LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
November 7, 2024
Heather Cox Richardson
Nov 07, 2024
Today the Trump family posed for a post-election photo. Missing from the group was former first lady Melania Trump. Joining the family was billionaire Elon Musk, who supported Trump’s campaign both through his ownership of X, formerly Twitter, and then with $132 million in cash and with apparent giveaways to get voters to give the campaign personal information.
As an immigrant from South Africa, Musk is barred from the presidency himself by the U.S. Constitution, which requires that a president be born in the U.S. (out of the Framers’ concern that a foreign country could put a puppet in the presidency). But he is now very close to Trump and stands to gain significantly from a Trump presidency, both through deregulation and government contracts, and through Trump’s planned tariffs on Chinese imports that will enable Musk to monopolize the electric vehicle market in the U.S. Musk also would like a victory in the culture wars; he is strongly opposed to transgender rights.
After the election results came out, Musk posted on X, “Novus Ordo Seclorum,” Latin for “New World Order.”
At Trump’s election party, Trump said: “We have a new star: Elon. He is an amazing guy. We were sitting together tonight—you know he spent two weeks in Philadelphia and different parts of Pennsylvania campaigning? He's a character, he's a special guy. He's a super-genius, and we have to protect our geniuses, we don't have that many of them. We have to protect our super-geniuses.”
Trump’s new closeness with Musk presents an issue for the Republican Party. The president-elect is 78 and has shown signs of mental and physical deterioration, making it possible that someone will need to take his place at some point in the next four years.
The vice president–elect, current Ohio senator J.D. Vance, who is backed by billionaire Peter Thiel, is constitutionally the next in line for the presidency, but neither Musk nor Vance has Trump’s popular support, making it unclear who will take over the leadership of the party if such a takeover is necessary. Whether either can command Trump’s supporters is also unclear.
What is clear is that neither of them has much experience in elected office. Vance was elected senator just two years ago, and Musk comes from the business world.
There is another, major problem for the party, as well: Trump won the election in part by promising everything to everyone, but the actual policies of the MAGA party are unpopular, even with many Republican voters.
Notably, Trump has said he will appoint Musk to head a new government efficiency commission, and Musk has vowed to cut “at least $2 trillion” from the federal budget. Such cuts would decimate government services, including food programs and Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Supplemental nutrition programs disproportionately benefit rural areas, and Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are used much more heavily in counties that support Trump than those that don’t.
That will be a hard circle to square.
So will Trump’s promise to lower consumer costs while also putting tariffs of 10% to 20% on all foreign imports and of 60% on imports from China. Tariffs are borne by consumers, so by definition they will drive prices up. These two promises cannot be reconciled.
Trump has promised mass deportations, and much of his base is fervently behind them. The Republican National Committee even had signs saying “MASS DEPORTATION NOW” made up for attendees to wave at the party’s convention.
Priscilla Alvarez and Alayna Treene of CNN reported today that Trump’s allies have been preparing for mass detentions and deportations of undocumented immigrants, and the stock prices of private prison companies GEO Group and CoreCivic have soared since Trump’s election. Steven T. Dennis of Bloomberg reported that on an earnings call today, GEO chief executive officer Brian Evans told investors that filling currently empty beds could bring in $400 million a year and that the company can scale up its current surveillance, monitoring, and transportation programs to handle millions of immigrants. “This is to us an unprecedented opportunity,” he said.
But deporting up to 20 million people will be a logistical nightmare and is projected to cost from $88 billion to $315 billion a year. At the same time, much of the U.S. economy depends on undocumented immigrants, and Republican businessmen will certainly object to losing their workers.
Tom Homan, who served as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Trump in his first term, backed away from some of the extremes of Trump’s immigration policy when he told CBS last month: “It’s not gonna be—a mass sweep of neighborhoods. It’s not gonna be building concentration camps. I’ve read it all. It’s ridiculous…. They’ll be targeted arrests. We’ll know who we’re going to arrest, where we’re most likely to find ‘em based on numerous, you know, investigative processes.”
Meanwhile, Democratic state lawmakers have been preparing for a potential Trump administration for more than a year, and some are putting down public markers that they will not cooperate with the extreme policies of the Trump administration.
Trump vowed to begin his mass deportation plan in Aurora, Colorado, where he maintained—contrary to the statements of local Republican officials—that Venezuelan gangs had taken over the city. Aurora is a suburb of Denver, and yesterday the mayor of Denver, Mike Johnston, told a reporter he would not cooperate with requests that are “immoral or unethical or unfair.”
California governor Gavin Newsom called an emergency session of the California state legislature to convene on December 2, “to help bolster our legal resources and protect our state against any unlawful actions by the incoming Trump Administration.” It will focus on funding lawsuits against any actions that impact civil liberties, reproductive rights, protection for immigrants, and climate initiatives. Newsom said the California lawmakers “will seek to work with the incoming president—but let there be no mistake, we intend to stand with states across our nation to defend our Constitution and uphold the rule of law.”
California has the fifth largest economy in the world, and its population of 39 million people is more than four times the 9.59 million people in Hungary, the country from which MAGA Republicans are taking much of their ideological vision.
Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker, who has been called a “happy warrior,” held a press conference today, telling reporters that he will continue working to keep Illinois “a place of stability and competent governance” and vowing to protect the people of his state no matter what the new administration does. “To anyone who intends to come take away the freedom and opportunity and dignity of Illinoisans: I would remind you that a happy warrior is still a warrior,” he said. “You come for my people, you come through me.”
Trump has made it clear he intends to have a say in the decisions of the Federal Reserve, which manages interest rates, and during his first term he frequently attacked Fed chair Jerome Powell, whom he appointed, for not lowering rates to boost the economy. Trump’s advisors have suggested the president can gain power over the nation’s finances by removing members of the Fed in his next term.
Today, when reporters asked Powell if he would resign before Trump takes office, he said no. When asked if Trump could fire or demote him or the other Fed governors, Powell was firm: “Not permitted under the law.”

FUN FACT: Namekian Dracula wants to buy a car.
Also, the ending to Lord Slug is the deepest cut of a continuity reference Toei has ever made and I'm super suspicious about it.
(This is the best Z movie. I SAID WHAT I SAID.)
It's pretty well-known that the Z movies aped the hell out of the original story arcs.. Pretty much every Z movie is Playing The Hits, remixing story elements from existing Dragon Ball arcs into an "original" Frankenstein's Monster of derivative material.
Lord Slug is the most on-the-nose it ever gets, in the sense that this guy is Piccolo.
Like. It's so on-the-nose, Kaio even says multiple times "He's JUST LIKE PICCOLO!"
He's JUST LIKE PICCOLO.
JUST LIKE PICCOLO.
It's amazing how shameless this is. They aren't even pretending this is an Original Character Do Not Steal, the way they do with most of the other movie villains. He's just Piccolo Again. We made Piccolo Again. Do you want to see Goku fight Piccolo Again?
So. What's his deal, exactly?
Slug has a birth defect where he's evil.
He just. He was born evil. I don't know what to tell ya. On rare occasions, Namekians will be born pure evil. And not just any evil, but Mazoku evil.
There are a number of words in Japanese that mean demon, spirit, wicked thing, etc. Most of them are derived from the word 'ma', which can mean demon or evil or magic or just... general occult stuff. Piccolo is the Dai-ma-o or Great Demon King. His offspring are Ma-zoku, or the Demon Clan.
Slug's followers are also Mazoku. It's never clearly explained how, exactly, Slug creates his Mazoku. I guess being made pure evil as a birth defect means he's a demon. The movie is aggressively disinterested in explaining Slug. He just. Is.
But Slug's Mazoku aren't just any kind of demon. The movie gives them a peculiar trait that Piccolo's Mazoku never had.
They're vampires.
When Slug and his forces arrive on Earth, they're initially forced to wear all of this protective gear to shield them from the purifying light of the sun. Even Slug himself, despite being more resilient than the others, is forced to remain under this giant Dracula cloak to protect him from being destroyed by it.(T
(Thank you, Medamatcha, for spontaneously explaining vampire weaknesses to Vampire Zarbon and Vampire Dodoria.)
Fortunately for them, they're old-hat when it comes to terraforming. They didn't come to Earth to conquer. Though they do pay lip service to the idea that Slug is some sort of galactic monarch....
His intentions for Earth are a bit more... oddball. You see, Slug's in the market for a new car.
I think they came up with this idea as a way to distinguish him from Frieza. Because, in addition to being Piccolo, Slug is also Frieza. Frieza's a real estate mogul who kills planets to sell them at markup, so they came up with the idea that Slug's killing planets for automotive manufacturing.
Slug travels the universe in a vehicle called the Planet Cruiser, which is precisely what it sounds like: A rogue planet retrofitted into being a spaceship. The process of manufacturing a Planet Cruiser is, however, quite lethal to the inhabitants of the world.
But that's fine because hostile conditions for people are optimal for space vampires. Also they blot out the sun for obvious reasons.
And that's the plot of Lord Slug. Namekian Dracula wants to buy a car - and also happens to find Dragon Balls here to restore his youth by happenstance. His plans are thwarted when Goku and Piccolo wipe out his Mazoku forces, and when Goku remembers a cut of Dragon Ball lore so deep and obscure that I'm honestly startled by it.
During Goku's training under Kaio, he learns to form the Genki-Dama or Spirit Bomb. This is Goku's most iconic desperation move. In addition to its three canon appearances, it shows up in a lot of these movies and GT. But there's an... interesting quality to it that the manga just plum forgot about.
When Kaio teaches Goku the technique, he explains it like this:
The Genki-Dama can borrow energy from inanimate objects, the atmosphere, people, animals, trees... all kinds of things. And, with this technique, Goku could even learn to tap into the immeasurable power of the sun itself.
Toriyama seems to have forgotten he wrote that. It never comes up again. And that's weird because there is one particular situation where it should have come up again.
This was it. The time to take that gun down off the shelf and fire it was here. Toriyama's written Goku into a position where he needs to somehow form a Genki-Dama vastly more powerful than the one from Earth, on a dead planet with little to work with... orbiting three suns.
If there was ever a time for Goku to fulfill Kaio's foreshadowing and whip out a Solar Genki-Dama, it was here.
I honestly wonder if Toei swiped the idea of a Solar Genki-Dama from Toriyama. We know they tried to jump the gun on Goku becoming a Super Saiyan. That's what this is about.
This was supposed to be the Super Saiyan transformation in its entirety. Toei wanted Goku to become a Super Saiyan in the movie first, prior to it happening in the manga, but the design hadn't been finalized so the final product doesn't look quite right.
The movie's even called "Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiyan Son Goku". That's the title of the film, even though it's only in the movie for like two minutes and barely accomplishes anything before the fight moves on like this never happened.
If they'd succeeded in making this the debut appearance of the Super Saiyan it would be horribly disappointing.
Toei later did it again, when they scooped Goku and Vegeta performing the Fusion Dance out from under Toriyama, forcing him to come up with Potara to make his fusion in the manga distinctive.
So I genuinely wonder if they scooped the Solar Genki-Dama from him. Because Toei's nowhere near good enough at Dragon Ball continuity for a cut this deep. It is bafflingly original, creative, and consistent to established canon.
Nonetheless, here we are. Faced with the power of Namekian Dracula, Goku remembers this special characteristic of his technique and hits Slug with the raw vampire-destroying might of the sun.
Goku does a lot of Genki-Damas throughout these films and they tend to blur together.
But this? This is such a perfect way to kill Namekian Dracula. If this is the character you're going to make Goku face, I can think of no better way to end the fight than by punching him in the face with the goddamn sun.

Israel is demolishing northern Gaza and fortifying military positions, imagery shows
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/12/23/gaza-north-israel-jabalya-palestinians/
Israel is carrying out mass demolitions and erecting military fortifications in residential areas of northern Gaza where tens of thousands of Palestinians have been forced to flee their homes, according to satellite imagery, verified videos and interviews.
As areas are emptied of Palestinians, Israeli forces have demolished entire neighborhoods, established military fortifications and built new roads, according to a Washington Post analysis of high-resolution satellite images. The visual evidence shows almost half of Jabalya refugee camp was demolished or cleared between Oct. 14 and Dec. 15, connecting a preexisting road in the west to an expanded vehicle track in the east — carving out a military axis that stretches from the sea to the border fence with Israel.
The establishment of this corridor, the clearing of tracts of land on either side of it and the construction of square-shaped protected outposts resemble the IDF's transformation of the Netzarim Corridor, a strategic Israeli military zone in the center of Gaza, analysts said. While Israeli forces cut the Netzarim Corridor through a lightly populated, largely agricultural area, Israel's operations in the north are centered in dense urban neighborhoods — effectively destroying northern Palestinian cities.
As of Dec. 1, a third of all buildings across the North Gaza governate had been destroyed since the beginning of the war — including more than 5,000 in Jabalya, more than 3,000 in Beit Lahia and more than 2,000 in Beit Hanoun, according to the latest data from the U.N. Satellite Center. Sixty percent of the destruction in the Jabalya refugee camp took place between Sept. 6 and Dec. 1, the data showed, and the demolitions and displacement have continued in the weeks since.
A satellite image taken Dec. 15 shows widespread devastation across Beit Lahia and Jabalya, with a market, mosque, shops and homes flattened into heaps of concrete and dust. On Dec. 4, the Israeli military forced 5,500 people sheltering in schools in Beit Lahia to flee south to Gaza City, according to the U.N. humanitarian affairs office.
Earlier this month, former Israeli defense minister Moshe Ya'alon told local media in a series of interviews that the IDF was carrying out "ethnic cleansing" in northern Gaza. "Beit Lahia no longer exists, Beit Hanoun no longer exists, and now they are working on Jabalya," he said.
In interviews conducted by phone and text message over multiple weeks, 10 northern Gaza residents described to The Post the widespread targeting of civilian neighborhoods by Israeli forces, dangerous mass evacuations where men and teenage boys were separated from women and children, as well as the abuse and arbitrary detention of some of those trying to flee. Their accounts were consistent with photos and videos verified by The Post of mass screenings and arrests, as well as attacks on civilians.
"In northern Gaza, there is nothing left that sustains life," said Beit Lahia resident Said Kilani, 41. "Everything has been destroyed to force people out."
In the first three weeks of the IDF's new offensive in the north, more than 1,000 people were killed, the health ministry estimated, adding it was probably an undercount with so many bodies still on the streets or buried under rubble. Gaza's civil defense service said on Oct. 23 it could no longer operate safely there, leaving the area without ambulances or rescue workers.

BREAKING: In a shocking move from the “Small Government” crowd, Idaho has now banned *checks notes* displaying testicles on vehicles.

HB 270 Section 2 DECLARES trans people not wearing shirts is AN EMERGENCY
This is about controlling expression, and portends further legislative discrimination against genderqueer people. It reinforces a “common enemy” to distract individuals from the other failings of the Trump Administration and their supporters:
Crashing the stock market, outbreaks of multiple fatal illnesses, exploding inflation, cutting billions of dollars from state health services, a modern-day gestapo-to-concentration-camp pipeline, destruction of social security and welfare systems, breaches of data privacy and security, logging and mining in protected oceans and National Parks, removal of protections and federal support systems for women and veterans, backing out of programs and treaties regarding the exponentially worsening climate crisis, funding ethnic cleansing / genocide / mass displacement while cutting foreign aid, and the continuous stream of broken laws and trampled civil rights protections the Trump administration leaves in its wake, as well as the nation- and worldwide protests / boycotts in response.
Bills like this - worse ones - will likely be passed across the US in the coming months. Please don’t lose yourself in fear. Mourn the struggles we’re facing, but don’t be consumed by anger - use it. Everyone is capable of different things; figure out what you can do, then figure out how to do it again, and again, and again.
Call your representatives, visit their offices in person, attend protests, donate to causes / people in need, honor boycotts as much as possible, process internalized bigotry and change patterns in thought / behavior, gather information and share it with others, have the “difficult” conversations with your loved ones, take part in local elections and town hall meetings, the list is endless.
Know your local laws and bills in progress, determine what you can do for your community, and use any privilege you may have to support those without it. Don’t forget to check on the people you care about, especially those in the direct line of fire rn; it’s uplifting to hear someone is thinking about you.
We’ve beaten systemic discrimination through collective action and community support before, I choose to believe we will do it again.

(PrR)One Month of Ongoing Ethnic Cleansing & Genocide Carried Out by the Occupation Army in North Gaza:
Over 1,800 Martyrs, 4,000 Injured, the Destruction of Hospitals & Infrastructure
Government Media Office: For an entire month, the occupation army has waged an intense, multi-pronged attack by land, air, and sea on northern Gaza, targeting areas such as Jabalia Camp, Jabalia Al-Balad, Jabalia Nazla, Beit Lahia, Beit Lahia Project, Beit Hanoun, and surrounding areas. This ongoing attack has claimed the lives of over 1,800 martyrs, injured 4,000, and left hundreds missing. All hospitals in northern Gaza have been destroyed and rendered inoperative, (https://t.me/PalestineResist/66019) civil defense teams have been targeted and some detained, and essential services, including water, sewage systems, roads, and streets, have been devastated, turning North Gaza into a disaster zone in every sense.
This brutal and savage attack (https://t.me/PalestineResist/57132) by the occupation has targeted civilians, residential neighborhoods, and safe shelters, killing and injuring hundreds of displaced persons, forcing thousands to flee their homes, and driving them into forced displacement. The ongoing killing, destruction, and forced eviction by the "israeli" occupation army are clear signs of a plan to uproot and displace our great Palestinian people once again, in a repetition of the events of 1948, with US backing and approval to commit more massacres and killings.
The aggression goes further, as the occupation has committed additional crimes against humanity, including using starvation and deprivation tactics. The occupation has blocked the entry of 3,800 aid and supply trucks into northern Gaza, deliberately starving nearly 400,000 people, including over 100,000 children, denying them food, water, medicine, and infant formula. The occupation has also destroyed dozens of shelters housing tens of thousands of displaced people who fled their homes seeking safety, only to encounter killing in every form used by the occupation—from fighter jets and drones to snipers, field executions, tank and vehicle attacks, explosive barrels, the demolition of homes, mosques, institutions, neighborhoods, and the bombardment of hospitals. Markets have been targeted, with massacres committed that resulted in the cold-blooded killing of hundreds. Humanitarian services have been completely prevented, medical teams deprived of food, detained, and tortured, and even polio vaccination campaigns have been blocked.
The atrocities facing our Palestinian people are beyond control and logic. Even the strongest nations would collapse within weeks under such conditions. In light of this, we emphasize the following:
We strongly condemn the occupation’s perpetration of crimes against humanity, massacres, and genocide, targeting tens of thousands of civilians, children, and women in North Gaza with deliberate and intentional brutality. We call upon all countries worldwide to condemn these horrific massacres against residential neighborhoods, civilians, hospitals, medical teams, mosques, and various civil institutions.
We hold the occupation, along with the US, UK, Germany, France, and other countries complicit in this genocide, fully responsible for the ongoing war and crime of genocide against our Palestinian people, particularly in North Gaza, which is being subjected to genocide systematic killing.
We call on the international community and all UN and international organizations to fulfill their mandated roles and adhere to international and humanitarian law by providing humanitarian, health, and relief services, as well as civilian protection to hospitals, institutions, and residential areas. We further urge them to exert all available pressure on the occupation to end its heinous and inhumane crimes against humanity and to halt the genocide against unarmed civilians in Gaza, with special urgency for North Gaza.
Glory and eternity to our righteous martyrs. Complete recovery for our heroic wounded. Full freedom for our courageous prisoners in the occupation’s prisons. Salute, all salute to the great Palestinian people.

His Last Bow
Originally titled in full "His Last Bow. The War Service of Sherlock Holmes" and later "His Last Bow: An Epilogue of Sherlock Holmes", this was originally published in 1917.
It is the final story in His Last Bow, the final short story in the canon covered by Letters from Watson and agreed by all the key chronologists to be the final canon appearance of Holmes and Watson.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had openly supported British entry into the First World War in 1914.
The story came about after a visit to the Western Front in 1916; asked by a French general what Holmes was doing, Doyle had responded that he was too old to serve. He then decided to write this story as a means of boosting morale.
To put it mildly, the British public had gone a bit spy-crazy in the lead up to the war; fearing "Teutons serving them croutons" i.e. Germans living in the UK acting as intelligence agents for the Kaiser.
The Riddle of the Sands is one such work of popular literature on this theme, which is the subject of Letters from Carruthers coming in September.
There was also the fantastical works of William Le Queux, who started off with the French and Russians as his enemies before switching to the Germans; he also had his works serialised in the Daily Mail, a British middle-market tabloid that was founded in 1896 and has been happily engaging in right-wing sensationalism since to the point Wikipedia has banned them as a source. Le Queux for his part believed the Germans were out to get him for exposing their spy networks - he hadn't, they weren't and the Metropolitan Police refused him protection.
The Benz company had produced the first practical motor car in 1885; they of course later merged with Daimler to become Mercedez-Benz. I cannot find a 100hp example of their vehicles.
The German Chancellor in 1914, Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg, was a moderate, who reluctantly went along with many German policies like unrestricted submarine warfare and tried to initiate peace proposals on a number of occasions in the war before being ousted in 1917.
Flushing is the historical English name for the Dutch port of Vlissingen; it had a ferry connection to Sheerness until 1994.
At the outbreak of war, diplomats on both sides were allowed to return home unmolested, after locking down their embassies and burning anything sensitive they could not take with them.
Britain, France and Prussia had signed a treaty in 1839 guaranteeing the neutrality and independence of Belgium. The German invasion of the country on 3 August gave the UK justification for war and moved a Cabinet divided over the matter to firm unity.
There was a fear of Irish civil war at this point; the Liberal government, reliant on Irish and Labour support for a Commons majority after the two elections of 1910, had passed legislation creating a devolved government for the island, called Home Rule. This was vehemently opposed by Ulster Protestants and both sides were receiving weapons - from Germany in fact - in preparation for a fight as Whitehall tried to arrange a compromise. The Germans in fact believed the British would be distracted by a civil war, but in fact the Home Rule legislation was suspended for the duration and both militias decided to support the war effort. That stopped things... until the more radicial Irish Republic Brotherhood launched the Easter Rising of 1916.
"Window-breaking Furies" refers to the suffragette movement that sort votes for women, some of who engaged in direct action like breaking windows and also planting bombs or arson, although they made sure the latter was done when the buildings were empty to avoid killing anyone. These tactics were as controversial at the time as the tactics of modern-day groups like Just Stop Oil. When the war broke out, the suffragettes stopped their militant actions and supported the war effort; their imprisoned members being released as part of an amnesty.
John Bull is a national personification of the UK, typically a stout middle-aged man in a Union Jack waistcoast, frequently seen in cartoons at this time. He rather fell out of popular use post-war and is rarely seen today, unlike Britannia, who remains a widely used figure.
The Rosyth Dockyard was built from 1909 for refitting Royal Navy ships and submarines; although now privatised, it retains that role and is currently building the five Type 31 frigates.
Carlton Terrace was the home of the German Embassy until 1945; after the war, the property and its contents were sold off at auction. The Federal Republic of Germany set up at Belgrave Square in 1951 and remains there to this day.
Junkers were the land-owning aristocracy of Prussia, who exercised considerable political power up until 1945, at which point most of their holdings ended up in the USSR, Poland or what became East Germany. The land was broken up, usually ending up in collective farms; accused of war crimes, those Junkers who ended up in Soviet hands frequently ended up in NKVD camps or even executed. Their descendants did not get them back after reunification.
The King's English is another name for Received Pronunciation, the "standard" dialect and accent of British English.
Tokay or Tokaji is a sweet wine from the Tokaj regions of Hungary and Slovakia, the designation being protected under EU law in a similar way to Champagne. Imperial Tokay, which was the highest quality Tokaji Essencia, was reserved for the Austrian imperial cellars, often being passed to other European monarchs as gifts. This stuff is still drinkable after over 200 years and even the relatively new stuff isn't cheap.
A naval flotilla would be based at Harwich in both World Wars.
The reference to Holmes being sixty here is where the common estimate of 1854 being his birth year comes from.
Portland is a prison and young offenders' institution in Dorset. Notable past inmates include George Edalji (whose miscarriage of justice was exposed by Doyle), John Babbacombe Lee ("The Man They Couldn't Hang") and the controversial comedian Roy "Chubby" Brown.
Fratton is an area of Portsmouth.
In reality, the Home Section of the Secret Service Bureau, later MI5, had managed to identify the key German agents by monitoring their postal correspondence. The police then rounded them up in August 1914 and once the cross-sea cables were cut, contact with any agents in the UK became close to impossible. Little intelligence of any use came from them in any event; the Germans seem to have not even been aware of the British Expeditionary Force being sent to France, which was hardly a small event. Gustav Steinhauer, head of German naval intelligence's British section, got subjected to a rant about his agency's incompetence from the Kaiser that lasted the better part of two hours.
Twelve German spies would be executed during the war, eleven by firing squad at the Tower of London, which hosted its final execution (also of a spy) in 1941.
Skibbareen is a town in County Cork, now in Ireland.
The final speech by Holmes at the end also featured in the 1942 Basil Rathbone film Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror, based on this story.
So Holmes and Watson drive off into the sunset. What happened to them after that? All we know is that both survived the war and at some point Dr Watson stopped writing about his dear friend. They deserve to have had a long retirement.
I will be doing these for the individual chapters of the novels next year; I have already done ones for the first two chapters of A Study in Scarlet that I will repost.

In the U.S. Response to Avian Influenza, Echoes of Covid-19 - Published Sept 2, 2024
By Joshua Cohen
It’s been about five months since the Texas Department of State Health Services announced that a worker on a dairy farm had tested positive for avian influenza A (H5N1) virus after being exposed to apparently infected cattle. Since then, the U.S. public health response has been slow and disjointed, bringing back memories of how the federal government responded during the early phase of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Despite having a pandemic playbook in early 2020, the U.S. appeared flat-footed in its response to Covid-19, including inadequate testing and unavailable personal protective equipment. And throughout the pandemic, mixed messaging on masks and later vaccines set back public health efforts.
As H5N1 circulates, it seems that lessons from Covid-19 remain unlearned. It appears that missteps are being made regarding testing, surveillance, transparency, and failure of communication and coordination throughout the health care system, the same kinds of things that hurt the response to Covid-19.
“The World Health Organization,” according to NPR, “considers the virus a public health concern because of its potential to cause a pandemic.” What may be concerning is that the genetic sequence of the Spanish flu that killed between 50 and 100 million people from 1918 to 1919 was later found to be an H1N1 virus that originated in birds and then somehow adapted to humans. And based on confirmed cases, the case fatality rate could be as high as 50 percent, as over the past two decades roughly half of about 900 people around the globe known to have contracted bird flu died from it. (There are two caveats, however: Due to limited testing, there were likely more cases that were undetected which would lower the mortality rate. And in the last two years, the global case fatality rate seems to have decreased.)
As of Aug. 30, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that 196 dairy cow herds in 14 U.S. states have confirmed cases of avian influenza.
There have been 14 reported cases in humans since 2022, all of whom were exposed to cattle or poultry, and reports suggest that there may be even more sick farm workers who haven’t been tested. There’s no evidence the virus has started to spread among people, but that could change as the situation evolves. The possibility of spillover is always of concern to experts. One of two main competing theories of coronavirus origins and how it evolved into a human-to-human transmissible infection is zoonotic transfer from mammals sold at a wet market in Wuhan, China, to humans.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack declared at a press conference in June that his department “is trying to corner the virus,” while releasing a report that human activity is a conduit to bird flu being transmitted between animals when workers, cows, vehicles and equipment move between farms.
But experts have voiced sharp criticism of the U.S. government’s response, especially around the lack of comprehensive surveillance efforts to ascertain the extent of the outbreak. When interviewed by KFF Health News, Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at the Brown University School of Public Health said, “We’re flying blind.” Without sufficient testing, it’s impossible to know how many animals and humans have been infected or whether the virus has begun to spread between people.
As could have been learned from the Covid-19 experience, integral to conventional approaches to curbing transmission of infectious diseases is a comprehensive set of track, isolate, and contact trace policies. These have not been systematically implemented.
"Without a collective effort across all states, there’s nothing to stop avian flu from spreading around the country."
Michigan stands out as a state with a robust policy to track human and animal infections and investigate which activities pose the most risk. First, the state’s chief medical executive told STAT, Michigan tested more individuals this spring than any other state. And then the Department of Health and Human Services in Michigan launched a pioneering effort to detect asymptomatic (silent) bird flu infections among farmworkers. Furthermore, a press release from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development notes that under state rules dairy and commercial poultry producers must implement biosecurity practices, which include establishing cleaning and disinfection protocols at access points for individuals and vehicles.
Investigators believe the virus may have begun to spread in Michigan when workers operating multiple dairy and poultry operations came in close contact with infected cows and moved from one farm to another.
In April, the USDA issued a federal order requiring testing before lactating dairy cattle can be moved across state lines. Michigan, along with nearly two dozen other states, has also issued its own restrictions. But without a collective effort across all states, there’s nothing to stop avian flu from spreading around the country.
Furthermore, how effective can containment be when the USDA’s order only requires testing for bird flu in lactating cows prior to interstate movement, and no other types of animals?
One of the challenges in managing any major outbreak is the question of who’s in charge to coordinate across departments, such as Health and Human Services, Agriculture, and Commerce. For the purpose of inter-department coordination, the Biden administration launched an Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy in 2023.
Among federal agencies, the CDC (housed within the Department of Health and Human Services) appears to be the most actively involved in coordinating state efforts. It has provided assistance for a seroprevalence study in Michigan, to assess whether asymptomatic infections are present in people, for example.
But despite these efforts, there’s lack of clarity around who has jurisdictional authority over what and where. Rick Bright, a virologist and immunologist and former head of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, explained to CNN why he thinks that a more transparent and comprehensive approach to testing and genetic sequencing is needed. He’s concerned that viral adaptations can occur if there are enough opportunities through uncontrolled spread.
The CDC does now have a roadmap, which it announced for preventing and understanding human infection with bird flu and a plan to develop countermeasures. The roadmap’s main objectives include infection prevention by deploying PPE; examination of primary modes of transmission and estimates of incubation periods, duration of infection and severity; monitoring of genetic changes in the virus; and evaluating vaccines and antivirals. CDC Director Mandy Cohen said lessons from Covid-19 have been learned and that CDC is building upon them, for instance, through its wastewater surveillance efforts.
The CDC’s ability to implement these lofty goals may be hampered, however, by seemingly limited resources. The federal government has pledged only modest new funds this year of approximately $200 million to help track and contain H5N1. Separately, the government is allocating $176 million in Moderna to develop an mRNA vaccine against H5N1.
And conspicuously absent are concrete plans, such as how to deploy the stockpile of 10 million doses of avian flu vaccines the federal government currently has as well as the inventory of the antiviral Tamiflu (oseltamivir). By contrast, Finland is now offering vaccines to farmworkers.
"The CDC’s ability to implement these lofty goals may be hampered, however, by seemingly limited resources."
Aside from inadequate funding and preparation, there’s a problem of overcoming public distrust. A survey published in Health Affairs suggests that about 42 percent of American adult respondents in early 2022 said they had confidence in the CDC to provide quality health information during the Covid-19 pandemic, while about a third said they trusted state and local health departments. This may partly explain why the CDC is now having trouble getting farmers to cooperate with even rudimentary tracking and mitigation efforts regarding H5N1.
Lessons from the history of how Covid-19 unfolded underscore the importance of not being complacent in the face of a potential future bird flu pandemic. It would seem imperative to take proactive measures such as systematic testing of animals and humans exposed to the virus, mitigate transmission risk in the dairy and poultry industries, and coordinate federal and state responses.

Why do some car manufacturers make it extremely difficult to change a headlight bulb, sometimes requiring a trip to the dealership?
Why Some Car Manufacturers Make Headlight Bulb Replacement Difficult Replacing headlight bulbs in modern vehicles can feel like navigating an engineering maze, often requiring specialized tools or dealership intervention. This complexity stems from design priorities, regulatory compliance, and advanced technology integration. Below are the key reasons and their implications:
Advanced Lighting Systems
Modern vehicles increasingly use adaptive headlights (e.g., auto-leveling, cornering beams) and integrated LED arrays or laser modules instead of traditional bulbs. These systems are tightly controlled by onboard computers and sensors. For example: Adaptive Headlights: Adjust brightness and direction based on steering input or road conditions. Even minor misalignment can disrupt the entire system, requiring recalibration with proprietary software.
Integrated LED/Laser Modules: Often soldered into sealed assemblies rather than using replaceable bulbs. Replacing them may necessitate swapping the entire headlight unit.
Engineering and Aesthetic Trade-offs
Manufacturers prioritize sleek, aerodynamic designs and compact packaging, which often result in tightly packed engine bays and headlight housings: Space Constraints: Headlights may be fused with grilles, fenders, or bumper components. Accessing the bulb might require removing the wheel well liner, battery, or air filter housing.
Proprietary Fasteners: Custom clips or screws demand specialized tools, discouraging DIY repairs.
Regulatory Compliance and Safety Standards
Strict homologation rules (e.g., SAE, ECE) mandate precise beam patterns, brightness, and alignment. To ensure compliance: Tamper-Proof Designs: Manufacturers discourage aftermarket modifications by sealing systems or using non-standard components. Non-OEM parts risk failing inspections or causing glare hazards.
Self-Leveling Requirements: Adaptive headlights must maintain proper alignment with the road, which can only be reset via dealership diagnostics.
Profit and Service Model
Dealerships and certified repair shops benefit from locked-in servicing: Software Dependencies: Adaptive systems require proprietary diagnostic tools (e.g., OEM scanners) to reset error codes or recalibrate sensors.
Warranty Control: Manufacturers may void warranties if non-certified technicians attempt repairs, steering owners to dealerships.
Safety and Durability Considerations
Sealed Assemblies: Protect sensitive electronics from moisture and dust, ensuring longevity and UV resistance.
Electrical Complexity: Modern bulbs (e.g., HID, LED) require precise voltage regulation. Incorrect handling can damage the vehicle’s electrical system or reduce bulb lifespan.
Key Takeaways Factor Impact on DIY Replacement Advanced Tech Requires calibration tools and software Regulatory Compliance Tamper-resistant designs Aesthetic Design Tight packaging limits access Service Incentives Encourages dealership dependency
Advice for Owners: Consult Manuals: Some models allow bulb access via hidden panels.
Invest in Professional Help: For adaptive or laser systems, dealerships ensure compliance and safety.
Avoid Aftermarket Modifications: Non-homologated parts risk fines or accidents.
While frustrating, these design choices reflect a balance between innovation, safety, and market dynamics. For complex systems, dealerships remain the safest (if pricier) option.

Half a millionweapons obtained by the Taliban in Afghanistan have been lost, sold or smuggled to militantgroups, sources have told the BBC - with the UN believing that some have fallen into the hands of al-Qaeda affiliates.
The Taliban took control of around one million weapons and pieces of military equipment - which had mostly been funded by the US - when it regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, according to a former Afghan official who spoke to the BBC anonymously.
As the Taliban advanced through Afghanistan in 2021, many Afghan soldiers surrendered or fled, abandoning their weapons and vehicles. Some equipment was simply left behind by US forces.
The cache included American-made firearms, such as M4 and M16 rifles, as well as other older weapons in Afghan possession that had been left behind from decades of conflict.
Sources have told the BBC that, at the closed-door UN Security Council's Sanctions Committee in Doha late last year, the Taliban admitted that at least half of this equipment is now "unaccounted" for.
A person from the committee said they had verified with other sources that the whereabouts of half a million items was unknown.
In a report in February, the UN stated that al-Qaeda affiliates, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, and Yemen's Ansarullah movement, were accessing Taliban-captured weapons or buying them on the black market.
The BBC put this to Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesperson for the Taliban government, who told the BBC it took the protection and storage of weapons very seriously.
"All light and heavy weapons are securely stored. We strongly reject claims of smuggling or loss," he said.
A 2023 UN report said the Taliban allowed local commanders to retain 20% of seized US weapons, and that the black market was thriving as a result. These commanders are affiliated to the Taliban but often have a degree of autonomy in their regions.
The UN noted that the "gifting of weapons is widely practiced between local commanders and fighters to consolidate power. The black market remains a rich source of weaponry for the Taliban".
A former journalist in the city of Kandahar told the BBC that an open arms market existed there for a year after the Taliban takeover, but has since gone underground via the messaging service WhatsApp. On it, wealthy individuals and local commanders trade new and used US weapons and equipment - mostly the weapons left by US-backed forces.
The number of weapons recorded by the US body tasked with overseeing Afghan reconstruction projects, known as Sigar, is lower than those cited by our sources, but in a 2022 report it acknowledged it was unable to get accurate information.
The reason given for this was that equipment has been funded and supplied by various US departments and organisations over the years.
Sigar added that there had been "shortfalls and issues with DoD's [Department of Defense] processes for tracking equipment in Afghanistan" for more than a decade.
It also criticised the State Department, adding: "State provided us limited, inaccurate, and untimely information about the equipment and funds it left behind." The department denied this was the case.
This is very much a political issue, and US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that he will reclaim weapons from Afghanistan. He said that $85bn (£66bn) of advanced weaponry was left there.
"Afghanistan is one of the biggest sellers of military equipment in the world, you know why? They're selling the equipment that we left," Trump said during his first cabinet meeting of the new administration.
"I want to look into this. If we need to pay them, that's fine, but we want our military equipment back."
The president's figure has been disputed, as money spent in Afghanistan also funded training and salaries. Also, Afghanistan did not feature in the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's top 25 largest exporters of major arms last year.
In response to Trump's comments, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban's chief spokesperson, told Afghan state TV: "We seized these weapons from the previous administration and will use them to defend the country and counter any threats."
The Taliban regularly parades US weapons, including at Bagram Airfield, which served as the main US-Nato base, and frame them as symbols of victory and legitimacy.
After withdrawing in 2021, the Pentagon claimed US equipment left in Afghanistan was disabled, but the Taliban have since built a capable military using US weapons and gained superiority over rival groups, such as the National Resistance Front and Islamic State Khorasan Province - the regional affiliate of the Islamic State group.
A source from the former Afghan government told the BBC that "hundreds" of unused Humvees, mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles (MRAPs), and Black Hawk helicopters remain in Kandahar warehouses.
The Taliban has showcased some of this captured equipment in propaganda videos, but their ability to operate and maintain advanced machinery, such as Black Hawk helicopters, is limited due to a lack of trained personnel and technical expertise. Much of this sophisticated equipment remains non-operational.
However, the Taliban have been able to utilise more straightforward equipment, like Humvees and small arms, in their operations.
While Donald Trump appears determined to reclaim US weapons from Afghanistan, the former head of Sigar, John Sopko, says such an attempt would be pointless.
At a recent event hosted by the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies, he said that "the cost would exceed its actual value".
Whether Trump will take any action remains to be seen, but, in the meantime, concerns about the spread of weapons in the region and access by militant groups remain unresolved.

unexpected perks of moving to the u.s.a
I can watch Last Week Tonight without jumping over hurdles and VPN acrobatics
Parcels arrive overnight instead of 5-7 days ? magic
every 3rd person has a truck or suv or van of some kind; very handy for moving furniture when you have no vehicle of your own because being under 25, having no USA financial history because I left the country when I was 11, and having an international driver's license makes the process of getting a vehicle unnecessarily challenging
people have actually watched my favorite movies here
everyone else does all the talking, i just have to smile and nod :D
farmers markets are amazing and regular and packed with awesome small businesses
there is so much to do, all of the time? and so much nerdy stuff that I love? i gotta pick and choose how to entertain myself.. and just a relatively short drive away, there's even MORE to do?? you drive an hour in NZ, you might see some cows and like... the giant gumboot, or the giant carrot, or the giant L&P bottle. (although, can't beat the nature walks!)
I've been in the states for a week now; politics get brought up occasionally, but for the most part I am surrounded and protected by a band of likeminded coworkers-becoming-friends. I'm lucky to have a very safe place to transition from my NZ life to my USA life.
And I cannot stress enough how challenging this move has been - all the things you wouldn't think about have come with so many more hurdles than the average person has to deal with due to my circumstances. I have no family in the state I have moved to, and only one friend from childhood within a 2 hour drive. My parents are in New Zealand, a vastly different time zone. I can't ask for help for most things. I have no credit score, no financial history, no background history in general -- background checks on my passport come up as suspicious because I am a "ghost" to the government. That mean I couldn't apply for any kind of financing, and was limited in my selection of essential services including internet/mobile/rent/insurance/banks. I was outright rejected for many of my preferred plans due to the ghost status and had to accept plan B's. For the bank I was rejected in online applications but was able to go in person; however it made for a gruelling delay as with the chaos of moving into a home at 11:30pm on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were a whirlwind, the banks were closed on the weekend, and I had to wait until Monday to establish an account. Then I didn't have a debit card until the next Friday (I had a travel card, don't worry), which meant I couldn't make wire transfers with the bank which further delayed getting a vehicle (BECAUSE I CAN'T APPLY FOR FINANCING). I still don't have a vehicle.
I'm incredibly grateful for the generosity and kindness of the people here who have helped me out. I had only met three via work-related video chat and text before I arrived late Wednesday March 12th, and suddenly I was introduced to a band of others with a willingness to show me kindness and involve me as part of the team. <3

Strange Chinese trade-war recommendations at US Congress
COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF THE COMMISSION’S 2024 RECOMMENDATIONS Part II: Technology and Consumer Product Opportunities and Risks Chapter 3: U.S.-China Competition in Emerging Technologies The Commission recommends:
Congress establish and fund a Manhattan Project-like program dedicated to racing to and acquiring an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) capability. AGI is generally defined as systems that are as good as or better than human capabilities across all cognitive domains and would surpass the sharpest human minds at every task. Among the specific actions the Commission recommends for Congress:
Provide broad multiyear contracting authority to the executive branch and associated funding for leading artificial intelligence, cloud, and data center companies and others to advance the stated policy at a pace and scale consistent with the goal of U.S. AGI leadership; and
Direct the U.S. secretary of defense to provide a Defense Priorities and Allocations System “DX Rating” to items in the artificial intelligence ecosystem to ensure this project receives national priority.
Congress consider legislation to:
Require prior approval and ongoing oversight of Chinese involvement in biotechnology companies engaged in operations in the United States, including research or other related transactions. Such approval and oversight operations shall be conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in consultation with other appropriate governmental entities. In identifying the involvement of Chinese entities or interests in the U.S. biotechnology sector, Congress should include firms and persons: ○ Engaged in genomic research; ○ Evaluating and/or reporting on genetic data, including for medical or therapeutic purposes or ancestral documentation; ○ Participating in pharmaceutical development; ○ Involved with U.S. colleges and universities; and ○ Involved with federal, state, or local governments or agen cies and departments.
Support significant Federal Government investments in biotechnology in the United States and with U.S. entities at every level of the technology development cycle and supply chain, from basic research through product development and market deployment, including investments in intermediate services capacity and equipment manufacturing capacity.
To protect U.S. economic and national security interests, Congress consider legislation to restrict or ban the importation of certain technologies and services controlled by Chinese entities, including:
Autonomous humanoid robots with advanced capabilities of (i) dexterity, (ii) locomotion, and (iii) intelligence; and
Energy infrastructure products that involve remote servicing, maintenance, or monitoring capabilities, such as load balancing and other batteries supporting the electrical grid, batteries used as backup systems for industrial facilities and/ or critical infrastructure, and transformers and associated equipment.
Congress encourage the Administration’s ongoing rulemaking efforts regarding “connected vehicles” to cover industrial machinery, Internet of Things devices, appliances, and other connected devices produced by Chinese entities or including Chinese technologies that can be accessed, serviced, maintained, or updated remotely or through physical updates.
Congress enact legislation prohibiting granting seats on boards of directors and information rights to China-based investors in strategic technology sectors. Allowing foreign investors to hold seats and observer seats on the boards of U.S. technology start-ups provides them with sensitive strategic information, which could be leveraged to gain competitive advantages. Prohibiting this practice would protect intellectual property and ensure that U.S. technological advances are not compromised. It would also reduce the risk of corporate espionage, safeguarding America’s leadership in emerging technologies.
Congress establish that:
The U.S. government will unilaterally or with key interna- tional partners seek to vertically integrate in the develop- ment and commercialization of quantum technology.
Federal Government investments in quantum technology support every level of the technology development cycle and supply chain from basic research through product development and market deployment, including investments in intermediate services capacity.
The Office of Science and Technology Policy, in consultation with appropriate agencies and experts, develop a Quantum Technology Supply Chain Roadmap to ensure that the United States coordinates outbound investment, U.S. critical supply chain assessments, the activities of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), and federally supported research activities to ensure that the United States, along with key allies and partners, will lead in this critical technology and not advance Chinese capabilities and development....

Heather Cox Richardson 11.7.24
