Mike, Will, and the Only Lie They've Kept

As early as the first episode, the show makes clear that Mike and Will are the only friends who NEVER lie to each other. “Friends don’t lie.” In the first few minutes, Will tells Mike the truth about rolling a 7. In s2, Will is completely open with Mike about his visions, and Mike makes clear in words and deeds how much Will means to him:

Dustin and Lucas lied to Mike about the roll being a 7. El lied to the group, screwed with the compass, and led them away from the gate. Dustin hid Dart from the group. The series establishes that Will and Mike are the most honest characters in the party. Will usually only feels he can open up to Mike. Mike, meanwhile, more than anyone values honesty, and it's key to his leader role in the party. He enforces the party code, and he never lies on important things among them.

So isn't it strange that he starts lying to El in s3, and his entire arc in s4 is his difficulty “being honest” with El to say he loves her? Isn't that strange? And isn't it strange in s4 that Will is dropping truth bombs to Mike and El, telling them to stop lying and to be open about their feelings, but then to his BEST FRIEND, he lies for the first time about the painting?

Isn't that a lie that will come to light between these closest of friends? And isn't Mike lying about something, too, by not hugging his BEST FRIEND after months apart?

These two are honest with each other in a way they aren't with anyone else. Aren't they nurturing their ONLY LIE to each other?

And hasn't the show used s4 to reestablish that they ARE best friends again, who "don't lie" to each other?

Isn’t everything pointing toward Byler at this point?

there’s just... something so insane about the way the show circles back to wilhelm publicly confirming it was him in the video. he did exactly what he couldn’t do at the end of season one and the only way he got to that point was the development in season two. everything needed to fall apart. the traditions and systems holding wille back beforehand, needed to be exposed and seen explicitly by everyone; wille needed to go to therapy and work through the guilt he feels towards his family and the responsibilities he bares, simon needed to get to the realisation that it wasn’t wille’s unwillingness to be public with him — but that he literally couldn’t without upheaving everything. they needed to be apart, be messy, kiss other people and make mistakes — because it brought them right back to who they’ve always been. two boys in love vs the world. except this time, wille has the confidence to have agency, to take what was taken from him and reclaim it. with the prospect of august becoming crown prince and falling back into those traditions and keeping the systems upheld, he knew he had the power to change things and finally he’s in a place where he feels like he can.

Nick sank further into his chair as Max poured himself a drink. "That a problem?"

Max eyed the other man from the corner of his eye as the silence stretched between them. "Why would it be a problem?" he finally asked as he strode to his chair and slowly sat down. "She'd play the part well. And if you're as good of an agent as you claim to be, I'm sure you can come up with a reasonable explanation as to why you picked someone outside of the CIA to pose as your wife."

"I'm not talking about that," Nick said, tapping a finger on the armrest. "I mean, is it going to be a problem for you since she'll be alone with me."

Max chose not to respond as he brought his glass to his lips, choosing instead to look at the live feed on the laptop.

You were still asleep in bed, unaware of the men talking and watching you.

"Something wrong, Max?" Nick questioned, trying not to smirk when the darker haired man tore his gaze away from the screen.

"Nothing at all," he said after a beat. "Because wherever this assignment is I won't be far away."

"Think I'll double cross you? That's your thing."

"Yeah, but it's also your thing. You just happen to have a job title with what you do," Max said unapologetically. "My concern is her. She'll have to learn to trust you."

"And she'll have to learn to trust you all over again," Nick pointed out.

A hint of determination filled Max's blue eyes as he looked at the screen once more. "I earned it once. I can do it again."
