Drew this after 3 Below came out. I know it's considered the weakest series out of the Tales of Arcadia but it's still a good show in its own right - Aja and Krel are adorable, the humor was just as funny as in Trollhunters, and personally I found it a lot tighter written than Wizards. Also like, c'mon, it had Varvatos Vex!

Inspired by other fics:

The Adventures of Gonky the Cat - Slight spoiler, Gonky is a cat in the modern AU fic Roasted, Brewed, & Served with Attitude (see description below), and I decided to write his backstory/fill in some of his adventures. This is a WIP, currently there are no spoilers in it, but eventually there will be some chapters that give spoilers for later in the story (and will be noted as such).

Gemini Eyes - This one shot fits in as a chapter in between chapters 85 and 87 of Roasted, Brewed, & Served with Attitude (see description below). DO NOT read it unless you have made it that far in Mel's work, otherwise you will have pretty significant spoilers. I had a lot of fun working with Mel's versions of each character, and it's always a joy to write Tech's thought processes and mannerisms.

Roasted, Brewed, & Served with Attitude - by MelMorganne99 over on AO3. It's a clever, emotional, modern AU with Crosshair x OC (and one of the best OC characters I've ever read). This fic helped me understand and appreciate the nuances of Crosshair's personality and emotional journey, and has given me endless writing inspiration. And the author is one of the kindest, most engaging people I've ever met online. Please, please, please do yourself a favor and read it. There are 99 chapters but they're on the short side and full of snarky humor and sometimes surprising cameos. This is a full blown fix it fic too, although not always in the ways you might expect!

The Vacation - by @staycalmandhugaclone is one of the best Crosshair fics (and smut fics in general) I've ever read. The writing style haunts me and both Crosshair and the OC are beautifully characterized.

Hot takes, hmmm...

For the show itself: Hands of Time is a season I only consider to be shitty PURELY because of the writing, and as much as the fandom at large rags on the Hageman Brothers, they could ABSOLUTELY have saved it and made it a masterpiece. The base concepts, the general aesthetic, the way it was meant to wrap up the multi-season Kai and Nya parentage arc - phenomenal. Delicious. I can even sort of excuse the godawful animation simply because the Kai slide makes me laugh until I start choking. But the substitute writing team WAS NOT THE MOVE. I know Dan and Kevin were off doing Trollhunters or whatever, but I would have rather had a multi-year wait for them to return and do HoT than have gotten HoT as we did.

For the fandom: Not naming names because I don't have any specific names TO name (this is 13 years of general observation speaking here), but some fans are weirdly hypocritical about the necessity of shipping. Like, there have been MULTIPLE instances where someone unleashes a stream of "we should appreciate XYZ on their own" and/or "the writers need to stop shoehorning in romance the moment a new woman gets added to the cast" (which I fully agree with) but then the next thing I see from them is five gallons of XYZ viewed EXCLUSIVELY through a shipping lens. For some reason I feel like I see it a LOT amongst Lava enjoyers, but don't get me wrong - it happens EVERYWHERE. No character is safe! This kind of thing even happens with non-shipping issues sometimes (my favorite: when someone complains that there's not enough Nya rep in Skybound fanwork overall but it's sandwiched between twenty posts gushing over Jay Abuse Power Hour fic chapter 64 and ten moody drawings of Nya deader than the woman in the "Helena" MV. Exaggerated slightly for effect there, but like - you can do something about that, you know!) Maybe it's just post order being REALLY mean to me, I dunno. It's always a bit jarring to see, though.

some douxie angst after wizards, spoilers for those new to trollhunters.

Staring at the stone at the end of his staff, hiserdoux replayed his memories on loop. His eyes glanced from the bracelet of spells he'd previously relied on to the staff he had earned now tightly clutched in his hand.

It had been about a month now, since he watched his teacher, Merlin, along with Morgana and king Arthur finally walk into the light on the other side. A month since he'd lost the one man he looked up to for so long almost like a father figure he never had.

Merlin was gone, the mantle had past down to him with his new staff. Hiserdoux was now the master wizard...but it didn't feel right. It felt empty.

He never imagined finally receiving his staff this way, never thought Merlin would die when he finally succeeded him. He thought it would be one grand final test, inventing a new spell or something incredible to finally earn the staff he kept getting denied. 

But here he was now, hiding out in new York with a spirit of earth and his familiar, having had his staff for only a month and feeling doubts about having truly earned it.

Merlin...wasnt wrong, he finally was ready, he had improved so much since the start and was really a master of magic now, a true wizard, but it still didn't feel right to have his staff sometimes.

Merlin never should have had to die, to pass on the mantle to him, in order for him to get this. Not like this. 

But the past is the past...and he's been down that road of changing it before, he doesn't want to mess with time again.

"Douxie?" A voice snapped him out of his thoughts and he jumped a bit when he felt a paw on his leg. "Hiserdoux, are you alright?" Archie asked, settling down beside him on the apartment couch.

"Oh, yeah, yeah, I'm...fine" he sighed "no Archie I'm not. This doesn't feel right" he let go of the staff which disappeared in a light puff of blue smoke and leaned forward with his elbows on his knees.

"Well I don't exactly like being in this big city either...but I get the feeling you mean something else" Archie tilted his head as if to encourage douxie to speak more.

"It's Merlin's absence. I've waited hundreds of years to finally get my staff, now I have it, but the greatest wizard of all time is...gone...it doesn't feel real, arch." 

"It's only been a month, hiserdoux, it takes time for these things to set it..." Archie nuzzled his way into douxies lap and curled up with a soothing purr.

"Thanks, arch" he gave the cat-dragon a few scratches behind the ear and leaned back against the couch again.

Merlin was gone, he has a staff, he was the master wizard now. But what came next? What now?

Oh! Hello! I was tagged by @pinkytoothlesso11 ! Thanks for thinking of me pinky! I’m kinda new to the whole fanfic scene so i really appreciate it! This was already a long list of questions to begin with but i fear i may have made it worse…

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

Unfortunately just 2, though I do plan to add a few more in the future as ideas flow. Might take me a minute ‘cause my schedule is just a little bit kinda sorta really swamped down with my main child which requires let me you, A LOT OF CARE DONT SIGN UP TO ADOPT KIDS PEOPLE IT’S NOT—

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

Phew. ummmm it changes very rapidly (because i’m a girl w suspected adhd and can NEVER be told to shut up) with every chapter but as of this moment is 228,665! wow! i don’t really know how great of a number that is but i’m sure it’s a lot! I told you I can never shut up! (-whispers- Hey kid, u want some dRuGs? i mean- an update? That itty bitty word count is about to take another not regularly scheduled mini-skyrocket so get ready for it ehehe ;})

3. What fandoms do you write for?

For now, just Trollhunters/Tales of Arcadia, mainly Trollhunters despite the fact that the first of the Tales of Arcadia shows that i watched and really enjoyed was actually 3-Below, but oh well my man is in Trollhunters sooooo oopsie but i DO have some random snippets of fics for Miraculous (rewrite), the Star Wars sequels (rewrite), Batman, some for the Dream SMP, and weirdly enough also Raya and the Last Dragon (rewrite). All of which i prolly wont ever post because i wrote them a while ago and yeaaaahhh not my best writing but if i get enough people other than my best friend wanting me to post them, i might…

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

uhhhh i dont actually HAVE five fics to my name, so i’ll just…put em in order (w their long-ahh title names):

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes. At first, I sorta struggled with it (who the heck am i kidding i STILL do) but since my fic USED to be two times a week updates i would feel like i couldn’t respond to a comment left after i posted a new chapter so i might’ve left some comments in the earlier days unanswered, super sorry. Nowadays i make it a point to reply back to everyone in the order that they commented in because (anxiety makes me think if i don’t respond they won’t comment anymore and know that i love reading their comments and that they’re so amazing for actually taking the time to write something back AND I DO LOVE IT I PROMISE IT JUST TAKES ME A WHILE TO RESPOND—) …because it’s pretty chill to geek out w em and see they liked stuff that i loved to write! I do have a backlog of comments to get to i just end up overthinking everything to match the person’s energy to be sure they know i love em.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Unfortunately, i haven’t actually finished a fully-fledged fic to say it has the angstiest ending bUt definitely a contender would be chapter 1 of my 2023 Stricklake prompt collection because i just leave it on the sad note and don’t do anything about it because angst and because spoilers for my actual story fic that will eventually make it to that point.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Happiest ending, huh? I like to say that most of the things i will/have chosen to write end happy/hopeful because i hate when books/tv shows end bittersweetly it’s like i have enough with life itself being bittersweet most of the time let me be happy LET THEM BE HAPPY. But that doesn’t exclude me from providing the proper banquet of angst that ends in caretaking, my absolute favorite trope.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Oh heck no. I would be devastated honestly, but thankfully everyone who comments is always the sweetest and kindest people ever and really encourage me to keep going, for that i am only thankful.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

No. Just no. I love romance but i am a minor, so i’ve never consumed smut nor intend to ever write it. Give me a soft romance and loving gestures, I can allude to greater happenings but not details.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I don’t, sorry. I don’t know something in me just doesn’t sit well with crossovers, for the life of me I don’t know why. Like genuinely i wish i could get into them but maybe it’s like food on a plate? i don’t like the foods touching each other so maybe the same rules apply??? yeah i’m drasticallydumb

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that i know of, no.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I don’t believe so, and if someone did they’re in for a heck of a lot of work there…

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nope! I’d like to sometime but i have no idea how one even goes about making a co-written fic, on top of which i am a very sporadic person in terms of motivation and random ideas produced by a song i’m listening to while writing.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Stricklake obviously is a really big contender if not the winner, the ship that brought me to AO3, writing fanfics, and tumblr. But, if i had to pick other options i’d say Eugene and Repunzel from Tangled would be one of my ogs, another might be uhhh Chris and Aviva from Wild Kratts the og of the ogs.

15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Chapter 3 of my stricklake 2023 prompt collection, it just has a lot of moving parts and me and my best friend are chronic procrastinators and with the month pretty far gone it might just end up sittin’ there for the foreseeable future 😞 but who knows

16. What are your writing strengths?

Phew, that’s a dozy mainly because i’m not super sure. I’d like to think one of my main strengths is descriptions and really putting you in the mind of the character, i don’t really like spelling things out and i like a little investigating to get you where u end up, u know? I like to think my writing FEELS a little more like a show on a page rather than a true book, most to blame would be my maladaptive daydreaming taking up a lot of time in my planning for my writing.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Ah. How the turn tables. I would say that my weaknesses in writing mostly consist of me going a little *too* far into detail on meaningless things or making it too convoluted for people to understand, sometimes spelling it out is better in certain scenarios and i just really need to get myself past that. Another one i would say is that i go REALLY into detail not only in a sentence/chapter sense but also a complete STORYLINE sense, i hate time skips and i shoot myself in the foot wanting to completely document every moment of everyday w a character and hence it seems like a lot of time in universe hasn’t gone by. Trying to improve and grow tho 💪

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Can’t wait to do more of it! Especially with Claire and her family (including NotEnrique) speaking spanglish w each other automatically mainly because i am hispanic and completely fluent in Spanish and live in a similar household so i just love to add a little ✨personalization✨ to my dialogue and interactions in that way. Other languages………….yeaaaahhh i’m not super good will prolly use google translate and hope.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Trollhunters, my gateway into AO3. HOWEVER. if you promise not to tell, the very first fandom i read/wanted to write a fanfic for was actually, as far as i can tell, Wordgirl. don’t ask why. don’t ask me how. it just kinda happened. But, officially, it’s Trollhunters. (maybe with a side of Warrior Cats).

20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?

Not hard at all! My pride and joy, my youngest baby in the grand scheme of my writing journey, Trollhunter!Strickler: Destiny's Ill-fitted Chosen! A surprise to absolutely NO ONE. It’s honestly so amazing to both write and see people read and enjoy as much as I do, he’s my little man ❤️ And doing so much rewriting and character growth and having so much written and planned for the future, it’s just my absolute fav

Today is my 18th birthday and I'm going to post some sappy and "cliche" shit here because I'm legal now and because I can.

If you told me five or six years ago I'd live to 18, I wouldn't believe you. I've always had a hard time imagining myself in the future, and there were genuinely times when I thought I wouldn't make it to adulthood, that my story would end short. But I'm here. I'm still alive. Very tired, but very alive.

But there are a few things that stay constant throughout your life, things you can almost always be certain of. For me, that's always been writing, art, music, and TOA.

I've mentioned it before, but I started watching Tales of Arcadia when Trollhunters first released. I saw an ad for it on YouTube, thought 'ooo pretty animation', and watched it. I was not of age to be on social media, so I never really joined the fandom or kept up to date on news about the series until 2021 when I realized "Oh shit I've never searched up the 'trollhunters' tag on Tumblr even though I've been on this hellsite since 2019 whoops". I didn't really get merch, books, or toys (because the thought those might exist never crossed my mind either).

But despite that, I loved the show and the story it told with my whole being.

And since then, I've kept up with each season and each new series. This series was there with me during the most awful years of my youth, and these characters mean the world to me. To me, part of the charm of TOA was brilliant blending of the mundane with the magical and extraterrestrial. I can't quite articulate it at the moment, but there's something about that and finding hope, strength, and light in the darkest of places that makes me feel so at peace.

The fandom isn't as roaring loud as it used to be (and the discourse is hnn), but I managed to make a few friends here. I've also had not-so-great experiences and found myself on the less-than-pleasant side of the fence, but I'm working on learning and growing and becoming a better person, and I'm making new friends too.

TOA is going to continue holding a special place in my heart, and I look forward to keeping a part of it with me into my adulthood. Obviously the important things, like Jim's cooking skills, Claire's intelligence, Toby's knowledge of geology, Aja's shredded bod, Krel's immaculate music taste, and, of course, Douxie's gender. But in all seriousness, I'm carrying the lessons I've learned from the show and being in the fandom along with me into adulthood.

Now, Netflix, can you please greenlight some TOA shorts? Please, please, please? Would really appreciate it.

Okay, my friend, I am serious. I love your art, I love your talent and skill and dedication, and honestly, I just really love YOUR love for Trollhunters. I’m barely in the fandom (a crime, I know), but trust me, you are an absolutely amazing part of this fandom, and you make my day. I know last year hit you so hard like it did me, and if you are like me I know you’re still healing, so please, please take care of yourself too. Long story short of why I’m sending this: you deserve some positivity and appreciation!

I can't even begin to describe how much this means to me. So I will just simply say thank you. Thank you for always reposting my art, thank you for the love you give it in your tags, thank you for the support you've given, and thank you soooo so much for this note. I'm gonna be honest, I cried... lol 🥹😭

I pulled myself out of a years long art hiatus and started sketching Jim as a kind of post RotT therapy, and it's quickly ramped up into a full blown passion that I hope never dies. It's not always easy, but people like you make it worth it!

okay no more shame cringe culture is dead and I’m killing it. I made a trollhunters oc because I love the trolls/changlings and needed to make a purple one, that’s him, the purple one...his name is Clement Mortar and he broke away from the janice order as well as the trolls in heartstone, he lives with his twin brother Charles Mortar (human familiar/brother) by the ocean where he enjoys boating and sailboarding. lore stuff under the cut

when he was younger he was used as a mole in the janice order by the trolls but after becoming frustrated by all the mistrust and judgment he set out to prove that he was sincere by saving his familiar and setting him free, however that set off the opposite reaction from the trolls and after he lashed out a second time he was banished from heartstone. after a long time of hiding in the sewers and shadows he came across his familiar/brother, now grown up and settled down in a house by the sea.

He spends the rest of his time hiding from both the magical world he was banished from and the mundane world as to not expose himself to humans, his brother Charles (bless his soul) begrudgingly deals with the added stress of watching out for magical threats and hiding his big purple brother, which he doesn’t hesitate to poke Clement with it anytime that’s most convenient. Charles is less then enthusiastic about needing to watch out for changelings and trolls but loves and appreciates his weird brother all the same, I might make a post for him if need be

With the amount of responses we have gotten, we're slowly becoming more picky with applications. While we want every artist and writer to have a chance at joining our Zine. We just want to make sure we're able to control the amount of people contributing as our team on this Zine isn't very big.

So i uh- rewatched the Trollhunters TV show and I... may or may not have created a new oc.

I might make an official bio post on her later when I have more. But for now:

Her name is Astrea (the name is important, it will come in later)

she's Merlin's 1st/oldest apprentice, and is about to have a burntout gifted kid/golden child burnout arc

she has a bit of a rivalry with Douxie (cuz she's pressured to be perfect and he feels like he's always in her shadow and is just the backup or second pick). they do have an arc about it and learn and grow to appreciate and love each other (platonically of course)

she specializes in magic with light (sunlight, starlight, led light, etc)

her wizard staff turns into a pen to make it easy to hide in the modern world

she also uses a lot of rune magic

she has a very bubbly personality

also very smart and an alchemy/magic science nerd, her magical bag is full of spellbooks

she also takes notes in her spellbooks with glitter pens

she has frizzy red hair

I realized she's also pretty heavily adhd/autistic coded (i'm not mad, i have adhd and autism myself)

She's also Aspec (on the aro and ace spectrums)

probably will have a familiar like Douxie i just... haven't figured out that part yet

she first appears in Season 3 when they're trying to rescue Jim from the darklands and Kanjikar tells them in order to succeed they will need the assistance of "Merlin's firey haired apprentice" and they find her hiding out in a small Arcadia bookshop and ask her for help < being the sweet, helpful, and bubbly person Astrea is, she happily agrees to help them, and joins the gang on their adventures since

Also Merlin hasn't told her yet, but he's been lying about her origins and where she came from (i won't go into details yet, but long story short- he actually created her with magic from the help of dragons, and he specifically created and designed her to be a weapon that could defeat Morgana).

^When she finds out the truth, she's pretty pissed with Merlin and very hurt and has complicated feelings about the person who raised her and praised her but also put so much pressure on her and lied to her for thousands of years

She also becomes pretty fast friends with Jim, Claire, and Toby, they're all great friends to her

She is sweet and bubbly but if you hurt her friends ITS ON SIGHT (Gunmar and his goons learned that lesson the hard way when Merlin wasn't present to reign her in)

Protection charms and potions are also a specialty of hers
