Have you ever felt the homoerotic tension of a fight to the death? The ecstasy of finding someone who is your true equal in ways that you never knew you needed? Someone who fills your life with such purpose that you would cut it short just to see that purpose fulfilled? Gotten your ass beaten so hard that it made you an atheist? Admittedly this is mostly just a joke ship in the fandom. Atleast; I think it is. It can be real hard to tell sometimes. But if it ain't a damn good joke. Also most; if not all of the dev team is LGBTQ+, so that's pretty neat.

There's something exquisitely beautiful and painful about the relationships among the main characters in Sleepless Domain.

Undine. Undine has this wonderful group of friends that she grew up with, but she's also sort of stuck in this role as the soft one, the sweet one, the nice one, the supportive one. Throughout the series, she learns that she's so much more powerful and capable than she ever imagined, and she finds all of these beautiful new friendships, one of which turns into a romantic relationship. Kokoro, Zoe, Harley, Bud, Vedika... these people see her and admire her in a way that Tessa, Sylvia, Sally, and Gwen never could, because they had been friends forever and were caught in a pattern of the same old roles. There was a Tessa-Sally-Sylvia power struggle with Gwen and Undine in the background. And it's absolutely heartbreaking that Undine only gets to grow beyond that because three of her best friends die.

Kokoro. HP is so elevated and idolized that very few people see her for who she is, to the point that she goes by her magical girl name rather than her given name with most people. Cassidy, for one, puts her on a pedestal and attacks Undine while trying to defend the idea of Heartful Punch that she made up in her head. And Kokoro is rightfully furious with her for hurting Undine, the only person who meets Heartful Punch and isn't starstruck, not for a moment. Even Bud, Harley, and Vedika were fans before they were friends. Zoe is completely intimidated by her. Meanwhile, Undine sees Kokoro as she is, as a friendly dork. A friendly dork who struggles to let people in because she's so afraid of losing them. A friendly dork whose mom and aunt lost their powers for her. A friendly dork whose mom and grandparents ultimately died for her. Of course she and Undine understand each other.

Tessa. Oh, Tessa. She wants so badly to be in control, to be the center. She struggles when her friends become magical girls before her. She struggles when they try to pull away from her as a leader. When they die, she still can't pull the focus away from herself - she blames herself for their deaths and shoves Undine away, self-isolating to the point of self-destruction. She wants Undine to find a new team so that she can be safe, but how can it not hurt for Undine to find that team in another high-powered, pink, popular magical girl? Of course Goops is alluring. Goops wants her. Goops needs her. Isn't it wonderful to be needed again? Isn't it great to be back in control after everything you've ever known has shattered?

Here's What Happens After They Win

The aftermath of the final battle.

This was written for APGeeksOut on AO3 for the 2023 Battleship Exchange. This was an interesting experiment, between writing for a new fandom, writing in future tense, and using a POV that isn't my usual.

"Are you okay?" Undine will ask as her hands ghost over the bruises covering Kokoro's arms, the cuts on Kokoro's face. Undine will no longer be able to soothe the swelling or wash out the cuts with her water powers. She will no longer have powers at all. There will be no more magical girls.

Kokoro will say she's fine, but wince anyways, because she will no longer heal as fast as she once did. Her eyes will still be inherited from her mother. One day, she will look in the mirror, then at a photograph of Mitsuki, and realize that she always had her mother's eyes, even when they were covered by the remnants of her mother's magic.

Kokoro will be concerned that her girlfriend will no longer like her, due to the loss of blue eyes. Undine will laugh, kiss her girlfriend's forehead, and tell Kokoro that it wasn't her eyes that Undine fell for, but her new eyes are pretty like brown tourmaline. Kokoro will blush, not having been fishing for compliments but appreciating it anyways.

They will be involved in rebuilding. Their society, yes, but also their relationships. Undine will be there at the first dinner with Kokoro and her father after the end of magical girls. It will be funny, in a sad way - Kokoro will have been over for dinner at the Wells house for the first time months ago, but she and her girlfriend will have dinner at the Aichi house for the first time together nearly half a year after their first meeting.

Things won't be perfect. People's relationships will change with the truth of magical girls revealed, the loss of magic, and the fall of the barrier. They met because they were magical girls. They met because of a mystery, and when that mystery is solved Undine and Kokoro's relationship will have to change. They will fight each other. They will come out stronger. I hope you and I will come out stronger as well.

I don't know what my future holds, just theirs. But I do know that finally, finally, I will be able to rest. It'll only be a little longer.

Author's Note: I'm imagining that Anemone is saying all of this to the Woman in White before the events of whatever the final battle will be.

Kokoro Aichi | Heartful Punch/Undine Wells | Alchemical Water:

So my Girl Kokoro has a lot of pride, she hates being seen as weak bc of her daddy and mommy issues and because of that hates it when people call her by her real name and tends to prefer to just go by HP in honor of her magical girl title, but within like TWO days of knowing Undine and hearing her call her HP she was just like '...you can call me Kokoro' and then Undine does just that all of HP's friends go absolutely bananas quoting it as 'the forbidden name' and then react even more dramatically when Kokoro just sort of rolls with it. Girl's had it bad since this waterbender pretty girl first tidal waved into her life Meanwhile Undine, whom as a magical girl struggles to kill monsters on her own since her powers are more 'support class' as it is, she's not super strong on her own, kills a HUGE monster in basically one shot when Kokoro is threatened to nearly get swallowed by it, turning her water into essentially a jet cutter. she often has dreams about Kokoro, though only realized she had feelings for her during that noted save, she's ALWAYS worried that just by being around her she's putting a target on her back (bc she's the main character so the bad guys are gunning for her) she seems really chill most of the time bc she's just a really reserved girl but like this girl can and will commit murder to keep her pink gf safe and like- they're canonically super gay end of chapter 15 they kiss for the first time it's great

Napat "Pat" Jindapat/Parakul "Pran" Siridechawat:

Prans been in love with Pat since they were kids, Pat didn't realise that he loved Pran until they met again in Uni and then fights more to keep their relationship because Pran is scared to get sent away again

Childhood enemies to lovers (except Pran was in love with Pat since at least highschool. Probably a lot longer), seperated and then met again at uni. Pat comes to a crashing realisation in like 2 days that he is in LOVE with Pran, confesses to him that same day, and never looks back. Though Pran is hesitant (external pressures keeping them apart like family rivalry, university shenanigans, and already being a secret friendship), Pat pursues him into danger and remains steadfast in his love until Pran is comfortable. He is consistently showing up and proving to Pran that while Pran has been in love for years, Pat's emotions are no less deep, and will always lose to keep Pran happy.

look Pran was out here having his gay angsty awakening as a teenager realizing that he was in love the boy he was supposed to hate because of the rivalry between their family and starts repressing shit meanwhile Pat is living the himbo life and still unaware that his bestie is a lesbian and in love with his sister. it's not until they get to college where Pran is so resigned to his feelings that he doesn't expect anything to happen and then Pat attempts to confess his feelings to his lesbian bestie to which she responds "are you sure about that?" and he suddenly has an epiphany that he's in love with Pran and goes full on "if i don't have this man on me in five minutes i stg"

Petition to allow Undine and Kokoro into the third place bracket since (based on the number of votes they got in their competitions) they would have made it into the semifinals easy if not for being matched up with TGSWII. The heavy hitters besides TGSWII have been Namesake and Sleepless Domain, so I kinda want to see the two of them face off for third place.

This is actually one of the big problems with single-elimination tournaments in general, and one of the reasons I’m so intrigued by the premise of @webcomic-character-tournament. We had quite a few couples who got more votes than nearly anyone else on their day of voting but still got eliminated because they happened to be up against *the* most popular entry (see for instance: when Undine and Kokoro beat Adrian and Hildegard in the Group 1 championship).

Tell you what. I’m not changing plans for the third place or final rounds, but if time permits before I leave on vacation I’ll see if I can cook up something special for all our favorite girls who got sent home too early. Just don’t ask me what it will be, I haven’t figured that part out yet.
