Oplita Oneshot
This is based off of Transformers One. I've been itching to write something wholesome, and I absolutely adore Optimus and Elita as a couple. Normally, I put my writing on Wattpad. Then again, those are usually full-length stories. It just made sense to do this particular oneshot here. Perhaps I'll do more oneshots of my favorite fandoms in the future.
So, yeah, this is for my fellow die-hard Oplita fans.
Also... this takes place after the ending of Transformers One, maybe a few months or so after the ending. Sorry, I'm not sure what a month is in cybertronian terms; Google was unhelpful. If you have not seen Transformers One in its entirety, this one shot may not be as impactful as it could be.
-
Optimus ducked as he walked past the door frame, mumbling to himself. His eyes were glued to the data disks in his hands; he had grabbed far too many. A few dropped to the ground. He bent to pick them up, but only lost more in the process. Optimus shook his head and resorted to sitting on the ground, spreading out the data. Now he could read them better, though some of the works and markings were faded and illegible. He grunted, his legs getting in the way. Being taller and bulkier had its advantages in battle, but he couldn't exactly crawl through vents like he used to. Bee had joked that perhaps the Matrix of Leadership had a "switch" for shrinking, but Elita said that size didn't matter. Then, she promptly added, stupidity was sure to remain.
He was glad he didn't intimidate her, even after becoming a prime. Her suggestion to "adapt" to sudden change was both firm and helpful, though harsh. Now, it settled deep in his spark, and he began to overthink. What if he didn't adapt? Would she think less of him?
A memory flashed through his mind, eliminating his worries about Eilta. He may have been dying, but he remembered catching a glimpse of Elita leaning towards the edge of the well when he fell. It was both shocking and endearing, but he was glad Bee yanked her back. It warmed his heart before pain overtook it, pain so great that it rendered him unconscious. He hadn't mentioned it to her, and he didn't think he ever would. It would be a secret to hold on to, at least for the time being.
Optimus was so engrossed in his work he didn't hear the automatic doors open. When footfalls finally reached his ears, Optimus scrambled and gathered up the data disks to the best of his ability. Elita and a few of her soldiers in training turned the corner and walked down the hall. Elita put her hands on her hips.
"And here is our leader, on the ground and sorting through old data disks like a desperate scavenger. Don't worry; he's tougher than he looks."
"That's reassuring," said one of the trainees; a pink and white female cybertronian.
Optimus cleared his throat, gave a lop-sided grin, and backed up. He dumped the data disks on a table and apologized, though it was mostly for Elita's sake. When he returned to the group, Elita gave him an amused look, but waved a hand in front of the trainees.
"This is Arcee, Smoke, and Cliffjumper. It's part of their training to visit the archives. A tactical warrior is just as powerful as a physically strong one."
"Wheeljack was part of your training program, wasn't he?" Optimus asked.
Elita rolled her eyes, and Cliffjumper answered for her, holding back a laugh. "He got bored."
"He joked about starting his own group; a group that didn't mind going the extreme," Smoke said.
He paused, then added to his statement. "Maybe it wasn't a joke."
"It definitely wasn't a joke," Arcee said.
"I'll have a talk with him later," Elita said, and Optimus nodded.
He stared at the wall just above their heads, lost in thought. Elita straightened.
"You ok?" she asked.
"What?" Optimus snapped out of it. "Oh, I'm fine."
Elita turned to address her trainees. "Meal break. Get your energon and look over some of the data this place has to offer that you think will benefit you. I want you at the station in a couple of hours; no sooner, no later. Got it?"
They nodded and obeyed; heading down the hall and turning the corner. Silence fell as their chattering grew distant.
"I said I was fine," Optimus said, attempting a laugh.
It sounded hollow.
"What's wrong, Pax?"
Optimus' shoulders dropped in surrender. When she called him that, he always felt inclined to answer, as if he were a miner under her command again. "Pax" or "Orion" would only come from her, though, and she never used it in front of others. He was to be Optimus Prime to everyone else; a title that carried authority and a great deal of weight. All cybertronian citizens were aware that their life could never be the same; many were expected to train. Really, he wasn't the only one experiencing change.
"I don't know if I can do this," Optimus blurted, clenching his fists.
"You're going to have to be more specific," Elita said.
"I'm a prime, but I've never led. I'm expected to fight in a war that hasn't begun but haunts the future. I think we both know Megatron will be back; he will want to take my place. Maybe he should."
Elita sighed and took Optimus' hand. "Come on."
Dazed, Optimus nodded. They walked down the hall and through various rooms. Neither of them let go, fingers tightly intertwined.
"Find a place where we can talk, Pax. I haven't broken in here like you have."
"Commander's orders," Optimus said, picking up the pace.
They entered a dimly lit, musky room. Elita coughed, letting go of Optimus' hand to wave her hand in front of her face. "Couldn't you have picked a better place?"
"The worst places are often the best places," Optimus said.
"Is this vagueness going to be regular thing, now? I hate it."
Optimus braced his back against a shelving unit, though it didn't contain very many data disks. With a grunt he gave a few hard shoves, and the shelving unit moved to reveal a broken door that led to a precarious platform overlooking Iacon.
"Is this how you would get in?" Elita asked, coming closer to observe.
"No; there were more dangerous entry points with small ventilation systems. I got stuck for a full twenty minutes, once."
"And to think... if you had just stayed there, we could have avoided all this chaos."
"What... and have Cybertron miss this charm?" Optimus motioned to himself.
Elita rolled her eyes, but Optimus caught a small smile. He backed up, letting her go first, and Elita stepped onto the platform and approached the edge. She leaned forward, and Optimus sucked in an inward breath, squeezing past the door frame. She sat at the edge, legs dangling. As soon as Optimus sat beside her, she spoke.
"You won't know how to lead."
Great. Another one of her "encouraging" pep talks. Elita turned her head and waited until Optimus locked eyes with her.
"What I mean is... leading can never be mastered," Elita said. "So, you need to act like you have it all figured out. Voice your fears with the ones you trust, but don't put them on public display. You're right; Megatron is out there somewhere, plotting your demise."
"I don't like the thought of preparing citizens for war," Optimus said.
"It has to be done. The few already capable fighters we have don't stand a chance."
"I know."
"We have to win," Elita said.
Silence fell. They could both agree on that. Elita put a hand on his shoulder.
"You are nothing like Megatron."
"I... try to envision him as he was. He was my greatest friend, Elita. And yet, anyone is capable of betrayal."
"You may doubt yourself, but I would never betray you. Even when I seemed your enemy, yelled at you, and -"
"Punched me in the face?" Optimus offered.
"Yes, even then, I never hated you. You were just... too ambitious and eager for my taste."
"Interesting," Optimus said, looking upwards in thought.
Elita laughed and knocked him in the shoulder, and Optimus gasped dramatically and fell, rolling closer to the edge of the platform.
"I thought you would stop punching me," Optimus groaned, finally sitting up when Elita's eyes widened, no doubt worried he might fall, or perhaps having PTSD of when he had, in fact, fallen.
"Oh, come on! That wasn't a punch," Elita said.
Optimus laughed and stood up, offering a hand. Elita took it, and he helped her up.
"What were you doing rifling through the data disks, anyway?"
"I'm trying to find what remains of Alpha Trion's wisdom. The Matrix of Leadership offers many surprises, but I'm without a mentor. I wish he were here."
"You have everything and everyone you need," Elita said.
Optimus dipped his head, and Elita placed her hands on either side of his face, lifting it back up. "I expect you to be on the training grounds this afternoon. Maybe you can convince Wheeljack to join the group."
"Would they listen to me?"
"You have an axe for a hand. How could they not?"
Optimus laughed, and Elita lowered her hands, nodding in satisfaction.
"Thanks, Elita."
"Any time, Pax."

The WAVES of Change: Women's Valiant Service in World War II 🌊
Tumblr media
When the tides of World War II swelled, an unprecedented wave of women stepped forward to serve their country, becoming an integral part of the U.S. Navy through the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) program. This initiative not only marked a pivotal moment in military history but also set the stage for the transformation of women's roles in the armed forces and society at large. The WAVES program, initiated in 1942, was a beacon of change, showcasing the strength, skill, and patriotism of American women during a time of global turmoil.
Tumblr media
The inception of WAVES was a response to the urgent need for additional military personnel during World War II. With many American men deployed overseas, the United States faced a shortage of skilled workers to support naval operations on the home front. The WAVES program was spearheaded by figures such as Lieutenant Commander Mildred H. McAfee, the first woman commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy. Under her leadership, WAVES members were trained in various specialties, including communications, intelligence, supply, medicine, and logistics, proving that women could perform with as much competence and dedication as their male counterparts.
Tumblr media
The impact of the WAVES program extended far beyond the war effort. Throughout their service, WAVES members faced and overcame significant societal and institutional challenges. At the time, the idea of women serving in the military was met with skepticism and resistance; however, the exemplary service of the WAVES shattered stereotypes and demonstrated the invaluable contributions women could make in traditionally male-dominated fields. Their work during the war not only contributed significantly to the Allies' victory but also laid the groundwork for the integration of women into the regular armed forces.
Tumblr media
The legacy of the WAVES program is a testament to the courage and determination of the women who served. Their contributions went largely unrecognized for many years, but the program's impact on military and gender norms has been profound. The WAVES paved the way for future generations of women in the military, demonstrating that service and sacrifice know no gender. Today, women serve in all branches of the U.S. military, in roles ranging from combat positions to high-ranking officers, thanks in no small part to the trail blazed by the WAVES.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The WAVES program was more than just a wartime necessity; it was a watershed moment in the history of women's rights and military service. The women of WAVES not only supported the United States during a critical period but also propelled forward the conversation about gender equality in the armed forces and beyond. Their legacy is a reminder of the strength and resilience of women who rise to the challenge, breaking barriers and making waves in pursuit of a better world.

Companies in Brazil step up initiatives to foster diversity
Amid ongoing debates on sustaining diversity programs, organizations highlight their efforts and commitment
Tumblr media
While some companies are scaling back their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) efforts, others are intensifying their initiatives and reaffirming their commitment to the agenda.
Heineken, for instance, is taking significant steps to foster inclusion. In addition to its affinity groups, the company runs leadership programs and training designed to equip managers with the tools to create safer, more welcoming work environments. “Last year, the common module for all leadership training focused on psychological safety, which allows us to cultivate an inclusive atmosphere where people can be themselves and are valued for it,” explains Raquel Zagui, vice president of people in Brazil and global head of DE&I at Heineken Group.
Looking ahead to 2025, Heineken plans to launch the “Elas que Brilham” program, which aims to accelerate the careers of women in traditionally male-dominated fields. The 12-month program will train 15 women from various regions of Brazil who work in production, sales, and distribution to take on leadership roles. “Another important focus for 2025 is advancing the careers of Black professionals. To achieve this, we will invest in the ‘Potencies’ program, which is designed to strengthen soft skills and fast-track these professionals’ growth within our organization.”
Heineken has also revamped its recruitment and selection processes to eliminate unconscious biases, ensuring all candidates have equal opportunities. Currently, women hold 44% of leadership positions, with a goal to reach 50% by 2026. In terms of racial equity, 36% of leadership positions are occupied by Black employees, and the goal is to increase this to 40% by 2030. “To drive this transformation, we launched a national internship program for young Black people across Brazil last year. Today, 47% of our interns and 60% of our young apprentices are Black,” she adds. Additionally, the company continues to enhance the inclusion of people with disabilities, with 5.3% of employees currently identifying as such.

I know it’s not supposed to have much in-universe implication, but I love the possibility for connection between certain sets sharing particular pieces. The 2003 rebuilt Matoran design is supposedly the result of Matoran combining their own bodies with parts from Bohrok, and this is kinda seen in their arms using the Bohrok limb piece as well as additional sockets. The smaller technic pieces could’ve come from anywhere in the Bohrok’s main 2 body pieces, or even from a Bohrok-Va. What I find interesting, however, are their torsos. While introduced for these sets, they’re shared by the Vahki a year later, chronologically a millennium prior. We know the Vahki were designed by Nuparu, and I wouldn’t put it past him to have designed this new Matoran form either. Considering he’d forgotten designing the Vahki by the time he arrived on Mata Nui, I see this more as a storytelling component that pairs well with the later-revealed idea that Bohrok are transformed Av-Matoran. In essence, they are being returned to their origin. Sentient Matoran, mutated by fate into little more than tools, brought new life by enriching the lives of the population of Mata Nui.
I’m taking this another step further in my OC headcanon, as a partial connection between the Bohrok and Vahki. Being an Onu-Matoran, Nuparu likely took inspiration from various Rahi and creatures in the Archives, some of those in fact being inactive Bohrok. Studying them, I’m sure he could’ve discovered they serve as a mindless drone fleet controlled by a central leadership… just the thing Turaga Dume would’ve commissioned the Vahki for. Considering the life cycle of a Bohrok, however, I find it a compelling possibility that the reason the Vahki outnumber the Matoran of Metru Nui is because they were created using those Matoran. Just like Bohrok are transformed Av-Matoran, I like to imagine that, while Matoran are kept in the dark or told that Vahki are completely inorganic and artificially constructed, behind the scenes Turaga Dume is running some program in which well-performing Matoran are kidnapped, trained as Vahki cadets not being given the whole picture, then eventually contorted and morphed into mindless Vahki to fuel the growing army.
Each Metru’s Vahki model also has some inherent power, separate from their staves, that isn’t conveyed in their design. Many of these can correlate to Kanohi powers, like super speed and strength but also swimming potentially being tied to a Calix or Kaukau, or mind-reading being tied to a mask of Psychometry or something. Now, though, why do we not see these masks conveyed in the Vahki’s design?
Well… Norik and potentially others show us that Kanohi don’t have to have designs that match their powers, as the power comes from the disks used to forge them. Now, then, what mask shape would the Vahki cadets have worn, and then later merged into their being?
Perhaps the mask that was, out of universe, likely designed for Toa Nidhiki before the Toa Hagah had been conceptualized? Toa Nidhiki, who, when mutated gained the head of a Vahki? The Kualsi, the mask of Quick-Travel. A symbol of ever-presence, a mask whose bearer could appear at any moment as if imbued with the power of Botar himself. Perfect for an imposing law enforcer.
So then… what conclusion does all this bring me to? Vahki are the result of Matoran undergoing the same mutation as Nidhiki, wearing specialized masks all carved into Kualsi to impose an image of an ever-present law enforcement. (still headcanon but it’s metal af and i love it)

Who is.....Paige Guthrie | Husk? - A Reading Guide
Tumblr media
Paige Guthrie is an X-Men affiliated mutant from Marvel comics first introduced in 1984. Paige is the younger sister of Sam Guthrie (Cannonball of the New Mutants), and the oldest daughter of the Guthrie family. Paige is known for her passion and drive, as well as for her intellect. Husk has the mutant ability to shed her outer layer of skin and reveal a new state or shape underneath. Her power can cause random changes if she activates it without thinking, but by concentrating on specific chemical or elemental formulas, she can control the nature of her transformation. These shifts in state can leave her vulnerable to mood swings and blackouts, requiring her to be careful when she uses her powers. Despite her character being best known among fans for her relationships with Jono Starsmore (Chamber) and Warren Worthington III (Angel/Archangel) - Paige is a smart, strong, and kind character worthy of focus in her own right. (She's also amazing Appalachian representation in comics <3).
Below you can find a mostly complete record of Paige's appearances through February 2023 complete with totally legal links ;)! I've included context for crossover events and major storylines in the hopes of making this reading list as accessible to new readers as possible!
Beginnings
First Appearances: within these two issues, we get our first introduction to Paige, and the family dynamic she exists in. (While Paige is only present in passing in New Mutants #42, that issue offers an in depth look into the Guthrie family dynamics of the oldest siblings, even if Paige is noticeably absent from this conversation.)
Rom Annual (1979) #3 New Mutants (1983) #42
Child's Play (and its aftermath): In this crossover event, the Upstarts continue their series of games to prove their power and worth to one another. This time, they devise "the Younghunt", a mission to capture all of the surviving members of the New Mutants (some of whom are now members of X-Force) and the Hellions. Paige had secretly followed X-Force, and ends up saving the day with her intellect. The event ends with New Warriors #46, and Paige's appearances afterwards tackle the aftermath of the event, with Cable trying to talk to Paige about her future and her training.
X-Force (1991) #32-33 New Warriors (1990) #46 X-Force (1991) #34-36
Phalanx Covenant: Mutant hating humans that have gained access to Warlock's techno-organic Phalanx virus use it to turn themselves into techno-organic beings. With these powers, the Phalanx are able to change their shape and assimilate organic matter. As a hive-mind they are programmed to exterminate all mutant life. This event sets up Generation X (which is Paige heavy!). The first three issues listed below are the only ones technically part of the Phalanx Covenant event, but some more issues have been included to add a bit more context before the Generation X section :)
X-Men (1991) #36 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #317 X-Men (1991) #37 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #318 X-Force (1991) #42
Training with the X-Men
Generation X: A new team of mutants under the leadership of Sean Cassidy (Banshee) and Emma Frost (The White Queen) is formed at the Massachusetts campus of the Xavier Institute. The goal of this team is to earn an education and learn how to become the next generation of X-Men- their focus is not to fight villains. Paige is featured heavily in this book and is one of the main team members!
Generation X (1994) #1-9, Annual #1, 10-21, Annual #2, 22-23, Annual #3, 24-40, 1/2, 41 X-Men Unlimited (1993) #20 Generation X (1994) 42-49, Annual #4 Generation X Holiday Special Generation X (1994) #50 X-Man(1995) #50 Generation X (1994) #51 X-Force (1991) #87 Generation X (1994) #52-56 Wolverine (1988) #141 Generation X (1994) #57-58, Annual #5, 59-75
Post-Graduation
Uncanny X-Men: Generation X ends with #75 and from there Paige's next appearances are found within the pages of Uncanny X-Men. In this arc, we see Paige recruited by Sean Cassidy (Banshee) onto the paramilitary team, X-Corps (this plotline is certainly a choice made by Marvel comics). While X-Corps was not a long lived team, and the arc mostly happens in Uncanny X-Men #403-406, the rest of the Uncanny X-Men and related/chronological plotlines are listed here as well - this leads directly into M-Day.
Uncanny X-Men (1981) #403-426 Exiles (2001) #28-30 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #427-441 Weapon X (2002) #15, 18
House of M/M-Day: After altering reality so mutants were the dominant race, the Scarlet Witch then changed reality again, this time attempting to rid the world of the mutant gene, by casting another spell, "No More Mutants", de-powering the vast majority of mutants.
Excalibur (2004) #11-13 X-Men (1991) #165 Decimation: House of M - The Day After
Sentinels: The Sentinels were artificially intelligent robots designed to hunt mutantkind. Although a prototype was developed in San Francisco in 1906, the modern Sentinels were first created by Dr. Bolivar Trask. His intention was to use them to save humanity from what he saw as an impending threat to the species' existence due to the increasing numbers of emerging mutants. Sentinels have long been one of the largest threats to mutantkind in X-comics and at this point in comics are one of the greatest threats to them from the government. Especially when so many mutants have been depowered as the result of M-Day/Decimation. This section also touches on Divided We Stand, a synopsis is linked here for ease of understanding.
Uncanny X-Men (1981) #469-472 New X-Men (2004) #24-32 X-Men: Divided We Stand (2008) #1
Secret Invasion: TW: THIS EVENT IS TIED PRETTY HEAVILY INTO ANTISEMITIC TROPES PROCEED WITH CAUTION The premise of Secret Invasion is that the Skrull empire, in a bid to take control of earth, replaces several super-powered humans/humanoids on earth with Skrulls.
Secret Invasion X-Men (2008) #2-4
Utopia: Within the Utopia event (connected to the Utopia base that used to be Asteroid M), Scott Summers (Cyclops) instructs Logan Howlett (Wolverine) to create a new secret X-Force team to act as something like a black-ops squad. Meanwhile, Norman Osborne (of Spider-Man, Green Goblin fame) had promised Emma Frost (White Queen) that he would spare the mutant society in San Francisco if she kept them in line. This event is heralded by secret-keeping with a backdrop of anti-mutant legislation being passed in many US states due to Simon Trask's (Bolivar Trask's, creator of the Sentinels, brother) push for a lack of reproductive freedom for mutants.
Dark Avengers (2009) #8 Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Exodus (2009)
Necrosha and Second Coming: Necrosha is a crossover event that deals with mutants being resurrected for the dark purposes of Selene Gallio (an old enemy of the X-Men, first appearing in New Mutants (1983) #9) who intends to use these resurrected mutants in her quest to become a goddess. Second Coming is a storyline that builds on the Utopia and Necrosha storylines. The story centers on the return of Cable and Hope Summers, and on attempts to end the X-Men through the destruction of the Mutant Messiah, the aptly named Hope Summers.
X-Force (2008) #22 X-Men: Legacy (2008) #231-233 New Mutants (2009) #14 X-Men: Legacy (2008) #237
Curse of the Mutants: In what can only be described as the "oh shit we've run out of ideas" last resort of any creative company putting out too many crossover events in a short period of time..... the X-Office put out Curse of the Mutants. The arc centers on a human bomb exploding in San Francisco's Union Square, covering dozens in vampire-converting blood. It then becomes the mission of the X-Men to track down Dracula's son Xarus, now "Lord of the Vampires", even if that means enlisting vampire-hunter Blade. Yeah.... I don't know either.
X-Men: Curse of the Mutants - X-Men vs. Vampires X-Men (2010) #5
Age of X: The mutants are almost extinct, tortured by a strike force led by Colonel Graydon Creed. The first signs of the Age of X appeared in X-Men: Legacy #244; the events were removed from the Earth-616 mainstream continuity, with no memories of the alternate lives. If you've taken a look at my David Haller Reading List you'll see this event explained as "David’s desire to be loved forces him to grapple with reality," and as a story that "places David in a role where he has to choose between a false universe where he is considered a beloved hero and reality where he must choose to be a hero despite the fear others feel about him." And while that is the base cause of the event, Age of X also has some absolutely INCREDIBLE moments for Paige (and her relationship with her brother Sam) to shine!
X-Men: Legacy (2008) #246 New Mutants (2009) #23 X-Men: Legacy (2008) #247 New Mutants (2009) #24-27
Regenesis: In the aftermath of Schism, the X-Men re-organize and face new challenges. Imo you don't necessarily have to read Schism to understand Regenesis, but it might be helpful if you want to grasp all the nuance.
X-Men: Regenesis (2011) #1 Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) #1-3 X-Men: Legacy (2008) #260.1 Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) #4-7 X-Men: Legacy (2008) #261-265 Astonishing X-Men (2004) #51
Avengers vs. X-Men: When the Phoenix Force approaches Earth, Hope Summers is assumed its next host. The X-Men and the Avengers are divided on how to handle the situation. The X-Men believe that the Phoenix Force will herald the rebirth of the Mutant Species, while the Avengers believe that it will bring an end to all life on Earth. This leads to a war between Marvel's two powerful superhero factions.
Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) #9 Avengers vs. X-Men (2012) #3 Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) #10 X-Men: Legacy (2008) #266-267 Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) #13-19, 30-41
What comes next?
While many of Paige's appearances take place in or connected to crossover events, there is a blissful period in the 2010s where this is not the case and the stakes aren't quite as high. The events pick up again in 2019 with Age of X-Man, but the following issues take place between Wolverine and the X-Men and the Age of X-Man event.
Nightcrawler (2014) #3-4 Uncanny X-Men (2013) #600 Generation X (2017) #8-9 Spider-Man/Deadpool (2016) #24-25 Generation X (2017) #85-87 Spider-Man/Deadpool (2016) #27-40
Age of X-Man: The name and premise derive from the 1995 storyline Age of Apocalypse, but instead focus on a utopian alternate universe led by the X-Man, Nate Grey. This is.... not the comic to read for Nate, but Paige is here!
Uncanny X-Men (2019) #1-10 (Paige is technically only in #9-10, but all ten issues are highly recommended as they're the lead-up to Age of X-Man!) Age of X-Man: Next Gen (2019) #1-2
House of X and Krakoa: House of X is the event that sets up the founding of the island nation of Krakoa as a safe haven for mutants. These comics also detail the Crucible, a way for de-powered mutants to die in combat and be resurrected with their powers once more.
House of X (2019) #3-5 X-Men (2019) #7 Fallen Angels (2019) #5-6 X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic (2021) #1, 3-4, 22, 24-25, 41 Legion of X (2022) #8
If you have any questions about Paige, or have a specific request on which of her siblings (Sam, Jay, Mel) I should do a reading list for next just let me know! My asks and DMs are open!

Day 8: Our Volunteer Application
How do we invite people into something sacred and make sure they’re truly ready to hold it with care?
This was the question we asked ourselves while developing the new volunteer application process for the Embodied Futures Collective (EFC). After years of doing things differently through Better Future Program (BFP), we knew this next chapter needed to feel more intentional, more relational, and more aligned.
In BFP, almost everyone who applied was accepted. There was no interview. No cohort. Just an open door and a lot of trust. And while that openness made space for some incredible people, it also welcomed others who didn’t truly resonate with our values. While there was an onboarding process in BFP—with pre-recorded trainings and systems in place for volunteers to complete asynchronously—it often meant that people could move through it in isolation, without opportunities for deeper connection. Without communal entry points, volunteers were dropped straight into the work. Burnout was common, connection decreased over time, and cohesion suffered.
So for EFC, we chose a slower, more thoughtful path.
We began by revisiting the original BFP application. Many of the questions still held value, but we knew we wanted more than just reflections on identity or political theory. We wanted to understand people’s intentions. Why are they coming here? How do they hope to show up? What does this space mean to them?
This focus on intention is not arbitrary. One thing that has remained true in every iteration of our work is our unwavering commitment to uplifting the leadership of those most vulnerable. Most of our youth, if not all, are multiply marginalized. Black, disabled, trans, chronically ill, caste-oppressed, neurodivergent. This is not a space for theory alone; it is a space that holds real people with real histories of being harmed. And so, when someone steps into EFC, they are stepping into a space already shaped by survival and care. We must be careful. We must be discerning. Because anything less risks retraumatizing the very people this space was built to protect.
As Baaba (she/her) noted, “Intentions within the collective space are important, especially for those who are not marginalized.”
Rojan (she/they) agreed, suggesting we include a question about why someone is applying to EFC in the first place, an entry point into deeper discernment. Persie (they/it/any) built upon that, asking what applicants think EFC actually is, reflecting on past confusion from folks who misunderstood our purpose altogether.
And Caspian (he/him) reminded us that vulnerability should be welcomed. Rather than pressuring people to have all the “right” answers, we want to invite transparency. As he shared, “I’d prefer that someone say they haven’t heard of or practiced transformative justice, than feel like they need to be an expert... That’s just another chance to offer them a resource.”
These conversations helped shape our updated EFC written application, which asks about alignment with our collective values, clarity of intention, skills and gifts, and what someone hopes to both offer and learn. We also made sure that every question could be answered in writing or through a video submission, honoring different communication needs.
But we didn’t stop there. We added a new stage: the interview.
As AMW (any pronouns) said, the written application is just a “taste test”—a first impression. The interview is where we meet the full person: their voice, their tone, their presence, their questions. It’s a deeper, more conversational space to explore alignment, clarify unclear answers, and begin building a relationship.
The goal of the interview is not perfection. It’s presence. We want to know who you are, not just what you’ve read. How you listen. How you reflect. How you dream.
Finally, we’ve structured the overall process to unfold in four steps:
Written or Video Application – A snapshot of your values, intentions, and interests
Live Interview – Text or video format, your choice; a deeper exploration of who you are
Onboarding Cohort – A multi-month orientation into the collective, built around relationship and learning (more to come soon!)
Final Cohort Gathering – A welcoming session to transition from cohort member to fully fledged volunteer, with space to reflect and celebrate
This new process is slower by design, as we’re not just building a volunteer program. We’re building a Collective. A home. A place to dream, to contribute, and to heal.
And it all begins with a single question: Why do you want to be here?
