most?

Aside from the obvious gray hair, my favorite thing about his appearance is that he’s ball jointed! My consistency in drawing him as such is considerably lacking, but he has posable-doll-like sockets to his mannequin body. Honorable mention to his nose, the one feature he inherited from Spamton that I could never get rid of.

13. Do you have a voice claim for the character? What do you imagine the character sounds like?

I’ve always been terrible at voice claims, but Gray does have a distinct voice in my head. If you’ll allow me to wax poetic about my favorite husband, I have a short anecdote that adequately answers this question. Years ago, beloved friend @kowtownart said she heard the song Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell on the radio while at work and thought it sounded like Gray. I don’t personally think he sounds like Glen Campbell, but I was touched by the idea that Lee envisioned him as having a gentle, mid-tone voice with an Appalachian accent. (Which, he definitely has a gentle, mid-tone voice… but perhaps a more standardized American accent, potentially Northeast regional leaning.)

That was the long way to say that Gray sounds however you’d imagine a comforting, kind hearted, gentle older man to sound.

What do you think motivates Neroon in his sharper or softer moments? (Also, hi! I'm newish to B5 fandom and have enjoyed yours and fisularae's works. ❤)

i had to think on this for bit, so apologies for the wait! this is all my own view on things so take it with a grain of salt but i think what is interesting to me about neroon is that as much as anger and hatred motivates him in his worst moments, he's also very motivated by a love for his people and for minbar and minbari culture. and this both drives his xenophobia (the classic minbari superiority complex), but it's also what allows him to grow too. i think something delenn and neroon have in common is they both really do believe in minbari ideals, neroon is just much more cynical and, imo, more aware of the faults of their people, including his own caste. it's those minbari ideals that make him stop short of killing marcus during the denn'shah because he recognises those ideals in marcus. just like he recognises a 'minbariness' about sinclair in season 1. so he is capable of moving past his hatred of humans once he actually spends time around them and is like, hey these guys aren't actually so different from us??? in the past ive liked to call him the reverse picard, because in trek picard loves to compliment aliens by telling them how human they are, while neroon compliments humans by telling them how minbari they are. it's still xenophobic but baby steps! he's learning! and i think it's that capacity for self-reflection and going 'oh I am not measuring up to these ideals :/' which leaves room for growth and for him to learn and is present in those softer moments we see of him, with sinclair, marcus and delenn later on. he also seems to have a sense of humour about himself and be able to laugh at his own foibles and mistakes which again i think displays his capacity for growth

it's also interesting that in g17 neroon doesn't go after delenn just because he hates her and is following orders to get rid of her, he genuinely seems to be worried about the way she is consolidating power and placing her at the centre of this weird religious prophecy, and he's not wrong to be worried! none of his past experiences with delenn have given him a reason to trust her. the problem isn't his criticism of her, it's him deciding the solution is to kill her, lol. so like there again he is being motivated to do very bad things because of his own convictions. and in the end he doesn't kill her because he is confronted by the fact that this act would be in direct violation of his minbari ideals and convictions and he is confronted with that by a human. like i honestly feel like he walked away from the denn'shah utterly humiliated and shamed on top of everything else lol and you can see that in the way he is when he first speaks to marcus in medbay afterwards and allows himself a lil vulnerability

i also think a big driver for his sharpest moments is his anger, both with the religious caste generally because of the war (and, imo, probably other stuff. in rbl lennier talks about there being slights and grudges that the grey council suppressed so i get the vibe the warrior caste had been waiting for a long time to let out some of that repressed rage on the religious caste), and delenn. like he clearly doesn't like her when he shows up in legacies, but after legacies he has a reason to hate her and carry a grudge, and i think that colours all his dealings with her from that point forward. i mean, he takes so much joy in reaming her out in all alone in the night. he is getting one over on his most hated enemy!!! he's having a great time!!! so like, yeah, i think there is a very vengeful aspect to his character (tbh i think all the minbari have issues with grudges and vengeance... like the earth-minbari war is a prime example of how unhinged they are) but he is capable of overcoming that given time and the occasional intervention of a brave and honourable human here and there

Just that sweet sweet angst and dramatic irony + the fluff potential always has me HOOKED, as rare as it is. Thats probably why it shows up in my fics a disproportionate amount lol

we meet him when he’s 17, 18. we meet him when he’s awkward, and shy, but brave enough to stand up for himself when it really comes down to it. we meet him using big words and sarcasm and being…well, davey.

who we don’t meet is david at seven. we don’t meet the kid whose first language is hebrew, and doesn’t know enough of english to call it a second. we don’t meet the david who reads the dictionary in the dark when he’s supposed to be asleep because god, some stupid kid made fun of how he didn’t understand a word in class, and his cheeks are still burning. we don’t meet the boy who can’t read tones or cues for the life of him, who can’t tell jokes from insults, who has stuck his foot in his mouth too many goddamn times because he couldn’t take a hint.

and teachers tell him how he’s so smart and such a fast learner, and he doesn’t tell them how many hours he stayed up because he didn’t. get. it. sarah says she wishes she could be like him, and what he doesn’t say is he wishes he could be anything but him. his brain moves a mile a minute, but it’s still too slow, still not enough, still thinking in the wrong language, still two steps behind, still missing the punchline, and david isn’t good enough, either.

but then he’s davey. and davey is funny. davey is smart. davey isn’t two steps behind, but two steps ahead. and he knows that it’s not because he’s special, or good, but only because he was lucky enough to be david first, and davey second, but sometimes, at night, he lies in bed and wishes. he pretends that it WAS because he was enough. that he WAS everything race and crutchie told him he was. just as funny and weird and smart as jack claimed him to be.

and maybe he was a liar.

but at least he understood that.

ngl i don't have many other hcs from the top of my head and idk if this really counts has a headcanon but i like that 2016 revival macavity's design parallels tugger's design. i think it's interesting. and also makes me think that if macavity used to be part of the jellicles he could have been very similar to tugger in terms of like. personality or smth. idk just spitballing

1st Canadian anon here! youre so welcome for the advice! In terms of other cities, maybe check in the maritimes....maybe St. John's in Newfoundland and Labrador or Halifax in Nova Scotia! I'm not too familiar with this region tho. Not as expensive as Vancouver or Toronto, but the cost of living is still bad. There is also Calgary, Alberta, in the west. Also not as expensive as Toronto and Vancouver.

As for Québec, there's been a lot of controversy in the government about people moving there who cannot speak french. Since English colonization and bc of current tourism, everyone there speaks English and there are a lot of predominantly English-speaking areas. However, the government is trying to make newcomers (kids in school for example) learn french and make Québec more french focused to preserve the language and it might be a bit difficult to get medical and other government services in English if things keep going the way they do. I'm all for prioritizing our language but these services are really important to be accessible for everyone. Right now, it's alright though.

Overall, as long as you try, people will appreciate you. It's similar to European tourism where they just want their language to be respected by visitors. So living in a large city or in an English area is ur best bet for Québec, but it's still a good idea to know some french, especially for a job. It would be very difficult (near impossible) to get a job if you don't know french, unless youre in a VERY english area. But pls dont rely on me for this info lol for all i know there might be some opportunities! Hope this helps, whether you decide to move or visit 🥰🥰
