So it was said in TGWDLM that Paul used to babysit Alice for Bill. But in Black Friday, Paul forgets Tim's name, and calls him Pete. What are the chances that at some point, he babysat Pete for Ted?

This has probably been pointed out already, but I thought it was a fun detail, and it makes sense!

Paul being Tim's uncle means everything in the world for Emma's relationship with her family can we talk about that

offscreen, at least in the timeline of Jane's A Car, Emma's successfully become an integrated enough part of her family for them to consider her boyfriend family too. Paul's an influence that Tim refers back to. Emma has established an active role in Tim's life by implication and I am once again BEGGING the langs to let us SEE IT-

Okay, but let’s talk about Tim Houston:

This little boy lost his mother in a tragic accident a year before Black Friday takes place, presumably not long after Christmas. His father, unable to cope with his grief and blaming himself for his mother’s death, is now emotionally withdrawn and doesn’t listen to what Tim actually wants. When he thinks that his father is going out on Black Friday to get a new blade for his bandsaw, he is slightly frustrated, but not overly shocked. He is nine, and this disappointment is not new to him. Yet, when things kick off at the mall, he insists on Paul and Emma taking him to his dad so that the two of them can be reunited. That’s when Hatchetfield is nuked. Tim Houston dies alone, in his car (probably the same car his mother died in, or one bought soon after that happened) waiting for the arrival of a father who will never come to save him. That is the true tragedy of Black Friday, in my opinion. There is a whole song in Black Friday about Tom being willing to get whatever Tim wants, and another where he vows to make up for his failings towards him. But in ‘If I Fail You’, the entire basis of their dynamic is summed up in one line: “Where’s Tim?” Tim is forgotten, a mere afterthought once Wiggly threatens Hatchetfield… this poor, poor child…

I have so many conflicting feelings about Jane Perkins-Houston. She is a great mother. She is a manipulative bitch. She loves her sister. She thinks greenpeace girl is hot. Her best friend is Linda Monroe. She is a psychiatrist. She treats her husband like a patient instead of a lover. She took care of a literature professor that told her about the black book. Her family are probably hatchetmen. She likes bars. She is the perfect older sister. She is a car.

Paul is Richie's uncle headcannons are really cute, but consider alternatively:

Paul has no family living in Hatchetfield. He never had any siblings, and his parents retired in Florida or something, so he only sees them a couple times a year. He's always had a small family, and just kind of figured he always would.

Then he starts dating Emma, and things are going well, so she introduces her to Tom and Tim. He knows just how important re-connecting with her family is to Emma, so he tries really hard to make a good impression whenever they visit. Tom and Paul don't have much in common, and don't really hit it off at first, but Tim thinks he's great. This a surprise to Paul, since he doesn't really think he's good at talking to kids (and tbh he's kinda not), but despite that Tim really likes him. Maybe they bond over liking the same kinds of movies, maybe Tim just likes that he seems like a good listener, but the dynamic just clicks. Whenever Emma is coming over, Tim asks "is uncle Paul coming too?". Tim shows Paul a bunch of his favorite video games, and Paul is actually really good at helping Tim with his homework. Emma is stoked that Tim and Paul get along well and that she's becoming a closer part of the family, and Paul actually finds the whole "uncle" thing really fulfilling. This ends up being the catalyst to Emma and Paul having a more serious discussion about whether or not they want kids; maybe they do, maybe they don't, either makes sense to me, but either way Paul is really excited about becoming a closer part of the family
