Destiel Fic Recs

Let's all pretend that I didn't just do one of these because I have clearly been consuming fic at an alarming rate.

A Beginner's Guide to Communing with the Dead by suspiciousflashlight @huntingthehaggis (Mature, 77k,)

Listen. I am actually mad at all y'all cause this fic has existed since 2013 and nobody told me to read it until now.

Detective Dean Winchester is haunted (literally) by the murder of a little girl. Unable to move on, he makes the decision to summon an ancient creature, Castiel, using forbidden magic. But the murder is only the beginning and he and Cas find themselves in a race against time to fight an ancient evil.

This fic has everything. Immaculate worldbuilding. Trueform Cas. Impeccable humor. Seriously, I devoured it. I'm shocked it took me this long to find it (probably because it's older), but I'm so happy I did.

The Beginning by valleydean (emmbrancsxx0) @valleydean (Explicit, 129k)

A horrorfest Endverse fic, Mallory tackles what happened between the Croatoan infection and Dean and Cas' arrival in Camp Chitaqua. It's canon compliant and it really digs into Dean losing hope and becoming the darker version of himself and Cas falling into addiction and losing his angelic powers. 

It's angsty and brutal and gross in the way zombie stories are. It's also got shining moments of love in the face of hopeless odds. Plus there's a character named River so you know it's good.

I also think watching the degradation of these two characters, and the way their love can't be denied even then is just really a good read. 

Above & Below by murron (Explicit, 45k)

Speaking of older fics to lose your fucking mind over, this fic is absolutely immaculately done. Steeped in canon and set in S6, Dean, Cas and Soulless Sam embark on a journey through the circles of hell. Their mission is to recover Sam’s soul and their brother Adam from the cage.

It's really beautifully constructed with the vision of Hell pulled from various pieces of lore. This is a horror story for sure, but it's not a hopeless one. It's more like an epic mythological journey. And at its heart is the love story of Dean and Cas, and a lot of healing for Dean and Sam.

It's high concept. It's poetic. It's a top tier story to meltdown over.

Sentinel by Followsthebees (Explicit, 15k) @follows-the-bees

A delightful entry from the monsterfluffer bang, Dean finds himself increasingly enamored with a gargoyle on the roof of his work. What he doesn't know is the gargoyle feels the same way.

This has some absolutely delicious smut. 10/10 magical creature porn. But also Dean is so cute and lonely and full of love and Cas us such a delightful little creature. A fantastic time was had by all (me). Canon is integrated in a really fun way in a few places and the humor is fantastic.

Just a complete romp.

A pun regarding the word "bull" by zation @zationao3 (Explicit, series 41k)

Smutty and fluffy and oh so horny, this fic is a fun AU with light angst, a lot of sexual tension, but ultimately it's just a fun ride with a happy ending.

Castiel doesn't have time for attachments, but his money does afford him all the comforts of wealth and a string of casual lovers. When he spots Dean on the back of a mechanical bull, he decides he's found his next conquest - and a very willing one at that.

But after that night, both men can think of nothing but a repeat performance. Unfortunately, they failed to exchange numbers. Even more unfortunately, Dean just happens to be the new contactor engaged by Cas' company and therefore off limits. 

There is some delicious smut in this one. The angst is counteracted with a sweet, soft pining and a profound bond type immediate connection that is a delight to read. 

You Better Not Stay by FriendofCarlotta @friendofcarlotta (Explicit, 17k) 

A fantastic horrorfest thriller, this one delivers jump scares and teen scream delight.

Dean and Cas have been best friends just short of forever and lovers for a year. But now that high school is behind them, Cas wants to leave to find freedom from his fucked up family. Dean can’t bring himself to join him. There’s Sam and the family business.

On the cusp of separation, Dean decides to take Cas on a little date to the abandoned skating rink they used to love when they were kids. Only they aren't alone, and if they're not careful, their last night together could be their last night on earth.

This one is great for the jumps and screams. But it's the soft way they love each other and the vulnerability that make this one memorable. Dean is heartbreakingly earnest trying to impress the man he loves. And Cas is sarcastic and sweet in a perfect balance.

And you're the sky by Desirae (Explicit, 28k)

Quite by accident I have two fics on here following the missed connection/one night stand reappears in your life trope, but they are very different. This one has a lot more roommates to lovers domesticity and some delightful Wings (the show) vibes.

Dean’s best friend, Gabriel, has been grounded due to medical issues. In order to save his small airline, he calls upon his estranged brother, Castiel for assistance. Being a good friend, Dean happily offers up a room in his house to Cas. Only when he shows up, he happens to be the one who got away - a hookup who was going by the name Jimmy.

This fic is soft and sweet. There's a lot of caretaker Dean and domestic vibes. It has the soft vibes of a fic where the two main characters are circling one another and you almost feel like it's inevitable that they will eventually find their way to each other. There is some family trauma, but the angst is largely countered by a lot of intentional healing. Throw in a fantastic cast of characters and this one is definitely worth the read.

If I have any specific art goals for 2023, it’s to hopefully have the chance to work on some more different characters within the SPN ‘verse. I also want to find the time to do some more pieces in my trueform series and character portraits - probably for MomentoCon and wherever else I might see some of the actors I haven’t had the chance to see at a convention yet.  I’ve been working on updating my Teepublic shop with more of my art, so you can get prints, bags, cases, mugs, and of course t-shirts with a lot of these pieces there. I may be opening a redbubble shop soon as well for some of the merch they offer that Teepublic doesn’t (as much as I love Teepublic’s quality and pricing.)

ELLIOT’S 2022 FIC WRAP UP

i originally wanted to keep track of the amount of words i wrote this year, but that kinda fell apart after a few months. i do know that i didn’t write as much this year as i did the years previous, but hey, i also know i’ve published a total of 110,538 words across 14 fics in 2022, and that’s gotta count for something

so, here’s the list of fics i wrote this year and some thoughts on them (continues under the cut):

this one’s the first fic in my supernatural guides series, and when i wrote this i didn’t even know it would become a series. i’ve tried some new things in this one, specifically how to write about grief and playing around with cas’ trueform. i’ve never called this fic a fix-it, but i guess that’s what it is

the birthday present | spn | Dean’s family surprises him on his birthday | 507 words

this is just a soft little birthday ficlet and another excuse for me to give dean tattoos

time will bring him back to you | spn | After a knee injury, Dean Winchester’s ballet career could very well be over. Refusing to think about it too much, Dean returns to his hometown to take some time off and relax. However, when his old ballet teacher Rowena gets sick he has to take over teaching, and he keeps seeing his ex-boyfriend around town. An ex who he definitely doesn’t have any feelings for anymore… right? Castiel Novak has a good life. He loves his two adopted children, Jack and Claire, and he’s happy with his job as a paramedic. There’s nothing more he needs. Least of all having his ex from back when he was a teenager show up suddenly and distract him from what’s important. Which shouldn’t even be a problem because Cas is totally over him… right? With some meddling from Charlie, Dean and Cas find themselves confronted with feelings they thought were left in the past. | 24k words

okay so while i published this fic in 2022, it was mainly written in 2021. it’s the first time i participated in a big bang type event (deancas pinefest!) and it was such a fun experience. i have done ballet pretty much all my life, so i make ballet aus for pretty much every fandom i’m in, but this is the first one i’ve actually written out! it is very dear to me, and i have more ballet fics in my drafts

after writing the previous two guides, i realised that i really liked this universe i’ve created and when another creator celebration with the right prompts came along, the third installment of the guides series was born. it’s a story told through painting walls and i think that’s neat. also, i wrote parts of this while visiting a friend in amsterdam

ohhh boy okay. a sam character study i came up with after a morning of sewing. i’m very proud of it, however i do think it’s a little cursed

hunting contact | spn | After Hibbing, Jody becomes Donna’s first contact concerning everything supernatural. What starts as professional calls slowly develops into something much more personal, and Jody has to juggle with her job, keeping Donna up-to-date with information on monsters, making a home for Alex and Claire, and realising that there’s more to the blossoming friendship between her and Donna. | 11k words

a jodydonna fic! i’ve wanted to write this one for years, it’s just a comfortable little fic about donna becoming a permanent part of jody’s life. also claire and alex are there and i love them

[insert mamma mia quote here] | spn | Claire Winchester has long resigned to not knowing who their second parent is, but when they find their dad's journal from the summer they were conceived, there's suddenly three possible other fathers. Claire decides to invite them all to their upcoming wedding, convinced that they are going to recognise their father on sight. What could go wrong? Dean Winchester may not understand why his child wants to get married at twenty-two, but he wants to give Claire and Krissy the perfect wedding nonetheless. Now, that would be much easier if there weren't those three guys from his past running around on the island, who cannot under any circumstances find out about Claire. And no, Dean does not still have feelings for one of them. At least that's what he keeps telling himself. | currently at 33k words

BIG SIGH okay. okay. i was supposed to finish this fic within the year but hey, here we are, the last day of 2022, and we’re only slightly over the midway point. i’m a little sad about that actually, cause this fic is so fun! it’s a mix of my favourite things (mamma mia and transnatural) and it is the best thing i have ever come up with. but i am still working on it, so it’s not abandoned! i would never abandon it it’s much too important to me, i’m just inconsistent and can’t stick to schedules

Fire in the Dark | spn | With his brother Sam out of town, Dean and the other forest rangers in his small town in West Virginia must figure out why the forest has become disorienting to those that know it best and, with Cas’ help, concoct a plan that will set it back to normal. | 32k words

okay, first off only around half of the words in this fic were written by me, the other are from ely @/juliept who agreed to try and write a horror fic with me! which was a very fun process. it’s not the first time we’ve co-written, but this one felt different, because i was the one who came up with the concept, and i love how it came to life with our words

7. Best cinematography moment

Cas' entrance is iconic af, but i have to go with the angels falling at the end of season 8.. 

there's So Much in this scene: Cas under a starry night sky stepping out of a forest turning the seasons is beautiful, then we cut to Dean watching the angels fall with the church steeple silhouette, plus we actually see an angel fall! (trueform would've been better but it being a vessel doesn't detract from the epicness of this moment)

it wasn't just The Best visually awesome moment in the series, it was the best use of special fx in the entire show, my fave season cliffhanger, and featured a bunch of stuff for meta lovers.  

and now I'm thinking about Dean's habit of not knowing a good thing when he sees it/not letting himself have it, yet he recognises Bad Shit right away. I'm thinking about Cas storming into that barn in a hail of sparks and Dean's response versus him watching the angels fall and worrying if Cas is among them.

Hi <3 I'm researching biblically accurate angel trueform for my WIP. I have to say, it's been some months since i read your All my secret wishes series and i am still stunned and in awe today by the way you've managed to describe the abstract and the metaphysical aspect of heaven/angels. It really stuck with me.

You read like someone who knows a lot about the subject, so i was wondering (if i recall correctly ����) why did you choose to represent Cas more like an Ophanim, when he's a Seraph? I haven't read many fics with Cas' trueform but the few ones I've stumbled across depicted him (kind of) like that too (rings full of eyes gravitating around one big eye, as opposed to the Seraphs' description of basically 3 sets of wings and nothing more).

Hi! I don't actually know much about the subject, I just grew up Eastern Rite Catholic and absorbed a little bit about angels through osmosis. Like, Anna is kinda based on the icons of Seraphim that were in the church I went to. And Naomi is based on the angel character that was in A Wind In The Door (the sequel to A Wrinkle In Time).

Cas is based on stuff that I vaguely remember from reading the Bible, like, 20 years ago, and just elements from my favourite fan depictions of his true form.

The decisions I made about the angel depictions were entirely secondary to what I wanted to do with them in the story. I wanted all three of them to be physically distinct from each other. And all of them had to be capable of fighting, so none of them could be *just* wings, or *just* wheels. Naomi has claws specifically for the comparison to medical instruments; Anna has swords to give her an "avenging angel"/justice vibe. So Cas' method of fighting had to be something different, hence the animal heads. I also wanted him to have several different components so that there could be multiple ways that he was permanently injured - blinded, scarred, etc. And I just really like the imagery of Cas having a wheel that wobbles and clunks as it turns, in addition to everything else wrong with him, I feel like it completes the picture. That's why he has wheels/rings too.

idk how helpful that is, but that's how I went about it.

thinking about late seasons cas needing to go back in time for whatever reason and crossing paths w pre-series cas by accident; ps cas is horrified by ls cas, in all his haunted, broken glory — his trueform mangled beyond repair from falling more than once, from becoming human and consuming grace from the veins of other angels to regain his divinity, from dying and being restored over and over again. he is everything ps cas has been taught to fear becoming, faithless and fallen and weak, and he tells ls cas as much. ls cas just laughs. he says yes, i know, but it was all worth it. and ps cas asks what was? and ls cas doesnt want to give too much away, doesnt want to risk changing too much of this castiel’s future, so he just says “dean winchester” and leaves it at that. and so ps cas goes on with his angel business, tries to forget about the mangled future version of himself and vows to never let that happen. repeats that same vow to himself as he plunges into the depths of hell to save none other than THE dean winchester himself. and then he sees him, sees his soul shining through the murk and the violence and the fire, brighter and more beautiful than anything castiel has ever seen, and he saves him. he grips him tight and raises him from perdition and looks off the cliff knowing exactly what’s waiting for him at the bottom, what and who he will become because of this. and he jumps anyway.

Time for another installment of River reads too much! Get your freshly minted fic recs.

Camp chitaqua by teen_dean @urne-buriall (Teen, 38k)

This fic is pure cuteness and joy, with some soft pining. Dean is ramping up for another year of summer camp. A mixture of training and fun for hunter kids, Dean pours himself into supporting kids going through traumas like the ones he survived. But the introduction of a mysterious and seriously hot new counselor (and his adorable son) throws Dean a curveball. 

This one has some great "Dean with kids" vibes and some great Dadstiel. It had me smiling and outright laughing at times. Plus we love a messy disaster Dean in this house. 

Bitch Better Have my Money (Series), by duckyboos @duckyboos-blog (5 works, Explicit, 254k words, another installment may be coming) 

Okay I am late to the party on these, so a lot if people have gotten to meet the mobster murder husbands, but I have to recommend this series anyway (with the caveat to mind the tags because things do get gory). 

Dean and Cas are such reluctantly horny for each other disasters in this fic and I basically devoured the entire thing in an embarrassingly bloodthirsty manner. The fic is loosely a Bad Girls AU where Dean, Sam and Charlie accidentally steal from Cas (a seriously bad crime boss), but neither seems to be able to resist the pull of the other. Dean finds himself being pulled into Cas' world and what he finds there opens up entirely new possibilities.

Take the long way home by dothraki_shieldmaiden @dothwrites (Explicit, 95k)

If you want a soft, healing fic that will in turn destroy you and leave you with a soft peace, this is the fic for you. 

Dean has retired and is restoring an old house, hoping that someday it will be a home. Cas is newly human and on the road, trying to prove to himself he's worthy. Sam and Jack are off on a road trip. In other words, things are fractured. But with quiet determination, maybe they can restore more than the house. 

Oh this one hurts so good. I, unfortunately, downloaded it for a plane and had to pretend to be normal in public while Doth broke me apart and put me back together. But the story is so good and the landing is smooth. 

Lazy ass rising by Fellshish @fellshish (Teen, 7.5 k)

Fells continues to perfect the art of making you laugh your ass off only to slip in a line so devastating and vulnerable, you feel your entire chest crack. 

Cas is back. Kind of. He needs a vessel to shack up in while Jack rebuilds his and Dean is willing to oblige. More than willing. Maybe a little too willing but there's no time to unpack that. 

Little does Dean know that Cas has nefarious plans to pamper Dean and feed him vegetables and make him nap. The horror!

It's about the time and space to be and the caretaker finally learning to accept tenderness and care himself. It's soft and sweet and hilarious all at once.

The Angel of Emetgis V by KaylieMalinza @kayliemalinza (T, 28k)

It's so many of my favorite things. Angel lore, science fiction, trueform!Cas and smart and competent Dean. This fic is so incredibly entertaining and the worldbuilding is amazing. 

After making a deal to save his brother, Dean is stationed on the Emetgis V, a broken down space station and vestige of a great migration of humans from the failing Earth. Years ago, it's said angels appeared and saved humanity by powering ships that took them to safety. But that's the thing of myth and legend. That is until Dean is doing routine maintenance outside the ship and he fines a glowing sentient orb of light.

PS, yes I did a list of trueform fics and neglected to mention this one yesterday. Nonny, come read this one!

More Than Kisses by FriendofCarlotta @friendofcarlotta (Explicit, 29k)

I'm admittedly a sucker for an epistolary romance, and this one hits just right. In an attempt to avoid repeating 11th grade, Dean agrees to join a pen pal extracurricular program. Things get off to a rocky start, but Dean and his pen pal, Cas, soon find themselves confiding in one another. Over the years, they become a constant in each other’s lives. But the status quo is threatened when Cas gets a new opportunity.

This fic is all about the emotional intimacy. Dean and Cas are both so lonely at times and the way they connect in letters is beautiful to watch. There’s a vulnerability but also a safety to writing letters and FriendofCarlotta really digs into that. There's something soft about this fic that makes it a comfort read.

You know how sometimes you read something that is so clearly a love letter to the subject matter that you kinda just want to bask in it? Yeah, that's this fic. Resident fandom cowboy enthusiast ValleyDean explores what would happen if Dean and Cas were sent to Tombstone and Cas had to use Doc Holliday as a vessel.

There are layers of pining as Dean and Cas compete with Doc and Wyatt for biggest dumbasses (affectionate). It's funny, entertaining and surprisingly poignant with some lines that will make you want to stare at the ceiling when you should be sleeping. 

You're My Dream Come True by Redamber79 (Explicit, 29k)

If you are looking for some fluffy, filthy smut with a side if heart melting friends to lovers sweetness, this is the fic for you. Dean and Cas are roommates and have been dancing around their mutual attraction for years because they are both idiots (affectionate). But when Cas shares a silly meme, he accidentally catapults them into new territory.

This one is very smutty so mind the tags, but it's their established feelings that set it apart. This Dean and Cas are just so far gone for each other and cocooned it the sweetest (yet dirtiest) little bubble. It's a true delight. 

Research Methods by TatteredBurningWings (angelshotgun) (Explicit, 8k words)

A smutty and hilarious romp in which Dean comes up with increasingly ridiculous reasons to hook up with Cas. This one is a whole lot of fun, particularly as Dean’s excuses for totally platonic bro sex with his bro Cas get more outlandish.

Basically, if you love a good the rituals are intricate fic, this is definitely what you are looking for.

Summary: Dean is in Heaven. He’s got everything he could ever want at his fingertips, a literal eternity of peace laid before him for the having, but he can’t help thinking — how can it really be his Heaven if Cas isn’t there? Then one day, Dean goes for a drive. And at the end of it he finds something he truly did not expect.  Another chance, maybe, to find Cas and confront him about his parting words to Dean. To figure out what it is he wants and to take it, for once, without guilt or shame. Another chance to live free.

Excerpt: Dean opens his eyes to a grey tiled wall with a wire shower caddy hanging from the neck of the showerhead. Freezing water sluices over his skin, stinging. He shakes his head, blinks water out of his eyes, and reaches to turn the shower off, dazed and unsure of how long he’s been standing under the icy spray.  Stepping out of the stall, Dean grabs his towel from its hook and rubs himself dry, scrubbing at his skin harder than necessary, distracted. He frowns, trying to remember what he was doing before he got in the shower in the first place, but drawing a complete blank.  As he heads back up the hallway to his room, Dean thinks it’s strangely quiet in the bunker. Even the constant background hum of the various air filters and machines is… missing. He looks over his shoulder, the eerie weight of unseen eyes on him, and turns to find himself alone, in his room. Everything just as he left it. An empty mug sitting on the nightstand from a few days ago when he’d taken some Advil before bed for his bum knee. He stands in the middle of the room, arms at his sides. He’s in pajamas. Only the bedside lamp is on. His mouth tastes like mint. How… did he get here? What was he doing?  It’s been absolute hell, these last few months, trying to work out what they need so they can trap… someone. Dean isn’t sure who, or why they need to be trapped. Just that it needs to get done. Just another job. When he can’t call up any details, he shrugs and climbs into his bed. Whatever it is, it can wait. Right now, all he’s interested in is lights out. He glances around the room before turning off the light, snuggles down under his comforter. Still can’t drum up what the hell he was doing before he was getting ready for bed, recalling only something about the shower. Dean drifts into the twilight of sleep, dreams and reality intertwining, tossed between them on a gentle wave. One moment is indistinguishable from the next, upending him. He’s staring at the door. The thin strip of light against the backdrop of darkness, solid and long. The thin strip of light broken into pieces by someone’s feet. He holds his breath. On silent hinges, the door swings slowly open. Dean’s heart makes a break for the back of his throat. Terror clawing at him, he reaches under his pillow and finds no weapon stashed there. Hairs on the back of his neck standing on end, he turns to face his fate. There’s no one there.

Good morning. The thing Dean regrets the most is the fact that humans can't see angels trueform without burning their eyeballs. He remembers what happened to Pamela and doesn't want a similar experience. Most days it doesn't even bug him, he's a happily married man and the knowledge that he's going to be with Cas in the afterlife too is more than he's ever dreamed of.

But there are other days when he feels insignificant next to Cas. When his mind is devoured by nasty feelings of inadequacy because Cas deserves something better than a tiny human who isn't able to see his true self. What he is at his core.

Those days are the worst because this feeling reflects on his mood and he hates it. Because it's nothing wrong in his life and he fucking should be grateful for it.

"You know it doesn't have to be like that" Cas says one day.

"What?" he snaps, feeling unsettled. Cas promised he'd never do the feeling reading and Dean believes him. It's just that Cas knows him too well sometimes.

"What you feel" he answer, patiently. "You are more than enough. You are everything to me".

"Yeah, but..."

"You can see me, my true form".

"But I can't..." he makes a gesture with his hands, like his eyes are exploding.

"You can see with more than your eyes, Dean" Cas says, softly. "In my humble opinion they're a quite falible resource".

Now Dean is curious.

"How?", he asks.

"Bring me a scarf"

"Are we getting kinky now, Cas?", he jokes, just because he love the way Cas always say his name in that exasperated tone.

"Dean..."

Five minutes later, Dean has his eyes and ears covered.

"Ok, what are you gonna do now?"

"I'm going to transform. And you can touch me"

"I can touch you?" Dean can't hide is excitement.

"Yes".

"Cool".

There is a quite hush and suddenly the room around him it's a little bit colder.

"Extend your hands and take a step forward" Cas's speaking directly into his head. His voice is a wave that caress each nerve cell with gentle touches.

Dean obeys and it's like he's walking through a rain courtain. It's a nice feeling.

"What is this?"

"A barrier that protects me. It's made of grace".

"And I can go through it just like that?"

"Just because I allow it".

Those five words send a shiver through Dean's spine. It reminds him how powerful Cas trully is. And he's all his. All his.

"What I am touching now? It's soft"

"One of my heads"

"How many dou you have?"

"Multiple. Each one have fifty eyes and a pair of wings with even more eyes".

His fingers touch something pointy that he can guess are his teeth. He doesn't try to count them.

God, you are terrifying and I love you.

"Dean"

"Yes?"

"I don't want to scare you but I'd want to try something. It won't hurt you but I need your full consent first".

Dean can agree to it easily. He knows Cas'd never do him any harm.

"Don't move"

Dean isn't sure what he's expecting but certainly not something a little wet caressing his lips and making them tingle. It's quick and it leaves behind a trail of pure want.

"Did you just...", he seems unable to form words properly.

"Kiss you. Yes."

God. His mind is running with possibilities.

"Cas..."

"Yes, Dean?"

"Does any of your multiple heads have a tongue?"

Cas true form laugh reverberates like a orchestra of tiny bells for a while.
