Kai: That’s… Not good. Are you going back?

Taryn: I don’t have a choice.

Kai: You do, you’re just being stubborn. 

Taryn: I don’t think I want kids, Kai. They smell kinda funny and are really mean.

Kai: I’m sure we were like that.

Taryn: You were. I was perfect and then I grew up.

Kai: Don’t say that!

Taryn: They said I’m gonna turn into a hag. They aren’t wrong about that.

Kai: I think you’ve had a rough day and maybe some sleep will help.

Taryn: I could disappear. No one would notice-

Kai: Stop it! 

Taryn: My life is over! 

Kai: It could be worse, you could be me.

Taryn: Now you stop that!

Kai: It’s the truth! 

Taryn: Sure you had a hiccup but what could possibly be worse?

Kai: Taryn?

Taryn: What?

Kai: I like men.

Taryn: Oh! Ohhhhhh.

Kai: Is that a bad oh or a good oh?

Taryn: A makes sense oh. 

Kai: What?!

Taryn: You’ve never brought a girl home.

Kai: Fair point. Are you mad at me?

Taryn: Why would I be? I mean I can’t imagine what it’s like to hold in something like that for so long. When did you know?

Kai: [ small chuckle ] Well, it’s always been there but I knew as soon as I kissed Atlas. 

Taryn: Oh! OHHH.

Kai: Good?? Bad??

Taryn: First of all, I am so sorry, if I had known I would have kept him at a distance.

Kai: No, don’t apologize for that. If anything it should be me that’s sorry for acting like such a thumb.

Taryn: A thumb? Like from Spy Kids?

Kai: Yup.

Taryn: Silly. So… Have you.. Spoken to him?

Kai: [ shakes head ] The last time I did, I said a lot of stupid things and he was pissed alright. 

Taryn: Ah.

Kai: He likes you a lot. Extremely defensive over you, like he’ll take a verbal punch anytime but when you’re mentioned? It’s lights out.

Taryn: Kai, you really shouldn’t have told me that.

Kai: I just thought you should know, in case you felt like you were the issue. A confidence booster really. 

Taryn: That’s terrible.

Kai: Well I’m not great at pep talks!

Taryn: We’ll work on it.

Taryn: If he doesn’t have you or Frances then I hope he’s doing okay.

Kai: It’s hard to say. Dan’s all that’s left but she’s never liked controlling anyone so what do you do? 

Taryn: Like being caught between a rock and a hard place.

Kai: Exactly. Last time this happened, he disappeared for about a month before Frances could find him. Gave him an ultimatum.

Taryn: [ sighs ] Please keep me updated. Try to find out anything.

Kai: I will.

he’ll never tell. In the moonlight, he looks like a vanishing horse.

In the daylight: a dog.

He has nothing to say about the question he wants to ask.

Summary: The guy’s car is that sort of vehicle that can fit few people but a lot of life garbage if you’re running away. He’s been shuttling between his house and the car for so long Wei Ying’s tea has gone cold and irrelevant. Everything seems insignificant now that Wei Ying has a human neighbour. And the guy just absolutely had to buy the house right next to Wei Ying's. Kay's comments: Ah, this story was so soft in its sadness. Really hard to describe what it made me feel, but I'm feeling a lot of it. Just. The feeling of isolation of Wei Ying living all alone with only his cat named Donkey until one day, Lan Zhan moves into the house across from his and despite how Wei Ying has isolated himself, he just can't help himself and pester Lan Zhan and look out for him. Both of them a broken in their own ways, but their broken pieces fit together perfectly. Excerpt: "I need to go to a pharmacy to get some first aid supplies," Lan Zhan says. "I forgot the bird seeds," Wei Ying beams at him, seeing through Lan Zhan’s adorably crude lies. "You go there and I'll go back." "You go first. I will wait here." "Nononono, we'll both go. Take the keys." The look on Lan Zhan's face when he comes back to the car with lube and Wei Ying is holding two rabbits in a little box is worth every single day Wei Ying has spent alone in a dilapidated house on the edge of the world and his sanity. "Wei Ying." "First aid supplies." They go home.

Kai: No, I think there’s something wrong with me.

Alex: I’m not following, do you need to go to the hospital?

Kai: Not that kind of wrong. I feel like such a phony and the one time I’m honest, it backfires. So what’s the point of pretending? 

Alex: Kai, Does it ever get tiring wearing a mask? 

Kai: Always.

Kai: Yeah, people are gonna start showing up any minute.

Alex: Do you wanna go back to my place?

Kai: I don’t think that would be smart.

Alex: I thought we were moving past the whole not being ourselves thing.

Kai: I- My head wasn’t in the right place. 

Alex: So was this just a one time thing? 

Kai: Alex, what did you think would happen when you gave me your number? 

Alex: I don’t know.

Kai: When we first met, you left abruptly and then you suddenly seemed so interested, it felt superficial. I assumed this was something you do with people you hook up with. 

Alex: People I hook up with… Riiight. I didn’t realize your shame made you such a judgemental person. 

Kai: Well to be honest, you’re a complete stranger!

Alex: Wow. Incredible. You really are something else.   

Kai: I’m sorry-Alex: Whatever. Look, I’m comfortable in myself and I don’t need someone who has such a level of distrust in others to tell me who I am. Also, Kai, I had some personal things I was dealing with that day but you were the highlight of such a shitty day. My apologies if my excitement came off as “superficial.”
