Christmas Movie Recommendation

I know I don’t normally do movie recs, but I’m making another exception for this movie:

Mrs. Santa Claus (1996)

Played by the late great Angela Lansbury, Mrs. Claus is tired of being ignored by Santa, and decides to go and travel, ending up in 1910 New York. There she ends up getting involved in the Suffragette movement, among other things. 

I’d watched this movie as a kid on VHS, though it was originally a made-for-television musical. And honestly, it still holds up having just found it again and re-watched it. The songs are by Jerry Herman who also composed for the Hello Dolly!, Mame, and La Cage aux Folles. The choreography is by Rob Marshall who directed Chicago (2002), Nine, Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides, Into The Woods (2014), and Mary Poppins Returns. There’s a couple Broadway stars involved as well: Terrance Mann who plays a delightfully hammy Tim Curry-esque villain, and Rosalind Harris from Fiddler on the Roof. 

It’s a really cute movie, not too long, and honestly I think it deserves more notice. Like, seriously, the fact that it’s so unknown is wild! Someone put it up for free on youtube, so if you’ve got an hour and a half to spare for a wholesome Christmas musical, check it out.
