Kevin procrastinated until the last minute. Maybe if he was ten minutes late, they wouldn't wait for him. Maybe the boys would be disappointed in him, call him an asshole, and go back to their room. Maybe if he runs away now, he won't feel so shitty…?

He pushes open the door and enters the hallway of the orphanage. A faint air conditioner blows a chill somewhere under the ceiling, but the cold air is warm, never quite sinking down to the shoulders of those who enter. Kevin is the only visitor in the whole hall.

Three more people come out into the hall with excessive noise, and Kevin realizes that they are his “children”. No, they're not screaming or running. They're just…walking, and it's noisy. Accompanied by the director of the orphanage, a very tired woman in her forties, dressed as formally and incongruously as Kevin himself. His “kids” are twin boys, blondes with a dozen priors at the station. Identical. Pale. Sullen. Kevin already feels a phantom migraine trying to find anything different about them….

—Kevin Day? — The principal asks hopefully. The twins synchronously freeze next to her and look at Kevin with disbelief.

He had a chance to say no, and retreat, citing that he'd gotten the wrong door and was actually looking for a new hipster coffee shop.

He had his chance.

—Yeah, that's me.

He didn't take it.

The principal invited him into her office. He felt uncomfortable in the center of this procession - “the director-he-twins”. In the office, this feeling was exacerbated by the confined space and small area. Kevin felt like he was being trapped.

—This is Andrew and Aaron. - The principal introduced the boys. She made a hand gesture once - apparently she wasn't sure which one was which. Kevin might have taken it leniently if she hadn't been working here for ten years.

—Hi. — Kevin said. — My name is Kevin.

The principal shifted her gaze to her students.

—He wants to take you in.

The boys looked at Kevin with displeased looks.

—What if we don't want to? — One of them suddenly spoke up. His voice was high, unpleasantly thin, and it sounded to Kevin as if he were speaking in a high-pitched voice.

—Then I'll go home and continue doing my boring grown-up things. — Kevin answered him simply, refraining from shrugging his shoulders.

The blond boy stared at him like a cockroach - with hatred and a “you better not open your mouth” expression on his face. The principal confirmed Kevin's words. The second boy elbowed the first boy in the side and hissed “shut up!”

—Okay, — the first boy suddenly agreed, —we'll go. But you tell him about us.

— Maybe you'd like to meet Kevin yourself. — suggested the principal.

— No, — the boy said. He took his brother's hand and led him out into the corridor, closing the door noisily.

Kevin was left alone with the principal.

—They're complicated.

I've noticed.

—They're tough.

Especially the first one.

—But they're kind at heart.

Yeah, they are.

—And they don't settle so quickly.

Of course not!

—Kevin, look, they're not bad. They had a rough childhood — their mother abandoned them, they were beaten and abused in foster care. It's not their fault. The rudeness is their defense mechanism.

—I agree. — Kevin exhaled, and he heard his voice as if from far away. Did he even say that?

—If you give them a chance…

—I agree. — Kevin repeated louder, just to keep her quiet. — What do you need to fill out?

An hour later, he found himself in the hallway. Andrew and Aaron were sitting in plastic chairs away from the principal's office. One of the twins had dozed off on the other's shoulder.

—We don't like you. — shared the one guarding his brother's sleep. — But the orphanage is much worse than you will be. Don't bother us and you'll be happy.

—All right. Respect my place and my stuff, and you'll be happy.

The blond frowned. That meant he was accepting the rules. Well, Kevin hoped it meant exactly what he thought it meant.

—What's your name?

—Take a guess.

—Which one of you is the oldest?

—Guess. — The boy wouldn't give up.

—How old are you?

—You didn't understand the first two times? — The kid got angry.

Kevin covered his eyes with the palm of his hand and pressed his eyelids shut. This kid was starting to give him a headache.

—You're Andrew, the oldest. You're about thirteen years old. — Kevin suggested, not really expecting anything.

The boy rounded his eyes. Kevin's answer knocked him off his game.

—That's right. - he said grudgingly. — Except for the last one. We're fourteen.

—Do you need to pack? Do you need help?

—What kind of stuff? — Andrew grumbled wryly. — We're in an orphanage.

—Then… shall we go? — Day asked.

Andrew patted his brother on the shoulder and nodded toward the exit when Aaron blinked sleepily.

- No matter who will win, there will be a lot of changes in strategic trajectories for the whole world, it might negatively impact most of the humans (60%) in the entire world during a few weeks.
