#That’s what I get for expecting the average BL fan to not be an actual brainlet wojak irl tho
Ngl kinda weird to me that other vidya movies can play fast n loose with character backstories/timelines and that’s just fine but Borderlands does it and suddenly it’s a problem

Can you please help me with understanding some points?
Today I saw a viminer that was clearly a Jimin anti and I’m so pissed that people claim to stan him just for a clout or because they believe in certain narrative that they have made up by themselves.
Their behaviour is truly hypocritical - she said Jimin has always been careful about lgbt community and v has been always loud about it - “Taehyung gifted Jimin “woman” clothes, so he started accepting himself”. But she never mentions that Jimin called out V for saying that man shouldn’t check selfies, called out members saying that he didnt get why they are so upset about wearing dresses.
But when in one ask someone said that V was being controversial about lgbt - “he called out Jimin for liking man, laughing at his attitude to Jungkook” that girl defended him🤡 like V has always been supportive more than Jimin
Tell me am I right or wrong? Do we have a masterpost about Jimin supporting lgbt or should we make one?
Ok I get this, and it's not like we can ever expect these people to paint him in a good light. The funny thing about how stans use idols or celebs in general talking about or engaging with queer media as proof that they're queer is funny because when you look at someone who's obsessed with queer media or at least wants us to think that they are, it's the straightest person ever. Enjoying a certain type of media doesn't mean you're part of that community, most times queer people engage with and consume straight media more, it doesn't make them less queer.
And I don't understand why we have to prove that Jimin supports LGBTQ.. is he getting an award for his support or does his support cause any significant change in the community?
Also if you ask the average kpop Stan who isn't an army that can't stand the idea of Tae with a woman so they try to convince themselves he's gay because he posted about a wong Kai war movie, to list 10 idols they think could be queer or idols who have helped to break gender stereotypes, Jimin will be the only BTS member on that list.
It reminds me of how armys diagnosed jk as autistic and call him "babygirl" when he would never be the first Idol anyone would think of when they hear the term "babygirl", also how years ago armys and Taehyung stans swore Tae was "unique" because he acted "weird". Everyone wants their fave to be "not like the others", stans and their neverending quest to prove that idols are queer or autistic because they think it makes them unique or because they want to see themselves so bad in the idol even if that idol is anything but.
I think we are past the era when we think someone is gay because they post about gay media. Most BL fans are literally straight women. I'm attracted to women and I consume more straight and mlm media than wlw, it doesn't change my sexuality.
A lot of people think Jimin is queer for reasons that are deeper than these.
Until a few years ago when certain BTS members discovered what the fans wanted to see and what was accepted by their international fanbase, they would literally say the most insensitive things to Jimin about his masculinity, Tae included. That man discovered that fans eat these things up and he's not looked back ever since.
Like I'm not accusing anyone of anything but I just don't think Tae is as close as he is with those wooga squad men and then he's actually queer, or that he could even push anyone to self acceptance. That's like the ultimate "bro club", they are misogynistic and I've heard homophobic too (although I don't know how true that is, I think people just say they are because they give that vibe and I get it). If he's actually queer and oh so forward thinking then being friends with people like that isn't a sign of self acceptance at all in my opinion or maybe wooga squad members are good people in private lol.
I don't think anyone should be making a post to prove that Jimin supports the queer community because he's the last idol that needs that defense.
Jimin has been subjected to homophobi* and transphobi* for years because he's always been himself but of course Tae is more progressive simply because he watched a gay Netflix movie and posted about it on Instagram 😭

Fanfic as a whole experience is in many ways superior to published fic. For instance, AFAIK, books don't come with tags listing the tropes and warnings. The community around it, the rec sites, the shared experience of loving something. Also, the ending isn't quite the same. You know that feeling when you read a good book and you get to the end and there's no sequel, no nothing? Never get that quite the same with fanfiction, there's always slightly more of the universe to explore. I don't think I've ever seen anyone claim that the average standard of writing is higher, but then I don't get out much.
--
See, this is exactly what people were talking about.
Books don't typically come with AO3-style tags, but it's not unheard of for indie presses to do that. They can't do it on Amazon because that will tend to get them taken down. You'd find that info on their own sites, perhaps. There are also book review sites that warn extensively.
Lots of genres don't operate on the same tropes popular AO3 fics do, but I'd expect to see relatively similar understandings of what's worth tagging from Romance, especially indie queer romance.
You can also often tell the level of darkness/sex/whatever from being familiar with a particular publishing niche the same way a lot of AO3 fics will conform to approximately the same expectations. There's an art to interpreting blurbs and marketing copy. If you read a lot of similar books, you can often guess a lot even without specific tags.
There are absolutely shittons of communities around reading books. Many of them are centered around some very specific genre or marketing niche. Big book blogs form their own little communities.
Plenty of genres are given to series. I get to the end of book 1 of some endless mystery series, and I go on to read books 2-30. Sure, at some point, I'll run out of that series, that author, that author's imitators, etc., but I'll also very quickly run out of fic in anything but a juggernaut fandom.
--
If someone wanted a feeling more or less like fandom but with original work, I'd suggest joining some obsessive mystery novel nerd circles, finding Romance fans, or diving into the world of "original m/m", which is basically English language BL/danmei novels.
If you want something as queer as AO3 in similar ways, only the last of those is likely to provide, but if you want other types of fic experiences, I definitely think both Mystery and Romance have that 'community of fans' vibe. (SFF certainly can, but I find it to be more of a crapshoot for various reasons. I'd be more inclined to join the fandom for a specific book than deal with the community overall.)
There are tons of clubs and facebook groups and things where people share recs and discuss their latest reads. There are book review blogs like Smart Bitches, Trashy Books. There are whole bookstores and literary conferences devoted to just one or another of the genres of genre fiction.
--
If one just likes fic better no matter what, fair enough!
There's nothing wrong with preferring fic or preferring original. But a lot of things are actually present with both if you look in the right places.
I love AO3 community, but I very much do not love FFN, Wattpad, Quotev, or Spacebattles community. It's all about knowing fannish-but-not-fanfic spaces for books the same way one knows spaces for fic.

Wedding Impossible ep 1 was cute. Jury is still out on how good the show will actually be. I'm just glad to see a gay character being proactive in the story. BLs just aren't cutting it with their characters and stories anymore.
As a lover of analyzing things and people I would love to see how far they take the gay relationship. ATM I'm happy if the guy has a name, a personality and if they just touch lovingly a little. I don't expect the show to have a kiss on the lips. And I am interested in seeing how people (kdrama fans) react to this.
I love that Do Han is taking a step to secure his life as he wants it and there seems to be some angry in him. Love that. Ah Jeong is a lot of fun, she is so uppity and ready to throw a punch. Love an action girl. I still have hopes for Ji Han. IDK if the writers would make him homophobic for the drama or what. He is just petulant and the way the grandfather said: Ji Han is his blemish. What does that mean sir? WHat the hell does that mean?!
So I'm getting that Do Han and Ji Han are illegitimate sons of the CEO Grandfather's daughter and the rest are legitimate but I don't know who their parents are. If anyone knows, let me know. I would think the grandfather would hate Do Han and Ji Han the most since they are illegitimate but he seems to like them the most. Maybe it's because they are the only ones who haven't messed up.
So far the show has been average. Nothing special other than the SML being gay. But Kdramas have been surprising with how well they execute common plots and tropes lately so maybe that's what's happening.

Yuri!!! On Ice
Tumblr media
I low-key love figure skating. Wait, you might say, your last Shelf Life post was essentially nu-metal nostalgia, how does that track? When I saw Yuri!!! On Ice get a favorable comment from Johnny Weir on the back of the box?? Johnny Weir is a badass. Sold.
I'm not really sure what I expected from this show, but I didn't really expect this. And that's not a knock. After only a couple of episodes, I was literally ready to anoint Yuri!!! On Ice as my all time favorite anime.
That first skating sequence where Yuri Katsuki did Victor Nakibarov's program? Tears. So good. So, so good. The animation of the skating sequences is gorgeous, which really should be no surprise coming from MAPPA. (I just found out that MAPPA was founded by one of the co-founders of Madhouse. The more you know.) The opening theme just sets the stage for how just beautifully animated the skating is, you can tell that the animators really fell in love with the sport as they worked. The OVA, "Welcome to the Madness" is some of the most incredible animation I've ever seen.
But what I wasn't expecting was the tone of the show--it wasn't the kind of melodrama that the sport of figure skating is known for. There was a surprising amount of comedy, from Yuri's "loser" characterization, to the three mischievous daughters of the local rink proprietors... they even did a kind of clever reversal of the "naked girl suddenly appears in your bath" trope when Victor showed up at Yuri's family's hot spring! The show then settles into this kind of "feel-good" sports anime.
But the middle of the series was kind of... average? I so very rarely ever say this: I think it could have been longer. I feel like we didn't get enough of the training aspect. Figure Skating training is brutal. It's not that they really left anything out, but it didn't have time to breathe. It just seemed like Yuri's transformation from choke-artist to world-class skater just sort of happened? I think they missed an opportunity. Having 26 episodes to flesh out the space between competitions would have also helped the charming supporting cast.
I will say, though, it was kind of nice to not have a villain. All the skaters, even Yurio the frenemy, even the brash King JJ, they all more or less got along and wanted each other to ultimately find success.
There is a point of contention out there about how "gay" this show actually is. I do understand how some might be disappointed that Yuri and Victor's relationship was not explicitly defined, that it's not true BL or yaoi. But it's also not a show that "only horny fan girls care about." This isn't a lightweight show, and it's awfully reductive to say that some ambiguity of a relationship status reduces it's effect as positive representation. There's an incredible depth of emotion on display, the empathy and compassion in the face of failure showing us that romantic love and winning medals won't solve our problems. Victor and Yuri's relationship is but one facet of their complex lives and not the all-consuming focus. Not to say that it is perfect, that it coudn't be improved, or that you don't have the right to be disappointed, but I think it still is powerful.
I can't say that Yuri!!! on ice quite cracks my personal S-tier of anime, mostly due to the underdeveloped middle of the series, but it is very comfortably in the A+ tier. Shelf worthy!

A while back, i posted how i didn't like big height differences between members of a ship. This is what i meant:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this, I'm fine with:
Tumblr media
Even though I prefer this:
Tumblr media
I wanted to dig out more examples of height differences that I disliked, from my manga collection...but then I realized that I was unlikely to have bought manga like that. lol
I know that a lot of mangaka choose contrasting character designs for a couple, to make interesting, every composition they're together, which is expected to be often. But sometimes I don't like how a lot of Shoujo manga makes the leading lady so short, baby faced, and childlike, while the male love interest is so masculinized and seemingly aged-up, that the excessive contrast makes the heroine seem infantilized. Maybe that's not the intention of the mangaka, and it's certainly not going to be the implication that other people interpret. But for me, I can't help seeing those symbolic signifiers and reading it as "infantilized heroine", especially since I've so often seen such heroines turned into "damsels in distress" or infantilized in her personality or in her relation to the leading man. And it's usually just so the leading man can seem so much more masculine and reassuring. And by "reassuring", I mean some of these leading men just act like guard dogs, parental, jealous, and/or basically a big mountain for the leading lady to get smothered with. (I flipped through Happy Hustle High today, years after I had last read it, and I was reminded how often the leading man just smothers the heroine in his arms, and jealously pulls her away from other guys that he perceives as romantic threats.) I'm not a big fan of this imbalanced power dynamic, and I can't help expecting it, whenever I see a couple with such excessive height differences.
My problem being more in the character design reflecting that expection, more than in my problem being in the height difference alone, is proven by me shipping Ichiruki. I don't care that Rukia is so short and Ichigo is so tall. In fact, it's kind of funny that way. But because the power dynamic between them is so blatantly level, I don't have to see their height differences as a signifier of power imbalance. She has authority as his mentor figure in the ways of being a Shinigami and a warrior experienced on a higher level than his average life demanded. He's the gutsy protagonist who will stand up to her when he disagrees or spend entire story arcs, rescuing her. And as the series goes on, they learn from each other equally and very quickly become peers. They have a very equal power balance. Because of that, I don't have to interpret their height differences as a signifier of a power imbalance.
But that's not often the case, especially in Shoujo manga.
And actually, I see it a lot in BL manga too. Often, an uke is designed so bishounen, that sometimes he'll look like a tiny child next to the overly macho-ified seme, and the bishounen uke is often additionally treated as this fragile "damsel in distress" to protect. Sometimes the uke looks so childlike compared to the seme, that the narrative will have to explicitly state or prove that the bishounen uke is 18 or old enough for college, so we don't have to feel like the couple is problematic, because of their contrasting appearances. I like bishounen and pretty characters, but when the partner to the bishounen is drawn so relatively overly masculine, the contrast becomes too much for me, especially when a series gets lemony. I'll put up with such extreme pairings of character designs (regardless of orientation) if a story or pairing is really good, but I'd rather not.
Again, not everyone will interpret height differences as reflecting power imbalance. I know there are actual short girls and tall boys that exist. I know that gay couples of contrasting heights exist in real life. But I'm talking about fictional character designs in an industry where art direction, art style, and character designs are used to convey story, tone, personalities, and expected relationship dynamics. I'm sure some mangaka purposefully design their height-difference couples to intentionally reflect one as the protector and the other as the protectee. It's a very common Romance genre trope. Though often technically an imbalance of power, it plays into a specific fantasy that some people really like. And I'm sure some manga readers and mangaka artists may not see height differences as reflective of power imbalance. But I think I've seen it enough times for it to mean that to me. Just as much as big eyed, cutesy character designs and art styles used to immediately convey to a reader that a new manga series' tone will be light. (Until Madoka Magica made subversion trendy.) Or just as much as realistic art style can often immediately convey a series will have a serious tone. I think there is a language of symbols in manga art styles, and it's kind of necessary in the industry, to quickly convey to potential readers what types of stories are inside of books. So I don't think it's too far fetched for me to see "super short romantic lead paired with super tall love interest", and fear a power imbalance might be in store. That's why I prefer fictional couples with same or similar heights.

Do you have any theories/thoughts on why Semantic Error is blowing up so much and crossing into the mainstream? Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan, but I am a little surprised about stuff like the Elle photo spread, the DKZ presale numbers and the "average Korean YouTube reaction channels" reacting to it.
Also, do you think it will have a positive influence on future productions or was it just a one time fluke?
(There's obviously not one right answer, I'm just curious about your BL expertise take 🤗)
Tumblr media
Why is Semantic Error so popular?
It really is that good. Look, I have loved me some Korean BL, it has gotten the most 10/10 ratings out of me - Color Rush, Light On Me, and To My Star - but they're all flawed. CR had faulty chemistry, LOM had a difficult love triangle (and is high school set, almost always less popular than university), and TMS has a very wonky story arc (story, what story?).
Korea hit it entirely out of the Parks with Semantic Error by doing a university set BL featuring everything we expect from BL just done exactly right. It has Korea's signature quality executed perfectly, and added bonus good story, great pacing, stunning visuals, and fantastic chemistry. You cannot ask for more from a BL, let alone a KBL.
It is basically flawless. The attention to detail in this show was mind numbing. Their continuity supervisor should win MAD awards.
ALSO
Enemies to lovers is one of the most popular romance tropes. And let’s be fair, these two actors are hypnotically beautiful both individually and together. Finally, they kissed well. Like actually kissed. In a Korean drama.
Tumblr media
That said, plenty of flawless shows over the years haven’t taken off.
So the next question is, why now?
Not only are Kdramas but BL in general is still on the up swing. More and more new fans are being added every day. It’s constantly being discovered.
A lot of those new fans are coming to BL via Kpop. As Korea casts more and more idols, KBL gets consistently new fans. Fans who specifically LIKE Korea’s clear precision style and attention to PRETTY. Because it’s the same style and approach they take with forming Kpop groups and filming Kpop MVs.
I don’t know Viki’s true numbers, but I can take an educated guess that they at least doubled their subscriber base over the last year, possibly tripled. Hosting Kingdom, iLand and now Queendom has pulled in a LOT of Kpop stans and there’s huge BL crossover in this demographic, so a lot of them are moving into Kdramas and KBL. Initially many were following idols but now they’re delving fully into BL
Tumblr media
In this instance we are also helped by Viki’s “Top 10″ algorithm which, unlike Netflix’s, is not filtered by user preferences. It literally just shows the Top 10 most watched stuff on the site. These days there’s always some BL in there. The more BL content Viki acquires, and the more BL fans are subscribers, the more BL shows in Top 10. Especially as BL watchers tend to be chronic rewatchers and last time I assessed it Viki’s count was based on runtime eyeballs, with no filter on IP/user. (Which means they don’t eliminate rewatches like YouTube does.) Semantic Error is still sitting there. Which means people are still recommending it and still rewatching it.
Korea is now onboarding a new wave of fans, after Thailand brought in the first wave.
There’s about to be a bifurcated BL fandom. This is inevitable. There’s now too much content for anyone but the obsessives to keep track of and try to watch everything, so we will start to get BL camps: people who are fans of one country’s BL style more than another. I think the first tribalism will be around Thai BL vs Korean BL. In fact it’s already happening.
This is not a weakness, this is human nature.

I definitely think it’s a possibility for Lucy to get her own show and for it being her like I guess overcoming her family and showing she can handle punishment for her wrongdoings and can be her own person and whatnot
But I also think because of the interviews and them doing those so soon especially with the first episode we see her in (the first episode of 5b) also just put them in a bad spot where if no one warms up to her throughout the rest of the episodes it’s just not gonna happen. They didn’t make anyone like her, they just made people dislike her more and more.
Not even for buddie. It’s because she genuinely got the attitude of a cocky person who thinks and is saying she’s here to stay. Her character is part of a cheating plot that no one wanted even if we didn’t like TayKay. She’s already shown to be reckless and put others in danger.
If they want people to warm up to her soon they’ll need to fix this and fast
Hey, nonnie! I hope you're having a peaceful weekend! 💕 I think the cheating storyline COULD have been received better if KR, AK, *and* Oliver didn't decide the best course of action was to make it about Buck's lack of feelings for TayKay and make sure the audience knew BL would still be dealing with ~sexual tension~ even after Lucy finds out about her coworker's gf. As I said not too long ago, the fandom is giving more excuses as to why Buck behaved that way than the people who came up with/carried out the scene. And then we had KR/AK talking about how Lucy & TayKay weren't going to meet "yet", meaning this soapy-ish entanglement just might be getting dragged out even longer for the sake of drama. (I've heard that the news van has been around on set in the later episodes? So even if BT is bones at the of 5x13, there will be some sort of awkwardness in the future? Maybe?) I honestly think KR (and AK and Oliver) thought Buck's infidelity would be shrugged off because fans were BEGGING for TayKay to go and if this is how it had to happen...so be it! But they also seem to have forgotten that a lot of viewers didn't want Lucy to be brought in as a romantic partner of any kind because, in their minds, a man and woman who aren't canonically gay are bound to get together. It's what the average viewer expects to see! 🙄 I have different theories in my brain for why AK was allowed to speak about her character's future throughout 5B - KR wanted to promote the storyline SHE built // the hope was that if they teased Lucy's storyline the fans would clamor for more of her // AK is in talks to star in a third series and is speaking as someone who believes her spot in the 911verse is secure no matter where she works - but the bottom line is that she gave two interviews *with* Kristen, and when the showrunner who brought you on board is trotting you out in front of a reporter...why wouldn't you think it means good things re: your time on the show? I don't know anything about what AK was like before booking this job, but KR's approach would probably give anyone an inflated sense of self, IMO. TPTB appear to have heard the backlash almost immediately after 5x11 and those first couple of interviews. Four days after the 5B premiere, AK goes from talking about BL's flirty behavior to assuring the fans that everything her character does is not about Buck. She hasn't spoken since. The folks behind the scenes, meanwhile, are suddenly careful to avoid any *obvious* shots of her in promos (besides what we saw prior to 5x11) so we don't really know when she's gonna pop up again, and the content with her on set has been damn near nonexistent in the aftermath of the kiss - just the one video/pic of her with the harness on for a rope rescue in the finale, I believe? It's a copy/paste of how BT was handled after the GP reacted negatively to the make out scene in the 5x01 sneak peek. In a way, I take this as a "good sign", because it shows *someone* in charge actually does care about public perception and just might switch up some things in the editing room - we already saw it happen during the Speed-esque rescue when the "looks like they're gonna kiss" moment was cut, and that was BEFORE people decided how they felt about her, so...the possibility is even stronger now, tbh. Idk about "warming up to her", but I think the only way people move past their negativity in the immediate future is if Buck acknowledges he should have never gotten involved with her because it turned him into a person he didn't want to be (again) and KR sends her self-insert away (like, outside of L.A. away) to emphasize that there is physical distance between the two moving forward. Here's hoping! 🥂

I just don't get how people instantly turn on shows, directors and writers they've been praising for weeks just because an episode doesn't go the way they wanted or expected it to go. Today's episode was hard to watch for sure, and yes, it left us in pain and with a whole lot of questions but that doesn't mean it's bad or the writers suck or whatever. Everyone knew it wouldn't be all fluff until the end, we've anticipated it the whole week. Now it's there and people are still disappointed. I feel like most bl watchers don't get this show. I'm sorry I don't mean to come across as arrogant but I really don't think Not me can be compared to your average bl. And even if it has flaws it's still a masterpiece on so many levels...acting, cinematography, music, the many astonishing details the writers put into the plot...I could go on but I guess all I want to say is that I'll be forever grateful to P'Nuchie and the entire team for giving us this show.
I will say that this episode did not strike me as badly as it did many other people (apparently?).
It made sense to me.
Well, Black is still a mystery to me but I think he's supposed to be.
And, yes, I wasn't expecting fluff. Heck, I was surprised we got as much softness as we did. This episode was fascinating and provided a lot of... what we need to keep moving.
We've got the reveal of the twins that has to happen, we've got Dan getting brought into the gang, we've got Black back, we've got... whatever the fuck Gram is up to, we've got Gumpa knowing too much, we've got evil Todd, we've got a view of White and Black's mom... there was so much this episode that had to happen.
I don't think it's that people don't 'get' the show. I think it's about expectations and hopes and how different people navigate shows. There's no reason to judge people for watching and enjoying differently.
I'm still, despite the good ending, not a fan of how Bad Buddy did the finale preview and I can honestly state that it affected how I watched the show and how I felt throughout. I still feel odd and have moved past very quickly because that week just... didn't work me. The wait didn't work and it soured the show (just slightly) but enough.
So I understand people who are struggling with how they saw this happening in Not Me versus how it did happen in Not Me. It can be hard to reconcile the emotions you planned to have versus what actually happened.
I think it's a very good show and I love what they've done. But this is one where I understand that people are coming at this from. Because having Sean not know that Black was different hurt deeply when we knew. But it also made sense because, frankly, Black wanted him to think he was White.
So... I am grateful for this show and it is amazing but this is not the kind of show I'll judge other people for their opinions on.

Okay I just HAVE TO get this off my chest right now.
I was watching the new episode of 2.43 seiin koukou danshi volley-bu, and well, I decided to check out the comment section because hey! I want to hear what other fans of the series have to say, liked, and so on.
Instead however-
I was met by the most horrid comment section it reminded me why I usually dont actually interact with the anime community (and usually just talk to myself or make posts like this one that nobody will read aha)
But shit, I like, felt so uncomfortable.
Now before I rant a bit, if anyone skimming this may get offended let me make something clear.
If you just arent into the series, or don't like the show/series, then that's fair.
I have literally no problem if you dont like the show, or are simply expressing that you just dont like it and list your own reasons, I completely respect people's opinions and right to openly criticize series, even if I dont agree with it.
However, the following, while I wont actually attack people for it, just made me so uncomfortable for liking the show that I had to talk about it.
So here we go.
2.43 seiin koukou danshi volley-bu is not a sports shonen and so you shouldnt expect it to be written and animated like one.
People are free to say they dont like the animation, artstyle, or way the series is written, we all have our personal tastes.
But, like, it felt like non of the people commenting had a single brain cell.
No I am not exaggerating.
This series is written is a very particular way, one that I'm ABSOLUTELY loving.
I'm not fond of most writing styles and usually have a hard time reading novels but this one I particularly enjoy.
However, it felt like everyone was bashing it for how it's being written, not understanding what the author is doing or setting up, not even understanding the basic structure or style the author has used for their series.
It honestly made alot of the people complaining sound really dumb, no offence, but you all sound stupid.
Then there were our typical HUGE swarm of "ewww gaaaay, omg he blushed, omg so cringe, ewwww"
Which I mean, every sports anime has so I'm used to the endless flood of these types of comments but I find them really annoying because dont get me wrong.
I'm Queer.
I like LGBT anime/manga but I also really enjoy Yaoi and Yuri in it's pure ridiculous form at times (not I'm not saying all BL or GL is the same, I dont think I need to get into this rn)
And of course I enjoy shamelessly shipping and headcanoning characters as well, whatever I want because it's fun and I am aloud to HEADCANON all I want.
So or course I like to jokingly ship sports anime characters for fun, even if I dont genuinly ship it , or sometimes do.
Because I like certain relationship dynamics they can have that are never explored in anime/manga.
However, being serious for a second, I dont genuinly go around saying characters are "Gay for sure 100% yeeee"
People blush at their friends. People and characters can have deep bonds and relationships that arent romantic whatsoever and can STILL feel more like a romance than a real romance, despite it not being intended in that way at all.
It's so stupid to bash a character for "ewww gaaaay shit" when they blush at, someone they genuinly care about and have a non romantic relationship with?
Idk it just makes them seem dumb, internet trolls suck and I usually ignore them, I just feel like complaining today.
In the end I must say, the most annoying group of people in the comments were, as any 2.43 seiin koukou danshi volley-bu fan has seen, the fucking haikyuu fandom.
I feel like I should note that I love haikyuu, I do, it's great, for a sports shonen I do enjoy it alot.
After all I do love me some sports shonens.
But haikyuu fans need to buy some brain cells or critical thinking abilities.
Listen, to all the normal haikyuu fans like myself, I salute you and this is in no way direct towards any of you.
It's for the....other ones.
Haikyuu and 2.43 seiin koukou danshi volley-bu have a couple things in common.
Volleyball
Their source material started getting serialized around the same times
Some character designs look similar.
And I'd say that's about it.
Neither one "copied" a premise from the other.
Okay? Haikyuu fans? For fuck sake? Can you stop "omg they really are running out of ideas huh"
"Omg this is a haikyuu rip off"
"Omg this is a watered down shitty haikyuu knockoff"
I'm going to shoot myself I swear to god shut up.
No.
No.
And fucking no.
It isnt. They started coming out in the same few years, and start completely different, a knock off? How?
I dont even see it one bit.
Now on the topic of some similar character designs.
To put it in a way haikyuu fans would understand, I've seen over 12 Kageyama "lookalikes" in anime, ones from LONG BEFORE haikyuu, and long after.
It's literally a common thing in any media platform, but we've all seen the same character design used before in diffrent shows.
It's not new, character designs were not stolen, please get a fucking brain cell.
Also he looks more like Saiki.K in most of the anime shots in my opinion.
Now, if you like haikyuu and you're looking for another sports shonen to
Live up to the hype, have the same premise kinda or just that awesome animation and typical sports shonen storyline you love to fill the void until another haikyuu season comes out.
Just feel like watching another sports shonen in general.
It isnt the show for you.
Now if you want to check out a volleyball show, check it out and form your own opinion on it and for the love of god dont compare it to haikyuu.
It's a sports drama.
If you like shes like Stars Align, Battery, or even Ahiru no Sora (which I feel has a nice balance of sports and drama, rather then focusing on either category, it balances both really well) then this is a show for you to check out.
I've watched I think 4 diffrent baseball anime? Maybe 5?
I never once compared them to each other while watching.
While comparisons are fun to do! I love reading about parallels, series that inspired other series and examples of how it was done and all that awesome jazz!
It's not the same as actively comparing a show to another one while you watch it.
Especially when they arent even in the same genre category.
Anyways this probably seems like a pointless rant but the comment section actually crushed my week long built up excitement for the new episode, cause I had the misfortune of opening it first to see who else was hyped and enjoyed the episode, only to find well, all of this crap.
And fans like me who tried to politely digress and explain how the writing style is different than the average sports series, or explain why it's written how it is, alot of them got met with SWARMS of more ignorant and just plain ride comments.
Also all my "you're fucking stupid" comments in this rant, are directed towards those people in particular.
Now if you are simply genuinly confused about why there are time skips, why it's written how it is, or any other things, this is not directed at you.
Not at all.
Not understanding a writing/directing style is a completely innocent thing and there are many fans who would be happy to explain it.
The hate is directly towards the arrogant, annoying, internet trolls and haikyuu fandom who has been getting annoying lately? Especially about this show.

@recklessinventor sends: ▲▲▲ [give me your opinions i love them]
A triangle for an unpopular opinion | Open…
Tumblr media
oh yeah we’re really getting into it now
1. I honestly don’t even bother to check her tag these days so I’m probably out of the loop (not like there’ll be anything worthwhile), but I hate it when people gloss over Naoto’s trauma. I don’t know if this is a symptom of people overlooking trauma in female characters in general, but god, in depth Naoto discussion is lacking.
I can see people write up essays about the trauma of being a child detective in relation to AKECHI. When it comes to Naoto, they’re just “ehhh she doesn’t have much trauma compared to poor gowo or yowosuke or adchee tee hee. it’s just sexism mama mia.”
The most discussion I ever see of her is in relation to the discourse, and we all know my stance on it. It makes my cringe little heart sad to see people pour so much love into Yu, Yosuke and Adachi and when it comes to Naoto (and everyone else), they’re just “who cares??? she has no character compared to those three??”
Shut up before I break your bones and shove you into the TV—
Tumblr media
Anyways.
2. I hate it when Yosuke fans make Saki out to be a bad person. They claim the voice in the liquor store was her actual voice and not her Shadow’s, and it’s just proof that poor Yosuke was verbally abused, and the only person he can really trust is Yu.
What.
One of the things Saki had said to Yosuke was something like, “Your parents are your parents. You’re you”. This is before Yu is in the picture. Even when he’s there, Yosuke doesn’t tell him about the negative rep he gets because of his association with Junes right away. Saki’s words read as her way of trying to empathize with Yosuke’s struggles.
I’m not denying that she felt annoyed with the way Yosuke acted around her, but to go so far as to so she’s a bad person because of the words her SHADOW said reeks of typical BL fans hating a girl character getting in the way of their precious gay gay homosexual gay ship.
Saki is one of the people who show kindness to Yosuke during his first six months in Inaba. Of course Yosuke’s SL is going to focus on her because she was important to him. Besides, Yosuke makes it pretty clear that he still cares for her, and while their relationship wasn’t that deep, he isn’t going to move on so fast from her death instantaneously.
She was someone he wanted to get to know more.
To have Yosuke go “oh yeah she was a cunt lol” is not how he works. He has a big heart. He’s described as the person who is too nice by the IT. Look me in the eye and tell me he resents Saki.
P.S. Also Saki being a piece of shit would conflict with what Naoki says about her in his SL so.
3. I’m tired of seeing the ‘Souji characterization’ in most P4 MC’s. I say ‘Souji characterization’ because Souji was the basically the first defined P4 MC. If you don’t know the fabled Souji, he is from the P4 Manga and many people know that I hate it a lot.
Anyways, Souji is characterized as a person who keeps people at arm’s length because he knows he’ll move around every year. His internal narration in the first chapter more or less is not how an average teen speaks. He is not that emotional in the first few volumes, but slowly learns to appreciate his friends and then we don’t talk about how he starts simping for Adachi after one meeting.
It doesn’t take a genius to know that Yu is different from Souji. Yu properly buttoned up his jacket like a nerd before he decided to go for that bancho look.
When it comes to Yu, many have adopted his name as the canon one, but have still kept the distant loner characterization of Souji. A lot of people. I don’t mind if people like it, because it is worth exploring and I’ve come to expect this kind of P4 MC by now, but it’s kind of boring to see a billion of sad Yu’s with bad, abusive parents and he’s a little bit of a distant loner hrhgh
He’s a blank slate.
You don’t need to follow in the footsteps of Souji.

Now Furuba S2 is over, what now?
I’m already seeing a lot of people asking for recommendations now the S2 Sub is over; so this is a list of series that I think you’ll enjoy if you like Furuba!
All platforms listed are true for the UK, but might not be for other residences. More viewing options may be available in other territories.
Unless specified, All Manga/Comic recs are available from regular bookstores and EBook Stores. If you’re in the UK I’ll suggest checking out Hive, which is an online store where a potion of each sale goes towards a Local Independent Bookstroe of your choice! They also have flat-rate free shipping!
Okay, so the actual recs! (I got lazy in some places and used the official synopisis)

Tsuruedure Children Funimation (Dub), Crunchyroll (Sub) 12 Eps Total Manga (Ebook only) 12/12 Volumes available in English
“Short and charming comedic vignettes offer a quick glimpse into the unique and funny situations, misunderstandings, and all around confusion that can happen in a high school romance. With enough time and some incredible skill at the strings, perhaps this motley crew can strike a chord with the judges.“
O Maidens in your Savage Season HIDIVE (Dub/Sub) 12 Eps Total Manga: 7/8 volumes available in English (8th available for pre-order)
The series follows a High School Literature club as they make their nervous first foray into the nature of sexuality. What is the difference between sexual attraction and romantic attraction? Does watching porn mean wanting to have sex? What are these strange feelings I am having down below? Why are boys so gross and girls so pretty? Each girl undergoes their own journey and finds their own destination, a brutally honest yet heart warming look at teenage female sexuality.
CW: Sexual Assault, pedophilia (both portrayed as BAD AND TERRIBLE things)
Our Dreams at Dusk Manga: 4/4 volumes available in English
IF YOU ONLY CONSUME ONE THING ON THIS LIST MAKE IT THIS!!!!! The series is the VERY DEFINITION of “It Gets Better”.

Shocked out of his moment, he decides to go and investigate what’s happening and finds an LGBT+ Drop In Centre. The series follows the lives of the people in the drop in centre, from Haruko who wishes to marry her closeted girlfriend, to Misora who is still trying to figure out what their gender is but has the threat of puberty hovering of their shoulder.
It’s very clear that Kamatani-sensei has written this story FOR the Queer Community. It’s a truly beautiful story. Please give it your money if you can, so that Kamatani-sensei can actually earn some money, and so that Seven Seas know that there is a viable audience for these stories! So that we may get more content!
Reverse Harem
Fruits Basket is NOT a reverse Harem, but i figure there’ll be some fan crossover.
Kiss Him, Not Me Cruncyroll (sub) Funimation Dub available on DVD etc. 12 Eps Total Manga 14/14 volumes available in English
“Kae Serinuma believes one thing—princes belong together! As an avid boy’s love fan, she loves nothing more than fantasizing about faux relationships between the boys at her school. But when she loses weight due to the stress of her favorite anime character dying suddenly the boys want…her?! From pretty average to prettiest girl, Kae just wants these boys to date each other, not her!”
Sub uses an irritating “Silly Fat Person” voice that the Dub doesn’t. CW for Sexual Assult, though it is depicted as a BAD thing and used for Kae to question why she is so into it when reading BL, when IRL it is terrifying?
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom Crunchyroll (Dub/Sub) 12 Eps Total
A TRULY Bisexual harem! After bumping her head, young Katarina Claes awakens with all the memories of her past life... and promptly realises she’s been re-incarnated as the antagonist of her favourite Otome Game! Throughout the series, she tries harder and harder to avoid her doom flags... without realising that she’s turned those doom flags into romance flags!
Katarina lives out the fantasy of going to magic school and eating cake as all the pretty people fall head over heels for her. A pity she’s too dim to notice.
Ouran High School Host Club Funimation (Dub/Sub) 24 eps total Manga: 18/18 volumes available in english
Set in the high class elite private school of Ouran High, the Host Club exist to provide entertainment for the ladies of the school. Along the way, she gets to know better the Cool Kyoya, the flamboyant Tamaki, the Mischievous Hikaru & Kaoru, the Strong and Silent Mori-senpai and the adorable Honey-senpai. Comedic Hijinks ensue!
Slice of Life
The Emperor and I Manga: 4/4 volumes available in English on Shonen Jump App
One day Kaho returns home from school to find an Emperor Penguin in her fridge. He quickly becomes a beloved part of the family, but a secret to the rest of the world who would want to take him away from them. Hijinks ensue.
Kakushigoto Funimation (Dub/Sub) 12 Eps Total
Doting single father, Kakushi Goto, is determined to hide the fact that he writes echhi humour manga for a living. He couldn’t bare it if his daughter were to ever find out the truth, the shame of his profession only alienating her. A laugh out loud series that will suddenly cut you deep as it explores the nature of grief and familial love.
My Brother’s Husband Manga: 2/2 volumes available in English
“Yaichi, a stay-at-home single father, lives with his daughter Kana in suburban Tokyo. They are visited by Mike Flanagan, the widower of Yaichi's estranged twin brother Ryōji, who has traveled from his native Canada for three weeks to learn about Ryōji's past. Kana is fascinated by Mike and is immediately accepting of him, though Yaichi is hesitant to accept Mike as family.
While Yaichi is not overtly homophobic, Mike suggests that his tacit discomfort over his brother's sexuality drove a wedge between them that led to their estrangement. Mike's interactions with the family and neighborhood over the subsequent three weeks prompt Yaichi to confront his own prejudices around sex and sexuality, as his growing tolerance and eventual acceptance of Mike parallel his overcoming of his own homophobia.”
Whilst the trope of “the gay brother dies and the heterosexual brother learns not to be homophobic” might be over done in western media, the same is not true for Japan. It’s a heartfelt and honest look at grief and acceptance, as well as how the nature of family is changing all around the world... but attitudes are maybe conservative attitudes aren’t as quick to catch up.
Nichijou: My Ordinary Life Funimation (Dub/Sub)
So apparently everyone went “this show is undubbable! It relies too much on puns and untranslatable humour!” and then Howard Wang said “hold my beer” and did it. A bizarre comedy series set in a high school. It’s probably best known for the ongoing fight between the deer and the principal.
Way of the Househusband Manga: 4/5+ (ongoing) volumes available in English
After he meets and marries the career driven Miku, Tatsu AKA The Immortal Dragon decides to give up his life of crime to commit to being the worlds’ best husband. You’d be surprised at the transferable skills between a Yakuza enforcer and a house husband. From knowing how to efficiently cut up a slice of meat, to how to perfectly clean a bathroom of all evidence. Hilarious and heartwarming, Taki and Kyoko would be best bros.
Slice of Life + Supernatural
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K S1 Funimation (Dub/Sub) 24 episodes Netflix S1 (Dub/Sub) S2 & 3 (Sub) 50 episodes total
“Saiki Kusuo is a typical 16-year-old high school student… except he has psychic powers. He can use them to get whatever he wants, but he also knows everything that people are thinking. Everything. No surprises, no secrets, no normal human experiences. He’s kept his powers in check since childhood, but with the temptations of high school now on his mind, he’s bending the rules—and spoons.“
Sabrina The Teenage Witch (2019)
Writer Kelly Thompson wears her magical girl influences on her sleeve in this new take on the Archie Classic. Sabrina is your regular teenager, except she is also a witch and so are her aunts. Hijinks (and Card Captor Sakura References) ensue.
Toilet Bound Hanako-kun Funimation (Dub/Sub) 12 eps total Manga 13/13 Volumes available in English
“Kamome Academy is rumored to have many mysteries, the strangest of which involves the mischievous ghost of Hanako-kun. When occult-loving high schooler Nene Yashiro accidentally becomes bonded to him, she uncovers a hidden world of supernatural beings. Now the two of them are conspiring to keep the peace between student and supernatural—that is, if they can only stay out of trouble themselves.“
Jughead (2015) 4 Volumes total
Bought to you in various parts by the creators of Squirrel Girl, Jughead combines slice of life with spy thriller, time travel and the joy of a good burger. Hilarious and heart warming, this run holds a special place in my heart as the one where Jughead was confirmed as canonically asexual and continues to express various aro/ace moods throughout the series. There’s a REASON my friends say I’m a Real Life Jughead....
Weathering With You - available digitally/physically 28th Sep. 2019
In June 2021, first year high schooler Hodaka Morishima leaves Kōzu-shima in order to get to Tokyo. When his ferry to the city is hit by a rainstorm, he is saved by Keisuke Suga, who runs a small occult magazine that’s looking for an assistant. As Hodaka becomes broke and struggles to find work, he meets Hina Amano, an employee of a McDonald’s restaurant. She takes pity on him and gives him food. After agreeing to work with Suga, Hodaka learns about the legend of the “sunshine girl” who can control the weather! It turns out that the newly unemployed Hina is a sunshine girl! And with her little brother, they start up their own business to bring sunshine to the never-ending rain of Tokyo.
Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches Crunchyroll (Dub/Sub) 12 Episodes Total Manga: 22/28 volumes available in English
After tripping on the stairs, School Bad Boy Ryu Yamada and Top Student Urara Shiraishi discover they can swap bodies with a kiss! They then learn that they’re not the only ones with magic powers in the school, and with the help of the Supernatural Studies Club they begin to track down the identities of the 7 witches of Suzaku High.
This series really stretches my limits on fan service, but at least it does proceed to get a little even in terms of gender. It’s still a really rather sweet and romantic series, once you get past the boobs and panties.
Your Name Netflix (Dub/Sub) Spin Off Manga “Your Name: Another Side: Earthbound” - 2/2 volumes available in English
A modern take on the Red Sting of Fate mythos, Mitsuha and Taki are two teenagers tied together. Three times a week, Mitsuha will wake up in Taki’s body and live the life of a Tokyo School boy. In turn, Taki will wake up in Mitsuha’s body and learn what it is to be a Rural Shrine Maiden. A look at the bonds that tie us, and how fate won’t let two young people fall apart before they can meet.
Also the animation is BEAUTIFUL and it made me cry. Like a lot. There’s a spin off manga called “Your Name: Another Side” that follows the same story but from the POV of Mitsuha’s friends and family. It really brings new light to the events and made me very emotional.
Mental Health
Green Lanterns: Rebirth (2018)
Jessica Cruz suffers from PTSD and severer anxiety, seeing her utalising her will power to overcome those problems and harness that energy to help save the universe is so incredibly powerful and moving.
Hawkeye (2012-2015) 4 Volumes
The Fraction/Aja/Wu/Hollingworth Hawkeye run is widely considered one of the best superhero runs of all time. Fraction and Aja perfectly capture “functional depression” at its finest, and we watch as Clint Barton slowly burns all his bridges before being forced by his friends to sort his shit out and put them back together again. There’s also a whole issue that’s primarily written in sign language too.
My Roomate is a Cat Funimation (Dub) Crunchyroll (Sub) 12 eps total
“Mystery author Mikazuki would rather live in total isolation than deal with others. Getting a roommate is the last thing he’d ever do, until a stray cat sparks an idea for his next novel. After plucking the little killer off the streets, this four-legged muse inspires Mikazuki in ways he would have never expected. And for the street-wise cat, this human just opened the door to a whole new world.”
A Silent Voice (Manga/Movie) Movie: Netflix (Dub/Sub)
“A former class bully reaches out to the deaf girl he’d tormented in grade school. He feels unworthy of redemption but tries to make things right.”
CW Attempted Suicide, bullying
Please watch the dub. Lexi Marman Cowden, who voices Shoko, is an ACTUAL hard-of-hearing actress. It makes for a more real and vulnerable performance that avoids the mild ableism of the Sub hiring a Hearing Actress and robot-ising her voice.
Yuri!!! On ICE Crunchyroll (Sub) Funimation (Dub) 12 eps total
“Yuri Katsuki makes his way to the Grand Prix ice skating competition as Japan’s top representative with his eyes on the prize. However, instead of celebrating, Yuri walks away defeated and ready to retire for good. But a run-in with champion Viktor Nikiforov and rising star Yuri Plisetsky ignites a new fire within him. With the two of them close by his side, Yuri will take to the ice once more.”
Yuri’s defeat sends him into a very relatable spiral of lack of self belief that he slowly starts to regain thanks to the help of Viktor. Part sports anime, part love story, all full of feels.
The Dub is considered hit or miss depending on whether you like accents or not, but honestly it’s worth it for Sabat’s Christophe giacometti. Ayame walked, so Christophe could strut.
Generic
I’m gonna start by recommending the Shonen Jump App, it’s £1.99/month and gives you access to all their recent publications as well as their back catalogue in English! So you can read all of Boys Over Flowers, Nisekoi, Naruto, One Piece, Haikyuu, Assassination Classroom, My Hero Academia etc. for a fraction of the cost of buying the physicals! SO much manga at your finger tips! No, they don’t sponsor me but i wish they would.
Astra Lost in Space Funimation (Dub/Sub) 12 Eps Total Manga: 5/5 volumes available in english, available on the Shonen Jump App
A group of teenagers on a school trip become Lost In Space and quickly discover a conspiracy is a foot. Part thriller, part comedy, saying anything more about this series would count as a spoiler given the number of plot twists throughout.
Radiant Funimation (Dub) Crunchyroll (Sub) 42 eps total Manga: 13/13+ volumes available in english (ongoing series)
A french manga turned into a Japanese Anime.
“Seth, a sorcerer destined to find Radiant, sets his sights on Caislean Merlin for answers. He’s desperate to find out what the Knight Sorcerers know, but can he trust them? In the wake of all that is unknown, he digs deep within himself for the wisdom and confidence to control his powers. And as the world around him continues to grow with more magic and power, he gains strong new allies.”
The series has BIG Saturday Morning cartoon vibes. My 12 year-old self would have been ALL OVER this.
Batman Ninja (Netflix)
What if a Japanese animation studio asked DC if they could make a batman movie? And then just threw a Japanese history book at it? What if there was time travel? What if the main batman villains were all feudal lords in Japan? What if everyone were Samari? What if Damian had a small animal companion he could communicate with using a flue? What if Jason’s hood was made out of wicker? What if Penguin had a penguin shaped mecha?
A wild ride from start to finish that makes no sense but really, do you care?

Hello, I remember you saying some time ago you didn't like how female characters are portrayed in (current) anime because of how annoying and, maybe, misogynistic their archetypes are. Could you maybe elaborate on this point? I feel similar but can't articulate well and always end up feeling like I'm the one being misogynistic whenever this type of subject comes up in conversation x.x Sorry if this comes up as too personal.
Sorry about the late reply, I have been busy with a conference. Also sorry, because my answer is a bit long and all over the place ^^;
This is a difficult question, especially because nowadays people like to think in black and white, and everything is so extreme, like if they don’t like something, then it must be wrong and eliminated, not to mention the policing of every content based to this – which kills diversity and dismisses personal (and gendered) preferences. What I think is really a personal preference and not exactly a general critique of female characters in anime, especially because there are many factors to consider (genre, age and gender or the target audience, cultural background, etc.), and there’s also the audience with its multiple readings.
Personally I dislike most female character types manga and anime has to give, because I’m not really a person for overly feminine and girly things. The Japanese ideal is very cutesy and it’s the standard in both media for men, women and also real life. Not just looks, there is also the behavior side of things, the cutesy, childish, girly ideal, the passivity, helplessness, pretending to be stupid, etc, and I outright hate it when female characters are treated as stupid, clumsy messes. The question is, though, is this ideal really conservative and an embodiment of the toxic patriarchal system? Actually not necessarily. They definitely originate from the oppressive system, but over the decades girls made these ideals their own, and turned them into a weapon to get what they want. Even in real life, fashion is very feminine for me, always with frills, ribbons, flitters, tons of dresses and skirts, and it’s difficult to find plain clothes without any decoration, not to mention all the cuteness in goods and stuff, but as for the behavior of girls and women, the cutesy ideal seems more like a role to be played at a certain age or for certain purposes, like getting things they want and eventually the man. A woman, who didn’t like this ideal herself defined it as “they had to play the wounded deer”. Actually women, who use this role too much and even among women, are usually hated – this is the infamous burikko.
But no matter how they were in their younger years, married women don’t use this role anymore, and they seamlessly slip into a different identity, one that rules the family and the finances with iron fist (I’m stereotyping) – nothing cutesy, helpless or stupid about that. The Japanese themselves are aware of this cutesy role, both men and women, it’s their version of cunning flirtatiousness, it’s just a very different type of flirtatiousness than in the West. For example, there is currently even a tv show enacting certain situations where this cutesy behavior is used to get the man, and the hosts rate how effective the cutesy behavior was. But while I understand intellectually that these are not necessarily misogynistic stereotypes, I have some kind of a visceral hatred for them. The above tv show makes me outright nauseous. It’s a personal preference, and I don’t think I have to like these character types. But I also don’t think they should be erased from Japanese media, and it would be a mistake trying to push my very independent Western values onto such a different culture, so I rather avoid these characters – which is not easy.
So, what does this mean for anime and manga? Both are largely determined by genres (manga more than anime), genres work with clean-cut character types, tropes, traditions and reader expectation, so there is a reason why female (and male) characters are the way they are in different genres. Male-oriented works will obviously have female characters that appeal to men even if the work doesn’t have in your face fanservice shots (though let’s face it, if it’s anime, most of them do). I don’t like these female character types, I don’t think I have to like them, they are clearly not geared toward me, but I also don’t think they shouldn’t be there in a clearly male-oriented media. Sure, there can be discussions about removing overly exploitive situations, harassment and rape or things like that, but I’m not really against letting men have their fun – because I expect to have that same freedom in media geared toward women. There are occasionally unisex anime, but usually they still serve one or the other demographic in a way, and I don’t think it’s possible to create truly unisex anime that everybody will be satisfied with – fanservice for women will always bother men, and fanservice for men will always bother women.
Shōjo manga is a more difficult question, because somewhere in the 70s romance started to focus on imperfect heroines who still got the best guy, because he loved them regardless of their imperfections (“I love you the way you are”), and since then the genre is full of the stupid, clumsy, indecisive, housewife material archetype without any dreams beyond getting the boy (or very old-school women job dreams), which does not appeal to me either, so I usually avoid most romance shōjo manga, especially the high school variant, and even most josei manga, because I don’t care for the adult version of the same with marriage as the end goal *shrug* Actually it’s not even about these things only, like, I disliked Arte too (though not shōjo manga), despite it trying (and failing) to pose as a feminist social commentary, just because the mc way annoying. Fortunately there are a lot of other types of shōjo manga as well, even with more appealing female characters or the best, without female characters (plus the whole BL scene), so it’s not all that bad, at least in manga, not so much in anime. Interestingly, I’m much more compatible with shōjo manga by fujoshi artists. If I like a shōjo manga, usually the artist ends up coming out as a fujoshi after a while by posting BL fanart on her twitter or drawing outright BL manga – it’s been a pattern XD
Anime is more difficult, but I also admit, that my tastes might be extreme. In Japan there are many female fans who love the cute female characters of male-oriented media. Many women like Love Live, for example, because the girls are, I quote, “so cuuuuuute” – while I am fighting nausea… Yeah, Japan is imbued with cute. It’s especially difficult, because I’m usually not willing to watch a series even if there are such female characters in supporting roles or as a second protagonist with male characters I would love to see (Cop Craft was a recent-ish example). And while I avoid female only casts on principle, sometimes there are surprises. For example, the Yashahime anime has terrible writing, but I don’t hate the three main female characters (even if occasionally the anime has some iffy things to say about femininity).
I also mentioned multiple readings. It is important to note that the audience does not necessarily interpret everything the same, especially if there are cultural differences. One of the most famous examples for this is Sailor Moon, which was the incarnation of girl power and emancipation in the West in the 90s, but it has the same “dumb heroine gets the dream guy” trope, and the same conservative message of getting married and giving birth to children as any average shōjo manga, and the same “so cuuuuute” packaging. It really depends on the audience what they get away with.
All in all there are preferences, genre conventions, cultural differences, so the whole thing is quite difficult. But I don’t think you need to be worried about not liking or being uncomfortable with certain character types. And it would be a stretch to consider tastes like mine, for example, misogynistic. Sure, even in real life I make a wide berth around overly girly or feminine women (among others), but it can’t be helped, you can’t like and be friends with everyone, and I guess they wouldn’t like me or wanting to be my friend either. And that’s fine, and I don’t think it’s misogynistic for me to reject certain types of femininity for myself and to interact with, as long as I don’t want to erase or invalidate them, or deem them as inferior – and I don't. Of course, this is the attitude I expect towards myself as well. Live and let live 🖖

After much watching...I cut it down to 5 anime and 1 short.
Suppose a Kid… 1
I am not writing out that full title every time! Anyways, here’s the first “real” debut of winter 2021.
For some reason…this series reminds me of Pokemon. Probably how at the start, Ash tries to get along with Pikachu by doing all sorts of things like what Lloyd is doing here. (<- learnt protag’s name through synopses)
The name “Shouma” rang a bell and I was right – Shouma is voiced by Souma…Saito.
The Japanese title has “monogatari” on the end there…so it probably doesn’t fully translate into the English title.
These orange flecks in Lloyd’s eyes are kinda distracting…
Isn’t Kunlun in China, though…?
If this is just going to be Marie yelling…I don’t see why I should stay. (<- turned volume on for everything so far)
*facepalms* Lloyd is so dense…
That fight scene’s not very good…
…oh great. Selen’s fallen in love with Lloyd already…*sigh*
The missing princess is certainly going to be a plot point later.
Wow, that tiger looks impressive! If only they could’ve done that for the fight scene…
…oh great, Selen is a low-key yandere…
Didn’t Lloyd say he sucked at combat…? Anyways, I’m not keeping this. The designs are colourful and the tiger was good, but it’s meant to be a comedy and it’s not funny.
Hortensia Saga 1
Here for Ume! He’s voicing a guy called Defloitte Danois.
I-Is that CGI? So early on into the anime???
*a dude gets bitten into by the werewolf*…welp, at least this series isn’t afraid of its own gore.
I had a sinking feeling our real protag was Alfred…and I was right, according to the OP.
Huh? The song goes silent for a second near the end…what the heck?
The book appears to use English, albeit English so faintly inked in you can’t quite tell what language it is.
Alfred, governing Albert…? Isn’t that a bit redundant?
I swear all the female voices in this anime are squeaky as all get out…
All these high fantasy anime – or heck, any high fantasy series full stop – ever justify why the country is worth fighting for. It’s why I find war stories pointless and senseless.
You can tell from the voice and short stature “Marius” is Mariel…but she uses boku, which is why Alfred can’t really tell the difference. (Also, he wasn’t privy to the fact Mariel cut her hair.)
This almost smacks of a game tutorial. The CGI is still there…it’s not as bad as other examples I’ve seen, but you can tell it’s CGI when you look at it.
Roy’s kind of pretty, in a generic way.
A close-range archer! Ho, you’re kinda impressive yourself, Roy. (The feeling of a game tutorial has disappeared by this point.)
Hortense…of Hortensia…how confusing.
The scruffy guy you keep seeing with the dark hair is Defloitte. Keep an eye out for him for me, would you?
The ED seems to consist mostly of…anguished pop screams. *cringes slightly*
Anyways, this anime isn’t bad. It’s quite average though and its CGI could easily get worse.
Kumo Desu ga 1
…you know I don’t like 1st person cam, yeah?
…this is just Kumoko (as I’ve heard her being called) yelling so far…plus there’s quite a bit of CGI.
I like how the ED has an English overlay and the style they’ve used for it. The music, though…? Nah.
Wait a second? Millepensee? Shin Itagaki? That would explain the CGI!
“…a spider that just happens to have my memories.” – A butterfly dream, huh?
…well, at least this anime is well aware of the genre space it inhabits. Maybe you could say…it’s an isekai light novel, so what? *groans from the audience*
…well, you didn’t really “bring” your “brother’s” (?) corpse in case of an emergency, now, did you?
…welp, to have guts, you must eat guts. I guess that’s how it goes.
What’s a “skanda”?
This anime’s quite monologue-y (as expected of an LN). I can live with it, but I don’t know if it can carry the entire thing through the season.
…humans? Haven’t seen them almost all episode. What are they up to?
These designs sort of look like SAO’s. They’re not a dealbreaker yet, but they could be down the line…
This ED seems to take cues from Cop Craft’s OP (same studio). It also has some…“Aggretsuko rage”, I guess you could call it.
2.43 1
…Another confusing title, I see. I normally don’t do sports anime, but I’m here for Ume.
*sees the colour of the volleyball* - Basically anything volleyball has to collaborate with volleyball maker Mikasa, doesn’t it?
This anime seems to like putting characters’ thoughts on the screen for dramatic impact. The CGI is sort of visible, but not a dealbreaker.
I’d thought I’d heard of this OP artist before, but it turns out I haven’t.
This series has a nice sense of force. You see those moments where the ball squishes, or when Yuni presses against the wall without thinking? Those.
LOL, way to burn Yuni, Chika…
These transitions are a bit hard to detect. I think I like Akudama’s more overt ones more.
LOL, Dr Popper (sic).
The serves are nothing special. Haikyuu does the same thing from the episode I saw of it. (You know I don’t like Haikyuu, yeah? Dropped it after 1 episode because everything I heard the fans talking about caused me to connect the dots.)
The way Yuni blushes…it’s more than someone usually would, even if it is out of embarrassment. It may just be the entertainment I consume, but I could swear that’s going somewhere in more of a BL manner.
I get the feeling Chika has a bit of Virgo or Taurus in him somewhere. The sort of guy who nags at everyone to do stuff his way is probably like that.
Pocari Sweat (unaltered).
I gave myself dimples by puffing up my cheeks and poking them until they became permanent. I guess you can do the same thing with ambidexterity…?
For some reason, I can detect Chika’s jealousy when he discusses blocks and natural talent.
…wow, this anime is pretty serious for a volleyball anime.
The ED scene where the face is replaced with flowers is pretty creepy. Like Jigokuraku or something.
Cells at Work!! 1
What are these blob creatures you see in the OP, anyway…?
I think I remember reading something that the numbers assigned to the cells aren’t arbitrary – they’re hexadecimal colors, e.g. RBCs get shades of red as their numbers.
D’aww, Platelets warm the heart. They really do.
Platelets have a master…? I thought they were all just lil’ kids.
“What the cell’s going on?!” – Oh, I remember seeing a tweet about this. I love that pun! Kudos to whoever was responsible for that.
LOL, no. 4989 dancing in the background.
Hmm…those nets look like CGI.
…uh, I did not need that shot of the Megakaryocyte’s camel toe…that’s distubring.
Wait, Backward Cap is a she?!
Aw, lookit WBC being a dad. That’s cute.
Backward Cap = Ushiromae-chan.
Is that…a construction worker holding a giant pudding?!
Cells at Work Code Black 1
This anime is called “black” due to black companies. It’s Code Black to avoid being racist, I guess. I’m looking forward to it because it’s undoubtedly going to show a dark side to the main series…
…and there it is, the RBC complaining.
I assume OJT = on the job training.
I knew “pespin” (sic) was a typo. It’s pepsin.
Now that I’ve been working at customer service for two years (give or take COVID), I can see where the senpai RBC is smoothing over the relations.
…that also means I know where to suppress my emotions. I’m not a person who opens up to people easily without getting used to them, so people never see me as suitable for customer service anyway, but it’s the only experience I have so *shrugs*.
…oh gosh. I haven’t seen these words since…the time I was still learning biology.
…*sigh* Rookie RBC is worried about boobs.
The fact Senpai lost his iconic hat…is kinda sad, actually.
“Don’t let his resolve be for nothing.”
Hmm…does the male WBC from the main series wear black fingerless gloves?
I thought I’d heard of this artist before…but turns out I just can’t distinguish really autotuned artists from each other…(lel)
…and stuff goes ka-blam. It’s the spiritual successor to HypMic, even if I wasn’t asking for it. (LOL)
Back Arrow 1
…I heard you said “hot guys”? (Yes, I am predictable as all get out.)
What’s with that episode title…?
Stereotypes, eh? I kind of expected as much from the promo, but where’s the title character…?
…was that yuri fanservice? I can’t quite tell because it was the aftermath of an action scene, but I can see the shippers gearing up in my head.
…after a bit of waiting, there he is. Back Arrow himself. He kind looks like Takuto (Star Driver).
“I’m not trying to hide anything!” – Well, that’s…true.
…*sigh* Why do girls always have more feminine-looking mechs? (Plus this one has boobs…*sighhhhhhhhhhhh*)
So it seems mechs in this anime are the form of one’s conviction and they have skills along those lines, eh? An interesting concept.
…you do realise I abandoned an entire anime based on a joke about lucky underwear? However, this anime is so absurd and just keeps running with the joke that I just can’t say no to it. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from volunteering at a charity store, it’s that when it comes to selling stuff, you can’t say no to a lot of stuff…including selling potentially used underwear, so long as it’s not dirty or stinky.
Whoa! Those things break?!
Why does the title card mention the wall...?
Anyways, I…like it, surprisingly enough. Let’s keep going.
Back Arrow 2
…eh? Didn’t expect inflatable clothing, LOL.
I suspect Shu Bi is scheming something.
What’s the long thing…?
“…tomorrow might not come.” – A good reminder to have in these times of COVID.
Peath = Peace. (Heh. What a stupid name…*thinks about the name “Quattro Bajeena” suddenly* Okay, “Peath” pales in comparison to that.)
What is that creature that circles in the sky…?
I know this is meant to be a serious fight, but…that attacking guy’s hat seriously looks like a bamboo stalk and so I keep seeing it and trying not to laugh.
I only just now realised there’s CGI. CGI these days is getting much better than it used to be.
Tomozaki 1
LOL, Yontendo. It’s clearly Smash Bros + Nintendo Switch and the character designer was also around for Iroduku, so that’s why this style looks familiar.
…lemme guess, since this is a romance, it’s likely NONAME is Aoi. Or some other girl.
I would pay for a romance where it’s the girl building the guy up to be presentable, instead of a girl building other girls up to be presentable a la Ageha 100%.
Didn’t the anime show us Tomozaki reflecting to himself, though…?
“…rules working in combination.” - Well, there’s social norms (e.g. knock before entering a room), laws, contracts, societal standards (e.g. in Japanese society, you bow to others as a greeting or apology)…(continues to blabber on for a bit)
I think Aoi said something like “onitadaku”, but I’m not sure what the joke is there. Oni is in there, sure, but what’s the original phrase she’s playing off?
…LOL, it’s a good time to remind people to wear a mask.
LOL, Krout.
Anyways, this seems decent. I like how it’s going the way I want it to.
Tomozaki 2
“…make sure I’m nearby…” – Okay, that’s just being pushy, Aoi.
Minami and Hinami…so confusing…
*Minami chomps on Natsubayashi’s ear* - …okay, that’s not a thing girls do in real life unless they’re lesbians. This is likely trying to take the fanservice route.
They didn’t even show why the “kiss” was broken up…meaning they were doing it to make potential girl-on-girl look hot. Just great.
*Aoi touches Tomozaki’s butt* - Dude, that’s groping…
I didn’t think we’d get the story on Aoi’s “hexactly” so soon.
…well, that episode just made me feel mildly bitter. I’m dropping it here.
Praeter 1
…aw s***. Only a few seconds in and this looks like a terrible game…
It’s like someone barfed paint across Durarara…
The only time the background buildings look any good are when there’s a fight scene…
These Seals (or whatever those designs are called) seem to act like mini shields. Update: They’re called tattoos.
That transition was a bit fast for my liking…
Seems like the series is mildly peppered with Greek terms.
“To Infinity and Beyond” by…some author I can’t really read the name of.
Suddenly, they throw in more characters…?
Where does Eiji keep those bullet cases of his…? In his jacket?
Having a guy die in the 1st episode is cheap. I mean, we don’t quite care for him yet – it’s too early in the anime for that.
Now there’s Norse terms on top of the Greek ones…
Even more characters? You kidding me?
Lemme guess, Eiji gave up his tattoo because Yamato inspired him and now he’s a goner.
Welp, the weight of the world is in your hands, Yamato. Including that dead dude on your back. (<- sarcastic)
Sk8 1
I’ve been hearing good things about this anime! Let’s go! (<- about a week late to the debut)
That politician is probably relevant…probably someone’s dad, if HypMic taught me anything.
LOL, a beef. They call this stuff “beef”? Where’s the chicken? (<- joke from HypMic)
Haemanthus…apparently a flowering plant from S. Africa.
That’s rare, you don’t see Canadians in anime all that much. I was just thinking as I came home from volunteering how you know British people all have fancy names like William and Australians are Johnno, Danno etc., but Canadians? No clue. Update: Apparently you’d call one Arnold or something just as generic…?
Why are all foreigners in anime half-Japanese with the mother being the Japanese side, anyway?...Because people can make their character speak Japanese while looking foreign. Right. Moving right along.
Ahh…I understand your plight all too well, Reki.
…Hmm. It seems Reki’s surname is written kiya, but read “Kyan”. His name literally translates to “history (calendar/age) of bravery (military might)” Update: Turns out his surname is 3 characters (read “kiyan”, although I’ve never seen that final character ever being read as “n”) and his first name is one, so his first name is just “history (calendar/age)”.
Even I suck at balancing on bikes and stuff (…yeah, I still can’t ride a bike even though I’ve done so many other things in my life) and I know you have to support yourself with one foot on the ground before you do things like trick flips. I may not have observed Tony Hawk all that much, but he was on the periphery of my knowledge.
“What’s your hourly wage?” – Ouch, I feel ya, Langa.
Koko ni netete actually means “Lie down here”, but…okay.
These eyecatches are cute.
That’s a cute fox.
Yikes! 60 mph = approx. 97 km/h!!!
Random umeboshi, LOL.
Aghhhhhhhhhhh! Cherry Blossom’s so pretty~! I love him already!
Thank you, based Bones!
Something that can be enjoyed, even without sound: this is why I enjoy both action and comedy anime!
Okinawa? We’re in Okinawa?
Well, that was cool! I didn’t even ask where the location was until the end. Update: Why is this anime sometimes called Sk8 the Infinity anyway…?
Horimiya 1
Horimiya…I’ve been aware of this series for a while. There’s even a Chinese volume of it at a library close to me, although due to contact tracing I haven’t bothered to check it out.
Oh, I bet Hori is the otaku!
Ooh, Marketing Script!
Because I’ve been behind on the premieres, I’ve seen enough to know this boy with the chain is Miyamura.
…argh! Miyamura is cute! Y’all were right!!! (<- likes blushing bois)
I bet there’s going to be an emergency meeting!
“Sorry, it’s egg time!” – Oh, I’m laughing so hard! So that’s the context behind the Wonder Egg Priority meme!
“…see these?!” – Well, it’s not like you have a tattoo or some-*Miyamura shows his tattoos* Never mind…
Oh, I just realised they even animate the minute movements of the eyes Miyamura does…cool.
Notice how Miyamura is blocked from the other guy due to the window.
Miyamura goes “Ishikawa-kun” but “Hori-san”…hmm. No wonder he’s letting Ishikawa get Hori.
The problem I find with romance series is that they’re generally tied to heteronormativity. Hori is coded with red silhouettes and Miyamura with blue…*sigh* Whatever happened to gender ambiguity?
Good heavens, what is up with this ED?! It looks like Pocoyo! (…Does anyone else know that cartoon…?) Aside from that quibble, this anime is great though.
Mushoku Tensei 1
Apparently this is the grandad of all isekai. Why it took so long for an anime of this…who knows?
…and of course this guy’s a loser virgin. Go figure.
*sighhhhhhhhh* He’s just ogling this woman’s boobs…
…oh, sorry. I was so distracted by the man candy, I didn’t care about Rudy.
I-It’s actually quite refreshing to not have an OP protagonist from the get-go for once. (Or maybe I’ve developed such a disdain for isekai since SAO rolled around that everything here suddenly feels fresh.)
You can see the birthplace of isekai without having watched any of the others right here, it looks like.
“…what’s the point of incantations?” – To make it easier for you to cast spells, I gue-spoke too soon.
…wow, they shamelessly showed off Rudy’s privates. I know he’s still young at this stage, but that reminds me of how I dropped Dragon Ball around the time Goku was shown the same way (which is…very early on, by my own admission).
I believe, based on the name of the spinoff I see in the 7 Seas emails, the magic tutor is called Roxy.
You’re thinking about marriage?! At your (reincarnated) age?!
Oh no! The tree again!
LOL, Rudy’s acting like a kid who’s been in COVID lockdown for a while.
I think what most of the isekai that spun off from here missed is that the loser is job age. Losers at life at job age are relatable and high school geniuses are relatable (albeit sometimes insufferable), but losers who become NEETs for no reason whatsoever and then get banged up by Truck-kun are not.
Anyways, this was good, but a risky kind of good, since it seems like this male gaze will continue to be around as Rudy gets older.
Update: Dropped after learning Rudy was a paedophile in his past life.
Update 2: Apparently the anime toned down this paedophilic tendency of Rudy’s, so...now the verdict is that I move on while I let other people tell me if this is true of the anime or not.
Kemono Jihen 1
“Kemono Jihen” means something like “creature incidents”. I wonder why Funimation didn’t change the name…?
Kabane means “summer wing”.
Kanoko Villa, I’d assume, is named after the deer (the name means “deer’s child”).
My experience with Sho Aimoto (creator of this manga) is reading a bit of Hokenshitsu no Shinigami. (That, by the way, reminds me of Nube, but it’s nothing spectacular.) However, Hokenshitsu no Shinigami has a very detailed artstyle…That’s why I’m pretty shocked Kemono Jihen has such a scratchy one…
Ooh, edamame!
Oh, I see…this is like Furuba or a werewolf story, huh? Rather than a Natsume Yuujincho sort of thing.
…I thought Inugami and Dorotabo had seen everything of each other because of bathing together…I guess not, then.
…is Yataro going to die?
It seems the “immortal demons” are oni, so…why subtitle them as “immortal demons” and not just “demons”?
Ohhhhhhhh…this shite’s good. It seems to have a throwback feeling to it, moreso than even Yashahime or a lot of the sequels I’ve seen recently.
Cells at Work!! 2
I was going to move right along to Wonder Egg Priority because I’m really behind on the debuts right now, but I accidentally opened this up while I was cleaning up so I might as well watch another episode or two before setting it aside.
He’s dead, Jim. (<-joking)
…gosh, these walls look like Hover all over again and that’s from 1995…
LOL, these background cells don’t even have any details. They’re basically stick figures with fat bodies…
I think that phrase that appeared, “Take good care of B Cell!”, may be a pun on Give My Regards to Black Jack (written with similar Japanese, “B Cell wo Yoroshiku!” vs. “Black Jack ni Yoroshiku!”).
LOL, “you sure have the guts”…while they’re in the guts.
The certificate says something about it being presented to someone in the face of bravery, I think (<- just looked at it briefly).
“You have a good head on your shoulders,” says the T cell as WBC struggles with the disguise…stuck on his head.
Wonder Egg Priority 1
I’ve been hearing this series is surreal, but no more surreal than Flip Flappers. So…I don’t know if I’ll like it or not.
What’s this K?(?96…?
There’s a sunflower on her raincoat…so that’s why I saw a post called “You’re the sunflower”. Personally, that just reminds me of Post Malone.
Those Seeno Evils…they’re CGI, aren’t they?
As Boueibu once said (but I may be paraphrasing here), “nothing is more scary than free”.
…to be honest with you, I haven’t had a best friend for at least 2 years now. I only really feel close to people who are like me and who I have sustained contact with over many years, so I end up cutting contact with people after we part ways and never trying to fix it.
I always find it slightly absurd when anime girls get a little pudgy and go, “I’m so fat!” (See, for instance, the Dumbbell series.) Or, in this case, Ai’s going, “I’m so ugly!” when there’s nothing wrong with her. She’s only a bit different from everyone else due to her heterochromia - she doesn't have any physical or mental difficulties.
IChu 1
Here for Ume and, of course, dem bois. Bring it!
I seem to remember one of the magazines called an “Ichu” “an idol egg” (i.e. a fledgling idol)…More egg puns for me, then.
I found him! Ume! He’s Akira Mitsurugi! Update: Turns out that’s Toshiyuki Toyonaga…Oops. (Ume is actually Lucas from I*B.)
Huh? For a second, I imagined Akira with a dubbed voice. Of course, I could only be dreaming, because idol anime normally don’t get dubs, but…it was interesting to think about.
LOL, “Onsta”.
This Akio-type character is popular lately. The sort who’s timid but has an outstanding talent they themselves might not see.
…uh, but Kocho means “Principal”…?
An idol bear?!
Torahiko is crazy…(Note the tigers. Tora = tiger.)
Specifically, that’s black coffee with no sugar.
As much as I want to keep watching this, I’ll hit pause on it here. There’s much better offerings this season.
YuruCamp s2 1
…grandpa’s writing is so…neat.
*glares at CGI car…*
This OP just doesn’t compare to Shiny Days, y’know…?
OOPArts.
Talking pine cones! They’re back!
Curry rice! Literally had some of the Japanese-style stuff the other day. It was great.
All this talk about jobs…I personally don’t like jobs because I like to work at my own pace (hence one reason why I’m working on being a translator), but…money…I’m jealous, girls.
I’m trying not to rely on the subs for those texts that appear on the screen so that I can keep my reading skills up…I kept up with them for the most part…but then I got distracted by the croquette sign at one point…
“…buy you some local food?” – That’s omiyage, normally translated “souvenirs”. “Local food” actually does make more sense in that gap, though.
…man, I’m jealous that the girls all got jobs suitable for their personalities and everything. Lil’ ol’ antisocial me sucks at retail, even after 2 years.
Design-bu 1
LOL, that man and his bunny. Update: That’s Unabara-san.
…geez, these utaite are everywhere now. I’ve seen 96neko, USSS, Eve and more being more central to anime song creation…
Thise characters in the OP seal (<-the stamp, not the animal) are saiyou, meaning “recruited”, or in this case, “accepted”.
OEM = original equipment manufacturer.
Hrm…you can tell it’s a giraffe by description, but…that “base everything on the horse” is interesting as you could count several things as horse derivatives. Also, the angels’ names are all standard Japanese names with natural components to them (Ueda = upright rice field, Shimoda = frost rice field etc).
Is this pink-themed guy…a guy? Or a crossdresser? Update: That’s Kanamori-san.
I like how the suits have little wing-like flaps. Also the wings on Shimoda’s back.
…I never thought an anime episode would make me so concerned about giraffes.
That guy in the green I remember from the Wave x Tendebu (Heaven’s Design Team) collab, his name is Kimura.
Oh, so there is a bird like that!
The random wiggling the chibis do in these short segments…it’s a bit disorienting. (<-Just a small quibble of mine.)
Oh! Galapagos effect!
Agonistic: “polemical; combative.” I thought they meant “antagonistic”.
Oh man, that punch line was great! It took me a while to get into the spirit of it, but this anime is great!
Update: Oh, that’s where those nature names come from! They’re actually meant to be gods! (Or…named after gods…?) Also, Ueda vs. Shimoda (the “shimo” could be the kanji for “below”).
Ex-Arm 1
I’ve heard this anime looks bad…even well before its debut. How bad? Let’s find out.
*stifles laughter* From the first pan, I know this anime is doomed on my list. Even Praeter was better than this!
*stifles laughter again* This OP really does look as bad as the stuff I was seeing prior to winter 2021! Like a game I shouldn’t take out of my archives! (It’s not as bad as Hover’s graphics, but still…that’s from 1995. Cut it some slack.)
That’s the 2nd Kimura this season…
Yugg is just…ugly. Never try to render elaborate eyelashes in CGI again, people.
Dimension High School was better than this because at least that had puzzles. This is even jankier than that!
Wait, why is Akira 3D when his dad is 2D? It’s not that obvious, but I notice these things. Update: That’s not his dad…but close enough. (That’s his brother.)
…and here comes Truck-kun! (LOL)
This would be good…if it weren’t rendered in the jankiest CGI known to man…
Alma’s gun strike doesn’t have a lot of force to it.
The fire is rendered so terribly…*stifles laughter*
This part with a disembodied Akira is what I assume I got up at 6 am for…but I can’t hear it, due to background noise. Remind me to confirm this later. (Minami’s mouth is rendered so terribly…augh.)
No force to any of these recent motions, either.
LOL, this censorship.
Wave 1
Ever since this project was announced, I’ve been watching developments unfold on Anime News Network. I knew it would get an anime or something similar I could follow…and now here I am. I mentioned in the Sk8 comments I have basically zero knowledge of surfing, so…this is very unexpected, in one sense.
Was that a drone…?
“Wizard of the Waifu Board”?! Are you kidding me?! (LOL)
There seem to be shots where I can see the CGI here, but…anything’s better than Ex-Arm. Let’s say that.
Actually…yappe is a derivative of yabai, meaning “cool” or “crap” (in an ironic sense). So it would probably be better to translate it as “Surfing’s the greatest!” or “Surfing’s the coolest!” Anyways, what I was thinking before I was going to say this was that the waves are so enticingly animated, it feels like a summer anime. Basically the only other anime I’ve ever said that for is Grand Blue.
If I’m understanding where Isokichi’s name comes from right, “iso” is the character for seashore or a rocky beach (磯).
LOL, the teacher just wrote “Show must go on.”
Hayama, Kanagawa. Kanagawa’s capital is Yokohama, so it’s not quite Tokyo, but somewhat close.
“Murphy”? I have zero clue what that means.
Oh, I see. The title is translated that way due to context. Now that I can accept.
I just burst out into laughter when I realised Nalu hasn’t dropped or put down his ukulele once.
BSD Wan! 1
Here comes my past to haunt me…aside from me being a fan of BSD, I’m here because I influenced this series. How so? Once upon a time in the now-distant year of 2016, I was a scanlator for a brief period. Most of the work I’ve done hasn’t influenced the world at large, but this is the most influential manga I had a hand in working on.
Oh no! They’re starting with the dog AU?! (That comes from pretty far into the manga, IIRC. Further than my work was on it, at least.)
It’s Rashomon, but Rashoken (that last bit means “dog”). Hence Ruffshomon.
Basically, they just insert dog-related words everywhere…don’t make me explain every one!
Ouch, I can only imagine how much pain it was to translate Inu Shikkaku. Literally, it’s “No Longer a Dog”, but how would anyone make it in line with the other puns…?
I wasn’t fully aware of how the dog AU was connected to the main Wan series because I haven’t really looked at it after I quit due to aggregators, but…that was a nice fakeout. Also, I was concerned as to whether this was going to be a full-length ep or a short…seems like it’s a 10 minute short, so I have more chances of taking it.
…oh gosh, that pose! I remember it! I worked on this one! (Now that I know it’s a TV short, I won’t cover future episodes, but I want to at least finish this one because I started it.)
I think they added a bit there. I remember Kunikida’s and Yosano’s were in the manga, but not the other members or Fukuzawa going “the wind is smiling” + Kenji working on the roof at the start.
Oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I remember Rampo. I think I had to approximate how he would say stuff with Pocky in his mouth, but Slug (current scanlator) went the extra mile and stuck food in his mouth to do the same panel.
It seems to make a short ep., they strung a bunch of the chapters together. Also, I don’t think we ever found out what Yosano’s puddle was and that was…probably for the better.
Oh yeah…I think I remember this one.
Now I remember it! I remember having fun explaining what a youkan was.
Whoa, Higuchi scrapped the SFX! That wasn’t in the original…
The ED seems to be an Atsushi cover of Namae wo Yobu yo.
Oh noooooooooooo! The flower gazing episode! That’s the one I remember most, because I was trying to figure out how to translate 移動 while making it smooth-sounding English…(I remember the final result was something like, “Move! Move~!”
Dr Stone: Stone Wars 1
Final debut! Let’s go~!
The last time this series was on the air was about 1 year ago. I can remember that far back…
I like how that recap is framed as Gen talking to the kids.
Senku overcomes every problem with science.
…not much to comment on here.

ANOTHER TAG ASHJHJASD
extra long tag game (aka a tmi that no one particularly cares for)

Tumblr media
ONE
tell me the first song that made you stan your current fave group and why did your faves attract you so much?
of course, none other than king943 hSJADJSAJHAS. He’s a little secret I’ll let you all in on: the first person I actually noticed in TXT was,,,,,,, Kang Taehyun hSDHJAHJSDAHSA but he wasn’t my bias. I just thought he was cute (also amused me bc my BTS bias was Taehyung and I found a guy named Taehyun cute), but I didn’t stan them then. I started stanning when I saw ONE DREAM.TXT where they talked to BTS and found them really cute and endearing. Looking into them, they were wild, and chaotic and so fun and also i got rEAAAALLY attached to Soobin. So here I am. There u go, my stanning story.
Tumblr media
TWO
rule: answer the ten questions and write your own!
what’s your unrealistic goal for life?
becoming a famous actress or singer hJSHADJSA
if you had known that we would be in a global pandemic, what’s one thing that you would’ve done before things shut down (if they have for you)?
Went to a theme park. I miss going to theme parks 🥺
what’s an unconventional thing that you carry around with you when you go out?
hmmm most of the time i just go out with just my phone and money unless I need to bring a bag due to safety concerns/more items needed. So I’d say nothing unconventional.
favourite type of plushies and why?
God do I seem boring hsahsajjsa but i wasn’t too big on plushies. I had a gigantic teddy bear named Justin when I was a kid (it’s a bear with shades that my brother gave me) and I used to buy plushies whenever I’m in disneyland, it’s all in my sister’s reading lounge. The only plushie in my room now is a Mollang doll wearing like a blue shirt/dress, it’s my favorite rn It’s squishyyyy
favourite song right now?
right now, it’s Work It by Sabrina Carpenter.
something that you’ve always wanted to learn?
Dancing (i literally suck. i have no idea how. no joke), Vocal Lessons (had some lessons briefly for like a year but i stopped and want to take some again), music production, acting, hosting
tell a funny story about yourself (or just something that you’ve witnessed)
ok okok so one time in our class groupchat we were talking about class elections for officers. There were muse votes and some people were saying they want me to be the muse but i didnt want to bc i was busy with work. Then they started saying that they want me to be the muse and this guy that i rejected be the escort. while this is happening, i was simping hard for soobin in another chat. anyways, i got everything mixed up and accidentally sent the soobin simp stuff to the class chat and everyone thought i was simping for the classmate i rejected i was so asHAMED.
headphones or speakers? why?
speakers! idk i just like blastic the music loud.
craving any food right now? what are you craving?
anything with cheese
which music streaming platform do you prefer? why?
spotify since its free for me askjjksad someone pays for my subscription lmaooo
😌✌️
Tumblr media
questions from cj to me:
android or apple? why?
APPLE because im loyal 😌 and i guess im just used to it so its easier to use for me + all my gadgets at home are mac
words of affirmation or physical affection? why?
I think there should be a good balance of both. The words will have the ability to give you this sense of comfort and satisfaction and you know just overall a peace of mind when you hear the right words??? and physical affection bc sometimes it’s just better to get a hug or a kiss isntead of talking yk? actions speak louder than words sometimes
bean bag or rocking chair? why?
Honestly, this would depend. If I’m reading a book and feeling very vintage with a hot cup of coffee, definitely a rocking chair. If I’m watching TV and basically just chilling I’d go for Bean Bag. I like maintaining the atmosphere.
do you view a half-filled glass as half-full or half-empty or an in-between? why? (go as deep as you can)
I view it as in-between, because there’s always room for improvement. There’s always things to change, and consider, and make better. There’s no such thing as perfect.
If someone were to grant your wish right now, what would it be and why?
Please stop corona right now and let everyone go back to their daily lives and please let me attend a TXT concert bls im begging on my kNEES
if someone were to give you anything you want right now, what would it be and why? (something that can be held)
Give me Soobin I just want to give him a hug. this is valid i can hold him
favorite season and why
Winter! Even if I’ve never experienced snow or winter before, the whole idea of snow is just really fun and endearing to me. One of my bucketlists is to see snow in real life. I think it has to do with the fact that I’ve always been this person to prefer the cold over heat.
what made you enter tumblr?
I’ve always been here! Just not in kpop tumblr. I’ve since deleted my old accounts and shame  but i came back to write. It’s always been so stress-relieving to me, to write without any expectations on my back because I’m thinking about grades or a competition. Also Soobin simping is a daily thing and I gotta release it somewhere man
are you happy with where you are in life right now? why or why not?
Yes. I may not be the richest or the prettiest, or smartest or whatever, but I have a good family that loves me. I have good friends that support me and I have TXT and BTS to help me cope when things get overwhelming. I have a job that gives me a little bit of income (it’s not too common for college students here to get jobs like in the US, most of them just focus on acads) and all the means to continue my education amidst the pandemic. So really, I’m grateful for where I am now.
to see the boys in real life but for it to happen only once in your lifetime, or to meet the boys via online fan meeting as many times as you can in your lifetime? why?
Why do you have to do me dirty cj,,,,, prolly online. I may not get to hug them or anything but I get to talk to them still. As may times as I want to. And as a girl whose sanity literally just depends on Soobin giggles rn it’ll be very therapeutic to me to see them and talk to them as much as I could, even just through a screen.
QUESTIONS FROM ME TO YOU:
Cinema or Netflix? Why?
Fire or Rain? Why?
What’s the worst experience you’ve had as a KPOP stan?
How do you handle stress?
Favorite Disney Princess and why?
Which fictional character do you say you relate the most to?
How did you get into KPOP?
What kind of merch you got 👀
Would you date a KPOP idol? What would you do if you do date one? (doesnt have to be your bias, just wanna see what y’all would do)
Would you rather be with someone you love but doesn’t love you back or be with someone that loves yu but you don’t love them back? (Or, as the Filipinos would say, Mahal ko o Mahal Ako)

Shingeki no Kyojin dj -Mihitsu no Koi ni Yoru Ai
Tumblr media
Title: Shingeki no Kyojin dj -Mihitsu no Koi ni Yoru Ai
Media: Doujinshi, BL, Written by Satoukibi Ame Susu
Yandere(s): Eren Yeager
Yandere Scale: 4/5
Criticism written by: Julie
Editor: Kai
The Review:
Sigh. I feel like by writing this review I’m basically opening the gates of Hell. Anyways, Julie here, back again with another review. This review today is sort of “special” in a sense that this is the first doujinshi/fan-fiction that’s ever been reviewed on ThatYandereCritic.
I’m very sorry to anyone who would never view Eren Yeager the same way again after reading this post. Please take this moment to say goodbye to the real sweet boy you know.
Tumblr media
Ok, now for the real tea. I have to be completely honest with you guys...This Attack on Titan omegaverse is actually pretty good. Now I’m not a yaoi shipper but I will say that the only type of pairing I can mentally see and accept is: Levi as a bottom and Eren is a top, but as the puppy seme type. Ahem, regardless of how you feel about my ship taste, let’s get on to the review.
As I’ve mentioned, this story is based on an omega verse; which just means that in this universe there are three more categories on top of gender. Consider it as a caste system. You have your Alphas (top of the pack, elites of the world, cream of the crop), Betas (common average people who make up the majority of the population), and then lastly omegas, (the bottom feeders). Omegas are the only ones who go through uncontrollable heat and have to take pills in order to suppress their horniness. And oh yeah, omega males can get pregnant lol.
So the “story” is basically Levi ordering Eren to throw away some files, not knowing that his heat suppressants were in the bunch as well; oops. Eren however, knows exactly what’s up and uses Levi’s heat to his advantage and...Well, you guys can just imagine what happens next.
I’ll be honest with you guys, the story is borderline lust at first sight, but what do you honestly expect for a yaoi and omegaverse (Yandere porn essentially)?
Tumblr media
Eren does have his Yandere moments though...that’s only mostly triggered when they’re in bed lmao. Overall, it’s a really good story if your into that smutty goodness. The doujinshi is also on the darker side so make sure your prepared for that. You’ll see why Eren got a high score lmao.
Overall score: 9/10
