"Standoff"
Season 1 Episode 9: "Standoff"
“Officer Bradford’s wife is found shot but alive, and he vows to track down the man responsible: Officer Nolan must protect his home and the truth after a home invasion attack”
Original Air Date: January 8, 2019
Written By: Alexi Hawley
Directed By: John Terlesky
Tumblr media
Back again with another Shop Drop!! Episode 9 is the episode that aired after coming back from the winter hiatus! So for a good month, we are left wondering what happened to not only Isabel, but with John and Lucy…so let’s find out, shall we?!
__________________________________________________
The episode picks up exactly where we left off, with John being attacked by the victims brother, who is clearly out for revenge.  Lucy listens in and she makes the final decision to make herself known to distract the brother to give John enough leverage to knock him on his ass.  John calls in the attack and Lucy is on edge and in panic mode.  She does not want to get seen or caught being at Johns, given their whole predicament and especially at 1 in the morning aka a booty call.  Lucy leaves the house before any of the cops and ambulances come.  Not for nothing, she is trying to save her ass and whose to blame her.
Tumblr media
I think its’ clear that Lucy is starting to move on from this relationship with John.  She clearly knows that the back tracking and their previous nights hook up was a mistake, and like she said, a “heat of the moment” type of thing but John seems a bit more hesitant to let her go so easily.
For just being attacked, John is very cool, calm and collected; a very stark difference from how his demeanor was in the last episode.  He answers all of Commander West and Captain Anderson questions with no hesitation.  Commander West continues to ask John questions regarding the previous nights invasion, especially because now that the brother awoke, and starting to talk, he just so happens to mention that he heard a second voice in the house last night, but John sticks to his original story…that he was alone, much to Officer Wests dismay.  When all units are called to the apartment, the entire precinct scrambles and makes their way over, including Officer West and John.  I don’t know what Officer West sees when he watches John arrest one of Vance guys, but it must have been something special, because it makes him drop all investigations on John.
The next morning, Captain Anderson notifies John that he is cleared in the fatal shooting of his victim, but there are some holes that are starting to gape in his statement and the investigation in the home invasion from the previous night.  John is sequestered to front desk duty until the investigation can clear.  John is very much out of his element at the front desk he is meant to be out on patrol, that’s a given.
Tim and Angela are out searching for Isabel and they get notified that they found her shot and unconscious in the dumpster.  Tim goes into fight or flight mode, all is forgotten in that moment as he watches her getting wheeled into the ambulance, “Im here baby, Im here”.  At the end of the day, Isabel is still his wife, and nothing else matters.
The Tim we see in the the office with Grey is clearly a different Tim than when we saw him in the first episode.  It’s like he’s speechless, somber.  Isabel is the only thing that’s on his mind and running through his thoughts, nothing and nobody else.  The only mission that Tim sees now is getting Vance, who shot Isabel.
All hands are on deck in getting Vance and the guys involved in Isabels shooting, and we are back to the entire ensemble working together, which is what we love about this show.
We are getting itty bitty crumbs of Tim and Lucy in this episode.   Lucy confronts Tim and gives him her sympathies regarding Isabel, which he seems to take it in stride. Tim has Lucy go gear up the shop and to make sure she includes the Bradford Special.  We see Tim and Lucy, Angela and Jackson and Talia in the parking lot of the apartment complex where they believe Vance and his men AND his pregnant baby mama are all being held up.  They are ready to take this guy down.  Before entering, we get introduced to The Bradford Special- a chest plate for inside the vest for added protection. I guess Tim has been in a situation similar to this one where his special came in handy..
Tim and Lucy find Cesiah's apartment and push their way in.  They need her to lure Vance to her in order to be successful in taking him down.  So when Cesiah calls Vance to come back,  low and behold Vance is in the damn complex hiding out and he knows the cops are there…and BAM! Shots fired towards Talia and Jackson AND Angela.  Jackson has zero hesitation with shooting back.  It’s only a few episodes after his previous freeze ups, so he is either over that, or he has been working on the side with maybe Angela in order to overcome his holds up over open fire.
I think a showdown is bound to happen.  Vance is outside the door with Cesiah, Tim and Lucy on the inside.  Tim and Lucys view gets blacked out by Vance’s men so they have to figure something else out.  Tim decides to take Lucy’s body cam and uses it as his eyes.  It’s a small moment, but its almost a little lesson that Tim teaches Lucy. “There’s a body cam app on your city issued phone” which Lucy opens up and together they use the body cam and the app to see what’s going on in the hallway. It really is an ingenious idea and I don’t know if Lucy would’ve thought about that on her own.
Tumblr media
Cesiah’s water breaks, and things are about to get a whole lot dicier, being stranded in the apartment, they have no other choice but to deliver the baby in the apartment.  Cesiah asks Lucy is she’s going to deliver her baby and before giving her an answer, she looks over to Tim.  Maybe its because she isn’t sure if it’s something she’s allowed to do, or she needs his approval to do it, but it’s the start of her always looking to get Tim’s approval and support on all of her decisions.
We don’t see it, but Lucy successfully delivers Cesiah’s baby and within seconds, Vances men enter the apartment, guns blazing and shoots Lucy right in the chest before she can even pull her gun out, knocking her cold out.  But did it hit her chest plate?  Honestly thank god for Tim and his special because as Lucy wakes and we hear and see Tim getting his ass beat by these men, Lucy removes her chest plate and the bullet is right in the middle of it.  Lucy taps in and starts double teaming these guys with Tim, I love watching this side of Lucy.
The detectives, Wolfe and Vestri end up at the apartment building, but unfortunately, they don’t know what they are riding up to and the second the elevator doors open, guns are blazing and shots are being fired form everywhere and both are immediately hit multiple times and they both go down.  Talia witnesses it all and comes to their rescue, and brings them to her safe zone, but Detective Vestri dies from the bullet wounds.
The episode starts to end with Commander West and Captain Anderson informing John that he is cleared of everything, from the fatal shooting to the home invasion.  It’s been a long few days for John.
Tim is at Isabels bedside at the hospital and when she wakes up, she whispers to Tim, “I didn’t know that rock bottom had a basement”.  I think its safe to assume that being shot in the head, on the brink of death, was her rock bottom and there is nothing but healing and recovery to happen from there.  What her recovery looks like, only time will tell, but will Tim be a part of it, or even in her future as a recovering addict?  It almost is feeling like the beginning of the end for them.
Tumblr media
In the final moments, we see Lucy back at Johns house again, and I think they come to a mutual understanding and decision that even though their romantic aspect of their relationship is over, that doesn’t mean that their friendship has to also be over and they decide to be real friends; friends who can talk about their days with each other, real friends.  I think they are going to be way more successful at that type of relationship.  And with that, I truly believe the “Nucy” of it all has come to a complete close. Finally!
Tumblr media
______________________________________________________________
Honorable Mention: The Special Effects Department on this show.  They know how to do their jobs and do it good too.
Episode Peak: Isabel Surviving
Episode Pit: Detective Vestri Dying
Quote of the Episode: “The world isn’t black and white.  And it won’t be better with us off the force.  We’re out there making a difference.  Thank about everybody you have helped.  Now think about what would have happened if you weren’t there.” ~ Lucy Chen
Episode Rating: 8/10.  I forgot how much I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.  It was a very fast paced, action filled one, which I have quickly found out I love.  The only downside to these earlier episodes is the lack of Tim and Lucy, but I know that we’re getting a whole lot more of them soon.  One of my blog readers mentioned to me that, this episode and the previous one almost felt like wrap up episodes for a few of the storylines that they catered too, hence why they were so heavily focused on Isabel and Tim and John and Lucy.  With all that being said, I really, really liked this one!
Side Note: I definitely did not go in order with my recap for this episode, I actually felt like I was all over the place with this one, but everything came to me so quickly and I didn’t know how else to write everything down, I hope it wasn’t too crazy!
Until next time on, “Get in the Shop”…!!!

chenford prompts/ideas
I hope it's okay to just throw prompts out like this. I'm still very new to this fandom but very invested in Chenford (being caught up with a show is the worst, why do I fall in love with these types of ships until I know how it ends?), so much so I dusted out an old tumblr account and posted a ramble on ao3. I'm down bad for these clueless fictional idiots. * What if Armstrong didn't take Caleb's deal in 2x11? As in, he arrests Caleb instead of going with him. It wouldn't change them finding Lucy, I don't think, but could give some very nice (and by that I mean angsty af) interactions between Caleb and the others. Namely Tim, of course. * Tim is the one who goes to the prison with Nolan, so he's the one who goes with Nolan to the house to confront Caleb. Does Caleb still die in the same way? Does he live? Does Tim have to sit and watch the video feed for those agonising seconds while he waits for the rest of the team to touch down, after realising Lucy isn't in the barrel in the house? * What if Tim didn't give Lucy the 'Bradford special' back in 1x09, and she still gets shot? Any excuse for feral/protective Tim, especially since he'd be even more feral after Isabel's shooting. * What if, to help Jackson, Lucy offers to switch places and become's Stanton's rookie for that last month. What's the worst that could happen? * Lucy is exposed in 1x20 instead of Tim. * Lucy has serious thoughts about breaking the door down in 1x20 when Tim is attacked * Both Tim and Lucy are exposed in 1x20 and have to quarantine together * Not so much Chenford, though obviously Chenford, but just people supporting Lucy after Jackson's death. Give Lucy all the hugs please. * One of those 5 times fics but revolving around Lucy's moonstone ring. * Lucy gets greenlit instead of Nolan * Tim helping Lucy to wash her hair after she'd been injured in some way. Not sexual, not necessarily platonic, just helping. Either as friends or established lovers, post break-up or pre. Even a fully clothed over the basin 'don't expect me to dry it too, Boot' because he felt guilty. I just love a good bit of non-sexual TLC sometimes. * Honestly, same as above but with Jackson. So definitely platonic but just something sweet and soft. Lucy needs TLC, okay? I have feelings about this. * Overprotective (not necessarily 'I have feelings for her' but, ya know, we love a clueless Tim) Tim looking out for Lucy (in that weird way of his) with some of the more asshole officers/civilians they meet through her training/time as P2. Especially if she pisses off an asshole cop (akin to Stanton. If not Stanton. We hate Stanton) for some mundane reason, and Tim has to have her back when it escalates. * Lucy accidentally pisses off a very high ranking criminal. Cue everyone protecting Lucy even though she doesn't need protecting. * Tim and Lucy chat after the Stanton confrontation. * Lucy's ill or mildly injured but pushes through/stays in work. Tim keeps pushing her and she makes a mistake and/or gets hurt. Angela, Bishop, Harper, or Grey talk with him, and make him realise he has to know when to stop pushing sometimes. * Lucy's had a particularly bad day with some shitty criminals/civilians/officers. Tim thinks he gets it but he can't, not really, so his brand of tough love isn't working as he wants it to. Lopez/Harper/Bishop and/or even Lucy try to get him to understand he'll never understand what it's like to be a woman (and one of colour) on patrol. * Lopez/Harper/Bishop etc take Lucy out after said bad day. Tim can be there with Nolan if he wants. Jackson too. Jackson gets it more but everyone needs to hear how difficult it can be. Mainly ladies supporting ladies. * And if anyone wants to take a proper shot at the long-form disjointed ramble fic I did, or take ideas from it, please do. Basically post-break up, Lucy's in a bad place and Tim goes to comfort her and I have a lot of feelings about Jackson being gone and Lucy not having the support network she should with Tim and Tamara leaving her - ao3 ramble here
That should be it for now, at least while I keep working through episodes properly (also, ugh, watching these early episodes with Nolan/Lucy stuff is just...ick after binging all the Chenford stuff first ^_^). Thank you to anyone who takes these, you're a very talented fandom with some gorgeous writers! I'm working my way through Chenford fics on ao3, but if any of these have been done before please spread the love and share some links/reccs <3

Alright, next question: we’ve done favorite Chenford episodes, but what are your 5 favorite non-Chenford episodes and/or storylines and/or multi-episode arcs?
I sort of answered this one here, but that was specifically about favourite non-Chenford episodes, so I'm going to answer this with a mix of episodes and storylines/arcs.
It's really, really hard for me to separate Chenford from The Rookie, because clearly they're my favourite part (shocking, I know). So there are certainly more I'd love to include in this list, but tried to exclude because while I love every part of them, I love the Chenford parts most of all. (Looking at you Standoff (1x09) and Plain Clothes Day (1x14) and about a dozen more....)
1. The Dark Side (2x10) and Day of Death (2x11) - Sorry not sorry, this is absolutely the top of the list. Yes, lots of Chenford, which we love, but as an overall arc it's phenomenal. Everything from the Lucy/Jackson/Nolan/Armstrong bar night to the Angela/Wesley parts to the perfect creepiness of Rosalind Dyer to (yes, duh) the Chenford of it all. And I'll rave about the acting and the scenery and the sound editing (the song choices, and of course the use of silence) until the end of time, because it's just so, so good. (I'm resisting the urge to add Now and Then (2x12) to this, because while it's still a part of the arc, it leans more heavily on the Chenford side... but I can't leave this without celebrating them continuing the story beyond just the little bubble of those two episodes. It's truly refreshing that they didn't gloss over Lucy's recovery and have everything just back to normal right away.)
Tumblr media
2. Safety (2x07) - I yammered on a bit about this here, but I LOVE this episode, and Tim and Lucy don't interact in it at all. I don't think there's anything I dislike? Football Tim cold open ✅, Tim and Nyla and the challenge coins ✅, the beginning of the Lucy/Nyla duo of awesome (seriously, everything at the bomber's house) ✅, Angela being a sassy queen in her security gig ✅, and how Tim and Jackson's football storyline suddenly tied in with Angela's story ✅. One of my absolute faves!
Tumblr media
3. Man of Honor (3x10), Triple Duty (3x13), and Threshold (3x14) - I'm specifically talking about Tim as Angela's man of honor. Their friendship is amazing, and seeing this all play out is so much fun. Tim bursting into the bridal shop ("you're going into labor?") is hilarious, and then him helping her find a dress?? Ugh my heart! THIS FRIENDSHIP!!! And then Tim and Nolan trying to reduce the guest list, and Tim and Jackson showing up with riot shields??? I love it all so much. (Doesn't hurt that it culminates with Tim in a tux *fans self*)
Tumblr media
4. The Q Word (2x19), The Hunt (2x20), and Consequences (3x01) - I'll give credit where credit is due, I absolutely did not see the Armstrong twist coming. It all seems glaringly obvious now, but hindsight is 20/20. This is one of my favourite arcs. It was unexpected, a great Nolan/Harper team up, brought Rosalind back, and just really exciting to watch. (And while I don't hate Nolan like so many others, I do enjoy when he gets knocked off his pedestal a little bit and faces some real challenges.)
Tumblr media
5. Greenlight (1x12) - PAIN. I miss Andersen so much, she was an absolute badass. I can't watch this without crying, and that alone speaks to the power of this episode.
Tumblr media
Oh, and for shits and giggles, I'm also going to name my least favourite...
I hate, hate, hate that arsonist arc from early season 4. It was painfully obvious who the real killer was - literally the moment I saw him I was like "yup, there's your guy". It was just too much. It felt like a departure from the overall tone of the show, just way too dark, and yet somehow also leaned into a bit of a cartoonish depiction of a villain? The worst.
(Oh, and the double dose of shoving of The Rookie Feds down our throats backdoor pilot for The Rookie Feds is a close second... hated everything about it.)
Part of me wanted to add Under Siege (5x22) to the favorite arcs list, but since it's still ongoing, I will instead say I can't wait to see how to all plays out! Love seeing this team come together for each other!

Do you have any reccs for the last ask? I'm trying to place the one that's in the back of my head, so I'm wondering if you know.
You mean this ask correct? You know for the life of me I can't not think of a lot of examples. I know that they exist but I can't find them. Please help me followers! These are what I've got and some of them are kinda iffy:
The A-Team 2x23 "Curtain Call" (kinda)
The A-Team 5x13 "Without Reservations"
Legends of Tomorrow 2x03
The Rookie 4x06
Hawaii Five-0 6x25
Graceland 1x09

Hello! The ever-sweet and wonderful @marthaskane tagged me to share eight shows that define me/help you get to know me. Without further ado, the shows!
Alias (2001-2006)
Alias has taught me the value of old LiveJournal pages and the Wayback Machine more than any other show I've ever loved. I discovered this show in 2013 when it was on Netflix and then I spent a few months in Germany, where I spent too much money buying almost the entire show on iTunes because I could not comprehend going more than a day without Sydney Bristow with me.
2. The Clone Wars (2008-2013, 2014, 2020)
I remember when this show first aired and my siblings and I had a square dance at our school (very American, I know) so we had to DVR it. The next morning we snuck down early to watch it with the volume super low so we wouldn't wake up our parents. Few shows have continuously come back into my life the way this one has. I can track a lot of how I've changed as a fan through the different ways I've viewed this show over the last 15 years.
3. Fringe (2008-2013)
I've been rewatching this show since January of this year and can confirm: it is still a nearly perfect 100 episodes of TV. Fringe manages to perfect a lot of the plot lines and dynamics that appear in Alias (both are J.J. Abrams/his collaborators projects). It manages to walk the line between a procedural and a mythology-driven show beautifully and so clearly knows what message and themes it wants to share from the very first shot. If you like exploring messy family dynamics, action, and the X-Files, Fringe is a good option for you.
4. Gotham (2014-2019)
I historically have no cared much at all about Batman. He struck me as pretty boring in comparison to every other person he interacted with. Gotham change that for me (turns out he just needed to be put next to any even more boring guy, but I digress...). Loving this show is a lesson in looking past weird choices, wacky inconsistencies, and learning to just trust that writers will give you a fun ride, even if you understand less that 15% of it. It helped me remember that the sentence "I love this show" does not always mean "here is a perfect example of perfect storytelling" and just how freeing that can be. It also gave me a beautiful little group of friends who continue to make me smile on a regular basis.
5. Blindspot (2015-2020)
While this show may not be one I post about often, it was foundational for how I interact in fandom now. It was one of the first times I was active in a fandom from the start of the show. It was the first time I was in a fandom group chat and my Tumblr friends broke containment into being people I followed on Instagram and texted. I organized a Secret Santa. It was the first time I remember actively freaking out of promo photos (1x09 IYKYK) and synopses. Almost all the confidence I have when interacting in fandoms is from these experiences. And the plot is stellar.
6. Iron Fist (2017-2018)
I can't tell you how I ended up watching this. I do not know what prompted me to turn it on but I'm really glad I did. This show has so many amazing nuggets of amazingness and its shortcomings brought me together with two of my favorite people as we tried to understand what had gone wrong and where. (This is not a good ad for the show.) I love getting to play with stories and characters that have seemingly infinite potential and getting to do it with other people who are just as committed to the story as I was meant the world.
7. The Rookie (2018-present)
I fought against this one so hard. I did not want to get into it, but as my dash filled with those gifs of Lucy in the green dress and I had my wonderful friend pitching the show to me over and over, I caved. And I'm really glad I did. The experience of watching a long season over months, one week and one episode at a time, is so different than streaming or rewatching shows and I'd forgotten how much I missed it until I got to do it again for this show. My Tuesday livestreams with my lovely friend single-handedly pulled me through so many rough spots over the last year. For a procedural dramedy, The Rookie continues to serve up some of the best characters on TV right now and consistently delivers some of the best cold opens.
8. Prodigal Son (2019-I'm in denial)
The show that owns my heart and soul. The show I'd sell my organs to get new episodes of. Returning to this show, whether I'm writing fic, doing a TED Talk in my head about the psychology in the show, or actually watching an episode, consistently feels like coming home. I did not know it was possible for someone to stick their hand in your head and pull out a show custom-made for you, but that's what this is. The characters are all so perfectly imperfect and desperate to be better. The plots are just the perfect amount of bonkers. The show being a drama pretending to be a procedural is beautiful. If you'd told me in 2019 that a show about a profiler whose dad is a serial killer and they solve crimes together would be the show that would leave an indelible mark on my life, I would have rolled my eyes because that's so cliche. 2019!me had no idea what she was on about. But I'm glad she figured it out and randomly put on this little show one night that had continued to pull me through good days and bad days and everything in between.
As for tagging other people, anyone is welcome to join but I’ll specifically tag some people I know who haven't been tagged (I think): @electricbluebutterflies, @chenlucys, @shinythinx, @rojaswarren, @meandmyechoes, @padme-deserved-better, @whitesunlars, @harrows-bones, @bpdanakins, and @violetsandmagpies.

Note
Do we know if the season is 22 episodes or 20? Bc feds is 22 I read it on deadline I think and if they're pairing them up on Tuesday then it's better for them to end on the same day and feds had 1x09 last so when they come back it'll be for their tenth episode as well.
I mean, if Feds is getting 22 episodes then I’m sure they’ve coordinated it so that The Rookie gets that as well. It would be really strange if they gave their very new spinoff show more episodes than their already established and beloved host show. So I’m sure they’ll both have 22 episodes and end at the same time, especially since Alexi is trying to build his own universe with these two shows here so keeping the two shows running at the same times is kind of necessary, actually.
